2023.03.31 17:50 WolfieZee Would you like to see more random events in the open world/dungeons?

I see a lot of discourse about the repetitive feel to the dungeons, as well as some criticism about certain times in the open world where you’re just walking and nothing is happening. I remember reading a dev commentary a while back that said they modeled the open world to an extent around RDR2 in terms of the random public events that can occur—but also needed to scale back some of the mobs at one point in development because it just got too crowded in the world.
During my first run of the Lights Watch dungeon I was happy with the amount of enemy dialogue there was, a dying NPC crawling on the ground, and the butcher appearing out of nowhere to stalk me through the level. But then all the subsequent dungeons just had me completing sorta boring objectives while running around killing mobs.
Was wondering if others thought it’d be cool if devs implemented more random events or small world building elements to dungeons and the open world to add some spice to your journey?
Obviously there’s a limit before it gets overwhelming or takes away from the core experience, but I wrote down some possible ideas.
Open World Events (Can be completely ignored like in RDR to prevent breaking your flow/travel)

  1. Moving caravan you have to protect until it gets to a town
  2. NPC challenges you to hunting contest
  3. NPC challenges you to monster killing contest
  4. NPC lures you into an ambush with some lie (Help my husband, he’s in trouble right over there! >.>)
  5. Town is under attack at the gates by mobs
  6. Bandits harassing a traveller, you can choose to help out or not.
Dungeon Events (As “intrusive” as the butcher, or as small as little bits of dialogue from enemies when entering a room to add flair)

  1. As you open a gate into a small room, an enemy closes it behind you and spawns a difficult enemy in the small room.
  2. Injured NPC asks you to go save their friend in a different part of the dungeon
  3. Healthy NPC offers to join you to clear a path to obtain some treasure somewhere in the dungeon
  4. A really slow moving but scary motherfucker spawns and slowly stalks you through the dungeon
Please definitely respond with your ideas too if ya want.

The New York grand jury investigating Trump’s 2016 hush-money payments to adult film actor Stormy Daniels has voted to indict the former president. While we don’t know the full range of charges, Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg’s office confirmed that they were forthcoming tonight when it released a statement saying, “This evening we contacted Mr. Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.’s office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal.”
This is the first time in history a former United States president has been indicted, although it is worth remembering that it is not new for our justice system to hold elected officials accountable. Mayors have been indicted and convicted. So have governors: in fact, four of the past ten Illinois governors have gone to prison. Vice presidents, too, have been charged with crimes: Aaron Burr was indicted on two counts of murder in 1804 while still in office and was tried for treason afterward. And in 1973, Richard Nixon’s vice president Spiro Agnew resigned after pleading no contest to tax evasion to avoid prison time.
That Trump’s indictment is happening in New York has likely made it harder for Trump to drum up the mobs he has been inciting to defend him. New York City notoriously dislikes the former real estate man. Voters of Tomorrow official Victor Shi was at the Manhattan district attorney’s office this evening and found no one protesting. When people did show up, he tweeted, they were not Trump supporters. They were women carrying signs that said, “‘Trump is guilty’ and ‘The Time Is Now,’” he wrote. “People in the background are chanting, ‘Way to go, ladies!’ NYC is rejoicing.”
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, to whom Trump people feel comfortable talking, said that the Trump camp at Mar-a-Lago is “in…shock” at the news. They thought yesterday’s announcement that the grand jury will go on a break in early April indicated that nothing would happen before the jury reconvened. As Haberman points out, Trump has been afraid of indictments for many years, and while some speculate this indictment might help his political profile (I disagree with that, by the way), he is unhappy to see it finally arrive. He did, though, immediately start fundraising off it.
Trump also released quite a long, antisemitic statement blaming “Radical Left Democrats” for a “Witch-Hunt” and saying this is “blatant Election interference.” House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) also quickly reinforced Trump's argument, saying that Bragg had “irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election,” and a number of other Republican officials reinforced that sentiment.
That is quite a position to take. The vote to indict came not from Bragg himself, but from a grand jury made up of ordinary Americans, and none of us knows what’s in the indictment, so one can hardly object to it in good faith.
CNN reporter Melanie Zanona reports that Trump has been working the phones tonight, reaching out to Republican allies to shore up support. Some of them, of course, are trying to discredit Bragg’s work by investigating him. Trump is at his company’s property in Florida, Mar-a-Lago. Florida governor Ron DeSantis echoed Trump’s antisemitism and accusations, tweeting that Florida would “not assist in an extradition request.” But Article IV, Section 2, of the United States Constitution says, “A Person charged in any State with Treason, Felony, or other Crime, who shall flee from Justice, and be found in another State, shall on Demand of the executive Authority of the State from which he fled, be delivered up, to be removed to the State having Jurisdiction of the Crime.”
So either DeSantis is planning to violate the Constitution, or he recognizes that Trump will probably return to New York voluntarily, or—and this is the most likely—he is posturing to pick up Trump voters while secretly rejoicing that this will likely make it harder for Trump to win the Republican presidential nomination. While all eyes were on Trump this evening, paperwork was filed in the Florida Senate to begin the process of revising election laws, possibly so that DeSantis can run for president without resigning as governor, as under current Florida law he must.
But there was something striking about Trump’s statement. In blaming the “Radical Left Democrats” for their “Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement,” he wrote, “You remember it just like I do: Russia, Russia, Russia; the Mueller Hoax; Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine; Impeachment Hoax 1; Impeachment Hoax 2; the illegal and unconstitutional Mar-a-Lago raid; and now this.”
It's not a list to be proud of, but that wording—“you remember it just like I do”—jumped out. Trump always goes back to what he calls the Russia hoax, his second attempt to rewrite the way people thought about his presidency (the first was the size of the crowd at his inauguration).
From the very start of his presidency, when the Federal Bureau of Investigation caught Trump's then–national security advisor Michael Flynn lying about his contact with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, more and more information has come out tying the Trump campaign to Russian operatives. As it did, Trump insisted that his followers must believe that all that information was a lie. If they believed his lies rather than the truth over the Russia scandal, they would trust him rather than believe the truth about everything.
The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has given a new frame to Russia’s attempts to interfere in the 2016 election. A piece by Jim Rutenberg in the New York Times Magazine in November 2022 pulled together testimony given both to the Mueller investigation and the Republican-dominated Senate Intelligence Committee, transcripts from the impeachment hearings, and recent memoirs. Rutenberg showed that in 2016, Russian operatives had presented to Trump advisor and later campaign manager Paul Manafort a plan “for the creation of an autonomous republic in Ukraine’s east, giving Putin effective control of the country’s industrial heartland, where Kremlin-armed, -funded, and -directed “separatists” were waging a two-year-old shadow war that had left nearly 10,000 dead.”
In exchange for weakening the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), undermining the U.S. stance in favor of Ukraine in its attempt to throw off the Russians who had invaded in 2014, and removing U.S. sanctions from Russian entities, Russian operatives were willing to put their finger on the scale to help Trump win the White House.
Rutenberg notes that Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine looks a lot like a way to achieve the plan it suggested in 2016 but, thanks to a different president in the U.S., that invasion did not yield the results Russian president Vladimir Putin expected. The Russian economy is crumbling, and Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Russia's Wagner group of mercenaries is "suffering an enormous amount of casualties in the Bakhmut area.” He called it a “slaughter-fest" for the Russians. Today, Putin issued an order to conscript another 147,000 soldiers by July 15.
Pressure on Putin continues to mount. The International Criminal Court’s March 17 arrest warrant against him and his children’s rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, for war crimes apparently caught Russian leadership by surprise. It isolates Russia and worries other Russian lawmakers that they will be charged as well, weakening their support for Putin. “Now proximity to the president isn’t just talk,” one political strategist said, “it’s a real step towards being prosecuted by international law enforcement.”
And President of the European Commission (which is the executive of the European Union) Ursula von der Leyen today warned that as the European Union rethinks its trade policies, China could find itself isolated as well if it continues to support Russia. “How China continues to interact with Putin’s war will be a determining factor for EU-China relations going forward,” she said.
Meanwhile, Turkey today dropped its opposition to Finland’s membership in NATO, a membership Finland has pursued in the wake of Russia’s recent aggression. Finland shares an 830-mile border with Russia, and now it will be part of NATO.
Under such pressure, Russia today took the extraordinary step of detaining American journalist Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, accusing him of spying. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed deep concern and urged U.S. citizens living or traveling in Russia to “leave immediately.”
Yesterday, another study of the Russian invasion of Ukraine invited us to look backward as well as forward. Britain’s Royal United Services Institute, a government-affiliated think tank, released a report on Russia’s “covert and clandestine operations, psychological operations, subversion, sabotage, special operations and intelligence and counterintelligence activities” designed to destabilize Ukraine and take it over. The report’s focus was on the current war in Ukraine, but as Josh Kovensky of Talking Points Memo notes, it establishes that some of the same people behind the destabilization of Ukrainian politics were part of Trump’s world. Notably, Russian operative Andrii Derkach not only worked to grab Ukraine for Russia, but also escorted Trump ally Rudy Giuliani around Ukraine in 2019 to dig up dirt on Biden.
In the end, as legal dominoes begin to fall, it might be that Americans do not, in fact, remember the history of his presidency from “Russia, Russia, Russia” forward the same way Trump does.

2023.03.31 17:47 Clean_Environment670 Looking for hope from any other distance runners out there?

Hi all- I am about 14 weeks postpartum with my first child (I'm 36) and have a stage 1 cystocele and rectocele. Prolapse was my worst fear going into pregnancy because prior to conceiving I was a marathon runner (2 per year attempting to get one in every US state by the time I'm 50) and running is a huge part of my identity and happiness.
I'm currently in PT and she assures me I will marathon again and has me beginning to test the waters by running short amounts on the treadmill but my symptoms have been feeling worse as a result and I'm getting discouraged.
I know less than 4 months postpartum is not much (started PT at around 7 weeks postpartum) but I'm scared I'll never be able to just pop out the door for a long run when I feel like it. Or even just be able to poop normally without concentrating on doing everything right and micromanaging my fiber intake or taking miralax etc.
I had even dreamed of doing a 50k or even 50 miler someday and now I feel like I'm ruined. I love my baby but I wouldn't have chosen this path if I knew this would destroy me physically forever and that's a terrible feeling. I know it could be way worse but it's hard to stay positive sometimes.
Any success stories or hopes from other long distance runners with prolapse out there?

2023.03.31 17:46 TheKillah The Shadows of the Past bonus sheet is terrible for the MTGA economy and a huge step in the wrong direction.

Tl;dr: Shadows of the Past, while a fun idea, is a scam and a terrible precedent due to low drop rates for rares and mythics.

Shadows of the Past is the collective name for the original Innistrad cards included in Shadows over Innistrad Remastered packs. These “bonus sheets” as they are often referred to in paper usually replace a common in a pack at a set rate.

Shadows of the Past is the third bonus sheet released thus far in Arena, with the Mystical Archive being released alongside Strixhaven and the Retro Artifacts being released alongside Brothers War. There are currently plans to release a fourth bonus sheet in March of the Machines, and though we are not yet sure if these will all be implemented into Arena we know that at least most of them will be.

However, Shadows of the Past has multiple problems with it that makes collecting the cards very difficult without spending your precious wild cards:

  1. It is the first Bonus Sheet that is not part of a standard set, as the Kaladesh inventions were skipped in Kaladesh Remastered. This means that the set is only draftable for one month compared to the usual 3 + standard rotation for two years in Quick Draft (indeed, SIR will likely never be quick-draftable).
  2. Unlike standard sets, there are no mastery passes for Remastered sets, and players will very rarely ever receive free SIR packs without purchasing them or drafting.
  3. Non-standard sets have no golden packs or equivalent (though you do get golden packs by purchasing SIR packs).
  4. Bonus sheet mythics are not available in the mythic slot opened in a Mythic pack.
  5. Worst of all, hidden deep within the MTGA drop rate article, drop rates for Rare/Mythics in Shadows of the Past slots are abysmally low at 1/15 for Rares and 1/30 for Mythics. This is low compared to past standard sets AND bonus sheets:

Set # of Rares Rare Rate # of Mythics Mythic Rate Packs for Rare Complete Packs for Mythic Complete
Mystical Archives (Historic Legal) 96 4 out of 15* 44 1 out of 15 360 660
Mystical Archives (All) 120 4 out of 15* 60 1 out of 15 450 900
Retro Artifacts 120 5 out of 15 (1/3) 60 1 out of 15 360 900
Shadows of the Past 48 1 out of 15 48 1 out of 30 720 1440
Shadows over Innistrad Remastered 264 49 out of 60** 92 7 out of 60** 323 789
"Normal" Standard Set 240 49 out of 60** 80 7 out of 60** 294 686
*Estimated, based on published paper drop rates and 17lands limited data
**1/30 mythic WC, 1/30 rare WC. Mythic drop rates vary by set but is usually between 1/7 and 1/8 for standard sets.

That’s right, if you were rare and mythic complete in SIR by opening just packs, you would need to open 650 more packs – almost double! - to complete the Shadows of the Past bonus sheet.

To top it all off, for those who aim for set completion through drafts, 9 of the 12 mythics are available in drafts only for a single week. Luckily these are at a slightly boosted rate of 1/15 in limited packs – you’d still have to open 540 limited packs across 180 drafts if everyone at the table picks them on sight. In one week.

With everything put together, the Mythic Shadows of the Past cards (and to a lesser extent, the rares) are literally the rarest non-promo cards on Magic Arena, in a remastered set that is otherwise pretty weak on a PioneeHistoric power level, arguably only an average set to draft, and one that is available for an extremely limited time.

Why is this such a problem?

Well… these cards could have been printed at any rarity or frequency. This is a digital only set. Shadows of the Past rares and mythics had no paper basis to rely on for their drop rates, and could have had limited packs have different drop rates than store packs. In order to sell the set better, WotC could have advertised high drop rates for cool and interesting cards. Instead, they nerfed them to be worse than any other bonus sheet beforehand. For a game that promotes itself as a collectible card game, this is incredibly anti-consumer, and the fact that it’s hidden in a 20+ page drop rate article really just proves that Wizards is being malicious about it.

Ever since 2020, with the introduction of Jumpstart, remastered sets, bonus sheets and Alchemy, WotC has continued to push new rares/mythics on players without notably changing the ways that FTP players can receive or win cards. Hell, we are 3 months into 2023, and we have had as many mythics printed this year on Magic Arena (240) than we did in 2018 (236) or 2019 (240) for each entire year. Without a dust/shard system like other digital CCGs, printing such an obscene amount of cards and making them more difficult to obtain at the same time has clearly become part of WotC's strategy to force players into buying wild card bundles or large numbers of packs to stay relevant. Golden packs were a big step in the right direction towards fixing this, but the Shadows of the Past bonus sheet was a huge step in the wrong direction that WotC was probably hoping you wouldn't notice.

2023.03.31 17:46 Friendly_Narwhal4999 Not knowing what a normal relationship looks like

I’ve been broken up with my bpd ex for 10 months but the final discard where she decided to walk out of my life forever-as a future partner or friend or anything was only a month ago. She decided she was shutting me out of her whole life for good.
I’m not sure what bpd fleas I have now. And how to judge future relationships. I’m seeing someone now from my past. The relationship wasn’t toxic, I was just hung up on my ex and still caught in her web so I ended things. We are enjoying our time together a lot. We have known each other 2 years and we have been back in romance mode for about 4 months.
She doesn’t invite me to hang out with her friends or family. She is very introverted, socially anxious, and she likes to keep our friends and family separate. She doesn’t wanna hang with mine either. This really rubs me the wrong way and I’ve explained it to her. It’s hard because the bpd ex wanted to do everything together…she couldn’t get enough of me being around.
She also doesn’t like to hang out that much. The most I get to see her is 3x a week for 2-3 hours at most. Usually it’s more like twice a week for a couple hours. I’d really like to see her more. I’d like our lives to be a little more involved. I feel like we’re acting like we just met but we have been in a deep intimate relationship for years at this point, even if it was off and on. It’s not because of my ex….she was like this before too. She keeps her friends and family all separate this way. And she enjoys time alone a lot and isolates frequently to recharge. It’s got nothing to do with me.
She just doesn’t want to see me that often or for that long at a time and she is just as happy to be home alone as she is with me. I feel that she loves me a lot but I don’t feel like I did with the borderline, who was lovebombing me and enmeshing with me-I at least always knew I was wanted. I felt desired. Of course it was never enough for her and she was insatiable.
Am I being insatiable? Am I expecting too much? I have no reference for normal. I am used to in all my relationships though a much higher degree of meshing our lives together in terms of hanging with friends and family, and spending more time together when we’re able to. I am used to feeling like I am more of a priority than the others in their life and I feel like that’s healthy and normal to an extent. But in this relationship I feel like I’m equal to all things to her. She’s just as happy with me or without me.
She’s also closed off in the bedroom. I felt like she didn’t want to have sex at all. The borderline was all over me-but she won’t touch me unless I initiate. She won’t hardly let me touch her and she keeps her clothes on. She doesn’t have sexual trauma or physical trauma. She says it’s all too vulnerable for her and she’s like this with everyone. So this is also making me feel disconnected and rejected.
Some parts of this just don’t feel healthy but I also don’t know what healthy looks like. I want more from this girl. I want a deep and intimate connected relationship-I’m not sure what’s normal and what’s not at this point. I feel like we should be doing more together. I only get to see her specific days and times that I have to schedule with her in advance. I feel like this is how I must’ve made my borderline ex feel…unwanted. Unspecial. Like I didn’t have that much time for her.
I want more and I’m unhappy. I’m unsure if I have fleas but I sure feel like my ex rn like I’m complaining about the same things. I stay as busy as I can with other stuff…am I expecting too much? Or is something wrong here? I feel like I have to work really hard to see her and I feel like she’s just as happy being away from me. She will miss me if we go a week without seeing each other but she doesn’t need nearly as much time together and talking as me. And idk if that’s normal or if something is wrong and she’s avoidant also

2023.03.31 17:45 EXPLODODOG I have a "date" tomorrow, April 1. Ideas for something funny?

Hi bros,
This is meant to be a light-hearted, fun post!
I have a "date" tomorrow with a FWB. We have a very casual and fun relationship and are quite comfortable around one another. We're keeping things as-is for the foreseeable future, so the "date" is more like hanging out with my bro than a step toward anything serious. He's taking me out to dinner, probably some music and drinks, then hopefully back to my place for the night.
I'm a pretty funny guy with a good sense of humor, but it's usually "in the moment" and not planned. Since tomorrow is April 1, though, I want to come up with some kind of fun prank. Nothing to humiliate him or anything like that... Just something clever for a good laugh.
Any ideas? Perhaps you remember a good one someone played on you once?
Could definitely involve the NSFW part of the night, too!
After writing this it seems kinda stupid, but I'm bored at work on Friday afternoon, so I'll just go with it, haha!

2023.03.31 17:45 fullmetallamps [Tournament] Respect Perona!

Going off my previous thread, I decided to do another Thriller Bark-based character for some underrated powerscaling. She was pretty formidable at the time of Thriller Bark, even if that means nothing currently.

Background Knowledge

Devil Fruit

Perona has a Paramecia Type, the Hollow Hollow Fruit, allowing her to produce and manipulate ghosts.

The widest part of my foot is 4.5”. I have short, wide ass feet and am struggling to find skates that fit. For normal shoes I wear a size and a half larger to accommodate for width.
I’ve tried Chaya Melroses and Sure grip fames. Both are too slender.
Please help!

2023.03.31 17:43 Necessary-Safe-2846 Hybrid-ish kart?

So I'll lay out the rough idea, if it will work; how? If not; please help if you can. Thanks in advance.
A generator (power needs unkown) 2 electric hub motors maybe 4 for bike or scooter? Controller? Inverter?
The idea is sort of a mini ripsaw tank with tank steering so I want to be able to place the motors easier around the bigger frame(modified John Deere gator) and to have true zero turn not skid steer. I want to use a gas generator for quicker refuel, extended range, and price compared to a comparable battery. And I don't want to use 2 gas motors because gear boxes would only offer skid steer and linkage for tank steering is a bit more challenging. And hydraulic would be too slow ( I'm hoping for close to 50mph)for the size of engine that would fit the frame.
If I'm dreaming, you know of a similar design, if my idea just needs some tweaking, or if you know what parts and power output the generator would need to be please let me know. Thank you

2023.03.31 17:42 Hellefiedboy Can I please have some caring words

My adoptive father, whom I've been trying to get along with (he pretty much completely ignored my needs after my mum died (adoptive mum)), just forgot that we had breakfast together today, same time every week, (in the morning on Friday) and went for a thing to do with other stuff, completely forgetting to tell me anything, he "tried" to make it up by saying let's do it tomorrow, or I can go with him to get breakfast at Timmy's (Tim Hortons, for all the non Canadians) and he'll drop me off at home after we get it, not eat together just get food together, and I said no because this was supposed to be something we did together, on every Friday, but I should've expected this because he doesn't really try that hard, to be a part of my life, unless he's "trying" to "help me" he doesn't try he just wants to do everything for me to prove he can be there, when I need him. But he really doesn't care that much, about me just his image. Like him trying to help me is him asking 50 times if I need help when I'm saying no every time because it's things I don't need help with ( I'm autistic, have adhd, dysgraphia, dyslexia, and some other things I'm forgetting again) like I'm pretty slow to doing things but, I always ask if I need help, but he's almost never home when I actually need help. If you have any spare kind words may I please have them, I just need someone to care about me right now.

2023.03.31 17:40 Sandbox123456 EDD and ID verification

I was told that this would take 7-10 days after the appt to determine eligibility but they are trying to extend it further. They also threw in the ID requirement at me, which is weird because they have my info and details. Why set up an appt if there is question about my identity and fraud? This shouldn’t take weeks and I’m already had the phone appt interview 13 days ago (which I was also told would be 7-10 days), but the ID verification is a precursor. More drag time and delays. Next week if I get more “2 to 3 to 4 weeks” I’m going to call my local representative. Sadly that’s one of the only ways to make sure the EDD gets it right and handles my claim. Friday 3/31 - EDD is closed due to Cesar Chavez Day. 🥳😝

2023.03.31 17:39 Necessary_Walrus1703 House by the Lake

I was looking at the bungalow that would be our home for the next 3 months. My wife Marci found this property on AirBnB and took a real liking to it.
Even with the recent renovations, the bungalow had this old-world charm to it. It was probably built many years ago and far removed from the buzz of city life.
This beautiful home was on a secure strip of vacant land adjacent to a small lake.
The closest neighbors were at least a mile away. If not for the constant chirping of birds, the eerie quietness of the pace would have gone unchallenged.
And yet, the thick canopy of trees and the scent of earthy soil immediately appealed to my senses.
Perhaps, this will be the perfect antidote to my writer's block. The local ambiance could actually help me in my work as a horror story writer.
The house had a large backyard packed with different kinds of trees. My 7-year-old daughter Stella shrieked excitedly when she saw an old swing and started running toward it.
Stella is the light of my life. Marcy and I had been childless even after 10 years of matrimony, and that was beginning to put stress on our marriage.
Marci grew up an orphan, and her unhappy childhood saw her run from one foster home to the next. She always felt she had so much love to give and wanted to have a large family.
So when Stella arrived, my little girl not only saved my marriage - but also helped us develop a deep bond as a family.
As I saw her going back and forth on the swing, my eyes kept returning to an old well in the far-end corner of the property. I began to walk towards it.
When I got there, I placed my hand on the wall of the well and slowly leaned forward to take a peak. It was dark, deep, and emanating some kind of odor.
A weird sensation began to run through me, and I could feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
I could feel some inexplicable force working its way toward me. I felt drawn inwards as I stared into a dark abyss.
Suddenly I heard a ' Thud' sound and snapped back to my senses. I turned back to see what the commotion was.
My daughter had fallen from the swing and began to cry. Her cries pierced through the air, which made the birds scatter.
Marci and I went running toward Stella and helped her get back up. She had scraped both her knees from the fall and was bleeding. We patched up the wound as best as possible with some first aid.
Stella was still sobbing, gulping small breaths of air, even as the bleeding had finally stopped. Then Marci quickly put her moon-shaped locket around her daughter's neck. It seemed to do the trick. The crying stopped, and she began to fidget with it.
The locket was the only remaining link to Marci's past. She would clutch at it in times of stress, happiness, or grief. And then rock back and forth, holding onto it while getting lost in her thoughts.
We decided to take Stella to a doctor as a precautionary measure. As I turned around, my heart skipped a beat when I saw an old man standing in front of us.
He was in his overalls and had a look of shock on his face as he stared at Stella transfixed. He kept looking at the locket around her neck.
Going by his appearance, I assumed he was the caretaker.
I walked up to him, quickly introduced ourselves, and asked if a medical facility was nearby.
"There is a local clinic two miles east of here. They should be able to help you," he said.
I thanked him, and we quickly got into the car. The caretaker still in shock kept staring at Stella until we were out of sight.
Once we got her treated at the hospital, we stopped by a driveway for dinner.
There were a lot of things that were going on in my mind -
A suspicious-looking caretaker.
A water well that gives weird vibes,
And a large house located in the middle of nowhere that is now beginning to look ominous! Something was really off!
Anyways, by the time we returned to the house, it was already late, and Stella had fallen asleep.
The caretaker was standing by the entrance. I could see he wanted to speak with me.
Well, I had some questions to ask him myself!
But we were all exhausted, and I just wanted to turn in for the night. I told him that we could talk tomorrow, and he reluctantly nodded.
I carried my girl inside and gently put her to bed.
Marci and I got to our room, and I finally lay down on the bed. I fell asleep immediately.
When I woke up, it was still dark, but I could hear a muffled sound coming from outside the room. I closed my eyes and hoped the noise would go away.
But it kept ringing in my ears and refused to die down.
I got off the bed, opened the door, and walked toward the living room. As I got closer, I could see a pale white figure near the foot of a staircase, hunched over, back turned toward me.
Fear began to grip me.
I realized the muffled sounds were actually from a woman sobbing. She then turned to face me, and I froze in my tracks. I was looking at a ghost.
Pearly white tears ran down her face as she sat there cradling the lifeless body of my little girl in her arms!!!
My eyes suddenly opened, and I sat up straight in my bed. Huge beads of sweat were running down my fac322e.
"Was I dreaming?"
I stumbled across the room to get to Stella. I ran through the corridor and opened the door to her room.
And there she was.
Safe and sound, sleeping peacefully - just like I had remembered the previous night.
I leaned against the door and heaved a huge sigh of relief.
And then, once again, the images from the dream ran through my head, this time in more vivid detail.
The pale white ghost sat by the steps; my dead daughter's head was resting on her knees, and she was rocking back and forth, weeping softly.
Her face though ashen white, looked vaguely familiar. And in her right hand, she was clutching a moon-shaped locket!
'Oh my God, Marci…'
In all that panic, I had completely forgotten to check in on her. I doubled back to our room, half hoping this was again a dream.
When I entered, my heart sank.
Marci was missing. I went to check in the bathroom; she wasn't there either.
Just as I was about to exit the room, I looked across the window and froze in complete fear. Marci was there out in the backyard, slowly walking towards the well.
And standing next to her was the ghost who had appeared in my dream!
The ghost gestured frantically at Marci, looking to gain her attention somehow. So that she could stop her in her tracks.
But Marci looked like she was in some sort of trance; she was utterly oblivious to her surroundings and continued to march forward.
I could not believe what was happening. My mind and body were completely paralyzed with shock and fear.
Then the ghost stood right before her to stop her from moving forward. She waved her arms desperately, signaling Marci to stop.
But Marci just passed through her like a mist of air. She let out a wail of desperation.
It was at this point our eyes locked into each other. The ghost was looking at me while I was still standing by the bedroom window - transfixed.
She was Marci's dead mother. I had no doubt. She pointed her finger at me and signaled me to come and save her daughter.
Marci had already reached the edge of the well.
I ran as fast as my legs could carry. By the time I got to the backyard, Marci had already climbed the well’s wall.
I debated whether to call out her name and forcefully yank her off the ledge.
Instead, I slowed down carefully as I got closer to the well. I didn't want to startle her, which could cause her to lose her footing.
When I got within earshot of her, I caught a glimpse of Marci's face. She looked like she was possessed.
I slowly whispered her name. "Marci….."
She could not hear me or feel my presence even though I was just a few feet away.
Her gaze was fixated downwards at the depths of whatever lay beneath that evil well.
I haven't yet had time to process my own experiences on what happened to me the previous day.
I could only imagine the hypnotic effect it would weave on Marci. She defintely has some familial connection to this place.
And then, to my horror, I saw her step forward when she moved her leg. I lunged at her, wrapped my arms around her waist, and quickly dragged her off that ledge with all my might.
We landed on the grassy floor with a loud thud. I had managed to intervene in just the nick of time. I hugged my wife tightly out of gratitude.
"Alex, where are we?"
My wife had come back to her senses.
"What are we doing here in the middle of the night?" she asked.
I suddenly remembered about the ghost and looked around for her. She was standing 5 feet away, looking at the two of us. I could sense the look of relief on her face as well.
"Are you related to Marci?" I asked her. She nodded her head.
"Whom are you talking to? What is going on?" asked Marci, bewildered and in a state of shock.
I pointed to her mother.
"What? I can only see a well. Can't see anything else?"
I realized I was the only one who could see the ghost. The ghost seemed to sense this too and looked crestfallen.
I took Marci back to our room and waited until she fell asleep. I had a tough time convincing her that all this was due to fatigue and sleeplessness.
When I got out of the room, I saw the ghost standing by the door.
"Are you her mother?" I asked directly. She nodded back, teary-eyed. It must be killing her that her own daughter is unable to see her. No pun intended.
She then gestured for me to follow her. She glided through the corridor to reach a bookshelf in the living room. She pointed towards a large brown-colored book. I found an old newspaper clipping in between one of the pages.
When I read through its contents, I felt sick to my stomach.
The clipping had a photo of the Givens family. I immediately recognized Marci, who was around 4 years old in the picture. She was sitting on her mom's lap, wearing the moon-shaped locket. Behind them was a burly-looking man with a thick mustache
Marci's mother's name was Emily, and she was married to Robert Givens. Robert was a wealthy banker but also an alcoholic. He used to regularly beat his wife.
Emily, trapped in an abusive loveless marriage, found solace in another man. And Marci was
born out of that affair. Emily kept this secret hidden, but Robert found out when Marci turned 6.
Just to spite Emily, he decided to throw Marci into the well. The ensuing altercation resulted in the deaths of both Robert and Emily.
The police, the next day, found both bodies in the well while Marci was lying unconscious on the floor nearby.
Marci was later admitted to an orphanage, where she slowly lost all memory of her family. Her only remaining link to her past was the locket.
I looked up at the ghost of Emily, myself feeling a choke full of emotion. She smiled back at me.
A thought then struck me.
I asked, "Who is Marci's real father?"
She pointed to a small building across the window. It was the caretaker's quarters!
I later learned that the caretaker first worked as a teacher in a nearby school during the time of the affair. When he learned of their deaths, he looked everywhere for Marci, hoping to be a part of her life.
But the trail had gone cold. I guess that is why he eventually worked as a caretaker in the same bungalow as some form of atonement.
The question in front of me is, what do I do with all this new information about Marci's old life?
Marci has finally found happiness after a long time. She lovingly embraced motherhood, and our little family could not be happier.
So how do I introduce her dead mother to her, who is now living as a ghost?
Whom Marci can't see, but I can!
Or, how do I explain to her about her father, who is why she grew up an orphan in the first place because he TRIED TO KILL HER!!
And when is it ok for me to reveal the caretaker - whom she met only yesterday - is the person who is actually her Real Dad?
Will all this help her heal?
Or will it unearth hidden traumas tucked away in the deepest, most remote parts of her brain?
So the question that is still going through my mind is …
"What…. do I…. do?!"

2023.03.31 17:39 Dismal-Jellyfish Inflation Alert! The Fed’s Preferred inflation metric dropped a little. However, PCE Price Index for services rose 5.7%. Remember, Nearly 2/3 of consumer spending goes into services! While Corporate Media will trumpet the decline in goods prices, inflation is RAGING and showing no signs of slowing.

Inflation Alert!

Before we get into the number, Governor Philip N. Jefferson's recent speech does a pretty good job level setting PCE price index for those wondering what it is:

Different Ways to Measure InflationThe two primary measures of the price level in the United States are the consumer price index, commonly referred to as the CPI, and the personal consumption expenditures price index, commonly referred to as the PCE price index. Positive changes in these indexes are recorded as inflation. Each inflation measure has both total (or headline) and core subindexes, which I will talk about later. The CPI and PCE price indexes are constructed in broadly similar ways, but there are important differences between them.1 Both indexes measure inflation using a specific basket of goods and services consumed by households. These baskets are similar but not identical across the two measures. Both measures also weight each item in their basket roughly in accordance with its expenditure share. That is, the more households spend on an item, like rent, the higher the weight it receives in the overall index. The weights are broadly similar across the two indexes, but, again, there are some important differences.
https://preview.redd.it/aagsfuti03ra1.png?width=962&format=png&auto=webp&s=e6724890bdf60a9c5138032220253f60d58b2bdb
Now, let's talk in more detail about the differences between the CPI and the PCE price indexes. First, the PCE price index has a broader scope than the CPI. The CPI is limited to expenditures that households pay out of pocket, while the PCE price index covers a broader set of goods and services as it seeks to cover prices for all consumer expenditures in the national income and product accounts (NIPA). For example, the PCE price index includes prices of the health services provided to households through Medicaid, while the CPI excludes these items.

Second, the PCE price index and the CPI use different weighting systems. The PCE price index, which is more comprehensive than the CPI, estimates expenditure shares using the national income and product accounts, while the CPI measures expenditure shares using a separate survey of households, the Consumer Expenditure Survey. This leads to some differences in expenditure weights that can at times be important. For example, the share of medical services is notably higher in the PCE price index (partly because the PCE price index includes more kinds of medical expenditures), and the share of housing services is noticeably smaller (because overall expenditures are larger in the PCE price index). As a result, when health-care services or housing services inflation behave differently than other prices, this can lead to differences in PCE versus CPI inflation.
Another difference in the weights is that the PCE price index uses time-varying weights, while the official CPI keeps weights fixed for a year. The PCE price index weights change to reflect changes in the goods consumers buy. For instance, at the start of the pandemic, the CPI was still giving the same weights to cruise ship and airline fares, even though no one was traveling. The time-varying weights in PCE also account for substitution behavior. Suppose the price of apples goes up and the price of oranges stays the same. Consumers are then likely to substitute apples with oranges. In contrast, the CPI does not capture substitution behavior because the basket of goods consumers purchase is updated only once a year (instead of every month) and reflects expenditure patterns prevailing two years ago. The substitution effects captured by the PCE price index is one reason why PCE inflation (black line) is, almost always, lower than CPI inflation (red line), as you can see:

Today's Report: The Fed’s Preferred Inflation Metric Dropped a Little. It’s Still High, especially with services:

https://www.bea.gov/news/2023/personal-income-and-outlays-february-2023
https://www.bea.gov/news/2023/personal-income-and-outlays-february-2023
The PCE index for services dropped from February BUT there is no indication services PCE cooling--only jumping in transitory steps:
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/DSERRG3M086SBEA
On a year-over-year basis, the PCE Price Index for services rose 5.7%. Look at that uptrend!
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/DSERRG3M086SBEA

Why does this matter?

Nearly 2/3 of consumer spending goes into services! While the media will trumpet the drop in the price of goods (will get to that in a moment), where the majority of folks actual money is spent, inflation is RAGING and showing no signs of slowing.

Goods prices are falling:

The PCE price index for durable goods – new and used vehicles, appliances, furniture, etc. – declined from January but was still up .2%. Notice all the jumping up and down? This is transitory at work:
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/DGDSRG3M086SBEA
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/DGDSRG3M086SBEA
Year-over-year, the PCE price index for goods has been getting knocked down by month-to-month declines.

So what is happening here?

Goods inflation is cooling, with some goods components dropping bigly, but services inflation is RAGING and not really slowing down. This has led to Core PCE stuck in the transitory doldrums.

Core PCE Stuck in the Transitory doldrums:

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/PCEPILFE
This is the type of inflation JPow hates to see--means interest rate raising is NOT done.
On a year-over-year basis, the core PCE price index rose 4.6% in part by the decline in durable goods inflation that is still out-powering the red-hot services inflation--remember this is supposed to be 2%...:
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/PCEPILFE#0

TLDRS:

PCE Price Index for services rose 5.7%. Remember, Nearly 2/3 of consumer spending goes into services! While Corporate Media will trumpet the decline in goods prices, inflation is RAGING and showing no signs of slowing.

2023.03.31 17:39 emho24 New build running really hot during Cinebench?

I've built my new pc with seemingly no issues until I run CineBench in conjunction with HWiNFO64 v7.42. Almost immediately the cpu temps spike to 100C, and I'm at a loss for what is going on.
Here is my parts build, there is no GPU at the moment: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DQtthk
Intel i7-13700k (not overclocked)
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 cpu cooler (this thing is huge)
be quiet! Silent Base 802 case (comes with 2 fans on the front of the case and one in the back)
memory is running at XMP profile

Pic of the HWInfo cpu temps while just sitting at Windows 11 desktop:
[Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/MEi0vTG.png)

Pic of the HWInfo cpu temps within seconds of Cinebench starting:[Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/3xE7ck6.png)

What I've checked:
- all fans are running (all case fans and the cpu cooler fans)
- the cpu cooler fans are facing the correct direction
- the thermal paste was applied correctly. I took down the pc again, thinking I'd remove and reapply the thermal paste. I did get a little too much the first time, there was excess paste that needed to be removed. After reapplying the correct amount and starting the Cinebench again, I get the exact same temps.

I'm at a loss for why this runs so hot during benchmarking. I havent tried checking the temps during gaming because at the moment I'm without a GPU.
Right now I've got the case panels off so there really shouldnt be any sort of issue with air flow.

Ideas?
