I feel like everything being enjoyed by young to mid millenials and zoomers is just steeped in a billion layers of irony to the point where nothing is being enjoyed on it's own merits, but rather it's relation to the modern world and the type of people who consume it. It's all irony 101, but for the last decade now this has pretty much been the thesis of modern trends/art. It's funny/interesting because the artist "knows better" than someone who would execute that same type of art sincerely.
There's this contrived affect of being in on some joke, or having some over analytical opinion about some piece of "art" that's just kind of dull or intentionally dumb. For a lot of those aforementioned examples, whenever there is some critique or pushback, people will jump to "nooooooo you just don't get the layers of it" when in reality I think a lot of people do, and that's why they find it gay. I find it really annoying when someone thinks it's so novel that they like, say they're REALLY into Rebecca Black, but they're a hardcore guy with tattoos! The self awareness kind of kills it for me. Feels forced.
