As I backpacked through Amsterdam, the city's vibrant culture captivated me. I visited notorious weed coffee shops, where locals and tourists indulged in their cannabis delights. With my taste buds excited, I tried various types of cuisine, often stopping at small street-side cafes for a quick snack.
But among all the sights and sounds, one stood out: a beautiful girl, who I saw across the street. I couldn't take my eyes off her as she walked gracefully, her long hair swaying in the wind.
As luck would have it, we ended up at the same coffee shop. She smiled at me as she ordered her drink, and I was instantly captivated. We got talking as we enjoyed our coffee, and I found out she was an artist, who had traveled from Spain to showcase her work in Amsterdam.
We spent the day exploring the city together, taking in the beautiful canals and visiting art galleries. As the sun began to set, we found a quiet spot near the canal and shared a joint, marveling at the beauty around us.
As the night drew to a close, we exchanged numbers and promised to keep in touch. I left Amsterdam with a lifetime of memories and a newfound appreciation for the city's culture and beauty. And of course, with the hope that someday I would see that beautiful girl across the street again.

This is a question to other F1 students in the US. I am in dissertation stage and want to spend the next two semesters writing my dissertation from another state (inside the US), with my family. My adviser, supervisor, and committee approved. I do know of plenty phd students in other universities doing this too.
The international center (IC) adviser said it was ok and "happens sometimes and it is not a problem." The program is open but warned me that the IC gave an "order" during covid for all international grad students to return and be based in the city, to comply with immigration law. It seems IC gave two contrary opinions on this. One to me and one to the program back in 2020. The grad director and was very categorical on their warning.
Do any other international (f1) student have experience with this?

I (21F) was born with hearing problems. I found out about it when I was in kindergarten, but growing up, I never believed I had hearing problems because I thought I heard everyone just fine. I ignored that they even exist.
In my teen years I was very social and friendly. I wouldn’t say I was an extrovert but I wasn’t an introvert either. I was loved by my coworkers and classmates. A lot of boys in my work/school had a crush on me.
During that time I was always working. From ages 15-18 I was in the food industry doing customer service.
After covid hit, I started realizing that I actually have trouble hearing people. When they had masks on I pretty much couldn’t hear what they had to say. I started gaining serious social anxiety. I was doing my college classes online and pretty much never went out and had zero friends. I only had my SO at the time who was the only one there for me and helped me with all my classes. I always struggled with school since I was a child, I don’t think I could have done my online classes without him. after classes became in-person, the thought of going back to school gave me severe anxiety. I completed my associates degree online with the help of my SO.
As time passed after covid, I started gaining serious social anxiety. I was not sure if it was because I was stuck home pretty much 24/7 during covid and lost my social skills or because I realized I have a hearing problem.
I applied for a job at best buy where my SO worked, and I absolutely hated any of my shifts without him. We had a work meeting for new employees where everyone had masks on and all the new employees would get up to demonstrate what they will do if so and so happens at the workplace, and I absolutely didn’t hear anything that was going on. When it was my turn to go, I ran to the bathroom and started bawling my eyes out, I was so embarrassed and anxious, I didn’t know what to do when I went back to the meeting. I eventually went inside and asked the manager to meet me outside, I told him about my hearing problems and he explained everything to me. I went back inside and did my part, but when I left and drove home I bawled my eyes out the entire way home. A new level of trauma was unlocked for me. This was the first time I was in this type of social environment where I couldn’t hear and had to talk as well.
A year or so after, I got married to my SO, luckily for me he made enough money and I had just completed my associates degree and didn’t have a plan to continue school, nor did I work during the time. So I decided I will be a housewife. And I loved it. I loved being comfortable in my own home and not having to have social anxiety in the outside world. This was a year ago.
Fast forward to now, I feel it biting me in the butt. We moved to a new state and i am so much happier moving away from toxic family/in laws but I am so codependent on DH that I can’t even make returns on my own. I will have him come to the mall with me to do my return, not because I’m lazy but because i’m afraid I won’t be able to hear the sales associate. I’m embarrassed I will have to keep asking them to repeat themselves and still not be able to hear them. Yesterday I had an orthodontist appointment for the first time in the new state we moved to, and I was so so anxious. My husband drove me there, I didn’t expect him to come inside with me but he did anyway. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to hear them but luckily I did. The doctors there always speak in a loud and clear voice. I felt very proud of myself that I did the talking on my own. I know it’s a small thing, but I don’t think anyone understands how hard it is to be in the outside world when you cannot even hear anything properly and don’t want to share it to anyone either.
I catch myself purposely ignoring people if DH and I are out for example in the elevator or a restaurant i’ll look down on my phone so that nobody talks to me, and if someone talks to me and I can’t hear them i’ll either say “yeah” or smile, and I leave without having no idea what they said. Because of this huge insecurity I refuse to have a social life, I am codependent on my husband when it comes to being in social situations. But I am afraid, when I have kids, and I have to take them to appointments, or go to their school, or whatever, how will I do it?
My DH is aware of all this, that’s why he is always there to help me. He understands me and will never not be there to help me in these kind of situations. But I wonder, will he ever resent me? For not being able to hear enough, for making him repeat himself when he talks to me, for asking him to come with me to certain places when I want him to be the one to talk to someone because I’m afraid I won’t be able to hear.
I don’t want to wear hearing aids, I can accept that I have hearing problems but I am not ready for the world to accept it. I just want to be able to hear again.

A few weeks ago many people were concerned about the CAD/USD movement- particularly on Mar 7 when it was expected that the next day Macklem would hold rates, and on Mar 8 when the BOC did indeed hold rates. There were a lot of concerns flying around about how our economy would be crushed and that inflation would run hot again from a imports getting expensive, and how it was the incorrect move for Macklem. There was also a large concern that capital would seek greater returns over in the US border because they offered higher rates and would cause the CAD/USD to drop even further and hurt Canadians.
Today CPI numbers came out and lo-and-behold it DROPPED MTM from 5.9% in January to 5.2%. A sizeable decrease that cements expectations that Macklem will continue to hold rates in the coming months and that the current interest rates are SUFFICIENT to quell inflation.
But the lesson learned from this episode is that the capital flights do not simply follow interest rates- that is only one of the factors that affect it. Currently in Canada our economy is in MUCH better shape than the US side to handle the inflation fight and engineer a soft landing (although no guarantees that there will be a soft landing). Our unemployment is at an acceptable rate and it seems that we've been able to make improvements to inflation without increasing unemployment significantly which is huge. Can't say the same to the US side. Capital prefers a stable environment without high inflation eating away at it.
The CAD/USD has recovered a significant amount of the decrease during the past few weeks and seems to have stabilized more. If anybody listens to the Loonie Hour my own sentiments echo Keiths on the Canadian economy- everything is gravy unless some outside shock sends ripples through Canada.

I have noticed that my new Bangle.js 2 does not react at all to phone calls to the android phone it is connected to. All I could find online is that apparently was an issue with an early version of gadgetbridge but that it got fixed long ago with an update. Does anyone else have this issue? Not missing phone calls when I have to have it set to silent is one of the main reasons I needed a smartwatch to begin with.

I'm attempting to clarify if permits are required for stem wall repair and slap foundation stabilization.
A couple of contractors have told me that permits aren't required because it's simply a repair.

Hi all! I’ve been paper trading 0DTE credit spreads on think or swim. I usually enter the trades on my phone, so I’m using their mobile platform if that matters.
My question is why the verticals spread bid and ask prices that are displayed on the option chain differ from the price that the spread is actually at. For instance, the bid price on the spread could be .50, then I click on it to make an order, and the limit price it suggests (based on the current mark for the spread) is a lower number like .3 or something. Anyone encounter this issue? I’ve had a similar issue paper trading on other platforms too (interactive brokers). Thanks in advance!

Hello! I am a 24 years old male, I weigh 265lb, 6'2". I am in the process of obtaining my CDL through an employer and need to pass to get the job / not fail a DOT drug test and have it on my record before I even start. I am currently 26 days clean from THC. I would smoke a little under half a gram a day (bong hit) everyday for the last 3 years. By my start date 3/27/23 I will be 32 days clean. So that makes it one month.
I have been doing drug tests at home, and have not passed one yet (without dilution). I have looked into synthetic urine, but unfortunately my employer will do a physical right afterwards where the doctor feels your genitals (so I can't stash it afterwards). I then looked into the Certo method and have read some compelling things. So I decided to try it out...

Hi everyone, I know this isn't the idea place to post this, but I can't get this dog out of my head. There is a sweet stray in the parking lot of the McDonalds/Taco Bell in Kayenta, AZ. I drove through last week Wednesday and stopped for food and saw him, didn't think too much of it. I drove by again on Saturday, also stopped for food about 11 pm, and saw him again.
He is just hanging out in the parking lot between the Taco Bell and McDonald's in Kayenta. I wasn't in a position to grab him, as I had an 11 hour drove back to CO ahead of me and was planning on sleeping in my car. I gave him some food, and I contacted the high country humane society. They can't go pick the dog up though, as Kayenta is reservation. The Navajo Reservation Animal control states on their website that they will euthanize stray animals so I don't want to call them.
If there is someone out there who would be willing to go pick the dog up and bring them to an animal shelter that would re-home it instead of euthanizing the dog, that dogs life will be changed. If I was any closer I would do it, but I am just so far away. Based on the fact that the dog was consistently in the parking lot both Wednesday and Saturday makes me think it is still there.
I am posting in flagstaff because it was the closest big city I could think of, but I am also open to other ideas for posting or something else to do to help this dog.

I'm on the market for a house (in a large Canadian city) and I'm wondering about home automation stuff. These houses are pretty old and would probably require some work.
What type of things would you look for and what things would you do to a house before moving in and then while living in it?
Some info about houses I've seen so far:
- Pretty old, some from 1850.
- Heating in some of them is with radiators (that I'm not particularly fun of) and in others is with heating baseboards. I'm thinking about installing HVAC/central heat pump instead, which could potentially be a large investment before moving in. Any thoughts on this?

Hey there! My fiance recently accepted a post-doc position at Stanford so we're going to be moving to the area in a couple months! I don't know that much about the Bay area since I've lived on the east coast my whole life and only visited SF once, so I have a million questions and I'd love any advice about choosing where to live, moving cross-country, and also how the area compares to Boston if there's any fellow Boston to SF folks on here! I'm on the job hunt now (engineer) but we're likely looking at living close to Stanford, and will probably make around $200k combined. We unfortunately won't be able to visit before moving although my fiance does have a friend in the area who said she'd be willing to check out places for us. It sounds like the rental market works quite differently there than in Boston, I've been told that places only go on the market about a month before move in? So if we're looking for a June 1 move in, can we really not start looking for apartments til May 1? Haha I'm so used to Boston where apartments get snapped up like 6 months before, it feels like there will be nothing left if we wait til a month out. Also, what are typical move-in fees there? We're looking for a 2 bed cat friendly place, and were hoping for a place around $3500/month. I've searched zillow a little bit in some areas people have mentioned to us (Redwood City and I think Los Altos) and there seem to be a decent number of places that are way less than that (like $2800ish for a 2 bed), does that sound right to folks who live there, or should I assume it's a scam or something? Also any advice for how to make friends in the area as a late twenties couple? Any other general advice about living in the area would be greatly appreciated! I'm a little stressed (though also very excited) about moving somewhere I really don't know that much about 😅 Thank you!!

I am trying to find papers/resources that discuss a knapsack problem where we want to maximize the value of items in the knapsack such that the **mean** of their weights is less than a constraint. This differs from the standard knapsack problem, which requires the sum of weights be less than a constraint. If the number of items was constant, I could just divide both sides by the number of items, N, but I am allowing for any number of items to go into the knapsack.
Here is two equations outlining the difference of what I mean. If equation 32 is a typical knapsack, then 33 is what I want. Apologies for any errors, I just wrote this out pretty quickly
Is there an easy way to reformulate this as a standard knapsack problem, or is anyone familiar with any resources/papers I can cite on this formulation of the problem? Am I overthinking this?
