2023.03.21 16:16 Postyoulate Work in Fort Worth, friends and family in Dallas, what are some good areas halfway between that with decent bars/restaurants/nightlife?
I enjoy living in a downtown city area that has walkable bars/restaurants. I could live in Dallas or Fort Worth but am worried about the commute to see friends or to work. Hoping to find an area like the Shops of Legacy that is somewhere in Irving/Arlington/Grand Prairie and be midway between both. Las Colinas is a possible option but it seems pretty dry, lots of offices and empty restaurants around Lake Carolyn. I don’t know anybody in Fort Worth and considered living in lower greenville and commuting to fort worth for work, anybody have any idea what that drive is like on I30? would leave 7am from dallas and 4pm from fort worth. Maps say 40-45 minutes which I could do but but i’m hesitant and really looking for some wisdom or advice here.

2023.03.21 16:03 MamaFen Looking for anyone who might've served with or known my dad, Don Swearengin, 101st Pilot
My apologies in advance if this isn't the right place, but I just found it and you guys seem to be very in-depth.
Dad's been gone since 2000, of cancer, and he wasn't very open about his experience in Vietnam except that he was a Huey pilot in the 101st and that he saw considerable combat. I have bits and pieces of his memorabilia (helmet, knife, some cartoons a friend of his drew, medals) including a fist-sized piece of shrapnel that, according to my uncle, had to be removed from dad's glutes after he was shot at from below during a flight.
There are pics of me as a little girl sitting in a Huey cockpit with his headgear on, and I remember watching him shine his boots (he cheated and used his Zippo sometimes) but as far as what he did, how long he was there, he wouldn't talk about it.
He was unusually short (5'2" at his death), sandy blonde, and, IMHO, pretty damned handsome. He had CWO bars (3 blocks), captain's bars, and a gold maple leaf-looking badge that I think means he was a major at some point. Had patches/badges for signal officer, air assault, little clusters of what look like oak leaves on several of his ribbons, Humanitarian and Bronze Star medals, and a few other pieces I have yet to be able to identify. He was supposed to have been buried at Arlington, but at the last minute my stepmother decided to have him cremated and kept his ashes so I have no way of 'visiting' him or honoring his service. His younger brother, Fred, also served but I don't know if Fred went overseas or not.
I am not sure what years he served, or where, all I know is that he was very proud of his military career but wouldn't discuss it with anyone except my uncle (who was a Marine). Even my mom didn't know anything about the shrapnel.
Did anyone here know Don Swearengin, or serve with him, or even just remember him in any capacity? Even if you know of any documentation that might mention him, it would be lovely to know more about his time in the military (and thus, more about him as a person). I miss him every day and would very much like to fill in some of the gaps.

2023.03.21 15:12 Mindless-Bunch-7784 The Arlington County Trespass Tows dataset, and the sudden lack thereof
Last week I posted about the Arlington Parking Meter dataset, which is constantly updated. Continuing to poke around
data.arlingtonva.us, I see the county used to maintain a Trespass Tow dataset, keeping a record of every time a tow truck was called by a private property. It's 51,908 tows over three years.
Some quick thoughts:
- Most towed location was 3233 Columbia Pike, which is the parking lot where Glebe hits Columbia Pike. 2128 tows over 3 years, which is more than 2 a day!
- Also very high in total tows was 2930 Wilson (the bank in Clarendon on Wilson and Garfield), 1111 Army Navy Drive (the apartment building on Joyce across from the Pentagon Row shops), and 3924 and 3910 Wilson, the parking lot between Gold's Gym and &Pizza.
- Advanced Towing accounts for 32,253 total tows, almost 30 a day! A1 Towing is next with 16,883.
- There's a lot more here, but what's very strange to me is this dataset is so robust until it suddenly stops. It's every tow between 1/1/2016 and 12/31/2018. I'm curious if someone has the backstory on why 3 years of data gets collected, and then it just ends. Was it funding, was it politics, was it that the person maintaining the database got a new job? Because I'd love to see an updated dataset.
Raw source data is here
https://data.arlingtonva.us/dataset/144, and an easier view to group/filter when loaded into Gigasheet here:

2023.03.21 14:35 dylaninthebooks I don’t know if this is allowed here but I saw a listing on Facebook Marketplace and it upset me
I saw this full grown bearded dragon on Facebook Marketplace living in what appears to be a 10 gallon tank. This poor bearded dragon has nothing in the enclosure but a hammock, food, water, and some random rocks and sand on the bottom. I don’t know if the actual lizard is for sale, as it just listed the tank, but Facebook doesn’t allow you to sell animals so people usually just list the enclosure with a photo of the animal in it and hope people get the message that they’re selling the animal as well. It’s located in Arlington, Texas and I thought I would see if anybody would be willing to try and rescue this poor guy. I love animals and would love to rescue him, but I don’t have any space or supplies for a bearded dragon and my parents would never let me get another pet as we already have a ton. But I thought if I posted his situation on here, somebody could take him, at least temporarily until he finds a good home. If anybody is interested in trying to save this lizard, message me and I can show you the listing.

- Has a copyright date of 2021 or 2022.
- Addresses an issue that is related to the scholarship of WPA work (including but not limited to writing center administration, writing-across-the-curriculum administration, assessment, professional development, curricular design, labor issues, etc.).

- Makes the contribution accessible to appropriate audiences.
- Is appropriate for the broad range of contexts in which WPA work takes place.
Nominating Procedures
Send a brief letter of nomination to the committee chair, Michael J. Faris, by April 15, 2023, at [

Michael J. Faris

Lubbock, TX 79409-3091
(Note: Due to the ease of circulating the book within the committee, digital copies are preferred. The committee promises to not circulate the book beyond committee members if it is copyrighted and submitted digitally.)
In a brief letter, nominators should explain how the book meets the award requirements stated above, particularly focusing on the WPA-related issue they believe that the book addresses; how the book attends to diversity, equity, and inclusion; the gap in the scholarship of WPA work that the book takes up; and the significance of the book’s contribution to writing program administrators. Nominations not accompanied by letters that address these questions may be disqualified from consideration.
We are glad to accept nominations from authors themselves as well as faculty, staff, graduate students, and publishers. We especially welcome submissions that expand diverse points of view on WPA work and that speak from diverse perspectives.

2023.03.21 00:10 Tulrin Reasonably priced plumber? Hourly/day rates?
Hi, folks! Any recommendations for plumbers servicing Arlington, preferably with an hourly or day rate? Seems like everyone has gone flat rate only and refuses to give hourly prices, including most of the companies people have recommended here. The company I use for maintenance wanted about $5000 for labor.
If anyone's curious about the details: cutting out everything after the 1" supply line through the water heater. New main shutoff valve, PRV, heat pump water heater (replacing gas), mixing valve, expansion tank, and water filter. In a spacious utility room. It's not a tiny job, but the companies I've called have said that it's a day's work or less.
