2023.01.19 05:00 bobeth06 Advice needed: Scattering Mom's Ashes and Brother-in-Law

I (33m) am the youngest of 4 and our mom died from cancer in early 2020 after a decade plus with it. Her funeral wishes were to be cremated, have a party/celebration of life, and then scatter her ashes at the beach or at sea. Due to COVID we didn't feel safe throwing celebration of life until late 2021 after widespread vaccination availability etc. We still need to scatter her ashes.
Myself, 2 siblings, and Dad live in the same city/within 1 hour drive time. Another sister lives in D.C. metro with my Brother-in-Law (BiL) and elementary school aged nephew. We have had difficulty scheduling an occasion for us to all do the scattering and I feel most of it is due to my BiL.
My sister and BiL live in D.C. metro primarily for his career. We grew up in upper South/Midwest and BiL is from Philly suburbs and I think that is some source of disconnect. I feel like we go out of our way to accommodate BiL when he, my sister, and nephew visit or when we go to visit them. Generally the agenda seems driven by him when they visit or, in one example I wasn't present for, we visited them and rather than have opportunity to try cuisine in larger metro area he insisted on getting sandwiches from Wawa.
An issue with making arrangements has been that BiL doesn't like driving long distances/seems to want to dictate where we do the scattering. We had a plan in 2022 to scatter my mom's ashes fall through because BiL schedule, nephew's school schedule, lack of direct flight.
We are working on plans for this summer and BiL wants to do the scattering somewhere in Florida and then have opportunity for him, my sister, and my nephew to do other things. I prefer, and my family has put forth, scattering my mom's ashes around Gulf Shores in coastal Alabama. We aren't a terribly sentimental bunch but my family did live in that area for about a decade when we were growing up and I think it would be nice to scatter ashes somewhere where we had some connection to.
The majority of us would likely drive ~10 hours which isn't the worse/we did it regularly as kids to visit grandparents and such. There isn't a super direct flight; best I can find is Baltimore to Destin but would still be 1 hour to departure airport, 2 hours from Destin to Gulf Shores.
It seems to be that I am feel the most strongly about this. I've been told our dad doesn't want to insist if it endangers our sister being able to attend. I'm not worried about an abusive relationship: my sister is pretty head-strong and it sometimes makes me wonder if she uses the excuse of accommodating my BiL/nephew. The advice I'm seeking is whether I should just go with the flow, whether to advocate for Gulf Shores over random place in Florida, or, like I somewhat feel, express that this is a decision that my BiL should not weigh in on and he should suck it up and drive for more than 2 hours. There is nothing like dealing with a death to really bring out the underlying tensions and dynamics.

2023.01.14 09:25 Decent-Divide-90 35 [M4F] Virginia/US-EST Looking to be the Sam Neil in our 'Possession' (1981) relationship

These things are always such a complicated matter to write. In my mind I write all manner of things I hope can appeal to someone else, but generally it comes down to being able to feel comfortable around each other without needing to put several layers of masks on like we're a one person theatre troupe, and generally the only way we get to that point is even after all the introductions and show, we stay after the curtains have fallen and we head out back for smokes (I don't smoke in reality though). Yet it's hard to make those connections in real life, at least for me, since I don't really do social outings to bars, parties, or interact with anyone with any regularity except for the older woman who works the self check out lane at my local grocery store. She thinks it's acceptable to confide me about the death of her husband or when a UTI has been bothering her.
My usual social interactions come from a small handful of friends I've known since my teens playing games, and arguing about Star Wars. Now a days most of them are in careers, married, and such, but we still gather on discord almost daily and still talk about mindless nonsense from gaming, to work drama, to listening to them talk about whose twitter can get banned the fastest in this new Elon dystopia. That being said I'm also back in college at 35 to become a teacher, after years of jumping from jobs such as a grocery store, bakery aide, dog daycare wrangler, and delivery jobs. So I wouldn't bet on me being full of wealth, but at same time I'd never ask others for money or to carry my burdens. I'll be starting my 3rd semester here soon.
On my down times, I go out driving at ungodly hours looking to fulfill those possum cravings for a 7-Eleven or WaWa's Hotdog and a slushie with enough sugar to send most normal people into diabetic comas. I cried at the end of the show Lucifer, MASH is a comfort show to me, and I have more hours than I can count in a few video games. I buy more books than I'm capable of reading, and enjoy movies that often tanked in the box offices thinking there's some deeper meaning to them than there probably is. I'm just a corny guy, but it's okay.
Anyhow, I guess for some details about me aside from being 35. I am Hispanic, I have a mishmash of genetics going on in me, some Native and Jewish (I don't really have a connection to that side of my family) co-mingling, just a Republicans minority nightmare. That being said I'm fairly left leaning on my political scale. I don't really see myself having kids in the future. Religion-wise I'm agnostic, I understand and appreciate others beliefs in something higher than themselves, granted it's not used to abuse others. I'm a bit of a freak, and I don't mean in a John Merrick kinda way. I have the classic "dad bod." I'm not a perfect person, but I am a human being, and you should be one too, though I accept lizard people from time to time.

2023.01.01 17:43 gana04 MAPPING THE TOP 10 GOATS BEST RUNS AT SLAMS AND MASTERS. PART 1: CLAY

MAPPING THE TOP 10 GOATS BEST RUNS AT SLAMS AND MASTERS. PART 1: CLAY
Recently I did a top 10 Open Era players by surface, where I considered slams, masters, win % and record vs top players. However this last point was particularly contentious, not many agreed what constituted a tough or weak field. I went with top 10 players but they can often be poor at one particular surface, whereas a player in the top 50 can be very strong on clay or grass for instance. So I focused on surface ELO which is better but is too sensitive to long term results over current form. This time I tried something different.
I mapped every final and semifinal run for slams and every final for masters, focusing on their QF+ matches, I only included 4R matches when it was a relevant enough opponent. I scored those runs based on the toughest opponent they beat by recent form, that is results from slam and masters up to 2 years pre and post their meeting, with more weight to results from same season, as well as by how dominant the win was (game win %). I scratched the names of the opponent to reduce bias and focus on their form. I limited it to players with over 70% win at both slams and masters. The results go from All Time, Very Strong, Strong, Average, Weak (which at best count as reaching a final) and Very Weak (which shouldn't even be counted). All this would be relative to each other runs. Examples:
https://preview.redd.it/q706pdfnkg9a1.jpg?width=1902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a79ed4d65b2ccdb04d21ccfc8aa9d5a0fe9e2bf3
For this excercise I omitted the USO because it was on har-tru, which as Mr_Saxobeat94 pointed out to me, it's almost like a separate surface. It also only ran for 3 years. The end result is synthesized in this chart and graphic in which I include the adjusted slams and masters once accounting for relative difficulty:
https://preview.redd.it/r8jzdpz6ng9a1.jpg?width=1052&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5df39098ddce6918d3a90ca31d6a39e110cd7398
Top = RG. Bottom = Masters. Dark gray = final worthy, Light gray = too weak.
1. NADAL: Not much to say, he's so ridiculous. He goes from 14 RG and 26 masters to a measly 12 RG and 15 masters, pathetic. His only slam too weak to count is his revenge vs Soderling in 2010 (Mezler in SF and Almagro in QF), whose sole achievements on clay were those 2 finals (mono only affected his results on clay from 2012 onwards). Other than that his least impressive runs are the ones where he didn't meet Djokovic.
https://preview.redd.it/z10skmo1lg9a1.jpg?width=443&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c77d0ed51d99b6ab6b3e36ef8cb1f3ff93e3090a
2. BORG: His master count stays intact but 2 of his 6 RG now count as finals, the one where he beat Gerulaitis in 1980 and when he struggled vs a very young Lendl in 1981. Just by looking at the combined graph you'd be tempted to put Djokovic ahead or at least on the same tier, but it should be notice that Djokovic achieved an equal 4 (adjusted) slams and 2 finals on more than twice the tournaments, hence Borg's 96.1% at RG, more than 12% higher than Novak's. His field wasn't as tough as Novak's but mostly because like Nadal he didn't have to face himself.
https://preview.redd.it/wxlcy4i7lg9a1.jpg?width=386&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9058fb72eac4b98fbc7122fa1e142a032a5301a
3. DJOKOVIC: He gets vindicated the most by this system, since his 2 RG and 4 finals end up as 4 RG and 2 finals. Curiously, his most impressive run, an all timer, was neither of his title runs but his 2015 final, where he beat prime Nadal (and Murray). His 2012 run where he beat Federer also counts as at least an average title. He also holds 5 all time runs at the master level, basically every time he beat Nadal.
https://preview.redd.it/xr6037svlg9a1.jpg?width=425&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e432b9639fa59fdfc989a53f6166c41b5ce31fc5
4. LENDL: Not much changes for Lendl at RG, but all 6 of his master titles are weak, only 3 counting as finals. Still, no one else won more than 2 adjusted RG and one of his is tougher than everybody else's.
https://preview.redd.it/mhi566rwlg9a1.jpg?width=384&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7731d5d91910ea3d519fc0a1e117dd1eefdcab2f
5. FEDERER: I honestly thought this system would be a bit harsh on him and it was, on the slam level. It's often said that making 4 straight finals make him an all time great, but all 4, including his title run, were plain weak. That doesn't happen by coincidence, Federer's career on clay is one of two halfs, the first one very weak outside of Nadal, but the latter super tough with the emergence of great clay players like Djokovic, Ferrer, Wawrinka, Murray, Thiem, etc. His one slam is deservedly due to beating Novak in 2011. However, the reason he gets ahead of Wilander is because of his body of work on the master level, where he earns 5 masters, including 3 all time ones (2 over peak Nadal, 1 over peak Djokovic). Wilander might have won an extra slightly tougher slam but 0 masters and no win on either level anywhere near as impressive as Federer's.
https://preview.redd.it/2xzje9ixlg9a1.jpg?width=520&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3466be18baadc6a3c0264c0ea736a7bf3660172d
6. WILANDER: Despite a minor demotion he still earns 2 slams and 2 finals, clearly ahead of the rest of the pack. His 2 wis vs Lendl stick but his titles won vs Laconte and a past his prime Vilas don't.
https://preview.redd.it/eqaeqv4ylg9a1.jpg?width=483&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad9feee322b705f88e733de698c6cd286cfe1419
7. KUERTEN: His 3 slams become just 1 strong one (beating prime Ferrero). His era wasn't the strongest with very good but no all time great clay players. In those 2 other runs he beat some of those very good players but outside of their primes.
https://preview.redd.it/2rislztylg9a1.jpg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=575f3c260dace7829673754a84b193724b9a5c5e
8. VILAS: He loses the most with this system and not just because of omitting USO, he would still only have 1 average slam besides the 2 adjusted finals if we included it. His era was much tougher than Kuerten but he also didn't beat the best ones in their prime. Like Kuerten he beat the good but not the greatest. He did earn 2 masters and that's enough to earn this spot.
https://preview.redd.it/5vbq6pdzlg9a1.jpg?width=384&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a418fb78c9d27fad6dc8cf8a48c162478da2def
9. LAVER: He's very tough to judge with only 3 RG played and a handful of masters but he still earns a RG final and a master, to go with an impressive win% on both levels.
https://preview.redd.it/e9kmr822mg9a1.jpg?width=381&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cfd0d6597fd3253cf7c05c04837b17454869f0b
10. MUSTER: With USO gone, Muster takes Connor's spot. Like Laver he earns a RG final and a master title, both slightly weaker than Laver's, but still more than anyone else that meets the criteria.
https://preview.redd.it/sdx870o2mg9a1.jpg?width=382&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16f6ef02b8df363c51a351ee19dff4e574915502
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this analyisis, if you think I missed someone (with at least 70% win on masters and RG, sorry Wawa and Murray) let me know. Next I will do top 10 on grass, so stay tuned. Have a happy new year and lets hope for some great tennis this 2023!

2022.12.31 04:30 autotldr Barbara Walters, a First Among TV Newswomen, Is Dead at 93

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 31%. (I'm a bot)
"Having it all" was not part of the cultural lexicon when Ms. Walters began combining career and family.
She and her second husband, the theatrical producer Lee Guber, raised a daughter, Jacqueline, during her time at "Today." She was married three times in all, and between marriages she dated many prominent and powerful men, among them Senator John Warner of Virginia and the Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan.
Many a male colleague groused that Ms. Walters used her femininity and social connections to get ahead, but she had a drive that would almost certainly have propelled her to fame no matter what.
She was a perfectionist and a worrier who did her own research, wrote her own questions on index cards and was often her own best editor.
Ms. Walters boasted that CBS, desperate to compete, persuaded the two leaders to sit down together again with Cronkite.
One measure of her fame was her ubiquity as a target of parody on "Saturday Night Live." Gilda Radner was the first cast member to impersonate her, as Baba Wawa, in acknowledgment of the difficulty Ms. Walters had pronouncing her R's and L's. It was not just the way Ms. Walters spoke that Ms. Radner parodied.

2022.11.19 17:02 whereeveritmaytakeme Most annoying storyline ending

What's the most annoying storyline ending ot the series?
For me the ending of the andy storyline was the most unsatisfying one. He started as kind of cringy but okay colleague of Jim. Started in Scranton as good salesman. Then it went downhill. I still liked him before the workshop to build on his self-esteem. Then the storyline just went berserk. The boattrip was laughable. The break-up with Erin was also not good - the two worked as a couple, at least for me. Then the whole "starting an actor career" and the "baby wawa" was also meaningless.
The other character which feels underdeveloped is Erin. In my humble opinion, she barely changes at all. The thing with her being an orphan is mentioned during some office meetings and side-remarks of her and then ends in the Finale with meeting her parents. Yay?

COMMENTARY:
recently, I received a promotion and my salary increased by 16%. it has helped immensely with my current lifestyle changes as I’m preparing to move and am saving to pay off the remainder of my student loans post-forgiveness. the spending here is pretty reflective of a bit of lifestyle creep as well as my finally no longer saving as aggressively as I have been over the past year. my personal motto when I’m on a trip is to spend to my heart’s content, but since this trip was kinda last minute, I didn’t have nearly enough to cover my spending. in order to pay back my credit card without pulling from my savings, I’ll use 'my chase plans' on the hotel, the le labo, and the cbd shop payments.
I’ve been feeling stressed and burnt out lately, and this trip came together suddenly, as a coworker was selling their ticket. the festival was within driving distance to me, so I could take a weekend without too much expense. because I am no longer in strict savings mode, I’ve been indulging myself more frequently.
the hotel was quite expensive, due to my current tastes and the distance from the location. I wanted to be within walking distance so that I wouldn’t have to worry about driving during a busy event. it was very nice, came with two TVs and a stocked kitchen. the trip was going to be pretty cheap technically until Sunday when I decided to indulge myself. I have a lot of conflicting feelings about consumption, but I try to be mindful and intentional when shopping.

🌞 end the day enjoying the sun and decide to drive back, saddened that i can’t vacation every month or stay here longer. until next time.
⛽️Gas for trip home: $22. listen to the same playlist along with the tunes of some of the festival performers.

etc

🏛 $15 day parking at museum
🏨 $35 overnight parking at hotel
🛣 about $20 for tolls
🐶 $36.5x3 for dog boarding = $109.5 total

TOTAL: 💸 $1883 (+$1056 more than I saved)

REFLECTION: I will need to move around my budget that I tend to keep very strict for my savings goals. this will delay my savings by a few months which I try to plan in advance. It's a little stressful, but I think the trip was helpful for my mood. It was my first "solo trip"!! I wanted to test the waters by traveling alone, and it was so good, I cannot wait to do it again.
EDIT: major formatting issues!!

2022.10.12 20:21 Professional_March54 My Raging NDad's Gone Fully Mental

This is *sort of* a reply to that Nparents Cathcphrase thing, so I wouldn't violate Rule 3. Copying and pasting my reply, before I realized I needed to make this post.
"You're such an ungrateful bastard! I'm going to get rich and famous without (Mind you he's nearing 60) you, and you'll bet no-fucking-thing. Do you hear me? I will PUBLICALLY cut you off and destroy your reputation! You will have nothing, and I'll finally be happy! I'll buy up your job and have you unemployable, just you wait and see. You should have supported me! You'll rue the day you crossed me!"
Tldr: My father has aspirations beyond his financial means, gets abusive when faced with the facts, and I might just gather enough credits for a finance degree, without going to school, just by being the sensible one
He's wanted to buy/ build the coffee shop for about as long as I can remember. He was a godawful dicator-esque manager at a cafe before I came along and someone had to get an actual career. See, he gave up a rising career in media in the wings of Hollywood/LA before giving it all away to move to bumfuck, Carolinas for my Mom. Where we live nothing's open past 10, cept for about 4 months in the summer and even then only a handful of places are actually 24 hours. Even before Covid, if you wanted anything after 10, it had better be at 7/11 or it waited till morning. He wants to develop a 24 hour cafe/ diner. Every few months, he'll drag some poor soul out to traipse around a buisness that's up for sale, and chatter about interior decorating while we peer in the windows, and remind ourselves to get better at our excuses. It's a wonderful idea, on paper, but unless he plans on paying like $20 for third shift, he's going to have a really hard time keeping open unless he wants to become a vampire. Plus, he really hates our entire police force and they know it, so that's a nonstarter because they'd be his only patrons after midnight. Bet.
Then I got a job at a third party delivery service, like Doordash but not a chain. He loved the idea, and wanted me to introduce him to my boss (who doesn't even live in this time zone) so he could but it out from under him. See, when my Grandma died she left behind about $8K and he decided to invest it. That's about all he has. He might be able to make it like $10K, but that's it.
I made up a million excuses, because the idea put an awful taste in my mouth. Mostly because he plainly stated it would be a loan, and he'd expect me to repay him from my earnings while running the buisiness all on my own. I am a college dropout with school-related anxiety, this just spells disaster, and I had the sense to see that. So when I saw a chance, I burned that bridge and jumped ship.
And now he wants to buy a franchise to the pizza buisiness where I presently work. He thinks my boss does an awful job runing the store we have now. Because we're not open as late as others in the chain in bigger cities with a larger potential hiring poole. Nor do we have stores to service portions of town that are only justifiable busy four months out of the year. Explaining to him that the chain doesn't do part time stores went in one ear and out the other. Nor does he acknowledge that there did used to be another store, but it was closed because it was hemoragging labor and supplies 6 months out of 12. Also, I've done my research, because someone had to be the head of reason and the buy in alone is $15K. And it's usually only for people who've worked for the chain for 10 years. I just passed 9 months.
So he decided to take the controversial news of a Wawa going in where we already have three fucking gas stations at an intersection, and announce his intentions to build two or three Sheetz at opposite ends of town. The buy in for one, I found out, was a MINIMUM of $50K, but actually it's probably $200K, and by that they mean you need a liquid captiol of $1.2 MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS to even be considered. Oh, and Sheetz isn't actually selling franchises at the moment. He kicked me out of the car at an abandoned gas station when I read that to him, just last month.
I would leave, but he charges more in rent then I can afford. So I daydream about trailer parks in the midwest, and wait for the Recssion to crash so I can flee and go NC.

2022.10.10 23:15 Kuthillick How to get started in Online Customer Service?

Hey all,
I am a 28 year old man who has not had a job in a little over three years. I have an Associate's Degree in English. I am interested in getting started in the customer service industry, especially with computer or video game companies. I have no idea how to get started for one of these jobs or what skills I should work on developing in preparation of getting a job in this area.
All of my previous jobs have been part-time and related to customer service. My work history includes:
In the 3 years since I left Wawa my health as deteriorated and I have moved twice along with COVID going on.
A little more about the troubles I am concerned about finding a job that works for me.
I am a type I diabetic and physically disabled. I am reliant on a cane or walker to get around or a wheelchair for longer distances. I need at least one joint replaced in my leg. This is the issue that forced me out of Wawa. As a result fo the Type I diabetes, I am also completely blind in my right eye. The combination of the arthritis and partial blindness does not allow me to drive at the moment, though I did have my license before I lost eyesight. I am currently on disability.
Right now I spend most of my time on the computer, resting as needed for my eyes to rest. I am currently working on creating content and learning things such as video editing, though the process is taking awhile. I very much enjoy and feel like I am strong at helping people with things and explaining or teaching things I am knowledgeable about. The combination of teach, explaining, and working with people, along with my previous experience in customer service, is what is leading me to want to pursue a career for customer service for tech or gaming companies.
Essentially: I have no clue how to start pursuing a job in this field. Where do I start, especially considering I don't have anything like a call center experience or a previous job history of solving things like support tickets. I also would need a job that either doesn't risk my disabillity benefits or can offer health insurance. I am located in Western Pennsylvania, close to Pittsburgh.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

2022.08.17 23:49 SenorStrategy2001 Trying to apply to Wawa and their website claim's I already do and as a result cancelled my application...

In a nut shell, I made an account yesterday, applied to a location yesterday. Got a call back and the guy warned me that I accidentally chose one farther than my nearest location and suggested I apply there since it's more convenient. I thought I did but regardless, I try to find that store and it's number does not show up. I call their hiring manager, said it didn't show up, they said call tommorow when their other hiring manager is in.
Literally after that phone call, like 10 minutes later I decided to refresh the page and try again, and the stored showed up. This time, when I applied I got the following email and the website claims they aren't considering me despite the fact that I know they're hiring and understaffed:
We are unable to move forward with your application because you have applied to a job posting through Wawa’s external career site, but have identified you as a current employee. Please follow the internal application process by logging into your Workday Home and selecting the Careers tab to view all positions available to current associates.
What the fuck? How is this possible? And how do I hurry this process along because I HATE my current job and need to switch.
Edit: To all the people saying the same "don't work at Wawa" or "that's a sign, turn back" etc, just please shut up. You're not helping at all.

2022.08.15 22:10 feetington Good place to work?

Hello everyone!
I am interviewing to be an AGM at one of the Wawas in my area tomorrow morning, and wanted to hear a few words from those of you who work there (any 'level') about what is is like. What do you like, dislike? Anything in particular that is of essential importance? Instances of excellence, or 'deal-breakers' would be great too.
I am really excited about this opportunity, as it is the next logical step in my career and I cannot seem to get there at my current company. However, I do very much like my current company, team and role, and would need a fair bit of additional compensation to jump ship. I
'm thrilled at the prospect but I don't want to make a hasty decision that I later regret.
Thanks in advance for chiming in! I really do appreciate it.

2022.08.13 03:50 Willing_Ad9830 Employment

I REALLY want to work for Wawa, think it would be a cool part-time job PLUS the nearest store is within less than a 6 minute walk. Here's my problem - I haven't created a resume in over 30 years and apparently I need to have one to apply for a careejob. Curious, how easy is it to get accepted for employment?

2022.07.01 00:26 Typical-Squash-6182 I'm 24 years old, make $85,000, live in Philadelphia, and work in IT.

Since my last diary: I’ve moved out, bought a car, and changed jobs!
https://www.reddit.com/MoneyDiariesACTIVE/comments/khia50/i_am_22_years_old_make_68000_live_in_nj_and_work/
Section One: Assets and Debt
Retirement Balance:
Roth IRA $13923.99 I maxed this out for 2020, 2021, and I'm working on 2022. Have $2880 left to go
403(b) $163.46 I just started my job, No employer-match until I work for 2 years. 5% pretax for now.
401k $6389.39 From old employer, I have rolled it over to the 403(b) but it hasn't transferred over yet
Total $20476.84 Trying to save one year's salary by 30
Equity if you're a homeowner: n/a I rent
Savings account balance:
HYSA $16920.16 15k for Emergency fund, the rest for a house down payment (one day fingers crossed)
Normal Savings account $2487.18 Sinking funds for car maintenance, student loans repayment (if they ever start up again)
Total $19407.32
Checking account balance:

Checking account $3687.18 I pay off my rent, and credit cards from this account so I like it to have a few thousand
Checking account 2 $250.00 I rarely use this account. It’s my account with Charles Schwab which has no international fees or atm fees so if I’m ever in a pickle this is the one I would use
Credit card debt (and how you accumulated it): 0, I use my credit cards for all purchases and pay it off every month
Student loan debt (for what degree):
It was $7250. I randomly paid $1000 of this in 2020 before I knew forbearance was a thing. $6250 is left for my undergraduate degree in the liberal arts. The rest of college was paid for by financial aid grants, and my work study job.
Anything else that's applicable to you:
I bought a 2018 car in the spring of 2021. It cost around $18000. I put down $10000, traded in my mom’s old vehicle (which she allowed me to use up until then) for 2k, and then paid off the remaining 6k over the past year. I own this outright now. It’s estimated to be worth about $18000 still.
____________________________________________________________________________
Section Two: Income
Income Progression: I've been working in my field for 1 year and 9 months. You can read more about my high school and college jobs in my last diary!

Time Salary Explanation
09/2020 $68000 I got this job secured before graduation in Dec 2019. The salary seemed absolutely bonkers to me and I did not negotiate bc I had a feeling the world was about to go to shit.
04/2021 $71000 April was the time of annual performance reviews and I wasn’t expecting anything, but I was surprised with a promotion and merit increase.
04/2022 $83000 Annual review time. 17% raise. I was so fckn anxious during this and had no idea what to expect. Felt super grateful
06/2022 $85000 Started new job with slight increase, and better work/life balance, and cheaper insurance

Have you changed careers? Did you recently have a breakthrough in your career? Here is where you can tell us about your salary/job progression.
I would describe myself as an overachiever in school, and even though I received a liberal arts degree (which wouldn’t typically translate to a high paying, secure job), I worked my butt off to get valuable internship experience, and prepare heavily for job interviews. I think that combined with sheer luck is how I landed my first job with such a high salary. I also attribute a lot of that luck to the fact that I went to a private university, which a lot of companies recruit heavily out of. I am very grateful I had that leg up in the initial job search.
After working in tech for almost 2 years, I wanted a change. I got a new job at a nonprofit, but in the IT side of things. The mission of the nonprofit is more aligned with what I went to school for originally.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: $4613.42.

Per pay period Monthly

Retirement -$163.46 $326.92
Health Insurance -$36.92 -$73.84
Dental -$4.61 -$9.22
Total $2306.71 $4613.42
Side Gig Monthly Take Home
I phonebank for an advocacy nonprofit and work around 8 hours a week. I make ~$100/a week
I also occasionally walk dogs through Wag whenever I have an itch to get a dog. This is like ~$13/ month.
Any Other Monthly Income Here
Do your parents pitch in monthly? Do you withdraw from a trust? Do you withdraw from your own savings regularly for whatever reason? Please specify here.
No.
Section Three: Expenses
Rent: $1135
My half for a 2 bedroom/2bathroom apartment I share with a roommate. We did get a covid deal where we got 2 months free, so this is actually $972.50
Parking garage: $308 This is absurd, I know
Renter’s insurance: $11.17
Water: $25.00
Wifi: $25.00
Phone bill: $80.00 for my mom and I. I pay the entire bill as a small gesture for her love and generosity.
Electric: $65 is the average. This varies widely. A lot more in the winter

Savings contribution: $1000/month into HYSA
Investment contribution: n/a right now besides my retirement
Debt payments: I have invisalign and the total cost of this was around ~5000. I got an interest free payment plan. The first two months cost around ~700. Now it’s ~240 a month.
Student loans are on forbearance so not making payments.
Donations (please specify if monthly or annual): I volunteer on Tuesday’s at a Cat Cafe for about 3 hours. I donate to causes sporadically throughout the year to the animal shelter I got my cat from, Everytown, and now abortion funds.
Subscriptions: Netflix $10.65, Spotify/Hulu $10.65, Hbo Max (I just got this this month so I forget but I think $15?) , Amazon $15
Gym membership: I do barre and yoga at a local studio. I buy a pack of 10 classes at a time which is $170, but there’s usually a promotion where 20% is off. This lasts me around 2 months. I also just found out my new job reimburses exercise classes up to $25 a month so I will take advantage of that in the future.
Car payment / insurance: No car payment. I pay for car insurance 6 months at a time. It was $733 last time :(
Paid hobbies: I am a novice crocheter, and I balled out and bought $30 of yarn a month ago so I think I’ll be good for a while.
Any other expense that's relevant to you: I have a spoiled cat who eats premium food, and has pet insurance. I checked YNAB and I average ~115 a month for her lol
_________________________________________________________________________
Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent/guardian(s) educate you about finances?
Money was definitely a source of stress for my family growing up as my parents are immigrants and came to this country with very little education. My dad wasn’t in the picture, and my mom worked a pink-collar job. She sent a lot of her income back to her family outside of the US. There were no conversations about credit cards, HYSA, investing, or retirement, but simply to save more than you were spending and to not go into debt. From 18-22 I had a vague idea that I should save my money, and pay off my credit card bill in full. However, it wasn’t until I received my first paycheck at my first full-time job that I realized I was clueless on what to do with it. I read I Will Teach You To Be Rich, The Millionaire Next Door, and a hundred money diaries on this reddit while bored in 2020 and it changed my financial life.
Did you worry about money growing up?
Yes.
Are you a spender or a saver?
I think I’m naturally a spender and would have been trapped by keeping up with the Jones’, but YNAB has really shifted my mindset. I really enjoy seeing my savings grow now.
If you have, when did you move out of your parents'/guardians' house? /At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself?
I moved out at 23 after living at home for a year after college graduation.
Do you worry about money now?
Yes. Even though I am in an astronomically better financial place than I thought I'd ever be in, I still think and worry about money often. I'm currently reading Quit Like a Millionaire and related a lot to the chapter on Scarcity Mindset. Also, I genuinely don't know how people save for a down payment, a typical wedding, retirement, children, etc. I just feel like there are loads of things to save for and I'm constantly behind (which is ridiculous because I'm in a very fortunate position!! idk ahhhhh!!!)
Also I feel like the sole person lifting my entire family out of poverty. I am my mother’s retirement plan so it’s a lot of pressure.

6.23 Thursday
7:30 AM: Wake up on this rainy day and do some chores before work. Cat rolls around on the ground to demand attention.
9:00 AM: Town hall time. We get to learn about some of our international offices and learn that the company is rapidly expanding. Woot woot!
1:00 PM: Have a requirements gathering meeting on our next new project with my manager then work with developers to fix some bugs in the afternoon.
5:30 PM: Sign out of work and go to yoga. I missed my workouts last week so it feels really good to be back in the studio.
TBH I’m writing this after the fact but I don’t think I did anything interesting this day. Stay tuned for a more exciting week.
Daily total: $0.
6.24 Friday
8 AM: Happy Friday and good morning. It’s payday!
10 AM: Another requirements gathering meeting to build a new platform with my manager. I’m mostly shadowing her since this is my 9th day of working. I still have a lot to learn, and I wish I could contribute more.
1 PM: I have a laser hair appointment for my underarms! How exciting! I already paid for this using a Groupon. This literally takes 3 minutes so I’m back home shortly after.
2 PM: Check in with my manager. We mostly spend this time ranting about the Supreme Court Decision. (It is SO wild having a female youngish manager, such a contrast to having an older male to report to). The rest of the time we spend coming up with visual ideas for a future project. Next week we will begin mocking up the visuals.
4 PM: I am craving hot cheetos. I decide since it’s Friday and for no other reason that I deserve these so I sneak down to Wawa and buy them (foreshadowing: this is a bad idea). I also get my roommate sour punch straws so she can come home to a nice treat. $4.08 Pretend to keep working and sign off at 4:45 pm.
6 PM: N comes over (same N as last diary). We’re both craving pizza so we try this boujee new place with amazing interior design choices. We get waffle fries, pizza, and drinks. I pay for dinner. $55.78
7:30 PM: We bop into a thrift store, but don’t buy anything. Then we walk to see the Delaware River since it’s a nice out.
8:30 PM: We head back to my place, and watch the Umbrella Academy and by 10:30 I’m pooped so we head to bed.
Daily total: $59.86
6.25 Saturday
7 AM: Wake up but lounge around in bed until 9 AM. Start writing this money diary (ooo meta). I have a stomach ache and it’s not great. Barely survive. Regret all my life choices.
9 AM: N wakes up finally and whilst conversing he reminds me of a John Mulaney quote. I put Comeback Kid on the tv.
10 AM- 12 PM: Do the dishes, clean the litter box, throw in laundry, clean the bathroom. N installs my ukulele holder to the wall. I eat Trader Joe’s frozen pesto pasta with cherry tomatoes and take a nap.
3 PM: N and I walk to the hardware store to get something to help hang up my curtains. (I’ve lived here for a year and never got around to it). I end up getting potting soil, a drill bit, and a drain snake. $20.49 I also stop by a convenience store and get a kombucha. $4.48. Turns out my concrete walls are harder to drill into than expected. I plant some seeds in a pot and feel excited for what’s to grow.
6:00 PM: We get tacos, a churro, and an elote. N pays. We watch more Umbrella Academy. We spend the rest of the night hanging, chatting, and playing with my cat. Lights out by 10:30 bc we’re lame.
Daily total: $24.97
6.26 Sunday
6:00 AM: I do not sleep well and I’m bothering N, so I go out to the couch and try to fall asleep there. Wake up officially around 8 and make a cup of tea. N wakes up around 9 and then we get ready for yoga class!! (his first one, this is very exciting).
10AM- 11AM- yogaing. N impresses me with a crow pose in class! We leave happy and supple. On the way home we stop by a cafe and I get a turkey sandwich with brie and cranberry aioli, and a coffee muffin for N $13.25.
2: 45 PM: Leave for N’s aunt’s house. On the way there, I stop for flowers and chips. $13.82 They always have an annual summer party where we can swim, eat burgers, and catch up. So we do exactly that on this 90 degree + day :)
8:30 PM: Upon leaving, N’s aunt asks us to house sit later this week while they’re out of town. Since we both WFH we agree (we each internally celebrate like crazy because they have a pool, and a home theater that we usually only get to utilize one day a year lol we’re such mooches).
9:15 PM: N and I arrived separately so I arrive home alone around this time. Greet the cat, and get ready for bed. Cat is very upset I’ve been gone so long so she cuddles me extra. Fall asleep around 10: 30 PM.
Daily total: $27.07
6.27 Monday
5:00 AM: My cat has the zoomies and wakes me up.
Struggle to sleep in until 7:30 AM. I eventually get up and do my morning routine of washing my face and applying niacinamide from the Ordinary, then Murad moisturizer (the BEST moisturizer if you have oily skin). I clean the litter box and take time to catch up on the money diary. I notice that my 6 year old personal laptop is not charging past 28%. Welp looks like a big purchase is in my near future.
8:30 AM: I donate to abortionfunds.org. $30.
9:00 AM: Sign into work. I have a scrum meeting at 9:45 AM. I then have a meeting with developers and product manager to talk about our most recent project. We talk about what went well, what didn’t, and areas of improvement. Again, I just joined so I was very minimally involved in this. The meeting is light hearted (some would even call it silly) since we’re doing it in Jamboard and I feel more connected to my team already.
11:00 AM: My manager assigns me a task to organize, and update jira tickets and their associated spreadsheets. I suggest a new methodology that could possibly save time in the future. I think my manager likes this idea, but I feel ~weird~ for being so forward about changing a current process when I’ve only been here for 10 working days. N calls me to tell me some bad news about his job. :(
1-4:30 PM: Meetings meeting meetings. A lot of meetings about current software pain points, and then my manager and I begin to design mockups.I share my ideas, but I feel insecure about them. I was more confident at my last job regarding ideation and execution, but here I feel like a newborn baby deer who is still too inexperienced to know what the software should look like or how it should function.
5:30 PM: My roommate and I go to barre class. I haven’t been in a minute and my booty cheeks are burning in protest. It is downpouring so we walk home getting drenched in the process. I am really trying to remain positive but today is really dragging me down.
7 PM: I eat taco leftovers. (I realize I have not been logging my meals, sorry it's not my thing). I watch God’ Favorite Idiot and go to bed early. Use Youth to the People moisturizer before bed.
Daily total: $30
6.28 Tuesday
2: 00 AM: Wake up from anxiety and have the desire to deep clean the living room and kitchen.I give everything a good wipe down, change my sheets, and throw kitchen towels in the wash. I feel like I’m pretty quiet but maybe my roommate hates me. Try to go back to bed around 4.
8:44 AM: Roll out of bed. Very unusual night, this doesn’t happen often. Work involves meetings and training with my manager as usual.
5:30 PM: Leave to volunteer at the cat cafe. Stop for gas and pay the most I’ve ever paid. I stop the pump at $50 because I can’t stand it going any higher and that seemed to fill it anyway. We have another new volunteer and I get to meet 2 new cats. I get a salad at the pizza place nearby. $12.65. The regular cats greet me and I help clean litter boxes, wipe down windows, and get a lot of snuggles. I leave around 8:40 PM.
9:00 PM: Trick my own cat to get into the cat backpack and grab her litter box and food. We’re off to house sit! Get there around 10 PM and go to sleep around 12.
Daily total: $62.65
6.29 Wednesday
8:40 AM: N and I do not sleep well so we finally get up around this time. I quickly get dressed and log onto work. I have HR training to do, and spend my mornings in meetings.
12:00 PM: Have a virtual lunch meeting. My manager sets these up so I can get to know other teams. We find out there are some travel opportunities to go to South America in the future and my manager says we need to find a way for the both of us to go !!! Did I mention I love my job?
2:00 PM N leaves to grocery shop so we can survive here. I survive on snacks until he returns. I take a nap during a lull at work then test some bug fixes in our QA environment. I find out that my old company that I just left started doing layoffs. So glad I yeeted out of there.
5:00 PM: Sign out of one laptop and log into my personal. Time to phonebank for my part time job. I sit in the backyard near the pool to call Pennsylvania residents to ask if they’re registered to vote, and assist them with the process.
6:00 PM: I bake chicken breasts so N has something to eat when he comes home from sports practice.
8:30 PM: We finish up phonebanking with a debrief session. I didn’t get yelled at by anyone on the phone so I’d say it was pretty successful. I watch HGTV for the rest of the night and go to bed at 11 PM.
Daily total: $0
At the end of each day please tally up your daily expenses. Then at the end of your diary please tally up all expenses in the following categories:
Weekly total: $204.55
Food + Drink: $90.24
Fun / Entertainment: 0
Home + Health: 20.49
Clothes + Beauty:
Transport: $50
Other (gifts and donation): 13.82 + 30
Lastly, reflect on your diary! How do you feel about your spending? Was this a normal week for you? Has this inspired you to make changes or has it given you a “wow I’m doing pretty good” confidence boost? Is there anything you’re actively working on? No need to answer any or all these questions but just use this space to write any thoughts you have!
I feel fine about my spending since the state of the country seems to be in ruins and I was an anxious mess. This was an unusual week because I was unexpectedly asked to house sit. While I do eat out on the weekends, I usually grocery shop on Sunday and cook exclusively at home during the work week. Idk hope you enjoyed!!

2022.06.13 22:00 bingusandfloppa wawa lore

wawacat, known as wawa kotek is a kotek cat born on december 31st, creating wamesen as a holiday, wawa is a god and is praised upon many teks, wawa kotek is not visible in tek's terms. He was the second-born to Kevin and Karina Kotek and the brother of Popcat. this is only a legend in the bible, who knows if wawa is real? what if we here at Wawacat lore Wiki were to tell you about his mortal form, before becoming a god. His mother was the mayor of the small town of Kotekburg, and his dad was the chief of police. His brother had struck oil and became famous for his rapping career, and he wanted to be just like his brother. Wawacat became a rapper in his teens and is well known for his rap cover of Enemy by Imagine Dragons. He became an internet meme after he released the album photo that we see on the right. At age 20, he became a politician and became mayor of Kotekburg. He made some good desicions, like adding more libraries and firefighter and police stations to the town. He was liked as a majority vote, and even worshipped by some. He became a rapper again, with a remastered version of his cover of Imagine Dragons' Enemy, and a new collab with his big brother Popcat, called Poppin' and Boppin'. He announced that he, Popcat, and his cover artist Michael, would be going on tour. They would be visiting Floogston, Kotekaly, Wawassia, and Wawastralia. But while driving in Wawastralia, wawa got into a car accident flew through the windshield. He was unharmed, but his ears got cut off and his arm was broken from impact. He retired to recover and temporarily became a game designer.

After designing Wawa the Kotek (sonic the hedgehog but with wawa) and Wawa the Kotek 2, Wawa went back to his old career: rapping and creating hip-hop music. his first album when he came back was a rap cover of jump in the caddilac' which went through the roof. It became a worldwide meme, and a universally listened-to song. He even collaborated with Keyboard Cat, and they together made the song Cool Cat. The fans loved the new songs. Wawa decided to go on another tour.

All good things come to an end, and one of those things is Wawacat. In 2023, he, Michael, and Keyboard Cat were driving to New Wawa City on tour. "Welcome to New Wawa City!" Wawa said. Suddenly, he was stricken with a storm of bullets. He was bleeding from 20 areas, and Micheal was the witness of the un-aliving. He was riding in the front seat when Wawa got hit with the bullets. He screamed as the car swerved into the pit of a construction site. Micheal and Bento were rescued by construction workers, and they took Wawa's body to the doctor, and they did everything they could to keep him alive. But they failed. Wawa was pronounced dead. They tested for fingerprints on the bullets, and they supposed it was a secret FBI operation, and that Wawacat was assassinated by 85. He became a god right after.

After Wawa's death, Micheal kept a vial of his blood. He tried for months, but then he finally did it. He had successfully created Wawacat II. Wawacat II looked like a carbon copy of the original Wawacat, but Wawacat II had a small, polygonal-looking deformity by his eye. Wawacat II had all the original memories of Wawacat OG (except for his death). He began a rapping career again, and no one ever knew that he had come back from the dead, except for one person. But she just let it slide and didn't think too much of it. Wawacat II, at a concert, met a girl named Wawaette, and they went on their first date on May 24th, 2024. They were married a year later, and then had twins, who they named Wynter and Wawa Jr. When Gwagwa escaped the WCP foundation, Wawa had slain Gwagwa at the gate of the foundation building he was being held captive in. The event is secret to the public to this day.

2022.06.13 19:48 Jcb112 We Outsourced Everything to the Humans: The Contractors (4/?)

First Previous Next
The tense confrontation dragged on for what felt like hours to the dismay of the petrified onlookers. None of them could hold a candle to the Talari’s raw strength and fighting prowess, let alone the Thalnoxan’s, should it go berserk in these cramped quarters. A silence descended over all of them, or at least, the closest thing to a silence that was possible given the constant droning hum of the life support systems. It was a dreadful, hollow groaning, one that seemed to harmonize with the steadily increasing intensity of the Thaloxan’s growls.
In stark contrast to Thal, Isak’s staredown was one completely devoid of the obvious signs of predatory intimidation. It was instead defined by a sheer and stark silence. Nary a sound escaped her beak as her lack of any discernible movement was intimidation on its own. Her two front-facing eyes, rounded like many predatory species, refused the temptation of blinking; focusing squarely on the beast in front of her without any sign of fear or hesitation.
There was only one of two ways this could end, and neither of them were bloodless.
It was at this realization, and with what seemed to be a distinct lack of self preservation, that Payton stepped forward.
What had just seconds ago been a quivering mass of cowering skin and bones decorated in titles and regalia the rest of the contractors distinctly lacked, now strode towards the two predators without hesitation.
Part of her knew this was foolish.
Part of her yelled and screamed out, chastising her for her actions.
Yet another part of her, a latent one, beckoned her to take a stand.
And just like that, she found herself standing between the two apex predators, comically outclassed, and comparatively puny next to these titans.
“Listen, I won’t act like I know what beef exists between all the different races in this galaxy. Heck, I admit I don’t even know what any of this is about!” Payton began gesticulating wildly at the pair, and towards the terrified onlookers.
“But I know that a civilized, educated, well-trained and experienced contractor, deathworlder or not, isn’t going to ruin their career, their lives, on what’s so clearly just a heated moment and a misunderstanding.”
The human turned to Thal, her eyes meeting his, and instead of the fear or terror he expected, all he saw was this piercing gaze of unbridled confidence; as if he was talking to a fellow Thalnoxan eye to eye.
“You’re more than a stereotype. We’re all more than just stereotypes.” She promptly added.
This jarring exchange snapped Thal out of his rising rage. But it wasn’t because of the human’s words, no. Those minced sentences were background noise to him, mellowing out into the ambiance of the life support systems. What had truly snapped him out of it was those eyes. It was the fearless gaze of a fellow apex predator, not prey. It was the look of confidence that was missing amongst even the species of the Great Powers’ (their eyes were always blanketed by a look of superiority, not predatory confidence).
This human was a cut above the rest, and if he were to try to look past all the evidence that contradicted it… he could honestly consider them an apex predator in their own right. Just by virtue of that ballsy move alone, alongside those two, unmistakably predatory eyes.
It was at that moment that Thal realized he needed to cut his losses. Having another pack-leader, another Alpha amongst them, taking charge of their little corner of the ship was just too much to take in. Especially when it was a self-proclaimed, untested, unblooded, Talari alpha.
So he put aside his urges for now.
One day, when his kind were the ones calling the shots, society would be reorganized to fit their specifications. But for now, he had to bide his time. He had to tolerate this.
The appearance of a third party meant that neither would suffer from the humiliation of conceding defeat. It was part of Payton’s little gambit, to act as a destabilizing force to halt this runaway reaction. If she hadn’t intervened, one of them would be lying bloodied on the floor at this point, or worse.
“Alright, are we all cool here?” Payton spoke, breaking Thal’s brief spurt of introspection.
Thank all of the deities above for those xeno-cultural sensitivity courses… The human thought to herself.
“Quite.” Isak replied, giving a slight nod of appreciation to the human.
“Hmmph.” Thal added soon after, acknowledging the human with the slightest sliver of eye contact before stepping back.
The tension had been broken, but what remained was an overwhelming sense of awkward dysfunction permeating the combined kitchen and dining area.
Payton knew what had to be done next, as she gave Isak a small gesture of approval.
It was customary, after a stand-off between predators, that the dominant or most numerous party would agree upon the next most suitable course of action. Especially if the fight had ended without a clear-cut winner.
Thal’s eyes grew wide at that little maneuver by the human, begrudgingly letting out a small growl of acceptance to whatever was to come next.
“It’s customary that after everyone has properly introduced themselves, we all sit down for a nice, long dinner. One where every member of this family cooks, prepares, or at least brings along an item from their local cuisine.” Isak spoke, returning to her calmer, warmer tone of speech.
“I got the Wawa nut-mix!” Cirril perked up first, skittering from one of the many cabinets to reveal a tray half covered in foil, revealing what looked to be a fruitcake packed to the brim with fruits and nuts, then covered in a deep layer of what could only be described as trailmix.
“Wait till you see the best part.” He promptly added, revealing a translucent bag, and adding yet another layer of nuts.
Payton, and the rest of the group looked on with bemusement.
“In light of this tradition, I have brought the only dish palatable to non-Valmorians.” The large centipede-like alien unwound itself from the stool, its long body actually reaching the fridge with its thorax, whilst its hind legs still remained firmly planted on its seat. After a careful rummaging it now held what seemed to be a vase-like vessel in its 10-armed grasp, placing it down gingerly next to the Wawa nut-mix.
What was now the centerpiece of the table… was quite literally a clear, glass vase with two faucets attached to either side of it. Poking out from the top was a tropical flower with a dazzling array of colors that bordered on the absurd.
“In Valar, our species calls this the Vilinamirtix-Kix-Larax. Federation translators refer to it as the Kix-Larax soup. It is a soup, served cold, that matures with time. The moment it leaves the appropriate 10 degrees Celsius, chemical reactions between the stem of the flower and the carbonated water will commence, releasing a slow stream of toxins from the plant.”
“Wait, toxins?” Payton retorted, warily.
“My apologies, a more appropriate word would be… organic compounds normally used as a toxin to ward off predators. However, the specific pH of this water and its carbonated state neutralizes most of the active toxic compounds, leading to a rich flavor of sweet, tart, sour, and floral notes.” Krix promptly poured Payton a glass, the human sniffing it, and drinking it soon after.
“...This is quite literally Sprite.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Oh, it’s an Earth beverage, I’ll… oh man, this… huh, the flavors change in your mouth too?”
“Yes. Your core body temperature is higher than our own, which vaporizes many of the organic compounds in the liquid. You may smell-”
“Caramel? Vanilla… what… I’m going to need a full breakdown of the properties of this drink, Krix.” Payton spoke gleefully, leading to an enthusiastic ‘nod’ from the insect-like-creature.
“Ahem.” A voice behind all of them perked up, as an annoyed Isak towered over the both of them.
“You of all people should know the rules, Krix, no sampling the dishes before we’re all at the table.”
“Of course, my apologies Isak.”
As if on cue, a loud rumbling ultrasonic murmur broke through the gap in silence, following it up with the beeping of the oven in the background.
“Sapients! Sapients! Many have wondered what it is our humble race has concocted over our long, long existence. For centuries, no, millennia we have existed without the gift of fire.” The raptor-like orca would use both of his fins in an attempt to emulate the flickering of flames. “So many may ask: Birril Breeya of the Lanshin Reefs, Protector of the Spawn, Bringer of sustenance, what pray tell can your backwards race produce for us that isn’t the raw flesh of some unfortunate sea creature?
“Well. First off, I’d say, unfortunately yes, this is another unfortunate sea creature. So fellow herbivores, you may wish to leave if this troubles you.”
Cirril bowed his head down slightly, only to be perked up by one of Birril’s fins as he would continue.
Smoke from behind the raptor-orca would start to become increasingly noticeable with each passing moment, steam now billowing incessantly from the oven behind him.
“And to answer that second, highly controversial, yet pervasive question… yes, we have cooked food for millenia without the aid of artificial flames! Yes, you heard me right, cook! For you see, there exists an extensive network of hydrothermal vents and open lava-pits near our little reef. And so most of our cuisine is in fact, cooked, boiled, and steamed to perfection…. Behold!”
The raptor-orca would return to the oven, opening it up, allowing steam to envelope the entire room, blinding everyone save for Isak and Thal, before revealing to the entire party:
A whole fish.
“I have brought the terror of the reef, the despoiler of spawn, the ever-sneaky Rilax fish!”
It was a fish that spanned the length of the table, measuring perhaps 3, maybe even 4 feet long. There were no signs of seasoning, of flavoring, or any garnishes for that matter.
“It may look simple, but its flesh is absolutely sublime. Makes sense given how it eats almost exclusively the spawn of the reef. Not our spawn mind you, but… well... maybe a couple.”
Finally, it was Payton’s turn as she quickly rushed to her quarters, shuffled around a few crates the crew had already brought up for her… and then it clicked.
She came back with a styrofoam container, leaning over it as it was time to introduce her own contribution to the group.
“I’m not a culinary major, and I don’t claim to be an expert on this stuff. But before I left Earth my ex from France, erm, one of the nation-states on our homeworld, gave me this care package. Now, I was saving this for a special occasion but… I think this is as good a time as any to share the fruits of our great culture.”
She opened the container, to reveal several shapes covered in plastic and paper wraps. Shapes ranging from rounded wheels to wedge-shaped triangles, and even just flat out square cubes.
“Cheese. I’ve brought cheese. A charcuterie board actually, now I have some wine here, some dried fruits, crackers, but, ooh let me open this up-”
The moment she started unwrapping the packaging however, both Thal and Isak immediately gagged.
“Oh.”
Human, did you bring a bioweapon onto this fucking ship?!” The Thalnoxan growled out, as Payton immediately began re-wrapping and re-sealing the whole container.
“Payton, what exactly was that, deer?” Isak interjected, in between a few hard coughs.
“Well… It’s cheese. So erm, you take the milk of a cow, or a goat or-”
“Your kind ingest milk other than the milk of your mothers?” The Thalaxon practically wretched out.
“Well erm, yes. Is… is that not a common thing or…” Prelton quickly took stock of all the reactions around her, and it was clear judging by the looks on everyone’s faces, that this certainly wasn’t common practice.
“Ok. Ok. Yes we do, but we don’t just drink it. We erm… well in the case of cheeses? We allow the milk to… mature.” She smiled coyly.
Human. Elaborate on what you are implying by mature.” The Thalnoxan replied unamused.
“Well. It depends on the specific cheese but you basically take the milk, you leave it somewhere for a while, you mix stuff into it, generally bacteria and some mold, but generally you just leave it until it curdles and then becomes a solid and then gets moldy and then-”
You… you brought us rotten food?!”
“N-no! It’s, aged. Like fine wine. Speaking of wine…” Payton quickly changed the subjects, grabbing a large bottle from the box just before sealing it shut.
“It’s safe, I swear. It’s aged but as in, alcohol aged so it’s fine. It’s a red wine, a pairing wine but like, we can just drink it straight not a problem!”
Thal eyed the human once more, before shrugging in agreement.
With that faux pas out of the way, the last on the list were the two deathworlders.
Isak would go first.
“Well. Given that I haven’t seen home in quite literally decades, living and breathing within these four walls; I’m afraid I’m going to have to admit that I don’t have anything to share with you this evening. However, I do promise that when we arrive near Talaria, I will attempt to order some of our famed Talari Caramels.”
The entire room nodded in agreement, before turning toward the Thalnoxan with great anticipation.
The Thalnoxan would look around, his eyes darting slowly across the dinner table as it locked onto its target, the pile of flatbread that the human had been choking on earlier.
He picked up the plate of leftover bread, and simply pointed to it. “This is Botag bread.”

2022.05.18 09:33 NefariousnessOk7807 Question

This is a question to the higher managers at Wawa. I’ve been at Wawa for a year and have been moving up into management. I currently hate the job as a whole and am tired of being understaffed. I have been thinking of just quitting, but I was wondering is it worth it to fight it out and make a career here?

2022.03.06 18:02 Reila01 College students that are currently BROKE BROKE. what yall up to today?

I literally had to call out of work today cause i have no gas money and my tank is practically a few centimeters away from reaching E so theres no way i was gonna make it to work and even if i did i would definitely not have any gas left to drive back home afterwards. plus im hungry rn and all i have available to eat is spicy korean noodles and a few small breakfast sausages i have left so i guess thats what ill eat today. Usually in times like these i'd go out and do some doordash deliveries but cant do that cause i cant be out driving and the next time i get paid from work is Thursday. Even my bank account is overdrafted.
And if youre curious as to why im so broke well thats the life when youre a student living on your own paying your own bills and rent so i dont have family to rely on and even if i did the last thing i would do is tell my mother about it or she would just pressure me about moving back home with her and i literally left to live on my own because she didnt support my student status and made my mental health severely bad. Oh that reminds me i havent picked up my meds from cvs cause yeah ...broke ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I have class tomorrow morning and im waiting for my 11 dollars from my last doordash deliveries to transfer so i could add some amount of gas to make it to class tomorrow. On friday i told my school about my financial troubles and they were able to help me out by sending me a 200 dollar wawa gas card which im still waiting on and they were able to even pay off my phone bill. That was some relief off my shoulders but i still got other bills coming up. I cant even say im anxious anymore ive just accepted this now.
This is my reality until i get through college and find a good paying career. Which is why im an engineering major. I refuse to waste time in college. Dont wanna be poor like this forever.
