2023.03.21 21:20 tryingtogetbetter98 Anyone have experience with Residential Treatment for OCD?

So I just started ERP therapy for severe OCD. It seems that my level of OCD and other anxiety related disorders(health anxiety, panic disorder and agoraphobia) are so severe that my new therapist is recommending residential treatment. She’s recommended that I start the process of admission at a few OCD/Anxiety Residential Treatment Centers.
Does anyone have any insights to treatment at these facilities?
What are they like?
Insurance dealings?
Helpful in treating severe OCD/Anxiety?

2023.03.21 21:14 demeter888 My(20f) ndad finally kicked me out on the street

I am a 20f college student who moved with my dad, who didn't raise me, about a year and a half ago. About a year or two ago my mom's drug addiction had worsened and due to health issues and her mental health/addiction she couldn't pay our bills. I drained my 10k savings and tried to contribute by getting my friend to move in who also had gotten kicked out of her boyfriend's to pay rent, which was incredibly kind. Well, shit hit the fan and we were evicted a month before our lease was done. I moved with my dad and so did my 17f sister who he has visitation rights to but no custody. We were put in his casita in the back, with no access to a bathroom and a kitchen which was fine for the most part, but he would often lock us out of the main house. Last march my mom got treatment and by august she moved back in with my grandma who also is very mentally ill with BPD and past addiction issues. My dad was not good to my mom, and has severely manipulated and gaslighted me on the severity of it, and was abusive to her, which made it hard all my life to get close to him. But I tried, I never yelled in amidst an argument and I always took fault even when it wasn't mine. He didn't want me to work, so he gave me $400 a month and I did the grocery shopping and chores. Things were fine up until I started the fall semester and his control over me has gotten so much worse. Coming home at 1am was suddenly a problem, me drinking at friends house (I live in the USA, and am not 21), spending time anywhere but his house. I felt like every aspect of my life was put under a microscope and I was suddenly no longer myself. My dad has been kind to me when I act right, but as soon as the room I use as storage in his house wasn't cleaned I'm kicked out and so is my sister, with no money, my tuition taken away, my phone shut off, me taken out of the will, my healthcare taken away, me being his daughter is now no longer. I still feel like this is all my fault, he keeps bringing up how I didn't get him anything for Christmas as I had covid and had spent a lot of money on his birthday, which was a week prior. He said I made him feel worthless, even though he knew I was sick and had still framed a picture of him and I. I am so tired. I am tired of being told I am a worthless failure for making mistakes, and I still apologized and told him I love him regardless of his decision and he told me he doesn't love me. I don't blame him and as an adult I understand he has no obligation towards me. He knows my mom isn't in a great position and that I will probably have to drop out and defer to work and provide for myself. He doesn't care. He has threatened to kick me out 7 times, and that is fine. I knew this was coming, and I am just tired and want peace as I've moved so many times in the past years. I honestly dont care about his alcoholism or if he just drinks himself into a hole. This has been the worst time of my life, and I am happy to just be able to have freedom from his control and not have to worry about being perfect all the time.

2023.03.21 20:39 KennyFknPowers_ Potential newcomer questions

Hello!
I've been considering coming to NA for a long time but I've always had some hangups with it. I finally recently decided to visit an outpatient treatment facility that my insurance covers (I'm taking a week off work and doing the intensive all-day shit starting Monday), and low and behold they do the 12 steps. Of course. So I guess there's no avoiding it. I suppose at least NA can accommodate my work schedule so that's at least feasible long term.
I'm just curious: 1) How exactly do you "work" the steps? 2) Anyone not work the steps and still benefit? 3) I know that "higher power" can mean anything, but even then I still struggle with it. I'm not a spiritual or religious person in any way and I've thought long and hard what my higher power could/would be, and idk I just don't feel like anything I pick could mean as much to me as god means to other people. If that makes sense. 4) NA vs AA? This treatment center is more involved with AA. But I'm an opiate addict (well on my way to being an alcoholic though lol) and I guess I wanna be with my people. 5) If I'm sober from my DOC for 15 months but I keep using other drugs that I want to quit, when is my clean date?? Subjective I know, but curious of opinions. 6) I don't like some of the steps, for example "make a list of people you've harmed" and make amends or whatever. That seems overwhelming and difficult. And a lot of steps seem super Jesusy (and again I know higher power can mean anything, but still, at the end of the day they mean the Christian god). I also don't like the whole "powerless" idea rather than accountability for my own actions. 7) Anything I can read/study to prepare myself? Or words of encouragement? Please.
Idk I just wanted to type my thoughts out loud. You all seem like a lovely bunch. I appreciate any support!

2023.03.21 20:34 jammyishere Help understanding numbers [36M]

Disclaimer: I'm fully aware my numbers aren't that bad. My doctor told me as much this year. However, last year he made it a point to tell me to eat healthier and exercise more.
Last year I had some blood work done and to my surprised my LDL was elevated. I was alarmed because I'm a pretty healthy person. I don't drink very often. I don't do any drugs. I eat pretty well. I take long walks a couple times a week. I am not like, a star athlete or anything, but I'm definitely healthy.
My numbers from last year: 155-160lbs 5'8"
CHOLESTEROL, TOTAL 195
HDL CHOLESTEROL 56
TRIGLYCERIDES 84
LDL-CHOLESTEROL 121
CHOL/HDLC RATIO 3.5
NON HDL CHOLESTEROL 139
My numbers from this year: 145lbs 5'8"
CHOLESTEROL, TOTAL 154
HDL CHOLESTEROL 48
TRIGLYCERIDES 62
LDL-CHOLESTEROL 92
CHOL/HDLC RATIO 3.2
NON HDL CHOLESTEROL 106

After I got my numbers last year my doctor gave a gentle recommendation to eat healthier and exercise more... I was already eating healthy and exercising though so I went even harder than I have been. I went hard on a healthy diet. I reduced my saturated fat intake. I upped my vegetables and fruits. Natural sources of soluble fiber are my friend. I eat oats with blueberries and chia seeds 5/7 days a week. I eat a big serving of leafy greens every single day. I opt for 2-3 veggies sides for dinner (roasted or sautéed in olive oil). I eat fish once a week. I eat red meat maybe a couple of times a month. I stick to beans and chicken for the most part as my protein. Occasionally pork cause I live in NC and how am I gonna pass up barbecue. Outside of my diet I walked every single day. One hour of walking almost every single day. Not during the winter though because F the cold, but if it is warm and not raining, I'm out walking.
Overall I'd say things look really good. My numbers have definitely improved. What I don't understand is WHY DID MY HDL GO DOWN? I basically don't use any more butter or vegetable oil. I cut out all the "bad fats" people warned me about. I thought for sure my HDL would be on the up. What else can I do to get that number to increase.
I should note, everyone in my family has high cholesterol. So even though I know my numbers weren't SUPER bad last year or anything, my movement in an undesirable direction was a concern for me. My mother is on a statin, my aunt is on a statin, my brothers (who have way worse numbers than I) will likely be put on a statin. My cousin who is far more healthy and active than me is also in the same boat as me. Similar numbers. Feels like maybe just some bad genes.

2023.03.21 19:55 CynicalGeezer An open letter to NPR regarding data brokers.

Dear NPR;
I am writing on behalf of my parents, NPR subscribers, regarding a recent update to your Smart TV app.
It seems that video streaming to your app quits unexpectedly after roughly 10 seconds, causing some frustration. We had hoped it was a temporary issue, but more reports of similar behavior popped up online. Some of us users got together for a little chat.
We believe the issue is a DNS filter I, and many nerds, run at home to enhance our online protection. I block local devices from accessing nefarious servers such as doubleclick.com, an advertising platform, in an effort to protect my parents and family. I am aware I could simply whitelist this server, which may resolve the issues completely, but I feel a little background may be relevant.
Recently, someone in my family developed health issues of a serious nature. Not only did their search queries trigger all sorts of predatory ads, leading them down a depressing rabbit-hole of anxiety and fear, but entirely separate family households were bombarded with an unusually fierce targeted campaign of drug promotions including unskippable "When my ___ was diagnosed with ___" video ads on nearly all YouTube content.
This crossed a line. This campaign desired us to feel terrible in order to sell hope; it was relentless.
Doubleclick.com was smack-dab the center of this harassment and, as a family, we chose to take our online footprints seriously. I built and distributed Pi-Holes, recommended browser plugins, set up VPN networks, and educated family on tracking.
I understand advertisement-supported content is an established business model, but an advertisement is not congruent with data brokerage; rather a facet of this unregulated odious industry. Neither NPR, nor our family, understand the full scope of data collected or how that information will be used next month or year.
We consider NPR an authority in news, programming, and education. We proudly choose this subscription to support your efforts. In this day and age, social awareness where seemingly innocent data (such as government access to period tracker apps) are potentially used against individuals is of great concern. NPR leads the front on privacy issue like the one above (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22period+tracker%22+app+site%253Anpr.org) with great, timely reporting, but tosses their subscribers to the wolves behind the scenes by allowing third parties to harvest their user base. It's important to reflect on one's complicity when working with 3rd parties; their ethical standards affect your own standing.
On behalf of my parents, my family, and frustrated paying subscribers, please reconsider your partnerships with 3rd party data brokers and, if unavoidable, I ask NPR to consider self-hosting advertising, reporting anonymous metrics, in order to protect their subscriber base.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

From Mirror to Window: Curing Psychoanalysis of its Narcissism
The apparently individual conflict of the patient is revealed as a universal conflict of his environment and epoch. Neurosis is thus nothing less than an individual attempt, however unsuccessful, to solve a universal problem. - C.G. Jung (1912)
Narcissism is now the rage, the universal diagnosis. In Freud's world, the new attention was on conversion hysteria; in Bleuler's, on dementia praecox. Earlier we find all ills attributed to the English malady, to the spleen, to hypochondriasis, to melancholia, to chlorosis; in Paris, a myriad of phobies and délires. Different time and places, different syndromes.
Narcissism has its theoreticians - Kohut, Kernberg, Lacan - and modern Jungians are following the rage. The collective consciousness of psychology makes us collectively unconscious, much as Jung said when writing about the collective ideas in his day. Being "with it" also means being in it. The epidemic diagnosis Narcissism states that the condition is already endemic to the psychology that makes the diagnosis. It sees narcissism because it sees narcissistically. So let us not take this diagnosis so literally, but place it within the historical parade of Western diagnoses.
Eminent cultural critics - Karl Krauss, Thomas Szasz, Philip Rieff, Christopher Lasch, Paul Zweig, and the notorious Dr. Jeffrey Masson - have each seen that psychoanalysis breeds a narcissistic subjectivism inflicting on the culture an iatrogenic disorder, that is, a disease brought by the methods of the doctors who would cure it.
I shall continue their line of thought, but I shall use a method that Wolfgang Giegerich has so brilliantly exposed in many of his papers. If depth psychology itself suffers from a narcissistic disorder, then what we analysts need first to probe is the unconscious narcissism in analysis itself. Our first patient is neither the patient nor ourselves, but the phenomenon called "analysis" that has brought us both to the consulting room.
The term "Narcissism" is probably British . Havelock Ellis is credited with its invention, though Freud gave us its psychoanalytic meaning. What did Freud say? As I go through some of his descriptions, let us hear them narcissistically, as self-referents, descriptive of psychology and of ourselves in psychology.
1917: "We employ the term narcissism in relation to little children and it is to excessive narcissism of primitive man that we ascribe his belief in the omnipotence of his thoughts and consequent attempts to influence the course of events in the other world by magical practices." Does not analysis have this primitive omnipotence fantasy of influencing events in the outer world by its magical practices? The omnipotence of subjective reflection is attested to by many classic Jungians like Harding, Bernard, Meier, von Franz, Baumann, etc. As Jung himself says, we are each "the makeweight that tips the scales" that determine the outcome of world history." The rituals of self-engagement remove projections from the world so that, supposedly, the world itself is transformed by psychoanalysis.
1922: "... narcissistic disorders are characterized by a withdrawal of the libido from objects." The withdrawal of the libido from from objects - I ask you to remember this statement. We shall come back to it.
1925: Freud describes three historic blows to humankind's narcissism. These, he says, are the cosmological blow of Copernicus, the blow of Darwinian evolutionary theory, and the psychoanalytic blow (of Freud) which wounded the omnipotence fantasy, or narcissism, of the ego as sole self-willed ruler. Here, psychoanalysis becomes itself a giant omnipotence fantasy, a creation myth of our culture equivalent with astronomy and biology, promulgating itself with narcissistic grandeur.
This pronouncement appears in Freud's discussion on resistance to psychoanalysis. By means of this idea resistance, analysis brilliantly maintains its invulnerability to criticism. Questioning the validity of analysis is impugned as resistance to it. Even more: the very attacks demonstrate resistance and therefore help to validate analytical theory. As Freud says, "The triumph of narcissism, the ego's victorious assertion of its own invulnerability. It refuses to be hurt by the arrows of reality ... It insists that it is impervious to wounds dealt by the outside world."
Later Freud considered narcissism not to be rooted in love at all, i.e., as self-love, but to be rather a defense against aggressive impulses. Let us consider for a moment the value of "aggressive impulses," at least and at best they take the object, the world out there, into account: I feel enraged about societal injustice, nuclear danger, media crap, industrial callousness, the corporate mind, political ideologues, hideous architecture, etc. But, owing to my narcissistic defenses against the involving call of aggression, I go to the spa, work out, meditate, jog, diet, reduce stress, relax my body armor, improve my orgasms, get a new hairstyle, and take a vacation. And see my therapist: very expensive, very good for me, because he or she devotes complete attention to my problems, especially our transferential frame. Instead of the world and my outrage, I work on my analysis, myself, the Self. This Self, too, fits a narcissistic definition: "the incorporation of grandiose object images as defense against anxiety and guilt" or, as Fenichel puts it, one feels oneself in "reunion with an omnipotent force, be that force an archetype, a god or goddess, the unus mundus, or the numinosity of analysis itself.
Freud's paper "On Narcissism" states that both introspection and conscience or "being watched" derive from and serve narcissism. Yet, psychotherapy practices self-scrutiny as the principal method in its treatment and "being watched" or supervision as the principal component of its training. A candidate goes to hour after hour of institutionalized narcissism of watching and being watched.
The institutionalization of narcissism in our profession - the idea of resistance, the idealization of the Self, the practices of introspection and supervision, the omnipotence fantasies about its own importance in world history, its technique of referring all events back to itself as the vessel, the mirror, the temenos, the frame - bears immediately upon that central obsession of analysis today, transference.
*
By transference, here, I mean that self-gratifying analytical habit which refers the emotions of life to the analysis. Transference habitually deflects object libido, that is, love for anything outside analysis, into a narcissistic reflection upon analysis. We feed analysis with life. The mirror that walks down the road of life (Flaubert) replaces the actual road, and the mirror no longer reflects the world, only the walking companions. They may as well have stayed indoors, less distracted by the trees and the traffic.
The principal content of analytical reflection as transference is the child we once were, a fact which accords with Freud's observation that the object choice of the narcissist is "someone he once was.” This helps account for the faddish popularity of Alice Miller’s writings. Her idealized children exhibit what Freud said: the narcissist is “not willing to forego his narcissistic perfection in his childhood” and “seeks to recover the early perfection.” The focus on childhood traps the libido only further into subjectivity, and therefore we must recognize that erotic compulsions in analysis are produced primarily by the analysis, rather than by the persons. Analysis acts itself out through them quite impersonally so that they often feel betrayed and ashamed by the impersonality of the emotions they undergo and are unable to recognize that what they are suffering is the object libido trying to find a way out of analysis. Instead, the narcissistic viciousness of our theory says that transference emotions are compelling the persons to go deeper into analysis.
Let us recognize that the other person - patient or analyst - embodies the only possibility within an analysis to whom object libido can flow. The person in the other chair represents cure of analytical narcissism simply by being there as an Other. Moreover, the patient for the analyst and the analyst for the patient become such numinous objects because they have also been tabooed as libidinal possibilities. Analyst and patient may not act their desire for each other. The narcissism of the situation makes them absolutely necessary to each other, while the taboo sets them absolutely outside of each other. This outside object however, is also inside the analysis. So, patient for doctor and doctor for patient become the symbolic mode of ending analysis by means of love.
Of course, the persons are often torn by what Freud calls the love dilemma of the narcissistic patient: “the cure by love,” which he generally refers to as cure by analysis. We must ask whether this neurotic choice, as Freud calls it, arises from the narcissisms of the patient or from the narcissism of the analytical system in which the patient is situated. After all, the fantasy of an opposition between love and analysis occurs within the prior fantasy of cure which has brought the persons together in the first place.
By elaborating ethical codes, malpractice insurance, investigations, and expulsions that blame the participants, analysis protects itself from wounding insights about its own narcissism. The vulnerability of analysis - that its effectiveness is always in question, that it is neither science nor medicine, that it is aging into professional mediocrity and may have lost its soul to power years ago despite its idealized language by growth and creativity (a language by the way, never used by its founders) - this vulnerability is overcome by idealizing the transference.
As well as transference love, there is also hatred. Perhaps the client’s hatred of the analyst and the hatred of the analyst for the client are also not personal. Perhaps, these intense oppressive feelings against each other arise in both to present both with the fact that they are in a hateful situation: the object libido hates the attachment of transference. Analysis hates itself in order to break the narcissistic vessel imprisoning the libido that would go out into the soul in the world.
The horned dilemmas of transference, including the analyst’s stare into the mirror of his own counter-transference, the feelings of love and hatred, this agony and ecstasy and romantic torture convince the participants that what is going on is of intense importance: first, because these phenomena are expected by the theory and provide proof of it, and second, because these phenomena re-enact what analysis once was in its own childhood in Vienna and Zurich, analysis in primary fusion with its origins in Breuer and Freud and Jung, in Dora and Anna and Sabina. The feelings are cast in therapeutic guise because this is the healing fiction of the analytic situation. In other words, transference is less necessary to the doctor and the patient than it is to analysis by means of which it intensifies its narcissistic idealization, staying in love with itself. We therapists do not sit in our chambers so many hours a day only for the money, or the power, but because we are addicted to analytical narcissism. Our individual narcissism is both obscured and reinforced by the approved narcissism of the analytical profession.
When one partner imagines a tryst or the other imagines resisting a seduction, or when either imagines that love is a solution to misery, then they are framed in the romantic conflicts of Madame Bovary, Wuthering Heights, and Anna Karenina, reconstituting the Romanticisms of the nineteenth century and the origins of psychoanalysis, not in your or my personal childhoods, but in its own cultural childhood. This means we have to locate the narcissism of contemporary analysis within a much wider narcissism: the Romantic movement.
*
Literary tradition differentiates at least four principal traits of this genre. We have already spoken of one, “idealization of the love object.” And indeed analysis idealizes the patient as an “interesting case,” “difficult patient,” “good patient,” “borderline personality.” Or consider all the literary fabulations that have made patients into eternal literary figures - Dora, Ellen West, Babette, Miss Miller, Wolfman, Ratman, Little Hands, all the way to Freud and Jung themselves in the novels The White Hotel and The House of Glass. Think of the Romanticism of our theoretical constructs: Love and Death, Empathy, Transformation, Growth, The Child, The Great Mother, The Mirror, Desire and Jouissance, and the Transitional Object. In the patient there takes place such idealized events as a hieros gamos, a quest for self-discovery and a journey into wholeness. Synchronicities outside of causal laws, transcendent functions, integration of the shadow and the realization of the Self on whom the future of civilization depends. We record our idealization of the love object, i.e., analysis, in taped and filmed analytic sessions, paying meticulous and expensive attention to trivial conversations and gestures. Analysis is in love with its idealized image.
A second essential trait of Romanticism is said to be the opposition between bourgeois society and the inner self that, with its dreams, desires and inspirations, tends to oppose, even contradict, the outer world of usual things. Psychoanalysis from its beginnings imagines itself fundamentally opposed to the civilization and its institutions of religion, family, medicine, and the political community disdained as “the collective.” Freud’s emphasis on himself as Jew and hence marginal, as well as Jung’s favorite position as heretical old hermit (despite the bourgeois lives they led and values they held) still shapes the imagination of the profession and distorts its relation to the ordinary world.
Third, imprisonment another basic theme in Romanticism, especially French and Russian. In Dostoevsky’s The Possessed, Maria’s song says: “This tiny cell suffices me, there I will dwell my soul to save.” The consulting room provides the confining physical place for the psychic imprisonment of analysis as such its devotion to the secret nooks and crannies of the private world, decorating with reconstructive rococo (i.e., psycho-dynamic intricacies) the narcissistic cell of personality.
Fourth, the Romantic genre has been defined as one that simultaneously seeks and postpones a particular end. This fits therapy. Its entire procedure seeks to restore the person to the world, yet postpones this return indefinitely. (Meanwhile, do not make major changes in your actual life. Don’t act out. The cure of analysis becomes more analysis-another analyst, another school - and the improvement of training becomes ever more hours.) The simultaneity of seeking and postponing an end occurs in the basic conundrum of every analysis, its contradictory two commandments: encourage the desires of the unconscious (Thou Shall Not Repress) and forbid gratification (Thou Shall Not Act Out). Our work is with the libidinous and our method is by way of abstention. The end is unforeseeable; there is no completion. Analysis interminable, as Freud said. This is the Romanticism of eternal longing.
There is no way out of Romanticism’s consulting room and the subjectivism of its eros, unless we turn to what is beyond its purview, turn to what narcissism and romanticism leave out: the objects, the unidealized, immediately given, actual world of dull and urban things . By turning psychological attention from the mirror of self-reflection to the world through the window, we release “object libido” to seek its goal beyond narcissistic confinement in analysis. For “object libido” is but a psychoanalytic name for the drive which loves the world, the erotic desire for Anima Mundi, for Soul in the World.
Perhaps it becomes clearer why I have been emphasizing John Keats’s remarkable phrase; “Call the world … The vale of Soul-making. Then you will find out the use of the world.” Also, you will understand why I have held myself back from that side of Jung which expounds upon meaning, Self, individuation, unus mundus, wholeness, mandalas, etc. . These large and introverted ideas envelop me and usually my patients with a grandiose, invulnerable aura. As well, I keep a distance from the current Kohut craze and Lacanian mystique. Although recognizing narcissism as the syndrome of the times (even if the groundwork for this was prepared long ago in the metaphysical catastrophe of Augustinian and Cartesian subjectivism); yet, Kohut attempts its cure by the same means of narcissistic obsession: an ever more detailed observation of subjectivity. And a subjectivity within the oppressive confines of a negatively reconstructed childhood. The child archetype dominates contemporary therapy, keeping patients (and analysts) safe from the world. For this archetype feels always endangered by the actual world, lives not in the present but in futurity, and is addicted to its own powerless infantilism. By so focusing on the child, analysis disenfranchises itself from wider realm of soul-making in the adult community of polis.
Nevertheless I must confess to a serious long-standing error on my part regarding Keats’s phrase. I always considered the world out there to be useful for making one’s own soul. Narcissism again. My soul, your soul - not its soul. For the Romantics, however, ensouling the world was a crucial part of their program. They recognized the traps of narcissistic subjectivity in their vision. Hence, they sought the spirit in physical nature, the brotherhood of all mankind or Gemeinschaftsgefühl, political revolution, and a return to the classic gods and goddesses, attempting to revivify the soul of the world with pantheism.
We must therefore read Keats as saying we go through the world for the sake of its soul-making, thereby our own. This reading suggests a true object libido, beyond narcissism, in keeping with Otto Fenichel’s definition of love. Love can only be called such when “one’s own satisfaction is impossible without satisfying the object too. If the world is not satisfied by our going through it, no matter how much beauty and pleasure our souls may receive from it, then we live in its vale without love.
There is a way out, or I wouldn’t be standing here. For my specific style of narcissism, my pose before the mirror, today is heroic. My style insists on resolution of the issues raised. The method I shall be using here follows the method which I usually empty for resolving issues. First, we look back into the history of psychoanalysis for a model; second, we turn to some peculiar bit of pathologizing for a clue; and third, we resolve problems by dissolving them into images and metaphors.
So, let us turn back to the first psychoanalytic case, Anna O., and her doctor, Josef Breuer, who, with Freud, wrote Studies in Hysteria. As you recall, after a year of almost daily sessions often of several hours, he suddenly terminated. You recall also the intensity of her transference, that she developed a hysterical pregnancy and childbirth, after Breuer tried to end the treatment. He, according to Jones, after a final visit to her “fled the house in a cold sweat. The next day he and his wife left for Venice to spend a second honeymoon which resulted in the conception of a daughter.” Whether fact or not, and Ellenberger says not, the fantasy shows a founding patron of our work escaping both cure by analysis and cure by love for the beauty of Venice and the conception of a daughter. His object libido returns from the oppressive narcissism of psychoanalysis to the Romanticism of the wider world.
This wide world remains merely that, merely a place of escape or acting out, so long as the world “out the window” is imagined only in the Cartesian model as sheer res extensa, only dead matter. To show more vividly how that world is, as Keats said, a place of soul, let us go straight through the window into the world. Let us take a walk in a Japanese garden, in particular the strolling garden, the one with water, hills, trees, and stones. While we walk, let us imagine the garden as an emblem for the peripatetic teacher or the therapeutic guide (psychopompos), the world itself as psychoanalyst showing us soul, showing us how to be in it soulfully.
I turn to the garden and to Japan because of insights given while in Kyoto gardens several years ago, and also because the garden as metaphor expresses some of the deepest longings - from Hesperides, to Eden’s paradise, and Maria’s hortus inclusus - for the world as home of the soul. So by entering into the Japanese garden now we shall be stepping through the window into the anima mundi.
First we notice that the garden has no central place to stand and view it all. We can but scrutinize a part at a time. Instead of overview and wholeness, there is perspective and eachness. The world changes as we move. Here a clump of iris, there a mossy rock. Instead of a center (with its etymological roots in the Greek kentron, “goad” or “prick,” and being compelled toward a goal by means of abstract geometric distancing), there are shifts of focus relative to the body’s location and attitude.
Second: as one strolls, each vista is seen again from a different perspective. The maple branching down to the pond edge, the floating leaves appear less melancholic after the path bends. These shifts of seeing again are precisely what the word “respect” means. To look again is to “respect.” Each time we look at the same thing again, we gain respect for it and add respect to it, curiously discovering the innate relation of “looks” - of regarding and being regarded, words in English that refer to dignity.
Third: when the garden, rather than the dream or the symptom or the unconscious, becomes the via regia of psyche, then we are forced to think anew about the word “in.” “In” is the dominant preposition of all psychoanalysis - not with, not from, not for, but “in.” We look in our souls, we look in a mirror. "In” has been utterly literally, as an invisible, spacelesss psychic stuff inside our skins, or meanings inside our dreams and symptoms, or the memories locked in the past. Interiority of the garden, however, is wholly present and wholly displayed. “In” holds the meanings of included, engaged, involved, embraced. Or, as Jung said, the psyche is not in us; we are in the psyche. This feeling of being in the psyche becomes most palpable when inside the ruins of a Greek temple, in an Egyptian tomb of a king, in a dance or a ritual, and in a Japanese garden. Jung’s phrase “esse in anima” takes on concreteness then, as it does in a clear-cut forest, a bombed city, a cancer ward, a cemetery. Ecology, architecture, interior design are other modes of feeling the anima mundi. Instead of the usual notion of psyche in body, the body strolling through the garden is in the psyche. The world itself is a psychic body; and our bodies as we move, stand, look, pause, turn, and sit are performing an activity of psychic reflection, an activity we formerly considered only mentally possible in the mirror of introspection.
Fourth: the idea of individuality also changes, for in the Japanese garden trees are trimmed at the top and encouraged to grow sideways. Rather than an individuality of the lone tree, towering (and Jung said the single tree is a major symbol of the individuating Self), these trees stretch their branches toward others. Individuality is within community and, takes its definition from community. Furthermore, each tuft in the soft branches of the pine trees is plucked by gardeners. They pull out needles, allowing emptiness to individualize the shape of each twig. It is as if nothing can be individualized unless it is surrounded by emptiness and yet also very, very close to what it is most like. Individuality is therefore more visible within the estrange separateness and close similarity, for instance, of family than in trying to be “different” from family.
Fifth: not only are aged trees supported with crutches and encouraged to flower - blossoming belonging therefore not only to youth - but also the garden includes dead trees. What more wounds our narcissism than these images of old age, these crutched, dependent, twisted and dead trees? < “At least Aurora didn’t reject Tithonus, old, didn’t allow him to lie there lonely in the House of Dawn. She often fondled him, descending into her waters, before she bathed her yoked horses with care. She, when she rested in his arms, by neighbouring India, lamented that day returned too soon.”>
Sixth: the Karesanui gardens, or Zen-inspired gardens, present mainly white sand and found stones, rarely trees. In this bare place the mind watches itself making interpretations. The nine rocks in the raked sand are a tiger family swimming through the sea; the nine rocks are mountain tops peaking through white mist and clouds; the nine rocks are simply rocks, aesthetically placed with genius. One legend after another, one philosophy, theory or literary criticism, or psychological interpretation rises to the mind and falls back into the white sand. The garden becomes wholly metaphor, both what it is and what it is not, presence and absence at once. The concrete koan of the rock garden transforms the mind itself into metaphor, its thought transient while image endures, so that the mind cannot identify with its own subjectivism - narcissism overcome.
“This Open happens in the midst of beings. It exhibits an essential feature which we have already mentioned. To the Open there belong a world and the earth. But the world is not simply the Open that corresponds to clearing, and the earth is not simply the Closed that corresponds to concealment. Rather, the world is the clearing of the paths of the essential guiding directions with which all decision complies. Every decision, however, bases itself on something not mastered, something concealed, confusing; else it would never be a decision. The earth is not simply the Closed but rather that which rises up as self-closing. World and earth are always intrinsically and essentially in conflict, belligerent by nature. Only as such do they enter into the conflict of clearing and concealing.” - Heidegger, The Origin of the Work of Art.
‘“Hegel introduces this notion of ‘oppositional determination” in his logic of essence, when he discusses the relationship between identity and difference; his point there is not only that identity is always the identity of identity and difference, but that difference itself is also always the difference between itself and identity; in the same way, it is not only necessity that encompasses both itself and contingency, but also - and more fundamentally - it is contingency itself which encompasses both itself and necessity. Or, with regard to the tension between essence and appearance, the fact that essence has to appear within the domain of appearances, as a hint that “appearances are not all” but are “merely appearances.”’ - Zizek, Less than Nothing>
*
Finally, I shall insist that the garden is not natural; nor is psyche natural. The garden was designed and is tended to maintain an artificiality that imitates nature . In Fort Worth, Texas, a large and marvelous Japanese garden was constructed years ago. But since adequate funds were not set aside for gardeners from Japan, nature slowly destroys that garden. Without the pruners’ perverted twist to each inch of nature, the garden declines into merely another part of the forest. A garden’s elaborate display of soul-in-the-world is an opus contra naturam, like alchemy. Like alchemy, the garden is a work of intense culture. Unlike alchemy, its matter, its body, is out there, rather than inside the glass vessel.
Because the garden is artificial, as the alchemist was called artifex, all conceptions of soul must be plucked of naturalistic fallacies. The soul as opus contra naturam will not be served adequately by fallacious comparisons with organic growth, cyclical process, and myths of nature goddesses. Nor does the garden shelter the child from which grows the creative person as psychotherapy is found to believe. By insisting upon the artificiality of our work with soul, I am trying to keep us from the Romantic error of confusing the ideal (Eden and the Elysian fields; Horaiko, in Japanese) with the natural. The garden as metaphor offers a romantic vision that saves us from Naturalistic Romanticism by twisting and sophisticating nature through art.
This twist to nature that wounds idealizations of garden is presented in our culture, as in Roman culture, by our ancient god of gardens and gardeners, Priapus. Priapus is neither young nor beautiful. Unlike lovely Narcissus, unlike the semi-divine figures of Adam and Eve, Priapus is mature, bald and paunchy, and so distorted that his mother, Venus, deserted him at birth. His very presence repels romantic idealizations and the gaze into the mirror of Venusian vanity as well as Narcissus’s rapt reflection. Priapic reflection starts the other way around; his preposterous swollen condition reflects the vitality of the world. The same force displays in him as in the buds and germinating pods. By means of distortion which deceptively seems “only natural,” Priapus invites the grotesque pathologized disproportions of imagination - and imagination, says Bachelard, works by deformation.
So, when I invoke Priapus, I am not speaking of priapismus; I am not speaking of machismo; and I am not anti-feminine. Let me be quite clear. I am speaking of the generative artificiality that is the essence of the garden and of the psyche. Each dream, each fantasy, and each symptomatic complication of natural health and normative humanity bears witness to the psyche’s libidinal pleasure in exaggeration, its fertile genius for imaginative distortion. If this god of gardens is also a god of psychoanalysis - and from Charcot through Lacan the priapic has been invoked - he brings to its work an archaic reflex beyond the romantic or baroque, a rousing urgency forward and outward. (Priapus was not permitted indoors in Hestia’s closed rooms where his presence becomes only violent and obscene.)
Moreover, this god needs no mirror to know himself, for his self is wholly displayed. His nature cannot be concealed within, so he is quite free of hidden meanings and subtle innuendos that keep psychoanalysis hopefully addicted to one more revelation, one more transformation, interminable. Priapus knows no metamorphosis, no transfigurations. Priapus is without ambiguity; metaphor is forbidden to him; he displays all, reveals nothing. Like the garden, all there. The rocks are the rocks.
<"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." - Matthew 16:18>

2023.03.21 19:27 freerice88 MD Anderson vs local hospital for EUS/ERCP

Posting on behalf of my good friend. There is a mass on her pancreas head that needs a biopsy to definitively diagnose whether or not it is cancer, but so far the imaging and bloodwork (CA-19) do not bode well. Her local GI doctor arranged a doctor who has done EUS before to do an EUS/ERCP next monday. We are wondering whether or not it would be better just to simply take her to MD Anderson to do this procedure, as this is critical to diagnose and to determine a treatment plan. We are also unsure on if MD Anderson will repeat the same procedure if she goes there seeking a second opinion for diagnosis. I've also read somewhere on this subreddit that there have been cases where the doctor missampled the tissue giving a false negative, thus requiring another EUS.
Another question we have is regarding the best hospital for care - we received from pancan.org a recommendation for the START center for cancer care in San Antonio. Does anyone have any anecdotes or thoughts on this? That is closer to our home in Austin, is it even worth thinking about this as a treatment option?

2023.03.21 19:18 crazyburneraccount America Rant: It's not just the "politicians" or "sensitive kids"

Contrary to popular belief, the so-called "United" States of America is not the freest country in the world. Not even moderately free!!! But here's the thing though, it's not just politicians that try to give this country a bad name.

America is only a free society compared to those run by actual dictators in authoritarian countries like Russia, China, Venezuela, etc. Even compared with collectivist homogenous societies like Italy and Saudi Arabia, America is a joke full of misinformation in the mainstream media and scare tactics used by supposedly God-fearing parents to hurt their children. Henry Ford is still taught in schools as a legend, when he was literally the only American to have been praised by the contemporary German Chancellor before World War II.

At or before the age of 12, I began to realize that this "free" shit-tier country was full of capitalistic corruption with a shitty school system and assholes for teachers too concerned attempting to get too involved in their students' personal lives. I was semi-ignorant of politics and racial issues at the time, even. All this "zero tolerance" BS for bullying and drugs.

Other countries, including Canada and Mexico, are laughing at us. American parents (mostly Christian and/or Republican) expect their kids to follow all aspects of whatever their own vision of "mainstream society" tells them to do, unless a part of that vision goes against their agenda. Opinions are considered or implied as "facts", and facts as "opinions".

America's overton window has shifted so far right over the last four decades that its "solid-left" (Biden, Harris, Newsom, Pelosi, etc.) is unofficially the equivalent to Germany and the UK's center-right. Funny thing is **I say this as someone who voted for Trump over Biden**, yet no one believes me when I spread the truth about the so-called "left-wing" in America. It's why I laugh (at least in my head) at my family members when they proclaim to be "centrists" or "independents."

Parents and teachers openly pick favorites, as it's considered "normal" in America. All this fake patriotism talk. The politicalization of religion and sports. America is a globalist country wearing a nationalist suit, that Henry Ford's racist and antisemitic "ideas" inspired countries from all over the world such as Germany and South Africa; and George W. Bush (the man behind ... well, y'know) literally pressured pastors and The Salvation Army to convert people in African countries (such as Rwanda) to Christianity.

Many kids become "sensitive" or "spoiled" or "bratty" (the correct term is "scarred") for the rest of their lives because their parents instill fear in them at a very young age (usually 5-11). This is considered "normal" behavior from the "parents" in North American (particularly US and Mexican) cultures.

Some countries in Europe, especially Sweden and Finland, are much happier places to live in than the US. Universal healthcare at no cost, universal college at a semi-no cost (even the government makes the students pay very little in taxes).

When my fellow Americans rant about inflation, gas/egg prices, etc., it doesn't affect what I do in my daily life. These f*ckers are broke as hell. Who cares about price. Especially when billionaires are starving some of us to death. Unless you're on some SSI or EBT shit, the government won't take any student seriously. Here's the funny part, you can't earn more than a certain amount per month and definitely not on a debit card. The government is the most ableist and classist sector of this entire country.

Age is treated like a numbers/market value/hierachal type'a game even outside of hot topics like consent.

Parents tell their kids not to be racist, while also spouting lowkey ethnonationalistic and blatantly homophobic, transphobic, and fatphobic BS. Total f*cking hypocrites.

I'm done ranting about America and the conservatives. Also to the hardline progressive side: Family Guy, South Park, and stand-up black comedy are not real-life 🤡

2023.03.21 19:10 Watercress_Ready Neo-luddite misunderstandings

I started this project after seeing posts on the late Kaczynskism subreddit. I was irritated seeing all of the misunderstandings, it was clear that most of the people were either passionate but ignorant, or simply reactionaries. I have recently picked the project back up and I have been working on it for the past couple of days. Of course, this is still a work in progress so it is far from finished. Any criticisms or suggestions on what else to add are welcome.

  1. Revolution first (NOT a political revolution)
“Two competing, entirely legal self-prop systems that have arisen in the U.S. during the last few decades are the politically correct left and the dogmatic right (not to be confused with the liberals and conservatives of earlier times in America). This book is not the place to speculate about the
outcome of the struggle between these two forces; suffice it to say that in the long run their bitter conflict may do more to prevent the establishment of a lastingly peaceful world order than all the bombs of Al Qeeda and all the murders of the Mexican drug gangs.” (Anti-Tech Revolution: Why and How, pg. 52-53)
This quote from Anti-Tech Revolution: Why and How will serve as a sort of fundamental basis for this section. TK sees the problem of governments and authority with his sociological theory of self-prop systems. Because TK holds the view that self-prop systems will support themselves regardless of what happens outside of their scope, his fundamental position brings him to the conclusion that no political system is designed to help humanity; all self-prop systems only support themselves (i.e. all governments are self-prop systems).
Would TK be against mandatory vaccinations? Would he support mask mandates? Would he believe the vaccine itself is a creation by the government as a mass conspiracy to follow orders? No one knows what TK’s position would be in regards to these certain issues; however, it is very clear that TK believes having any opinion on these issues is a waste of time. This is quite apparent in his works and transparent evidence exists everywhere throughout his writings.
In regards to revolution Kaczynski dislikes leftism for a multitude of reasons. A gestalt of his criticisms against leftism can be seen in ISAIF paragraphs 6-32 and 213-230. Of course, Kaczynski expands his list of problems with the leftists in his later works, however, it is clear that his greatest concern with leftism is its lack of a revolutionary cause and its want to reform as well as its inability of upholding a non-corrupt revolution. Leftists say that they want a revolution, but in reality what they really want is power. ISAIF paragraph 217:
“In earlier revolutions, leftists of the most power-hungry type, repeatedly, have first cooperated with non-leftist revolutionaries, as well as with leftists of a more libertarian inclination, and later have double-crossed them to seize power for themselves. Robespierre did this in the French Revolution, the Bolsheviks did it in the Russian Revolution, the communists did it in Spain in 1938 and Castro and his followers did it in Cuba. Given the past history of leftism, it would be utterly foolish for nonleftist revolutionaries today to collaborate with leftists”
It is clear that any “revolution” sparked by a leftist will not end the system, only propagate it. When leftists get a hold of revolutions they cooperate with other organizations (such as the Earth First! Movement. They unfortunately disregard the technological system issue and become part of the system itself after being invaded by leftists.):
‘The so-called "Green Revolution" of the latter part of the 20th century-the introduction of new farming technologies and of recently developed, highly productive varieties of grain-was supposed to alleviate hunger in the Third World by providing more abundant harvests. It did indeed provide more abundant harvests. But: "[A]lthough the 'Green Revolution' seems to have been a success as far as the national total cereal production figures are concerned, a look at it from the perspective of communities and individual humans indicates that the problems have far
outweighed the successes...."16 In some parts of the world the consequences of the Green Revolution have been nothing short of catastrophic. For example, in the Punjab (a region lying partly in India and partly in Pakistan), the Green Revolution has ruined "thousands of hectares of [formerly] productive land," and has led to severe lowering of the water table, contamination of the water with pesticides and fertilizers, numerous cases of cancer (probably due to the contaminated water), and many suicides.’
‘The green revolution has brought us only downfall,'' says Jarnail Singh....
'It ruined our soil, our environment, our water table. Used to be we had
fairs in villages where people would come together and have fun. Now we
gather in medical centers.’” (Anti-Tech revolution: why and how, P. 11)
In an unofficial conclusion of politics Kaczysnki writes:
“There are good reasons why humans' capacity to control the development of their societies has failed to progress. In order to control the development of a society you would have to be able to predict how the society would react to any given action you might take, and such predictions have generally proven to be highly unreliable. Human societies are complex systems-technologically advanced societies are most decidedly complex-and prediction of the behavior of complex systems presents difficulties that are not contingent on the present state of our knowledge or our level of technological development.” (Anti-tech Revolution: why and how, P. 13)
In other words, all of these ideologies have this unrealistic view of guessing where humanity will go after they try to “change” the system in the way they see fit. The minute you implement an ideology that focuses on the “betterment” of humanity you throw away any semblance of honesty as it is impossible to guess how the ideological implication will actually better humanity; all previous implementations have only helped the system. We can only be sure of one thing, Technological society has ruined the world and the only way to stop it is a revolution. TK believes we have substantial evidence against reformation; the evidence exists throughout all of industrial technologies history. He also believes that self-prop systems will only cause corruption (leftist revolutions). This is why after the revolution the organization that caused the revolution needs to disappear.
“Let's nevertheless make the improbable assumption that society had been transformed in the way advocated by Glendinning. Would the transformation be irreversible, as Rule (ii)* requires? That is, would society remain in its transformed condition without continuing effort by the neo-Iuddites? Not a chance! As discussed in Chapter Two, natural selection guarantees that conflict and competition for power would re-emerge after the neo-Iuddite utopia had been established. Even if one rejects the argument of Chapter Two, it is an observable fact that human affairs have usually if not always been characterized by conflict and competition, whether within
societies or between different societies. Glendinning does not explain what would prevent conflict and competition from reappearing and wrecking the neo-Iuddite utopia. In practice, the neo-Iuddite movement would be corrupted, just as every other radical movement that has become the dominant force in a society has been corrupted. Neo-Iuddite ideals would be
forgotten or would receive only lip-service, and the continued existence of modern technology (which Glendinning does not contemplate eliminating) would ensure society's inevitable return to its present destructive trajectory.” (Anti-tech revolution: why and how P. 133)
In response to conservatives TK writes his ever famous criticism:
“The conservatives are fools: They whine about the decay of traditional values, yet they enthusiastically support technological progress and economic growth. Apparently it never occurs to them that you can’t make rapid, drastic changes in the technology and the economy of a society without causing rapid changes in all other aspects of the society as well, and
that such rapid changes inevitably break down traditional values.” (ISAIF, P. 50)
Is this the extent to TK’s thoughts on conservatism? No, the very next paragraph is as follows:
“The breakdown of traditional values to some extent implies the breakdown of the bonds that hold together traditional small-scale social groups. The disintegration of small-scale social groups is also promoted by the fact that modern conditions often require or tempt individuals to move to new locations, separating themselves from their communities. Beyond that, a technological society HAS TO weaken family ties and local communities if it is to function efficiently. In modern society an individual’s loyalty must be first to the system and only secondarily to a small-scale community, because if the internal loyalties of small-scale communities were stronger than loyalty to the system, such communities would pursue
their own advantage at the expense of the system.” (ISAIF, P. 51)
It is apparent here, that conservatism (as well as leftism) is subservient to the system. There is no political ideology that will safely deviate from the system. You are either against the system's idea of a perfect civilization or you are not. No matter where you are on the political spectrum you must agree with the fall of technological society to agree with TK.
  1. The utopia of the technophiles and why it is self-defeating
A lot of technophiles and scientists go on and on about the inevitable human/machine hybrid that will exist in the future, they see it is a type of progress that will eventually lead to immortality and the dissemination of disease, poverty, social standing etc. Along with this technophiles often like to discuss artificial birthing, genetic tampering, and superintelligent A.I. On the surface this sounds like a dream come true, but it will very easily lead to complete disaster.
TK believes that there is no mathematically possible way to have complete knowledge of the future. This lack of complete knowledge always leads to disaster.
“There are in fact certain paradoxes involved in the notion of a system that predicts its own behavior. These are reminiscent of Russell's Paradox in set theory38 and of the paradoxes that arise when one allows a statement to talk about itself (e.g., consider the statement, "This statement is false"). When a system makes a prediction about its own behavior, that prediction may itself change the behavior of the system, and the change in the behavior of the system may invalidate the prediction. Of course, not every statement that talks about itself is paradoxical. For example, the statement, "This statement is in the English language" makes perfectly good sense.
Similarly, many predictions that a system may make about itself will not be self-invalidating; they may even cause the system to behave in such a way as to fulfill the prediction.39 But it is too much to hope for that a society's predictions about itself will never be (unexpectedly) self-invalidating.” (Anti-tech revolution: why and how P. 16)
Another notable quote is from his barely known and hard to come by essay Progress versus Wilderness.
“The great depression of the thirties was not a result of any natural catastrophe; it was an outgrowth of human economic behavior. Nobody wanted it, but it happened anyway. The pollution and congestion problems of our own era were not planned or expected; nobody wanted them, they just happened. The point is that millions of people functioning together in a complex system can produce effects that are desired by none of the individuals concerned. Our society is a vast machine, we are the components of that machine, and our individual wills do not govern the behavior of the machine.” (Progress versus Wilderness pg. 6)
Ultimately, our technological “progress” has led to unintentional pain and ecological disaster. Nobody wanted this, it is just the result of being a part of an unpredictable system that we have seemingly little control over. Imagine the problems and unpredictability of today but multiply them ten fold. Complete disaster is what happens when you add gene manipulations and hyper-intelligent AI into the system.
  1. It is impossible to remove yourself from the system
I often hear the neo-luddite community criticize TK and his followers for his views on revolution. “Why don’t you just work towards living alone in the forest away from technology.” This type of argument is also perpetuated by the critics of neo-luddism and anarcho-primitivism with a slightly different tone. “If you don’t like technology then why are you on the computer? Why do you have a car? That seems hypocritical” (This criticism is the one that I see most often on internet videos).
There are a couple of responses that TK has within his works. I often like to bring up this quote to combat the problem regarding “why don’t you just go live in a forest somewhere”
“The mountains of Western Montana offered me nearly everything I needed or wanted. If those mountains could have remained just as they were when I first moved to Montana in 1971, I would have been satisfied. The rest of the world could have had a herd mentality, or an individualistic mentality or whatever, and it would have been all the same to me. But, of course, under modern conditions there was no way the mountains could have remained isolated from the rest of the world. Civilization moved in and squeezed me,
So…..” (Technological Slavery: The Collected Writing of Ted Kaczysnki, pg.299)
There is also a response to civilization moving in by TK, it is probably my favorite quote from anything that TK has ever written (which is why I had to squeeze it in here).
“The next day I started for my home cabin. My route took me past a beautiful spot, a favorite place of mine where there was a spring of pure water that could safely be drunk without boiling. I stopped and said a kind of prayer to the spirit of the spring. It was a prayer in which I swore that I would take revenge for what was being done to the forest.” (Technological Slavery: The Collected Writing of Ted Kaczysnki, pg. 432)
We see here that TK was perfectly content with living the rest of his life in the mountains of Montana. The reason why he did what he did is because the technological society came after him. It has gotten much worse since TK wrote that letter, if you think anyone can just “escape the technological system” you are dead wrong. The only way to stop the madness is through complete revolution.
In response to “you are a hypocrite for using technology even though you are against technology” TK states this.
“On the other hand, if we can convince a person that a certain plan will be useful to society provided that a sufficient number of people follow the plan, this provides the person with at most a very weak motive to follow the plan, for he knows that it is very unlikely, or even impossible, that his own individual participation will by itself have any perceptible effect on society. For example: Many people know that it would be better for the world if everyone refused to use automobiles. Nevertheless, apart from rare exceptions, each one of these people has his automobile, because he says to himself that if he refuses to drive he will suffer great inconvenience without doing any perceptible good for the world; for the world will derive no
perceptible advantage unless many millions of people refuse to use automobiles.” (Technological Slavery: The Collected Writing of Ted Kaczysnki, pg. 413)
We can conclude from these excerpts that:
  1. Living in the woods without the intervention of the technological system is impossible.
  2. A single person choosing to not do something that A. Causes harm to the environment and B. causes a great inconvenience will most likely not create any great changes among the world.
Given these two points it is obvious that the most pragmatic way of preserving our human nature as well as the life of the planet is to create a worldwide revolution and to use any means necessary to make that happen.

I haven't checked this sub in a long time because my symptoms have basically dissipated entirely, but I remember scouring the internet for answers and having a hard time finding anything positive. I want my story to be out there to offer hope.
Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, and I'm not giving medical advice. I just want to share MY experience and what worked for ME, in addition to showing that you CAN heal from this condition. If anything resonates with you, then great!
Possible trigger warning: SA (mentioned but do not go in detail about it at all)

A little about me: I'm a woman and my symptoms started when I was 19 years old (I am now 28). I had nonstop urgency/pressure, and after a week of suffering went to a doctor and was diagnosed with a UTI. Following the treatment, my symptoms only got worse. The urgency seemed to increase. I couldn't sleep at night, couldn't concentrate. I spent all day feeling like I'd just finished half a gallon of water, only for almost nothing to come out when I went to the restroom.
I say several different specialists. Urinalysis came back normal, ultrasounds showed no abnormalities, and I refused a cystoscopy to check my bladder out of fear of physical damage (for better or for worse, I don't know). I was offered experimental drugs, but they had less than a 50% chance of working and severe side effects, so I also refused.
At this point I was feeling very lost. Tried the elimination diet for about 4-5 months, eating nothing but "IC safe" food. Nothing changed. I was stuck with these severe symptoms for about 3 years.
What ultimately helped me was eating a CLEAN, healthy diet with NO processed foods whatsoever, and good quality water. Also STAYING HYDRATED. This meant salads every day, and any protein/grain/etc was prepared at home so there weren't any additives. Nothing changed for a while... until it did. After about a year of eating clean, my symptoms all but disappeared one day. This was when I was traveling abroad. Maybe it was the combination of clean eating and destressing in a different country-- I really can't say.
My symptoms stayed away for a long time, until a couple years later when I moved to a new city and started picking up bad dietary habits again. Low and behold, my IC flared back up. I had it for 3 weeks, and thought I'd have to start everything over again. In desperation, I ended up going to a Chinese Herbalist, and I told them my symptoms. They suggested Ba Zheng San, which is normally used to treat UTI's. It cleared up my symptoms virtually overnight! I was amazing. I still get flair ups here and there, and if they last more than a day I take these herbs and they're usually gone by morning. Whether or not it's the herbs NOW, I don't know, but there's no doubt they helped me when my symptoms returned for 3 weeks.
Before I finish this off, I want to add there is a possible psychological/trauma component that may have an effect on IC. I haven't seen any official research, but it's a pattern I've noticed with other people who've shared their IC experiences: These symptoms often show up in people who've been SA'd. If this is the case for you, your body may be holding on to a lot of tension from the trauma, resulting in urgency. I did not see a specialist for this, but I did look up stretches and exercises to help with tension associated with post-SA trauma. I do think this helped to an extent.
Regardless of whether or not you've been a victim of SA, stress and tension can exacerbate your symptoms. Seek counseling if you can, practice mindfulness, stretch, meditate. These things can help.
Also, calming herbs can ease your mind. Passion flower is a good one.
And no, believe me, I’m not saying that this is all in your head, don’t worry!! I know these symptoms are VERY real and sometimes need to have physical treatments. But I can’t help but make a point about this connection since it’s come up a lot.
I did also use herbs throughout the duration of my affliction, but I don't know if any of them actually helped me so I don't want to highlight them too much. Here's what I tried, in case anyone wants to know:
-Chaste berry tea (AKA Monk's Pepper or Vitex)
-Marshmallow root tea
-Nettle tea
-D-mannose (for a very short period of time)
That is all for now. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any further questions, or if you have anything to add.
I'd also like to acknowledge that I understand that not everyone is comfortable with the "alternative" medicine I used for myself, and I understand and respect that. All I know is that it worked for me, and it's worth putting out into the world in case it helps someone else, even if it's just 1 person.
Sending love and good wishes to everyone!

2023.03.21 18:52 Fearless_Sail_9572 New here.

Hello, I am drug injured by Metronidazole three years ago and now am dealing with this SIBO nightmare. I live in Wisconsin and have had the worst luck with doctors and hospitals. I can not hardly work for the last four months due to being so ill. I had all scans done and everything is normal even though we become the sickest people. I will not take prescription drugs ever since Flagyl! I did not have the breath test done since no one does them around here. I can't afford to buy the home kit so I'm treating myself as if I have hydrogen SIBO. I started using oil of oregano, berberine complex and neem but did not do a full 30 to 60 day treatment. I followed Dr. Siebecker's dosage but my gosh, nine pills of oregano, 6 pills of berberine and 1 pill of neem? I have to mega-dose on B1 and magnesium every day since Flagyl so that's a lot of pills every day. Now I have been using Motility Pro at bedtime on an empty stomach plus Atrantil after meals for five days and I ordered Triphala now. I have non-stop pain and nausea yet but I'm willing to give this a try. I eat crystallized ginger or drink ginger tea when nauseous. Has anyone taken more than one pill of the Motility Pro by Ortho Molecular? I looked it up and all say one capsule a day on an empty stomach. I may have hormone issues along with this since I'm 55. I have not been so ill in my life since taking Flagyl. I read an article where it says to use other pro kinetics and see what works for you. I did watch the video with the guy who suffered for six years and took Motility Pro. I'm going to try this for a month and if nothing happens then I will somehow have to find a doctor who is a SIBO specialist even if I have to go to Chicago or somewhere for help.

2023.03.21 18:50 Rohweko AITA for severing me and my father’s relationship?

For sake of my own safety you can call me Argie, I’m 22 and I live in the south. Over the last week I’ve decided to end and break my relationship with my father.
For some background I grew up with just him, my birth mother left when I was a year old to party, sleep around, and so drugs, came back when I was 9 lied about her recovering and spent the next 3 years beating me and using me to make herself look far better. It wasn’t until 3 years later where I cut her off and the explanation I gave to my family was bull shit. I didn’t even tell them the real reason until I was 18.
All throughout my child hood though my father was harsh in ALOT of ways. Screamed a shit ton and was hella tough on me, FORCED ME to do physical sports since I’ve always been strong for 10 years and fucked my body up. Was extremely obsessive with me in what I did and choosing my path for me. For context he’s a radical conservative far and beyond. He tracked me with my phone he gave me , stalked my social media, and from what I was told he had people follow me all the time. He had beef with my mothers side of the family always tried to demonize them as well. Kept me from many forms of media and games even. (Pokémon for example.)
On the outside to others people said he was great! I should be happy with my childhood but the thing is they only see the base level of who he is , he does nice things from time to time and he uses that as his crutch. Almost like some mega narcissist shit but personally I don’t even know to this day. But when I got in my later teens stuff got far worse. I started feeling different, realized I have same sex attraction, so when I was 15 I told him! He decided to go batshit, took me to counseling at 16 ON MH BIRTHDAY, a religious therapist mind you and when SHE EVEN CALLED HIM OUT saying his treatment of me for this and my whole life is wrong. He then stormed out and left me STRANDED THERE. I was a crying fetal position mess in the parking lot where my elder brother had to come get me. To this day he lies and denies he did that, even with multiple witnesses and proof.
Skip forward to present day, I’ve went through a lot, a hella of a lot of my trauma shit but I’m still here! I’m in college for design I got all A’s, I work 50 hours a week at the same time even, met a nice guy I’m dating from college and he’s great, treats me well , it’s really healthy and fun! I’m not in any massive debt I’m healthier mentally and physically but the issue is my father is still well himself. No change or anything. Mind you in the last 2 years he’s made physical harm threats to me for shit ranging from not liking and wanting to hang with his new wife to not taking up the trash. Hell I pay 500$ in rent witn my shitty job to live in the unfinished basement with no insulation.
After taking to a therapist and others they’ve suggested to me to do what I should’ve done a while ago and end that relationship
AITA? Or am I doing the right thing?

Predictmedix (CSE: PMED, OTC: PMEDF, FRA: 3QP) Continues Expansion With High-Margin Revenues
Predictmedix (CSE: PMED, OTC: PMEDF, FRA: 3QP) announced several updates regarding business expansions in the last couple of weeks. The company that provides workplace health and safety improvements thanks to AP-powered products notably stated it has begun to produce its mobile application for detecting impairment from cannabis and alcohol. Combined with high-margin revenues, there is no doubt why the stock price increases after news is released.

What is the issue?
Over the world, law enforcement and high-risk businesses have struggled with the problem of alcohol and cannabis-related impairment, and the present testing procedures are cumbersome, expensive, and time-consuming. Drug testing businesses have struggled to develop a single product that combines dependability, speed, cost-effectiveness, and non-invasiveness. Businesses and organizations have been dealing with issues for a long time are addressed by the portable solution from Predictmedix, designed for law enforcement agencies and other high-risk mobility industries.
The global workplace safety market is expected to grow at a fast pace. The 13.5% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) should bring the market’s valuation to USD $26.7B by 2027.
Company Overview
Predictmedix is a rising international provider of fast health assessments, medical supplies, and options for remote patient treatment. The company’s Safe Entry Stations use multispectral cameras to evaluate physiological data patterns and detect indicators of exhaustion, impairment from cannabis or alcohol, infectious disease, and crucial physiological factors. These stations use specialized artificial intelligence (AI). Using multispectral cameras, the company’s Safe Entry Stations may detect indicators of weariness, impairment from alcohol or cannabis use, infectious infections, and other critical physiological factors. Another advantage is the company’s capacity to monitor signs of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Because Covid causes distinctive physiological patterns, its solution will be able to identify, evaluate, and then decide whether or not that person is likely to be infected. A real-time examination will decide whether any more testing is necessary. Predictmedix’s AI will learn how new symptoms present novel patterns from which to continue recognizing infection as the virus evolves.
It gives numerous benefits in financial terms. Screening as a Service provides multi-year contracts and high-margin recurring revenue. Safe Entry’s technology is supported and tested (CE Mark and ISO certified). Through innumerable placements and events that received excellent evaluations and were successfully published in peer-reviewed publications, Secure Entry provides organizations all over the world with the confidence and effectiveness they require.

On March 15, Predictmedix announced it has started manufacturing its AI-powered mobile application that rapidly detects impairment from alcohol and cannabis. In numbers, the screening machine’s processing time takes less than 30 seconds to complete, and has a success rate of over 90%. The Safe Entry was notably tested by 1600 persons at the University of Jakarta, and Indonesia prepares the products for regulatory approval listed as Medical Devices.
“We are happy to announce to our shareholders that we are making very good progress with our portable solution for detecting impairment in individuals. From our research and discussions with high-level contacts, we believe our product will be in high demand in multiple industry verticals worldwide. In 2021, the drug screening market size was valued at over $5.2 Billion with revenue forecasted at over $22 Billion in 20302, making this another lucrative opportunity for Predictmedix.”
Dr. Rahul Kushwah, Chief Operating Officer
Share Structure / Financials
The latest financial statements occurred for the period ending October 31, 2022. On this date, the company issued 119M shares. We also can notice Predictmedix has 7.2M warrants at $0.27 and only 580k options at $0.40. These numbers don’t include the following $610k financing. Indeed on February 13, Predictmedix raised $612k by issuing 12.25M shares at $0.05. Entitled to each share is a $0.10 warrant. The net proceeds issued from the financing will be used for general options including business development and technology upgrades.
The stock price trades at $0.15 (March 18). After witnessing a constant downtrend over 2022, 2023 saw brighter days, notably thanks to commercialization targets. After undergoing a 52-week low of $0.025, PMED pushes towards its 52-week high of $0.21.
The company has made the same amount in gross profit and generated $3.5k in revenue during the quarter. The company experienced a $459 loss in the interim, primarily as a result of consultancy expenditures ($152k), management fees ($80k), and marketing costs ($86k). We can point out that Predictmedix has meager revenue costs, which means that costs will be quickly covered if sales start to come in.

https://preview.redd.it/3j7xsh83r4pa1.jpg?width=977&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=222ed5ecb00cc80523c969f79020cd5fc355a5db
“In 2023, Predictmedix will be hyper-focused on commercialization, securing high-revenue recurring placements for workplaces in industries such as mining, manufacturing, warehousing, construction, and other industries where employee health and safety remain of high priority.”
As proof of this statement, the company announced a purchase order (March 6, 2023) from DefSpace, a global platform for Defense, Space, and Aerospace. This company will lease four stations, each of which will generate $2.5k per month in recurring revenue for a four-year deal, totalling $500k.
Conclusion
More than ever, Predictmedix (CSE: PMED, OTC: PMEDF, FRA: 3QP) is ready to move from the development to the commercialization phase. The secured contract with DefSpace marks a milestone for the company, and other contracts should follow soon. High margins offer the company to be quickly profitable, and this is something you have to consider about Predictmedix. Many companies have issues with returning a positive EBITDA, and it won’t be the PMED’s case.

When can I check in to the campgrounds?
Insomniac put together a handy entry guide for camping that is available here
What are the guidelines for camping? I have more questions related to camping!
Insomniac put together their camping guidelines and camping FAQ pages related to camping and they are very informative. I'm not going to re-type all this information here, so use the links provided.
My wristband/parking pass/shuttle pass hasn't come yet!
Be patient, they will be shipping out over 100k+ packages when they go out. You can also call Front Gate Tickets to see where your shipment is and/or set up will call pickup @ 888.512.7469. Also here's the Front Gate Tickets Support Site.
If you are coming from outside of the USA, you have no choice but to go to will call for your tickets. Please see the above event information for the box office location and hours.
I have tickets/shuttle passes/parking passes to sell!
Check out EDCTickets! Remember, even though our community is friendly, caring, and kind, there are ticket scammers out there that are willing to take advantage. Be vigilant, if something seems to good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts.
Where can I register my Wristband? Do I have to register my wristband?
You can register it here. The only way to recover your wristband if it is lost or stolen is to have it registered. Additionally, there is emergency contact information stored in your wristband as part of the registration process, if anything should happen to you. There is a $40 fee for a replacement wristband.
Well this is embarassing, I didn't listen to everyone and put my wristband on early/on the wrong hand, how can I get it off? I sold my wristband after I attended one of the nights, how can I get it off without damaging it?
Here's a short how-to video to remove the wristband without damaging anything. DON'T PUT YOUR WRISTBAND ON UNTIL FRIDAY BEFORE YOU LEAVE YOUR HOTEL! It goes on your right wrist, and should be able to fit a finger underneath for breathing room.
I'm going solo to the fest, how can I make friends, I need a place to stay, etc.
There are several ways of doing this. You can use the search function on the subreddit. There's also some Facebook groups dedicated to solo journeys to EDC. Once again, trust your instincts here and only stay with people that you can properly personally have vetted ahead of time.
Also, check the useful links above for ride shares, hotel shares, and tent shares!
Live sets just aren't doing it for me, I need a feel for what this place is like before I attend!
Check out Electric Daisy Carnival 2000, Under the Electric Sky, or The Electric Daisy Carnival Experience trailer from when the festival was still in L.A. If you can find The Electric Daisy Carnival Experience online for free somewhere or even for a couple bucks to stream it, I think it's a much better movie than the Under the Electric Sky movie.

FAQ

When do the set times drop? When does the app update? I can't find the app on the app store, what gives?!
Set times and app updates usually happen the week of the festival. The Insomniac app will update the week of the festival, so go ahead and install it now if you want to.
What about pool parties or other EDC Week events?
Official site here for a list of events and tickets. There's also going to be parties and pools at the campground.
What time should I leave the strip? How long does it take to get to/from to the speedway? What time should I leave the event to beat traffic?
EDC is not like a local DJ show and Las Vegas traffic SUCKS. Parking lots open at 2PM, so I would strive to leave the strip right around that time. Without traffic it will take you anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. The longer into the night you wait to leave the worse off traffic will be and the longer it will take to get to the show. I have heard nightmare scenarios of 2 or 3 hour shuttle rides, so don't let it happen to you!
Typically, you can leave before the sunrise sets or about halfway through it and not have too bad of a wait in traffic back to the strip in the morning! At the end of night 3, keep in mind normal people are also heading to work since it will technically be Monday morning. That's just going to add to the cluster fuck of traffic on I-15 and Las Vegas Blvd. Plan accordingly! If you are driving have a cooler in the trunk with water bottles!
Are we doing the Reddit meetup again this year?
We sure are. Check out the links up top regarding information on where and when we are meeting up. We are going to have two simultaneous meetups, one for campers and one for people on the Strip. All information is contained in the post linked at the very top!
What can I bring into the festival? What can't I bring into the festival? What are the searches like?
The searches could be TSA style, or you could barely get touched at all. It's pretty random. Consider stash boxers or compression underwear to get your favors inside or items that are disallowed like LED gloves, etc.
If you take your time to observe the security, you can usually get a feel of who is being a hard-ass for a dime raise for busting someone and who is just doing their job quickly and efficiently.
As for allowed and disallowed items, here's a link to those lists as well as totem guidelines.
Bring a gallon zip lock bag and put all of your belongings that you want to bring into the festival in it while you are waiting in line. All three days last year security complimented me on being organized and how easy I made their jobs because they could just scan the items in the bag, check my camelbak, give me the pat down and I was on my way.
Seriously, if you make security's lives easier in this way, they will not hassle you at all as long as you aren't trying to bring in stuff that isn't allowed. I didn't even get pat down on Night 2 because I was so up-front about all my belongings.
Any further questions, feel free to comment below, or visit the EDC Las Vegas Guide page!

Tips and Tricks!

  • Put an Emergency Contact Information (ICE) on your phone's lock screen. Android or Apple. This serves as two things.. One, if you lose your phone, someone can try to get it back to you. TWO, if you get hurt or fall out, the medics on site can get in contact with someone you know.
  • Call your bank/credit card companies and let them know you will be traveling to Vegas to avoid holds on your account.
  • Be vigilant on the Strip. Everyone is trying to hustle. Street performers will expect tips if you take pictures!
  • Hit up a Vegas buffet at least one day.
  • Stretch beforehand in your hotel room. Your muscles will thank you in the morning!
  • Wear comfy shoes and/or get insoles to replace the "stock" insoles that come with your shoes. Also, consider moleskin if your feet are prone to blistering from rubbing against your socks. Your feet will thank you!
  • Get to the festival early. Stop by the merchandise tent first thing. Items sell out fast. Consider a mobile charging locker to store your merchandise in! Additionally, if you bring all of your sealed items in on the first day (wipes, chapstick, cigarettes, gum, tampons, etc), you can keep them all in your locker overnight and not have to worry about getting 3 of each sealed item to bring in every single day. REMEMBER! Hide your lock combo from people that may peer over your shoulder or look at your combination wristband and try to get into your locker. Remain vigilant inside the festival!
  • After you get your merch and put it in your locker, you next stop should be one of the free water stands to fill up your hydration pack or water bottle. It's very important to remain hydrated, especially while the sun is still out and bearing down on you! If you tip some of the vendors, they will give you ice if the warm water turns you off.
  • If you need to eat something, consider the food trucks instead of the concession stand food. The food trucks have their company name out there and on the line when compared to the generic concession stand stuff, the quality of the food is unparalleled. Don't make the same mistake as I did a few years ago and get a raw onion sandwich masked as a "cheese steak".
  • Bring earplugs! Tinnitus sucks!
  • Wear sunscreen! Remember, if you are staying all night the sun is up at like 5AM and starts beaming down on you almost immediately.
  • If you want to ride the rides, get there early or risk missing sets while standing in line! Some rides you will be waiting for an hour or more at peak times.
  • Time-stamp your texts! There will be cell service congestion. Stamping your texts will help your friends know whenever you truly sent a message!
  • Bring an external battery pack in with you to charge your phone if you are someone who likes to take a lot of photo and video!
  • Bring cash. Credit and debit cards could possibly be hit or miss if the speedway's internet network would happen to shit the bed! Don't be stuck without a way to pay for something you need!
  • Remember to take it easy night 1! EDC is a marathon not a sprint!
  • Emergen-C packets are a lifesaver. Take one before the festival every night in order to help you recover from the night before and prepare for the festival ahead!
  • Take some time to look up and enjoy the fireworks!
  • Don't forget about the EDC parade down Rainbow Road every night! You should at least try to check it out one time out of the three nights you are there! Check the app for times, but it should be around midnight every night!
  • Follow your favorite artists' social media so that you know if they may show up unannounced, or if they are doing any surprise sets on one of the art cars, etc.
  • Send a post card to back home at the EDC Town Post Office. Mine took until October in 2017 to land, but it was a nice surprise when it finally did! Check out EDC Town in general. It's pretty sweet.
  • If you are feeling at all dehydrated or anything else medical related, visit one of the medical tents. Staff is super friendly and you WILL NOT get in trouble for seeking medical treatment, no matter your condition. If you can't make it to the medical tent, look for a Ground Control staff member to assist you or any of your friends! Look out for your fellow ravers. If you see something, say something! This will keep everyone safe and having a good time.
  • If you are going to do drugs, and especially MDMA, I suggest only doing it 1 out of the 3 nights and finding something else for the other two days. Just to let you know as an example of responsible use, in 2017 we did edibles and shatter the first night, rolled night 2, and just chilled with some shatter night 3. Everyone is different, but be safe, and TEST YOUR SHIT. Do not buy drugs at the festival. Not only do you risk getting bunk shit, but undercover cops are everywhere!
  • If you are going to drink alcohol, do so in moderation and stay hydrated! For every alcoholic drink you have, you should drink 8-16oz of water!
  • If you are a lady, bring wipes! Usually the porta-potties run out of toilet paper. It's just a fact of the festival and usually they don't get resupplied until the following day. You will thank me if you get caught in this situation.
  • Bring a hand fan for the water lines! They can get pretty hot and people will love you!
  • Try to catch at least one sunrise set one of the nights. I recommend night 2, since everyone and their mothers will be staying on night 3. Plus, Monday morning rush hour traffic on night 3 is no bueno.
  • If you have a large crew and need to split up to see different sets, plan a meeting spot! Try to pick something that is stationary, like the locker area, the cooling area, one of the buildings in EDC Town, etc.
