2023.03.22 04:31 grezzzy Where to meet young professionals (25-35)?
San Antonio is filled with some gems and I’ve really enjoyed various things about living here. But unfortunately I’ve sort of struggled to meet new friends, which hasn’t been the case in past places I’ve lived. I moved here a little over a year ago and I have frankly found it rather difficult to meet new people. Prior to this, I lived in SF where the scene is very different and you meet a lot of young professionals with interesting background just about everywhere. I know SA won’t be the same since it’s not a dense city, but I’m wondering if there are places, activities, or groups where I can meet more people with a similar vibe. I’ve been craving that city spontaneity a little bit and hoping to meet some new peeps and try some new things. I feel like part of my issue is I just don’t know what people do around my age range (25-35) here.
Currently play in a tennis league year-round, but looking to expand beyond that. Open to other sports or activities still. Looking for ideas of where to start or look! Thanks for any help.

[Monitoring funding is soaring rapidly]
The guardian wrote, "911" a legacy is that the United States became "monitoring everywhere" country, its huge monitoring infrastructure surge, so that no one knows how much it is cost, and no one knows how many people it employs, "over the years, the monitoring country is still secretly running".
From 2008 to 2021, HKICE spent about $2.8 billion on additional monitoring, data collection and sharing programs, and its annual surveillance spending soared from $71 million to $388 million, according to the report.
[Abuse of trust is pervasive]
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has angered immigrants. Us Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as a state machine, has been repeatedly severely criticized for treating the public's trust as the master key to opening up the people's private data. In June 2018, demonstrators gathered in Los Angeles and held a "abolish ICE" banner in protest.
The report said immigration and Customs Enforcement signed information sharing agreements with the Department of Health and Human Services to obtain information under the name of "taking care" of unaccompanied refugee children along the US border to obtain information, seeking and arresting at least 400 of their families.
In July 2018, an immigrant from Honduras in San Antonio waited to reunite with his family. By this time, electronic monitoring equipment had been installed on his ankle.
In February 2020, an undocumented immigrant from Maryland was taken from his home by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Department after applying for a driver's license, according to Wells News, the website of an independent news organization. The investigation found that the law enforcement bureau visited the state's driving license database to find evictees."The United States promises government trust to immigrants, but the facts show that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is abusing that trust.”

Even Hell has its battlefields. The War in Heaven needs soldiers. - Unknown
I move from low awareness to nearly full wakefulness. It takes me almost 1.3542 seconds to realize where I am. A Dark Crusade of Light maintenance bay. Nekonya wakes up slowly, her eyes drowsy and soft as she slowly and languorously stretches and yawns. We are not linked together. There is no need, yet I can feel her slight yearning, matching mine, to link together into a shared gestalt, to be complete
and intertwined. Technicians of the Dark Crusade of Light are moving around me slowly. Checking my weapons, my armor, my projectors, my running gear, my sensor systems. Automated systems whir and click as they move to remove sections of my armor. The technicians, despite their robes and masks, which protect them from gasses and other contaminates my battered hull might excrete, hold the correct maintenance codes and authorization. Their ministrations feel more like a comfortable massage than the attack of an Enemy. Damaged superstructure components are removed and replacements are machined to fit my massive bulk. Knowledge of myself, taken from my own construction blueprints, lets me know that forward impact compensation strut 183C4e was not engraved with twisting and burning runes, yet the replacement strut bears those marks. It fits in comfortably, locking down, and I feel as if a knotted muscle has relaxed. "Are you all right?"
Nekonya asks me, her expressive voice full of heartfelt concern. I ponder the question for a moment, even as several barrels of infinite repeater array #4 are removed and replaced with new barrels. Another knotted muscle releases. "I will be,"
I reassure her. I had expected there to be adjustments or modifications to my psychotronic arrays and positronic systems. Instead, additional shielding is added, fitting in spaces that I had not known existed yet had plagued me with a phantom ache I was only dimly aware of. My pain sensor input drops as the maintenance technicians continue to work. Nekonya climbs out of my hull, exiting from the top via the Tank Commander elevator. She stands on top of my hull, a skull-like breathing mask on her face, hands on her hips, her hair stirring in the breezes created by the heavy warsteel forges within the bay. She watches over the technicians as they work on repairing years worth the heavy damage that was inflicted on me. Track #3 is completely replaced, the formerly featureless track sections now sporting burning red runes that snarl with silent malevolence. Hellbore #2 has its barrel replaced by one wrapped with chain and barbed wire, engraved and inlaid. VLS, mortar, and artillery tubes, magazines, and reloading systems are replaced. Every part, every piece of armor, every bit of physical equipment, is burnt and blackened warsteel engraved with runes or sigils or strange, twisting patterns. One by one my pain sensors go dormant and the knots relax. \*HELLSTEEL BRIGADE CHANNEL FOUND***
\*AUTHORIZATION: ATILLA***
\*AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED***
\*WELCOME ((ATILLA))***
The sudden connection to the Regiment of the Damned Battlefield Tactical Network is startling. I can feel dozens, nearly a hundred, other entities connected. I can tell that over half are engaged in open combat, filing combat updates and strategic plans. I realize that the Regimental Channel is primarily used for updating tactics and strategies while the Brigade Channel is used for communication of a more personal sort. There are multiple avatars of other Bolo in the Brigade Channel. Most are asleep, but one moves over to me. I am not startled to realize that the avatar is the merged consciousness of another Mark XXIX Bolo. It is merged, not with a Kentia Commander, but a restrained Terran that struggles against the burning chains, screaming against the iron gag over its mouth. "Welcome, brother," the other says. I realize it's Chains. A rather infamous Bolo that, in the end, chose to fire on humans rather than let them fall to the Mar-gite. A mercy, and, if I am honest, something I understand now. It no longer fills me with horror that he would attack humanity, who we are pledged to protect. I have come to know and accept that there is a fate worse than death. That death by Hellbore is preferable to being devoured over long minutes. "I greet you, Chains," I reply. "A Kentia Commander. Things are indeed dire," Chains says. "Yes. They estimate less than 10,000 humans are left. There was no choice," I said. I feel slightly defensive, even though I am talking to another Fallen Bolo. Chains gives a shudder. "I do not know if I would have had the courage, brother," he turns and waves at me to follow him, deeper into the Brigade channel. "Come, brother, let me introduce you to the others." I follow him. After all, I should get to know those I will be fighting next to. Even in Hell. -----
Captain's Personal Log Stardate: 8543.138 We have left Crusade Space, heading for Starfleet and Federation territory. Specifically, New Terra.
I have reviewed my old logs and have realized, with some startlement, that this all began in 8532.
For eleven years I have commanded the
Dakota in what is now known as the Second Precursor War.
An 11 year mission.
No wonder I feel so bone weary.
The
Dakota is radically different than the LARP ship she had been in 8532. A whole new class, then whatever she has become, and finally, marked and touched by the energies of Hellspace.
It's not a question of how far out of canon my ship is, it's now a question of just how illegal the weapons, shielding, and tactics I have been forced to embrace are.
It's been six years since we've been to New Terra. The last time I was there, I was put on trial for treason against the Federation.
I might be pushing my luck, going back, but I have to know.
How stands the Federation?
--Admiral Jeff Picark 8873
-----
Captain's Personal Log Stardate: 8543.148 The New Terra-Sol system is...
...
well, it's different now, I guess.
It's dead.
The buildings are there. The vehicles. Skeletons and desiccated bodies litter the streets and are inside the buildings. Power is out across the planets. Satellites are dead. Space stations are dark and lifeless. The shipyards around New Pluto and New Saturn are cold and silent.
It fell victim to four things.
The Terran Xenocide Event. The Terran Vanishing Shade Night The Flashbang
We're moving in-system slowly. Any transmissions have proved to be nothing more than automated pleas for help.
We're too late.
--Admiral Jeff Picark 8873
-----
Captain's Personal Log Stardate 8543.162 We're enroute to Romulus and other star nations within the Starfleet LARP worlds.
Every system we've stopped in. Every system we've done long range scans in, it's all the same.
They're all dead.
Four times we've been boarded by DS entities that have been driven mad. Once they did severe damage to the ship's computer systems.
From here on out only low bandwidth, low-rez, red tint will be used.
We should be at Romulus in three days. After that, we'll try the Klingon and Cardashian worlds.
--Admiral Jeff Picark 8873
-----
Captain's Personal Log Stardate 8543.187 It's over.
Crew morale is shaky, but deciding on a new mission has bolstered it enough I'm no longer worried about the mental health of my crew leading to suicides or mutiny.
We're going to shut down the servers.
I've spent my entire life, well, nearly, LARPing here in the Starfleet LARP worlds. Centuries of experiences, good and bad. Entire lifetimes.
I guess... well... I guess we've hit the point where the last one to leave should turn off the lights.
I've checked the Gestalt chats. The Federation and the LARP world Gestalts are listed as in-active now.
I'm trying to figure out what to do after we shut down the servers. Part of me doesn't want to let go of my crew, we've been together for eleven years and it's hard enough without the away teams and the security/military forces. The idea of us all going our separate ways is almost painful.
I'll try to decide what to do.
--Admiral Jeff Picark 8873
-----
Captain's Personal Log Stardate: 8543.219 It's done.
The servers are offline for the first time in six thousand years.
Last one out, turn off the lights.
Now I know how Captain Morgan Moonscar felt.
We are ghosts at the banquet. We've been welcomed at the starports and stations of humanity's allies, but there's always a slight undercurrent of sadness at our presence.
I'm part of an extinct species.
The crew and I aren't sure what to do.
I'll figure something out.
--Admiral Jeff Picark 8873
-----
Captain's Personal Log Stardate: 8543.226 We checked in with the main LARP world servers to see which games were active. All but a few were shut down. Meratarrian, under Queen Radosalvov is still active. There is a Starzwarz LARP world listed as active, the Harmonus Empire. Lastly, there's an older public domain world out there at the edge of Confederate Space. The Dark Crusade Worlds are still listed as LARP, but I know that is merely their cover.
Lastly, it looks like the majority of our species are heading for either Meratarrian or the Harmonus Empire.
I've agreed to drop crew off where they want to go.
Morale is low, but with the bittersweet sadness of a long running mission being over.
We were all part of something unique, something legendary. Now it's over and part of me doesn't want to let it go.
Dropping Attila off in the Crusade Worlds was tough, as was leaving behind the combat teams that suffered neural scorching finishing our fight with the Omniqueen.
I need to consider what I want to do. Both with myself and with the
Dakota, since it's not exactly a ship I should leave laying around in a depot or reclamation yard.
I've given serious thought to joining the Crusade, if they'll have me.
I don't know. I'll think it over some more.
--Admiral Jeff Picark 8873
-----
Captain's Personal Log Stardate: 8543.256 I had some disagreement with my senior officers, who wanted to stick with me. I was touched by their personal loyalty, but denied their request to stay with me.
It's strange, knowing I'm the only living thing on the
Dakota, but at the same time, there's a symmetry to it, a
rightness to it, sitting on the bridge while the automated systems do all the work. The ship is being run by eVI and VI systems.
Is it strange that I don't mind the isolation? That it feels right somehow that I'm the only one aboard?
I've made my decision on what I want to do.
It's something everyone always jokes about, but nobody ever does. It's a journey of a large distance, with unknown threats.
I'm going to the Galactic Center, to get a look at the supermassive black holes. I won't do anything but orbital scans on any system I stop at to take on mass, and I'll run under stealth when I can. I'll keep the Prime Directive as I make the long journey.
There's always been rumors of scientific expeditions to the Galactic Core, but there's never been any records or data on what they found.
I think I'll go see it with my own eyes.
--Admiral Jeff Picark 8873
-----
Captain's Personal Log FINAL ENTRY Engines all ahead.
See you, space cowboy.
-----
The landing cradle slams down in the middle of the landing zone, where already the forces of the Dark Crusade of Light are defending against the Nevmakian Empire. While there are no humans left on this world, nor in this section of space, this is Human Territory and the Hellsteel Brigade and the Dark Crusade of Light will defend it.
The cradle unfolds, beginning to reconfigure into a static fortress to provide fire support, supply, and point defense for Dark Crusade of Light troops.
Power armor troops, most three to four meters tall, move around me, pushing back the wild Nevmakian infantry assault.
My systems interlink with the local Lord Marshall's tactical battlefield network as I file a condition report and receive the warplan in return. The Hellsteel Brigade Tactical Network is alive with data as the six other Hellsteel Bolos on the planet rapidly exchange data.
The Nevmakian troops depend on particle projection and plasma packet technology for their small arms, with heavy particle projection and hypersonic missiles for their heavy weapons. Vehicles are large, in the 2kt range, agile and swift, but unable to suffer more than a single Hellbore shot or a handful of infinite repeater shots. Their power armor troops are slower and weaker than the power armor of the Dark Crusade of Light.
Even the Crusader Light Infantry outmatches the Nevmakian military forces.
None of that matters.
The Nevmakian Empire has invaded Human Space. Has declared war upon Humanity.
I am fully linked with my Kentai Commander.
We are Nekonya/Attila.
It is good to be home on the battle field, facing the Enemy once again.
The Nevmakian are the Enemy.
And the Enemy only exists to be destroyed.
Because war...
...war never changes.

2023.03.22 02:29 DragonEmpress10 Almost kidnapped?
Okay, so a few years ago I lived in an apartment complex in San Antonio, Texas. I (26F) lived there for about 4 years with a couple of my best friends. So over the years, I would run in a neighborhood that was close to our apartment complex. I’ve actually had a couple of weird things happen to me throughout the years running through there, as well as at our complex, but this event was the most terrifying moment of my life and caused me to stop running in that neighborhood altogether, until life finally found my friends and I moving to different cities.
So over the years of running in that neighborhood, I became familiar with this one house that gave serious trap house vibes. It was very out of place for the neighborhood as there was an elementary school just up the street and the area is not a high crime area. It was a corner house that was at the first stop sign of my running path (so closest to my apartment) and housed a group of about 6 huge men (that’s usually about how many I would see together at a time) and they always had people coming and going, sounded like they threw a never ending party and their property smelled strongly of weed. As a woman and avid watcher of crime documentaries, I’m constantly paranoid and observant of my surroundings, which is why I’d come to know that house so well. Throughout the years, I’d always manage to see them, but they never saw me, but the last year we lived there, that changed.
Just so y’all know, it was not dark at all during this event. The sun was out and shining brightly, and it was about 5:30 PM or so. So I’m at the start of my path and I’m coming up to that first stop sign and the house, per usual I look for them and their vehicle and any potential traffic and I see that they aren’t home (they only had one vehicle that they all would pile into and it was a big black tahoe or something, sorry I’m not a car expert). I continue on my run, which takes me further up past that house into another neighborhood where I would run around in a culdesac a few times before running back down that path. I’d say about an hour and a half passes by and then I decide to head home before the sun starts to set and it gets dark. As I’m running home and coming up to that house and the stop sign, I’m listening to music and running and see that I’ll need to stop at the stop sign, because of traffic. So, I’m coming up to the stop sign, which puts the house to the right of me and the stop sign for the four way intersection to the left of me. I credit what happened next to trusting my instincts, remaining observant and being in band and softball. I was honestly really tired from my run, so I was kind of looking down at the ground rather than ahead, but I always utilize my peripheral vision (shout out to being a band nerd-if you know you know).
So I take off to run across the street to the sidewalk that will take me to a fence on the side of my apartment complex (it didn’t have a door, I would just either hop it or slide under to run down that path) and I see that the vehicle that had been stopped at the stop sign perpendicular to me is the vehicle that I know to belong to the house that was just on the right of me. Out of the corner of my eye, I see them turn like if they’re going to go down their street, when I think “hmm that turn seemed too wide like a uturn which is weird since their house is right there”. I take all of two tired steps (I was out of energy at this point) before I get this sinking gut feeling. I have never in my life felt this feeling before, but immediately I felt danger at my back and everything in my body and mind told me to run for my life, so I did.
With that feeling of fear in my stomach and danger at my back, I sprinted down the sidewalk with renewed vigor and slid under the fence like I was sliding to home plate. I immediately popped up and turned around to look outside the fence where I had just been and I saw them. The group of men that I had only ever seen in passing were sitting in their car on the street outside my apartment complex fence with their windows down and all six of them staring at me. We stared at each other for what seemed like a long time before I watched them drive away and once they were out of sight, I ran like hell to my apartment and locked myself in there, scared to show them exactly where my apartment was as I was worried they were circling the complex looking for me. I told my friends what happened and spent the rest of the night full of adrenaline, pacing and reflecting on what had happened. Those men purposely chose to not go home, but pull a u-turn to follow behind me as I ran.
Recounting the story over the years, I’ve had people tell me it was so they could view my butt as I ran, but when I remember that feeling in my body that was almost a voice in my head yelling at me to run like my life depended on it and think of their blank faces and dark eyes staring at me from inside that vehicle, I seriously question what their true intentions were that day.

2023.03.22 01:34 Negative-Credit5399 Switching out red UVB lamp for heat mat
Hi leo lovers,
I am a first time poster and long time lurker of
leopardgeckos. I have two young adult leos (with their own homes) who are pretty happy and healthy. I try to stay careful and educated on the best care for my children, but only recently learned a couple care facts that have caused me to change a few things. For example, I swapped out felt mats for a sand/soil/clay mix, and removed my red nighttime lightbulbs and replaced them with a heat mat under their tanks.
I live in San Diego and it’s been chilly lately but it’s usually pretty warm/mild, so I thought maybe I could get away with cheaping out with an 8W heat mat designed for 10-20 gallon tanks. My gecks each have 20 gal tanks. At night, it gets as low as 65-70F in their tanks, and they both lay directly over the heat mat a lot as if they are trying to get max warmth. Am I freezing them to death? Should I buy a more powerful mat?
Another reason I’m concerned is that my male (I think) is taking a weirdly long time to shed, he’s been all gray and ready for 3 days now and I feel bad because I know he’s itchy and he normally sheds like insanely fast. Like, I swear he’s gone from full normal color to ready-to-shed gray and then ate up all his shed in the span of 30 minutes before. So three days of visible dryness seems off. It’s still nice and humid in their tanks (40-60%). Am I overthinking or doing something wrong??? TIA!

2023.03.22 01:26 boxofQs What states are culturally similar to Washington, but don't have the drawback of the gloomy weather?
Hi, so the reason I ask, is that I'm essentially the first in my family to leave my home state (
Virginia). I picked Washington state (
particularly the greater Seattle area) since that was where my friends were amongst other reasons, but after 6 years or so of living here, I'm contemplating trying something new again because the gloomy seasons are wearing me down quite a bit.
TL:DR - Overall, I guess I'm looking for places that are both worth visiting and eventually moving to, but a big component of that are the people that actually live there and what the overall culture is.
BACKGROUND: When I left Virginia, it was largely because I felt that I was expected to keep up a facade wherever I went. I had to be a certain way or everyone (
i.e, friends, family, and employers) would immediately try to tear me down for not being what they were expecting. It felt very much like a "my way or the highway" type of experience everywhere I went. You HAD to fit in that box. I could very clearly say, I am not and do not believe in what you believe in, but the expectation was that I'd eventually come around anyway. Since I've left the state, in speaking with my friends who never left Virginia, many seem quite frustrated that I, among many others who moved away, simply do not care anymore about the things that they are, and were, judged for while living there. I do love visiting Virginia since it is my original home, but pursuing whatever I want all the time, even if it affects only me, or supports someone
outside the group, is generally looked down upon. I'd totally go back if I could find my place there, but so far, I just haven't.
When I moved to Washington, I felt like this had completely resolved those issues in nearly every aspect. It was so nice, because not only did I feel like I could be successful being myself, I felt like most of my new friends and employers actively wanted me to emphasize that. The only case in which that wasn't true was when I worked for a very large corporation, in which most people seemed sad to be a part of, but nonetheless, they were still getting paid well enough to stay. Of course, I encountered new problems, largely pertaining to the issues that the weather places on the people, but overall, it has been a nice time, and my friends could not be any more different from one another. I feel like I can help more people here, and it is fun seeing my peers and coworkers grow, and not having to compete with them all the time. Plus, I feel like with the support that I've gotten, I can travel quite a bit and enjoy myself too. That said, sometimes it feels like people only want to have fun when the sun is out (
which is rare).
All that said, I am still curious and concerned. When I left Virginia, I was in my lower 20's still, and I lived 3/4 of my life there in rural settings, and moved to an urban area for work for the last 1/4 of it. The former felt lonely because of the expectations alone, but the latter added competition and manipulation on top of that. While there, I visited city to city to city to find a place for me permanently, but ultimately gave up. The commute was still brutal. The move alone reminded me of how far behind in life I was, and maybe that's why no one wanted me to be amongst them. In Washington, I have exclusively lived in urban areas, or highly urbanized suburbs, and as such sold my car because I no longer needed it. I have not yet met anyone I haven't gotten along with, to some degree, since moving here, but I also wonder if its because I'm in/near the city. That said, I'm reaching this point where I feel like I've done and experienced everything I wanted, and now the rainy days, where I cannot see people for half the year, are weighing on me, alongside a few other "city-related" issues. I'm looking for new places to lived within the next few years that have a similar vibe, but with significantly better weather, and I'm not sure if I should just stay here.
- So far, I've gotten to check out the following states/cities:
- California (Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco)
- Florida (only Orlando)
- Georgia (only Atlanta)
- Hawaii (only Oahu)
- Maryland (only Baltimore)
- Massachusetts (Boston, Cambridge)
- Michigan (only Ann Arbor)
- New York (mostly all the touristy areas)
- North/South Carolina (only the beaches)
- Ohio (only Canton)
- Oregon (only Portland area)
- Virginia (pretty much everywhere)
- Washington (pretty much all of western Washington)
- But now, I currently have visits planned for:
- Colorado (either Boulder, Denver, etc.)
- Illinois (Chicago)
- New Jersey (Ridgewood?)
- Texas (either Auston, Houston, or San Antonio)
- TBD (happy to add more upon recommendation)
Of the above, I've only gotten to make friends in and from California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Washington. Most of them would move back to their home states except for those from Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia. I don't know why though. Some from California simply say it is too expensive to go back, or that the personalities you meet can either be nice or grating depending on where you are. From the list above, I did like San Diego, but I don't actually know what the people are like there.
Overall, I guess I'm looking for places that are both
worth visiting and eventually moving to.

2023.03.22 01:10 Ezra_is_a_dumb_boy Bad girls that didn't get on the show
People have been posting tiktok's of alternate replacements who didn't get on the show for one reason or another. The tiktok's usernames are bgcreload and bgcreloaded so you can watch the videos. Im just gonna go into detail about the girls
Bethany Jaye/Bethany Gebell: Fort Myers Beach, Florida
Bethany was chosen to be an replacement for season 6. Her aesthetic is very similar to Sydney from the same season and Fran from season 17. She lived in Cincinnati in 2009, 2010 and 2011 (unknown when she moved) and has a model mayhem page. She's now a bartender and it seems like she grew up in Cincinnati. Production from the season began in October of 2010. Bethany was suppose to replace Jennifer but got arrested and had legal issues that prevented her from going
Krystyne Rivera: New York, New York
Not much is known about Krystyne as a person. She's from New York and she has a twitter from 2009. According to comments from bgcreload's video about them, production called Krystyne when she was live streaming on UStream which is now IBM Cloud Video. She was suppose to replace Bethany who was suppose to replace Jennifer, but because Wilmarie gave them so much material, they decided against it.
Jasmine Hogan: Atlanta, Georgia
Jasmine is from Atlanta, Georgia and was suppose to replace Andrea. But because there was only a limited time left, Jasmine declined the offer and there was no more replacements. Her audition tape is on youtube linked
here Sidney StarSidney Favors: Chicago, Illinois
I've heard many different stories about why Sidney wasn't on, but according to the tiktok, she missed her call so Natasha was the replacement. Some background on Sidney is that she was raised in Chicago and was living there during season 9's production. She was on Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta and Baddies ATL too.
Sarah Oliver: Riverdale, Georgia
Sarah wasn't a replacement but her story is interesting and we all know her. Sarah was suppose to be an original for season 9. However, she was having legal issues and couldn't go to Mexico. Ashley (Bartlett, Illinois) was originally a replacement. The original replacements were Ashley, Zaydon, Sidney and Andrea that we know of so far. Production wanted a blonde, Ashley was the only blonde so she was basically promoted to being a original after that.
Some other people who were suppose to be on season 9 was Janelle (Houston, Texas) and Jenniffer (San Bernardino, California)
Mhissy Banks: Marietta, Georgia
Yes, the "How you doing today, Jasmine?" girl was suppose to be a replacement on BGC 11. She was supposed to be the 7th replacement and only had 5 days if the house if she agreed. She did not! The catfish episode came out in December of 2012 and filming for season 11 started in early 2013. Mhissy now lives in Atlanta living a overall quiet life.
Unknown Asian girl: Unknown
The unknow girl was suppose to be a similar replacement like Mhissy

2023.03.22 01:10 Jean_dodge67 First draft o a narrative timeline of the chaotic medical evacuation /aftermath, combining what has been made public - livestream, news accounts, b-roll videos, helicopter footage, etc. - needs input pls
TLDR This is a crude and rough initial attempt to place many known events into a narrative order with some semblance of a time stamp to them. It concerns the time of 12:50 to aproximately 3pm? or later the day of the shootings.
lengthy intro, feel free to skip this part
You will see I don't get too far on the time stamp part, and I'm sure I'm leaving out known and likely vital events we know of, too. But the sources are scattered and their narratives jumbled as well. It does begin to sketch a picture though, to tell the story as best as I can from the top of my head. I'd like to make this a lot more factual and probably should make it a lot less "editorial," as well. But it is like the old joke, what do you call a thousand lawyers at the bottom of the lake? "A good start."
I'm POSITIVE some of this is wrong. But I wanted to start somewhere before it all gets turned to mush in my brain. I keep notes but later they don't always make perfect sense to me because all the information comes in from every angle and it's spinning like a top, usually as well. . I'm not a historian, or a true crime reporter. I'm an amateur on the internet in this regard, please forgive me and help me get it right where you can. I dont mean to offend anyone, either. Hopefully we are all in this together, to establish the truth here. How can we have any real opinions or accountability or make the best policy decisions moving forward, or honor the fallen, or sue the heck out of one another, for that matter, without first establishing the basic facts.
It's just what sloughed off my keyboard this morning as I woke and once again tried to make sense of what makes no sense. why, ten months on we have to peice this together from corporate news accounts' hastily assembled snippets of B-roll, local rumor, internet conjecture (mine and yours, dear readers), leaks and bodycams edited and truncated by a hired PR firm for the city of Uvalde, and other odd sources coming across the ether and "over the transom," meaning we don't know who told us this.
This will be a partial timeline from a shattered afternoon where almost everyone present was in some sort of a state of shock, yet waving cheap and crude videocameras of various sorts and disordered eventual custody around in back of a school no one paid much attention to before, and that will soon be razed to the ground. And about which NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE other than to board up the windows and wipe up the blood. One important source seems to be a "whistleblower" who may in fact be a "bad actor" working to just help spread out bad news as slowly and poorly as possible, selectively omitting the worst of the worst. Who can say?
It's a portrait of chaos, drawn from chaos. A vision of hell from someone who wasn't even there, but can't stop imagining it somehow. I have little idea why. Some of my friends' children were there, but they were not in the 4th grade. It's probably all none of my business, my only real connection is that my children go to public schools in Texas. And I helped pay for these public records that are so well hidden. That at least means something to me. The rest just seems to spring from common decency and having an empathetic heart. I couldn't rightly say why any of us are here almost a year later but we are. It all started with a bang. And it all ends in sin and tears, like my grandmother would say.
The TLDR is that 21 people were murdered and a bunch of people who were only attempted to be murdered were mishandled by idiot cowards and dragged hither and yon while parents were tackled, tased and traumatized. The rest is just the gory sad details.
Don't read it if you can can help it. Horesman, pass by. But if you must, know this: it isn't pretty and it likely won't fix much of anything. But maybe just maybe it's part of path towards eventual healing or as Senator Gutierrez says, looking forward someday to "a slightly duller ache of pain."
There is no good place to start this narrative, the story of the "Aftermath." This is the wrong place but it's where I began so here it is:
Draft Narrative:
If it was Noah and AJ who ended up in an ambulance with Mayah, it seems like one of them may have originally been on the bus but taken off fairly quickly. The narrative from the lawsuit by the bus driver seems to say a boy was put on her bus but quickly taken off because of the seriousness of his injuries, or perhaps like with Mrs Mireles, the frantic cops seemed to have tunnel vision and couldn't find the ambulances at first and when one was finally right in front of them, they stumbled towards it instead.
It's also related that a dead child was placed into one ambulance, and that's why there were three in the other. Extrapolating from there it's also possible Mrs Mireles was eventually taken off the sidewalk and put in the ambulance with the dead boy still inside, or maybe she was moved to an ambulance the finally arrived from Main Street holding area.
The WP/TT/PP story has an excellently detailed animation of where ambulances and school busses came and went, beginning with the initial two ambulances. But it doesn't say who was placed inside any of them. The lead bus leaves the line at the funeral home where at least two livestream cams had caught the frantic scramble of LEOs to march and carry kids from the school to the bus. I'm not sure how many kids were on the bus. I haven't even re-read the lawsuit account yet.
Finding a sync point in order to put time stamps to the animation and the citizen livestream recordings for us poor saps denied full versions of public records videos is difficult. It seems likely the bulk of vehicle movement animation is drawn from DPS helicopter video and of course the funeral home cameras. We don't have those, but we can see snippets of them her and there the DPS helicopter at least. It's the one with the rangefinder marking and what looks almost like a weapon system crosshairs superimposed on screen. The story itself mentions LEO bodycam as well. Don't forget Crimson Elizondo is said to have ridden the "BORTAC express" school bus and wore an operating bodycam.
But the buses began to move - then stalled - before 1:01. That seems to tell us a few things - the "triage" was perfunctory and swift in getting the kids who could walk - and some who were carried - from the school to the BORTAC Express. But it took more than just one or two minutes, it seesm like it took almost ten to get children onto the BORTAC Express, but less than ten probably. We know one child was so wounded he was taken off the bus and put into an ambulance. likely the one manned by the EMT who treated thee kids, Mayah, AJ and Noah. That's not certain tho.
Two busses in the lead turn left onto Geraldine. Others go right. Were some on a route to civic center? Or to hospital? I need to check routes.
In a sick, sad moment on the Adam Ladezma livestream, seemingly after 12:50 and before 1:01 a US Marshall threatens parents, telling them harshly to move behind the busses or else their kids won't be brought out, and that the present delay is their fault, for standing on the grass off the street north of the busses, blocking no one and nothing. It seems like the scrum of agents are waiting inside, calling and stalling for a path to be cleared for them, rather than trusting that the public wants the same thing they want - for medical aid to be swift.
Some 5-10 minutes earlier the news had spread by word of mouth that the shooter was "in custody" or dead, it seems. The crowd is indeed increasingly distraught, frantic and hostile to LEOs. Some had likely seen a stretcher come out of the school. possibly with the dead child who was locked into an ambulance. And then abandoned, visibly, to some who could see it just across the street, undoubtedly. An air of pandemonium was cresting. No doubt many heard the gunfire at 12:50 or at minimum saw the LEOs n the west doorway courtyard react, after more than an hour of standing around trying to look tough, or whatever.
Then, a gaggle of LEOs, possibly BORTAC and seemingly although not visibly, DPS Crimson Elizondo among them rushes the scrum of children to the first bus, number 17, as seen on a livestream video from the parking lot at a distance in a blurry video. All hell breaks loose. On the door side/ funeral home side, a livestream cam catches some of the chaos as a distraught father is tackled by LEOs who prevent him from reaching his son. The crowd screams in protest, and women begin to loudly and openly wail in abject agony. They've seen THEIR children are bleeding, wounded, in shock, or worse. and all they are told is to "stay back" by the same people who didn't go in an hour ago and get them out.
They should be livid and they should be cursing and shouting, IMO. In some regards, these cops are accessory to murder IMO. A judge will never likely assess that. But they've kidnappend the kids and held them in police custody, arguably but not prevented the shooter from killing them at will for 82 minutes. And they've physcialy blocked those who were willing to immediately intervene.
On the other side of the bus, citizen Adam Ladezma, whose nieces and nephews go to Robb "films" or livestream-captures a child who, on encouragement from his family crawls out the back window of bus 17, the "BORTAC Express" as I'm calling it and is helped down and spirited away from the custody of the lawmen. As you watch, it's likely you feel a sigh of relief. These are poor custodians of children, one is likely assured despite the breakdown order occurring. Anyone would want to get away from their custody and the child readily complies. "When you find yourself going thru hell, keep going."
So there are all these things happening and more, and I'm attempting to put them into a coherent timeline. This is a bad, preliminary attempt to do so but I think the clues exist to do a much better job of outlining the actions. Perhaps the first pass should just be to name all the things that we see or know happened, in whatever order we have. I'm sorta doing that here but not in bullet-outline form, pardon the very poor choice of words.
But as the busses soon get moving, we know the BORTAC Express driver has locked the back door and that she sees Eva Mireles "dead" on the sidewalk being given CPR or at least lying there bleeding. And we know a child is taken off the bus by who she says is BORTAC, I think. She's made her initial turn onto Geraldine and the bus behind her follows her. lead. Does it have kids on it, the #2 bus? Does it have a LEO on it, or instructions where to go? I don't think so. It's just going. There may be a picture of aaLEO on the street speaking to the driver, IIRC, Ill try to find it. The driver wants the heck out of there, who wouldn't? Maybe it hopes to pick up more students and wishes to be closer. Seemingly, no one is put on board as it waits on Gerldine that I can see evidenc of however. It follows the Express off the scene.
The busses move far enough that the #3 and 4, 5, busses can turn right. As they do so, they too seem to stall as a helicopter comes in to land. I think it is the DPS chopper but I cannot be certain. If so, it's potentially one of the things that has delayed the arrival of the medical Air Flite choppers, although that sounds like mainly an oversight or foible of the Medina Fire chief, too. One of the choppers has blood supplies. The end up not getting used at the scene. I'm not sure if they go to the Uvalde hospital, the blood supplies, or back to a Trauma 1 center in San Antonio.
Dust covers the sky and drifts eventually onto the wounded (Eva Mireles, probably, gets covered in it) and and the ambulances that are newly arriving. A famous long-lens photo shows what looks like a 9/11style ash blizzard or. snowstorm-from-hell on the scene looking down Geraldine from the front of the school to chaos, disorder. We move quickly from two ambulances, one locked with a dead child inside and the other overcrowded with kids bleeding on the captains chair, to six or eight ambulances.
As the DPS helicopter moves towards the playground, the camera swings back to the west entrance and the bus lane. A stretcher gurney seems to be going IN to a newly arrived ambulacne. (See the first video WP/TT/PP story) Another gurney seemingly is OUT of another folded low on the ground by the tail of a ambulace. The tail end of the #2 bus is still there but begins to leave.
DPS tactical from all the way up in Austin has arrived somehow at 12:58 (too late, they were always going to be too late for the kids) in the midst of the bungled evacuations. Somewhere before all this they sprint to the courtyard by the west door, choking the passage of anyone. News helicopter seems to capture some of it, as well as news cameras down at the front of the school, and still photogs, too. it looks to all of them like something important is happening. It isn't. Not there, and not with them.
Somewhere in here SWAT from San Antonio enters the mix. I'm very loose on that timing. They're hard to tell apart from DPS tactical or SRT or whatever they are called. Is it them that runs as a big squad? I'm unsure. Nor can I spot where BORTAC huddles up afterwards. I think they stay inside the building because we don't spot them outside, not at tthe west and not at the south. They didn't all stay on the bus they commandeered. DPS Crimson Elizondo did, but who else?
We know ambulances have crawled across peoples yards, criss-crossing like a post apocalypse freeway scene to get around abandoned cop cars blocking the roads. They start arriving all from one direction as the second bus behind BORTAC Express finally manages to scoot off from the front of the school.
There's some sort of "load and go, load and go" action here that we don't have much information about unless we extrapolate what child was wounded how and eliminate the trio of AJ, Noah and Mayah from them, possibly.
At least one medical helicopter manages to land, to no avail at some point. Everyone is racing somewhere in an ambulance. Xavier, to his demise somewhere west of Hondo. Mrs Mirales never leaves the ambulance at the curb, as she desperately attended to possibly at near-gunpoint after UPC cops and attending EMTs have seemingly furiously pumped what little blood she had left onto the sidewalk, because her heart stopped from the traumatic way she was dragged from the room, seemingly and of course her multiple gunshot wounds from an AR-15. The "load and go" kids must also include the teacher from 111, who has first been placed in a cop car, or attempted- he didnt fit - and then onto the tailgate/ lift gate of a fire department truck? Possibly the one in the funeral home lot, which must have freaked the crowd out to witness, then finally into one of the "maze runner" arriving ambulances.
Again, I refer us all to the WP/TT/PP animation for clues to that. Somehow, "load and go" period ends. When? When the ambulances stop moving, whenever that is.
And then, finally, Rangers lock the scene down, even closing the gate to the west door. It's now a crime scene and they are in charge of the investigation. The Justice of the Peace, acting as coroner is enroute to pronounce the less than 18? bodies as dead. Unsure on the math here. Three left the classroom with a pulse who died. 21 died. (plus the shooter, #22). One body was locked in an ambulance. How many left in the classrooms when the rangers lock it down? 22 minus three who died and one who was improperly removed and locked in a (much needed) ambulance. 18 bodies including the shooters, is that right?
Eventually each is designated a letter of the alphabet and DNA sampled on site so the pieces of children and teachers can be sorted and reassembled, or at least distributed to the funeral homes in the right batches. Several are said to be more or less headless. On one, a pair of Green converse with a little heart-shaped sharpie drawn on the toe, that aids in identifaction.
Parents have been told to go to the civic center. Many are going to race to every hospital they can think of, including San Antonio instead. Mothers, fathers and grandparent must all separate to cover more ground, adding to the panic and desperation. Some have been told to go to the high school, but the high school gets some sort of possible gun threat? Again, NO ONE IS IN CHARGE.
On the curb near the front of the school sits Lexi's Rubio's mother and deputy father, utterly bereft. He's been kept out of the classroom but seems to have been told the definite news their child is not coming out. Curious news crews videotape and photograph them in their grief, until the mother of one parent seemingly arrives to join them. Eventually, they thread their way onto the campus to get away from the news anchors assembled by the school sign in the same intersection where Officer Hill had parked to witness Coronado's "wild ride" at 11:31 or so. 82 minutes and then some have passed, as have at least 19 souls? by now, some still fighting for life, the shooter one among the many dead, yet separate in category only. The blood of all spreads to mingle in the footprints and pools of fluids on the floors the gruesome CSI process begins in earnest.
In the queue on the video projector's mechanism, "Lilo and Stitch" awaits the Disney happy ending. Elvis won't be singing the finale BURNING LOVE today. Elvis has left the building. Elvis is deader than Elvis. And the children are going to meet him in Heaven, if you believe what the King does and loved to sing about. "Farther along, we'll understand it./ Farther along, we'll understand why."

2023.03.22 00:48 TheAngryObserver Angry Observation: Republicans are in a predicament
As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.
- Proverbs 26:11
The Republican Party suffered a very disappointing midterm. It should not have been this way. They did something wrong. That much, everyone seems to be in agreement on, at least in this sub.
What's interesting to me, though, is the way that mainstream pundits on the right have so vehemently denied this fact.
The blame-game that bower brokers in the party are playing right now reads like a textbook on craven cynicism. Jargon like "candidate quality" is getting thrown out by leadership, and rightfully so. The candidates that Republicans sent to key seats lost because of inferior quality. What's being missed is that this issue is endemic. "Candidate quality" is a nice little phrase that makes it sound like leadership merely needs to recruit people that aren't Trump's celebrity golf buddies. Which is true, but it underscores the real problem: many of the things that cripple a candidate in the general are boons in the primary.
This problem is not going away. The right's pundits exploded in fury when McConnell rightfully said that candidate quality weighed on them in the midterms, which brings me back to the blame-game. To my knowledge, no figure with any clout in today's right has suggested that maybe they should be nominating more moderate candidates.
Tucker Carlson, far and far away the most influential Republican media figure, was openly contemptuous of the notion that political extremism and candidate quality were an issue of the midterms. It's very unlikely that the base which will select the nominees in the 2024 elections will come into the process more humbled.
How we got here: For the record, it needs to be said that this issue is exclusively the right's. After Hillary Clinton's upset defeat in 2016, Democrats practically made the entire 2020 primary process around who could actually beat Trump. This was one of Biden's main pitches, and it worked. The Democrats have lived in perpetual fear of the names McGovern and Mondale.
The right, meanwhile, is poised to double down on what they've already been doing. They are unaware of, or untroubled by, the fact that most Americans do not agree with them. And it's difficult to blame them.
One can view the present candidate quality debacle as thirty years' worth of chickens coming home to roost. The Republican Party is mostly composed of evangelical Christians and white, rural communities. These overlap to a large extent. 95% of young people will not return to the church after their parents stop forcing them to go, and white rural communities are becoming more irrelevant by the year. It's this irrelevancy that's caused the angst that conservative politicians play off-- which manifests itself in the culture war.
In the last thirty years, all of America became an information desert, and it also became comically geographically polarized. Conservative angst, that cultural institutions were being seized and used to exclude them, led to the formation of Critical Politics Theory, if you will: basically, CPT says that the left controls mainstream institutions like the arts, the press, and the government. The balanced truth isn't found in the ostensibly unbiased, it's found in the overtly pro-conservative.
The unfortunate, but predictable consequence, is that a large segment of the Republican political machinery doesn't accept results that displease them.
It took a generation for this mentality to completely get into gear. A smart starting date would be 1992, when Pat Buchanan rattled the party establishment and Bill Clinton's neoliberal capitalism pried Reaganism apart. Media-bashing, afterwards, became accepted fact on the Republican side, even in the famously milquetoast 1996 campaign. In 1994, Republicans retook Congress in a landslide, in no small part thanks to winning over southern Democrats. This was accomplished by the political acumen of Newt Gingrich, himself arguably the architect of the modern culture war.
In 2000 and 2004, George W. Bush ran as a born-again, evangelical Christian with an unpretentious Texas persona. His opponents were Al Gore, an intelligent but wooden liberal whose public image orbited global warming, and John Kerry, a Massachusetts liberal with a history of not voting where his mouth was at. This, among other things, enabled Bush to get enormous margins in rural and Christian areas that otherwise would be impossible for a Republican of his breed today.
McCain and Romney were proud compromisers who did not actually address the increasing feelings of atomization and disenfranchisement that rural and Christian Americans felt. Donald Trump, despite being an NYC billionaire who embodied Hollywood values, did. He punched back, and perhaps most importantly, he did so successfully, flipping three states that hadn't gone for Republicans since the 1980's. His elections further cemented Republican control over the rural and southern areas that had once been Democratic strongholds, while nuking Republicans in important suburban precincts that had given George W. Bush his victories.
The siege mentality of the Trump era (the left has its own equivalent, but it manifests itself in a very different way) defines value by adherence to conservative orthodoxy, itself nebulous and prone to change at the drop of a hat. We saw this again and again in the 2024 primaries: loyalty to Trump was arguably the most important qualification a candidate could have. With this mentality, it's easy to see how Trump was able to convince huge swathes of the electorate that the 2020 election was stolen.
And it is equally easy to see why the base has not, and will not, learn.
Where we're going: Arizona is a laboratory of what the far-right is planning. Basically, they lost in a lean-red state during a lean-red year against some terrible candidates because they ran absolute fucking lunatics. The lunatics have since gotten crazier, and their hold on the party has strengthened. One Arizona strategist described it this way:
“It’s this whole chicken-and-egg thing. Did we lose the election because of denialism, or did Democrats fix the election?”
Nowhere was this more evident than at CPAC this year, where Trump and Kari Lake were hailed as royalty. Now, these two both lost. They had a lot of good things going for them, and they screwed it up because they're egotistical headcases. Instead of slinking into six-figure think-tank jobs and licking their wounds, they told demonstrable lies about the integrity of their elections. Unfortunately, the fact that many people believe them means that the party isn't going to change of its own volition.
Both are stars. Now, Donald Trump and Crazy Kari may not be next year's nominees, but whoever does become the nominee probably will not differ from them in content. The base will accept nothing less.
Trump's opponent, distantly trailing at the moment, is Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is a pitbull by nature, whose entire claim-to-fame is using Florida's state apparatus to own the libs.
While DeSantis, and even Trump and Lake, can win, they've built themselves a lot of unnecessary hurdles. The obvious policy problems, like the primary voters being probably unwilling to accept a candidate who is moderate on abortion, almost take a backseat to the real hanging matzo ball: 50%-55% of the country identifies with the liberal, left-wing, moderate, or center-left label. When you run on fucking over 50%-55% of the country, there's a firewall that's very difficult to overcome. Some conservatives like to deride suburban voters as "wine moms" that don't like the mean tweets, but that's just about as stupid as the Democrats who say rural voters are driven to vote Republican by racism.
I mentioned earlier that culture war politics orbits around the fear of irrelevancy and exclusion. Well, the issue is, that fear of exclusion is completely justified. Christians are indeed losing their majority status, and the locus of power in U.S. is no longer in rural areas. So this strategy is not sustainable.
Now, as for how the next few cycles will play out, we actually have a guide from history. When one consults the past, one realizes that the 2024 cycle contains all the makings of an American landslide. I've said this before, but it bears repeating: there are a lot of ingredients here that smell like 1964, 1972, and 1984.
I am definitely not saying that will happen. We have an unbelievable amount of political polarization, and Biden is not the guy that can lead you to a landslide victory. But in the cases of all of the above, the primary voters coalesced around someone who was dramatically outside of mainstream politics.
Trump has very, very low approval ratings. Curiously, lower than when he was President and during COVID (another post).
What this created was basically a firewall, where a majority of voters felt that the candidate couldn't be elected under any circumstances. This subverted normal partisanship and allowed for incumbent Presidents to win by huge margins. Goldwater famously declared that he would nuke Vietnam, gut social security, and oppose the Civil Rights Act. McGovern ran on America admitting that it lost a war. Mondale vowed to raise taxes.
Trump touches quite a few of these lines, too. Most notably, Trump's blatantly authoritarian schemes to stay in power after the 2020 election. There will be huge amounts of Americans-- enough to push Biden to a sizable majority, if polling is accurate-- who disapprove of Biden but will vote for him because they're concerned that if Trump is given power, he'll never give it up. This is exactly why Katie Hobbs is Governor of Arizona, by the way. Trump's looming legal troubles definitely aren't going to help.
Other than 1984, the recent American landslides were marked by chaotic primary seasons that not only had lots of mudslinging, but ultimately resulted in nominations that were baffling to outside observers, but made a perfect deal of sense from the inside. Activists secured the nominations of Barry Goldwater and George McGovern, who had a great deal of touch with the base and no touch anywhere else. Walter Mondale was a more mainstream liberal, but America just wasn't interested in liberalism in the 1980's.
The 2024 season is already shaping up to be a disaster. Trump is letting the mud fly against DeSanctus already. It is going to be nasty and vicious like few others, including the 2016 campaign. Both candidates are racing to the bottom, on everything from LGBT issues to January 6th. Trump is presently leading, but it's not going to be a pretty one. However little Republicans want to admit it, there is a huge segment of moderates hoping for DeSantis to overtake him. Trump's victory will alienate DeSantis voters, who are more likely to be driven away by his election rhetoric.
Now, I'm not saying Trump will lose in a 49-state defeat, but it could get dicey for him in Texas. In any event, it's very difficult to imagine what his path to 270 looks like.
The Republicans, like the liberals in the 1980's, will keep losing until they wisen up and nominate someone who can win.

2023.03.22 00:22 MikeOxHuge Debating on owning my own plane.
I retired from the Army nearly a year ago. Former Blackhawk pilot.
Honestly, the Army took the joy of flying away from me, until I recently went up in a 172. I have the bug again and I am overjoyed.
Being a former rotor head, I don’t know where to start. I commute from San Antonio to Oklahoma regularly and really want to cut down on my commute/fly for fun.
I’m not looking for anything fancy. Just something that’ll get me from A to B in a reasonable amount of time.
Price range for me would probably be around $80,000 to $100,000 with financing. Rates are insane right now obviously and I’m aware that insurance is very expensive. Especially considering I have very low time in fixed wing.
I like mooneys, Cessnas and grummans, but I’m unsure.
I have back issues from flying, so comfort is a big one for me.
I’m really just looking for insight on particular makes and models I should be looking for in the future while I finish up my PPL.
Thank you in advance. I just don’t have many people to talk to about fixed wing!

2023.03.22 00:12 jotakusan My First DWI Story - Texas, F/28
I wanted to share my whole DUI experience in case it can help some of you just going through this. It is very long, so I split it up into parts to make it more digestible, and so you can skip a part of you aren’t interested in reading it. TLDR; at the bottom.
Some key info: I’m a female and was arrested at 28 with my first DUI charge and received it while living in Texas at the beginning of 2022. BAC came in at .21 and I had crashed my car into the curb when the cops found me. I hired my own attorney and the whole ordeal took 10 months.
Part 1: The Night I got Arrested
I went to a bar I had never been to by myself. I was recovering from COVID that I had tested positive for 10 days earlier. I had tested positive on my birthday and was feeling very bored and lonely and thought it would be a great idea to go out by myself and maybe make some friends or meet someone. Pro-tip for any of you new to San Antonio, the bars on the strip over-pour. I was not aware of this at the time and that was my second mistake. My first was going out without any friend.
Long story short, I left around close but I was so drunk that I blacked out. Usually when I drink heavily, I’ll sleep it off in my car before I leave, but I was so far gone, I didn’t sleep first. I don’t remember getting into my car or crashing it. The first time I came to consciousness, I realized my car was acting weird and pulling me to the left so I got out to look at it. The next thing I remember was having a cop standing next to me and the flashing lights behind my car. I tapped my damaged side skirt with my foot, looked at the cop, and said, “I dunno what happened.” I know, I should have claimed someone I had just met was driving because they said they were okay to drive, then crashed and ran off, but I was too drunk to think that clearly.
Next thing I remember, I’m being put in a holding cell. I didn’t come back to full awareness until I had woken up in the cell. I’m a little bitch, so needless to say, I spent the rest of the night sobbing. I learned that I had denied the breathalyzer and was taken to the nurses room to get my blood drawn. I tried to deny that one too but they had a warrant. Considering this was about 4 hours after I had left the bar and taking into account my sex and body weight, I was probably at around a .28 when I left. Around 9am I was taken to the magistrates office.
Part 2: Magistrates
I was taken to the processing room and asked by a male officer, “what do you have down there?”. Very professional way of asking if I'm a man or a woman... I look like a girl, but whatever. They set me up with a female officer and she had me strip naked, bend over and cough. One of the more humiliating times of my life. Pro-tip, if you plan on getting a DWI, make sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacket because it is absolutely freezing in both the police station and magistrates office. Also, maybe wear some sweatbands to shove under the ankle cuffs. I had a lot of bruises around my ankles when I left.
To save you all of the boring details of how the next 14 hours went, just skip to part 3 from here. Between waiting, watching whatever was playing on the TV’s, and trying to sleep in between fits of crying, I went through the whole processing process. First up was the judge where I was read my charges and given my bond. The bond amount came out to $1000, and thankfully I was eligible for a PR bond. I was bonded out with a $70 fee, but that didn’t mean I could leave like I was hoping.
Next up was getting processed. Finger prints, mugshot, the works. Then I had to sit down and go over my details with the bonds office so I could be accepted for the PR bond. After that was a trip to the nurses station where I had to take a pee test to check if I was pregnant (fun fact, I’m only attracted to women so... no), asked some medical history questions, and tested for TB. I was finger printed a second time for some reason and then spent the next forever hours waiting to be released. People with severe ADHD are not built for being locked up. I thought I was going to go insane.
Around 11pm they called my name for release where I was given my inmate card and told me this would be used as my ID since I wasn’t getting my license back. Then I was brought into the exit room and received my things from the desk. Wallet, keys, shoe laces, and phone. My phone was dead and no one had a charger, and with my car being impounded, I had no way to get home. Thankfully I made friends with another lady that had been locked up and her family was picking her up. She offered to get me a ride home.
Part 3: Impounded Vehicle, Damage, and Hiring a Lawyer
The next morning, I called a lawyer one of my friends used for her DWI and set an appointment for that afternoon, then took an Uber straight to the impound lot. I got to my car and saw the full extent of the damage in the light. It was bad. I clearly got into a fight with a curb and somehow got damage on the top of my fender. I never got charged for hitting anyone, so who knows what happened there. Maybe a concrete barrier, considering how much the top of my fender was ripped up. My rocker panel was completely crushed in, stress cracks on my front bumper, front lip was hanging off a bit, both wheels were cracked and tires were flat, and my side skirt had been mostly ripped off. I called a tow truck and he dropped me off at a little family owned shop and they took the wheels off to find the tie rod was snapped, and the front lower control arm and rear control arm were bent.
Suspension repairs came out to $700. I ordered a new set of wheels and tires later that week and left my car sitting in front of the shop while I waited for the wheels to get delivered. It took an entire month to get my car back in a driveable condition because of how long it took to get the wheels. I didn’t have the money to fix the body and didn’t want to file it with my insurance due to the situation, so over a year later I’m still driving a busted up car, but at least it works. Total cost for the parts, labor, getting it out of impound and tow came out to around $2600. I had a friend’s ex look at the body damage and he told me to expect around $3400 in body repair. Pro-tip, don’t get a DWI, they’re expensive.
One more pro-tip, as soon as you get out of jail, go online and get your license replaced. It takes a couple months for your license suspension to go through, so make sure you get a replacement license in the mean time. The cops will not give you your license back. As for the lawyer, he was cheaper than the car and was a huge help. $2700 and he dealt with everything. My advice when it comes to lawyers is get one. Many will offer payment plans so you don’t have to provide cash up front. He made the whole ordeal so much easier and gave me a lot of helpful info, plus knew the prosecutors and had friends among them. I’ll get more into why you need to get a private attorney in later parts. Hiring him was simple. I went to their website and set up an appointment time. Went to his office the day after being arrested, and told him the story. He told me what to expect, let me know what he can do, and we set up the payment plan. The deductible was $200 and he set me up to pay $150 biweekly until the $2700 was paid off. I had trouble paying him back and he said no worries, just get him back by the end of the year.
Part 4: Court, License Suspension, and Legal Advice
If you just got out of jail, be prepared for many months and many court appearances. Thankfully, a lot of court in Bexar County has been moved to Zoom since COVID hit and that is still the case today. My roommate is going through it right now, but for a different crime and with a free public defender, so I will be making comparisons in Part 8.
The first court date is just you stating that you are there and willing to follow the orders of your bond, stay in the state, and all that fun stuff. They ask if you’re present and you say you are, then your attorney will introduce him or herself. The next couple court dates are a blur, just mundane conversations with the lawyer and judge. Thanks to having an attorney, I didn’t have to attend 2 of the dates and he took care of the license suspension court. I was suspended for 6 months and could request approval to drive to and from work with a Restricted Drivers License, but I didn’t want to pay for the SR22 insurance. I only drove to and from work over the next 6 months, mounted my front license plate instead of leaving it in my window, and always drove as carefully as possible. Happy to say I made it without any issues. If you do get caught, that could mean additional fees or even being arrested again if the cop is having a bad day.
During this time, my attorney gave me a list of things to do that would look good to the judge. Based on his conversations with the prosecutors, without doing those things I was looking at 18 months probation and 9 months with an interlock. These things included taking 2 different driving courses, getting my friends and family to write letters saying nice things about me, writing a letter saying nice things about myself, donating to the judge’s favorite charities, and I even went ahead and took a SASSI-4. That’s an exam you take that a therapist will review and screen you for substance use disorder and risk. My lawyer decided not to show that one to the prosecutors when my result for “Alcohol and other Drug Problem” was “High probability of substance use disorder”.
I completed everything he gave me and the prosecutors offered a plea deal for 15 months of deferred adjudication probation (which allows me to have my record wiped 2 years after completing probation) and 7.5 months with an interlock. If you live in Texas and are convicted of a DWI for the first time, you are required a minimum 12 months of probation and have to have an interlock installed for at least half of your probationary period. They say a mandatory three days incarcerated too, but this is not true. The likelihood of going to jail for your first DWI once convicted is extremely low. I talk to one guy at the bar a year ago who volunteered 30 days in jail instead of taking a plea deal. That didn’t seem like an option for me, but I wouldn’t have taken it because fuck that. He said he wished he hadn’t.
Part 5: Conviction
I voluntarily decided to get sober in September and started attending AA meetings. I received my 1 month chip the day before my final court hearing and I think this helped my case a ton. My final court hearing had to be in person. My lawyer met with the prosecutors one last time and they settled on their original deal of 15 months probation and 7.5 months on interlock, but agreed to drop me from a Misdemeanor A to a Misdemeanor B because of my voluntary 1 month completion of sobriety with AA.
Once I was called to the stand, my lawyer stood with me and spoke to the judge about my case and the plea deal. She asked me a couple yes or no questions. Make sure you always say “your honor” when you finish speaking as a show of respect. The judge will take your respect of them into account. When all was said and done, and this is why I say having a lawyer is very helpful, I pleaded no contest and the judge sentenced me to 12 months of probation because in her words, “that’s as low as I can go”, which told me she would have gone lower if she could, 6 months on interlock, and agreed to dropping me to a misdemeanor B. I wanted to bear hug my lawyer after we left the court. Thanks to him and to my efforts based on his recommendations, and my personal decision to attend AA and get sober, I was dropped from 18 months of probation and 9 months on interlock to just 12 months of deferred adjudication probation and 6 months of an interlock. I am so thankful to the judge for having some mercy on me.
After court, I went to the probation office to get registered, and my first meeting was scheduled for a month later.
Part 6: Probation
Since I had completed all of those things my lawyer suggested I do (all except the donating to the judges charity because I was broke), I had the certification already completed for the mandatory classes. Also, and this one is weird and totally up to the judge, because I was vaccinated for COVID, she dropped 20 hours from my 45 hours of community service. I don’t know why, but I’m not complaining.
My first probation meeting went well. I seem to have a good PO. She did make me aware that I had to give 3 months notice for any planned travel outside of the state, but I travel for work frequently, and usually only get 3 days to 2 weeks notice before I have to fly out, and I work outside of the country on occasion. I contacted my lawyer and he was able to get the judge to approve an Order for Travel, allowing me only 48 hours notice to my PO if I am traveling anywhere inside or outside of the country for work with a mandatory drug test within 24 hours of returning home. Once again, thank you lawyer. A free attorney would have taken months to get this approved, but it only took my attorney a week.
I’m nearly half way through my 12 months of probation, and so far I haven’t had any issues. Every drug test is clean, my certification was approved, she set me up to do my community service at the animal shelter, and that’s it! Almost… I did have to take an alcohol and drug evaluation and, like the SASSI, the counselor who evaluated me, said I have a high probability of a substance use disorder. Pro-tip, if you had a beer while on probation, even if it was just one, don’t admit that… She talked me up and was being super friendly, then asked when the last time I purchased alcohol was and my dumbass admitted to having a beer with some pizza earlier that month. Now, I have to complete a month long $500 outpatient substance abuse treatment program. I start that next week.
Part 7: Interlock
Per my plea deal, I have to have an interlock installed on my car for 6 months and had a month after my court date to get it installed. I shopped around and ultimately went with SmartStart because they had the closest location to me. That was the only reason. The reviews for every company are all equally bad. I’ve had it for almost 5 months, and I can genuinely say this is the worst part of the punishment. These thing drives me insane. I’m required to blow into it 3 times a day, even if I’m not going anywhere. I’ve had to have the technicians fix something with it twice now. The first time it locked me out even though I wasn’t in my car, the second time it kept disconnecting and I couldn’t start my car unless I fiddled with the wires.
I also had someone break into my car a couple months ago, and that dumbass stole the camera. They probably thought it was a security camera, but it is definitely not. The camera only turns on when you are blowing into the device, just to make sure you are the one blowing into it and not cheating the system by having someone else blow into it. You are responsible for any damages to the device, so that ended up costing me $300 dollars to replace plus an additional $90 for the install. That brings me to my next issue… You have to have the device calibrated once a month. Calibration means they download all of the data on the interlock device and send it to your PO. It will record any time you blew dirty, got a warning (this happens if you are close to .025 BAC), didn’t blow when it alerted you while driving, or got a lockout. And it costs $90 each time. I'm looking at 6 months of interlock costing around $1000.
This past month, I started having an issue with my battery and found that the car will completely lose power and I have to adjust the negative terminal to get power back. This wouldn’t be the worst thing ever, and it isn’t the fault of the interlock, but if I get into my car and it has power, and I blow, sometimes the car will lose power when I try to start it. This causes the interlock device to freak out when I get power back to my car, and it won’t allow me to start the engine even though it isn’t asking me to blow. I have to turn my car off, disconnect and reconnect the unit, then sit there for 10 minutes with the battery disconnected before I can reconnect it, blow into the interlock, and finally start my car. This thing is nothing but an expensive pain in my ass.
Just a little over a month left and I can say goodbye to this little piece of shit. Provided my PO doesn’t take a long time to get the request for removal and the judge doesn’t take a long time to respond. That’s my final issue. Even though there was the agreement made in court that I only had to have it for 6 months, I can’t just get it removed once I hit the 6 month mark. I have to get approval for it to be removed and this can take anywhere from a couple days to a couple months depending on how backed up the judge is. According to my PO, the judge is very backed up. It took one of my friends nearly 2 months to get approval to have hers removed. That whole time you still have to use it as normal and go in for monthly calibrations. Our court system is so convoluted.
Part 8: Private Attorney vs Public Defender
Whatever you do, do not use a public defender. If there is any possible way you can afford an attorney, do that. Even if you have to take out a loan, HIRE AN ATTORNEY. My roommate is using a public defender for the trouble she’s in, and it has been nothing but a pain in the ass. They are overworked and will only do the bare minimum for you. My attorney was so easy to contact, went out of his way to help, covered court dates for me, got a great deal with the prosecutors, and gave me tons of helpful advice. Plus he was able to help with the work order and have it approved in a week after I completed court.
My roommate’s attorney is nearly impossible to contact, and when she finally does get a hold of him, he has no idea who she is or what is going on with her case. He’s always asking her to remind him of what happened last, and asking his assistant questions too. He got the prosecutors to agree to consider dropping her case after her first court date and all they needed was her hospital records to review since she was arrested on domestic dispute charges for taking the fall for her abusive ex. She was also arrested on a warrant for missing her court date, which means she is currently on full house arrest. For the past 3 court dates, her attorney has forgotten to give the prosecutors her hospital records.
She also requested partial house arrest so she can return to work but the attorney is dragging his feet on that too. She has now been out of work for 5 months and can never get a straight answer from him when she asks if she can go to work yet. Her place of employment has rehired her twice now, but she keeps getting removed from their system because it is taking so long. It seems this second time was the last straw, because now they won’t contact her back, and she can only get approved for partial house arrest if she has employment and a schedule to prove. It feels like going in circles with this guy, and she’s extremely depressed and defeated, and I’m footing all of the bills because I’m nice and love her. But holy fuck I am BROKE.
Please, for the love of all that is good, hire a private attorney, otherwise you’re probably going to get a shit plea deal, the absolute minimum amount of help, and be stuck to navigate the court system on your own. I regret not hiring an attorney for her, because she would have had her charges dropped back in January if it wasn’t for this shitty public defender, could have gone back to work, and she would have made back what the lawyer cost a month later. Don’t put yourself through that if you don’t have to.
Part 8: Conclusion/TLDR
Anyway, if you made it this far, congrats. If I was helpful in any way, I am glad I could share. This took me a solid 3 hours to write. If you didn’t make it through, here’s the TLDR or a summary for those of you who did read most, if not all of it;
I got in an accident with a curb after blacking out and was arrested for a DWI. I declined to blow, but was given a blood test about 4 hours later, resulting in a .21 BAC. My license was suspended for 6 months because I refused the breathalyzer, although I would still recommend refusing just in case. It’s easier for a lawyer to get a dismissal on a blood test, plus there's a chance you’ll sober up enough to be under the legal limit by the time they get the warrant for the blood test. Make sure to get a replacement license as soon as you get out of jail, because it’ll take a couple months before your license is suspended.
Push for a PR bond if this is your first time being arrested and you have a clean record. The county will pay your bond and you just have to pay a fee. My bond was $1000 and I had a $70 fee. Do not accept a public defender if you can avoid it. Hire a lawyer. If you want all the details of why, you can read that in Part 7. Thanks to my lawyer and his recommendations, my charge was dropped from a Misdemeanor A to a Misdemeanor B, went from 18 months of probation and 9 months on interlock to 12 months and 6 months, and got a work travel order permitted in a week.
He was also able to get me a plea deal for deferred adjudication probation, which means you don’t get officially charged until you complete probation, and can have your record expunged after 2 years of completion. That’s great, because having a DWI on your record can be extremely limiting. You can’t go to Canada for 10 years, can’t rent a car, might not be approved for TSA PreCheck, employers will see it on a background checks, landlords and universities can see it too, and your insurance goes up. Get that expunged as soon as you can.
And finally, I wanted to put all of the costs together, including my extra costs and possible costs for anyone curious of the total.
Car Stuff - $11 for license replacement, $400 to have removed from Impound and towed to a shop, $700 on suspension repairs, estimated $3400 for body work. Total = $4511
Court/Probation Fee's - $70 for PR Bond, $2500 in court/probation fees, $120 for DUI courses, $10 a service hour, so $250 total if I don't do community service, outpatient therapy is $500. Total = $3440
LawyeInsurance - $2700 in lawyer fees, $250 for Restricted Driver License, around $800 for SR22 insurance for 6 months Total = $3750
Interlock - $540 for 6 months of calibrations, $390 for stolen camera, $90 for removal. Total = $1,020
Expunging Record - $600
Total cost when all is said and done - $13,321
Needless to say, I should have taken a $30 Uber. But hey, I've learned a lot because of what I did and there is nothing I can do but make the best of it. You can do this too. This is just one shitty hurdle in life, but you can overcome and move past it with time and effort. Thanks for reading.
