2023.03.30 19:23 Bruhmangoddman Trials and Tribulations vs Apollo Justice: The mentor problem
Finally! My long awaited post is here.
In AA3 and AA4, two great games, there is a persistent problem that hampers each of the games' protagonists.
The mentor. Mia Fey for Phoenix Wright, and Phoenix Wright for Apollo Justice.
Why this is a problem: Because both Nick and Apollo are both player characters and actual narrative agents within the scope of their respective stories. And so we're presented with a two-fold issue. 1. The overbearing presence of the mentor tends to have the player's hand be held by the game and not let them figure stuff out on their own. 2. The mentor's overly expanded role robs the main character of their agency, development and progression.
Mia is very much equivalent to Phoenix's training wheels. And it's not just T&T, it's the BLOODY TRILOGY! Almost every instance Nick is cornered - boom! Spirit mentor dressed in fanservice attire to da RESCUE! Screw that. We beat White because of her. We prolonged trials because of her. We got Kudo to testify because of her. We got Atmey to spill the beans because of her. We got Diego to acknowledge Nick as a competent person BECAUSE OF HER.
Not only that, but Mia having such an important role in the NARRATIVE also sidelines Nick. Who saved Nick and persuaded him to pursue the badge? Edgeworth? WAHAHAHAHAHAA! No, suckers. It was Mia, who saved his a$$ in 2014, when he was one foot in the artistic career, and he seemed like he'd forgotten about Miles. That makes for a technically sweet story and stronger dynamic between the two... But I don't really like it. Also because Nick doesn't get to have his true nemesis, his archenemy in the trilogy. No, Diego is not the man. Neither is Dahlia. No. You wanna know who has a nemesis here? Miles Edgeworth and Mia Fey. INSTEAD OF HAVING NICK DEAL WITH MISGUIDED AFFECTION FOR DOLLIE, THEY SUGARCOATED HIS ERRONEOUS JUDGEMENT and GAVE HIM HER SISTER AS THE TRUE DATE, UNDERMINING ANY CONNECTION BETWEEN THEM! Nick doesn't bring Dahlia down, it's Mia! TWICE! Dahlia hates him only because Iris tells her he's an idealist and because he holds a potentially incriminating piece of evidence. That's as arbitrary as the reasons she took down Diego and Valerie for. There's no deeper connection, narrative plotline here. Diego hates Nick and forgives him because of Mia. And because of the retcons, Turnabout Memories has made Phoenix's interactions with Payne and Grossberg post 2014 quite weird. Nick fails to be a fully competent attorney as well as a person who perseveres against their adversaries and defeats them.
Which leads us into Apollo Justice.
I'm sure most of you know Takumi never wanted Wright in the game. But upon coercion from Capcom, he did the best and only logical thing he could: Fix Nick and give him a proper, personal story. Whilst sacrificing Apollo!!!
The Horned Head is completely out of his depth here. Wrighto suddenly takes over his first trial (being the bloody defendant, not even 2014 Phoenix had such a nerve) and just handholds Apollo through Turnabout Trump, doing almost all of the work for him. His Honor, Kristoph and Winston are rightfully losing their freaking minds. Then Nick peaces out and returns for 4-4. Apollo does nothing, really. Nick just does all the investigations for him, obtains vital testimony and evidence, to finally connect all the dots himself. Polly feels like a keyboard Pianist Wright used to type his manifesto of righteous vengeance into Word and then cement it with a seal of Ends Justify the Means. Apollo never learns of his connection to the Gramaryes. He never talks to Drew, Valant, Klavier or Winston about the case because he never meets them or doesn't go to them or never knows what to ask. I don't even know what his relations with Kristoph are.
Which game is more excusable in its sin: AJ. Apollo is a rookie, even younger than PW at the start of his path. Meanwhile, 34-year old Nick is a based sigma gigachad with superior logic, rizz and drip. He's such a fantastic piece of visuals and writing mixed together to create the perfect hidden protagonist. The game sins by letting him hijack the plot, but his character and story are the best he's ever been and going to be. Meanwhile, while I like Mia in 3-1 and 3-4, I don't know who she really is. No mentions of her family in her cases, no thoughts on her mentors, zero. Where's the usual great inner monologue? Just the mindset - CATCH DAHLIA. DEFEND CLIENTO. And when she's Phoenix's channeled training wheels, she has cringe and even shady moments, especially in Reunion and Turnabout.
That's why Yamazaki based. He brings back the good ol' proactive protagonist, mostly in the flesh of Miles and Apollo. They usually have to work on their own and have an active stake and nemesis in the story. Prosecutor's Path and Spirit of Justice do so many wonders to their characters.
Sorry for the wall of text.

2023.03.30 19:23 PolarKC Competing objectives/events *can* be the reason players keep playing
Hey everybody. Please read the full post before jumping to conclusions. A TLDR will be provided at the bottom.
Many of ya come from Tarkov and Hunt. Both great games with their own set of flaws. I'm here to talk about The Cycle and what it can borrow to make a wipe-less endgame engaging enough for players to continue coming back for more.
We're not here to argue if wipes are good or bad. Wipes are gone. We don't need a questline to repeat every 3 months to keep players come back. We need fun and engaging gameplay. Repeatable quests that say "kill X things" "bring me X item" or "visit this place" are not engaging end-game activities. They're easy to implement but they won't keep players coming back for more.
Whenever I see someone in this subreddit compare The Cycle to Hunt Showdown, the comparison is met with criticism and skepticism. I'm here to tell you that what keeps players coming to Hunt Showdown can actually be implemented to the end-game of The Cycle to give players interesting objectives that lead to butt-clenching PvP engagements.
Hunt is less about loot than Cycle, and more about killing a big bad monster that everyone else is trying to kill too. It's similar in that we all want to extract alive with our gear and something of value.
What does any of this have to do with the Cycle? What am I suggesting?
Imagine accepting a contract from Korolev / ICA / Osiris that tells you they tagged a rogue Storm-Infused Jeff and it's current location is Base Camp on Bright Sands. They want you to drop in, kill it, run a research lab on its body, and extract with the data for a massive payout of k-marks & scrips. Now imagine 2 other squads on your Bright Sands server just dropped in with the same objective. Guess the factions care more about the data than a few prospectors getting foamed.
This pushes players together in a tense situation with rewards at stake, in a way that is repeatable but varied in location and monster. They can be creative with boss-like enemies that reside in specific locations, it doesn't need to be jeff. The objective doesn't even need to be an AI boss. Anything engaging & creative that other players on your map are guaranteed to be competing for can make for good gameplay.
"Hey that sounds an awful lot like Hunt." So? If it's fun and engaging Cycle should have its own take on it. I want real reasons to load into the map that aren't simple item fetch quests. I want a guaranteed engagement. Running around the map and hoping for fun isn't good enough end game. Drills are an okay example of an event that draws in firefights, but the problem is other players in your server didn't load in with fighting a drill in mind. They aren't loaded out for it and aren't mentally prepared for it. Intentionally loading in for a boss-fight / event / objective like this where you know other squads are too is great for gameplay.
TLDR; Borrow inspiration from Hunt for repeatable, varied, and engaging Objectives/World Events. This can take the form of special contracts that other players on your server are guaranteed to drop in with too, forcing you to compete with others to kill the "big bad" or complete some objective, and ultimately extract with your gear and earn the payout.

Is there a good place in Seattle to sell comic books? They're 90's comics so I'm not expecting much, but it'd be nice for them to end up in the hands of someone who wants them. If not selling, then donating would be good, but I'm not sure if Goodwill takes them.

2023.03.30 19:22 YanniRotten The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are ducks, and they nibble you to death.
"How many people?” I asked.
“A hundred and eighty-odd. I cut down their ration by three per cent just to see what would happen. They haven’t reacted at all. About the medicine, I had one of the drivers ask them if they needed a doctor, and they said no. They didn’t say they had a doctor, and they didn’t say they were all healthy. They just said ‘No’ and walked away.”
“They’re either very lucky or very generous,” Artel said.
The Old Man gave him a quick look. “I’m always ready to believe in those things up to a point. But now I’d like to know if maybe there’s something they haven’t told anybody about.”
Artel nodded.
I wanted to know about the food part. “What kind of a town is it?” I asked. “What kind of people are they? Could they be fishing or farming?”
“Not in that country,” the Old Man said. “They’re just property owners — squatters, some of them, but it’s a community. All friends and relatives, all townies. Real estate agents, storekeepers, tree surgeons — all they know is how to sell cars and salt water taffy to each other.” He sounded angry. The same thing angered us all: it had turned out farming was more than scratching the ground and dropping seeds into it. And it’s slow, besides being hard to learn. He’d tell you just the opposite, but your hungry townsmen would rather die than farm.
It sounds good, to just wave a hand and say, “Let there be light again.” But that's the kind of thing that drives you wild. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are ducks, and they nibble you to death.

2023.03.30 19:21 Healthy-Nebula364 Good Japanese "visual novels" with easy gameplay (looking to be handhold)
My thoughts on the current landscape:
機械仕掛けのイヴ ~Dea Ex Machina~ I don't know anything about this. Contender?
Baldr Sky Gambs said this game is a piece of shit and that's pretty convincing in itself
Evenicle: seems a bit too vanilla for my liking. Not h wise, I just mean it seems a bit generic
Rance: I'm stuck on Kichikuou because it's pretty intimidating. Went through a rabbithole of cheating, following a walkthrough religiously etc... Stuck at the beginning because I'm scared of messing up a tiny bit and ruining stuff
Dai series: first impression of gameplay is seems intimidating. Again to reiterate my brain turns to mush the moment I have to figure out this video game shit
Venusblood: seems too much nukige
Eiyu senki: Heard it was ezmode sengoku rance which is a good thing.
Utawarerumono: It's free on the phone which has no gameplay
Tobiden/mahou shoujo and other rpgmaker: lets be honest the graphic is a bit shit but i may down to be convinced. These two example my problem is tobiden is long as hell and mahou shoujo is yuri
Well receieved eushully games like ikusa megami: I tried zero for 30 minutes and seems complicated
danganronpa, zero escape: lol no
I guess my options are to play one of the above games based off feedback it being easy or to play some obscure game. Sure I could play these "jrpgs" but most of them seems like they're a bit too gameplay heavy

2023.03.30 19:21 Appropriate-Repair86 I want his name carved deep in my flesh
I've experienced derealization my whole life but last year, about this time, I hit rock bottom. At the time I had no chances of removing the stress factors out of my life and I couldn't get myself to talk about this with people. I was already struggling to get over an ex of mine for so long and a then friend who newly broke up was venting to me about her ex almost all the time. I was obviously not thinking super straight so that made me go back to my obsessively thinking phase and he somehow became sacred in my eyes. My method to "wake up" was always "stimulating" my body. I'd get my hand close to fire, walk outside for far longer than I should with thin clothes on while it was very cold. And so would cutting yourself be, you know. His favourite colour was red. He was inside my veins and if I wanted to reach him I needed to let the red out. That was the ritual that needed to be done in order to get his love. Thankfully I had some good friends who helped me snap out of it but lately the thoughts are back."When he comes back, how else can I convince him that I never forgot him?" is what a part of me keeps telling. The urges I get are not half as intense or strong as what I used to experience thank God so I won't be cutting myself, no. But right at the moment I thought I was finally fine, the thoughts coming back scare me. It's sad, really. Just very sad. I make art that surprises even me with how violent it is later when I look at it. Does anybody feel something similar?

2023.03.30 19:21 shylittledoll let’s talk about our imagination!!
I had seen a post in this group talking about how depressing it has become here and such, I’ve never been to good at paying attention to things so I never really realized 😅 but if that has become the case here, then I thought I would make my own little post meant for something more light and fun!!
one thing infps are more known for is our imagination, and that is definitely a big part of me, something I can stay well consistent with.
so I want us to talk about our imaginations in our talent!! the things your mind comes up with that you could make or do. and hopefully seeing others thoughts might encourage others to pursue those thoughts!!
I will go first, I actually kind of have a plan for my future with this~
so some of my bigger things is I am a photographer and a writer, I also like to make thing- mostly out of resin. I want to start with making money with my photography, even making cool edits to them so there is more to the pictures then just what was taken, I love photography because it stops everything within a picture forever while everything also still keeps going, and then you could also change those moments from a lone, dark woods- to “there is something with us” or a pretty garden into a place swarming with fairies and it all comes to life but stays still!! I also want to make jewelry and things out of resin, I have always like to make scenes that are frozen so I want to make and sell things like that!!
I am actually something I call “the bone tree” now, I have been working on it for a bit though and am moving slowly on it, but it consists of all these bones and things I found around my land to make a kind of junk yard centering a metal tree with bones for leaves.
then my books, I come up with all these ideas of what I want to do with my life, but things that are harder for me to reach or scared off from so I remake them as stories in my head, one of them I kind of plan to make a sort of reality in the future- one of these stories takes place in a dystopian future with a lesbian girl, her girlfriend, her dog and friends traveling the world in a bus they renovated when they find themselves running from some bad things they should not have discovered.
I won’t get to into detail because I could honestly ramble on about my books but if you have any questions about any of them or anything else feel free to ask!!
I want to take all these things and ideas of mine and eventually sell and make lots of money off of them so I could renovate building and places to make them into really cool museums and places for people to go to and see, one of the places I want to renovate I also plan to make a books about!!
so now your guys turn, tell me about your artistic thoughts?? I wanna hear al of it and I would love for you guys to have an outlet to express your ideas here!!

2023.03.30 19:20 SalaryFit3741 Nervous about how this change will affect my (24f) relationship with my boyfriend (25m)
Some background: Bf and I have been together for around 7 years, met during college and are currently living together and looking to get engaged soon-ish (neither of us are in a rush). We're super happy now, but there have definitely been some bumps in the road along the way, mostly due to him getting in his head about the future/questioning our relationship.
Anyways, since graduating he's been working in a competitive and high paying industry. He's always made very good money, but recently he landed a job paying exponentially more than what he's making now (think seven figure range). I'm incredibly proud of him, but at the same time I can't help but feel nervous about what this means for our future. We've been together for a LONG time, and I feel as though this type of money can really start to change people for the worse, especially when you're thrust into that environment at such a young age and things like marriage/kids/etc., still feel like distant milestones. I trust his character and that he's capable of handling himself, but I also really don't want to end up in the classic cliche of the college couple who met when they were young and then divorce 10 yrs later because the rich husband has found a better option via the excess of options you have access to with that kind of money.
Overall I just feel very anxious about this change, especially knowing we're currently set on the path for engagement. I'd like to talk about this with him but am hoping for advice so I can approach it in a healthy manner and don't come off as insecure or envious of his achievements.
TLDR; Bf is suddenly rich and I'm nervous about how it will affect our relationship. Looking for perspective and general advice on navigating this.

Your career in business administration may be boosted by it. Simply put, teamwork is cooperating with your teammates to accomplish a common objective. It entails assembling a variety of people with various experiences and specialities and putting them in settings where they are free to be heard by their group and collaborate with their teams. Individual differences contribute to more effective and comprehensive solutions to current problems. Teams share duties, typically with a leader at the helm, make choices together, work together on ideas, and successfully communicate to achieve their objectives. 2023.03.30 19:18 LDP_Weather3 10 years later- The Naming Ceremony
Once Upon A Time,
There was a princess with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as dark as night. That little princess was currently staring up at her grandmother, who once bore the same description.
"You don't have to wear anything you don't want to, sweetheart," said Evelyn as she conjured a dress from the toddler's closet. "Here, Sylvia, you can match Granny instead." She took the frilly pink dress from her granddaughter, and handed her a dark purple velvet dress that perfectly matched her own.
The scowl on Princess Sylvia's face remained fixed as she put on the new dress. Queen Evelyn sighed, "Fine, but if I hear of any trouble from you, I will be taking it back." Around the girls neck appeared her favorite dragon hide cloak, which had been confiscated a day earlier when Princess Sylvia got caught trying to smash the tea set her mother made on the night before her wedding.
"Thank you, Granny! I promise I'll be good!", the little princess said with a smile and she ran off to cause more mischief. Queen Evelyn watched her granddaughter with a loving smile before turning to her magic mirror. Before she opened her mouth, they appeared in front of her.
"I have already alerted the staff that Princess Sylvia is on the loose and to alert me immediately if she finds a weapon or starts a fire or tries to sell one of the babies again," said Mirror.
"Thank you, darling. I don't know how we would survive without you. Now, what of my newest grandchildren. Did Harold and Rapunzel finally settle on names?" She asked.
It had been a subject of much debate during both pregnancies. Princess Rapunzel was still insistent that one of her children be named after Elaine, who was remembered by most of the nine kingdoms for the brutal murder of her father, the Prince Consort, ten years prior. Queen Evelyn and King Tiberius had been able to persuade Rapunzel to drop the name 3 years prior by convincing her that the girl should be named in honor of her grandmothers instead. She had thought they were in the clear with this second child after the midwife declared Rapunzel had given birth to a little prince, but 5 minutes later, a little princess was born as well. As delighted as they were for the blessing of twins, the King and Queen of the now combined kingdoms Jeffersonia and Cresidia were worried about the optics of their youngest grandchild being named after someone who was associated with a high profile murder.
Mirror saw the worry on her face, "We are in the clear, your majesty. They will be named Prince Elias Harold and Princess Lillian Rose."
Queen Evelyn smiled. "Perfect names for perfect children." She smoothed her dress one more time, "How do I look? Can you tell I'm a grandmother of six?"
"Of course not, my queen," Mirror said without lying. "Did you have a touch up this morning?"
"Oh yes, Rapunzel is so busy with the little ones that she no longer hesitates when I offer to brush her hair."
There was a knock at the door and Bashful poked his head in. "Sorry to interrupt, your majesty, but Princess Anastasia and Sir Thomas have just arrived. She is already complaining that she is too far along to help with the children and Sir Thomas is having trouble wrangling their other children."
Queen Evelyn rolled her eyes. Anastasia had only felt the quickening of her third child with Sir Thomas the week before. Even for Anastasia, this was much too early for her dramatics. "Tell Anastasia to retire to the sitting room and have Sleepy and Dopey take over with the children. Sir Thomas is godfather and has duties to carry out today. I'll be right down to start the Ceremony."
Just then, there was a loud bang from the courtyard. Mirror only got out a "Your Majesty" before Evelyn stopped them.
"I already suspected that was linked to Princess Sylvia. Sir Scottford is around today, I should have known better than to let her go unattended."
And with that, Queen Evelyn swept out of the room to divert anymore trouble from ruining her important day.

2023.03.30 19:17 Plllar_MT Welcome to Impact Consumption
Investopedia defines
impact investing as
a general investment strategy that seeks to generate financial returns while also creating a positive social or environmental impact. Investors who follow impact investing consider a company's commitment to corporate social responsibility or the duty to positively serve society as a whole.
The size of the global impact investment market measured in assets under management (AUM) is
estimated to be greater than $1 trillion. That massive sum of investment dollars is a powerful force to influence corporate behavior.
However,
an even more powerful force is the amount of money we spend on stuff. In 2023
US consumers will spend on the order of $14 TRILLION dollars on goods and services. Every time we spend money on goods or services we support, explicitly or implicitly, the companies that produced those goods and services.
Impact consumption is a general consumer strategy that seeks to engage in the consumer economy while also creating a positive social or environmental impact. Consumers who follow impact consumption consider a company's commitment to corporate social responsibility or the duty to positively serve society as a whole.
impact_consumption is a place for people to share examples, case studies and research, and to discuss pragmatic solutions and immediate actions that consumers can take to use their purchasing power for positive social and environmental impact.

Our backyard in the Hollywood Hills (Los Angeles) came with a ~40ft tall pine tree when we moved in 20yrs ago. Not really sure of the variant but it's a sturdy-looking old tree, probably from when T-Rex roamed the planet. Sadly, we recently noticed almost all the "leaves" are brown and it stands on a sloped piece of land. With homes on either side and a sidewalk, we (very sadly) decided to get it cut down. We suspect a wile vine that has coated the entire hillside and was growing up on the tree killed it. We are working on de-vining.
- What can we plant instead? We have a vegetable garden, ornamental flowering plants/shrubs/trees, some citrus fruits and berries growing. Preferably, we would like to get a young tree that will grow up over time but the sloped land is risky and transplanting a mature tree will cost us a pretty penny.
- Any ideas on what we can do with a massive downed tree? It's stayed in the yard for so long and we're a bit attached to just throw/give it away. We have considered using the wood to make everything from souvenirs at family gatherings to tables and bird houses (spring is fantastic with so many birds & species in our yard). However, I suspect it will cost a bit and take up room to store wood.

2023.03.30 19:16 insaneinthebrine Milk-kefir-leavened bread. Swipe for more
| Morning breakfast of toast and butter... Bread leavened with milk kefir (no sourdough starter). If you have kefir grains but no sourdough starter, or if you have both and are just looking to switch things up, it makes a very good bread. Previously I only did rye bread this way and this one was a test recipe; almost perfect, next time I think with some honey. The yeast in milk kefir is close to that of sourdough and does the same job; however in my experience it takes longer and does well at elevated temps around 85 or even 90 (using a proofing mat). This was a white bread: •400g completed milk kefir (stirred the milk kefir back into a uniform liquid as soon as the curds and whey fully separated, and incorporated into the dough right away) •500g organic bread flour •50g whole wheat flour •3 tsp diastatic malt powder (10g) optional but I believe for milk kefir bread improves the rise •13g salt •Up to around a TBSP extra milk kefir added at the end of mixing to ensure any excess flour at the bottom was incorporated 1.) I did 4 sets of stretch and folds over a couple hours. The dough feels more dense and taught than regular sourdough, won't be a problem. 2.) Sat out with a damp cloth covering the bowl for around 4 hours 3.) Shaped and placed into floured 9" banneton, covered, refrigerated for around 14 hours 4.) Took another 4 hours on a heat mat 85-90°F 5.) Final shaping, scored, baked in a covered dutch oven at 485 for 20 minutes. (Was preheated at 500 for an hour.) Removed steam pan, another 465 for around 20 minutes. malt powder: https://amzn.to/40zXFi banneton: https://amzn.to/3G3cuBQ milk kefir grains: https://amzn.to/3TTl9N1 submitted by insaneinthebrine to Sourdough [link] [comments] |
