As stated in the title I have a job opportunity but I am unsure of it. I was offered an interview for the VA as a rehabilitation counselor which my end game is to work at the VA as a counselor or the FBI (counselor or victim specialist).
I was given details about the job, in which I found out it's a contract job, for only three years as a counselor and then after the three years it's a 50/50 chance that they might keep me if they have the funding. My biggest concern is that I don't want to quit my job that I'm currently at since there is job security (currently working for the state) yet this is a huge risk I'm taking honestly. Has anyone here had a contract with the VA and where they able to stay once it was completed?

I went in last week to get a lump on the back of my head checked out. The nurse tells me it could just be an infected hair folicle. It's been giving me headaches and it gets inflammed at times. Doc comes in and humorously announces, "Looks like, uh, skin cancer!" with a little smirk. "We need to schedule the specialist, teleconference, they'll call you to set it up." The Doc and nurse just look at me with a blank face that says "Okay, go away now." My stomach turns and I start feeling light headed, I repeat what he tells me, "So I just wait for them to schedule me an appointment?" "Yeah." So I waited for a whole week for the scheduler and no call, then I get a letter on June 1st, dated May 25th, that says something like We've been unsuccessful in trying to contact you, please call this number to setup your specialist appointment or you will have to get a new referral. I was waiting all damn week. Anyways I set up an appointment and its at the end of June. Almost a whole month after the Doc told me I might have skin cancer. Lesson learned, I can't wait on the VA to take care of me, I'm 100% and it just feels like crap.

I just wanted to write a post about how grateful I am for the VA providers here in Maine. I see a lot of brothers and sisters posting about their frustrations and anger and I feel for you guys and wish I could help. But here, the mental health teams are incredible (this is where I need the most help). From psychiatry, to therapy, to substance abuse, every provider I've worked with has been phenomenal and I'm so damned grateful that I'm able to utilize and connect with them.
They helped me get 70%, quit my toxic ass jobs, find purpose in volunteering, they push me make positive decisions like moving forward with pushing for 100%. Hell, me and a peer support specialist are in the process of starting a leatherworking group in a VA focusing on recovery and ptsd help. It's incredible. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, but, it could be a hell of a lot worse.
Anyway, thanks for reading guys.

Easy to say one of the most dismissive people I've ever spoken to at the VA. She appeared to not have read anything other than my disabilities and my interests. She immediately told me nursing was a no-go because of lifting and standing requirements. (Wife is a nurse and I'm aware of the job duties expected).
She based this on my lower back requiring an RFA (very minor procedure) every 6-9 months. When I have this procedure done I can walk and stand and lift pretty well.
But she just says they won't approve it because it could aggravate it. No amount of speaking to her would change her mind. She told me to go back to the free website they use and find other jobs that it says would interest me (like the great recommendation of being a hearing aid specialist).
I'm not saying I'm dead set on nursing but when the only thing she can offer is a free website to find job interests, that's pathetic.
Now awaiting the letter to appeal, I guess.

I would like to reenlist in the reserves as an MA. I served 3 years in the army as a 19D-Cavalry Scout with one your to Afghanistan. Currently in the civilian world I’m a police officer with my bachelors. If I were to reenlist I would be drilling out of Norfolk. I’m currently rated 60% by the VA for PTSD (50%) and Tinnitus (10%). My question is will I be able to reenlist with my disability ratings or will be DQ’d from reenlistment.

I am looking for somewhere warmer closer to the ocean in the Southeast US. I lived in Florida (Panama City) as a young child - early 70's, and Norfolk, VA when I was in the Navy (I lived in Ghent). I will be working remote and making over $100k. I'm not much into the club/nightlife scene any more, but arts/museums, restaurants, good beaches would be nice. Eventual retirement goal is to buy a boat.

Might be a little long so please bare with me as I have some questions that I am confused about. (Back Story) Last April I opened a claim and submitted my doctors forms and submitted them for increase from 90% to 100%. Submitted everything and shortly after was set up with a doctor through the VES and did my my appointment. When the appointment started I stated that I went through all this and could they review what the VA approved doctor has written. It is so tough to talk about things and really effects my life every time. They told me they didn't have his DBQ or his recommendations and I ended up emailing it to them. As I was talking I began to blank out and I became robotic and just got through it even after I told her that I was having a hard staying on track and properly relaying my emotions. I spent the the previous couple months with my doctor and was emotionally drained and the last thing I wanted to do was fit all that into 60 minutes. A month or two or so after the appointment I found out my 70% PTSD was being decreased to 50% and my overall rating was now 80%. After speaking with my doctor he did another DBQ on the effect this has taken on me and suggested I do a HLR which I did. In April I received a letter saying that not changes were being made. Just figured F it and keep moving and haven't looked at the website since I got that letter. Yesterday when I got home there was a FedEx on the table from QTC. I opened it and it had a appointment for today 6/2 but no time and no website to have the meeting with. I called and said it was a record review and there was nothing I had to do as it was being done by a independent doctor. Went on the the website and it is now showing 2 different claims

Hello, I am brand new to Reddit so I apologize in advanced if there are threads similar or whatever. I just need advice from the veteran community. I served in the Marine Corps from 2008-2012 as a welder. I got stationed in Okinawa until 2010 and served the rest of my enlistment in Camp Lejeune. I never really went to medical my whole four years except for when I was close to getting out. I was doing platoon pt when I was having trouble breathing. I requested to go to medical and they sent me to a pulmonary specialist. They ran test and I think they said something along the lines of me having asthma. They gave me an inhaler and that was the end of that. During checking out I met with a VA counselor to handle my claim. I claimed the basic which were ringing, knee strains and a couple of other I can’t remember. A year after I had gotten out I got some letters in the mail for VA appointments but the letters got to me late so I was already late. I didn’t think nothing of it and just went about my life. So fast forward a year I started getting depressed with my first episode of my having suicidal thoughts. Nothing seemed to be going right since I’ve been out. Tried college and couldn’t finish. I can’t hold a job for more than a year. 2014 my brother took me to a VA clinic in Hawaii where I spoke to a, I want to say therapist? Where I expressed my current state of emotion. I had one session and I’ve never been back. Present day it seems like my life has gotten worse. I always stay inside my room and never want to go out. I get really nervous being around people now. I can’t explain it. I have trouble making friends. It’s a night and day difference from when I was in the military. I haven’t seen a doctor or dentist since over been out. The worse part is I’ve stopped talking to my old Marine corps brothers. I think the main reason is because I’ve lost direction. I forgot how to talk to people making me not want to talk to anyone, even family. There is more but that is the basic rundown. Thank you if you’ve read this far. hi everyone! i just got my MCAT score back today and need help with my school list. i'm also debating whether or not I should apply this cycle or retake the MCAT. here are my stats:
GA resident. Asian F. GPA: 4.0. MCAT: 512 (scored lower than 519 FL avg) :/
- Research: 1500+ hours (worked in 2 separate labs, 1 publication, 3 poster presentations, ongoing project with upcoming senior thesis)
- Clinical: 300+ hours (MA over the summer at primary care office in my hometown, volunteering in hospitals and specialist offices in college town)
- Shadowing: 200+ hours with family med, OB-GYN, dermatologist NP, neurologist, and vascular surgeon
- Community service and leadership: 700+ hours (most of my hours are for a leadership position in a service org, the rest is with volunteering with the homeless population and mentoring/tutoring elementary and middle school students in my college town)
- TA: completed 200 hours as a peer mentor for Honor college students & anticipated 200 hours TA for intro to Biochem class
- Award/Honors: Phi Beta Kappa, President's Gold Volunteer Service award, undergrad research scholarship from university
Family ties to CA, TX, NY, VA, MA, and FL. Prefer to stay in-state or in the Southern US close to family or to any of the states listed previously :) I'm interested in OB-GYN, surgery, or primary care so I want to keep my options open.
