Climate change denier Rupert Murdoch just bought National Geographic, which gives grants to scientists - Boing Boing
By Xeni Jardin at 11:14 am Wed, Sep 9, 2015
The National Geographic magazine has been a nonprofit publication since inception in 1888, but that ends today. The long-running American publication becomes very much for-profit under a $725 million dollar deal announced today with 21st Century Fox, the entertainment company controlled by the family of Rupert Murdoch.
Murdoch is a notorious climate change denier, and his family's Fox media empire is the world's primary source of global warming misinformation. Which would be no big deal here, I guess, were it not for the fact that the National Geographic Society's mission includes giving grants to scientists.

Big Oil Tries To Slam Door On Cleaner Fuels In Oregon ThinkProgress
By Ari Phillips
on February 6, 2014 at 3:34 pm
The nascent Clean Fuels Program in Oregon, which once underway would cut the greenhouse gas emissions from Oregon’s transportation fuels by 10 percent over 10 years, is meeting with staunch pushback from the fossil fuel industry. Joined by other heavy fuel-users organized under the Oregonians for Sound Fuel Policy coalition, the opposition is fighting against measures designed to reduce the carbon content of the state’s fuel.
Transportation accounts for nearly 40 percent of Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions. In 2012, Oregonians spent more than $7.7 billion importing gas and diesel. The economic and environmental cost of this will continue to grow as conventional oil and gas sources deplete and more expensive and dirty sources like oil sands are brought online to replace them. According to the Oregon Environmental Council, the Clean Fuels Program could create thousands of in-state jobs and save over a billion dollars in fuel costs.
This idea does not sit well with the fossil fuel industry reaping the benefits of the status quo, and according to the Oregonian, the oil industry has more than doubled its lobbying expenditures over the last four years fighting this new law. The Oregonian found that the Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA) spent nearly $355,000 on lobbying expenditures in the first three quarters of 2013, the second-largest sum in the state and more than double what the association spent in all of 2009.
The WSPA is based in Sacramento, California and represents petroleum companies like BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and ConocoPhillips in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Climate change report Things are bad, and they're going to get worse - The Week
Nature's Nightmares March 31
Ice caps are melting, water is getting scarce in some places, fish are going extinct, and heat waves are becoming the norm. That's all bad enough, but scientists warn that the effects of climate change are only going to get worse unless greenhouse gas emissions are curbed.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations group, released a report on Monday that offers a sobering look at global warming and different scenarios that might play out on the changing planet, including violent conflicts over resources and mass migrations due to widespread pubic-health calamities.
"Throughout the 21st century, climate-change impacts are projected to slow down economic growth, make poverty reduction more difficult, further erode food security, and prolong existing and create new poverty traps, the latter particularly in urban areas and emerging hotspots of hunger," the report said.
On the more positive side, the U.N. panel found that more businesses and governments around the globe are drawing up plans to adapt to rising water levels, extreme weather, and other climate disruptions. "I think that dealing effectively with climate change is just going to be something that great nations do," says Christopher B. Field, co-chairman of the working group that wrote the paper. Climate denial in Texas classrooms Proposed textbooks get the science embarrassingly wrong - Salon_com
Tuesday, Sep 16, 2014 2:18 PM UTC
Students learning about global warming will be taught that things might "even out," among other lies
As the world grapples with the planet-size question of how far we can go, and how quickly, to prevent and prepare for the worst effects of climate change, schoolchildren in Texas could soon be debating this question: “Is Global Warming a Result of Human Activity?”
That’d be a fine way to teach students that yes, the scientific community overwhelmingly agrees that global warming is a result of human activity, and then to explain why. But a proposed sixth-grade textbook flagged by National Center for Science Education (NSCE) instead uses the question to introduce an excerpt from the climate-denying Heartland Institute’s fact-denying article, “Global Warming: Not a Crisis.” It reads, in part:
Scientists agree that Earth’s climate is changing. They do not agree on what is causing the change. Is it just another natural warming cycle like so many cycles that have occurred in the past? Scientists who support this position cite thousands of years’ worth of natural climatic change as evidence. Or is climate change anthropogenic—caused by human activity? Scientists who support this position cite the warming effect of rapidly increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases occur naturally, but they also result from the burning of fossil fuels. Which side’s evidence is more convincing?
The exercise, NCSE argues, isn’t just giving students inaccurate information; it’s also doing a terrible job of teaching them how to evaluate evidence. The Heartland passage goes on to claim that “many scientists” question the conclusions of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that warming is “very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations,” without, apparently, explaining that a) that isn’t true and b) an international panel of the world’s leading climate experts isn’t exactly comparable to a group that not only lacks resources like “hundreds of scientific experts and reviewers, as well as thousands of peer-reviewed articles,” but also deliberately spreads misinformation meant to sow dissent and confusion about the IPCC’s expert conclusions.

Climate Denier Jim Inhofe Says He Could Lead Senate's Top Environment Committee Next Year ThinkProgress
By Alex Leichenger on March 19, 2014 at 5:55 pm
If Republicans gain control of the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections, Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) believes that he will lead the Environment and Public Works Committee. Inhofe made the comments to 50 plant managers in Catoosa, Oklahoma, the Tulsa World reports.
Inhofe, who wrote a book called, The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future, served as chairman on the environmental committee for four years. David Vitter (R-LA) replaced him as the ranking GOP member on the committee chaired by Barbara Boxer (D-CA) for the 113th Congress. GOP rules limit members to six years of service as committee chairs, meaning that Inhofe could theoretically reclaim his position for another two years should Republicans win the Senate in the 2014 midterm elections.

Climate science is a hoax Big Oil, GOP, God say so - Paul B_ Farrell - MarketWatch
Paul B. Farrell Archives May 22, 2014, 10:35 a.m. EDT
Commentary: 30 million Americans dismiss all warnings of deadly disaster
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (MarketWatch) — Yes, climate science is a hoax. Why? No solution. The problem is obvious. But talk’s cheap. No solution? No consensus? No political will? Too much science. No action. Nothing. America’s lost its soul. Lost the can-do spirit that made it a great nation. Inspired me as a U.S. Marine. And the clock keeps ticking ....
Thirty million Americans just don’t trust scientists warning of a “95% certainty” humans cause global warming. But they do trust Big Oil, the GOP, God. They honestly believe climate science is a dangerous fear-mongering liberal conspiracy. Listen, we’ll explain:
Recently Florida Sen. Marco Rubio joined the deniers: “I think all science deserves skepticism.” And in a recent debate all four candidates in the GOP primary for North Carolina governor denied climate change was manmade, agreeing with the current governor, a former long-term Duke Power executive.
Yes, their party position is clear, mapped out by Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe in “The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future.” But in an effort to question Inhofe’s motivation, his ClimateProgress.org
reviewer noted that over the years Inhofe has received “$1,352,523 in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry, including $90,950 from Koch Industries.”
Also challenged, Inhofe’s reliance on divine guidance. Inhofe said “God’s still up there. The arrogance of people to think that we, human beings, would be able to change what He is doing in the climate is to me outrageous.” But before you dismiss Inhofe, or any other science deniers for their strong religious convictions, remember the great Christian King Canute of Denmark who sat on his throne at water’s edge, to prove the futility of commanding the tide to stop.
The clock’s ticking. Who can you trust? Big Oil? Or Lloyds of London?

Coal Company CEO Threatens To Sue EPA For 'Lying' About Climate Change ThinkProgress
By Emily Atkin
June 10, 2014 at 5:08 pm Updated: June 10, 2014 at 7:13 pm
Robert E. Murray, of Murray Energy Corp., speaks during a news conference Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007.
The owner of the largest independent coal producer in the U.S. is threatening to sue the Environmental Protection Agency over its new regulations on carbon emissions from existing coal plants, saying the agency has been lying about the existence of global warming, and that the earth is actually getting colder.
In an extended profile published last month, Murray Energy Corp. founder Robert Murray told WV Executive that the EPA’s claims that climate change exists violates the federal Data Quality Act, which requires agencies to rely on quality, objective information to inform its decisions.
“Under the act, they are obligated to tell the truth, and they are not telling the truth about global warming,” Murray reportedly said. “They are not telling hardly any truth about the science. The earth has actually cooled over the last 17 years, so under the Data Quality Act, they’ve actually been lying about so-called global warming.”
Murray added, “This lawsuit will force them to not just take data from the environmentalists and publish it, as they have been doing, but to review that data and make sure it’s accurate.”
Of course, the EPA does not just take data from environmentalists to inform its position on climate change. A comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed research shows a 97 percent consensus among scientists that global warming is real and primarily driven by humans. And the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change, a massive global effort to compile and analyze climate research by scientists and experts around the world, found that there is a 95 percent likelihood that human activities drove 74 percent of the observed global warming since 1950.

Company Responsible For West Virginia Chemical Spill Skips Congressional Hearing ThinkProgress
By Emily Atkin
on February 10, 2014 at 4:11 pm
Gary Southern, president of Freedom Industries, takes a sip of water at a press conference on the chemical spill.
Exactly one month and a day after 10,000 gallons of chemicals spilled into West Virginia’s water, members of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure committee on Monday traveled to the state’s capital city, ostensibly to ask state leaders the still-unanswered questions surrounding the leak. There are many.
Perhaps the most important party that could provide answers would have been Freedom Industries, the company whose chemical storage tanks leaked a coal-cleaning chemical called crude MCHM into the water. Company president Gary Southern had been invited to testify, but in the end, did not show up.
“I find that extremely telling,” said Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV). “Freedom Industries’ decision not to testify today compounds its gross misconduct, and is an absolute affront to every person impacted by its spill.”
Freedom Industries’ decision not to show up to a hearing that otherwise housed every party that should be held accountable for the spill (Representatives from West Virginia American Water, West Virginia’s Department of Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Chemical Safety Board showed up, to name a few) is depressingly typical, and a painful reminder of the company’s non-presence throughout the month-long ordeal.
“They’ve been basically out of the picture since day one of this crisis, even though they were the cause of the crisis,” Executive Director of West Virginia Citizen Action Gary Zuckett, told ClimateProgress, recalling the events of the week following the spill. “The first thing that [Freedom] did was file for bankruptcy. The second thing they did was open a new corporation to loan the first corporation money.”
Indeed, after being being criticized for failing to immediately report the chemical leak, and faced with lawsuits from those who had been harmed, Freedom filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The bankruptcy shielded it from lawsuits, and since then the company has been increasingly opaque — only breaking its silence to revise spill numbers (last week it said 10,000, not 7,500 gallons, had spilled) and admit that more than one chemical had actually spilled.

Company That Caused Historic Chemical Spill Leaks More Waste Into West Virginia Waters ThinkProgress

The company responsible for letting 10,000 gallons of a mysterious chemical seep into West Virginia’s water this past January experienced another spill at its site on Thursday, this time from an overflowing trench of potentially contaminated stormwater, according to state officials.
Inspectors from the state Department of Environmental Protection noticed water overflowing into the Elk River from a containment trench at Freedom Industries’ site in Kanawha County on Thursday night at 5 p.m — the same site that leaked into the river in January, poisoning the drinking water supply for approximately 300,000 people. A sump pump that was supposed to send overflow to a storage tank had stopped working, inspectors said.
As of early Friday, the overflow had stopped, and a spokesperson for West Virginia American Water assured that initial tests showed no detection of crude MCHM, the mysterious coal-cleaning chemical that spilled at the site on Jan. 9. The chemical has a distinct licorice smell, but state DEP inspectors said there were no odors reported coming from the site. WOWK reporter Jessie Shafer, who visited the site in the hours after the spill, said otherwise.
“No odors reported at site today by public, but we were there. We smelled it clearly,” she tweeted.
The new spill happened on the same day that West Virginia American Water announced that all 16 carbon filters at its water treatment plant had been replaced, showing no more trace amounts of crude MCHM lingering from the initial spill. Six months after the initial spill, many West Virginia residents were still not drinking their water for fear of continued contamination.
The company responsible for the contamination, Freedom Industries, is currently going through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy spurred by the events of the January spill. The bankruptcy shielded it from lawsuits, and since then the company has been increasingly opaque — essentially only breaking its silence to revise spill numbers and admit that more than one chemical had actually spilled.
Congressman Denies Manmade Climate Change, Calls It 'An Agenda-Driven Science' ThinkProgress

Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) addresses a town hall meeting in Gainesville, Florida.
GAINESVILLE, Florida — Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) readily admits he’s “not smart enough” to determine the roots of climate change. He is, however, able to rule out one possible cause: humans.
The freshman congressman’s remarks came in an interview with ThinkProgress Monday following a town hall meeting. Asked about the spate of extreme weather, including weeks of punishing drought, that has gripped parts of Florida in recent years, Yoho dismissed the idea that it could be a symptom of manmade climate change.
“I think it’s a natural occurrence,” the Tea Party-aligned lawmaker said.
When asked whether he even believes climate scientists, Yoho was disdainful, calling climate change “an agenda-driven science” that’s “not right.”
KEYES: Droughts and extreme weather have been on the rise here in Florida. Do you think that’s something that’s attributable to manmade climate change?
YOHO: No. I think it’s a natural occurrence. I think we need to be good stewards of the resources we have and we need to get better, which we have, through technology and innovation.
KEYES: Do you think scientists are right on climate change or are they off-base on it?
YOHO: I think there’s an agenda-driven science. I can read stuff that says that the information was skewed. It’s not right. I’m a guy that’s worked out in the weather since I was 16. I can tell there’s climate change. The cause? I’m not smart enough for that.
Yoho’s rejection of mainstream climate science, similar to the climate denial of many of his Republican House colleagues, had not been previously reported.
His obstinance on the issue could have disastrous consequences for Florida. In fact, A University of Florida study found that the rise in extreme weather caused by climate change could cost the state up to $345 billion by the end of the 21st century
Cory Gardner says Keystone XL pipeline would create thousands of jobs in Colorado PolitiFact
"We would create thousands of jobs in Colorado, if the Keystone Pipeline were to be built."
Cory Gardner on Monday, July 28th, 2014 in an interview on Univision Radio
President Barack Obama’sindefinite delay of the Keystone XL pipeline has become a wedge issue between Democrats and Republicans as the midterm election season heats up.
In the Colorado Senate race, Democratic Sen. Mark Udall recently voted against Congress fast-tracking the pipeline, but said the administration’s review process should continue. His likely Republican opponent, U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, has called for swift approval, insisting it would be an economic boon to the state.
In an interview on Univision Radio, a primarily Spanish-language station, Gardner accused Senate Democrats of holding up the pipeline to placate environmentalists in an election year.
"The Keystone Pipeline would create good-paying jobs," Gardner said. "Not only where the pipeline is being built, good-paying construction jobs, but manufacturing and service opportunities in Colorado along with the Keystone Pipeline. We would create thousands of jobs in Colorado, if the Keystone Pipeline were to be built."
The planned route for the pipeline, which would connect diluted oil sands from Western Canada to Nebraska and then Gulf Coast refineries, doesn’t go through Colorado. So we wondered if it was possible that "thousands" of jobs would be created by the pipeline there.
We asked Gardner’s staff for the source of his claim. Spokesman Alex Siciliano pointed us to the written testimony of Gary Mar, who represented Alberta, Canada, in Washington and spoke at a House Energy and Commerce committee hearing in February 2011.
Mar cites a 2009 study from the Canadian Energy Research Institute that estimates over 15 years "the development of Alberta’s oil sands will boost U.S. GDP by an average of $31 billion per year, creating over 624,000 jobs in the U.S."
We couldn’t find the original study, but a chart Mar appended to his testimony says Colorado would see 11,200 jobs between 2009 and 2025, about half of which would have come between 2011 and 2015.
The chart, however, looks at the economic impact of the entire Alberta oil sands on the United States, not just the Keystone XL pipeline. In a subsequent 2011 study, the Canadian Energy Research Institute claimed job growth as a result of the oil sands could reach 600,000 in the United States, but only if existing pipelines were expanded and other projects came to fruition.
A spokeswoman for the Canadian Energy Research Institute also said those numbers did not look at the economic benefits of the pipeline, but "only the benefits from upstream production of oil sands." Basically, it’s not measuring the benefit from the pipeline itself, rather the study estimates the effects of Canada being able to increase its capacity to produce oil.
The study Siciliano showed us is also from 2009. As TransCanada, the company building the pipeline, told us previously, "The project has changed considerably since then, including substantial route changes and a new presidential permit application." TransCanada has stopped touting its own study on the the economic benefits of the pipeline from from the same time period, which estimated about 20,000 manufacturing and construction jobs, and another 118,000 spin-off jobs.
Instead, in an email to PolitiFact this week, TransCanada pointed us to the State Department’s analysis of the project.
According to that study, the Keystone XL pipeline would directly create the equivalent of 16,100 jobs if the project took one year. If the job lasted two years, the equivalent of 8,050 people would be employed over the course of the project.
Of those jobs, 5,400 would be in states where the pipeline and support infrastructure will actually get built — Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas. The rest of those direct jobs would be created in other states.
In all, about 42,100 jobs would be created over the course of the project — 30,000 of which would be outside the aforementioned four states. This includes jobs created directly by the pipeline (like the construction work), indirectly (like jobs created as a result of goods and services purchased by construction crews) and induced (jobs created by workers spending their wages in the economy).
How many of those 30,000 temporary jobs would be in Colorado? It’s not clear from the State Department study, and a spokeswoman for the department said it wasn’t available.
Ian Goodman, who co-authored a Cornell University study of the pipeline, said it’s unlikely that Colorado’s chunk of those 30,000 jobs would reach the thousands. Though Colorado could see some benefits from being in a state proximate to the pipeline, it is not expected to be a major supplier to the construction.
"Most of these jobs would be in the states along the pipeline routing and most of the remainder would be in states heavily involved in the spin offs — pipeline supply chain and/or providing goods and services for Keystone XL workers," Goodman said. "Colorado is not likely to have a big roles in these spin-offs. So it is hard to see how Colorado could be getting thousands of jobs from Keystone XL."
Goodman also said TransCanada has already spent about one-third of the pipeline's budget on engineering, design, permitting, and equipment and materials already procured and manufactured. That means that some jobs and economic development from that part of the project have already been realized.
In a rosy scenario, Goodman estimated that at most 1,400 additional jobs could be created in Colorado, but more likely it will be less, perhaps closer to 500.
As we’ve noted in the past, too, almost all of these jobs are not permanent, as is often the case with construction projects. The State Department found the pipeline would create 35 permanent jobs and 15 temporary jobs once it went into operation.
Gardner said, "We would create thousands of jobs in Colorado, if the Keystone Pipeline were to be built." Gardner based that statement off an old study that measured the overall impact of the Alberta oil sands on the U.S. economy, not the Keystone XL pipeline specifically. The State Department study cited by the company building the pipeline estimates that the equivalent of 30,000 direct, indirect and induced temporary jobs will be created in states outside the pipeline’s projected route. However, it doesn’t specify how many of those would be created in Colorado.
We rate Gardner’s statement Mostly False.
Deforestation a problem in Oregon despite replanting, analysis says OregonLive_com
A clearcut in Curry County. A new analysis says Oregon has lost an estimated 522,000 acres of forest cover in state and private forests since 2000 because of overly aggressive logging. (Rob Davis/The Oregonian)
Deforestation isn't just happening in well-known global hotspots like Indonesia and Brazil's rainforest.
A new analysis says forests are also shrinking on state and private land in Western Oregon, where an estimated 522,000 acres of forest cover have disappeared since 2000.
That's an area six times larger than the city of Portland, equal to more than half of Oregon's designated state forests.
State law requires timber companies to replant after clear cutting. But seedlings aren't growing as fast as mature trees are being cut, the analysis found. (Read the analysis here.)
Two environmental groups, Oregon Wild and the Center for Sustainable Economy. studied 13 years of satellite imagery. They used Global Forest Watch data and a technique established by researchers to estimate forest losses around the world.
They compared timberland lost to cutting with areas that regained forest cover – a canopy covering 30 percent of the ground with trees at least 16 feet tall. They found the western part of the state lost an average of 34,797 acres of tree cover each year. (State and private timberland is heavily concentrated in Western Oregon.)
The groups say the findings point to the need for greater restrictions on clearcuts, including their size and where they're allowed. Some watersheds lost as much as 42 percent of their tree cover, the study found.
"At a time when we need forest cover the most to cool our streams and rivers and provide safe passage for migrating salmon, big timber companies in Oregon are going on a clearcut rampage to fuel exports of raw logs to foreign buyers," said John Talberth, president and senior economist at the Center for Sustainable Economy.
The findings contradict claims from the Oregon Department of Forestry, which says Oregon's forests are regrowing faster than they're cut.
Nick Hennemann, an ODF spokesman, didn't directly address the contradiction in a statement. He said the agency has used aerial imagery to track forest cover since the 1970s and has seen a decline because of land-use changes as forests have been cleared for residential development.
But development alone doesn't explain the deforestation found by the new analysis. When ODF, which regulates the timber industry, studied changes in forestland in 2011, it found just 23,200 acres of forest cover lost to development between 2000-2009, a small fraction of what the latest study detected.
Heath Curtiss, spokesman for the Oregon Forest Industries Council, an industry group, said Oregon had done a far better job than neighboring Washington in ensuring forests were not permanently lost to development.
"From a policy perspective, it seems the relevant issue is not the current state of forest cover, but rather, the risk of losing forestlands to other uses," he said.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Kate Brown declined comment, saying her office had not yet seen the analysis.
The study excluded forest loss from wildfires. It also excluded changes on federal lands, where timber harvests dropped sharply after the endangered species listing of the spotted owl.
