Hey guys. First time DM for a group of 3 female friends, also first time players. Premade characters, cleric rogue and wizard.
So we are 2 sessions in and Im trying to implement the Matthew Perkins changes.
They kind of breezed through the goblin encounter, mainly because I forgot the goblins bonus action hide, which didnt make the 3 goblins very dangerous. They also carefully cleared the hideout, with 2 very nice sleep spells by the wizard on the Yeemik goblin room and also Klargs pet wolf.
Session 2 they came to Phandalin with level 2, met a few people and I tried to guide them towards the Redbrand hideout with the combined bartender and shopkeep "Bart". They considered a whole gang of criminals very dangerours from the start and asked how big the gang was. I said like 20 to 30 people, which makes them think they are all in the hideout, which they of course arent. (first problem)
They are then meeting Sister Garaele, who gives them the sidequest with the witch, and also the mayor who wants them to kill the Orcs.
Now one of the players does play a lot of RPGs and is like "The DM gives us these sidequests, so we can level and get some gold, since the criminals are probably too strong". So they are already discussing going after the orcs first, which makes me nervous.
Then they remember their appointment with Sildar, which they decide to do first after I told them the Orcs and Witch would be a few days travel and they just got here.
So they go to Sildar, after which I spring the Redbrand encounter on them, aiming to make it hard so the (unknown) Black Spider can intervene and help them (as per Matthew Perkins changes). The fight looks easy at first versus 4 goons, so I send a fifth one in and almost kill two players. (actually 1 would have died with a natural 1 on the second death save after failing the first, but they dont know that :) )
It works like a charm, 2 are down and the Spider comes in clutch with a potion for the cleric, which saves the other downed mage after. They let 1 goon escape, which should have repercussions I think.
We kind of end the session there with them being on edge after that close fight and they are talking how unexpectedly hard the Redbrands are after they breezed through the goblins (second problem).
So now they already thought the Redbrands are too big for them, then I told them there like 20-30 of them and they almost died "only" fighting 5 of them.
So im pretty sure they are too scared to tackle the hideout next session and will instead do the Orcs, which should be even harder I think.
I dont wanna just straight out tell them or railraod them, but at the same time I want them to do the hideout.
So Im considering different options:

1. Giving them level 3 (they asked at the end of the session), but I was planning that for after the hideout. (Im using milestone). That would make the Orcs doable but the hideout after harder.
   
2. Toning down the orcs. (meh)
   
3. Try really hard to make them go after the redbrands. Maybe they beat up Sister Garaele (which they like), or Sildar or Bart. Maybe steal Barts cat because they are looking for the party, who killed four of them (remember 1 escaped).
   

I dont wanna railroad them, which Im apparently not good at. The RPG player has said to the others multiple times "the Dm obviously wants us to do a or b". For example they were thinking of leaving the cragmaw hideout with Sildar without confronting Klarg.
I refreshed their memory of the scouted hideout and that only Klarg and his wolf remained, which made the player go, well he wants us to kill him so lets do that ^^

Sorry for the long text but I feel this needs a bit of context. So I have a 5 year old westie that I've been caring for since she was about 2.5 ish. She's the sweetest dog ever and I love her so much. She's never been formally trained but in general she is very loving, well behaved and doesn't cause me any trouble whatsoever. However, there is one exception, when we are out she will bark like a maniac at any dog that goes by, but that only happens when we are sitting down (like on a bench, or at a coffee shop). When we are walking she is very well behaved and friendly to other dogs 99%, of the time. When I first started taking care of her she used to bark to every dog when we walked as well, but over time this has faded a ton. When my parents had her as a puppy and until 2.5 they didn't let her socialize with almost any other dog on walks because they were afraid of her getting ticks/fleas or parasites. This concern does have some validity as I live in a country where most dog owners don't take proper care of their dogs and don't do prevention. Also in their defense she did get a protozoan parasite when she was a puppy that was a pain to get rid off and we have found a flea on her once even though she gets prevention for those. However, when I started taking here out I felt bad not letting her go near other dogs so I decided to take my chances. I began to let her go near leashed dogs as long as she wasn't barking and the other dog looked friendly and decently clean. Very slowly over time I noticed that she barked at less and less dogs and now we've reached a point where she almost never barks unless the other dog barks first or is showing signs of aggression, and obviously in this situation we just walk away. So the problem is partially resolved, except for when we're are sitting down, there she goes nuts for every single dog. I've been trying for ages to understand if this is based in fear, or excitement, or if she's being protective of me or another reason. Recently I've been thinking that probably it's excitement and a lot of frustration from not being able to go meet the other dog. See when we're walking, we pass the other dog and she knows I'll let her go meet them (most of the time). But when we're sitting, I don't have control over that because I'm not going to get up to go after the people with the dog. So it's up to the other people if they want to bring their dog over but usually they don't because they just going about their own business or she scares them way with her crazy barking and they think she'll be aggressive so they don't come close, which I feel frustrates her even more.
Please tell me what you think the reason for this behavior is and what could I do to help her out? I want her to be calm in these situations and also I'd like to take her out more often but this kinda limits what we can do together.
