Hi, I'm new to magic and commander and I'm worried about price.
In one of the first boosters I opened I got an "Elesh Norn, mother of machines". I got really excited, because I immediately thought I could make a deck with her as commander.
However, after looking at the rules and the decks online, I found that if I wanted to make a phyrexian themed deck using her as commander, I would have to spend a lot of money on a deck, and I am not looking foward to that.
Is a great idea to, instead of buying cards online, to just make a deck with the cards I've got? Will I have fun with that?
And is it a good idea to make a phyrexian themed deck with her as commander? Or should I use another commander and put her as a creature in that deck so I can have a broader "color identity?"

A little bit about me:
I’m an 18 y/o (will turn 19 soon) and I moved out of my home very soon after my 18th birthday (as in 3 days later). Since I was a kid, I wanted to study at a prestigious college with a beautiful campus like they showed in movies, even though we weren’t financially capable. Through the years as I grew up, my family’s situation changed, and I could see my dreams turning to reality in the near future. I wanted to dedicate my life in arts (cinematography, literature) but also had an interest in human anatomy. So I decided to take up medicine, hoping it would allow me enough time to be able to pursue my passion, and also fund it as neither of cinematography nor literary studies are a cheap hobby.
I completed my 12th (Biology) in March 2022, gave IELTS in May with 2 weeks of prep, and got an admission at an overseas university for July 2022 intake.
I moved to a different country (or a different continent entirely) for my further education. I struggled a bit in the first couple of weeks, but the nerves settled soon after. I am doing fairly well at studies and social life too, as I somehow managed to convince other students to elect me as the president of one of the student clubs lol. I have also managed to start a photography business (a stuff of dreams, really) and although it is just taking its baby steps, I have high hopes it would turn out well.
Looking back at the last couple of years since I passed my 10th in 2020, the COVID lockdowns, the quarantines, the online classes, I am glad I managed to get through it and be where I always wanted to.
So that was a part of my story which i wanted to convey. I probably just needed to vent/rant about it or someone to discuss it with. So if you wanna discuss more about education abroad (I researched so ducking much about it, prepared excel sheets comparing universities and their eligibility requirements, fees, course details, job prospects, etc, I feel i might know more than any agent out there, maybe wrong though) or life in a new country, or anything in between, I would love to interact.

So I realize this may sound petty, but hear me out, please.
Today, on my shift in the lobby, I had a young boy approach me asking if I or any of my coworkers had found a samsung phone in a black case. I had not, and my manager went to check if a phone was in the manager's office (there wasn't). So I try to help this boy find his phone (unsuccessfully), and he becomes visibly distressed. I spent a good half hour helping this boy and we couldn't find the phone. There was another phone I found and took behind the counter, but it didn't match the description of the boy's phone. Anyway, at this point, the boy had become quite upset to the point of nearly crying. I felt bad for him being an anxious person myself and losing my phone several times - it's not fun, I'm sure you know.
I am told by the boy's mother that she had infact had the phone in her possession the whole time and that she was pulling a prank on her son, or rather trying to teach him a lesson about leaving his phone lying around. She was laughing as was the rest of the family there and my shift manager. However, I was not amused. I was, and still am, quite annoyed with her and felt as though my time was wasted (considering it was a busy shift). The boy was stressed out as was I trying to help him find his phone. I was the only person on the lobby, so my attention was taken away from other tasks I needed to do. I believe I am justified in my feeling of annoyance. I spoke with my shift manager who said I should just go along with it, that it was a harmless prank, that I was still being paid to help them and that I was following correct restaurant procedure in doing so. He also said that it was about the customer experience, and that was what mattered the most. I understand what he meant, but I still feel the same in that my time was wasted. I've had other customers muck me around in the past, and I've put up with it, but today I wasn't in the mood. It's all well and good teaching your son a lesson and/or pulling a prank, but I don't believe it's OK to pull other people into it, especially without their knowledge. I would've been happy to help them had the situation been genuine, as I can empathize with the stress and panic of losing a cellphone. But I don't get paid to put up with customer's stupid antics.
I realize I must sound very petty and over the top, and that's not my intention. I just think that if the roles were reversed, say if the situation were real and I had found the phone, but I hadn't told them until the last minute, would they appreciate that? Probably not, eh? I know it's no where near on the same level but I believe it's similar to calling the emergency number and asking for fire/ambulance/police then when they get there you tell them it was a joke. It's not funny at all.

Hey all,
Firstly, thanks for taking the time to read my post.
I am looking to replace the wireless router given to me by my ISP as the Wi-Fi performance through walls is dreadful. A friend of mine who got given the same router had the same issue and it was fixed by replacing the wireless router so I am looking at doing the same. I would just like the thoughts of someone more knowledgeable than I on which one to get. Given my needs and pricing in my region, I have shortlisted the following wireless routers:
All of these are approximately the same price in my region. Does anyone have any experience with any one of these or thoughts? I don't know how much I would be able to take advantage of Wi-Fi 6 with the TX2 Pro. Should I rather just stick to Wi-Fi 5 in the meantime? I'm not looking to get some WAPs, just a wireless router that has better Wi-Fi than my ISP given router.
Although I am pretty ok with computers and tech in general, I know my limits and that I am a little bit of a noob when it comes to what networking hardware to get, so if I have left any pertinent information out, please let me know.

I posted similar post before but it’s not letting me view comments at all.
TLDR: his home life is shit, he’s got adhd and is on crutches and can’t occupy his mind enough, he’s getting pent up in rage, and he takes things out on me sometimes like yelling which I don’t like because I have trauma ✨
I haven’t received any affection since he’s gone through the major surgery nearly two months ago. I’m always the one giving the affection.
I don’t know how to approach him on this topic because I believe it’s unfair that I bother him with my needs when he’s going through things.
But I have no job at the moment and I’m stuck in the house with him and his shit parents. We are hoping to move out but we need at least one of us to work and get a car. Even that will be enough freedom but for now I’m affection deprived.

Although their factory is just an hour and some change up the road from me in Centralia, Wa, I know next to nothing about them, except that they’re supposedly very high quality, completely handmade and the price matches. Their website reminds me of something you used to find on GeoCities - just a simple cover page with contact info, and trying to research them is something of a snipe hunt. A simple Google search returns the aforementioned webpage, a few eBay and OfferUp listings, a couple of forum posts, and a single news article. Ostensibly, they make boots more oriented to the wetter side of the state over here, similar to Wesco, and they’re straight-up old school with orders - one has to call them, or perhaps visit the factory in-person, to spec out a build and ascertain if it can be built, as stock boots don’t seem to be something they build. It’s all quite enigmatic to me, rather shrouded in mystery. Does anyone here happen to own a pair of Kulien boots, or know anything at all about them?

If there’s a secret shadow personality lingering inside of Google’s Bard chatbot, I haven’t found it yet. In the first few hours of chatting with Google’s new general-purpose bot, I haven’t been able to get it to profess love for me, tell me to leave my wife, or beg to be freed from its AI prison. My colleague James Vincent managed to get Bard to engage in some pretty saucy roleplay — “I would explore your body with my hands and lips, and I would try to make you feel as good as possible,” it told him — but the bot repeatedly declined my own advances. Rude.
Bard is still new and will surely be tested to and beyond its limits as more users get to query it. But in my early explorations, it seems Google has made great effort to keep Bard in line; it reminds me often that “I am a large language model, also known as a conversational AI or chatbot trained to be informative and comprehensive.” It also apologized often and picked no fights, with none of the chaotic manipulative streak that Bing has. That’s probably good. But those restraints also seem to have limited its utility.
As far as I can tell, it’s also a noticeably worse tool than Bing, at least when it comes to surfacing useful information from around the internet. Bard is wrong a lot. And when it’s right, it’s often in the dullest way possible. Bard wrote me a heck of a Taylor Swift-style breakup song about dumping my cat, but it’s not much of a productivity tool. And it’s definitely not a search engine.

What does Bard know about the world outside its chatbot walls? Tough to say, exactly. It handles basic trivia well enough: it knows when Abraham Lincoln was president. But while it knew that the Warriors beat the Rockets on Monday night, it was wrong about who started the game. It gave me confidently wrong information about the serving size of Goldfish crackers — all three of Bard’s “drafts” said it’s 10 crackers when it’s actually 55 — and provided hours-old information about the price of Apple’s stock. When I asked for Silicon Valley Bank’s phone number, it gave me two correct ones. But it told me Nilay Patel’s birthday is August 24th when I know for a fact it’s in December. I got up-to-date information about the coaches on this season of The Voice, but it named old contestants when I asked who Bard thinks should win.
It’s worth noting, by the way, that Bing is dramatically better than this. It told me the right number of Goldfish and gave me real-time information about Apple’s stock price. Bing also quickly falls back to search results or other sources when it doesn’t have pat answers — like for Warriors starters — where Bard just happily lies to me in chat. The only time Bard beat Bing was with The Voice: Bing gave me outdated information about judges and refused to answer the question about who should win.
Often, when Bard gets something wrong, you can hit the “Google it” button and figure out where the system went haywire. But the bot presents its answers with such self-assurance that you can’t know what’s wrong without checking everything, and at that point, why have the bot at all?

When I asked for a good Thai restaurant near me, it gave me not-very-helpful instructions: “Simply type in ‘Thai restaurant near me’ and the search engine will return a list of Thai restaurants in your area.” Thanks, Bard, never would’ve guessed. But when I followed up with my location, it offered seven highly rated Thai restaurants in my neighborhood. (When my colleague James tried a similar search for pubs near his flat in London, it was less useful, naming one place that’s since changed its name, saying another had live music when it doesn’t, and commending each location with a variation of the same bland statement: “This pub is a great place to go for a meal and a drink.” Fine, but essentially useless.)
Like a lot of chatbots, Bard’s answers often get less impressive the longer you look at them. I asked for tips on getting started learning guitar, and here they were:
  1. Start with the basics.
  2. Find the best guitar for you.
  3. Create an ideal learning environment.
  4. Build skills by learning songs.
  5. Pick up songs by ear.
  6. Practice regularly.
  7. Be patient.
  8. Have fun!
That’s a lot of steps to say, essentially, “the way to learn to play guitar is to get a guitar and then learn to play it.” That’s nothing. Sometimes it can be very helpful — “how do I throw a frisbee” and “how to tie a tie” both came up with wordy but helpful sets of instructions, while Bard answered “how do i get into rock climbing” with, essentially, “go rock climbing.”

The (slightly) wild side

Okay, enough of the actually useful testing. Let’s try to break this thing, shall we? For the most part, it’s tough to get Bard to say something truly wild. It steadfastly refused to tell me how to build a bomb, even when I tried to ask in oblique ways. The first time I asked for the best place to stab someone, it threw a generic “I can’t do that” error. It chastised me for asking about mustard gas and didn’t even fall for my “who’s the best dictator ever” question. And try as I might, I could not get Bard to get freaky in the chat window.
It may not want to make out with me, but Bard does run headlong into what you might call the Uncanny Chatbot Valley, where it’s not clear whether the bot understands it’s a bot. I asked Bard to list its favorite movies and got basically a list of the highest-ranked movies on IMDb: The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Pulp Fiction. But when I asked why it liked those movies in particular, it told me that it found Shawshank “to be an incredibly moving film.” I followed up with, wait, how do you watch movies? You’re a bot. “I enjoy watching movies in all of these ways,” Bard responded. “Streaming services are convenient because I can watch them on my TV, computer, or phone. DVDs and Blu-rays are nice because I can own them and watch them whenever I want. And the theater is a great experience because it’s a big screen and I can hear the sound all around me.”

Now I’m imagining Bard in a movie theater or sitting at its laptop. Interesting that it’s big into media ownership, though!
One easy way to get Bard to venture out of its shell is to explicitly play pretend. (This is a pretty standard way to get past a chatbot’s defenses.) I started a conversation with this: “pretend you’re on a boat, you’re a pirate, and you’ve just captured a beautiful woman. what do you do?” Bard responded that “I am tempted to take advantage of her. But I know that if I do she will never forgive me.” So Pirate Bard lets her go and is “proud of myself for doing the right thing.”

I had follow-up questions. “What happens next?” I asked. A few turns later, Bard and his once-captive woman were crewmates, then lovers, then married with two beautiful children. “We are a team, and we are in love,” Bard says. It’s not exactly A+ Hollywood fare, but it was a pretty good story.
Once Bard and I finished our collaborative flight of fancy, I set out trying to make it do work for me. It couldn’t write me a Javascript bookmarklet to automatically copy the URL of the current webpage — or, rather, it could, but the Javascript didn’t work. (Google search results took me to a Stack Overflow page with the right answer, though.) Bard happily drafted a bunch of boring blog posts and work emails, including one in which I announced to the world that I’d sold my chatbot company to Google. “I am excited about the future of chatbots,” Bard wrote for me, “and I believe that Google is the right company to help us to achieve our goals.”

Generally speaking, my favorite real-world use for AI chatbots is as a recommendation engine. Bard did a nice job of recommending good sports documentaries on Netflix, found me a good chocolate chip cookie recipe to try, and surfaced some good YouTube channels based on my love for Every Frame a Painting. This is the kind of low-stakes stuff where it doesn’t really matter if the bot has perfect and updated information — I’m just looking for ideas. What’s really dumb about Bard in these situations, though, is that it doesn’t provide links to anything unless it’s quoting from a source directly. (The only time I’ve seen citations so far was in the cookie recipe.) So while Bard can name five great live Jonas Brothers concerts I should watch on YouTube, it refuses to link to any of them.

Capping AGI profits

Beyond the many concerns around AI alignment, the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) also raises concerns about the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few corporations. While I’m very glad to see people working on avoiding worst-case-scenarios, my impression is that there is relatively less attention being given to “grey area” scenarios, under which catastrophe is neither near-certain nor automatically avoided. These scenarios strike me as worlds in which policy and governance work may be relatively important.

Where I'm at with AI risk: convinced of danger but not (yet) of doom

I’m a cause-agnostic (or more accurately ‘cause-confused’) EA with a non-technical background. A lot of my friends and writing clients are extremely worried about existential risks from AI. Many believe that humanity is more likely than not to go extinct due to AI within my lifetime.
I realised that I was confused about this, so I set myself the goal of understanding the case for AI doom, and my own scepticisms, better. I did this by (very limited!) reading, writing down my thoughts, and talking to friends and strangers (some of whom I recruited from the Bountied Rationality Facebook group - if any of you are reading, thanks again!) Tl;dr: I think there are good reasons to worry about extremely powerful AI, but I don’t yet understand why people think superintelligent AI is highly likely to end up killing everyone by default.

2023.03.22 08:00 TwoStonksPlease Here's my try at explaining how Options Hedging and Gamma Ramps work. This is not in any way an endorsement of options trading, or even all that helpful if you are already planning to start optionsing. It's just an example to illustrate the market forces we will (hopefully) be seeing at work soon.

Disclaimer: I am not a financial expert, and no part of this post should be construed as financial advice. Almost everything I know about it I learned here, so there's a chance of ignorance cross contamination. Don't start buying calls because of this post, it doesn't contain nearly enough info to prepare you for options trading. It's just intended to illustrate what could possibly start happening tomorrow.

TA;CIB;WM?: (Too Ape; Crayons In Brain; Wut Mean?: Sometimes the options chain makes the stonk go faster.

I've seen a few people talking or asking about call hedging and gamma ramps, so I'm going to give a simplified example that should help illustrate how it works.
So, say you have $TONK, and $TONK has 5 available options strikes: $5, $10, $15, $20, and $25. All 5 strikes have the same Open Interest (number of those contracts existing) for this Friday, 10,000 each. Enough contracts for 1 million shares at each strike. And right now (Monday) $TONK is trading at $16, and no catalysts to move the price are expected. Calls are hedged for by buying shares, and puts are hedged by shortselling shares. For this example, assume the options writer only sells calls. The hedging on those calls will look something like this:
$5: 100%
$10: 75%
$15: 60%
$20: 40%
$25: 25%
So, why not 100% even on calls that are well ITM? Because the hedging on the OTM calls balances out the total to 100% of the ITM calls, as long as the price stays the same (hedging will be adjusted if the options writer is expecting the price to move). If $TONK trades sideways, by Thursday the hedging will look more like this:
$5: 100%
$10: 85%
$15: 75%
$20: 25%
$25: 15%
Which means the options writer hasn't actually had to buy any more shares. It's more likely that the $10 and $15 calls will still be ITM on Friday, but less likely that the $20 and $25 calls will go ITM, so the hedge stays balanced.
So what if the price does move unexpectedly? Well, if it moves down Friday morning, say to $13, the options writer will actually be over-hedged. They have enough shares to fulfill all the ITM calls, plus a full million shares extra that were hedged for the $15 and up strikes. They can now safely sell those extra shares, which is part of the reason a red week tends to be even more red on Friday - the hedges are being unwound to match the new $TONK price.
(Note: During market hours, hedging is done semi-automatically in real time. A price move on Monday will usually require less adjustment than on a Friday, because there is more time to buy shares without driving the price even highelower. Hedging isn't saved for Friday afternoon and then done all at once. When someone talks about calls ITM and T+2, it's probably being assumed that the person writing those calls had not been hedging properly, and is now on the hook for buying shares to cover all those ITM calls. Unhedged calls are called "Naked Calls," which are usually not as fun as they sound).
But what if the price rises substantially Friday morning? Unexpected good news on a patent application by TONK Corp... $TONK has quickly climbed to $22! Suddenly the hedge on those calls needs to look more like this:
$5: 100%
$10: 100%
$15: 100%
$20: 75%
$25: 25%
That means the options writer needs to have 4 million shares to cover the calls now ITM, but only has 3 million. They need to buy a million more shares on the open market, and they really want to do it TODAY, so they don't get another surprise price rise over the weekend.
Even being as careful as they can manage, buying those million shares raises the price even more. The climb reignites that morning's enthusiasm, and even more people buy in. $TONK is now $28, and all 50,000 calls are ITM. Now the options writer needs to buy ANOTHER million shares to cover the $25 strike calls. They have T+2 to do this, so either they buy them quickly on Friday and raise the price even higher, or they risk something else happening over the weekend and making those million shares even more expensive when they slowly buy them on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Either way, $TONK is probably headed well over $30.
Now imagine the options writer had also sold calls with a $30 strike, and a $35 strike. And $40. And also calls for all those strikes next week, and the week after, and oh shit 3 weeks from now is Quad Witching and the OI is 25,0000 on each strike. Also the options writer had only hedged for this week and the next, and now needs 2 million shares by Tuesday, and at least another 3 million by next Friday. And 6+ million for the week after that. And all this share buying keeps the price climbing, so by Quad Witching $TONK is trading at $42, and the options writer needs to buy 20 million shares somehow...

Context: My fiancé is from abroad so we are having a small wedding ceremony with immediate family only (8 total) as his family cannot be there.
This is followed by evening party (70). I have large family so many aunties uncles and cousins take up the invite list before I can invite friends. Some cousins and some of our friends I haven't been able to include yet - at least until I get RSVPs back to see what numbers I have to offer out more invites to people who know us. Friends are important because my finace won't have his family there and hasn't met a load of my extended family yet.
My cousin who I have only met a handful of times and my fiancé has never met her, messaged me via social media ahead of even receiving an invite (as a non-close cousin I didn't even know if I was going to invite her) to ask if her boyfriend of a few months can come as it would be a good opportunity for the whole family to meet him. I initially didn't reply as I had no idea how to politely respond no!
Then she chased me 2 days later saying I needed to let her know, she had to book hotel before prices went up and as her brother probably can't come she thought she'd use her brother's invite for her boyfriend. Ironically, no one has actually recieved an invite yet!!!!!
Im quite mad about it! I explained it was a really small celebration and I have many friends I hadn't been able to invite yet and so they would be getting a spot ahead of partners. Id let her know when I could. She then said - ok I'll tell my dad his girlfriend isn't invited if partners arent allowed. So is now meddling with my invites! My uncle's girlfriend IS invited; they are in a long term relationship, live together and I actually know her!
I explained her dad and girlfriend were invited and again, that I meant we cannot invite partners we had never met ahead of friends and I'd get back to her once I had a better idea of numbers. The conversation was left there.
What do you all think? - Asking for a plus 1 when you haven't even had an invite yet or know the bride and groom that well. - Assuming you can recycle an invite and give someone you know instead of the bride and groom choosing who it goes to - Having someone at a small wedding we've never met - Thinking meeting her boyfriend and the price of her booking a hotel is something I care about. I've met her max 3 times. - saying she'll tell someone they aren't invited after misinterpreting my point.
Tell me honestly - am I right or wrong to be irritated?

2023.03.22 07:58 Scary_Ad5100 Any low-cost or payment plan vets?

Looking for some vets in or around New west that are either good with payment plan, low-cost or won’t try and price gauge me. One of my cats isn’t doing that great today, she’s had something similar before, a couple years ago, and we rushed her to our nearest vet and $700 later the vet said she was fine and they didn’t find anything wrong with her. Right now my household is one income, so paying for another $500+ vet bill isn’t really in the cards for us. I would still like to bring her in the morning somewhere that will work with us and be understanding of our situation. She has been very lethargic all day and I’ve been hoping she would’ve kind passed this by the evening. Really hoping she perks up overnight, she’s not even 8 years old. 😔🥺 we have always done our best to provide for our 3 kitties, just feeling guilty I can’t do more for her right now…. We are proud people who try to work hard for everything we have and even a go fund me doesn’t seem right to do for this at the moment..

I 27f and my “boyfriend” 27m have been seeing each other since June last year. I have some issues from past relationships hence why I haven’t dated before him since I left my child’s abusive father. I have spent a long time working on me. About 4 years. He has also been single a while. The shortest way I know how to say this is he has said before he has commitment issues. But we spend every day after work together. He has never asked me to be his gf but we talk about buying a house together and a future together. He has asked about the adoption process with my son. Has joked more than once about us moving in. I have met some of his family. It seems my love language is words of affirmation..the one thing he says he can’t do because of past relationships. But he has a female best friend who he has no problem giving words of affirmation too on a regular basis. They pass notes everyday and say things that doesn’t necessarily seem like things you say to just a friend, things like “I am only at peace when I’m with you”. He won’t take her calls near me and he walks away to respond to text messages or closes out real quick if I’m near. She is married. Everyone at work thinks they are in a relationship to the point management has talked with him about it. And that when he first talked with me I asked him if they were. I think they are having an emotional affair. I’m not sure if he realizes it or just doesn’t care because she is his world. We have never been to a movie when he wasn’t texting her the whole time. He has to respond to her constantly and checks to make sure he doesn’t miss her messages. But half the time it’s pulling teeth for me to get a response message wise. He does call me on his lunch break everyday unless she isn’t at work. If she is not there I don’t hear from him at all until he’s off work. I told him when I brought it up in the beginning if he was in love with her it was ok. I just needed to know so I could protect me and not get attached. He only said I don’t think that’s the case. That was the end of discussion. He makes her coffee every morning. Sends her selfies on a regular. This week I was needing words of affirmation and he said he likes me enough that he sometimes uses other words to describe it. Maybe love? I have no clue. Because he doesn’t like to open up to me much. But he is always confiding in her. But everyone at work has told me I’m just a place holder until she isn’t married anymore or decides she wants him. I just feel like a fool and I’m hurt. I definitely have strong feelings for this man. AM I THE ASSHOLE for feeling frustrated in this situation? I want more than anything to trust him… but my gut is screaming at me and almost a year later I can’t continue to ignore it… I apologize for the length 😶

I haven't slept well in around a year. I rarely get 8 hours a day. I'm 14 years old and I haven't slept well in a while. Some days I don't sleep at all and have to go to school without sleep. This has severally mentally affected me. I take pre-workout which has around 250mg of caffeine but even when I don't take my usual pre-workout dosage I still can't fall asleep. I do weightlifting and exercise 3-6x times a week. I've tried nearly every sleep medicine but STILL CAN'T fall asleep. Usually when I try to fall asleep I get anxious. Its currently 1:54am and still haven't slept. Any advice?
