On March 1, 2023, the oil and gas sector will reach CDN$ 40 billion, an 11% increase over 2022. A Bank of Montreal report states; Alberta’s share of investment is expected to be $28 billion this year, representing approximately 70 percent of Canada’s total. CAPP says that investment growth is mainly driven by conventional and oil sands sectors.
“A report issued by BMO Capital markets showed Canadian oil and natural gas producers have invested an average of $1.2 billion annually since 2012 into research and development, much of that focused on reducing emissions,” it said. “The report estimates in 2022 that investment rose to $1.4 billion and could exceed $2 billion by 2025.”
CAPP contends Canada’s upstream oil and natural gas industry is the largest investor in environmental protection, providing $3 billion annually toward initiatives such as biodiversity habitat protection, air quality management and water protection.
“The year 2023 may be one of the most pivotal moments in time for Canada’s oil and natural gas industry,” Baiton said. “With an emerging liquefied natural gas export industry, the expected completion of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and billions of dollars in emissions reduction investments waiting to be unlocked, Canada is positioned to play a much larger role in providing responsibly produced energy resources to the world.”

As noted initially, the growth in oil and gas exploration, demand and production will remain the same. The myriad uses in fuel and manufacturing—coupled with a significant increase in future CAPEX– bodes well for the sector.

Significant Local Business Opportunities: Blueberry First Nations
“The BC government breached the Treaty Rights of the Blueberry River First Nations, says a new provincial court ruling that could have sweeping implications for oil, gas, forestry and hydroelectric development in the northeastern part of the province.” (The Narwhal)
In 2015 Blueberry First Nations filed a court action against the BC Government. After some failures, the indigenous group was successful with a June 29, 2021, judgement.
“The justice ruled that the province must stop authorizing activities that breach the promises included in the Treaty but noted she’s (the Judge) prepared to suspend this declaration for six months “while the parties expeditiously negotiate changes to the regulatory regime that recognize and respect Treaty 8 Rights.” (The Narwhal)
“As part of the agreement, 195 forestry and oil and gas projects, authorized prior to the court decision and where activities have not yet started, will proceed. Twenty approved authorizations related to development activities in areas of high cultural importance will not proceed without further negotiation and agreement from Blueberry. The Province has provided notification to the respective permit holders.” (BC Government)
Judgement Results.

• The Treaty 8 Nations in BC are Blueberry River, Doig River, Fort Nelson, Halfway River, McLeod Lake, Prophet River, Saulteau and West Moberly First Nations. Blueberry River entered into the treaty in 1900.
• The Province is reimbursing Blueberry’s legal costs and disbursements.
• Lorne Brownsey has been appointed as the Province’s lead negotiator, and Bob Chamberlin as a special adviser to support the involvement of other Treaty 8 Nations, local governments and industry. Ratcliff LLP, as legal counsel, is assisting Blueberry River First Nations in the negotiations.

Apprentice Baurusuchus Magical Path Requirements: Beastmaster achievement “Best Friends”, Pet consumes 1x Peppered Steak, Growth > 100 Ability Unlock: Comet (120 second cooldown): Call down a magical strike from above. Deals magic damage in a circular area at range, and inflicts Irradiate for 90 seconds, dealing minor damage over time and reducing enemy DAM rating by 10%.
My original objective had been to go for a pet that was more powerful than me in order to carry me to greatness. Now it seemed that I had a pet weaker than me that needed my support to grow into something powerful. Its stats were mostly lower than mine, and it appeared that the pet didn’t have any achievements to shore up its abilities.
At the very least, it looked like it wouldn’t be long before I could make the creature into something powerful. Making my friend into a scaly little artillery piece or a fearsome area denial monster sounded like a lot of fun. It was just a shame that it was going to be a long-term goal instead of something I would benefit from now.
As usual, the system didn’t give me enough information. I didn’t know how to get those achievements, how to find or make those food items, or how the Growth mechanic worked. But, also as usual, I would figure it out. It might have been sampling bias, but I had adapted to all the weirdness the system had thrown at me so far. It would just take time for me to figure out this new stuff.
At the very least, the creature’s abilities were very promising. Affecting DEF and DAM ratings directly was tremendously powerful with the way the damage formula worked in this system. With Howl active, I might even be able to hack through the alpha’s thick hide. Not to mention the ability to share that buff with all my friends. And if I could grow it up to the next stage, cutting enemy DEF or DAM would make them significantly less effective combatants.
I felt a tickle of an urge to find new pets and see what options they would offer. Would an adult Aurochs have options for growth to develop its abilities? What abilities would it have? How about skills?
Without more Stable slots, I couldn’t investigate right now. But I was excited for the possibilities.
Either way, my Challenge was complete. There was a satisfying sensation as the system rewarded me for stealing my first pet from the Mandrill camp.
For its part, the critter puffed up with a little bit of pride. All the uncertainty drained from its demeanor, and discomfort that I hadn’t even noticed it was feeling towards me. It might have been just my imagination—or the censer’s vapor escaping the room and letting my senses get a more accurate read—but the reptile seemed stronger and healthier now. As if becoming my pet had made it more powerful than it had been before.
More than that, though, when it communicated with me, it was much clearer and more understandable. It was less of a vague series of sensations, and a lot more like speech, even if it wasn’t verbal.
Power, the Baurusuchus said. Much power. Satisfying.
“There’s more where that came from,” I said, taking a quick peek out of the narrowly open door towards the Mandrill town. No sign of any patrols yet, but even with the vapor thinned as it was, my Detection skill wasn’t working. “But we need to get out of here without being seen if we want to collect it.”
Fish? the critter asked.
I looked down in my arms to find that I was hugging the wooden case of smoked fish to my chest. I didn’t even remember picking it up.
“Listen, bud, we need this,” I said quickly. “Adding you to the town’s population might be a hard sell, and having a big box of food is going to go a long way towards getting James on our side of that fight.”
Not arguing, the reptile said, conveying a grin to me without actually changing its expression. Fish good.
“Stay close to me on the way out,” I instructed. “This might get a little spicy.”
Experimentally, I activated Hide In Plain Sight. There was a tingle as the Teamwork passive did what I hoped it would, applying the effect to the Baby Baurusuchus as well. Though to my perspective, it was a clearly-visible shaded outline, the Hide In Plain Sight effect would make it much easier to sneak out of here.
A part of me wanted to make off with the censer as well as the fish. It would prove a useful tool back in Jamestown. But I simply couldn’t justify the risk. So long as the room was shrouded from Detection skills, the alpha would never know its prize was missing. I could be all the way back home before the Mandrills even knew I was here. That was worth more than a little alchemy toy.
Also my hands were full of a big box of fish. Don’t judge me.
There was also the matter of the jugs of Masquerade Poison. I could smuggle one or two out and still have plenty of ability to carry the fish. But I didn’t know if it would work without the censer, and it was a lot of risk to find out. There was no telling when the alpha would return.
As soon as the Baurusuchus crept down the ramp, I slid the door closed behind it.
I was glad the creature had Stealth skill already, so that I didn’t need to carefully instruct it to tread carefully. At the far end of the pen, the docile Aurochs barely seemed to notice us. That was a good sign. I was afraid that they might react poorly to a big toothy predator in their pen. Obviously, though, they identified that the baby reptile was not a threat to their near-impenetrable hides.
I considered jumping the fence again, but discarded the idea quickly. My new pet was pretty large, meeting me at the hip with its shoulders, but it didn’t have any Climb skill, and its low-slung body would make the effort an absolute mess. The pen had a crude wooden gate to the south, though.
It seemed silly now that the entrance was facing out of town. Obviously the entrance being on the north side of the pen would allow more security, making it harder to steal away with their livestock. But I’d long since recognized the purpose during past raids.
Once upon a time I’d considered riling up the aurochs for a diversion once by driving them through the town on a stampede. The powerful beasts would reduce the Mandrill’s homes to matchsticks in seconds, and take hours—if not days—for the primates to control and recover. But the gate pointing out of town meant that unless I busted through the thick clay brick wall, the hard-shelled cattle would only stomp around in the woods for a little while until they blundered into one of the Mandrill farms, calming down once they ate a little.
Now, though, the tables were turned. I was able to open the simple latch on the wooden gate, open it just a few feet wide for my new friend to slip out, and we were as good as gone, circling around the nearest farm and heading on a straight shot south, moving nice and slow to avoid lighting up any guards’ Detection skill, and leaving as little trail as possible.
“Alright,” I said, once I was confident that the only thing around us were forest-dwelling vermin and the distant creatures in the forest canopy above. “I think we need to settle one thing first, before we go any farther.”
Settle? the critter asked, giving me a curious look.
“Yeah. This is possibly the most important decision of your life, too,” I added, “besides choosing to join me.”
Decision, the reptile said, conveying to me that it wanted to help. Tell problem. Make decision.
“There’s one surefire way to make sure that nobody has a problem with you,” I said, holding up a finger. “Trust me, this works one hundred percent of the time on humans. We get this right, and everyone in Jamestown will love you.”
I pulled up to a stop and knelt down to look the critter in the eye. It stopped as well, meeting my eyes in return. Without proper meaning, it conveyed preparedness. It was ready to handle any task, so long as it could continue to be fed and grow stronger.
“You need a name,” I said at last.

The Porsche Macan compact SUV was updated last year. What didn’t change during that update is its fidelity to the Porsche brand’s sporty philosophy, this while the SUV offers more passenger and cargo space than the company’s legendary cars.

What's new for 2023?
Porsche has added a new version to its range. The Macan T (for Touring, not Turbo) is equipped with a Sport Chrono package that offers several driving modes as well as a hot start mode. Dark titanium 20-inch wheels add visual dynamics. Up front, the T's fascia is Agathe Grey, the same colour found on the contoured mirrors.

LED headlights are also standard and incorporate the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), which includes adaptive LED headlights that automatically adjust according to driving conditions. It allows for effective illumination of the road without the risk of blinding other drivers. There are also features such as cornering lights and automatic high beam function. The goal is to improve visibility and driving safety by adapting the lighting according to driving conditions.

At the rear, the four tailpipes and a large black diffuser are immediately noticeable.

The interior
Standard features include a 10.9-inch touchscreen, 10-speaker audio system and LED headlights. Overall, the standard equipment is limited, though. To get more, you have to open the big options catalog and start checking off items.

Our model had $10,900 worth of these options, including, among other things, heated front and rear seats, 20-inch wheels, a carbon elements for the interior, a dedicated fuel filler cap (at $190) and an adaptive suspension.
​
All that aside, the Macan is a beautiful, well-designed and well-built SUV. The quality of materials is impeccable and everything you touch is well-made. You're inside an exceptional environment and the materials, feel, comfort and soundproofing, even in this ‘lower-end’ Porsche, stand out from the competition.

The exterior
No change here since the introduction of the new model in 2022. The model is racy and gives off a fairly ‘sporty vehicle’ vibe. The wheels, which are firmly planted at the ends of the car, contribute to the model's sporty and rugged character.

Our tester had a very nice Speed Yellow paint job available only by special order... at $13,050! That's not cheap, and you should know that Porsche offers a total of 59 colour choices at that price. If you want to be a little more conservative, you can opt for two free colours that are white and black or 8 metallic colors at $790 each.

Safety and Technology
As mentioned, the Porsche Macan is a sporty looking SUV, and that's the case inside as well. And as mentioned, the list of options is very long. So, despite the high price of the entry-level Macan, many options that are usually included in other brands' models are not included here.

So, while you get ParkAssist, cruise control, lane departure warning and hill descent control, that's more or less where it ends. For everything else, check out the options list!

The drive
The T version of the Macan is powered by a 261-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. If you're looking for performance, don't bother. The S model with a 375-hp V6 engine is more for you.

That said, the Macan T with the base engine is very fun to drive. It has all the makings of a sports car. The 8-way adjustable front sport seats made of durable sport-Tex fabric and leatherette upholstery are very comfortable and supportive for front passengers. In the rear, the bench seat is also comfortable, although it’s not very deep. Legroom in the back is also quite limited.
​
Behind the wheel, however, there are many ways to have fun. The 7-speed PDK gearbox is a marvel! With the help of all-wheel drive, it's impossible to miss on dry roads. The little knob that engages the Sport mode available in the "T" version gives a boost to the 'little' engine.

We had the opportunity to drive through a storm that left nearly a foot of snow on the ground, and never have we felt as safe in such conditions as we did inside this Macan. With great tires, in this case Michelin Pilot, the car literally clings to the road.

We couldn't help but fiddle with the gas pedal to get the car going sideways several times on isolated roads where snowplows hadn't yet passed. There's no snow mode in the Macan, but the power is perfectly adequate on slippery roads.
​

For us, if you want to drive a Porsche Macan, stay with the basic version and add the premium package to have at least the benches and the heated steering wheel. The rest is just accessorizing.

What is the fuel consumption of the Porsche Macan 2023?
Officially, the 4-cylinder Macan consumes 12.2L/10 km city and 10.2 highway. In our case, with winter temperatures and a snowstorm during our week of testing, we finished at 13.2L/100 km, which is frankly high for a 4-cylinder.

The final word
The Macan T model we drove came in at $91,150, which is still a lot to ask for a Macan. The $65,000 base model is just as likely to meet your needs, if you’re set on driving a Porsche.

All the elements that make the brand what it is are in the Macan. Assembly quality, refinement and a dynamic driving experience are strong points of this SUV. The only disappointment has to do with the engine, more specifically its output. You may find that 260 hp a bit lacking, and you joy would be assured if only that number could be in the neighborhood of 300. That would have positioned the T variant as a very good value proposition, right between the entry-level Macan and the fiery S.
