Gen-Z Graduates Stare Down Their First Student Loan Payments

• Three years after the pandemic-era freeze was introduced, millions of recent graduates have yet to see a student loan bill.

Millions of students graduated during the pandemic with student debt. They have yet to make a single payment.
The moratorium on federal student loan payments, which began three years ago this month, has given recent graduates the financial freedom to pay down debt, boost their credit scores and simply cover everyday expenses at a time of high inflation and economic uncertainty. All that is set to change soon, with payments scheduled to resume later this year.
The restart is likely to be a jolt for nearly everyone with federal student loans (private loans weren’t part of the pause), but perhaps no cohort will feel it quite like Generation Freeze, which has never had to budget for it. That’s likely to slow consumer spending and hurt the economy, according to a recent report from financial services firm Jefferies.“
The loans being paused was great because I paid the minimum for my private loans and that was it,” said Alix Chronister, a 24-year-old in Kansas City, Missouri. “If I had had to pay on my federal loans, my financial situation would have been a lot more stressful.”

End of an Era

The first 60-day repayment pause was issued by President Donald Trump on March 20, 2020, when the onset of the pandemic sent the economy into a tailspin. Three years, multiple extensions and one presidential administration later, the freeze is still in place and about 11 million people have since completed undergraduate degrees. Of those, an estimated 70% leave college with student debt.
But the freeze era is drawing to a close. President Joe Biden said in late November that payments will resume 60 days after the Supreme Court rules on his one-time forgiveness program or June 30, whichever comes first. That puts the restart date at no later than Aug. 29, and the first monthly installment would be due by the end of September.
For Chronister, that means a big financial adjustment is coming. She graduated in 2021 with $38,000 in private and federal loans and currently works as a chemist in a research facility. She has prioritized paying off the private loans, which make up $8,000 of her total balance.
The freeze was particularly useful because she was making $15 an hour at her first post-collegiate job, amounting to about $30,000 a year.
She’s eligible for $20,000 in forgiveness if the Supreme Court rules in favor of Biden’s plan — but she’s not holding her breath.“I think I’m really lucky to have had the pause, and it definitely benefited me and people who graduated around the same time,” she said. “We’ve had a chance to get our careers situated before worrying about paying.”
The average monthly payment before the pandemic pause was $393, according to the Federal Reserve. About 20 million borrowers were actively paying down their debt, while others were in default or had their payments deferred due to hardship or forbearance.
Depending on a borrower’s personal financial situation, the return of student loan bills won’t be like flicking an immediate “on” switch. Travis Hornsby, founder of financial service website Student Loan Planner, can see a case where some borrowers might not be expected to pay for another year or two based on their income. New rules for income-driven repayment plans would also widen the net for those who may qualify for a $0 monthly bill, and cap payments at no more than 5% of discretionary income for others.“
Compared to what payments used to be, a lot of people are going to be very much eased into repayment,” said Hornsby. That would help not only fresh college grads, but single parents and others who were previously at risk of default. “The freeze is sort of being thawed.”

Looming Bills

The freeze means many recent graduates have never had to factor federal student loan repayments into their monthly budgets, a helpful absence as prices rise for everything from eggs to rent. In a recent survey by personal-finance company Credit Karma , 26% of borrowers said they hadn’t saved any money during the freeze because they were prioritizing everyday expenses. Almost 70% said their financial situation was stagnant or declined in 2022.
For Madison Sasser in Tampa, Florida, the freeze gave her time to figure out her career trajectory without having to worry about an additional monthly bill. The 24-year-old graduated from the University of South Florida in December 2020 with $15,000 in student debt.
She initially wanted to go to law school but decided it was too expensive. Now, she’s working on building a career as a writer while waiting tables at a restaurant during the day, and makes about $38,000 a year.
The return of monthly payments is going to significantly strain her budget, she said, especially due to the high rents in Tampa.
The average starting salary for a member of the class of 2021 is $55,911, according to a July 2022 analysis by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. For young people who live in big cities and lack the financial and career flexibility to move to places with lower costs of living, those early salaries may not stretch very far.
Matthew Sánchez, a 23-year-old compliance officer who lives in Long Island, New York, says having to repay his loans will be stressful.
“For me personally, I can probably make do and adjust,” he said, though he expects he’ll have to delay a move to Maryland, which he’s trying to plan because it’s more affordable.
He’s bracing for a monthly payment of $300 on $27,000 in federal loans. He knows he’s on the luckier side: “I’m always thinking about how this affects my demographic, broadly speaking. I can see the frustration people have.”

I took out a car loan in Sept 2014. In July 2018 the credit union underwent a huge change, changed names, redesigned the app, etc. I believed my payments were still being deducted through autopay and the app was showing that they were being made. I guess the autopay didn’t transfer over when the CU underwent the changes. Regardless, it was my fault for not ensuring that the funds were actually being deducted.
Thus, my car was repossessed in March 2019. The first date of delinquency was August 2018 (right after the change). The CU allowed me to pay the ~$3,000 in arrears for the missed payments, allowed the repo to release my vehicle back to me, and reinstated the loan for the remaining balance of ~$1,200 to be paid monthly from April 2019 - September 2019 (which I did without issue).
My question: my Experian report shows the months of April - August 2019 as CO (charge off), with the final payment in September 2019 as a green check mark, or ‘paid on time’. Am I able to dispute the months of April - August since the loan was reinstated and I successfully made the monthly payments on time? Would it even matter at this point?

How to spot shady Clans and Practices
This section here is intended as a “Harm Reduction FAQ” with a few guidelines on how to spot shady Clans and Practices to avoid getting scammed.
A List of Shady Practices that one may encounters in dubious Clans

• The offering of a services/items/geaetc. in exchange for real monetary / payment is a major red flag.
• Paying for Level Boosts and other services that promise quick progression in exchange for payment - legitimate clans don’t charge for helping their clan members level up.
• Paying for a specific Legendary Item, especially when asked to pay for Legendries that did not already dropped or that dropped while you where not there – Legendries can only be traded in-game for the first 2 hours after they dropped and only with those players that were in the group when the Legendary dropped.
• Being asked or pressured into sharing your Blizzard Account Password, even when the request seemingly comes from an Official Blizzard Account or Employee. Blizzard Employees will never ask for your password.
• (Being groomed or pressured into) paying for a Higher Status or Position within the group / clan, (e.g. like being Moderator of the Clans discord, Facebook group, Lieutenant of a Clan, etc.) and/or having to pay for keeping that status / position.

Scams and Shady Practices to be aware of in General

• Everything that requires sharing of personal information, especially credit card numbers, or social security numbers (even if something is offered in return "for free")
• Advertisements for buying T-Shirts, Mugs, etc related to various franchises (not just Diablo), from ads that may pop up, either in the in-game Chat, discord or even reddit, These are scams designed to get your Credit Card Information. ( link to reddit thread that explains the scam <--)
• Suspicious links and downloads from there, as some downloads may include malware

If something like this occurs, especially if your are being pressured into doing one of these things (even if the person is appearing as a Blizzard Employee or portrays himself to be a Federal Official), it is best to just leave and to not argue, as scammers will likely just continue to pressure or trick you.

A: Yes, expect them at the end of every volume for the time being. And will they be going anywhere? Yes, they already have, as you can see from chap 151.

A: Agreed. We saw a lot from Kal's father recently, but his brother and mother are lacking. We are going to see Kal's mother's side more soon. As for Dallin, he is in a weird place for me right now as a character. He is too young to fight or train or really "Hang out" with Kaladain. But I have plans for him later (especially when Mila goes to school). I'll try to develop the family as time moves on.
Q: Lin has just as much potential to grow as a person as Kaladin, and putting her into the background spy type of character would be a waste.
A: Agreed again. Lin isn't going anywhere, and she is here to stay. It's much the same with the princesses. They kinda got left out in the middle/end of Vol.6, which sucked but don't worry, they ain't going nowhere.
Q: You've built an amazing foundation for character development, and I think it would elevate your story to push character growth. You have enough characters that making our interactions with them revolve around Kaladin feels very busy.
A: Mmmm...yes and no. This is a first-person story that is about Kaladin. Always has been and always will be. Seeing the characters change should be mainly through the eyes of Kaladin. Going off and say...following Adria for a few chapters for no reason or just to show her character isn't my style or the goal of this story. I'd only really do that for the main characters like say, Sylvia, if she got separated or something. However, I agree that some characters have been at a standstill for some time, characters like Tsarra, Ren, Lauren, and Varnir. We will see some development of them in the coming volumes.
Q: Will we get long time skips (more than 5 years) in the main story?
A: Not that long of a time will be skipped as of right now. However, we shall see some months get cut here and there. Volume 7 will actually start in late winter, almost spring time :) as Vol.6 ended in the dead of winter.
Q: Will Sir Kaladin get more creative with their magic (use earth to build something, test if it can make metals, test if plasma can be use as welding) and then teach people on how to use them creatively (since Bowen isn't doing it)?
A: Yeah, I think so, but probably not in the way you are suggesting. (Kal welding? Why? Idk.) I think Kaladin has already got more creative with his magic. I mean, just look at him in Vol.1 compared to now. He hasn't only gotten "stronger" or "more magic," I think he is far more creative now than he was, which was a big problem for him.

A: And soon. And yes, I know polearms include spears; I just don't like that name. It's a spear, he uses a spear, and I won't hear any complaints.

A: Almost nothing, tbh. Maybe a bit but that's it. Is that weird? Idk I don't feel like it is. I don't think self-inserting myself into say, Kalaidn would make sense as we have nothing in common. Actually, I take that back. Working out is my self inserting. I wish I was a tall, handsome dark elf with massive muscles. Life is unfair. Maybe I'll get reborn into my own fantasy world one day?

A: A lot of characters you are fond of have a high chance of being a real person that I know. (I put them in the story with their permission ofc.)
Q: How do you keep track of the world and the story?
A: All in my head. Seriously, that's how I do it.
Q: Do you feel that the MC has become more reactive than proactive?
A: Great question. Yes, he has, which makes sense. His goals/position have changed. Vol 2-4/5ish, he was going after his family but not anymore. So if he's not actively going out, then it makes sense for things to come to him, right? But don't worry. This state won't last forever. Proactive Kaladin will show some signs in Vol.7.
Q: It feels like this volume had no overall story at all and could easily just be skipped, as there did not seem to be a start, middle, and end.
A: I...I don't even know what to say to this. Did you read the story I wrote? I don't even mean that in a negative way. I'm just curious because I read this and thought it was a troll...which I hope it is. Vol.6 was...so essential. Skipping it would be like skipping the entire culmination of the first half of the story. You would just have to start reading vol.7 after the prologue. Going over why Vol.6 is important would take too long...and as for a beggning=Kal being knighted, revealing himself to the world, middle=family reunion, the fallout with all that drama, end=Kal's birthday and his journey/dark elf business.
Q: How much has the present state of "Deathworld Commando" veered from your original ideas/plot when you first started?
A: Mmmm....not much. This is how I imagined things in august of 2021, at least for the major events, that is. The journey...has been a bit different, though, I guess. Best example? I didn't expect the Dem fight to write out like I thought it did. But I think it turned out 100x better.

A: Changing the story? No. Helpful in gauging reactions? Yes. Is it changing how I do things outside the story? Yes.
Q: Final thought- I don't hate the name of your story, since I found it on HFY, but I feel that if you ever turn it into a book, you may reach a wider audience with a different name. Even just dropping "Deathworld" since that feels pretty specific to HFY.
A: Some food for thought right there. I've had the same idea. But does dropping the "world" in Deathworld really change all that much? I don't think it does. If anything, it might make it more special. And since HFY was my origin site, I think drawing more people to it would be cool.
Q: How much of your fanbase do you expect to lose if Kaladin starts hoeing around in a polyamorous relationship?
A: Sassy. And if Kal started hoeing around? All of them because that would mean I've been killed and replaced by my FBI agent or the CIA. But polyamorous relations aren't hoeing around. So if you left for that, then it is what it is. Especially since it's not even confirmed one way or another.
Q: Which Volume has been your favorite to write?
A: Mmmm...Vol.1 was fun, and so was 6. I also liked 4.
Q: Which reveal did you like best?
A: Ooooo...idk that's hard. Either when Kal revealed his face in Luminar or to Dem and his squad before he murked them. Also, the family reunion was good as well.
Q: I hope the next vol. will not only be combat as I find combat done for 10 chapters straight rather tiering and repetitive if there's nothing to spice things up, Tournament arc especially
A: Uhhh... straight brain-dead combat for chapters on end? Probably not. But lots of fighting. I guess you will have to wait and see what I mean. There will be plenty of the story in those fights, I'm sure of it.

It’s that time of the week… Throwback Thursday. The day we reminisce on the simple times, when our biggest worry was staying on our friends' Top 8 on Myspace.
Today’s TBT: The Cyprus Banking Crisis and Bitcoin's Big Rally. Gather ‘round kids, this one’s a doozy. Here’s the story in 3 parts:
PART 1: THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM. First, let me set the scene for you:
old man voice:... The year was 2013, on a small Mediterranean island called Cyprus…
At the time, the island was known for one thing: lax taxes. This made Cyprus a tax haven for rich (and sketchy) people, which raked in billions of dollars in bank deposits.
As a result, the banks on this tiny island got HUGE. They held 8x as many assets as the entire country's GDP. The banks became like that short guy at the gym that bench presses 300 lbs - tiny but mighty.
But there was a massive storm brewing in Cyprus:
The economy was in a recession and still recovering from the '08 financial crisis. Big banks lost A LOT of money. They lent billions to Greece (whose economy was also nosediving), and then tried placing a double-or-nothing bet by buying up Greek government bonds in hopes of a bailout. They took an L & lost everything. Suddenly Cyprus banks were in a lot of trouble. And because they controlled (and lost) more money than the entire country’s GDP, they went from too big to fail → too big to save.
PART 2: THE SH*TSTORM
Pop quiz: What do you do when you’re broke and owe a lot of money? Call your rich uncle.
Which is exactly what Cyprus did. They called up their rich uncle (AKA the European Union) and asked for a $17B bailout.
But here’s the thing: sometimes your rich uncle wants to teach you a lesson. And the European Union wasn’t super happy about the price tag.
So they made a deal… The EU would give $10B, but Cyprus would have to come up with the rest on its own.
How? By taking money from its own depositors.
In March 2013, Cyprus announced its two biggest banks would shut down and all deposits over $100K would be seized, with a large portion being used for the bailout.
It sent shockwaves throughout the island. But wait, it gets crazier…
In order to stop a bank run, the Cyprus government declared a national bank holiday and closed all the banks so people couldn’t withdraw any money. (Note to self: if we ever want a new holiday, just threaten a massive bank run.)
Then when the banks opened back up, the Cyprus government placed restrictions on how much money people could withdraw (sometimes as low as $128 per day).
It was a living nightmare for the Cypriots that included longer lines than a new iPhone release…
But this was also a wake-up call for a lot of people. They could no longer fully trust the governments and big banks. They needed to find an alternative…
PART 3: THE RISE OF BITCOIN
Today, Bitcoin is the king of crypto. Companies own it. Hedge funds own it. Countries own it. Even my mom owns it.
In 2013, Bitcoin was still just “magic internet money”. It was mainly super nerds and sketchy drug dealers that owned it.
Until….the Cypriots got in on the action. With banks collapsing and people losing trust in the system, people looked to Bitcoin as an alternative asset for the first time ever.
BTC jumped 600% and was followed by the famous Bullrun of 2013 and BTC ended the year at ~$750. THE LESSONS: 10 years later there are still some big takeaways from the Cyprus Baking Seizures:
Banks can always collapse. 10 years ago it was Cyprus Banks. Today it's SVB, Credit Suisse, and Deutsche Bank. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. We've seen time after time that trusting a single bank with all your money is a bad idea. Don't do it. You gotta spread your bread around. Diversify your assets. Put some money in gold, Bitcoin, Pokemon cards, whatever you want - just make sure to always have a backup plan in case sh*t hits the fan.

Synopsis:

Garron sprinted out of the farm as soon as he heard the news. Wolfwater was under attack, and Noele was in danger. A kretus boar had appeared, tearing its way straight to the village. But it wasn’t just any ordinary kretus boar. Supposedly, it was a Void-touched kretus boar.
A [Druid] had warned him about this mutated monster— one that was apparently a friend of Noele’s family. He had been at Wolfwater with the blonde girl when the monster appeared. But he wasn’t strong enough to help her out, so he quickly returned to Nolan and Nicole to warn them and protect them.
But Garron was the Steel Tank. He was a B-ranked adventurer on the cusp of Level 50. While he wasn’t nearly as strong as Noele, he believed he would be able to help her out. So despite Dorien’s protests, he rushed to join her in battle. He carried his large shield, unsheathing his short sword as he whispered to himself.
“Wait for me,” he said as the ground shook from the explosions in the distance.
He saw the purple blasts. Garron had only seen the power of the Void twice before, and both times, it had been over the course of the last month. First in Whiteridge, then in Wolfwater. And now, it was in Wolfwater again.
The Steel Tank understood quite clearly that something was amiss, but he was too concerned for Noele to speculate on what could be the reason for their sudden appearances. Seeing Noele in combat against the Cloying Witch, he knew she could handle herself. But in the off chance that she couldn’t deal with the kretus boar alone—
And a powerful shockwave rippled out from Wolfwater. The nearby trees bent with the wind, half of the leaves flying off from the sheer force of the impact. Garron was knocked back, nearly stumbling off balance as a golden light flashed in the distance.
His eyes widened, and he looked up. A golden cross cut across the sky far from the village. It shone brightly, engulfing even the sun and dispersing the gathered white clouds overhead. Garron gaped for a moment at this explosion.
He recognized this magic. He saw the gold light. And he tried to work his jaw.
“That’s… Noele?”

Noele watched as the golden cross dissipated from the sky. [Dance with Death] remained active, even as the battle came to an end. A charred chunk of flesh dropped from the sky, and her eyes narrowed. [Flash Step] carried her a hundred feet forward. She appeared right before a crater, eyeing the blackened remains of the kretus boar.
She frowned. The Noble Spellsword remembered the last two times she had fought a Void-blessed being. And each time, simply killing them once wasn’t enough to win. They always came back. So she waited warily as she raised her two blades.
The charred flesh of the kretus boar shifted. Her eyes narrowed, and her twin blades were coated with a golden aura once more. She readied a Glorious Noble Slash to finish the job, when the remains of the monster jerked.
Noele backed up as black appendages shot out with a crunch. But it didn’t get anywhere close to her. She blinked, watching as tiny little nubs poked out of the burnt remains of the kretus boar.
“What is going on?” She frowned, watching as the monster tried and failed to regenerate.
Its face began to reform, before distorting and melting away. For a split second, the Noble Spellsword feared that the charred kretus boar was going to twist into a rift just like when she had defeated Odell. But it only let out a weak groan.
She blinked. The dying monster’s began to shrivel up as it stared at her with a pair of flickering violet eyes. The light in its pupils dimmed into a weak crimson glow as it raised a weak limb, before flopping over to the side. Even still, it glared up at her as its body began to fade into ashes.
And she saw the anger in its eyes. The hatred it bore towards her. Noele bowed her head low. It had sought vengeance against her only because she had killed one of its kin. Noele thought of her sister for the briefest of moments.
But it wasn’t the same. The kretus boars were threatening passing travelers because their homes had been destroyed. And that was only because of the actions of the Miststorm Riders.
“I am sorry,” she whispered as the monster continued glaring up at her. “For what Odell has done to you, I can only apologize.”
The kretus boar beat its thin hooves against the ground one last time. And with a weak roar, the rest of its body turned to dust, fading away before her very eyes. Noele could only watch as the ash was scattered with the wind.
[You have defeated a kretus boar!]
The first notification flashed before her, but she didn’t react because she had anticipated it. However, the second one appeared, and she blinked.
[You have defeated a Void-blessed being!]
[You have leveled up! You are now Level 56!]
Noele stared at the hovering blue screens in shock. Firstly, she didn’t expect to level up from killing the kretus boar. Considering that she had leveled up very recently, and she hadn’t done much other than killing a few low-leveled monsters and defeating the Cloying Witch since then, she would have thought that her next level up would be a while from now. But she was already Level 56. And she even gained a brand new Skill.

But the Noble Spellsword found herself more puzzled by the other blue screen. An individual notification from the World System announced she had defeated a Void-blessed being. When she had defeated a Cloying Witch, Noele hadn’t received such a message. Not only that, she had been under the impression that the kretus boar had been Void-touched.
“What is… Void-blessed?” she asked, her brows furrowed.
She didn’t get an answer. Instead, a panting voice called out to her as she raised her head.
“Noele!” a burly man yelled, dashing her way. “Are you alright? What happened? What… that’s…”
Noele watched as Garron the Steel Tank slowly came to a halt before her. He had his sword drawn and his shield raised, prepared for battle. But the battle was already over. And it seemed he could tell as much. He glanced down at the crater, before looking back at the blonde girl with a chuckle.
“A [Druid] told me that you were in trouble,” Garron said. “But it appears that my help is not needed at all.”
“Oh, that’s Dorien.” Noele blinked. She shook her head and waved a hand off dismissively. “He’s an old family friend— but how’s my parents? Are they safe?”
The Steel Tank nodded reassuringly. “They’re fine. They’re more worried about you… even if they have no reason to.”
Noele just smiled as Garron smirked at her. He sheathed his sword and folded his arms across his chest, looking back down at the ashen remains of the kretus boar. She lightly punched his side, taking a step back.
“Don’t pretend you weren’t just worrying over me a minute ago as well,” the Noble Spellsword said.
He harrumphed with a grin. “I was concerned. But now I realize I am just a fool. This is the third Void-touched creature you’ve killed, is it not?”
She didn’t give an immediate answer. Instead, she paused, remembering what the World System had called the kretus boar. It had been Void-blessed, not Void-touched. She wondered what was the difference between the two. Noele finally shrugged.
“I don’t know. I’m just glad to see that you actually do care about me.” She glanced away from the burly man, smiling, before looking back towards Wolfwater. “But we have quite a mess to clean up.”
Garron pursed his lips. He nodded grimly as he swept his gaze over his surroundings, taking in the full scene for the first time since he got here.
“Were there any casualties?” he asked.
“There were none. But the damage the boar caused is…” the blonde girl trailed off as she eyed the various craters dotting the landscape.
The nearby vegetation and flora had been uprooted, and the localized tremor caused by the kretus boar ripped open a few small crevices throughout the farmland. The damage was rather significant for the size of the village.
“And so soon after the Cloying Witch’s attack?” Noele sighed as she strode back towards Wolfwater. “This can’t keep happening.”
“It can’t,” Garron said, following after her. “We need to figure out a way to stop these attacks.”
She nodded as she eyed the crowd gathered in the distance. “Right… but for now, let’s check up on the restaurant…”

“Amelia seemed pretty excited for her restaurant’s grand opening. I hope this attack does not ruin her plans for today.”
“I hope not. She might quit cooking altogether if that happens.”
“I do not know her as well as you do, but I think you should give your mentor a little more credit than that.”
“I am saying this because I know her—”
Guardian Angel Z357 watched the two humans slowly make their way back towards the ramshackle building at the edge of the village. A crowd of other humans waited there, and there was even an otherworlder amongst them. But his gaze was fixed only on a single figure.
Noele. That was her name, according to the human man. She had been the one to defeat the Void-blessed kretus boar— which was already an extraordinary feat for this era.
But that normally wasn’t enough to pique Guardian Angel Z357’s interest. It was the method in which she employed to win the battle which drew his attention towards her. She had been able to draw from a power beyond the World System. The magic which she used… it had reminded him of one of his own Techniques.
There was a slight difference to it which he couldn’t quite discern. There was no uniformity in her abilities. That puzzled him. And the fact that she had apparently defeated three Void-influenced beings so far drew him to her even more.
He needed to know more.
Guardian Angel Z357 knew that it was against his current objective, but he acted under his own prerogative, believing that there was more he could learn here by interrogating the blonde human instead of speaking to those useless cult members he’d encountered so far.
He deactivated Without a Trace as he descended upon the two humans. His sudden appearance out of thin air instantly attracted the attention of a handful of the nearby humans. They pointed and gasped at the angel as he approached his target.
Noele blinked, noticing the susurration, before turning around. Her eyes went round when she saw the twelve eyes staring back at her. At first, she tensed, reaching for her two blades. But then her gaze drifted to the feathery wings as her breath was caught in her throat.
“Is that… an angel…?” she asked softly.
Be not afraid, he transmitted his thoughts to the crowd of humans.
And the burly man froze. The onlookers dropped to their knees as Noele just looked on in both awe and wonder. Guardian Angel Z357 continued to slowly float down, before extending an unassuming hand.
Come with me, Noble Spellsword, he said telepathically. I am in need of an audience with you.
“An audience with me?” She blinked a few times. Her companion just gaped as those who watched buzzed in shock and excitement.
“An audience with an angel?”
“Is this real life?”
“Angel’s breath… I never thought I’d ever see one until I died…”
Guardian Angel Z357 landed right before the blonde human, taking a step forward as he kept his hand proffered. His twelve eyes blinked simultaneously, and she raised her own hand in a daze.
“I—” Noele started.
But she hesitated. For whatever reason, she shifted back uncomfortably, shrinking away from the angel. He tilted his head, puzzled by her odd behavior. Most of the denizens of Planet 16B would be beyond ecstatic to communicate with him. And yet, here she was, taken by apprehension from his presence alone.
Let us speak, Noble Spellsword, Guardian Angel Z357 pressed her as he called her by her Title. It is a matter of great importance.
She just chewed her lower lip hesitantly. His twelve eyes narrowed. No matter. It didn’t matter if she didn’t want to speak. He would make her talk by force if necessary. He reached for the blonde human as she blinked.
And a hand caught his outstretched palm.
Guardian Angel Z357’s twelve eyes flickered in surprise. His gaze snapped to the side, staring at a brown-haired human. He hadn’t even seen her coming, and she was somehow tightly clutching his arm in place
Who are you? he asked, taken aback by this sudden intruder.
He hadn’t even noticed her presence. And she didn’t seem to care that he was an angel either. She just stepped in front of the blonde human, blocking Guardian Angel Z357 from reaching his target.
“I’m Amelia,” she said simply. “Now tell me— what do you want with my apprentice?”

My name is Steven Toth and I am a former LEO lecturer in the department of Chemistry at UM Flint. When I started at UM Dearborn and UM Flint in 2015, I was making $28,000 teaching full time. By the time I left UM in the Summer or 2022 I was making $43000 teaching full time. This is a very large increase- over 60%! Don't take my word for it- my salary info is public and can be seen here:

I can owe this increase in salary to the LEO union that I was a proud member of during my time at UM. During contract negotiations, LEO made salaries a priority and levied an incredible strike threat to force the administration to increase our salaries. During the time of the most recent LEO negotiations, I was the chair of the LEO union at UM Flint and a member of the strike team- the group created to put pressure on the administration in the form of public actions. We organized a lot during this period and really had strong shows of public unity and strength. Members of other unions- including GEO!- came out and support LEO in a huge way, and the administration caved into our biggest demand: Pay parity for lecturers across all three campuses. That's right, starting in 2023, all three campuses will have the same starting salary for lecturers, which is $51000 (a HUGE increase from my starting salary at UM Dearborn of $28000). This win was incredible. I remember when I first started HR said that UM Flint and UM Dearborn lecturers would never be paid the same at UM Ann Arbor Lecs! However, LEO organized, had a lot of help for its allies, and really forced UM to increase salaries to a fair and equitiable wage. If you would've told me that as a lecturer in 2015 that my salary would effectively double by 2023 I would not have believed you. That, however is the power of the union and collective action.

You will always get what you are willing to fight for.

I am so grateful to the LEO Union members for always fighting for me and fighting for a salary that truly made me a better teacher. As my salary increased, my stress decreased, I could quit my second job(s), and I could get reliable transportation. I literally would teach a 200 person Gen Chem class and then go to Barnes & Noble and work as a supervisor. I am so grateful for the other Union members like GEO who supported LEO during these events as well. I support GEO and their strike and I hope they send a strong message to the administration.

PS: I am now a "lecturer equivalent" at Washtenaw Community College. Again, since you can look up my salary I will just tell you- it's $84000. The Univeristy of Michigan has the third largest endownment of any public college at 17.3 billion dollars. The endownment at Washtenaw Community College is significantly less at 20 million dollars. Tuition at WCC is also significantly less per credit hour. If you believe the story that "there just is no money at UM and that's why the salaries have to be so low" you are buying right into the administration's narrative.

PPS: My time at UM was an absolute joy. I loved it, and I loved the students. I taught at all three campuses. This was truly one of the happiest times of my life. I also think I did a good job and had a pretty good reputation, but that is certainly up to the students and not to me. The only reason I left UM was because of the WCC salary offer. I get that "money isn't everything" or whatever but it sure does help. If UM could've matched my WCC salary I may still be there. Good salaries retain top talent. GEO is fighting to make a better campus atmosphere for all students.

another fucking semester went by, another semester of egoistic groups who thinks they should have ALL the fucking creative control, and force me to do basic grunt work. So that they can put these projects on their portfolios and leave me to the fucking dust. It's been a thing for 3 years, the exact same thing, over and over.
From IAT 106 and IAT 235 where this same bitch just throw out my ideas and force me to work on theirs, won't even allowing me to make my own adjustment to her idea. every single major and minor suggestions I made the entire group gang up on me to fight me over ruining their "perfect" idea and that my ideas don't make sense, guess what, your stupid red hair and its stupid hairstyle is the thing that makes no sense.
IAT 202 where all my inputs on shot composition and story are thrown out in favor of a single person's idea which is fucking bad, I was so fucking looking forward to IAT 202, making films is like my childhood dream, i wanted to make the best film ever using my own ideas, my asshole group members ruined it, instead im treated like a minimum wage worker that is holding the camera and boom mic instead of the one making shot lists. I wasn't even allowed to edit the film when I got 38.5/40 for the first project, while they got only fucking 30.
to IAT 233 where group members force me to make 3d models and a showcase video of their own fucking idea for a pavilion like I am a for hire animator. They wouldn't even put my initial sketches of our own ideas on the presentation or the website. Im supposed to be designing buildings in this course, instead all Ive done all semester is getting assigned the lowly labour like gluing cardboard because of 6 entitled fuckfaces spanning 4 projects who won't let me contribute creatively.
to IAT 222 where no one even considers my idea for a art project, instead throwing all the programming work to me like some grunt as if I love programming when I quit CS for a fucking reason. At least for this project I get to sabotage it somewhat and make it bad on purpose since I'm doing all the programming work while they sit around just drawing things.. And guess what Mr.M___a_l _a_g, your ideas fucking sucked like I told you, I told you in your face that you are a fucking dumbass, and I was right. We got a 55%. Had you guys done my idea it's practically a A- guaranteed.
Now in the 3 IAT classes Im taking this semester, the same thing happen fucking again, i don't understand why IAT is full of dumbass control freaks who don't understand group projects and group projects and they are not fucking entitled to all the creative input. Just looking at other people portfolio pisses me off, that fancy walkthrough video of your architecture 3D model, I. FUCKING. MADE. IT. Both the 3d model and the animation and the editing are done by me. I purchased a condo in Summer 2020, which is the first and only property I've owned. My real estate agent (or maybe mortgage broker, I don't remember) recommended several insurance options, and I went with the one that was by far the cheapest (through Goosehead Insurance), which I've kept ever since.
I've generally been unhappy with their customer service, so when I recently got a new car, I used my credit union's insurance services to get quotes for car insurance, and went ahead and also got quotes for condo insurance to see if I could get a better price.
I was surprised that the rate they quoted was about 3 times as high as the rate I'm currently paying, so I carefully compared the coverage, and found that I only have $3000 per claim of Dwelling Coverage A. While my HOA covers the building itself, there's no way I could replace the flooring, drywall, plumbing, and other interior fixtures for anywhere near $3000.
It's on me for not closely comparing the quotes when I initially bought the condo, and I guess in retrospect the huge difference in price between the one I bought and the other options should have been a red flag. But I'm kind of shocked that they would even offer such insufficient coverage, and I'm very relieved I haven't needed to use it so far. Is this kind of thing normal, or did they screw up something when I first signed up?

For a few years, electric trucks were mainly being worked on by startup companies, while the large tech companies were mostly silent on the issue. This all changed around 2017. Tesla unveiled its all-electric autonomous truck in 2017 and the early customers of this product are Walmart, UPS and PepsiCo. Then, Daimler unveiled the electric siblings of their most popular trucks, Cascadia and M2 as eCascadia and eM2 in 2018. At the ACT Expo in 2018, Roger Nielson, the CEO of Daimler Trucks, said that the time has come to contemplate the post-internal combustion engine. The production of Daimler electric trucks will begin in 2021. In April 2019, the Nikola Motor Company, a tech startup unveiled its semi-truck powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Anheuser Busch, a beer making company has planned to buy 800 units of Nikola’s hydrogen fuel powered semi-truck.
Uber has also acquired a startup company, Otto which is working on autonomous trucks. In October, 2018 Otto completed the first shipment in the world from a self-driven truck. The cargo hauled by it contained 51,744 cans of Budweiser.

Any technological advancement requires large investments. According to a report from CB Insights, $2 billion has been invested in startup trucking companies as of 21st May, 2019. The investments in tech startups jumped a huge leap from $114 million in 2014 to $3.6 billion in 2018. The growing interest in the future of trucking has increased the scale of investments. The costs of electric trucks are quite higher than that of a diesel truck. Nielson went on to say that the business scenario at present will not allow a sane fleet operator to buy an electric truck. The industry needs to find ways to carry on research and make batteries that are half the current size and price. Also, it must double the energy density. In the meantime, partnerships and grants can make production of electric trucks possible.

The depletion of the conventional sources of energy have made researchers seek alternative sources to power vehicles. Thus, conservation of nature has been a driving concern behind a lof of the recent innovations.
Since trucks were first used in the late nineteenth century, they have come a long way. The future seems quite exciting as truck manufacturing companies are aiming to build electronic and autonomous trucks. Trucking had altered the way America did business and a lot is set to change in the coming years as well. With Tesla, Volvo, Daimler and other truck giants about to launch electric trucks in a few years, the future of trucking never seemed so promising and exciting.

A Brief History of Electric Trucks

The first crude yet viable electric motor which could power a tiny car was built by ÁnyosJedik, a Hungarian priest in 1827. 28% of vehicles running on American roads in 1900 was actually powered by electricity. Milburn electrics was the vehicle used by President Woodrow Wilson and his team of secret service agents to travel around Washington, DC. Once charged, the vehicle could travel a distance of approximately 60-70 miles. Though, initially electric vehicles did not have rechargeable batteries. The first electric carriage was invented somewhere around 1832-1839 in Scotland by Robert Anderson. It ran on primary cells which were non-rechargeable. The nickel-iron battery was one of the kinds of rechargeable batteries.
Of the many companies that produced and sold electrical vehicles, Baker Electric, Detroit Electric and Columbia Electric were quite notable.

Why did electric vehicles lose their prominence?

Cars powered by internal combustion became cheaper. Also large petroleum reserves were found in Oklahoma, California and Texas. Additionally, roads outside urban areas began to improve. Due to the availability of better roads, cars with internal combustion engines became a more popular choice.
In 1913, Henry Ford introduced a line of gasoline-powered vehicles. These vehicles were mass produced which lowered the price. Gasoline vehicles became more and more popular. The electrical vehicles began to lose ground, only to come back with a bang after nearly a century.

Electrical vehicles need electricity to recharge batteries. Apart from fossil fuels, this electricity can also be generated from renewable sources like solar, wind and tidal energy.

The conventional engine may leak oil. If not detected in time, this can lead to damages. Electric vehicles do not have this fear as they run on rechargeable batteries.

Regenerative braking

Regenerative braking is one of the key advantages of plug-in or hybrid electric vehicles. In a hybrid vehicle a conventional way of propulsion is often merged with an electric one. Types of Electric Vehicles available

HEV or Hybrid Electric Vehicle

PHEV or Plug-in Electric Vehicle

These vehicles use electricity for short distances. When the battery is over, the driver can switch over to the conventional combustion engine. Morgan Stanley estimates that if American trucks are made autonomous, $168 billion can be saved each year. Though, we are still many years away from full autonomous driving as of now. Autonomous driving has been set to five stages. The fifth stage is considered the most technically and mechanically advanced one:

Stage 0 – No Automation

Vehicles controlled by human drivers and without any sort of support from computerized driver assistance system is considered stage 0 or ‘No Automation’.

Stage 1 – Driver Assistance

Vehicles in ‘Driver assistance’ level or stage 1 are jointly controlled by the driver and a computerized automated system. There are a number of ways in which this system can work. A driver usually always controls the steering, while the automated system may have certain control over the brakes and speed of the vehicle when required. At times the engine power is controlled by the automated system which ensures that the vehicle can maintain a specific speed. At times parking assistance is also available with this automated system. Here, the speed of the vehicle is controlled manually while the steering is done automatically. However, the driver has to be alert and ready to take up the control if any problem arises. This type of driving is also called ‘hands on’ driving.

Stage 2 – Partly Automated Driving

In stage 2 or the ‘Partly Automated Driving’ level, the driver monitors the driving process while it is conducted by the automated system. If in any situation or condition, the automated system cannot do its job or fails to respond, the driver has to take up manual controls immediately. This stage is at times called ‘hands off’. In this stage it is mandatory for the driver to keep hands on the steering wheel at all times. This mandate is for safety purposes. Having the driver constantly holding the steering wheel means that immediate manual control of the vehicle can be taken up during any situation.

Stage 3 – Highly Automated Driving

The ‘Highly Automated Driving’ level is commonly called ‘eyes off’ level. This means that the driver is not required to constantly monitor the driving or look at the road ahead. The automated system will be able to perform on its own and without any human interference. If any problem occurs, automatically the emergency brakes are applied. Though the driver can usually do personal work while the vehicle is on the road, during adverse or critical conditions human intervention may be required. These situations will be specified by the manufacturer before-hand.

Stage 4- Fully Automated Driving

In the ‘Fully Automated Driving’ the human driver is allowed to take their ‘mind off’ in most of the situations. The driver may sleep or do other work in other part of the vehicle as the vehicle is capable to look after its own safety. This type of vehicle is capable of completing the journey and park itself. However, during traffic jams (which falls under ‘special circumstances’ category) or tight-spaced areas, the vehicle has to be operated by a human driver.

Stage 5- Full Automation

In a vehicle having ‘Full Automation’, the steering wheel is optional. Hence, it does not require any human intervention for any aspect related to driving. Through this type of vehicle, full automation is achieved.

What is our present stage in Truck automation?

Volvo’s VNL and Pleton’s Platooning System are examples of trucks that are available in the trucking market today that have Stage 1 automation. Under the Stage 2 automated truck category, the new 2020 Cascadia will be the first truck in Northern America according to Freightliner. It will begin production from July, 2019. Embark and Starsky Robotics are the two other Stage 2 automated trucks that will be available in the future but at present are in pre-commercial stage. Freightliner Inspiration and Uber Otto are trucks that fulfill the criteria of the Stage 3 automation. However, at present they are only available in prototype retrofits. The Freightliner Inspiration was the first automated truck to be licensed to operate on the highways of the country back in 2015.
At the CES electronics show in Las Vegas on 7th January, 2019, Daimler trucks announced that it will invest more than half a billion dollars and create 200 new jobs in its global endeavor to launch Stage 4 or highly automated trucks in about 10 years. The switch from Stage 2 to Stage 4 is natural and hence the step of conditional automation is being skipped as according to Daimler, conditional automation will not provide any extra advantage to the truck drivers. In the 3rd stage of automated driving, drivers can go about doing other work but have to take immediate control if the system cannot tackle the situation. The mental and physical switch from leisure to prompt action may not be as quick as required thus, it is judicious to skip the Stage 3 altogether. Additionally, Stage 4 will ensure optimal utilization of the trucks. They will be able to travel at night and avoid traffic congestion by smart route management. Future of trucking is looking very promising with autonomous vehicles.

Platooning in Trucks

Another trucking innovation in the near future is platooning. Platooning is the coupling of two or more trucks to form a convoy through the use of automated driving support system and connectivity technology. The ways in which platooning works is:

• The trucks maintain a set automatically.
• The space between the trucks is reduced when the trucks are connected to each other during certain parts of the haul. This reduction of gap between the vehicles improves the aerodynamics which in turn improves fuel efficiency.

Peloton Technology plans to commercially introduce a platooning system that is partially automated. This system at present allows two trucks to work in a close chain. Peloton technology’s PlatoonPro is already being used in fleet operation by six of its clients.
The features of Platooning system by Peloton Technology:

• In the PlatoonPro system, the driver of the rear truck steers the vehicle.
• The powertrain and brakes are controlled by the PlatoonPro system. This allows the vehicles to follow one another at a small gap.
• According to Peloton Technology, the PlatoonPro system ensures average fuel savings of 7%.
• The Automated Following system is a combination of radar-based active braking and software with vehicle-to-vehicle communication. This allows the human driver to guide the steering, acceleration and braking of the following trucks. The human driver will also be able to connect the trucks’ safety systems with little or no latency.
• According to Peloton Technology, the L4 Automated Following truck will double the freight a truck driver is able to haul in one trip.

Usefulness of platooning

Platooning is said to have a number of benefits for the future of trucking:

Improved safety

Truck platooning is said to improve the safety of the convoy as the brakes of all the trucks can be applied automatically and immediately. It has been seen that during truck platooning, automated brakes take one-fifth of the human time to analyze the road condition and apply the brakes.

Efficient performance

There can be optimal utilization of roads in the platooning system, increasing the range of the roads and avoiding traffic jams. As a consequence, goods can be delivered quickly and efficiently.

Cleaner environment

During truck platooning, the Carbon Dioxide emissions can be reduced along with fuel consumption. The air-drag friction is also considerately reduced as the trucks drive close to one another.
However, Platooning is not really as fuel-effective as it is being claimed by some. Daimler has said that during testing of the platooning system its fuel savings are less than estimated even in perfect conditions. These savings are further reduced if the platoon is disconnected and have to be accelerated again to get reconnected.

Shipper Platform: Uber Freight and Amazon Freight

Freight brokerage connects shippers with the appropriate carriers. Recently, technology is playing a role in this aspect as well with Shipper Platforms.
The Trucking business was taken by storm with the introduction of shipper platforms like Uber Freight. Shipper platforms connect shippers with small fleets hauling freight via a load-matching feature. Uber Freight launched its load-booking app in May, 2017. The main intention behind the launch of Uber Freight was automating the manual processes of shipper selection and increasing market visibility. It was also intended to relieve shippers from time consuming legal proceedings and the anxiety of getting the best possible deal. This is one of the many ways on how owner operators can find loads.
The features of Shipper Platforms and how they may impact the future of trucking:

• Carriers can book a load with just the click of a button.
• Shippers can instantly connect to a network of drivers and fleets of the Uber network and manage shipments from their office or home.
• Uber freight enables shippers to tender a load with the click of a few buttons saving time and energy.
• Transparency of quotes helps shippers know the marketplace pricing instantly. The Uber Freight’s rates are current on-going marketplace rates which are generated in real-time.
• The vast network of drivers and small fleets with Uber Freight ensures that reliable and appropriate fleets are chosen.
• Shipments can be tracked. For every major milestone, automatic notifications are sent to the shippers.
• Uber Freight’s Uber Freight Plus has a loyalty program. It gives the drivers fuel discounts, servicing discounts, and helps in the purchase of old and new trucks among other features.
• With the completion of the delivery, all the necessary documents are arranged automatically for shippers.

Uber also reported that the freight division has a network of more than 50,000 carriers and mentioned that some of the largest carriers in the country are users of the app. However, it has not been all great for Uber Freight since its launch. Uber Freight posted a loss of $64 million in the first quarter of 2020. According to CNBC, Uber Freight gives 99% of the revenue generated to the trucking companies, which leaves little room for profitability.
There may also be a few other reasons why Uber Freight has not been fully able to live up to its vision:

Rudimentary features

With the growth of GPS tracking and ELD devices, merely providing shippers the details of the truck’s location is not unique. Shippers also need to know the route the truck is taking and the HOS data.

Not so reliable in fleet and driver selection

In Uber Freight there is not a lot of barrier to sign up. All carriers do not have to provide basic requirements like an active DOT/ MC number, proper safety ratings or proof of insurance. A shipper may not feel comfortable about doing business with such carriers.

Shortage of drivers

Uber Freight provides drivers a number of perks. In spite of this, driver shortage is quite a problem. Drivers will want a steady job that ensures a good livelihood. Hence, many drivers will prefer to work with a trucking company with regular pay, rather than rely completely on Uber Freight.

Focus on shippers rather than carriers

While launching the load-booking app, the shippers’ perspective was given a lot of importance as the price transparency feature shows. However, the carriers are an integral part of the trucking business too. Apart from the loyalty program there has not been a push to ensure that carriers get steady and constant work through Uber Freight.
Uber Freight is not deterred from their path though, and mentioned recently in 2020 that their focus is still there to grow the Uber Freight business.
Amazon has also launched its own freight app, ‘Amazon Freight’. Amazon Freight was released quite quietly some time in 2016 or 2017. This app allows truck drivers to take up jobs of hauling Amazon packages in Prime-branded trailers across the country.
Fleets can sign up through the website and hauling assignments get allotted accordingly. There are a few requirements which drivers have to fulfill:

• A fleet should have at least 3 trucks.
• The trucking company should have its own DOT/MC number.

Amazon tried to use the truck drivers base and enhance its business via the Amazon Freight service. However, truckers do not see a good livelihood coming from only hauling Amazon trailers. Anecdotal evidence says that the payment is fairly low. It can be kept as an option, or can be opted as back-hauling. Doing business exclusively with Amazon Freight is said to not be fully profitable. In spite of the initial setbacks, Uber Freight and Amazon Freight are changing the future of the trucking business.
Amazon launched its freight app ‘Relay’ in 2018. It operates in 5 states—Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania. Its aim is to give truckers additional freight information. It has features like route tracking and expedited checking procedures at the warehouses. It has been designed to help truckers get faster entry and exit at the Amazon warehouses. It is Amazon’s first attempt at automating the truck delivery process.

The trucking industry in general has certain inefficiencies. Deals can take time to get finalized. The related paperwork is again, time-consuming and hectic. The trucking industry needs an open platform where shippers and carriers can view each others profile, get the selection process done in less time and get the load rolling. However, how will this be possible? The Blockchain is kindling hopes of achieving a seamless and frictionless trucking system. First, let's understand the basics of blockchain and how it can make the trucking space a community where work can get done more efficiently.

What is Blockchain?

Blockchain is an open digital ledger. It is a business network where transactions can be recorded along with tracking of assets. Blockchain technology is inherently based on cryptography, a complicated branch of mathematics. Blockchain is also decentralized. It depends on the consensus of a peer network spread across the world to function. This digital ledger is made up of a series of ‘blocks’. The blocks are the bundles of transactions which are connected together in an open ‘chain’. The data entered in the blockchain is considered to be true and valid. As being a decentralized forum, there is no single authority to verify the facts. Everyone is always on the same page. Some trucks, especially refrigerated ones, carry medical shipments. These are at times detained at customs for large periods of time. A blockchain enabled refrigerated truck-trailer made by the Swiss Tech company, SkyCell, lowered the temperature-deviated rate to less than 0.1%. For a parcel to be delivered in the same day or in 2 hours, the technology should not have any glitch. The traditional trucking technology largely relies on paperwork at every stop can not be suitable for such a fast-paced delivery. The blockchain technology with its immediate access to order tracking and authentication ensures that the delivery takes place in the required time.
At times, trucking companies order spare truck parts and also old trucks. The tracking of these spare parts or old trucks can be pretty exhausting as no proper forum is provided for constant tracking. However, the blockchain network will enable the efficient tracking of the supply chain as well.

As mentioned above consumer expectations are ever-increasing along with demands for same-day delivery and two-hour delivery. Blockchain will not only take care of the tracking of the shipments but also help in authentication.

EDI or electronic data interchange and API or application program interface leaves room for data manipulation or misinterpretation. Blockchain has the backup of the entire network to contribute information and authenticate the data. Hence, there is no scope of data tampering. Blockchain also improves the efficiency of temperature controlled and refrigerated trucking which is reliant on on-time delivery by giving data backup at every step.

IoT (The Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) enhance monitoring efficiency
