Blame the arrangement -- not the person
2023.03.22 07:11 FalseCogs Blame the arrangement -- not the person
Life comes in many flavours, and each day we face many questions. Some of these questions are judgements. And some of these judgements involve others in significant and meaningful ways. On the one hand, we seek to satisfy our
personal needs -- self-determination -- while maintaining a sense of
virtue -- compassion and justice. For many, there is too much injustice and suffering just to ignore. On the other hand, balancing the needs of us and them beckons honest appraisal of situations and people. But where and how should our finger be pointed?
Core psychology of blame
Among the very earliest struggles in a person's life is the process of ego development. In its simplest, ego is about separating good from bad, self from other. Various theories and models strive to explain the ego, or its development, from various perspectives. For the purposes here, I will be referencing
object relations theory, which is part
psychoanalytic psychology and deals with very early development, starting at birth. A few things will be slightly simplified to keep the text concise.
Within this theory, the first several months involve what is termed the
paranoid-schizoid position. The "schizoid" aspect refers to a cognitive-emotional process known as
splitting. This is where external objects, including people, are split into opposing mental parts -- to form
part objects, or the "good object" version and the "bad object" version of each meaningful external object or phenomenon. For example, when the caregiver is gratifying to the infant, that part object is the "good caretaker"; and when not so gratifying, that caretaker is the "bad caretaker". At this stage of development and understanding, these two "part objects" are
not seen as from the same source. Rather, each is a separate thing appearing and disappearing as circumstances and feelings change. The key word here is
separation, which we will come back to later.
The other aspect of the paranoid-schizoid position -- the "paranoid" aspect -- refers to a curious side effect of splitting everything into "good" and "bad". Because each "part object" is either all good, or all bad, and because the appearance and disappearance of these mysterious entities is more-or-less out of control, the infant begins to resent and fear the bad objects that keep happening. That is, the baby
hates the bad objects but
loves the good objects. This is perhaps the very first stage of moral awareness -- raw, albeit mistaken judgement; love the good; hate the bad; pure, uninhibited
attraction and
repulsion. As a result, or side effect, of these negative or aggressive feelings toward "the bad", the baby may fear possible persecution, invoking
paranoia. Strange though that may sound, there is a bit more to it.
Splitting, as between the mentioned "good" and "bad" objects, is only half the story. The other half of splitting is between "good self" and "bad self". That is, because in the paranoid-schizoid position, objects are temporary and impermanent, so too is the self temporary and fleeting. Moreover, the self is either in comfort, or in distress, giving either "good self" or "bad self" -- depending on circumstance. Since the "good self" appears with the "good object", and likewise the "bad self" with the "bad object", the child fears the appearance of the "bad object" even more. This is because its presence entails essentially collapse of the previous self-concept, as if to enter a realm of deserved persecution for being the "bad self" -- and hence the emergence of paranoia.
On an interesting aside, this manner of judging objects and selves as good or bad based solely on whether one is currently in comfort or pain is the essence of
Stage 1 in Lawrence Kohlberg's
stages of moral development. This is a theory on the progression of individuals throughout life in moral reasoning. Stage 1, termed
obedience and punishment orientation, judges those in trouble or pain as inherently bad. In many cases, this view basically
blames the victim. Further, this type of reasoning is essentially the basis for the "might makes right" mindset seen in some cases of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). One thing to keep in mind is that we all start there, but not everyone stays there. In this way, having crude moral reasoning later in life is effectively a sign of delayed or regressed development, much like a disability -- ie. "morally disabled".
Completing the person
Eventually, the child will reach a point in development where objects become whole and persistent, able to have simultaneously negative and positive qualities. Objects or people may take on accounts, or balances, allowing for consideration of simple reciprocity, including guilt and reparation. Self and caregiver become distinct entities, where "good" self is no longer lost each time caregiver is absent or busy. Assuming successful progression, blame and judgement is no longer split dichotically between two extremes. Otherwise a new type of splitting is come, where objects and entities, though whole and persistent, are either
idealised or
devalued. An important key trend exists between consecutive steps of ego development. This is the trend of
expanding persistence and relatedness. In the part-object stage, objects appear and vanish -- some good, some bad. These raw appearances are neither persistent, nor related. In the whole-object stage, objects become persistent, although at first not really related. Because of this initial lack of relation, the secondary type of splitting -- idealisation and devaluation -- is still likely. Basically, since one person or object is fundamentally unrelated to another, including the self, there is "no harm" in seeing one as
all good, and another as
all bad. Without a stabilising relation, moral judgements can be whimsical yet extreme. A person or object may alternate between being embraced and discarded, depending on present feelings or arrangements. But what makes a stabilising relation?
In general, stabilising relations develop naturally through observation and reason. For example, a caregiver may through time be taken as an intrinsic part of one's need for support. Or a sibling may eventually be seen as fundamentally similar and related. But the building of these relations, or attachments, can be hindered by certain experiences or feelings. For instance, an unstable or unavailable caregiver may leave a child feeling resentment, shame, or guilt. These feelings may then get in the way of building an emotional bond. The resulting lack of security, mixed with possible shame or guilt for not being good enough, may lead to maladaptive and unstable boundaries and self-definition. Some common results are
narcissism and
borderline personality -- the former as an escape mechanism from feelings of inadequacy, and the latter as unstable border-lines between what is embraced, and what is rejected. These early childhood misgivings can then live on subconsciously, infiltrating the psyche and its future engagements.
Competition and judgement
While the capacity for blame and hate may emerge, as described above, from fundamental urges of attraction and repulsion -- mixed with innate capacity for making inference -- there is another powerful instinct at play. Complex social animals have a built-in game of gene-selection and mate-selection. This game relies on a simple heuristic, or objective --
form competitive hierarchies, and select those at the top. The evolutionary assumption is that competition filters out less desirable code. Without reflection, this pre-configured notion may be taken at face value, often in fact elevated -- whether spoken or kept silent -- to something of religious adherence. But is the argument sound?
In simple times, back in the tribe, individuals tended to grow up closely-knit and fairly uniformly. Regardless which parents one had, pretty much everyone had access to the same quality of food, healthcare, and education. Tools and other amenities could readily be made or obtained by any abled body, often with only modest effort. As a result, there was, compared to modern times, an
extremely even playing field. Very little interfered with the above premise that those who achieved success in social hierarchy likely had something special inside. Sure, luck still played a part, but that part was not only far less significant than today, but also far more visible for those of simple tribes. In probably most cases, everybody knew when someone had encountered bad fortune, as individual stories were less hidden.
In the current age, however, personal merit is vastly more obscured and mangled by deceptive forces. The range of disparity in childhood resources and care, the long duration of schooling needed to be competitive, and the sheer price of admission into money-making pursuits, completely destroy any legitimacy the heuristic of selection by social hierarchy may previously have had. Luck may have played a part back then, but today the part played by the lottery of placement into a particular family, time, and place is riddled with inequity. On top of all that, the behaviours and exploits that set one person atop the next are lost from sight through the complex labyrinth of time, legalese, and the unfathomable size of modern society. Hence, the basis of soundness behind judging merit on personal outcome is no longer something that can be supported with any honesty. To praise or blame based on social status and wealth is to partake in folly.
Entity and arrangement defined
Entities are mental objects, and their social accounts, pertaining to people, groups, aggregates, and other moral agents. I say
mental objects for two basic reasons. One, individuals and groups change through time. As the saying goes:
"A person never steps into the same river twice; for on the second occasion, one is neither the same person, nor is it the same river" (paraphrased) ~ Heraclitus of Ephesus.
Two, while we may posit that physical substance seems to exist out there, beyond the mind, we nevertheless must work within our mental model, or worldview, when considering those entities and other things of material or mental reality. Hence, entities and objects can be cognised, or considered, solely as mental objects. This phenomenon of the mental becomes even more apparent when we consider the nature of not only
being, but
identity, character, and
personal story. None of these, from what I can tell, can rightly be said to exist outside the mind. Each has arbitrary, situation-specific, and continually shifting boundaries and connotations.
Arrangements, in contrast, are sets of objects; entities; their relative positions; their internal configurations; and their relations and interactions. Arrangements are hence the
frameworks in place either materially or logically between and within entities and or objects. Common examples include law, culture, contract, education, and social hierarchy -- but also the
physical placement of people and things.
Not surprisingly, the arrangements in place have substantial influence on the outcomes for individuals and society. The same person lowered into two different cultures and circumstances can be expected to have a different time. Education, ideas, values, struggles, and relationships may all be completely changed. The combinations of butterfly effect, disparity of opportunity, and idiosyncratic accident leave open the door for a wide variety of possibility.
Splitting and blaming the entity
Before talking about what to blame, or how to blame it, we might consider some phenomena which may influence one's ability to make sound judgement. As discussed previously, early development can play a big part in both the way one perceives and understands the world, and also the way one feels about, and hence reacts to, situations and challenges within the world. So let us look at some such phenomena.
Splitting, in the post-infancy sense, is the viewing of mental objects -- including and especially people -- as either idealised
all good, or devalued
all bad. The primary hypothesis goes something along the lines that a child who felt insufficiently loved or attended during infancy and early childhood may develop an internalised sense of unworthiness -- perhaps shame or guilt. In simple terms, the child may internalise a judgement of "not good enough". Since early, particularly pre-linguistic experiences tend to be deeply-seated and hard-conditioned, the person later in life may not only have little if any recall of such experience, but likely has little ability to reflect or challenge the resulting feelings or cognitive distortions. Basically, the only remnant clearly visible may be the feelings and intuitions themselves -- sense of shame, guilt, and never being good enough. However, as with other inescapable negative feelings, the child or later person is prone to forming
habits of escape. Most notably here, the person may partake in
defence mechanisms, or unconscious patterns of perception and thinking that seek to turn off or escape uncomfortable or stressful cognitions.
Projection is among the most used defence mechanisms. It involves taking an unwanted feeling or judgement, and throwing it upon someone or something else. The idea is to distance oneself from such negative connotations. In the case of internalised shame or guilt of being "not good enough" during childhood, the person is likely to begin casting this judgement upon others. Unreasonable or unattainable standards may be adopted. The world itself may be viewed as inherently broken or untenable. In the case of splitting specifically, black-or-white, all-or-none thinking may be employed to polarise objects or people -- including oneself -- into all good or all bad -- idealisation or devaluation. This type of projection sorts others into something of angels and demons. Furthermore, as in borderline personality disorder, these dichotic judgements may switch regularly depending on current affairs. The key thing to remember here is that projection is done to escape unfaceable feelings or judgements
about oneself. Use of this defence mechanism may shift blame from self to another, often in a way that is difficult or impossible for the user to see.
More broadly, splitting belongs to a class of phenomena known as
cognitive distortions. In addition to all-or-none thinking, cognitive distortions include overgeneralising, disqualifying the positive, jumping to conclusions, exaggeration, perfectionism, personalisation, always being right, and labelling of others. Obviously these all have significant implications for how one judges others, and indeed how one places blame. For the discussion here, let us talk about one more of these.
Personalisation is when a person takes the blame personally, regardless what external factors may be at play. This style of attribution is inherently self-deprecatory. Alternatively, blame may be placed entirely on another person or group. The distortion here is not that blame is occurring, but that the object is always a conventional moral agent, such as a human or AI. Essentially, an individual with this style of attribution may have an irrational tendency to place blame on agents, rather than circumstances. The trick is understanding
why this happens.
As it turns out, the psychology behind placing
blame disproportionately on people and other agents, rather than arrangements, is driven by the instinct of
social hierarchy. Like brought up earlier, people have a tendency to compare and compete, judging one another into hierarchies of better and worse -- more or less worthy. The more insecure a person feels, or the more internalised shame or sense of inadequacy one has, the more the person may be compelled to cast blame on others. Put simply, insecurity activates the instinct of social hierarchy.
There are some noteworthy side effects to the habit of blaming the agent. One is
scapegoating, or the projection of a group's fears and insecurities onto an external object. In scapegoating, the object chosen is often little, if at all, related to the underlying problem or dysfunction. Rather, the group seeks to unload its insecurity onto an unlucky target. This behaviour is much like that done in narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). One might say that groups too, not just people, can have NPD. One common target of scapegoating is minorities, of pretty much any type, who are often blamed for internal inadequacies of the majority regime. Another side effect of blaming the agent is
kicking the dog, or chain reactions of
blame shifting where each rung of the social hierarchy blames the next rung, all the way to the dog. Similar to scapegoating, kicking the dog picks a target generally unable to defend itself. This style of attribution, moreover, is contagious within organisations, hindering legitimate consideration of how the true underlying issues can best be resolved.
False object of blame
A curious distortion of interest is blindly taking the mental as fact. In the extreme, there is a phenomenon known as
psychic equivalence. This is common in children, where the imagined monster under the bed is believed surely to exist. The line between mental and external is still thin. While most older individuals are beyond such explicit equivalence, we nevertheless have no other option for understanding reality than what our mind beholds. Whether for positive or negative, when we see or imagine someone, we are never seeing the real person. What we witness is our mental model, or mental object, of the other. The same goes for their view of us. When they behold us, they are really beholding someone else -- a construct of their imagination. Likewise, when we judge or blame another, we are really blaming someone else -- a monster of our own creation. Sometimes it can help to remember that in our mental, we are all mental.
Another defence mechanism
Aside from cognitive distortions, another key issue stands in the way of finding truth. In order to resolve deeply-seated emotional baggage, that baggage has to be opened. Yet doing so can be both painful and confusing. The mind has another trick up its sleeve to avoid facing the rain --
intellectualisation. Many have heard of
rationalisation, or the making up of good-sounding stories to explain otherwise irrational or emotion-based actions and choices. Intellectualisation is related, but distinct. Instead of making up stories to seem more rational, intellectualisation makes up complex frameworks and red herrings to distract oneself and others from getting too close to the underlying feeling. Just like for splitting, the usual root cause is believed to be insecure attachment during infancy and early childhood. The result, especially later in life, is the excessive overreliance on logic and complex frameworks to avoid looking inside toward emotion. Reason becomes a comfortable hideout from hideous feeling. This disposition prevents proper reflection, making it hard or impossible to stop idealising and devaluing others. After all, one cannot stop spilling pain until one finds the source of that pain.
Relation to free will
The notion of free will comes in many definitions. These can get technical. But one fairly common theme is what they seek to support -- often some type of personal, or entity-centric, responsibility or blame. Regardless whether logically sound, the pursuit is in many cases a rationalisation of the instinctual and emotional urges of social hierarchy and ego defence. Essentially, many debates about free will are really struggles, or disagreements, on the nature of blame, and to where it should aim. In general, the belief in free will -- regardless the definition chosen -- is argued in support of
some type of entity attribution. Likewise, the
disbelief in free will is usually argued in support of
system attribution, or blaming the way society or culture is structured. A person may choose a definition specifically to assert the desired end -- a psychological phenomenon called
motivated reasoning. This text will avoid choosing a definition, as the underlying principles of behaviour are more important.
A less known paradox exists within the bounds of psychological agency. As is regularly discussed in certain circles of spirituality, there exists a spectrum of self-boundary between
immediate, local, relative and
timeless, non-local, absolute. This mental state of
contraction or expansion depends in part on the grasping or release of fear and attachment. For those unfamiliar, the felt sense of personal agency -- sometimes called
doership -- and one's associated beliefs about personal causation, are prone to change, or shift, depending on the present level of anxiety -- especially social and existential anxiety. There are two key aspects related to the sense of being in control.
The first aspect of interest is that of
causal scope, or how far we trace the causes and influences behind any given event or decision. For example, as I type this, among the most immediate, or smallest causal scopes, is that of my finger pressing a key. Moving toward greater scope, we may consider that the arm is moving the finger. Further, of course, one might say the body is doing the typing. But the scope need not end there. We can trace back through the causal chains, finding all manner of influence. After all, why do I care about this? What social factors and life experiences influenced this cause? The more immediate the causal scope, the longer and more encumbered the causal chains. Hence, even though when afraid we may focus on the more immediate, hence feeling more in direct control, the more our felt boundaries of self and causality contract, the more short-sighted, distracted, and materially-bound we are. The paradox is in the inverted
pyramid of influence atop our actions.
The second aspect relates to impulse and desire versus self-control and composure. Human desire may be divided broadly into basic animal instinct and social image. In Freudian terms, these would be
id and
ego. The former is often viewed as impulsive or animalistic; the latter as controlled and composed. A meaningful portion of pro-free will arguments seems to equate or compare the composure and planning of socially-conscious actions and choices as representative of the essence of "free will". That is, more "controlled" or deliberate actions were exercising greater free will than their more impulsive or animalistic counterparts. But is this assessment sensible?
On the one hand, being more socially aware likely helps to prevent being manipulated or impeded by others. Most would probably agree thus far. But on the other hand, the more we care about fitting in, or otherwise playing the game of social hierarchy, the more we submit ourselves to social norms and other hive behaviours. Essentially, the more we care about image, the more we let society control us. Despite this emotional tether, those with the biggest egos often proclaim the greatest sense of self-determination. Certainly one could argue that being on top of the hierarchy usually entails greater access to social amenities, some of which offering greater freedom. But there may be some right reservations here. Firstly, the enhanced freedom of high status often comes with enhanced fitment and scrutiny into the externally-defined social mould. This is not always the case, as for example with dictators. But secondly, the vast majority of those playing the ego game are neither in positions of status and power, nor emotionally secure enough to go their own way toward personal happiness. Perhaps most prominently, for most social animals, the hive provides only minimal amenity, and maximal loss of autonomy. Yet the internalised ego and self-concept obscure this reality by making cultural, emotional artifacts of socialisation -- especially during childhood -- appear as self-chosen. The person is thus a product of upbringing, but because these aspects of conditioning are so deep and unconscious, their effects are simply taken for granted as part of who one is. Hence, a second paradox exists in that what may appear as evidence for free will -- ego and composure -- is in fact the very thing enacting the long-seated will of the hive.
On a different note of the free will debate, there seems to be a phenomenon somewhat like "free will of the gaps", where any unknown of psychology or physics is received wholeheartedly as evidence for freedom. While no doubt one may never really know, particularly when stuck in the subjective mind-box, one might consider the effect of splitting, or black-and-white thinking. This habit may, without enough reflection, colour one's assessment of personal agency as either wholly existing, or wholly absent. This is not to say undue burden and other explicit interference is unregarded, but more that even the mere existence of randomness or unpredictability may be taken as sufficient reason to ward off the behavioural influences and effects known by modern psychology. Remember that splitting is driven by egoic insecurity, and that ego has vested interest in building the narrative which best places oneself in the social hierarchy of the mind. Impulsive or controlled, what we choose is there to satisfy instinct, whether animalistic, or socially-focused.
Blaming the arrangement
On the other side of inferred causation -- after instinct -- we have experience, conditioning, and circumstance. Experience and conditioning are carry-overs from
past arrangement while circumstance reflects the
present arrangement. For simplicity, I will place all three simply under
arrangement. To borrow from earlier:
Arrangements ... are sets of objects; entities; their relative positions; their internal configurations; and their relations and interactions. Arrangements are hence the frameworks in place either materially or logically between and within entities and or objects. Common examples include law, culture, contract, education, and social hierarchy -- but also the physical placement of people and things.
With this definition in mind, what then does it
mean to blame the arrangement, and what benefit does so doing provide?
First, let us consider the standard Western approach. When we blame the
entity, we are accomplishing three fundamental ends:
- declaring a point of causal significance;
- downgrading social status;
- offloading correction;
On the first point, blaming the entity cuts off past influences, including deficiencies and inequalities in access to essential resources like health, respect, education, and experience. One might wonder why respect is included here. But remember the types of issue that arise from internalised shame, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy. These live on subconsciously, causing non-obvious impairments in judgement and performance. Plus they harm health and performance through elevated stress hormones.
On the second point, blaming the entity lowers its public appraisal, thus cutting off access to the types of resources just mentioned.
On the third point, blaming the entity places the burden of correction squarely on the
already broken component. For simple matters like enforcing social norms or decency, this type of blame is probably effective in most cases. But when we start looking at bigger matters, like health, education, intelligence, self-restraint, and general performance, the idea of forcing the suboptimal party to fix itself starts to break down. All these matters are heavily influenced by external circumstance through time. So telling the person to fix the resulting dysfunction is like telling them to rewrite their past environment, including their upbringing. Moreover, those from broken pasts are much more often the
least supplied -- in both resource and knowhow -- to make things better.
And this brings us to blaming the arrangement. If instead of burdening and downgrading the unfortunate entity, we recognise the conditions of success and failure, we can apply
legitimate effort toward enacting a better future. Obviously society as a whole is
far better equipped to improve not only the outcome of tomorrow, but the conditions of today. Some of us, by chance, receive the winning hand. This may be in genetics, family configuration, area of schooling, or maybe just missing detrimental accidents and injuries. What sense does it make to hoard the helpings of fate, thus preventing the wealth of shared development and growth? In a world literally brimming with technological advancement, is it really better for the majority to live polarised as minority winners and majority losers?
Arguments
One might argue that blame and praise are natural and effective tools for motivation and modification of behaviour. Natural though they may be, these tools are premised on the limited knowledge and resources of tribal past. Like using a hammer to insert a screw, messy tools ought to be reserved for desperate times only. Modern medicine, psychology, and sociology offer a new toolbox, today readily available, for resolving problems with minimal collateral damage. True, not everyone has fair access to these modern amenities, and that is exactly why we need to stop blaming the victim. The technology is here. We simply need to open the gates.
Another common argument is that absent of pointing fingers, people would lose motivation, or stop caring. There may be some truth here. If we remove the whip from their backs, the slaves may begin to relax. But is that really a bad thing? Per-capita material output is already worlds higher due to automation and tooling. But artificial scarcity is brought in to "keep up the morale". This scarcity is largely in the form of wealth and income inequality, which ensure the true producers of wealth -- the workers -- are kept chasing their imagined carrot. The effect, in practice, is burnout and
learned helplessness. The secondary effect is thus decreased performance, which is then "solved" with ever greater artificial scarcity, perpetuating the cycle of lies and suffering. Instead of entertaining a system of slavery with extra steps, why not more equally distribute the tools and technology of efficiency and success?
A darker argument that occasionally gets said out loud is that excessive competition and suffering help to weed out the less desirable traits. Often, it is proclaimed, nature wanted it that way. Ignoring the obvious lack of compassion, is this argument sound? The simple answer is
no. The longer answer is
not even a little. There are two main reasons. Firstly, the dirty game of filtering by social hierarchy was not only sloppy for its original environment of small tribes, but is completely unfit for modern, complex, abstract society. As explained previously, the legitimacy of individual merit is no longer known by fellow tribespeople. Wealth generation and extraction are too far removed and abstracted for proper outside judgement. And complex systems of power and propaganda further prevent equitable distribution of the fruits of labour. Secondly, the amount of time needed for such mechanisms of trait filtering to make an appreciable difference are
substantially longer than the time from now before technology will allow
superior selection of traits. There will be no need to compete in the sloppy ways of the past; nor any need to compete at all. The problem of selection is soon resolved. AI is entering the exponential phase. Petty and primitive worry about traits is irrelevant, for multiple reasons. If anything, those unable to understand this are unfit to be making policy decisions.
An argument which comes up enough to mention is that without blaming the entity, criminals would have free reign, able to do whatever they wanted without repercussions. This argument is missing something quite substantial about what is entailed by blaming the arrangement. Simply, if a certain person is believed to lack the self-control for certain situations or positions, that person will be kept away from those circumstances. A common example is driver's licensing, where one must
earn the privilege by proving competence. And similarly to that, if someone is blatantly acting out and causing trouble, obviously they would be put somewhere safer. The key is rearranging circumstances as needed for best outcome while maintaining reasonable maximum personal autonomy -- without unnecessary harm, restraint, or loss of dignity. Yes, this is more involved in terms of resources and labour, but that is what technology is for. Naturally people prefer to have more privilege, and that alone is motivation enough to care.
And before someone accuses this approach of being or supporting a social credit system, we must make clear the difference. In social credit systems, blame is placed
on the individual ! Sure, the factors used may involve family and acquaintance, but the burden of correction still goes to the person or small group. This is completely different from what is being proposed here.
A final argument relates to expense. On the surface -- especially from within the perspective of a system based on artificial scarcity and excessive wealth inequality -- the idea of having surplus means available for long-term planning may seem unfathomable. People's reluctance in this regard can be understood. But as mentioned above, we are presently, for presumably the first time in our recorded history, entering the age of exponential growth toward advanced artificial intelligence. Things are moving fast already, and both hardware and software are showing no slowing. If computational capacity continues to double regularly like it has for a long time now, we are probably looking at readily accessible post-human intelligence within five to ten years. Short of disaster or tyrannical interference, existing worries about labour and intellect shortage should soon evaporate. Yes, this time things
are different. There is no known precedent.
Summary
Our natural instinct may tell us to blame the person. And Western culture may polarise this tendency to the extreme. But with a little understanding of why we feel the need to downsize others, we may be able to mend the splitting within us. Society may be designed around a game of hierarchy, but one need not partake. By knowing the factors that promote or inhibit wellbeing, and by using the knowledge and tools of modern, we can cast off the shallow assumptions behind us, to build something worth keeping. The first step is looking inside, to see the feeling that fears connection. Then we may look outside, to see that most are facing similar struggle. Situations are what make or break the person. If one should blame, blame the arrangement. The past may not be one for changing, but greater compassion today can find greater love tomorrow.

2023.03.22 04:31 DaiTonight How many MonHuns have you played? What was your experience w them?
I’ve been privileged enough in that I have been able to play every generation in some way or another.
MH1 (2010…ish?) - Didn’t play it and probably never will, but I remember being a little kid looking at the Devil May Cry 3 cover with that “monster hunter demo included!” sticker on it and being soooo fascinated by the title alone. Turns out the demo was not actually included lmao.
Freedom (2017?) - Played about 1 hour of it, iirc after completing Portable 3rd. Didn’t really find a reason to continue with it due to the monsters already being in FU plus how clunky it was.
Freedom 2 (2016 ish) - I’m pretty sure I downloaded the iso to play on PPSSPP only to immediately find out FU is the exact same game with extra content.
Freedom Unite (2016) - What was capcom thinking with that title? At least call it “Freedom 2 Unite” 😭. First MH game I played. I didn’t get far at all, pretty sure I never even left Low Rank. It was just too hard for me, and clunky to boot.
I have plans to get back to it, though.
Portable 3rd (2016) - Second game I played, first one I completed! Definitely the main reason I’m such a big monster hunter fan today. Wish it had a G version.
3U (2022) - Yeah technically P3rd’s G but not the same. I’m currently going through it, I just entered High Rank, but put it on hiatus while I finish Rise.
4U (2020) - I finished the main story (Shagaru) but couldn’t get past that since I played it on my ex’s 3DS. I’ll probably replay it and complete G rank after I’m done with 3U since it’s currently my favorite game in the series.
Generations/U (2020) - I tried Generations on my ex’s 3DS too but only for like one mission. I had a switch and I wanted to get GU, but ended up selling the thing. So yeah.
World (PS4 2019, PC 2020 I think) - I used to live with a friend who bought a PS4 and I got this game for him, I remember we both completed it on separate save files. Became my favorite MH back in the day. After I got my gaming PC it was the first MH game I bought on my own…legally 🙈 it was still my favorite MH but then my experience was soured by…
Iceborne (2021) - It was such a different experience to base World that it has a whole section dedicated to it. From what I’ve seen this is a controversial opinion but I just didn’t …enjoy Iceborne compared to previous games, and it’s due to one thing: the fucking grappling hook. Feeling like I had to tenderize the monster parts every 3 minutes in order to do some decent damage was genuinely grating and it killed my enjoyment of the game after a while. I really wonder what the hell they were thinking.
I still managed to complete it, but in my opinion you can just FEEL this had a different director compared to base World. I’m kinda glad he left CAPCOM.
Rise Sunbreak (2023) - Currently in the middle of it (almost done with HR) and I like it a lot! It feels so streamlined and smooth, even compared to World. I can understand the people saying it’s TOO streamlined at times, and those saying it feels more like Monster Fighter instead of Monster Hunter, but I personally don’t mind that. Controversial opinion apparently, but my favorite part of these games has always been fighting the monsters, not finding them on the map or looking for tracks…HOWEVER I know a lot of people enjoy doing that so I hope MH6 is more like World in that sense. Honestly Rise would be my favorite if it wasn’t for 4U, but it lacks…something, I don’t know what it is, maybe monster selection? My opinion might change for the better when I get to Sunbreak.
I like what they’ve done here, making the Portable game more focused on fighting and goofy anime bullshit while also making the mainline game slightly more “realistic”, hunter focused and slower paced. It will prevent people from feeling burnt out by the nearly yearly releases.
But enough about me. How about you guys?

2023.03.22 04:28 LordCoale The Mercy of Humans: Part 17 - A Calculated Risk
First-
Previous The air ambulance hovered just thirty meters above the raging waters of the river running well above flood stage. My wife, Nalini, piloted the craft with such expert skill that we barely moved, even in the near hurricane level winds. I hooked my safety harness into the airship’s safety line, just above the penetrator basket, while Tajamal leaned out the open hatch, scanning for people to rescue.
“Jabir,” Taj called, “I have three in view. In the trees to our seven.”
The blowing rain made it hard to see, but Taj had the benefit of enhanced vision with his SAR helmet optics. I pulled my visor plate down and sealed it as I looked out the hatch. The optics turned on automatically and I tapped the controls to trigger lowlight and infrared modes. Dalutian’s body temperature is a bit lower than human at 35° but, against the cold river, they stood out like bonfires.
“I see them. Nali, slide us back about twenty meters and I will drop.”
She'd heard Taj’s call and was already sliding back while rotating slightly to the left, placing me in a prime position to drop down into the trees. I remember reading about early search and rescue operations on Terra before the discovery of antigravity technology. They used helicopters, an inelegant, ancient machine that beat the air into submission. The machines were deadly when they malfunctioned, even at low altitudes. Such disasters were rare these days, but no unheard of.
“The wind is picking up,” Nalini called out. “From the north-northeast. Reads twenty-five sustained, gusting to fifty-five.”
“Thanks. I think we can handle it. Maintain at ten meters and keep her steady as you can,” I ordered.
My entire SAR crew was family. My wife is our pilot, her sister Marwa an emergency and trauma nurse. Their brother Zafar and my cousin Tajamal were both SAR pararescue. What was odd about my team is we are all ethnic Arabs that lived among the blond Vikings of Nya Österlen. We had not had the genetic mods to live there which made it a bit of a struggle at times. But we wanted to learn from the best before we moved back home to New Berlin. I will not lie though, the lower gravity here was a relief.
I jumped out of the hatch, swinging from the winch line as Zafar lowered me into the trees. I could see the faces of three Dalutians looking up at us. I could not tell if it was fear, awe, or confusion on their faces. The penetrator pushed through the uppermost branches. I used my feet to push it where I wanted it, edging closer to the natives clinging to the branches.
The wind made it impossible for me to talk to them. The two adults looked absolutely exhausted. I guessed they had been in this tree for quite a while, fighting the wind and rain. They look up at me, eyes wide in shock. I guess I would be too if some strange alien dropped out of the sky to rescue me. I unfolded the penetrator into its basket mode and locked it in place. I motioned to the woman with her child. I pointed at the basket, and she shook her head.
It seems that is the universal ‘no.’ I pointed to her and her child and pointed to the basket again, showing her the harnesses to secure them. The male yelled something I could not understand, and she hugged her child tight and scooted to the basket. I grabbed her around the waist and held them securely as they got into the basket. I quickly strapped their harnesses together and motioned to the last one. I figured he was the father. As he moved around the trunk to where the basket was, he slipped and fell hard. He bounced his head on a thick limb and went limp.
I wasted no time in thought and jumped after him. If he hit the water unconscious, he would die. I could not catch him. He was just out of reach when I hit the end of my tether and hit the quick disconnect.
“What are you doing?” My wife was angry at my choice.
It was, arguably, a bad idea. While by no means as good as a military survival suit, our SAR suits had self-contained rebreathers that allowed us to breathe in toxic or underwater environments. They were tough as hell. The armor was not the ablative, laser resistant military armor but could handle anything I would encounter here. He splashed into the water and sank. I could see his heat signature as the roaring waters ripped him away.
I hit the water. I could feel the cold water momentarily, until my suit’s environmental systems kicked on the heaters. I could see his body with my heat sensors. I triggered the sonar, and the computer painted the inside of my visor with the information. The floodwaters held many dangers, mostly from floating or submerged wood. Often these hazards were entire trees ripped from the ground upriver. I could still get crushed if I made a mistake.
“Jabir?” My wife was really angry.
“I am fine. Take the ship a klick downstream,” I ordered. “Zafar drop the net when I get close.”
“Roger,” Zafar answered. “I have you on the scope.”
All the SAR suits are tied into the airship’s datanet. With the locator beacons and health monitors, the flight crew could track me easily. I was not worried about them tracking me. Retrieving me was another thing entirely. But that was a worry for later. I still had to reach my target. I am an excellent swimmer. Anyone who wants to work in search and rescue is required to be better than average.
I kicked off strongly, pushing hard to catch up. It was easy to do since he was just bouncing along like a rag doll. If I cannot get to him soon, he will drown. I caught up and reached out, grabbing a handful of feathers. I felt some pull loose but enough held that I was able to pull him into a tight hold. He was a lump of dead weight as I pushed to the surface.
I could see the airship hovering over the river. Nalini held it in the perfect position. She held the airship at five meters, with the starboard hatch open and net barely in the water. Zafar and Taj knelt inside the hatch, looking at me as I bobbed down the river. I was at the mercy of the floodwaters. Holding onto the Dalutian meant I had little ability to swim. I kicked as hard as I could to position the best I could for the net to catch us. I hit sideways, my left arm snaking into the net while hooking my legs giving me three points of contact.
“Lift the net,” I yelled. “Lift the net!”
Zafar hit the lift and Nalini pulled up, lifting us out of the water. The net retracted into the roof and deposited us in a wet heap in the deck. Taj closed the hatch as I popped my visor and removed my helmet. Zafar pulled the male out of the net and worked to get the water out of his lungs. Only then I heard the mother and child crying in fear. I could not tell what they were saying, but I could see their concern.
Marwa took over, placing an oxygen mask over his beak. “Get us to a hospital,” she said. “He has a head injury and water inhalation. He’s breathing but it’s shallow. Damn, I wish I knew their physiology better.”
Zafar waved his sensor wand over the male’s little body. I knew they were smaller than us, but I did not realize just how much smaller they were.
“Blood pressure is low,” Zafar said. “At least that’s what the computer says. And body temp is low. Let’s get him on the stretcher and into a thermal blanket.”
I helped move the body onto a stretcher mounted on the bulkhead. All the stretchers were equipped with body heaters and the thermal blankets were little more than high tech electric blankets with the added ability to wick away water. This would help stabilize him, but he needed a full hospital.
The other two were chattering at me but I still had no idea what they were saying. “Do we have the translator package downloaded?”
“You don’t have it?” Zafar asked.
“No. I did not see it in the download files.”
“I pushed it automatically to your suit,” he replied. “Check for a file labelled Dal1.5. It should have installed by itself.”
“Well, it didn’t.” I pulled up the files on my suit’s computer. “Found it. Installing it now.”
With the file installed, I could finally understand what they were saying, for all the good it did me. I could tell they were family. The child was hysterical and the mother struggling to calm her. We got the father strapped in and secure. Through the deck, I could feel the engines vibrating as Nali pushing the airship to its maximum speed. Marwa had the father well in hand, so I turned to his family.
“We will be at a hospital within a few minutes.” I heard my speaker translate my words into their sing song language. It sounded like one of the tonal languages from earth mixed with a parrot’s call. “We have doctors who can help him. Do you understand?”
They both started talking and the mother shushed the child. Or at least, the translation software made the sounds. Often there is something lost in the translation.
“Who are you?” The mother asked.
“I am Jabir Tamraz.”
“No, who are all of you? I have not seen any of your species before.”
“Oh. We are humans.”
“Humans?” She recoiled a bit but then seemed to shake as she digested the news. We knew coming in to this mission that there would be some fear or anxiety. Most of the Confederation species had no real meaningful interactions with humanity. And even though some of the Dalutains had traded with us before, they were the minority.
“Yes, we are humans,” Marwa replied. “There are thousands of us out looking for survivors and doing what we can to rescue them. Just as we did for you.”
“But… Why?” The daughter spoke softly, but the translator spoke at full volume.
“Because… Because we felt it was the right thing to do,” I replied. “Many of our people have needed help. Sometimes desperately needed help. Most of the time, that help came. But not always. But our people have never needed help as badly as yours do. I am sorry we were not able to get here sooner.”
“Our government asked the Confederation for help. But it never came.” Again, the translator could not put her bitterness into the translation we heard. But I could tell by her body language that she was angry and defeated.
“I cannot speak to that. But I can tell you that we are here and not going away.”
“Prepare to land. We will be at the hospital in less than a minute,” Nali called over the intercom.
The ship settled onto the ground with barely a bump. My wife is the best pilot around. The back ramp lowered and several people ran aboard, two picked up the father and carried the stretcher off the ship. Two others checked on our other to passengers and quickly led them off and into the hospital.
I was happy that we had managed to save them, but we had more to do.
Nali grabbed my arm roughly and pulled me around to face her. “What the hell was that?”
“I almost lost him.”
“You broke protocol. We never disconnect the tether in a situation like that! What the hell were you thinking?”
“I was thinking that I could not let him die. Not in front of his family.”
“And what of me? I could have seen
you die!” She had tears in her eyes, but they were tears of anger. “You are not immortal. You have a wife and daughter, too.”
“I know. It was a calculated risk,” I replied. “Our SAR suits can take a log of damage before we get hurt, and I had three hours of oxygen. He did not. If I had not gone in after him, he would have died. I was his only hope of surviving. We did not choose this profession because it was safe. We chose it because we felt a calling to save lives.”
“Don’t you die on me.” She grabbed me in a tight hug. “Don’t you dare. I cannot live without you.”
“Don’t say that. You are the strongest person I know. You were strong as steel before I met you. That was why I fell in love with you. And if anything, you are stronger now. You push me to be stronger. If anyone in this universe can survive, it is you.”
“Just… Don’t do that again without warning me. Okay? Promise me.”
“I promise. I will not do something stupid without warning you first.”

2023.03.22 02:53 spiderbacon12 Curious what everyone thinks of Synchro and Pendulum cards?
I’ve played YuGiOh games since the beginning and understand there was a need to move forward and change, but I feel like the new types of cards just break the game.
I just went against someone online (just downloaded the game to try it out) and he was able to summon 5 x 4800 attack monsters by his second turn.
So it’s either a pay to win system or the game itself is broken and no longer caters towards people looking to casually play.
Which is it and what do you think?

2023.03.21 23:35 TheLaw_Son Bell Witch & Adams, TN
I ran across Mr. Ballen's content and saw that he recently did a video on his YouTube channel around the Bell Witch Hauntings. I made a post over on Paranormal a few years back and figured there might be interest in having
My Experiences with the Bell Witch Haunting covered by Mr. Ballen? If not, no skin off my back.
Extra context for the curious:
- I lived through these things and that's been enough for me really. I have been intrigued by the thought of having someone legit go there and investigate the activity. Mainly to help me feel more sane, but also, I genuinely want to know what's up with that area. Because I don't think it was just the graves on the property and adjacent land, but something much darker.
- The only reason that I really share these experiences is because I find catharsis in telling others what happened to me there. It gets easier to find peace with it every time, almost like taking the power back or something /shrug....also I figured people should just know how messed up it is in Robertson County, specifically Adams and the Red River - especially at night.
- I've been doing a lot better (long story), but to this day I still have a hard time integrating back into society. I can't seem to hold a job longer than a few months before anxiety and stress take over, but I do try. I think the trauma of having been there has screwed me up in ways I'm still figuring out.
- Things usually take time to build up there, which is why if you're going to investigate it thoroughly, a longer stay is probably needed. There are wildly unexplainable things that happen during day light too don't get me wrong, but if you're really wanting to capture something significant, a longer stay is needed. You definitely have to get permission to go on that land, a local farmer owns the land now as far as I know and you'd have to ask around town in Adams or Cedar Hill.
- If you go there, my sister and I carved our names in the big tree near the old house foundations. Curious to know the carvings are still there (southeast side of the biggest tree between the river and where the house stood).
- There's always the Bell Witch Cave tour that you can do if you don't get permission from the farmers in the area. The tour guide and her family actually welcome people to try and stay in the cave overnight. To my knowledge no one has ever been able to stay more than a few hours in there, let alone sleep.
- With all of that said, I STRONGLY caution against setting foot anywhere near there after sundown unless you are prepared to be royally freaked out. I would be remiss without restating that there is something extremely dark / negative there. I realize Mr. Ballen doesn't really do on-site visits/videos from what I can tell, but figured I'd say this bit for anyone who sees this and decides they want to check it out in person.
- Edit: if you download the Google Earth desktop version, you can scroll back in time to see the ranch house we lived in, it's not there past 2010 because of the flood.

2023.03.21 21:07 SaviousMT My review of the Diablo II Open Beta
Hello, I have been playing Diablo I since 1997 and am here to review the open beta for Diablo II.
I started the download before I went to bed last night, as the beta was a beefy 150 MB and as excited as I was to check it out, I didnt want to get the download interrupted by my mom picking up the phone, and my 56K US Robotics modem maxes out at 5.4 KBps.
The download went through, and I was able to install the beta without issue. I considered starting before I left for school, but that would just entice me to play hooky for the day and I have a biology test that I dont want to have to make up.
As soon as I got home from school, I immediately connected to the internet and went to jump in. Unfortunately, many other people had the same idea and I couldnt get in.
After a few hours though, I finally got in, and was able to make a Barbarian, as that is the only class available for the open beta. I was most excited to make a Paladin, but that will have to wait.
I stepped out into the Blood Moor with a few other barbarians, some who were already level 3! My first quest was to kill the Den of Evil. This was not as easy as it sounded, as there were several monsters that revived other monsters, and I kept having to kill them. Hopefully these get nerfed in the full game, as it was extremely tedious to have to keep fighting them over and over.
Eventually, I made it to the final boss of the Den of Evil, Corpsefire, a zombie with a pack of minions. I died to Corpsefire and his cronies at least 5 times, although I lost track and almost quit in frustration. He is definitely overtuned, his elemental damage is deadly. I had to ask for help from one of the higher level characters in the game to help me kill Corpsefire, and then when he finally succumbed, his body exploded killing me again. For the first quest of the game this seems way too difficult.
I eventually made my way through the rest of the Blood Moor and found the next area, the Cold Plains. I was very disappointed to find that it had the exact same tileset as the Blood Moor. Just more boring green grass and stone walls. Its a little disappointing that Blizz took the lazy route and just reused the same graphics for an entirely new area, and I think players will eventually get bored of looking at the same thing over and over.
Additionally, there was a "Waypoint" at the entrance to the Cold Plains, which allowed me to teleport back to town without using a town portal. This is clearly catering to newer players as a "save point", which is also very disappointing. Not having to run back to continue your fight against evil kind of takes away from the point of going back to town to rest unless you are using a town portal.
The cold plains had a dungeon called "Caves" which seemed very uninspired, and was the exact same tileset as the Den of Evil, just a cave with a bunch of monsters in it. The Cave had two floors to it though, and the second floor was much smaller and filled with a ton of powerful monsters. After many more deaths and struggling with mana issues, I was able to open the magic chest that contained a "chipped sapphire". I was able to socket this in my helm and increase my mana significantly, which helped me use bash 3 more times before I ran out of mana, greatly increasing my damage output.
I continued my adventures through the Cold Plains and found "The Burial Grounds". Within the Burial Grounds was an absolutely unkillable boss named Blood Raven. This monstrosity raised zombies from the ground to protect her, and ran so fast I could never actually get an attack off on her. After many many futile attempts at killing her, I simply left and made a new game titled "Blood Raven". Some level 7(!) characters joined the game and we all used the waypoint to the cold plains and rushed to find the Burial Grounds.
On the way, we found a Gem Shrine, which one of the higher level barbarians clicked and out popped a Ruby. I asked them what that was and they said it upgrades a gem in your inventory to the next level. I assume this is what the end game will consist of, as these gem shrines seem to be quite rare, and only finding chipped gems (I had found a couple more in my adventures) means it takes several gem shrines to upgrade a gem fully. I am curious to see how much power the gems provide, as they seem to be the focus of items.
These high level barbarians quickly dispatched Blood Raven for me, and a yellow hand axe popped out, which I wasnt even able to loot because they took it. I felt a little miffed because I had spent a lot of time trying to kill Blood Raven, only to have my reward taken by someone else.
I asked the other players what was next, and they replied "ng" and all left the game. Confused, I ran around the Burial Grounds and found no exit, so I went back to the Cold Plains to explore some more. The Cave was still there, but still scuffed from my last adventure into the Cave, I chose to explore more of the Cold Plains. After about 15 minutes I had discovered the whole area and killed all the monsters, only to find there was no exit.
I went back to the cave and was able to clear it out without too many deaths this time, and even found some better items to help, including a yellow quilted armor tha tgave me 2 strength. I also found a LOT of blue items, it seems like they hand out those like candy. Some of them seem super over powered, I found a belt that increased my stamina by 5 which is the most important stat if you are looking for speed, as youll spend all your gold on stamina potions otherwise.
I felt comfortable enough now that I could start farming, so I made a new game and looked for gem shrines. I gained another level getting my bash to level 4, and looked at the rest of the skills. Many of them seem uninteresting. There is a shout called battle orders which increases your life by a %, but my life is only 150 and getting a % increase to life seems to not be worth all the points it would take to get to unlock battle orders. There is a skill in one of the trees called Increased Stamina though, which is probably the best skill, as running out of stamina constantly is a pain. Unfortunately it is level 18 and I dont think its possible to get that high, even when the game is released, as my XP gain really started to taper off after getting to level 6. Only the most dedicated players will make it to that high of a level.
I played for another 15 hours or so over the next few days, farming for gem shrines, which was pretty boring. Eventually I got a Flawless Ruby, but the level requirement on it was level 12 and I wasnt even level 10. I tried the PvP out, and that was really uninteresting, it basically came down to you and your opponent standing their clicking each other until one of you died.
I have to say, after Diablo 1, I was expecting a lot more from Blizzard. Gem Shrines are cool to find, but they are so rare I am not sure how they can classify gem farming as an end game experience. The levels all looked the same, either grass and rocks or a cave. Blood Raven is still too difficult, even at my high level I struggle to track her down and kill her, but she drops good loot, sometimes a yellow item, and I am still trying to beat one of the other barbarians in a duel.
Im not holding my breath on this one, the end game seems boring and repetitive and I am tired of seeing green grass.

This is a method that goes over how you can make
$5,000 - $10,000 risk-free by signing up for new user bonuses with various regulated sportsbooks (earnings depend on your location). Because I am in Canada, I will cover the Ontario market, but if you live in other regulated areas you can still use 99% of this guide to learn how to make money on sportsbooks. I made another guide on Sports Betting Arbitrage
here, where I show you have you can make
$500 per day, risk-free. I have personally made over
$25,000 from sports betting and will answer any questions you have in the comments!
Basics of Sports Betting
Here are some common sign-up bonuses, terms and conditions (T&Cs), and sports betting lingo:
Different Sign-Up Bonuses: - Deposit Match – A deposit match is what it sounds like, when you sign up for the sportsbook and make a deposit, the sportsbook will match your deposit in bet credits or cash.
- Bet & Get – When you sign up and place qualifying bets, the sportsbook will grant you a certain amount of bet credits (usually significantly more than your initial bet).
- 2nd Chance Bet – Some sportsbooks will offer a 2nd chance bet where the bettor only gets a bet credit if your initial bet LOSES. To make the most of this bonus, you should intentionally lose on the initial sportsbook and cover your loss on a different sportsbook and then use your 2nd chance bet.
Common T&Cs: - Minimum Odds – Some sportsbooks will implement a minimum odds clause in their T&Cs for bets placed in connection to a promotion. If the book sets the minimum odds to -200, this means you must bet on odds of -200, -150, +150, +200, … etc.
- Wagering Requirements / Rollover – A rollover clause means that you must bet the amount of your deposit a certain amount of times. For example, a 5x rollover on a deposit of $100 means you need to wager $500 to claim the bonus. Be careful because sometimes you need to rollover both the deposit and the bonus.
- "Stake Not Returned" – When a book does not return your stake, this means that for the bet credits you are granted, you only get the winnings and NOT the stake. For example, if you use $100 of bet credits that don't return the stake, and you bet it on a +150 event that wins, your account balance will go up by $150. If they did return the stake or if it was just a cash bet, your account balance would go up $250 (because you would get the initial $100 stake back).
- Flexible Bet Credits - if a bet credit is flexible, it means you can bet in any increment you want, for example: if you get a $100 flexible bet credit, you can place 100 bets of $1 each, 2 bets of $50 each, 4 bets of $25 each, etc.
- Semi-Flexible Bet Credits - if a bet credit is semi-flexible, it means you can bet in the increment that the sportsbook allows, for example: if you get a $100 semi-flexible bet credit that is split into 4 bets of $25 each, you cannot place 8 bets of $12.50 or 10 bets of $10.
*These are just a few confusing T&Cs. You must read the T&Cs of each promotion to ensure that you understand what the bonus entails because that could change your strategy to maximize each bonus!
Common Sports Betting Lingo: - Stake vs. Winnings vs. Payout - in betting, if you place a bet of $100 on the Raptors to win at +250 odds. If the Raptors win, you win $250 and are paid a total of $350. From this example, the $100 was the stake, the $250 is the winnings and the $350 is the payout.
- This guide assumes you know the basics of sports betting. If you do not, please follow this link to find a quick online guide.
Maximizing Winnings on Each Sportsbook
- Although all of the following sportsbooks are in Ontario, if you live in the US or Europe, many of these same books will have identical (or very similar promotions), so this will still apply to you.
- If you are in the US or Europe, go to my google drive resource here and download my bet tracking excel sheet. Under the "Bet Credit Retention" tab, you can customize your own bet credit terms, and my excel sheet will tell you exactly how much you need to bet to get a risk-free win! Remember to read the instructions for the excel sheet (also in my google drive) because it can get a little tricky.
- I will also put a ⭐ rating (out of 5) which only rates the sportsbooks sign-up bonus, which is not the same as what I would rate them overall!
- As a note, in the title of each credit, I will specify whether the stake is returned, what the rollover is (assume no rollover if I say nothing), and whether the bet credits are flex, or semi-flex (assume just neither if I say nothing).
⭐⭐⭐
888Sport - 100% First Deposit Match (up to $250) - Stake Not Returned - Deposit $250 and bet in $50 increments on odds of -200 or greater (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Claim your $250 bonus and wager it on a +300 event, wager $562.50 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook
- When the credits don't return the stake, wagering your bet credit on the highest possible odds will allow you to make the most money off your credit (in this case I chose +300 odds because they are quite high, and going above that is tough to find, even with the screening software I explain later on in this document)
- I explain why betting your credit on the highest possible odds is optimal later on, so keep reading!
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $187.50
- Reasoning: If the +300 wins, you get the $750 of winnings and since you bet $562.50 on the opposite side, your net payout is $187.50! If the -300 event wins, you get the winnings of $187.50 and you get your original $562.50 stake returned (since you used bet credits on the +300 side, you have no cost so you are still up $187.50 regardless)!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Bet365 - Bet $1 and Get $250 in Bet Credits - Stake Not Returned & Flex - Deposit $10 and bet in $1 on any odds (this must be done according to the T&C) – no need to hedge on this as its only $1
- Claim your $250 bonus and wager it on a +300 event, wager $562.50 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook
- Remember, because these are flex credits, you can place a smaller bet using your credits (on the +300 side) so you don't have to cover so much on the -300 side. And this goes for every other flex credit too, not just Bet365!
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $187.50
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Bet99 - 100% Matched Bonus on First Deposit (up to $500) – Stake Returned,
Flex & 5x Roll - Deposit $500 and wager your deposit 5 times on odds of -125 or greater (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook (since these are covered, you make nothing on these initial bets)
- Because the stake is returned, you can treat the bonus as a cash bet so you can bet the bonus on a +100 event and cover a +100 bet on another sportsbook (by betting $500 on the other sportsbook)
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $500
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Betano - 100% Matched Bonus on First Deposit (up to $500) – Stake Returned,
Flex & 5x Roll - Deposit $500 and wager your deposit + bonus ($1,000) 5 times on odds of -200 or greater (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Claim your $500 bonus and wager it on a +100 event, wager $500 on the opposite side of the original line at +100 on another sportsbook
- Betano is a great sportsbook for hedging because it has a “MAX” button which tells you how much you can bet, allowing you to execute on another sportsbook first with high confidence that Betano will accept your bet on the opposite line!
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $500
⭐⭐⭐
BetRivers -
2nd Chance Bet (up to $500) – Stake Not Returned - Deposit $500 and wager your deposit on odds of -200 or greater (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bet on another sportsbook
- The goal with 2nd Chance Bets is to intentionally lose on the original sportsbook because you only get the credit if your bet loses. So you should try and bet on the highest odds possible (+400, +500, +600, +700 … etc.) and cover your bet on another sportsbook. I'll explain this later in more detail.
- Once you’ve intentionally lost on BetRivers, claim your $500 bonus and wager it on a +300 event, wager $1,125 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $375
⭐⭐⭐⭐
BetVictor -
100% Matched Bonus on First Bet (up to $300) – Stake Not Returned & Flex - Deposit $300 and wager your deposit on odds of +100 or greater (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Claim your $300 bonus and wager it on a +300 event, wager $675 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $225
⭐⭐
Betway - 100% Matched Bonus on First Deposit (up to $200) – Stake Returned,
Flex & 10x Roll*
- Deposit $200 and wager your deposit 10 times on odds of -150 or greater (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Claim your $200 bonus and wager it on a +100 event, wager $200 on the opposite side of the original line at +100 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $200
⭐⭐⭐
Caesars -
2nd Chance Bet (up to $500) – Stake Not Returned - Deposit $500 and wager your deposit on any odds (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Similar to BetRivers, you want to intentionally lose to claim the bet credit, so bet on the highest possible odds where you can find a hedge on another sportsbook
- Once you’ve intentionally lost on BetRivers, claim your $500 bonus and wager it on a +300 event, wager $1,125 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $375
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
DraftKings -
Bet $5 and Get $200 in Bet Credits – Stake Not Returned & Semi-Flex - This promotion is unique because you need to deposit $10 and bet $5 on a winning pre-game moneyline for any College Basketball game and then you get 8x $25 bet credits (totaling $200). Pick a heavy favourite to maximize your chances (there are no minimum odds for this)
- Claim your $200 bonus (of 8x $25 bets) and wager each bet on a +300 event, wager ~$450 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $150
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fanduel -
2nd Chance Bet (up to $1,000) – Stake Returned & Flex - Deposit $1,000 and wager your deposit on any odds greater than -300 (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Similar to BetRivers and Caesars, you want to intentionally lose to claim the bet credit, so bet on the highest possible odds where you can find a hedge on another sportsbook
- Once you’ve intentionally lost on Fanduel, claim your $1,000 bonus and wager it on a +100 event, wager $1,000 on the opposite side of the original line at +100 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $1,000
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
LeoVegas - Cash Bonus on First Three Deposits (up to $500) - LeoVegas offers a unique sports welcome bonus that will require some explaining
- The bonus is claimed in three different deposits. Firstly, you are going to want to deposit $300 and wager it 10 times on odds greater than -125 and hedge your bets on another sportsbook. Once you’ve done this, you claim a $300 cash bonus straight into your account balance.
- Next, you are going to deposit $100 and wager it 10 times on odds greater than -125 and hedge your bets on another sportsbook. Once you’ve done this, you claim a $100 cash bonus straight into your account balance. Repeat this one more time for another $100 cash bonus and then you are all done!
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $500
⭐⭐⭐
NorthStar Bets -
100% Matched Bonus on First Bet (up to $150) – Stake Not Returned - Deposit $150 and wager your deposit on odds of -500 or greater (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Claim your $150 bonus and wager it on a +300 event, wager $337.50 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $112.50
⭐⭐⭐
PartySports -
100% Matched Bonus on First Deposit (up to $100) – Stake Returned,

- Claim your $100 bonus and wager it on a +100 event, wager $100 on the opposite side of the original line at +100 on another sportsbook
- Guaranteed risk-free profit: $100
⭐⭐⭐⭐
PointsBet - 2nd Chance Bets (up to $1,000) – Stake Not Returned & Semi-Flex - Pointsbet’s welcome offer gives you a 2nd chance bet offer for your first 10 days as a participant. You can get $100 in bet credits (broken into 2x $50 bet credits) each day!
- To claim this, deposit $1,000 on your first day and wager $100 on any odds greater than -200 (this must be done according to the T&C) and hedge your bets on another sportsbook
- Similar to BetRivers, Caesars, and Fanduel, you want to intentionally lose to claim the bet credit, so bet on the highest possible odds where you can find a hedge on another sportsbook
- Repeat this step for 9 more days and claim your $100 bet credit each day!
- Once you have all 10 of your $100 bet credits, wager them on a +300 event, wager $225 on the opposite side of the original line at -300 on another sportsbook

Summary: Summing all of these guaranteed profits up, you can get
$6,437.50 by completing all of these sign-up bonuses! Many of these same sportsbooks also offer promotions for active users that you can use as well (reload bonuses, boosted odds, refer-a-friend promos, etc.) so you can continue making money once you have done the sign-up promotion.
Finding Odds
How the Previous Section Assumes that Odds Work: If the Lakers play the Warriors and the Warriors moneyline is +100 on Fanduel, and since the Warriors will win 50% of the time (based on those odds) then the Lakers will also win 50% of the time. Because of this, based on expected payoffs, we assume Fanduel will have the Lakers moneyline at +100.
How Odds Actually Work: Fanduel obviously wants to make money, so if they put the Warriors at +100, they will put the Lakers at -150 to give Fanduel a nice chunk called a spread. This is inevitable in the sports betting industry because sportsbooks need to make money. Assuming the spreads are 20% (which is like a tax on each bet), instead of making the original $6,437.50 from the sign-up bonuses, you will only make $5,150.00, meaning you would lose $1,287.50 if you took that 20% spread!
How can we Save the 20% Tax: Software! Odds change every second of the day and after months of searching for odds manually, a very inefficient and time-consuming task, I finally found a tool called OddsJam. OddsJam screens millions of odds per second on hundreds of sportsbooks, including all the sportsbooks I’ve mentioned above. Using the OddsJam platform has saved me thousands of dollars and is the reason I was able to make so much off sign-up bonuses.
If you decide to start harvesting bonuses on sportsbooks, using OddsJam is a must and you can use my
link and promo code “

- Once on the Arbitrage Betting tool, use the filters to find odds

We can repeat this process to harvest the sign-up bonus!
The Math Behind the Bets: - If we bet $50 on Fanduel on under 195.5 at +850. To covehedge this bet, we need to bet $410 on Betano on the over at -625
- Since there are only two possible outcomes (and we have bet on both of those outcomes), we are guaranteed to win $15.52! On top of that, we are also completing our bonus wagering requirements!
- With this particular bet, if the over wins, we get our $50 stake back and we get the winnings of $425 on Fanduel. Since we also bet $410 on Betano and this bet did not win, we lose our stake. Because the winnings of the initial bet are greater than our stake for the opposite bet, we come out on top!
- If the opposite happens, we get our stake back on Betano and we get winnings of $65 which covers the $50 stake we do not get back on Fanduel.
Why we Want to Lose our 1st Bet for "2nd Chance Bet" Offers
- For 2nd chance bets, we only get the bet credit if our first bet loses
- So to give us the highest chance of losing our first bet, we should bet on the highest possible odds (+300, +500, +1000, etc.) where we can find opposite odds on another sportsbook
- For example, below we see odds of +250 on Betrivers and odds of -238 on Betano for the Pelicans – Mavericks game. The +250 odds imply that there is a low chance that this will occur so we take this bet because we know we have a $500 2nd chance bet on BetRivers
- Using the provided calculator, we bet $500 on the over using the Betrivers and we also bet $1,232 on under using Betano
- If the over loses, which it should ~75% of the time based on those odds, we win $517 on Betano and we lose our initial stake of $500 on BetRivers – so we still come out with a $17 profit
- We are then awarded with our 2nd chance bet of $500 on BetRivers which we can use as described in a previous section of the guide
Why we Use Bet Credits on the Highest Possible Odds
- When given bet credits (that do not return the stake), we want to maximize our guaranteed earnings
- You may be wondering why I keep saying you should bet on odds of +300 (which are high) for each sportsbooks bonus guide
- The reason is that we want to maximize the potential payout-to-credit ratio, which gives us a higher retention of the bet credit
- As you see in the chart below, the higher the bet credit odds, the higher retention of the bet credit!

2023.03.21 18:58 a15minutestory [WP] You are a student in the most prestigious magic academy in the kingdom. No one knows how you got in, sure you have amazing magic potential, but you’re “magic blind” meaning you can only feel the presence of magic and not see any magic. [Part 64]
A slave-driving murderer had just publicly declared war on us. The cheering and applause of the people standing around us was an eerie and ominous accompaniment to the feeling of dread swelling in my chest and radiating down to my stomach. He'd captured
all of them thus far. I swallowed and dropped my gaze down to the pavement as it dawned on me that all of those people had tasted freedom, and were then immediately and mercilessly hunted down and dragged back to hell.
But there was an interesting caveat there. He called us by the names O'Malley had erroneously wrote down in his ledger. The men that were chasing us that day had picked up our
actual fake aliases, but then we'd killed them at the inn. It seemed that knowledge died with them– a drop of good luck in a raging downpour it seemed.
"William," I said just loud enough to catch his attention.
He turned and eyed me. "Huh? Were you talking to me?"
I lifted an eyebrow. "Yeah. Who else would I be calling William?"
He narrowed his eyes, "It's
Tovin, you spaz."
I glanced around nervously. Nobody appeared to have been listening to us. I took him by the shoulder and led him away from the crowd gathered around the picture boxes. "What are you doing?" I hissed.
"What am
I doing?" he scoffed. "What are
you doing? You know my name. What, are you playing a game right now?"
"Our aliases," I said through my teeth. "We're using fake names, remember?"
His expression changed from annoyed and confused to forlorn and somber. He swallowed and looked away. "... I'm losing it again, aren't I?" he asked.
I remained silent. I didn't know what to say. I didn't want him to feel worse about it, but that would have been a dangerous slip-up in front of the wrong person. Before now, I was starting to think that Tovin back home had overblown how quickly the mental decline would be.
"Don't worry about it," I said finally, passing him on the sidewalk further into the city. "Come on. We need to find a way to make some money."
"And fast," he added, trailing behind me. "We need food, clothes, and a couple of beds. And more cigarettes, too. I've only got a few left and I'm trying to make them last."
We walked the mazelike streets of Bronzegirder looking for work. I wasn't used to Diesel society yet and often found myself hung up on storefront windows that marketed all kinds of gadgets and technology. I would do my best not to stare when people walked by wearing metallic pieces on their persons.
Some wore gadgets on their forearms, some on their wrists, and others in various other areas. I wondered what purpose they served, where they were sold, and how expensive they could be. And it wasn't just the gadgets. There were far more dark-skinned people here than we had in Galgia. It was something I had read about but never experienced. They ranged from light tan all the way to almost black, and it just added to the culture shock.
There appeared to be people living in the buildings above the storefronts. The tall towers we had seen in the far distance earlier served as housing as well as business space. Diesillians stood on their balconies, some hanging wet laundry, others leaning over their railing while they enjoyed a drink or a smoke. We passed so many things I would have wanted to stop and look at were we not being hunted. DuPonte seemed awfully sure of himself when he said he'd find us, but for the life of me, I couldn't imagine how one would find
antything they were looking for in this city.
"I'm totally lost," I admitted. "We need a map or something."
He remained quiet. I turned to speak to him more directly only to find that he wasn't behind me anymore. My stomach dropped as I looked around at the sea of people.
"William?" I called out. "William!"
It was no good. I'd have to literally scream if I wanted to breach the drone of the crowd, and I couldn't afford to draw too much attention to myself. There was also the possibility that he'd forgotten his name again anyway. I adjusted the straps of my backpack and sighed deeply before doubling back. He couldn't have wandered
too far away, and he'd be easy to spot against the horde of people in more modern clothing.
I kept close to the storefronts as I picked up my pace. I began to peer into each store as I passed them. The longer I searched, the more I worried. He wasn't in his right mind. He'd get himself noticed and captured if he let too much slip, or pulled down his hood. I came to the turn we had taken after we'd left the picture boxes. He was with me at this point, I was sure of it. I turned around and swallowed as I scanned the crowd.
This was really, really, bad.
"William?" I tried again. I decided to cross the street and nearly got run over by one of their vehicles. It screeched to a stop and when I lowered my arms, I found the front of the metallic machine inches from my face.
"Git the fuck oudda da road!" shouted the pilot, shaking his fist in the air. I quickly scurried onto the opposite sidewalk and made my way down the street with the flow of the crowd. I kept my eyes peeled as I walked. It was difficult to see over everyone's shoulders. Diesillians were a good deal taller than Galgians as a rule, and it made it a nightmare for an average-sized guy like myself. Just when I was about to start asking around, something caught my ear.
Something I never expected to hear– music.
I stopped in my tracks and the public parted around me like a river around a boulder. I turned toward the sound and followed my ears to a large silver pavilion nestled between two tall buildings. It looked like an empty lot that had been designed for another tall building but instead served as some sort of inner-city courtyard where live entertainment performed.
I slowly approached as a woman stood in front of a mic stand singing while a band performed with shining metallic instruments behind her. She had black hair styled in a way I'd never seen hair styled. It was pulled up and around under a hat and shined the same as her red lipstick did. But what awed me the most was that she was
singing.
No danger; no combat; no sign of beasts being summoned forth. She sang beautifully, adding something to music that I had never in my life once considered because in Galgia, to sing was to slaughter. Music was a tool of war and forbidden entirely outside of such circumstances, for if one of us were even to hum, anything could come crawling out of the resulting portal.
But here she was, singing what I presumed were the words to a poem in perfect rhythm and harmony with the band that played behind her.
"You're my machine, my heart's ignition. The gears that keep my love in motion. You're the engine that never tires– the pistons set my soul on fire."
I was completely taken in. It was therefore no surprise to me that here in the crowd, I spotted Tovin watching her with equal admiration from the edge of the stage. I weaved through the crowd as politely as I was able and then stopped next to him. He glanced at me before quickly returning his eyes back to the stage. I didn't say anything to him; no words needed said so long as she was singing.
"You, my dear, a love machine, the one that keeps my bearings clean– I'm addicted to your engine's roar, your power's what I'm living for."
I wasn't a
hundred percent sure what she was talking about, but it was clearly a love song written for one lucky guy. When the song was finished, she ever so slightly lifted her ruby-red dress from the sides and took a bow. The crowd clapped, a few whistles coming from somewhere behind us.
"Thank you," she said softly into the mic. "It's important to remember that love conquers all," she said, passing her deep black eyes over us. "Hatred fades over time, but love lasts; it endures. This next song is about a long lost love and reconnection."
We stayed and listened to a couple more songs before she left the stage, and the band with her. She disappeared on promises of returning tomorrow for a second show. Of all the things thus far I had seen in the land of our enemy, something so sweet as non-weaponized music ranked among the most surprising and awe-inspiring.
As the crowd began to disperse back onto the main street, I turned to Tovin. "Hey, do me a favor and don't disappear like that. I didn't know where you were and we've
got to stick together."
"Can we come back here tomorrow?" he asked, completely ignoring what I'd said. He stared at me with hopeful eyes, a small smile on his face. It still felt strange of him to ask me permission for anything, but I couldn't deny that it was a pretty magical performance.
"Only if we live that long," I answered with a heaping helping of snark. "We need money so we can get off these streets tonight. Come on, we're losing daylight."
He looked past my shoulder and suddenly pointed. "What about that?"
I turned to see a bulletin board posted on the side of a building not far from us. On it were several posts, but one of them specifically read, "200 Octim Sign-On Bonus." The two of us walked up the board and looked over the job.
"There's a sign-on bonus," Tovin said as his eyes moved down the paper. "The Empress needs you. Galgian dogs sent monsters to run amok in our fair empire. Officials are spread thin amidst heightened tensions with Galgia's military. Find and kill monsters for bounties. Seek employment at the Hunters' Barracks at 443 Alloy Avenue on the north side of town. Look for the men in uniform."
"Monsters?" I asked. "There aren't any monsters in Galgia. None in all of Aurii if our textbooks are accurate."
"You want to at least check it out?" he asked.
"I think we'd be wasting our time," I said dismissively. "We hiked through a bunch of wilderness closer to the Galgian border and we didn't see anything all night."
He folded his arms. "Then let's get our sign-on bonus and
leave."
That was such a fantastic point that I pushed my palm against my forehead and visibly cringed. "Oof. Why am I so
dumb?" I whined.
"I don't think you're
dumb," Tovin said as he moved down the bulletin board to look at other flyers. "I think you're just honest to a fault. It never would have occurred to you to do something so underhanded."
I would never get used to compliments from Tovin. It was like watching a different person wear his body and speak with his voice. Had life at ENU really been such a drag on him?
"None of these other jobs are offering money upfront," he added, turning to face me. "Let's head to the north side of town and see if we can find Alloy Avenue."
x - - x - - x - - ★ - - x - - x - - x
The walk was long and difficult– not because it was too far, but because we had to pass so much delicious-smelling food along the way. I hadn't been sure before if Tovin was as hungry as I was, but the north side of Bronzegirder was quiet enough to hear both of our stomachs growling in concert with one another. The buildings were made of brick in the district we wandered through, and the walkways were closer to cobblestone like the kind we had back home. The roads were three times as wide, there were benches along the walkways, and they had planted trees caged in black iron gates at the trunks. The few people that strolled the sidewalks on Alloy Avenue were well-to-do, dressed in expensive-looking suits and wearing high hats with wide brims.
"I like this side of town better," Tovin said as we looked for building addresses. "Though I have to say, I'm surprised to see trees in the collossity."
"Goes a little against what we were taught doesn't it?" I asked.
"I don't recall being taught anything," he grumbled. "It's just another thing I somehow know."
I cast him a sympathetic glance and he didn't seem to like it. He scowled at me, "Don't you pity me."
"I'm not," I rolled my eyes. "I'd
never feel bad for
you Tovin, not in a thousand years."
"Just shut up," he snapped. "We're here."
He stopped in front of a brick building with an impressive stone staircase that had bronze handrails running up the length of them. At the top were two men in uniform just as the flyer had indicated. He was the first to start up the steps and I quickly followed behind him. As we passed them I took a good look at their uniforms. I could have sworn that I'd seen them somewhere before. We walked up to the glass doors and pulled them open.
A blast of warm air blew over us as we entered the building and it was a welcome reprieve from the cold. Inside was smaller than I had anticipated. I was expecting high ceilings, murals, metal artwork, and all kinds of stuff from how nice the outside looked. Instead, we found ourselves standing in a dirty lobby about the size of a headmaster's office. There were several rows of chairs dotted with people filling out forms on clipboards. At the back of the lobby was a little window with a man sitting on the other side. He was dark-skinned, had a shaved head, and bore a grisly pink scar across his cheek. He waved us forward when he noticed us.
"Let me do the talking," I whispered to Tovin, taking the lead in front of him as we made our way over; he didn't protest.
"Afternoon, gentlemen," he spoke into a microphone that relayed his voice to us through a little black device on the window. "Thinking about joining up?"
Before I could even speak, Tovin leaned onto the counter. "So when you say monsters," he adopted a skeptical look. "You mean like the ones that don't exist?"
The man behind the counter rolled his eyes. "Oh, great, another conspiracy theorist."
"What did you call me?" Tovin shot back.
"Ahhh, ha ha," I called out loudly, pulling Tovin back by his shoulder. "My brother is better at fighting than talking," I covered quickly. "Just talk to me from here on in."
He cast me a disinterested glance before handing us both clipboards with forms attached. "Whatever. Just read the whole thing and sign the liability waiver at the bottom. He's free to deny their existence while they're chewing his face off, but the
empire won't be responsible for it."
I took both of the clipboards and passed one to Tovin. The two of us sat down and began going through them– and immediately, we faced a problem. They wanted first and last names, home addresses, medical history, and something called landline numbers. Tovin and I exchanged glances; this wasn't going to work.
I stood up and slowly walked back up to the counter as I looked over the document. Every time I looked, it seemed more and more ridiculous. Blood type? Social security number? Insurance provider? I didn't know what any of this meant. It might as well have been in an entirely different language.
"Did you have a question?" asked the man behind the counter.
"Yeah, I don't have
most of this information," I said, setting the clipboard down on the counter. "Sorry, but we're gonna have to just go."
"Well, hang on now," he said, reaching under the little pass-through window and retrieving the clipboard. "I take it you boys are homeless then?" he asked.
"Uhh... Yeah," I answered tentatively. Did they really have such a homeless problem that he was able to jump to that conclusion so quickly? "We don't know how to answer these questions, so thanks anyways."
"I said hang on, dammit," he called through the mic before swiveling around in his chair and pulling some kind of lever underneath it that caused it to sink lower to the floor. He opened a cabinet and began rifling through it. I peered through the window at his chair– it was on some kind of ball axis that allowed him to spin in it freely. I felt like every couple of minutes I was seeing something I'd never seen before. He swiveled back around and lifted his chair back up before he handing me a new form. It was more like a strip of paper with three questions on it.
Shirt size, shoe size, and pant size.
There was a second slip of paper underneath it. I looked back up at the window attendant as Tovin appeared next to me. I handed him the slip of paper and we exchanged glances.
"The empire isn't being picky right now," spoke the man through the speaker. "You'll be assigned a number, a gun, and a uniform. You won't be eligible for emergency care, and you can't be assigned to a party. It'll be just the two of you. If you're still interested, we need all the help we can get."
I shrugged at Tovin, and he got to work filling out the information. I leaned on the counter and jotted down my uniform size before signing the waiver and handing everything back. He took both of the documents and then nodded toward the door on his right. "Come on back."
He reached under the table and did something that caused the door to make a whirring sound. It popped open on its own, and he thumbed us over to it. "Close it on your way in. Walk straight down the hall and through the third door on your left. Your hunter number is 27B and his is 28B."
We walked down the hallway and found the designated door already opened and with a sign on the inside that read, "Uniforms HERE" with an arrow pointing into the room. We were met by a portly woman with bouncy curls that hung down to her shoulders. She sat behind a desk absolutely surrounded by hanging uniforms, all kept in clear covering. She sized us up with a retractable ruler– the coolest ruler I had
ever seen. After she took our measurements, she began sifting through uniforms.
"Why did they ask us for our sizes if they were going to measure us?" Tovin grumbled.
"I don't know," I whispered. "Just be quiet."
"Don't tell me to be quiet," he shot back, elbowing me in the ribs.
She turned around holding two suits by the hangers, one in each hand. "Your uniforms will come out of your first bounty collected," she announced. "No money needed upfront. Change into them and make sure they fit." We took them from her and she breezed past us. "Holler out here when you're changed." She closed the door behind her.
We turned away from one another and began getting dressed. I pulled back the crinkly clear material and looked down at the uniform. Now that I was seeing it closer, it was actually an extremely dark shade of blue, rather than black as I had thought prior. I looked down at the hat and held it in my hands. I had seen it before. Then, all at once, it came rushing back to me.
These were the uniforms of the men that had come to the mine. They had come carrying guns to inspect the worksite after what had happened to Hammer. Skully must have thought a monster had gotten to him based on the state of his body. I stared down at the uniform in disbelief. Could monsters really be running around in Diesel territory?
"You better not be looking over here," Tovin warned.
They had mistaken what Tovin had done for a monster attack. Skully's "fonekall" wasn't a pilgrimage. It was some form of long-distance communication. She reached out to the capital to request aid from someone, and they sent these guys. I began to wonder if I was making a mistake. If we could be dispatched like that, then we could feasibly be sent back to the camp.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. We were only in it for the sign-on bonus. Once we had that in our hands, we'd be outta here. We could even jump to the next town. They knew nothing about us other than our clothing size. We could be dust in the wind by tomorrow morning.
I shoved those thoughts to the back of my mind and quickly got dressed. The uniform fit perfectly, it was comfortable, and best of all had been designed with a high collar. It covered our neck markings perfectly. I turned to see Tovin with the hat on already. He looked like a classic Diesel villain from a comic book I had read as a kid.
"It fits nice," he said, testing the range of motion he had in his arms. "I think this will work."
"Yeah," I nodded. "Let's get our money and get the hell out."
"Speaking my language," he smirked.
He moved for the door and leaned out, calling for the attendant. I looked at myself in the full-body mirror and did a quick turnaround. I had to admit, I looked pretty darn stylish. The white gloves, belt, and hat looked pretty good against the dark blue and gold buttons.
The woman returned and smiled at both of us, her curls bouncing as she tossed her gaze cartoonishly left and right between us. "You two look good!"
"Thanks," I smiled back. "When do we get our sign-on bonus?"
"Oh, don't worry about that just yet," she said, moving back to her desk. "Do you boys know how to shoot?" she asked as she sat down.
"Shoot?" Tovin asked.
"A gun," she clarified, her smile fading. "Have either of you shot a gun?"
"No, ma'am," I answered. "Our parents didn't let us near them growing up."
"That's no problem," she said, lifting her hands. "We're happy to teach you the basics. You'll just exit the room and go left down to the very end of the hallway. I'll buzz you through the double doors at the end, and Old Mitchell will take you from there."
Tovin audibly groaned, and I took him by the arm, leading him out of the room. We walked down the hallway as he bellyached about what a waste of time it was. It was unlike him to turn his nose up at the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of a new weapon. In fact, he'd been acting weirdly childish lately. I didn't like it. It beat dealing with Tovin-Classic, but it was still a hassle. As we neared the end of the hallway, we began hearing the sound of guns being fired one by one.
The doors buckled and hummed the same as the first door had, and we pushed them open. We passed into a large room with Diesillians shooting at targets a good distance away. This was why the building was so large and the lobby was so small. The brick walls were covered in informational and safety posters, as well as what appeared to be schematics for the weapons themselves.
I looked across the large room to see a man striding toward us. He was wearing shiny black boots that were laced tightly to his calves. His pants and jacket were hunter green, and he bore perhaps the silliest mustache I'd ever seen; It was long and curled at the tips. I had to be careful not to snicker– his eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses, and I couldn't tell if he was watching me.
"New recruits?" he called out to us from entirely too far away.
"Yes sir," I called back. "My brother and I just signed up."
"Brothers!" he exclaimed. "I love it, dammit!" He stopped in front of us. He was chewing on something and was being as obnoxious as he possibly could about it. He was wearing perhaps the stupidest hat I had seen of the Diesel yet. It had no visible brim and was high on one side while sloping down toward the other. For the life of me, I couldn't discern the purpose of it.
"You boys know how to shoot?" he asked.
"No sir," I shook my head. "We're new at this."
"Good," he smiled widely. "That means you haven't formed any bad habits yet. I love newbies," he said before waving for us to follow him. "Come on, let's get you your rifles. I'm Mitch, but folks around here call me Old Mitchell."
"James," I said as I followed after him. "This is my brother William." It was difficult to talk over the noise of the weapons. I occasionally jumped when someone shot their gun nearby– a reflex I couldn't wait to be rid of. He led us to a small room; so small that it might as well have been a glorified safe. He disappeared inside and came back out holding two guns. The same long metal tubes Tovin and I had been attacked with at O'Malley's inn.
We each took one and promptly inspected it. Suddenly, Old Mitchell stepped forward and grabbed both of our guns by the barrel, lifting them so they were pointed at the ceiling.
"You boys ever even
held one of these?" he barked. "Careful where you aim.
Never point one of these at anything or anyone that you're not prepared to destroy."
"They sweep you, Mitch?" asked a man as he passed behind us.
"Pointed 'em right at me," he called back with a laugh. "We'll get 'em straightened out, don't you worry about that." He looked at us both, chewing aggressively. "Now I'm gonna let these rifles go. You keep 'em pointed up, you understand?"
"Yes, sir," I answered.
"Sure," Tovin said in a disinterested tone.
He let go of our rifles and we kept them pointed at the ceiling as we were told. I looked up and down the length of the tube before turning it over and inspecting the area under the barrel. It was split underneath with what looked like some kind of spring running along the length of the tube.
"They're not loaded," Mitch said, waving for us to follow him to the other side of the room. "But you will always treat them like they are. I'm going to show you how to load them over here. Set them down on the desk, I'm gonna stand between the two of you so I can watch you both."
I set my gun down in front of me and looked to my right. There was a box of what I presumed to be bullets. I expected them to be round pellet-like projectiles, but they were tubular with roughly textured heads on them.
"Turn your weapon over. You'll notice you can see a spring inside the bottom of the barrel. Close to the other end of your gun, you'll find a little round tab there. Take that tab and push it with your thumb all the way up toward the tip of the barrel. You'll then pop it out to the side there."
I did as he asked, and sure enough, the barrel popped out to the left at the tip of the weapon. I glanced over at Tovin who was struggling with the spring. Old Mitchell moved over and helped him with it. "Sometimes they get stuck," he muttered as he got Tovin to the same step I was at.
"Now," he shouted. "Take your ammunition right there in the box next to you, and begin placing the rounds into the underside of the barrel, flat side first. Then, you'll load more bullets into the gun overlapping one another. Be careful not to let the rounds collide with one another too heavily, or you could have a little accident."
I loaded the bullets carefully one after another until the barrel was about full. He checked on Tovin's rifle, and then inspected mine.
"Good. Now realign the barrel, there and come with me to the bay," he said, starting toward the practice range. I carefully lifted the weapon and rested it against my shoulder, turning with Tovin to follow him. When we stopped at the range, he motioned for Tovin first. "Come on, Will, we're gonna start with you."
"Pass," he said nonchalantly.
Old Mitchell blinked twice. "What?"
"I want to see Gill do it first," he said, stepping out of my way.
"It's a nickname," I said quickly, stepping up to the range. "Anyways, I'll go first, I don't mind, what do I do here?"
Mitch remained silent for a couple of seconds before clapping his hands once. "Okay! Well, go ahead and pull the hammer back."
I looked down at the weapon and then back up at him. Sensing my confusion, he carefully reached forward and pulled back a little tiny lever on the top of the rifle until it clicked. "That's called pulling the hammer back," he said. "Will, you watching this?"
He didn't wait for a response. "Next thing you're gonna do is pull that lever out underneath the gun. That's going to load the weapon with a fresh cartridge. You're gonna do that between every shot, now. Lift it up against your shoulder like this; get it snug in there." He pulled it against my shoulder. "Look down the iron sight there at the tip of the rifle and line it up against your target. Your weapon is primed and ready to fire. You're good for fifteen shots before you've got to reload. You can always flip it over to see how many bullets are left. Go ahead and aim carefully, and try and hit that target paper down there."
At the end of the range, there was a piece of paper with a silhouette of a human head, shoulders, and torso. I closed one eye for better aim and held the gun tightly as I lined up my shot.
"Don't
pull the trigger," Mitch advised in my left ear. "Squeeze it. Squeeze the trigger until it doesn't move easily anymore. Then when you're sure about your aim, squeeze with just that little bit of extra strength you need."
I did as he said, and felt what he was referring to. With my target in sight, my hand steady, and my aim as true as I could hope for, I fired the weapon. The shot rang out right in my ear, but interestingly enough, it wasn't so bad when I was the one firing. I was ready for it, and expecting it.
"Holy smokes!" exclaimed Mitch. "You put one right between the eyes!"
"Beginners's luck," said a man from behind me. "I did the same thing first time I shot, and never did it again."
"Let's prove him wrong, James," Old Mitchell laughed. "Now use that lever under the gun to eject the casing and load a fresh bullet."
I pulled the lever and the shiny little bullet casing popped out the top and flew over my shoulder. It was a really satisfying feeling.
"Do I pull the hammer again? I asked.
"Nope, it'll pop back down. You'll only pull that hammer back the first time. Go ahead and fire again, only this time, aim for the neck."
"Alright," I said, closing my eye and tightening my focus. I squeezed the trigger just as I had the first time and shot a hole straight through the center of the target's neck. I lifted my head and smiled. "I hit it!"
"No way," said the man behind me. "Ain't never shot before, my ass. He's taking you for a ride, Mitch."
"You're sure you're new at this, son?" Old Mitchell asked, one eye half shut. "That's really impressive, kid. Seriously, if this is your first time holding a rifle, you might be cut out for the military. Had a staff sergeant with worse aim than you."
"Alright, alright," Tovin pushed me aside. "My turn. Let me show you something you'll never forget."
The two of us took turns shooting for hours. We hadn't even noticed the time going by. For once, it seemed Tovin had found something he wasn't naturally amazing at, and it was infuriating him to no end.
Conversely, I found something I was really,
really good at. I hit my target almost every time, and to be honest, I couldn't figure out what was so difficult about it. A crowd had gathered to watch me shoot. I got really swift with the lever, and could shoot out both of a target's eyes, and put one in its forehead in a matter of seconds.
Tovin wasn't a bad shot, but I knew how he felt. If he wasn't first, he was last as far as he was concerned, and at one point he about threw his rifle. Old Mitchell had to talk to him about how some things come naturally to others, and how he shouldn't be discouraged from coming to the range and practicing.
It was rich hearing Tovin get that talk of all people. The natural genius that outshined everyone, struggling with something for the very first time. I almost couldn't believe I was better than him at something, and of course, it just
had to be the thing that we'd never do again once we found our friends and went back home.
Our friends.
We were wasting time here. "Hey, Mitchel," I turned toward him. "When do we get our sign-on bonus? It was supposed to be something like 200 octims."
"You get your sign-on bonus when you bring back your first bounty," he responded quickly.
"What?" Tovin shouted. "That's not fair! We signed on, now where's our money?"
I was equally upset. We were lied to. But it made sense that they couldn't just hand us uniforms, cash, and a gun, and let us go. They wanted to make sure we at least killed a monster.
"It's fine," I said with a sigh. "Where can we find bounties?"
"It's not fine," Tovin protested.
I yanked him by the collar of his shirt and looked him in the eyes. "It's fine," I said slowly and firmly. "We'll run out, bag a monster, and be back before dark."
He held eye contact with me for several seconds before shrugging me off of him and walking away. He stormed across the bay and left through the double doors at the other end of the room.
"My brother was the same way," said Mitch. "Hard-headed. Stubborn as a mule. Loyal as anyone you'd ever meet though."
He had no idea. Tovin wasn't just difficult, but he was turning into a walking liability. I didn't know how much longer I could take him acting like this. Suddenly, Mitch extended his arm, pointing to a door adjacent to where he'd gotten our guns from.
"Bounty board is in there. Come on, I'll show you."
It was a medium-sized room with several corkboards wall to wall filled with bounties. Every monster was named and almost all of them were sketched to a professional degree. You could find how much money the monster was going for, which hunters it had killed, where it was last seen, as well as whether or not there were hunters currently after it.
They had a system where you would notate which monster you were going after, and if you didn't return, they'd add your name under the list of hunters that died searching for it. There were so many monsters I couldn't believe it, and according to Old Mitchell, these were only the monsters within a five-mile radius of Bronzegirder.
I learned the process of choosing a bounty and chose a smaller monster with no names under its fatality list. Mitch agreed it was a good monster for beginners, and offered a few pointers for tracking it. I submitted the bounty request and got it approved before leaving the bay and heading down the hall in search of Tovin. I entered the lobby and didn't see him. I left the building and found him at the top of the steps staring out into the street where a couple of vehicles were hauling something massive together under a tarp.
Several uniformed hunters were walking slowly next to the vehicles. Their uniforms were tattered and bloodstained, and a few of them walked with a limp. We watched as the exhausted men passed the building on their way down the road. Two of them were sobbing silently, but we could tell by their exposed teeth and wrinkled expressions that they'd lost someone.
From beneath the tarp, a scaly limb fell off the side of the vehicle and dangled lifelessly. It was a reptilian-looking arm with an open wound, and the shredded remnants of a uniform hanging from its claws.
"Gill," Tovin said quietly. "Is that..."
"Yeah," I answered.
"That's definitely a monster."

2023.03.21 18:34 GaySoyBoyFucker Visions from Beyond the Veil
Many, many years ago I had a profound experience with this medicine. It was a mild dose, so I didn’t lose touch with reality and haven’t had any real visual hallucinations, but rather I experienced something like “downloading of wisdom” or “gaining memories” from somewhere else. I just saw something in my mind through memories that suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
I saw an extremely huge area, with large mountains that all looked the same. The mountains where shaped like ice cream cones, wide at the bottom and getting more narrow to the top. There was no sun and the light was gloomy, but you could still see everything. Think of the first Matrix movie, when Neo awoke in his capsule and looked over the huge human farming facility with the clouded sky - it kinda looked like this, just without any monsters and with a calm and serene atmosphere.
Each mountain had a trail that started at the bottom and slowly meandered around the mountain towards the summit. On the trails there where openings carved into the side of the mountains that contained mirrors. Humanoid figures without faces (I was one of them) slowly walked these trails up the mountain and regularly stopped at these mirrors and looked through them. By looking through a mirror they were born into this material world and experienced the life of a human. Stopping to look into a mirror meant death in the material world but had no effect on the other side, it just meant the experience from this mirror was over and you could just walk a bit and then look into the next one on the path.
At this point I was 100% convinced, without any doubts in my mind, that if I really really wanted to, then I could just step back from my mirror right now and immediately leave this life behind. It would mean my death of course, but I could just choose to start a new life by looking into another mirror. It gave me an incredible sense of calmness at this moment, because I knew no matter how much worse my life might get, I would always have the option to just move on to the next one by sheer willpower.
Obviously, I chose not to do that, since I’m still here :), but the experience removed all fears and uncertainties I had about death up to this point. I still look back to this vision many years later and hope it to be the truth.

2023.03.21 18:29 mr_trashbear Need Help Choosing: GPS Enabled, Trail Map Integration, Rugged Build, Slight Budget
Hello everyone!
So. I recently upgraded my phone, and have been jealous of my partner's Apple Watch. I'm not an apple guy, however. On a whim, I bought a refurbished Galaxy Watch (Model SM-R800). I'm going to return it. While I like the rotating bezel, UI, understated look, and screen clarity, it simply doesn't do what I want it to reliably. The Alti-Barometer straight up doesn't work. Integration with Strava hasn't worked correctly, since I think I'm accidentally pausing my ride by tapping the buttons with my hand/wrist while using bike handlebars.
My buddy is willing to sell me his old Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire for $175. I've been using it for a few days. While it is clearly more accurate and super rugged, and the battery life is awesome, I really dislike the UI and feel like the screen resolution/display quality are pretty poor for a product as nice as this. I was interested in it because of integration with the Trailforks app, but the integration isn't as smooth as I'd like. I do have access to a ~35% discount on all Garmin and Sunnto products. However, even with that discount, they are quite pricey pieces and I don't think I really need the quality of a Fenix 6 or 7, or an Epix. The Forerunner seems nice, but I'm not a fan of the plastic construction.
So, I've narrowed it down to a few options, and I'd love to get some input from folks here who have tried out some of these models.
Use Case:
- Everyday use. Basic metrics like steps, HR, etc. Ability to control Spotify. Ability to see basic notifications like text messages and my Google Calendar, etc. Ideally it also has a nice looking display with good clarity and brightness. Ideally a nice, subtle form factor and not too ostentatious.
- Sport Use: I'm a pretty active and avid outdoors-person. My primary sports are cycling (both mountain and road), and watersports (whitewater rafting, SUP, swimming, fly fishing), and backcountry skiing. I also hunt. This means that having good GPS tracking is needed. Ideally, I would be able to have a downloaded topo map with trails on the watch, or be able to import KML or GPX files. I plan routes using a variety of software. For MTB rides in new trail systems, I'd still use my phone for larger scale navigation, but it would be nice to be able to quickly glance at my watch to determine which way I'd prefer to go at a junction, or tell friends which way would be best without pulling my phone out of a pack.
- Must be rugged. I'm hard on things, and weather it's swimming laps at the pool or hitting rocks underwater while swimming in a river, grabbing a fish, dinging it on hard surfaces, the watch needs to be able to survive.
So, my thoughts are:
- Amazfit T-Rex. Seems like a great value that would do everything I need. I've read some reviews of this and the Falcon, and it seems like the biometric data isn't perfect, but I'm not super concerned about my HR being perfectly accurate. The rest of the features seem to tic the boxes. I'm skeptical about the UI and app availability. Really wonder if there would be a decent offline map app that would suit my needs. Also wonder about the ergonomics for cycling.
- Keep my buddy's Fenix 5X Sapphire. It tics all the spec boxes, but the display just looks pretty mediocre and I feel like I'd end up having buyers remorse.
- Amazfit Falcon. Same as the T-Rex, but with more subtle branding and aesthetic. Unfortunately it's also around the same price as what I can get a Garmin Fenix 6 for.
- Garmin Fenix 6. I know it will be solid for the sport use, but I worry that the UI and screen resolution/display quality will be less crisp than I'd prefer.
- Samsung Watch 5 Pro. I'd likely need to add a rugged case, but I know the screen/UI/app store are all solid. I just wonder about the GPS/AltimeteBarometer reliablity, considering my current, older Samsung totally fails in that regard.
Very open to suggestions if there's something I missed. Thank you for your time!
