2023.03.30 17:18 SoulfulBlueEyes Looking beyond their youthful eyes

I do not know why but this week’s school shotting is really bothering me. I am not sure if it is because it is a private school and I somehow thought that such schools were immune to that type of violence . Perhaps I have finally got to an age where I hate to think that a young person with their whole life ahead of them could do such horrible things. While I know that twenty-eight is not such a young age and technically an adult, when I think back of my life in my late twenties, I still think of a child trying to find his way in life.
Let me begin by making an unpopular statement. I believe in responsible gun ownership, whatever that means. I grew up hunting and fishing and I like many older adults who grew up in a rural area I can remember going to school with kids who left their hunting rifles in their gun racks in the school parking lot. I was taught gun safety as a child and young adult. I also would go on to serve in the military and be taught how to operate all kinds of small arms and semi and fully automatic weapons. But I still just sit here and hurt and cringe thinking about this latest tragedy.
Truthfully, this past week I have begun to look my students differently. I have really begun to see their youth and innocence again. To really look into their eyes and acknowledge them. To look beyond their outward appearance and truly look behind their eyes. Even the students that are difficult to manage I am trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. The students who do not do assignments and routinely disrupt my class I am trying to really to see them. Because this week I just feel sad for them. Yes, that is it. I just feel so very sad for them.
I can remember being in the war and thinking I signed up for this. Heck, I not only signed up for this I volunteered to go overseas. I accepted a certain amount of risk and when bad things happened, I tried to remember that it was my choice to be there. But these kids …. And these parents … And these communities …
I have really begun to see the students differently this week. I have really begun to look beyond their youthful, tired eyes. I know in this sub we spend a lot of time talking about the struggles and challenges that we face as educators but this week I have been reminded of theirs.
Thank you for allowing me a space to vent and express some of my thoughts. I truly hope that even the unpopular opinions are accepted in grace and the spirit in which they were intended. And now I ask you dear reader and fellow educator. Are any of you seeing your students differently this week ?

2023.03.30 17:13 _Nearby_Ad If statistics justify misandry/misogyny/sexism? Why don't they justify racism?

PREFACE:
I (22 malecis) was talking to my friend, who we can call Rowan (23 nonbinarylesbian), today at lunch along with a few other friends, and the topic eventually turned to the recent Wesleyan protests over whether they should allow trans women into the university. My friend Rowan talked a lot about how they thought women's only university's were safer than mixed gender universities and how they shouldn't allow people who have male genitalia into women's universities unless they come out as women. I thought this was interesting as couldn't someone like me, a cis man, come out as a women to enter into the university without changing anything else about myself? So I asked Rowan, what if you didn't have your keys and needed to get home, who would you allow to take you home? They said they'd allow any women, cis or trans, but anyone with a male genitalia who isn't a trans women would be an absolute no. They justified this by saying that statistically men make up the vast majority of SA'ers so to keep themselves safe they'd never get into a car alone with a man, or someone who has male genitalia and isn't a women. I thought their argument was eerily similar to the arguments made by some racists and Neon***s online about why black people should be discriminated against because of statistically higher crime rates. I've also seen a lot of people in this subreddit justify similar beliefs due to SA statistics, so I thought I'd ask this subreddit about what you all think about this, as I've already spoke to Rowan about it and am still intrigued on what other people think.
QUESTION:
If statistics justify misandry/misogyny/sexism? Why don't they justify racism?

2023.03.30 17:12 PennyworthInvesting Copper vs Oil: The Great Disconnect

Copper vs Oil: The Great Disconnect
Copper is an important industrial metal and remains the key transitional metal in our view for the ongoing renewable revolution.
Historically, copper also has an almost unbeaten record for sniffing out economic strength and weakness before many other commodities. Fondly called Dr. Copper for this very reason, the copper industry is an essential part of the global economy and demand is closely tied to overall economic growth.
According to the Copper Alliance (a leading advocate for the copper industry), one tonne of copper is enough to build 40 cars, power 100,000 mobile phones, drive operations in 400 computers and bring electricity to 30 homes.
Historically, there has been a strong correlation between copper and oil, as both are affected by the same economic factors and market conditions. Energy costs make up a significant portion of the costs of copper extraction, smelting and refining, so there is a material basis for copper and oil prices to fluctuate in unison.
Oil is also a critical power source for economic activity, and quickly reflects falling or rising economic output. Oil accounts for about 3% of GDP and is one of the world’s most important commodities. Petroleum is essential to the manufacture of innumerable products from plastics and chemicals to clothing, and constitutes billions of dollars of transactions, even before considering its use as a fuel for transportation.
For a short video summary of this report, look here: https://youtu.be/6zX6yTk6jYU
A decline or expansion of the world economy almost always results in an increase or decline of oil and copper prices. Forecasts of the respective prices and consumption of these two commodities, are generally set and revised with projections of global economic growth. Case in point, economists will often perceive a rise in oil prices as news of inflationary or recessionary tailwinds.
https://preview.redd.it/f0gh2sse4wqa1.png?width=867&format=png&auto=webp&s=2f7a34688b06f6224c6679c8cf477f6910dfc9e7
However, we’ve noticed something strange happening lately. We are seeing a decoupling of copper and oil prices, with copper prices rising dramatically year to date while oil prices are struggling amid global inflationary concerns and a worldwide banking crisis.
Oil vs. Copper Price (Year to Date %)
So why is copper holding up so much better than oil, when forecasters expect slowing economic growth, tightening lending standards and a potential recession within the next 12 months?
We think the answer all comes down to inventories…

Oil: A Story of Geopolitics & Supply
The International Energy Agency (IEA) states that in Q4 2022, supply outpaced demand by over 1 mb/d, despite a cut in OPEC+ production targets and disruptions to US supplies (due to winter storms).
Also, gains in energy efficiencies and soaring sales of electrical vehicles, will curb global 2023 demand growth by close to 900 kb/d in 2023. The market participation of Russia and China remains unpredictable, as sanctions have prompted Russia to seek new customers (at arguably reduced prices) for their oil, and the nature and speed of China’s reopening is still uncertain.
US Central bank policy has overshadowed China’s reopening, with the two week old banking crisis taking crude oil futures down by about $11/bbl, or 13% since March 3rd.
The US oil benchmark, Western Texas Intermediate (WTI) continues to slump as well as US crude stockpiles build. Overall, optimism is fading from the market.

Copper: The Uncrowned King of Commodities
Like Rodin’s the Thinker, copper sits above the rest in contemplation of the current tepid macroeconomic backdrop.
Copper is the best performer this year out of the industrial metals, rising more than 7% year-to-date, while other comparable metals have fallen in an environment of slowing economic growth expectations.
There is evidence that current prices aren’t reflecting expected supply deficits, which we’ll discuss below.

Very Low Inventory Driving Current Price Strength
We think the most likely explanation for Copper’s strength vs oil comes down to copper’s very low global inventory levels. As we’ve covered in previous articles, global inventories for copper and other industrial metals held at exchange monitored warehouses (i.e. LME & SHFE) are at record lows.
The situation looks like its gotten worse amidst all the economic worries not better, with investment Bank Goldman Sachs forecasting that the world could run out of visible copper inventories by Q3 this year, if current demand trends continue.
The re-opening of China, a major consumer of copper is a major contributor to rising copper demand expectations this year. Chinese demand rose strongly in February, the latest month of data. Currently, copper inventories are at the lowest seasonal level since 2008.
According to GS, Chinese copper demand rose 13% in February year-over-year; and they believe that the price could hit $10,500 a tonne as the Asian nation increases their post lunar new year industrial activity.
Copper Global Visible Inventories
One of the major factors affecting the strong copper price is the increasing demand for green technologies, more specifically batteries. McKinsey & Co. has identified that electrification is projected to increase annual copper demand to 36.6 million metric tons by 2031, and only rapid new mine development and the adoption of copper mitigating technologies, could potentially fill the looming copper supply gap.

Shortfalls, Slowdowns & Supply Gaps driving an Uncertain Future
A 2022 S&P Global study found that significant copper shortfalls will begin in 2025, as a result of increased demand from the energy transition and limited new copper supply. Their rocky road scenario assumes that if current conditions continue, there will be a 10 million metric ton shortfall by 2035. Even in their high ambition scenario, which assumes significant strides in technologies for extraction and recycling techniques, a shortfall will continue until 2035.
Forecast Copper Supply & Demand Balance
Unfortunately, the mining industry will not be able to meet this supply gap from new production without a frankly unrealistic increase in drilling capital expenditures.
Many of the world’s largest copper mines are facing dwindling reserves, depleted ore-grades and are slowing production due to capital-intensive major projects being moved underground in a bid to increase access to more ore.
Looking for new deposits (called greenfield exploration), is very costly and imposes inherit risks and difficulties. Not to mention, finding copper and putting it on production takes a long time.
The past decade has seen greenfield exploration slow dramatically, as the excess supply from 2006-2012 was worked down.
S&P Global estimates that new discoveries averaged 50Mt annually from 1990 to 2010. Moving to the present, discoveries have fallen by 80% to only 8Mt / year.
Current estimates expect a cumulative supply gap of 50Mt or over two years of global demand, between 2022 and 2030.
Mining project approval rates have stalled. During the first half of 2022, the volume of committed projects totaled just 260,000 tonnes of production per year.
Mining Project Approvals by Year (kt copper)
Three Ways to Invest in a Copper Shortage
Given the significant inventory shortages we have identified above, copper prices are poised to hold up better than other commodities if we are going into a period of economic weakness.
A resumption of quantitative easing by Central Banks or falling interest rates, could easily push copper prices to new highs under the current supply shortages.
We prefer three different ways to invest in these trends, bucketed by diversification and risk.
On the lower risk end of the spectrum is the Global X Copper Miners ETF (Ticker: COPX). The ETF is well diversified with 51 positions, and the top 10 stocks taking up a little over half of portfolio.
The diversification of COPX helps you avoid taking on company risk, the risk that one company does something stupid. COPX provides exposure to the price of copper with the potential for better returns than physical copper given the operating leverage copper miners have to the underlying commodity.
Top 25 Holdings of the COPX Copper ETF
Year-to-date copper prices are outperforming the copper miners 3.4%, though in early February the copper miners were up 18%, 10% more than physical copper.
YTD Performance of Copper vs COPX ETF
Our second preferred way to invest in copper upside is to own a high-quality large miner like Southern Copper (Ticker: SCCO). Southern Copper has a market value of $55bn and generates almost 80% of revenue from copper.
Southern Copper Footprint
Yes, Southern Copper is more expensive than large mining peers like BHP or Freeport-McMoRan, but it has outperformed them significantly this year due to its heavy copper weighting. Exactly the exposure and outcome an investor would want.
Forecast EV/EBITDA in 2023
YTD Performance
Our final investment pick to take advantage of the positive copper outlook is a small cap miner, with a unique value proposition. Investing in small caps does come with higher operational risks, but this is balanced by far higher return potential as smaller miners are often mispriced, especially at the beginning of a sustained period of stable to rising commodity prices, like we may be in today.
The company we’ve chosen has a truly unique operational footprint as it produces copper but does not need a mine to do so. The company Amerigo Resources (Ticker: ARG, ARREF), which we’ve written about before on Capital10x, provides significant leverage to copper prices without exposing investors to uncertainties that come from operating a complex copper mine.
Amerigo receives waste fluid (tailings) from El Teniente, one of the largest copper mines in the world. The company extracts the remaining Copper and Molybdenum from the waste stream, selling it back to the mine at the current global copper price.
https://preview.redd.it/km165rqb6wqa1.png?width=705&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ed4b9bd1ffdf944ad1e0be228ab6f31de71f960
Another risk mitigator with Amerigo is the company’s very low leverage. Cash exceeds debt which gives the company flexibility should copper prices decline for a period, if the world does go into a shallow recession.
Amerigo is trading on a trailing EV/EBITDA of 5.3x with Copper at $4.11/lb. The last time the stock traded at 5.3x EV/EBITDA copper was at $3.00/lb.
Amerigo EV/EBITDA multiple vs Copper Price
This tells us there is significant upside at current copper prices, especially seeing as EBITDA is expected to be $36 million at $3.60/lb copper which is in line with EBITDA in 2018, when the stock was at a similar multiple.
Bottom Line: Amerigo is pricing in $3.60/lb copper when prices are trading at $4.00/lb or 10% higher.

Commodity Prices Rarely Lie
Whenever we notice two economically sensitive commodities like oil and copper diverging in price, we take notice.
After looking at the fundamentals of each, it became clear there are huge differences that likely explain the divergence.
Oil investment may be low historically, but we can see demand weakening in real time through rising inventory levels in the US and elsewhere.
Copper in contrast has an acute supply shortage. The supply situation is so critical that even as global growth and demand are weakening, prices have been rising, telling us supply just isn’t there.
Copper has the superior short term and long term demand trends and continues to be our preferred commodity investment this decade, regardless of the chances we see of a global recession in the near future.

2023.03.30 17:11 spliiff Mom (41) had a bad stroke and things are crazy/worrisome.

March 4, 2023, my 11 y/o sister calls me saying "somethings wrong with mom, we're calling the ambulance. She's laying on the patio and she's dizzy and can't feel her arm. I rush over there, ambulance are leaving and I jump out my car crying asking what happened. Luckily, my little sis found her in time, otherwise she wouldn't have made it
It was a hemorrhagic stroke, bleeding deep in her brain and her left side is paralyzed. It's been almost 3 weeks since, she's been in rehab for 1 week so far. She didn't have surgery, so what theyve been doing controlling her BP and letting the blood reabsorb. She has HBP, and has been extremely stressed and going crazy due to relationship problems with my dad (I don't blame her). She's always been the type of person to avoid taking medication as much as possible, but after this that's definitely gonna change.
It's so crazy and sad seeing her change traumatically all from stress. The condition she's in is like seeing someone who has brain damage from drugs or someone who ODed. I just can't believe this happened from stress, it truly can kill you.
Since she's been in the rehab unit, there's been multiple things that happened that's making me think they're neglecting her in there. The last time i was visiting, she kept swinging her right leg not stop towards the left side (she's almost constantly doing this). When pressing the button to call the nurse to have her readjusted, it took them 15-20 minutes to come each time. Keep in mind, everytime I've visited her in the rehab unit, there's only 1 Doctor around the whole unit, and I hardly see her nurse in there with her, and never show up until we call them. Due to her leg swinging, they called me saying they found her on the floor. They didn't seem concerned when they told me that. They just told me that "she's okay tho, she said she's not in pain or anything." But how could they let thay happen? How long was she on the floor for? Another thing is that when my aunt visited her, there was also no nurse around her whole visit until the end. She didn't have a diaper or catheter in, her privates were just OUT, no protection. Anytime anyone has visited her in the rehab unit, theres hardly ever a nurse in there with her, or even around. I'm so worried they're neglecting her bc of these reasons and it makes me think it's because of our insurance (basically the "poor" ppl kind).
Though she's making progress since she's been there, it's sad seeing her not herself/lack of expression. Not always, but when we ask her questions to test her memory, for example me and my siblings names and ages, reading words on a shirt, bringing up certain memories, she'll remember for the most part and recite things correctly. But she'll also say random phrases and repeat things over and over that don't make sense or aren't related. The most words she'll say tho is "yeah, no, yes, I love you, I miss you" stuff like that. It's not much, but she's definitely talking most days which is good. We'll play music for her too sometimes to hopefully trigger some memories and good feelings towards herself and her personality. She's also no longer on a feeding tube, she basically eats thick water and apple sauce and stuff. It made me so happy when I made her laugh, HARD. I've hardly gotten a chuckle out of her, but there's this time where she was looking at my shirt and said "diabetes?" And her whole right side of her face lit us and was giggling so much for like a whole minute. I never seen her face so expressive since her stroke. Her right eye was squinting so hard and her right side was smiling so hard. Made me so happy. It didn't say diabetes, but it had an Ice cream on it and "paletas" in cursive, so I kinda could see why she would think that. It's good to feel that her humor is still there somewhere.
Life's been hard since, bc we have a serverly autistic 6 y/o brother who we've been having to care for. (I'm 19, my older brothers 21, my sister 22). Also having to get his special care by ourselves. It was a process that was started n never finished by my parents. On top of that, my moms been a hoarder our whole life. Bc of her stroke and now disabled, were left to deal with clearing out the house and dumping so much stuff and paying alot, just to make our home in a good/ safe condition for not only my disabled brother but now my mom. We probably would've never been able to resolve my moms hoarding if it wasn't for this. I just hope she doesn't get mad/sad when we do bring her home eventually and so much stuff will be gone. But we have to do it for her own good and ours too.
Since her and my dad got off on bad terms prior to this, me and my siblings are left to take care of her and make it work. All this responsibility was dropped on us bc of her stroke. When I seen her the day it happened, she said she doesn't want to see my dad or nothing to do with him. Not saying he caused it, but she's been going crazy due to his drinking causing her extreme stress and HBP. Since her stroke, my dads been taking advantage of me and my siblings and goes out for drinks every night after work and comes home late. We spend more time taking care of the kids than him. I understand my dad works hard and is also stressed, but I wish he would take my moms stroke as a wake up call to stop doing that and be here for his kids (not necessarily us older kids but the younger kids).
Sorry this is long, but if anyone can give me advice and maybe some answers about my worries. Share your experiences and tell me what you think about mine based off what you know. This is the first time I've ever experienced something like this with someone so close in my family so this is all a learning process for us. I've been reading about strokes constantly on here and finally got the courage to write about my situation. Anything helps. God bless you all

(Note: So, I'm fairly new to Reddit so bare with my lack of experience in this setting. :>)
I have been a PA-C almost 5 years, and took a job working in geriatrics right out of school. I mainly work in SNF's and some limited time in assisted living arena, but no hospital medicine. I also work a limited amount PRN in Urgent care. I struggled with the immediate independence early on, as I rarely see my SP or even talk with her. She is "available" but only to a limited degree, so I've done a lot of my own learning about the SNF systems and how they operate. Early on struggled with juggling time, since we have to travel between facilities, place our own schedules in EMR, dictate, bill, etc. on our own. So at this point, I've gotten this all pretty much down, although I still struggle with accruing general medical knowledge and true CME due to schedule conflicts and family time, basically doing my best to listen to a podcast 2-3x a week in the car.
So my conundrum is that I am getting a bit tired of geri (i.e. schedule, pt loads, lack of skills/hands on) and wanting to (possibly) learn a new knowledge set and/or get into a specialty where I see I'm making a bigger impact on pts and have a tighter knowledge base. Maybe some hands on skills required.
Not enough time to go into great length about all the details, but suffice to say I don't get a lot of SP time/support, schedule is a bit unpredictable, and feel need to find a niche. My current schedule is M-F varying 8-5 or some days could be 11-7 if charting needs done or coming off call (6-7 nights a month, phone only, moderate volume calls). Pay is above average, but not great (103k, sucky call hr call pay, RVU bonuses pretty standard).
For those who have chosen to jump ship into a new specialty (with a family depending on you) how did you do it and what specialty did you break into? Also, what did you do prior to jumping ship? Really summing it up, I'm afraid to make a move and get hired into another role that's unfamiliar and end up loathing it or getting fired for lack of knowledge/experience. If I was single without kids, it wouldn't be such a hard sell.
Any advice from the PA-C community much appreciated. Thanks for hearing out my ramble.

2023.03.30 17:08 yukonwanderer Main Street improvements?

Does anyone else think that the biggest issue on Main Street isn’t the one-way flow but rather the ridiculously narrow sidewalks?
Does anyone know if the plan is to widen the pedestrian realm when all these changes happen?
Right now all they’ve done is add a bus lane and widened car lanes (removing one to make 4 wider lanes I believe) which is only going to make cars feel more confident to speed. Good thing there’s all those potholes to dodge lol.
We really need a wider pedestrian realm here. Plus trees. No trees, main corridor of city, truly ridiculous. Trees are great for traffic calming on top of the climate and psychological benefits. Put them in raised concrete planters if there’s no room underneath.
Anyway, at the very least we need to institute something similar to what toronto did on King street with a widened pedestrian realm even without the cost of sidewalk expansion.

2023.03.30 17:08 SnooMarzipans6854 Critiques?

Not story: I am out of the practice of writing, but it is a love of mine I come back consistently. I've decided to spend my mornings writing one short story to exercise this muscle once more. I would consider myself introspective in nature, while not always self-aware. Therefore, I am looking into childhood and the characters that influenced mine. My mother and father. This is the story about the day they met—
What was it about him?
Initially, in our youth, I suppose it could have been his sun-kissed skin developed due to his care-free nature, finding life in the waves of a far off place a family like mine could never afford to see. Maybe it was his knack for politely pointing out my obvious shy tendencies in the form of a joke. The small town I grew up in only afforded myself the ability to know a couple hundred folks, all of which were, however difficult at times, family. It is hardly reasonable to be swept off your feet by Joe down the street with whom you have a vivid memory of pushing you off the monkey bars in elementary. How humiliating it was to lift your face out of the sand, and find no one at your rescue, but instead the sound of his laughter at your despair. Boys will be boys was not a new concept to me, something innate in me taught me this was so by the time I could walk or formulate a conscious thought.
Then there was also the time that Joe was kicked out of his mother’s house, all of his belongings on the lawn, because he refused to work on the railroad with his father at the ripe age of 16. His poor mother only needed the help, and was relieved by one less mouth to feed. That work ethic would later do him well, but distract him from learning the ropes of being a romantic.
But this boy was different. Romance was his first language. Though a couple generations removed, I suppose his Italian roots run deep enough to be passed down the family lineage indefinitely.
Did the ocean teach him something I had yet to learn? It behooves me to acknowledge I had been longing for such a vast empty space that I know nothing about, or rather, knows nothing about me. Something other than dehydrated fields with little to no life forms other than ticks and black widows. A place where the sand is smoother, and should I fall on my face like I did on that playground way back when, it would feel as though the ground beneath me is only offering a pillow for a good night's rest.
How vain to surmise it would only be the physical beauty of another place that could create such a beauty as him. No, it had to be something more mystifying. I suppose skipping class in highschool, and getting away with it by charming the teachers, must’ve had its perks. I’ve lived by and because of the rules. The poverty my family experienced taught me that to do anything else would only lead to yet another difficulty, as if we weren't riddled with those.
I was 21 and had just moved to “the big city.” There he was, acid washed jeans, rolling stones sweatshirt, white new balances, and of course, a leather jacket covered in drywall to match the part. Smiling at him when he walked into the drugstore to fill out a job application was the first rule I broke. I knew I could never bring a boy like this home to meet my mother. Though, she was rarely home as it was, managing a nearby hardware factory on $8 an hour to support the rest of the littles that were still home.
A few days later he would be on the other side of the counter with me for his first shift. I can’t recall how the initial conversation would go. I do recall him offering to drive me home due to the ice storm outside. This California boy had no reason yet to trust me to drive his car for him, but it was clear to me that he had not been accustomed to the weather on that drive, and that it would have done the both of us justice had he offered me the wheel. At the time I would chalk this up as endearing, another boyish attempt to impress the girl. From there, we never spent a night apart. I did not know it at the time, but that would be the real tragedy.
Those initial sparks have yet to turn into a flame 40 years later, unless in the form of emotional turmoil in the home. At night I tend to the thought of my list of all the other rules I could have, and should have, broken. My dreams visit me, soon to be forgotten by the sound of my work alarm. There is a vague feeling of longing. Is it still for the ocean, or the heart of the ocean, where no one knows my name, and I am simultaneously unbothered by the question “who am i?”
I suppose there is not a need to know the answer if no one else is dictating that for you. When I searched for that vast space in him, I hadn’t expected the waves to engulf me into an abyss. My mistake.
It’s like a dormant virus that slowly digs its heels into one’s immune system. Overtime they would wake one day and struggle to remember how it felt to be at home in the body, struggle to remember “the before,” muchless envision a hopeful “after.”
The man on the pulpit at Sunday service makes marriage sound like a martyrdom that any virtuous person would stop at nothing to revive time and time again. I wonder at times if his wife would agree. I now know the show that folks put on in the name of God can easily conceal a much darker reality behind closed doors.
But who am I to project my own reality onto others? This must be my discomfort with the fact that living this way may indeed not be, or more accurately said, not have to be, normal.
How I envy the white picket fence dream now. I am an addict to no substance, but to the familiar. Living on a tightrope is the home we built. If either of us should fall off, at least then I, dead or alive, will be free.

2023.03.30 17:05 OCR10 Segway GT1/2 Firmware and Suspension Beta Testing

Segway GT1/2 Firmware and Suspension Beta Testing
Segway released a beta version of new firmware last night for GT1/2 owners. I had a chance to install it this morning and take it out for a test ride. Here are the notable changes from the prior version:
1) Electronic braking is now enabled. I had a chance to try it out and found it works quite well. It feels similar to the Ninebot Max electronic braking but I found that while it slows the scooter down quite a bit it won’t bring it to a complete stop.
2) Energy recovery - if enabled, it will use the energy from the electronic braking to slightly recharge the battery and extend your range. I’ve heard the estimate is fairly low, maybe 2-5% extra range. I’ll need more time to test this out.
3) Upgraded horn options. You can now long press on the horn, and it’s louder than the previous beep sound. You can also enable a feature that adds vibration noise from the motor to make it slightly louder and more noticeable. It’s a nice upgrade from the previous beep, which was almost worthless. But it’s still not as loud as the motorcycle horn I bought from Amazon. So I’m not getting rid of that just yet.
I am also testing a newly announced suspension for the GT series. The new suspension eliminates the knocking noise that was noticeable on some GT scooters. And it provides a slightly softer ride, although you still have 15 adjustable settings to fine tune the amount of dampening. I installed the suspension last night and found it works well. My scooter did not exhibit the knocking noise that others have mentioned but I can confirm that this one is definitely very quiet.
I’ll continue to test all of this out as I have more time. Just wanted to get a quick update out for GT owners who might find this useful. Happy to answer any questions.

2023.03.30 17:04 gigantegiraffe28 I have a question about the process for discharging a PLUS loan, as mom is now fully disabled.

I took out a Parent PLUS loan (or Direct PLUS loan, I see them used interchangeably) in the Fall of 2015 when I was a student at Univ. of Mississippi. The amount was $9,700 something and sits at $12,000 something now. It will come due on Sept 3. I finished by undergrad then did masters, never paid on it. Well, the borrower is my mom and in the Fall of 2020, she was approved for full disability (much more details in next paragraph). Until yesterday, I had no idea that a pathway for discharge exists under this circumstance. I'm thankful that now I know, so that I have about 5 mo. to take action, even though that doesn't sound like much when dealing with the federal govt. I did read on the student aid govt site that sometimes if a parent has disability that Nelnet will automatically be notified and it will be automatically be discharged. I am unaware that me or my mom have ever heard anything from them. Does anyone have anything to share about this process? It seems that there are 3 "paths" being VA status (she's not a veteran), SSA documentation, and Physician Documentation.
Details about my mom's situation: she was once a registered nurse. she has a lot of issues with her back and chronic pain. She has received 3 back surgeries and 2 bone spur surgeries in her life. She has AS (ankylosing spondylitis) which means her upper back is becoming more stiff/rigid over time and there is a lot of pain involved. She had 2 back surgeries when i was little and a kid. Her last one was in the fall of 2014. It involved 3 vertebrae being fused into 1 column in her neck b/c the cartilage was so worn, causing severe numbness. She did return to work after healing. Then took off for a bone spur removal. Back to work for a moment. Then off again in 2016 or 2017 for the other foot's bone spur removal. After the 2nd one, the PT was very hard and it started to become clear to her that working would be very difficult. So, she began a disability claim. I don't know how far she got into the process. But she and her spouse were approached with a business opportunity that involved being owners/managers of a dog boarding facility. They did that, as my mom thought that this office type owner position would be something she could do. Well, that whole thing went down. It had a lot of overhead, in a rural area, dumb little workers that would quit, not good profit. So that was a 1.5 yr over and done thing. So after that, she began her Disability application again. I believe on this one, she was denied 2x (at least once, I know that) and finally, with her attorney, went before a federal judge in Memphis and did the thing. Before the judge, other staff, explained her case, her attorney had all I's dotted, T's crossed. And it was awarded in fall of 2020. So she is, right now, Totally and Permanently Disabled. Well, she and her spouse separated and filed divorce around Oct 2021. And out of spite and malice her wife called SSA and made a false claim that she was working, driving around and doing dog rescue, etc, which was not true. There were some instances where my mom would ride along on a dog rescue trip, esp some to VA, PA, CO, just to see the places on a budget, but she was not employed or getting cash under the table. That was her then spouse doing those jobs, and her then spouse that vengefully made those false claims once they were apart. Sadly, my mom's wife died in an auto accident after that happened and after they had been apart for some time. I only write all this to give a really clear picture. My co worker who used to work in financial aid has told me before that she knew a girl in college whose mother had a stroke and was receiving disability but that the federal govt only partially reduced the loan amount. Which is sickening.
Edit - also, my mom does not have massive assets. She owes $40,000 on a 1990 3 bd / 2 bath house, gets around $1800 per month. That's left with $200-300 by time pay bills, food, mortgage, car note. She doesn't even have enough to pay the $170 premium for Medicare Part B just to see doctor. She pays out of pocket to go get her meds and used some uhh, self help herbals, to help with back pain.

THE STORY SO FAR
“I don't have time for this,” you mumble to yourself as you pull into the coffee shop parking lot. You're late for work. Again. Does everyone in town really need to get their coffee right this second?
You circle the lot three times before finding a place to park. The guy in that black sports car doesn't look too happy, but you were clearly there first. You had your signal light on and everything.
Rushing into the cafe, you anxiously tap your foot at the back of the line, counting ten people in front of you. Ugh. Haven’t any of these people heard of ordering ahead? Sure, you couldn’t because your phone was dead. But what was everyone else’s excuse?
The people at the register move to the side to wait for their order and you inch forward. Nine people, now eight, stand between you and your morning caffeine. You can't see the menu, but it doesn't matter. You order the same thing so often, they should name a drink after you.
The door opens, and someone gets in line behind you. With nothing better to do, you glance over your shoulder. The guy behind you looks familiar. You try not to stare, but you turn your body. To the casual observer, you are reading the community bulletin board. But out of the corner of your eye, you are examining your line buddy.
His hair is the color of freshly brewed coffee while his eyes resemble a mocha latte. About a head taller than you, he is dressed in jeans and a polo. You definitely recognize that profile. But where could you have met him?
The line moves forward. Six more people to go. You return your gaze to the bulletin board, shifting your eyes to the guy behind you. He seems to be studying the menu, biting his upper lip as he concentrates. Could he be any sexier?
The guy leans forward slightly. He's probably trying to see the bakery case, but you can't help catching a whiff of him. Vanilla latte with a hint of musk.
A moment later, he taps your shoulder. You can feel your eyes grow wide. Does he realize you’ve been checking him out? Feeling your cheeks grow warm, you turn to face him. Before you can say anything in your defense, however, he wordlessly gestures toward the register.
You follow his gaze. While you were busy drooling over the eye candy behind you, the line has moved. There is now only one person standing between you and your morning caffeine.
Mortified, you stare at the register, willing the cashier to move faster. It must have worked, because within seconds, the woman in front of you steps aside and you place your order.
As soon as you swipe your credit card, you rush to the corner of the pickup area, squeezing between two senior citizens. There’s no way Hot Guy will think you’re trying to get close to him now.
Not that he seems to notice. After placing his order, he stands near the little table with cream and sugar, playing on his phone while he waits. Everyone is playing on their phones, as you should be doing. But you couldn’t. Because your stupid charging cable just had to die last night.
Hot Guy looks up from his phone, right in your direction. Oh no. How long were you staring? Did he notice? Meeting your eyes, he sends you a sexy smile. Was that because he saw you looking? Or because he wanted you to look?
Thankfully, your name is called. You rush to retrieve your drink, but in your haste, you accidentally knock it over. The flimsy top falls off, spilling your vanilla latte all over the pickup counter.
Everyone around you jumps back in surprise, but the barista passes you a towel with a smile. “Are you okay?”
Taking the towel, you nod. “I think so.” You glance at the damage. No one was burned, thankfully. You didn’t even ruin anyone’s shoes. The only casualty is your pride.
Another employee has already run to your side of the counter with more towels to clean the mess, so you’re not sure what you’re supposed to be doing with the one in your hand. You double check, but you didn’t spill any coffee on yourself.
As you return the towel to the counter, the barista behind the counter yells out. “Mike!”
Hot Guy squeezes beside you to grab his coffee. With a nod and a smile in your direction, he grabs it and heads outside. A moment later, the barista again calls your name. Taking the coffee in both hands, you make sure the lid is secure before taking a sip. After thanking the barista profusely for redoing the order, you rush to your car.
You have ten minutes to get to your office on the other side of town. Not going to happen.
As you pull out of your parking space, you hear someone blasting a horn. Slamming the breaks, you check your mirrors. You almost backed into a black sports car. Your eyes go wide as you recognize the driver.
Who is it?
  • Hot Guy Mike
  • Your boss
It’s Hot Guy Mike!
Hurriedly, you pull forward to let the car pass. He didn’t see you, right? Or at least, if he did, he didn’t recognize you as the person who spill coffee everywhere. You can only hope.
Sinking low in your seat, you do your best to peek in your rearview mirror, but you don’t see the black car. You check your side mirrors. Nope. No car.
Sipping your coffee, you breathe a mental sigh of relief.
Until you check the clock on the dash. It reads 8:51. You have nine minutes to get to work. You are meeting with a new client first thing and you would like an extra few minutes to prepare. The Yeager account could make or break you. If you do well with this project, you could get a promotion. If you don’t, well, you’re pretty sure you’re already on the company chopping block. Or at least in line for it.
Sitting upright, you check your mirrors again. No cars. After shifting the car into reverse, you back out of the space a little more slowly than you did before. This time, at least, you don’t come close to hitting anyone as you join the line of cars trying to leave the parking lot.
Ugh. Is that person in front seriously trying to make a left-hand turn? On this road? There’s a right-turn-only sign for a reason!
Drumming your fingers against the wheel with one hand, you sip your coffee and glance at the clock. Eight minutes.
Eventually, the moron blocking traffic makes the left and you are able to fight your way onto the main road. Only to hit every red light between here and your office. You wait the best way you know how: sipping your latte and hoping your boss is stuck in the same traffic. Or even better: the client.
When you finally reach the office, it is well past nine o’clock. Pulling into the first spot you can find, you down the rest of your coffee as you shut the door.
You wave to the receptionist as you enter the building, but you don’t have time to chat. Walking briskly, you make a beeline to the back corner of the room. You wave to your coworkers, quickly realizing you are the last one to arrive.
You turn on your computer as you sit, swiveling to search for the folder containing all your notes for this morning’s meeting. And come face to face with your boss.
How long has she been standing there?
You gulp, sending her a sheepish smile. “Oh. Morning. I didn’t see you there.”
Smiling, Karen waves a dismissive hand. “No worries. Just got in. Traffic this morning was horrendous.”
You nod. Does she know you were late? Is she mad?
She doesn’t seem to be. She gestures to the folder in your hands. “Mr. Yeager’s here. Meet us in the conference room?”
“Yeah. Sure.”
“Great. See you in there.”
As she disappears into the cubicle forest, you take a few deep breaths. You can do this. You will land this account.
Confident that you are are confident as you can get, you grab your folder and head to the conference room. On your way, you detour to the kitchen. One more cup of coffee will help calm your nerves.
As you approach the conference room, you can see Karen approaching with your new client. Two clients, you realize. Why are there two? You were only expecting to meet with one person.
While researching your new client, you visited the company’s website. The man walking beside Karen is definitely Dr. Yeager. But who is the person behind them? Dr. Yeager is so tall, he is completely obscuring your view.
Since you arrive at the conference room only moments before them, you wait for them, smiling as they approach.
Karen gestures to you, introducing you as the junior accountant who will be assisting her before turning to you. “This is Dr. Yeager, and his son, also Dr. Yeager.”
The older man thrusts out a hand. “Nice to meet you. I look forward to working with you.”
“And I, you.” Smiling, you shake his hand, surprised at his firm grip.
Karen holds open the door to the conference room. “Shall we?”
The older doctor laughs. “Of course. Ladies first.” He holds the door, ushering Karen inside.
And you get your first glimpse of the younger doctor. Except, it’s not your first glance. You’ve seen him before. In line behind you at the coffee shop this morning.
He smirks. “Well, well. Isn’t it a small world?”
What do you do?
  • Nod and scurry into the conference room?
  • Drop your coffee again
  • Say something coy and flirtatious
Continue the adventure

2023.03.30 17:01 AgentPeggyCarter Throwback Thursday - Profiler article excerpt from 9/1997 issue of Written By

Sixty-Minute Men & Women Writing The Hour Drama Written By Patricia Troy
Profiler
With the current proliferation of television series based around the weird, the paranormal and the just plain psychotic, last season's premiere of Profiler distinguished itself by being the most recognizably human. While X-Files agents Scully's and Mulder's characters remain about as multidimensional as holograms and the lead character on Millennium looks creepier than most of the killers he tracks, FBI profiler Sam Waters (Ally Walker) has the intelligence, warmth and depth of a fully drawn woman.
Created by writer Cynthia Saunders, the pilot established the main characters and the nature of the crimes they'd be dealing with. Originally set in the Atlanta Police Department, executive producers Kim Manners and Ian Sander worked with Saunders on the script so that by the end of the pilot Bailey Malone (Robert Davi) and Waters would head up the Violent Crimes Task Force operating under the auspices of the FBI.
"We had to figure out how to give the show legs," Manners explains, "so that's why we created the task force. Atlanta is a small jurisdiction, and being under federal auspices made it so that they could work all over the country. And as far as cases, they get the most complicated, most gruesome and the most technical."
One distinctive element of the show that wasn't written on the page was what is termed "Sam Vision"--a quick flash of images that are meant to visualize Waters' intuitive flashes as a trained profiler. The visions, which were created in post-production by Manners and Sander, have led to what the writers feel is a misconception that Waters is a psychic. "What she's seeing," Sander explains, "is not what's coming in the future. It's what she's surmised as a forensic psychologist and a cop. From our point of view we prefer that she's not clairvoyant because it makes the stories more difficult to write and execute. There are a lot more traps if there has to be a logic in how she got from A to B."
Although Manners and Sander will begin to contribute episodes for the coming season, the first year's scripts were written by the staff with collaboration and input from the two executive producers. Being a regular viewer of the show, I was a little apprehensive, but morbidly anticipating sitting down with the staff. What would people who sit around and think up stories about serial killings down to the most minute detail look and act like? Thankfully, they looked and acted like most TV writers (except for the one guy in Heaven's Gate black Nike running shoes--but it was probably just coincidence). The human elements of the series--Waters' relationship with her daughter, Malone's difficulties with his teenage she-rebel, the friendships and divisions between the members of the task force--have been developed by this team of writers: co-executive producers George Geiger and Steve Feke, executive story editor Bob Lowry, story editor Sibyl Gardner, writeproducer Charles Holland and consulting producer Dee Johnson.
According to Feke, "We don't want to write a series that requires week-to-week tune-in, but we do want there to be continuing stories for our characters. So we still put the emphasis on our A story--the crime that's going to be resolved. The deepest challenge is finding room inside of complicated stories that require a lot of scenes and finding room to keep the personal stories going." For Holland, "The more emphasis we put on the personal story the more it enriches the show in the sense that this show is scary. You're supposed to be scared of what's going to happen, not just to the victims but of what's going to happen to our folks."
Because of the complexity of the stories, Lowry states, "We work together a lot more than we work apart. We cross-check each other so that we're certain we haven't made any mistakes. I think the amalgamated talents of this staff combine to find a way to make a show that will be unique--something fresh for the audience to see that's not an X-Files or Walker: Texas Ranger." Gardner agrees: "Our strength as a team comes from who we are as people. We all have very different perspectives on life and the world and human relations."
So how do their personal world views come into play while writing? "I was doing research on serial killers and I noticed a lot of women were in love with Richard Ramirez and wanted to marry him. I thought, 'What's up with that?' And it was in exploring that psychology that created an episode." says Holland.
"I don't think that this show is about the FBI or profiling at its deepest level," he continues. "People read the paper and they see that some guy killed somebody and stuffed him in the trunk of the car; this guy keeps heads in his refrigerator. And they think, 'Why would somebody do that?' We spend all our time figuring that out and that's what really turns me on."
Okay...well, I gotta go now.

2023.03.30 17:00 Cleverly_Clearly Respect Alucard! (Hellsing)

My name's Alucard. I'm an agent who takes out the trash for the secret service "Hellsing". A hit man, for the likes of you.

Alucard, the No Life King

In the 15th century, Vlad Dracula was the Voivode of Wallachia and conducted many military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. Although he was a hero to the Romanian people he ruled, to the world at large he was a genocidal butcher famous for his acts of cruelty, gaining the name "Vlad the Impaler" for the way he would display the skewered corpses of his enemies. Although he was eventually defeated and brought to the gallows for execution, he decided that living by any means possible would be better than an ignominious death at the enemy's hands. He drank the blood of the execution grounds, and was resurrected as a vampire.
In the 19th century, Count Dracula was defeated yet again, this time by the vampire hunter Abraham Van Hellsing. Rather than killing the vampire completely (if such a thing was even possible), Van Hellsing sealed and buried the creature deep in the Hellsing mansion, binding him to be under the control of the Hellsing vampire hunters.
Now, in the modern era, Sir Integra Hellsing is the current head of the Hellsing Orgainzation, the British Crown's vampire-hunting agency. When she became the head of the family as a child, and a jealous splinter faction of the Hellsings sought to have her assassinated, Integra went to the one place she had been told to run to when all hope was lost--the tomb of Dracula. When her blood touched his skin, he was revived once more, now a loyal servant of Hellsing. He goes under the name "Alucard", and works for the government, dispatching other vampires to protect the humans he once terrorized. Although, perhaps, given the opportunity to break free of his restraints, the true monstrous power of the legendary vampire would be far more dangerous than the threats he fights against...
Credit to NegativeGamer for gathering Hellsing: The Dawn feats for me.
Notes: Alucard is under a restriction system starting at Level 5 and ending at Level 0, with lower numbers having less restrictions on his power and Level 0 meaning "no restrictions". Feats from without these restrictions are marked.

Alucard's weapons of choice are the .454 Casull Auto and the 13mm Auto Anti-Freak Combat Pistol: Jackal, "The Jackal" for short. The Casull uses 13mm explosive steel rounds, alloyed with steel melted from a church cross; these bullets are highly effective against monsters when normal ammunition isn't (anime). Similarly, the Jackal uses 13mm armor-piercing explosive rounds with pure Macedeonium silver casings and mercury tips (anime)

2023.03.30 17:00 postentious Leasing vs Financing Vehicle

I am highly considering leasing a vehicle and looking for opinions on it. Leasing makes much more financial sense for me right now than financing, but I am finding it hard to justify paying for a car for two years and not getting anything out of it in the end.
I currently have an older car that was passed down to me by my parents but it is now on its last leg, so I have been trying to decide where to go from here to replace this vehicle. I was initially considering financing a new vehicle as literally everyone I know does this so it was naturally the first thing I considered. However, I am finding this hard to justify because although I can make it work with my budget, I work from home so I don’t need a car for daily use (although I do definitely still need something because I live in a smaller city that is fairly spaced out and has essentially non-existent public transportation), and I currently do not have any car payment so to increase my monthly expenses by so much for something I technically don’t need daily is very hard to justify.
I have also, of course, considered buying a used vehicle, but I am not comfortable buying something more than a few years old as I am tired of feeling stressed about something happening every time I drive my car (I have anxiety about this anyways so having an older car does not help!) and also do not want to have to deal with frequent maintenance. It seems like everything in my city that is only a few years old is not much cheaper than a brand new vehicle and the interest rates are even higher to finance a used vehicle so I would essentially end up paying the same as a brand new vehicle!
So, this led me to looking into leasing a vehicle. There are several cars I have looked at that are still not much cheaper to lease than finance BUT one of the vehicles I was highly considering when I was originally looking at financing is actually much more cheaper to lease and very much tempting me!! To finance this vehicle, it would be around $500/month for 7 years (😬) with a $7000 down payment; however, to lease it for 2 years, it is just $200/month (with the same down payment). After 2 years, I would likely feel more comfortable paying the extra money and would then start financing another vehicle. I could easily fit this $200 in my budget (I am soon getting a raise even higher than this amount anyway), AND I would be getting a brand new vehicle, so obviously I am very tempted by this!! But part of me still can’t get past the thought that, even though i’ll be better off in the short term because of the lower payment, I will be worse off in the long run because I won’t actually own the vehicle.
Anyone have any advice for me in this situation? Unfortunately, I don’t actually know anyone who leases their vehicle so I don’t really know a whole lot about it.

2023.03.30 16:59 BoysenberrySure8048 38(m) recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer which has metastasized to my liver.

Hello all - First I would like to offer my very best wishes for everyone else suffering from this disease. I wanted to share my story as it unfolds, in hopes that it helps someone else. From early childhood I always had stomach issues, even in grade school I would get extremely painful stomach cramps, and had diarrhea near constantly. This lasted up until around high school when my symptoms suddenly stopped. The doctors chalked it off to stress or IBS, nothing was done. Now I do not think this was related to my cancer, however I am communicating that stomach issues were pretty normal for me. So when they started again later in life, I did not give it the attention I should have. I dropped out of high school shortly after 9/11 and got my GED so I could enlist in the Navy. My dad was also enlisted in the Army National Guard, he was activated and unfortunately died during operation Nobel Eagle from a heart attack. Fast forward twenty some odd years, and I am a software engineer for one of the USA's "big banks". I do pretty well for myself, considering growing up in rural west Tennessee and only having a GED. I worked my ass off, and would take any job that would give me experience in the IT world. Eventually, I worked my way up to managing a team of software developers who write/maintain one of the data exchange protocols that keeps the financial world running. It is something I am extremely proud of, being for the most part self-educated. Earning a six figure salary means my wife (amazing women, no way I could do any of this without her, and I mean any of this. From the amazing career to the new diagnosis. She is my everything) does not have to work. Then after covid I was allowed to move back home, cost of living here is low, and with our monthly income we are able to lead very comfortable lives. But the stomach issues started up again, due to the issues I had early in life I just ignored them, assuming it was IBS/stress related as I was told before. Then around Jan 20th 2023, the pain got almost unbearable. It mostly hurt around my "guts" and in what I thought was my kidneys. Being a "manly" man, I thought it was my first kidney stone, and I could just power through it. I even took a few days off work so I could "relax" while in process of passing the stone. Fast forward 4 days, the pain is now so intense I literally passed out on the toilet when trying to have a bowel movement. There was also some blood, not a lot, and seeing a bit of blood in my stool was not completely abnormal. I only asked for three days off work, Wednesday-Friday, and it was now Sunday afternoon and I felt worse than before. I was convinced it was a kidney stone, just based on how people described it as "the worst possible pain for a man" and it's general location. But work was coming up so I figured I had better go to the ER, to either get some pain meds so I could work, or see if I was going to need help passing the stone. So they did the initial CT scan to get a closer look. This is when my world completely changed. On the scan (no kidney stones by the way) they noticed a 4mm growth in my colon. My first thought was "It cant be cancerous, I am only 38", after a few more tests our worst fears were confirmed. Not only was it cancer but it was stage 4, and had all ready spread to my liver. I have so far had 4 treatments of chemo, after the next treatment they will do a rescan to see if it has made any difference at all. I guess the point of this rambling post, (my first reddit post by the way) is just to remind people how quickly life can change. The wife and I (no kids) went from having financial freedom, a great job, and the ability to travel as we saw fit. Looking back we had such a great life, basically we were living the 30-something dream. Now it is chemo treatments, the being sick after said treatments, and the overall stress and worry of "how long?" I have become completely obsessed and hyper focused on making sure my life insurance is in good order, so that she will be taken care of after I am gone. Using phrases like "after I am gone" have become normalized here at home, and to a certain extent I am ok with that. I guess I have accepted my fate, but I NEED to know my family will be OK afterwards. Does anyone else feel this way? Is this normal, or a part of the grieving process? How do you balance the "time left vs. family wellbeing? I plan to post more here in the future, but I just wanted to get this off my chest. Thanks for listening, and as always, fuck cancer.

2023.03.30 16:51 canwepleasejustnot I feel like my parents think less of me because I didn't give them grandchildren

Some context - I'm a very successful professional in my mid 30s. I'm married and own my own business as well as holding a very demanding full time job. My job is very busy, very fulfilling, and between that and some fertility issues we have decided not to have children - at least not now, not biologically. We have some loose plans to fosteadopt maybe an older child when we're in our late 30s, early 40s, but that is very VERY very tentative. I never saw myself as someone particularly maternal. I love kids but I don't feel like I need one to complete my life or round out my personality.
Here's the thing. I'm an only child. My mom wants so badly to be a grandma and makes it known just about every time, overtly or covertly, when we're together. She knows we have a physical problem but seems to have selective amnesia about it - I've had to remind her a few times but when people ask HER why we don't have kids, she is quick to say that we have physical issues and that it's not for us. It's like she's supportive of the decision publicly but internally, between the two of us, she's incredibly disappointed and clearly trying to come to terms with the fact that her golden years wouldn't look how she thought they would.
I feel like a huge disappointment, despite everything I've accomplished. I'm the first woman in my family to complete college. I own property. I make six figures. I've been happily married for a decade but that's treated almost like something I was supposed to do, a default, nothing to be proud of. But when it's time to talk about someone who had a baby, that's all she can talk about around me sometimes. Even though in my opinion, and this is just my opinion, having a child is nothing special. Even worse when we're together like at a party or something where there is a baby - I can just feel her disappointment. It's hard to explain.
I got a brand new car last week and took her for a joy ride. She said - this is a nice car, I'm glad you do well for yourself. I said, yeah, sometimes not having kids makes other things easier. She goes "yeah... life goes on... or maybe it doesn't." Like what the fuck am I supposed to take away from that?
Am I making a huge mistake or something? I feel like everyone I know is having kids and when they do, they fall down this like.... deep dark hole, that I can't see the bottom of. They yell down from the bottom of the hole for me to jump down but in order to go down there into the dark unknown I have to give up everything I have with zero guarantee that I can keep it down in the hole.

2023.03.30 16:51 StepwiseUndrape574 Rockstar Launches GTA+ Subscription Service With Member Exclusive Benefits But Is It Worth It?

Once upon a time, it was commonplace for online games to have subscription fees. The earliest popular graphical online games, including Ultima Online and EverQuest, all had recurring service fees, as did many games that came after, such as Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft.
That model has largely given way to the "freemium" model where the publishers give the game itself away for free, but much of the game's content is locked behind the choice of either extended play times "grinding" for materials, or the option of skipping that grind with a real-money payment.
However, some games have both, and that usually includes the longest-lived and most-successful ones. Sega's ten-year-on Phantasy Star Online 2 is free-to-play, but has extensive cash purchases and also has a "premium" subscription available. In Final Fantasy XIV and the venerable World of Warcraft, the subscription fee is still required despite the presence of a cash shop.
carmeet
Grand Theft Auto Online has a lot of similarities to what we usually think of as qualities of "MMO" games. While it isn't "massively multiplayer" on a local scale—sessions normally include a maximum of 32 players—there are tens of thousands of players online at any given moment. It has named player characters with persistent progress and all of the other things we think of from MMO games: equipment, appearance customization, player housing, difficult multiplayer "raid" events, and so on.
With that context in mind, it probably shouldn't be a surprise that Rockstar is launching a subscription service for GTA Online. It's called GTA+, and it costs $6 a month. Ponying up for the premium subscription earns you a cool $500,000 in the in-game GTA$ currency every month and extra GTA$ on "Shark Cards," as well as exclusive benefits. Here's the list of benefits for the first month: The Principe Deveste Eight — along with a complimentary Hao’s Special Works upgrade for it before it is made available to purchase by the general public — plus the HSW Orange Trip and HSW CMYK Glitch Liveries. The Auto Shop located in La Mesa, introduces an assortment of gameplay updates from Los Santos Tuners. Current Auto Shop owners can relocate to La Mesa at no additional cost. Waived LS Car Meet Membership fees. Current LS Car Meet members with GTA+ will be reimbursed GTA$50,000 during this event period. Yacht owners can upgrade to the Aquarius Super Yacht at no additional cost. The Gussét Frog Tee and Broker Prolaps Basketball Top and Shorts automatically added to your wardrobe. The Conveyor Livery for the Mammoth Avenger, HVY APC, and TM-02 Khanjali. A selection of free paints and emblems for the Auto Shop. 3X GTA$ and RP on Hao’s Special Works Race Series. 2X Car Meet Rep on the Street Race Series. It would be easy to criticize Rockstar for this move because the company has already taken $60 of your money for the game. That's to say nothing of the grind-heavy nature of GTA Online that practically forces players to purchase Shark Cards for in-game currency if they want to make progress at any kind of reasonable rate. There's also the fact that the company is charging money for what is honestly an extremely minor update on the current-generation consoles.
In the interest of fairness, though, we'll note that many players who bought GTA V (including GTA Online) purchased it nearly a decade ago. Just like other major online games, GTA Online has seen years of additional content and improvements through continual updates, and that stuff does cost money to create.
deveste eight The Principe Deveste Eight, one of the rewards for subscribing this month.
If you own GTA V, you don't actually have to pay Rockstar anything to play it for the rest of eternity, so giving players an option to spend a little every month to support continued development is fair. However, the list of benefits, at least for the first month, is pretty weak.
There's another caveat, too: this program is only available to players on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. We've asked Rockstar if GTA+ will be coming to the PC version, and will update this post if we get a response.
