Background

Previously my daily driver is a NoVideo NVIDIA Optimus equipped laptop (i7-6700HQ + GTX 960M), so naturally it's been a pain when trying to get that discrete GPU working properly (the proprietary driver is useless when it comes to Wayland and turning the dGPU off to save power, while Nouveau is capable of handling both of those plus reclocking its performance in graphics work is as poor as you'd expect). So, when I saw this Omen laptop having a 40% discount (bought it at almost exactly US$1000 with free shipping) I jumped on the opportunity to escape the Optimus hell.
I also happen to have a external SSD with Fedora Kinoite 37 installed, with no hardware specific tinkering (so no kernel command line changes, udev tweaks or whatever else), and prior to getting the Omen it had Mesa 22.3 and Linux 6.1.

Experience

After finding out what the boot menu key and firmware menu key was (F9 and F10 respectively) I plugged in my external SSD and picked it in the boot menu, and it booted right up to Plasma Wayland, Secure Boot and all.
WiFi just worked, so did the touchpad and keyboard backlight, as well as the volume, brightness, keyboard backlight and touchpad disable keys. Touchpad gestures also worked (at least pinch to zoom, 3 finger swipe to switch desktops, 4 finger swipe up/down). Suspend worked as I expected too, at least for the short while that I tested it (although I seem to have to press the power button like a couple of times for it to wake up, maybe just my press being too light?).
The screen started off at its native 1080p 144Hz fine, although I turned the refresh rate back down to 60Hz since I have no need for the extra frames, also no idea if FreeSync is present and/or working. Things do look a bit yellow though, not sure if it's actually the screen, some blue light filter somewhere or what.
I also installed Steam via Flatpak plus a couple of games (Skyrim Special Edition representing DX11 and Forza Horizon 4 representing DX12) for testing, FH4 in particular was especially problematic on my previous laptop (with NoVideo it just stays at the splash screen, with the iGPU it crashes when attempting to run the benchmark or enter the game proper). I added the GPU usage and temperature sensors to System Monitor (both iGPU and dGPU are present there), and started both games with Proton 7.0-6, no launch options or anything like that, and both games just WORKED, with the RX 6650M indeed doing the work in both cases.
I also tested VAAPI hardware decode via Firefox Flatpak, with VAAPI on playing a 4K video on YouTube uses about 5% CPU instead of about 10% so looks like that works.

Issues

Despite HP's logo being emblazoned in the LVFS homepage fwupdmgr update did not show that the system firmware was updatable through it. Also, the power profiles daemon does not seem to work, with powerprofilesctl reporting placeholder as the driver.
Otherwise I haven't noticed anything else of note.

TL;DR

AMD graphics being better than NoVideo NVIDIA on Linux sure did end up being true in my case.

I was managing my burnout pretty well pre-break, but I’m now coming to see that it was because I had the break on the horizon. Being off for a week was like slipping into a warm bath, and now we are back in only 3 days and I just feel completely unmotivated to participate in the work anymore. At this point, the admin has gotten off my back because they know I’m not coming back next year, but right now for me it’s just the daily struggle of trying to care when my students will do anything to not work no matter how much or how little effort I put in. It is truly soul sucking. For me, it’s having to do this in front of an audience. Having no inspiration or motivation for work that requires that all while a fresh audience filters in every 1.5 hours. I think what I’m looking forward to most with a different job is just having privacy for my feelings. If I feel unmotivated in another job, that’s sad, but at least my emotional numbness isn’t broadcasted to 100 teenagers a day.

Luna is also very interesting in the aspect that she's a shadow, a C.O., and yet doesn't crave for bloodlust/eating humans, but she also isn't the nicest person like Lyudmila too (although I'm pretty sure if she wasn't under Maestra she seems kind and playful enough) I really wonder about her backstory on how she became the Trumpeter of Elysium
It's really great on the world building that not all good C.O.s/shadows are always on our side, there are beings like Luna as well, she really doesn't want to fight - it's even mentioned in her skill description lol
Shena and Carmen kept mentioning as well that Maestra changed alot (pretty sure it's due to Revenant in her), or else should would have been alot lot MORE ruthless and coldblooded

Really great episode and felt like it's Avengers assembled moment again (wasn't anticipating it because I felt like they just did it not too long ago in the Carnival event) although this is very welcome, and pretty much is like a direct sequel to the Carnival event but tied in with other sidestories&main ones

Rivet is also dang a really popcorn-brain lol (as her skill descriptions), totally unpredictable, one moment assisting Edel, the other moment draggin Regina out (although I assume she would always side with Regina more than Edel eh) and I mean, surely she's just some normal mercenary? 1. Is the MacCready estate in the counterside? Why would Regina's lost ice powers turned into the monster "Chaser" otherwise? Since the story explained that the Counterside effects could manifest in whatever the living being inside is?

I’ve played every need for speed in the series, none have come close to the Forza Horizon series. My opinion might be unpopular but I feel as if NFS Heat was the NFS series’ final hope because Unbound is utter GARBAGE. That being said I know that FH4 is better than FH5, thé content was better, not like the lackluster hot wheels content which anyone only ever bought to get the extra festival playlist points easier in my opinion. But the reason I like Forza Horizon so much more than need for speed is because it feels like a celebration for cars, because it is! I love thé idea of having a big ass festival strictly to celebrate cars. One could argue that the cops being in need for speed brings it over Forza, but I would rather a festival like atmosphere strictly for cars than to just try and not get busted. I don’t know how « in line » my views are with others on here but I as a PC Forza player, FH5 is good and I want to accustom myself more with the series, so I’ll be getting FH4 soon! So I recently went through all of AOT, and it quickly became my favorite series of all time, and one of the things that really helped me get into it was the soundtrack. As an aspiring musician myself who wants to make music for anime and video games in almost exactly the same style as AOT, this soundtrack is absolutely amazing!!! I've had it on pretty much on a loop since finishing the series a few weeks ago, and I kinda just wanted to gush about it for a bit, lol. So without further ado, here are my 3(ish) favorite tracks from each season!
Season 1:

• Guren No Yumiya. I'm gonna try to keep this to just the actual OSTs and not the openings, but I absolutely have to mention this one, it's absolutely iconic. I've been listening to this song for way longer than I have been into this series, and it's become a favorite of mine, it's just so goddamn catchy.
• The Reluctant Heroes. Am I the only one who thinks of Levi when they hear this song? Sure, it plays when he shows up for the first time, but even if it hadn't, the lyrics of this song fit him perfectly. It manages to be epic while still having a bittersweet feeling of loss and regret to it, and it works really well for me.
• Counter Attack-Mankind. There are so many good moments when this song plays in the entire series, and it always lands for me. It just has this feeling of hope to it that is really uplifting and makes you feel like maybe, just maybe, these characters stand a chance in this bleak and oppressing world, it's extremely powerful and I love it.
• DOA. Man, this song is good. That guitar riff is absolutely amazing, the vocals are a perfect call to action, it's catchy, it's fun, and it never fails to get me absolutely hyped for what's happening.

Season 2:

• Shinzou wo Sasageyo! Probably my favorite of the Linked Horizon OPs, this song is so goddamn good. It's a perfect opening track for this series if you ask me, and is only topped by one I'll talk about later. I'd be very surprised if any fan of this series couldn't sing along with the chorus, it's memorable, it's epic, and it's just absolutely amazing.
• Barricades. Probably my favorite vocal track in the entire series, this song takes what I said about Counter Attack-Mankind and how it has that feeling of hope to it, and perfectly combines it with DOA's amazing riffs and hype power. The moment when this starts playing again at the end of S4P2 had me jumping out of my seat in excitement. Also, I kinda associate this song's lyrics with Armin for some reason and idk why, I just feel like they fit him really well.
• YouSeeBIGGIRL. Now, I know this song is probably on everyone's lists, but that's for a reason. It's huge, it's epic, and it never fails to get you hyped. The vocals in the second half are absolutely beautiful, and its use in the anime is perfect.

Season 3:

• attack ON titan . Now, I could've talked about this song in Season 1 because I love that version, but I think the Season 3 version took an already perfect song and made it even more grand and epic. Everything about this track, from the guitar, to the vocals (With the extra solo vocalist in this version raising everything up even more), to the new piano intro, literally everything about this track is absolutely perfect, and it's probably the best song I've heard from any anime I've seen.
• Before Lights Out. This song is so fucking epic, it gets you perfectly hyped for what's fixing to happen and it's absolutely amazing. The lyrics are simple and yet perfect for the situation, and just in general it's a perfect track.
• Apple Seed. Now, Season 3's soundtrack has so many good remixes and orchestral arranges of older tracks, and this one stands out above the rest because the new vocals are just so goddamn good. It takes one of my favorite tracks from Season 2 and makes it even better.

Season 4:

• My War. Now, I know I said I'm gonna try to stick with the OSTs and not ramble about the OPs too much, but I have to talk about Season 4's OPs because they're both fucking amazing. I'll be the first one to admit that this song had to grow on me at first, but when it did, man it's catchy. It manages to strike this perfect balance between being creepy and being an absolute banger, and on top of that it's just a very complex piece musically, especially in the chorus. You've got like 5 different moving melody lines between the almost children-esque singing of the choir, the sort of war chanting of the main vocals, and then the violins come in on the repeat and add this amazing counterpoint to all of that, and then you've got the drums and guitar under that and it seems like it should be busy and cluttered, but it's mastered so perfectly that it all just works.
• The Rumbling. Now, even though I just wrote a mini-essay about My War, The Rumbling is actually my favorite of all the OPs. I think having a full-on metal OP for Attack on Titan works so well, and the lyrics are part of why this works so well for me. These lyrics perfectly represent Eren in Season 4 to the point to where they actually helped me figure out his motivations ahead of time and what his plan was. Especially that chorus, the whole "If I lose it all, slip and fall, I will never look away" line gives me chills. I could probably make a whole post breaking down this song and why it's so great, but that's for another day.
• Akuma No Ko. Easily my favorite of the EDs, this song is absolutely beautiful on a level I think only Gurenge from Demon Slayer can compete with for me, and it even blows that song out of the water. Everything about this song is perfect, but I think the chorus is the best part. The way the entire song builds up to it is absolute perfection, and then you get that drop with the amazing vocals and it works so goddamn well. This is also another one where the lyrics perfectly represent Eren, probably even better than The Rumbling does if you ask me.
• Ashes on the Fire. Easily my favorite of the new orchestral tracks, this song is absolutely epic, it's a perfect battle theme, and that first time it plays in S4E1, it gave me goosebumps. It builds up to the drop perfectly, and it doesn't stop building for a second until it's over.
• Splinter Wolf. This one has to be on here just for that final sequence of the new episode, that has to be one of the most exciting scenes in the entire anime for me, and I absolutely cannot wait to see the finale!

Reba - Really fluid and laid-back jamming, with Trey all but absent (relatively speaking), as if inciting the others to respond. This results in an all but total dialing down of the sound. Not so much a secret language, as a testament to the band, who, via subdued and nuanced playing, manage to maintain the structure of the jam before Trey works through a series of cool rhythmic shifts and wonderful sustain to arrive at the "note."
It's Ice - Band uses the jam as a segue for a performance of the entire suite of Gamehenge songs, one of only 5 such performances. Unfinished.
Show Notes:
Trey and Mike teased Fire (Ohio Players) in Stash. The Bowie intro contained Simpsons, Oom Pa Pa, Random Note, and All Fall Down signals and Mike teasing Sailor's Hornpipe and briefly Split Open And Melt. This show started with bad sound problems, resulting in the band aborting two attempts at a Chalk Dust Torture opener. After the first Chalk Dust failed, the band said a round of "thank yous" and Fish added "good night, we'll see you next time." Antelope contained a vocal jam in the intro and a Jean Pierre tease from Trey. YEM contained Who Knows teases. The YEM vocal jam was partially based on burgers. Before Terrapin, Fish was introduced as "the late Henrietta," and then commented that he is no longer Henrietta, but has not yet thought of a new name. He and Trey introduced Chris Kuroda (as "Cooter," with a "Charge!" tease) and Colorado fan "Erik the Viking." Terrapin included a brief Whole Lotta Love jam. Weekapaug contained a Theme from Bonanza tease by Trey.

*I was looking at a 3060 ti but am unsure about the cpu. I don’t know if Intel or AMD would be better long term for the sockets and upgrading. Also what would be a good monitor to pair up with?

I’m a PlayStation player since I started gaming in 2010 and just got a Xbox one for my birthday. It came with Forza horizon 1 and 4 and OMG! Need for speed has nothing on these games. I’ve been missing out big time, from the graphics to the massive amount of content, don’t even get me started on the insane amount of vehicles there is to choose from. This is what racing games are meant to be! Sorry just had to show my appreciation for this series!
