New US CHAdeMO chargers in May 2023

2023.06.06 12:37 boutell New US CHAdeMO chargers in May 2023

Here are all of the new US CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
There were 124 "new" CHAdeMOs added in May. To put it in perspective, there were 112 CHAdeMO chargers added in April. I think the pace of CHAdeMO rollout has stabilized, while the pace of CCS rollout is still increasing. This makes sense given that only Nissan still makes a CHAdeMO car.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
We all know that CHAdeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or reading these monthly reports is just frustrating in your state, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications only when new stations actually open. You can sign up at evpov.com. I built it to help EV owners like myself (especially my fellow Leaf owners). You can pick other plug types as well.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

2023.06.06 12:32 boutell New US CCS chargers report for May 2023

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
  1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
  2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

Is East Brookline St safe enough?
I'm going to be attending NEU and I was looking at an apartment over here but I've read that the neighbouring area isn't really nice? Is East Brookline St far enough to be alright to live at? I consider being able to walk home alone around 10-11 pm safe. We're all guys for context. The apartment is around the marker in the screenshot.
I'm sure this question has been asked a lot of times but please reassure me if it makes sense 👉👈

2023.05.13 05:31 Spurs_are_shite Boston Rivian folks... Got a very specific question for you !

Has anyone here driven on Highland Ave in Somerville, MA? specifically the bit between highland Kitchen and Somerville High School ?
That stretch of road is the gnarliest road I have ever come across, (even more gnarly now that they have bug up every inch of it), probably in whole of Boston region (close second would probably be underpass beneath the Columbia circle roundabout in Dorchester, prior to "relaying").
What is it like ? How does the suspension hold up on these Somerville roads?

2023.05.09 07:56 VerbalK23 8 night well-researched first timer itinerary check for May 2023

Hi there! I appreciate any insight you all can provide over this itinerary. I know it seems like a lot, but this is how I do all of my trips. It may also seem over-planned, but I work backwards from ticketed events and activities so it makes sense how everything falls into place. With that said, I definitely am not afraid to change on a dime and scrap/alter the plan. This is my first time in the city and my goal is to experience as much as I reasonably can. So, with no further adieu:

Wednesday, 5/10: Arrival
-Land at LGA at 4:35, bus to hostel in UWS, check in by 6pm or so. Grab a slice at Mama's Too and another at Sal and Carmine, then on the Subway to get to the Fat Black Pussycat for a 7:35 show (reservation made). Grab some falafel or something from Mamoun's, then head back to the hostel to call it a night.

Thursday:
-I realized my body will still feel on Vegas time when I plan to start my day at roughly 7am. Oh well.
-Subway to 9/11 Museum for 8am Early Access tour, with quick breakfast beforehand at Stage Door Delicatessen. I figure I will be at the museum for about 3 hours, leaving at roughly 11 am.
-Explore FiDi on way to Chinatown. Bits of lunch at various places (Golden Steamer, Wah Fung, Xi'an Famous). Explore Chinatown.
-New York Media Boat tour at 2:30, leaves near 9/11 museum so a bit of a backtrack.
-After boat, take Subway to Times Square for Free live music with Jazz at Lincoln Center show at 5 pm.
- Around the corner to Shubert Theater for 7 pm Some Like I Hot show.
-Explore and then back to hostel for bed.

Friday: Bronx Day
-Explore UWS a bit and then grab Absolute Bagel for quick breakfast before heading to NYBG.
-Few hours at the Botanical Garden, then head over to Arthur Avenue. Thinking a sandwich at Casa Della Mozzarella or perhaps some sit down pasta. Check out the Arthur Ave Retail Market. Explore for a while.
-Universal Hip Hop Museum.
-Yankees game for Star Wars Night (As a Cubs fan, I need that Rizzo bobblehead)
-Back to Manhattan, maybe walk around for a bit then bed.

Saturday:
-Quick breakfast from Broadway Bagel or a bodega or something. Pay homage at The Dakota and Strawberry Fields. The rest of this morning is dedicated to exploring the central and southern parts of Central Park.
-Thinking a late lunch at Cafe Sabarsky, then over to the Met. The rest of the evening is dedicated to the Met.
-Probably some jazz somewhere after the Met. Maybe go check out Washington Square Park and the Jazz Alley over there. Some halal cart at some point.

Sunday:
-Walk the High Line, check out Chelsea Market and Hudson Yards on either end.
-Sleep No More at 2 pm. Gallow Green for drink and a nibble after.
-Explore the area, then head to Birdland Jazz Club for Arturo O'Farrill and the Latin Jazz Ensemble until 10pm.
-Explore a bit more, then back to the hostel.

Monday:
-This is a busy day.
-Head first to the ferry station on 34th St for the East River Ferry to DUMBO. Quick breakfast at Butler.
-Walk the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Head to Prospect Park, walk the park loop.
-Back to DUMBO for Juliana's Pizza at opening. Harriet's Rooftop or Time Out Market for a rooftop view. Ice cream at Sugar Hill Creamery or Van Leeuwen or Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.
-Walk back to Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge. Head to Nolita area. Economy Candy, Granny Za's Dispensary, Elizabeth Street Garden, then Parisi's for a Dennis sandwich.
-5 pm Walk on the Wild Side music tour booked: Post-Punk, Disco, and Hip Hop ending in Tribeca.
-Sightseeing at Staple St Skybridge and Ghostbusters HQ.
-Dinner burger at Emily West Village. More ice cream at Cones. I realize it looks like I am eating an awful lot on this day especially. I will be putting in the work to earn it, plus I don't have to finish everything. I just want to try a lot of delicious things.
-10pm Vanguard Jazz Orchestra show at Village Vanguard.
-BED.

Tuesday:
-St. Patrick's' Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, some other sights over that way.
-MoMA for a few hours.
-Bengal Tiger for lunch.
-Check out The Plaza hotel.
-Kill some time, back to the hostel for a bit to change and rest.
-7pm Hadestown show.
-Explore somewhere or catch some jazz/comedy before heading back to hostel.

Wednesday:
-Chysler Building (probably can't access lobby nowadays). Grand Central Terminal and Market. Summit One Vanderbilt.
-Guided 11am tour at NYPL.
-Lunch at KJUN.
-One more Broadway show. I am thinking Life of Pi to switch things up from the musicals.
-Back to the hostel for a quick change.
-Dinner at Keen's, the pass by the Empire State on the way to Tannen's Magic Shop for Magic After Hours.
-Birdland Jazz once again for Big Chief Donald Harrison's 9:30pm show.
-Back to the hostel to pack and rest for departure tomorrow.

Thursday:
-Quick bite at Hungarian Pastry Shop north of the hostel towards Harlem. Then tour St. John the Divine cathedral.
-Possibly explore a bit in Harlem or more likely the Northern part of Central Park.
-Grab bags from hostel, head to NY Pizza Suprema right next to the bus station for a slice or two before heading out of town to Washington DC for the second part of my trip.
Well, what do you think? What would you change? Like I said, I know it's a lot, but I've looked painstakingly at geography, transit times, all of it. I use a fabulous app called Wanderlog for creating my plan and it's been a real game changer for me. You can't control for everything, but I feel good about the plan in general. Things will inevitably change. That's OK.
Thanks for reading!

2023.05.08 20:27 witchybella Elevator Certificate

Elevator Certificate
Ignoring the fact that this is past expiration because I’ve seen that sometimes they do the inspection and management just doesn’t put a new certificate in, anyone know what the red circle means? This elevator in my building has constant problems (sudden movements, going down a few inches when reaching the first floor then the door opens and the elevator moves back up to be flush with the floor, etc.). Management said a few weeks back that the elevator would be closed to put new flooring in, but it just simply wasn’t closed and there is no new flooring.

2023.05.01 03:42 chasingwhims Commute Advice - Ruggles to Center Plaza

After seeing all the bike infrastructure popping up around the city, I finally took the plunge and bought a bike. And I'm loving it! It's so freeing, and I very much need the exercise lol.
It's my first time biking in 15 years because I was always too nervous to do so in a city. I'm already using my bike instead of the T for most of my routine, but I'd appreciate some advice on my work commute. I take SW Corridor Park to Ruggles... then I'm not sure what's safest.
https://preview.redd.it/ekfvhpkkh4xa1.png?width=859&format=png&auto=webp&s=237a768469b9e662c07d64de50797bb3c36a828b
  1. (Red) Google maps suggests taking Columbus, then Mass Ave, then the Charles River path, then Cambridge Street. I practiced this route and, even on a Sunday morning, I was too uncomfortable for much of Mass Ave, and all of Cambridge Street. I had to walk most of Cambridge Street.
  2. (Purple) The Boston Bike to Work Day suggests taking Columbus all the way to Stuart, then up Washington to City Hall. I know Columbus is a wide street, but it doesn't always have a bike lane, and it's probably busy on weekdays. (Also, are we always allowed to bike on City Hall Plaza, or is it just open for Bike to Work Day? I thought it might be a Business District where you can't ride. I'd much rather cut across the plaza than touch Court Street though.)
  3. (Blue) The safest route I can think of is leaving Columbus early on to take the Back Bay SW Corridor Park to Back Bay Station, then take Dartmouth to Boylston, where it eventually leads to flex post bike lanes down to Washington. The only tricky part is Dartmouth and the first half of Boylston.
Any other suggestions? I don't mind taking a bit longer if it means a safer side street or protected lane or no parked cars that can door me. Though every time I take the T to work, I think to myself that getting doored or right hooked is worth it...
Side questions - On one way streets with no bike lane, are you supposed to always bike on the right? I know the pop up COVID Boylston Street bike lanes were on the left side, and if I'm eventually turning left, it seems safer to bike on the left side from the start.
Would switching my work schedule to 8 - 4 instead of 9 - 5 help?

2023.04.22 22:43 Honestly_ Top-10 Most Wanted Buildings *WITHOUT* Replicas (plus a bunch of others that would be nice to see)

Obviously this is subjective, but I think these ten would make magnificent additions to any replica collection/skyline.

Top-10:

  1. Boston City Hall (image gallery)
  2. The Beehive, Wellington (image gallery)
  3. Oslo City Hall (image gallery)
  4. 550 Madison Ave (former AT&T Building), NYC (image gallery)
  5. Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis (image gallery)
  6. Shizuoka Press and Broadcasting Center, Tokyo (image gallery)
  7. Woodbury County Courthouse, Sioux City (image gallery)
  8. VIA 57 West Apartments, NYC (image gallery)
  9. Rainier Tower, Seattle (image gallery)
  10. Bonaventure Hotel, Los Angeles (image gallery)
(somewhat in preferential order)
If I had my druthers, I would be impressed if InFocusTech (aka Replica Buildings) made them since they do a solid job of accuracy.
Table of other buildings (in no particular order, though initially grouped by architects), including more details on those above:

Omniturm Frankfort Germany 2017-19 Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) 620ft Mixed-use tower noted for its "swing" halfway up the building, where the spiral axis shift from the center to create terraces for the living area between the 14th and 23rd floors; biggest shift is 16ft.
Torre Latinoamericana Mexico City Mexico 1949-56 Augusto H. Álvarez Roof: 545ft; Spire: 597ft World's first major skyscraper successfully built on highly active seismic zone; landmark at the edge of historic core; was tallest in Mexico until 1982.

Arcos Bosques Tower I Mexico City Mexico 1993-96 Teodoro González de León 530ft The design of two parallel columns joined at the top by a 4-story lintel led to this structure being nicknamed El Pantalón ("The Trousers").
Arcos Bosques Tower II Mexico City Mexico 2005-08 Teodoro González de León 532ft Similar exterior facade to Tower I, but a significantly different design with the connection of the towers midway up the building.
St. Mary's Cathedral Tokyo Japan 1964 Kenzo Tange Associates Church: 129ft; Tower: 202ft The layout of the building is in the form of a cross, from which eight hyperbolic parabolas open upwards to form a cross of light, which continues vertically along the length of the four facades.
Shizuoka Press and Broadcasting Center Tokyo Japan 1967 Kenzo Tange Associates 187ft Interesting, surviving example of Japan's Metabolist movement; built on a small triangular site, and erected around a column 25 ft in diameter, which forms the building's central core, and around which thirteen individual offices are connected asymmetrically.
One Raffles Place Tower 1 Singapore Singapore 1982-86 Kenzo Tange Associates 911ft Originally named OUB Centre; designed with two triangular structures with a small space between them; Tallest building in Singapore from 1986–2016.
Shinjuku Park Tower Tokyo Japan Kenzo Tange Associates 771ft Designed to complement Tange's neighboring Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings #1 (1988-90) and #2; the top has the Park Hyatt Tokyo hotel made famous by the film Lost in Translation.

OCBC Centre Singapore Singapore 1975-76 Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (I.M. Pei) 649ft The Brutalist design has the interesting massing of office space on the exterior; has some thematic refinements from the firm's 177 Huntington (1972-73) building in Boston (originally built as the Christian Science Administration Building).
Miami Tower Miami USA 1983-87 Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (I.M. Pei) 625ft Previously known as Bank of America Tower; the facade that faces the water steps back three times on a gently curved facade. Noted for being the first building to ever connect to an elevated mass transit system.
Soyak Kristalkule Istanbul Turkey 2005-16 Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (I.M. Pei) 558ft Prismatic form for headquarters of QNB Finansbank.
Fuji Xerox Towers Singapore Singapore 1987 Alfred Wong Partnership (AWP) 541 Originally IBM Towers. Unique form with a tower with large opening midway up; the lower section extended past the tower to create an L-shape profile; the tower is framed by dramatic windowless bookends. Demolished in 2023.
Portland Building Portland, OR USA 1980-82 Michael Graves 231ft Highly significant example of postmodern architecture, rejecting Modernist principles to be less "boring" in the words of then-Mayor Frank Ivancie. The design has been much-discussed; Philip Johnson (on the selection committee) loved it, Portland-native Pietro Belluschi hated it.
Monadnock Building Chicago USA 1891; 1893 Burnham & Root (1891) and Holabird & Roche (1893) 215ft The two phases of this building reflect changes in an important era of engineering and architectural change: northern half still partly relies on load-bearing masonry walls (that are 6ft wide at the bottom) but has a modernistic stripped-down facade; the southern half relies on modern metal frame construction but has traditional ornamentation.
Cincinnati Union Terminal Cincinnati USA 1928-33 Fellheimer & Wagner 106ft Art Deco train station with a half-dome; inspired by Eliel Saarinen's Art Nouveau Helsinki Central Station.
Woodbury County Courthouse Sioux City USA 1916-18 Purcell & Elmslie and William L. Steele 157ft Large, Prairie Style building with tower.
Century Plaza Towers Los Angeles USA 1972-75 Yamasaki & Associates 571ft Twin towers are a landmark anchor of Century City and resemble Yamasaki's NYC WTC on triangular footprints.
Rainier Tower Seattle USA 1977 Yamasaki & Associates 514ft Built on a 121ft concrete pedestal that tapers down towards the ground level, like a vase or a golf tee.
Guthrie Theater Minneapolis USA 2003-06 Jean Nouvel 154ft Icon replacing an icon; after the original 1963 award-winning building by Ralph Rapson was not maintained, abandoned, and demolished in 2006, this $125M managed to make people forget with its bold blue forms and dramatically cantilevered "endless bridge"

Training

I've been running for under 5 years. Completed C25K in Fall 2018 and ran my first 5K in July 2019 after losing 100 lbs.
I didn't run much if at all this winter. Got injured back in December and that plus the weather kept me out of commission until late Feb. Since then I've been focusing on mostly 2-3 mile runs with one 15K just because it was a Garmin challenge in March and to see if I could still do it.
I was roughly following a three runs per week plan. One speed work (intervals) run, one at race pace (usually my Parkrun) and one at ~9-10 min/mi to keep my heart rate ~145.
So far this year I've typically been right around 26 min for my local Parkrun (my PB is 23:26, and I had a single run below 25 so far this year).
I'm working a couple of charity 100 mi (walk/run) fundraisers for April so I've been averaging 5-6 miles covered every day.
This year I mostly ran in the Emerald Necklace, rather than running the actual course as I did last year.

Pre-race

Since the MBTA has been a mess recently my non-running partner and I set out to leave home at 6:30 to get me to the corrals at 7:30. Got to Arlington at 6:43, and made our way to Charles St, Picked up my T-shirt and headed to the Distance Medley tent. This time they weren't letting any guests in so I just grabbed a banana and coffee and went back to rejoin my partner outside the DM area.
Since we were still wicked early we walked down to see the new "Embrace" MLK statue and found it much nicer than many of the pictures that have been published. I thought it was really quite lovely.
Back to the corrals at 7:25, when I sent her off to get her tea at Starbucks so she could take her usual spot on Boylston. I was assigned to Wave 1 and took my place in the ~8 min/mile section. at ~7:40 we all started to push up and I stayed with everyone around me, yet somehow I still didn't make it to Charles St. until the Wave 2 start at ~8:20 when the professional runners were just making their way back.
I have my FitBit on my right wrist showing heart rate and my Garmin on the left showing lap pace and total distance.

Race

And we're off! It's almost impossible to move at speed on Charles St., but fortunately things open up a bit on Boylston. Wave to my partner. Still a slog until we get up to Comm Ave. Feeling pretty good by the time we get to mile 1 and the tunnel under Mass Ave. Charlesgate looms ahead and the dreaded hairpin U-turn. Makes it almost impossible to PR (for me at least).
Back in the tunnel and in the home stretch of the Marathon Course to Mile 2. Still feeling pretty good, but getting mixed messages from the Garmin. My pace around mile 2 was right around 8:45.
I love running through the Marathon finish line despite the "Welcome to the BAA 5K. This is NOT the finish line. 0.7 mi to go" sign. Such a blast! Kick it up into high gear now that I know I'm in the home stretch. See my partner again on Boylston and blow her a kiss. She tells me I'm making great time and to keep running! Sprint the last quarter mile.

Post-race

Misremembered my time from 2022 and thought I was 1 second slower than last year when it actually turns out I was 11 seconds faster! (24:20 was my best Parkrun time in '22, not the BAA at 24:32). Stretch goal achieved! This is my fastest chip timed race!
Back to the DM tent for pictures and snacks. Since my partner couldn't come in we didn't stay long and headed off to a quick brunch in the area before hopping back on the T at Copley to get home.
Later in the afternoon, I made my way back to Hynes to drop into the Marathon Expo which I found very disappointing this year.
Still looking forward to watching the big race on Monday, and looking forward to the 10 K in June. I just hope it isn't as hot as it was last year!

2023.04.11 19:52 verooooo18 Moving to Jamaica Plain

I am starting my PhD at NEU and am looking to move to the Boston area, have never stepped foot in MA. Jamaica Plain is near my center and the rent seems reasonable. Anything I should be aware of before continuing with an apartment application? The apartment would be on S. Huntington Ave. if that helps! Thank you so much.
