I understand HDR in photography: you take different pics with different exposure times, and then combine into a single pic grabbing from the short-exposure image for the bright zones and from the long-exposure image for the dark zones.
But I don't fully understand any of the definitions I have seen around of HDR in terms of video sources and monitors, especially when applied to OLEDs (my main TV is OLED, and it seems like it's expected to become more common).
There seems to be more bits per pixel, but I don't quite see what's the advantage of this, for two reasons.
1/ My understanding is that when playing a non-HDR source, the lowest value for red (or green or blue) in the source will be mapped to the lowest value of Red (blackest) the TV can produce in that subpixel (which I know in LCDs is not perfectly black, but in OLEDs is), and the highest value in the source will produce the brightest red the TV can produce. I don't quite see how HDR can change this, so as I understand this, the range should be the same, at least on OLED TVs.
2/ It seems to me that with the current state of the art with non-HDR sources (which I assume today it's 8 bits per colour), the eye cannot really tell apart two contiguous values in hue or saturation. Otherwise we would be seeing banding like we did in computers 25 years ago. So then again, I don't see the advantage here.
Some explanations seem to imply that some kinds of HDR can do something akin to modifying the global brightness or contrast of the whole panel dynamically. I can see how this may improve things in a LCD panel, but I don't quite understand how it can be any improvement in an OLED panel, where with or without HDR, which will already be mapping 0->0 and max->"max that I want the TV to give". Hello everyone! I just got my basenji puppy a month ago, and she is now 13 weeks old. I am trying to set up a routine because that has been my most challenging part. I would appreciate it if you could share your opinions on this routine.
For a little bit of context, I live in a high-rise building, I live alone and working from home currently but will switch to working from the office 3 days a week in May. So I am trying to get used to leaving her alone. She sleeps through the night with no issues, but during the day she naps so lightly, rejects having blankets over her crate to block her vision, and whines a lot if she sees me going into other rooms (experiencing FOMO, I assume?) unless she is occupied with something like a bully stick, but sometimes she is just too distracted to even focusing on that. I am a very organized person who thrives on schedules/plans/routines (so they say for puppies!) and could not continue any of the routines I had before getting my puppy. She is an angel, and I love her. I get the puppy blues from time to time but I am doing my best to focus on the progress we have together.

2023.03.30 14:17 Unique_Algae Strangest most vivid nightmare after taking melatonin
Let me preface this by saying that I took a pretty high dosage of melatonin for the first time in a couple of months. The first thing I remember is being in an operating room and a surgeon pulling and rearranging these like fiber wires coming out of my brain. It was insanely intricate and he was explaining the process of how each movement would bettefix problems with my brain function. After the operation for some reason I needed to be “reborn” (this is where shit gets weird) and I was literally put back inside my mother and birthed again. I think the reasoning behind this was to like reset my body. Well anyway, afterwards I feel really good and I’m having nice heart to heart moments with all of my family members and soon after it’s bedtime. (This next part is kind of irrelevant but I’ll tell it anyway) I wake up in the middle of the night on the couch, thinking I’m alone and start playing rocket league for some reason. (I think I’ve been playing a bit too much rocket league recently) and I notice that my aunt? is in the room and she is still sleeping. So I turn the console and tv off (forfeiting my comp game in the process, sadge) and head to bed. I’m sleeping well but then I start to have these tiny random hallucinations and like a migraine sort of feeling. I think I’m awake but I soon realize that I’m just dreaming so I calm down and just let the nightmares/hallucinations keep going hoping they’ll stop soon, but they keep getting worse. Then I see this huge grotesque fat sweaty man (hidden in the darkness) with a kitchen knife walk slowly into my room as he becomes clearer and clearer to see until he starts stabbing me repeatedly. I know it’s not real but I start to call for help as the head pains get worse. I soon realize that in “real life” I’m being rushed around by family members and I’m convulsing. I’m sort of whispering different phrases like help me, thank you, and I’m thinking I don’t deserve this kindness, why would they help ME? when suddenly I have this realization that I’m possessed and now I’m starting to violently fly around in the air while I’m convulsing. This is all happening while my consciousness is split between the “dream” and “reality”. This all reaches a sort of head after a minute, when it become too much for me and I wake up in real life. After waking up I had the realization that my dream subconscious interpreted myself as a devil like figure and that fat man as a god figure trying to purge me/the devil from the world. This is probably the scariest dream I’ve ever had. It felt so real and vivid (probably why I remember so much). I don’t usually have nightmares and when I do I’m really good at just realizing that I’m in a dream and that It’s all ok, so it’s kinda crazy how I was able to incept myself inside of a dream and scare the living shit out of myself like this. I don’t think I’ll be taking melatonin again for a while. Just reliving this is scaring me.
One last thing - if any of you have taken antidepressants you might know what serotonin/brain zaps are. Well this is the best way to describe what the head pains felt like in the dream. I’m also an atheist btw.
tl;dr - I undergo a strange surgery, to say the least. Realize I’ve become possessed after the surgery and shit goes crazy. I’m the devil and some murderous fat man is god.

Now let me start this by saying I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to computer parts but I decided to go all in with an RTX 4090 (https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/72hFf7/msi-suprim-x-geforce-rtx-4090-24-gb-video-card-geforce-rtx-4090-suprim-x-24g), now after some research I figured out that it required a "correct" power supply for it, but as for the motherboard, ill be honest, I have no clue what I should be looking for.

Pretty great communication, pretty great sex, pretty great mashup of hobbies. He's probably one of the greatest loves of my life. I almost love him as much as I love my cat!
The only problem is that I'm pregnant, and he doesn't want another child. So we need to part ways, because that's a pretty big wrench in this otherwise perfect dream relationship. (I decided to keep the baby knowing he didn't want another kid, he is supportive of my choice, he's not going to be forced to be involved with the child or anything like that).
But... how? All I want is to be around him. And he doesn't want me around less either. But I have to be around less to, yknow, break up. I practically live at his place. Whenever I'm not actively thinking about something else, my thoughts are idly on him. The idea of a clean break sounds horrifically emotionally debilitating but tapering down/deescalating our relationship over time until the baby comes sounds just as painful to me, albeit in a different way.
I don't regret deciding to keep this baby, but I do regret that I'll have to lose him for it .-. I dont know where to start with this. He's so precious to me.

My baby father and I ended things a week ago. He has moved out of my house, we didn’t end on the worse terms ever, but an eviction was involved which I had to finally put my foot down. I was very flexible regarding how much time he needed and even went as far as canceling the sheriffs to give him extra time to get his personal belongings out. Background info: went from living together in house and now he rents a room at a friend’s place. His obligated days are Sunday 1200-Tuesday 1200 one week and Monday 12- Tuesday 12 on alternative weeks. He texted me the other day and asked if he can just come by my house on his extended weekend so that it is “easier” for everyone. As far as minimized drop offs and pick ups and our child being in his natural space. Part of me feels like that’s a great idea but the other part of me wants to continue putting my foot down and exercising my boundaries with him. Thoughts?

My mom is 48 & started having really bad back problems around age 25 and that’s when she started taking things for pain & it was always just pills to help with the pain. Now I know she has some mental health issues & I think that’s a big part of the problem she has never gotten help with the mental health. She started meth about a year ago and over the summer I was able to get her to admit she was doing it but not until recently I figured out it was actually meth. She always called it speed I didn’t know what speed was I’m not familiar with drugs. I figured out what it was when I was cleaning and found it twice 2 days in a row. When I confronted her she said it was old from the summer but I knew she was lying. I told her the first step is being honest with people who love you I only want the best for her & I try to be sensitive when talking to her about it because she was get really mad and mean. I found it again last night I know it’s not old it’s recent. She’s been complaining about anxiety and she’ll have days where her entire body aches & she’ll have days she’s super on edge. Idk what to do I just wish she would be honest & stop being so comfortable with lying. How do I get through to her to at least be honest I’m not sure how to go about any of this anymore.

I'll try to keep it short (I'm going to fail)
1: Social Insurance/Security Numbers. What the fuck are those on a galactic scale. What would they be called and would they be a 1-1 thing? The Shadow Broker's Volus in ME1 (can't remember his name) mentions all the different economies in the galaxy, and how they are basically apart of a galactic world market/currency exchange system. If you're living on a planet that deals mostly in one species (say humans and Earth and their colonies) I'd imagine they probably deal in their own currency. But on the Citadel and any other melting pot places in the galaxy like the Omega Station, (where credits are obviously used) how the hell would this shit work?
2: Credits. Is that only the neutral currency in the galaxy or does every single economy use it now? When that Volus from ME1 talks about all the different economies, are the economies of colonies of one species differentiating from each other? Like how the dollar is worth more in the states then the dollar in Canada? Eden Primes credits aren't as much as Earth's or maybe they are more because of the whole Prothean gold mine. How much does it differentiate from species to species when if credits are taken into account? So many questions that don't matter too much but my dumb ass always thinks about it and I'm not even at all versed with economics.
3: Omni-tools. Seriously what the fuck are they. Wrist bands? Hand held devices that project them? There are supposed to be mini fabricators and in some cases mass effect field generators attached to them so how small are they actually? I don't think they can be implants. 5:How common is space travel? Like, maybe not owning your own ship capable of using mass relays, but traveling to other planets in your solar system or even going back and forth between systems? Is it only for the rich and those who's jobs require them to do so? Do the vast majority of people/species, remain on their planets/colonies and the citadel if they are born there? Can any jackass just jump on a shuttle?
6:Military Question. Honestly should have been number 1 but I forgot about it until just now. When Space Travel/combat is the most common thing in the galaxy, do all other forms of armed forces, Army, Air Force, etc, get absorbed into the Navy? I mean, if they are flying in space they can probably figure out flying in atmo (Joker being prime example) and I'd imagine with their tech most if not all of their ships can go into water just fine. Navy Seals and Marines may be in the navy and deal with water but they do a lot of land work to, or actually I think They have Sea and Land positions. Regardless it feels like having those different branches is unnecessary even if you are fighting boots on the ground.
7:Do Turians and Humans need to take special antibiotics to bang just like the Quarians do when they mate outside their species? Asking for a friend.
8:How common are cybernetic enhancements/prosthetics? Saren, Kai Leng, and Shepard after they die, seem to be the only ones that have these. Biotics have implants sure but I'm talking cyberpunk levels of Neural links and shit like that. Hell, half the time I wonder when Shepard holds their hand up to their ear to talk if they have one of those tiny communicators or just an internal communicator. I mean the omni-tool is supposed to be used for communication purposes as well but they don't always get pulled out for making a call.
9:I'm forgetting the rest and this is definitely not short. I need to know though if asari are hermaphrodites or just females capable of mating with everything.
10:Virus, colds, disease, cancer. Is any of this cross contamination a high risk (obvs with quarians it is I'm not asking for them) Like when you travel from earth to another planet or the citadel do you need to get space malaria shots? Not diving into this one this has been long enough and I need to sleep.

1: Social Insurance/Security Numbers. What the fuck are those on a galactic scale. What would they be called and would they be a 1-1 thing? The Shadow Broker's Volus in ME1 (can't remember his name) mentions all the different economies in the galaxy, and how they are basically apart of a galactic world market/currency exchange system. If you're living on a planet that deals mostly in one species (say humans and Earth and their colonies) I'd imagine they probably deal in their own currency. But on the Citadel and any other melting pot places in the galaxy like the Omega Station, (where credits are obviously used) how the hell would this shit work?
2: Credits. Is that only the neutral currency in the galaxy or does every single economy use it now? When that Volus from ME1 talks about all the different economies, are the economies of colonies of one species differentiating from each other? Like how the dollar is worth more in the states then the dollar in Canada? Eden Primes credits aren't as much as Earth's or maybe they are more because of the whole Prothean gold mine. How much does it differentiate from species to species when if credits are taken into account? So many questions that don't matter too much but my dumb ass always thinks about it and I'm not even at all versed with economics.
3: Omni-tools. Seriously what the fuck are they. Wrist bands? Hand held devices that project them? There are supposed to be mini fabricators and in some cases mass effect field generators attached to them so how small are they actually? I don't think they can be implants. I was reading a comic once and found it to be immensely boring but I couldn’t quite place my finger on why. The story seemed to have everything in place for a thrilling adventure. Dire and lasting consequences for the characters and stakes that kept rising and rising to a fever pitch. It wasn’t until I compared this comic to my all time favorite comic (Castle Swimmer) that I figured out what the issue was. I realized that I didn’t care about the characters at all and found them to be bland and utterly uninteresting.
The part where I get confused is trying to figure out what sets the characters of Castle Swimmer apart from this bland cast of characters that I could care less about.
What makes a character special? I want to know how to make my readers fall in love with my characters and care about what happens to them. I want their palms to sweat when my characters are in danger or fighting a battle, hoping they make it out alive. Does anyone have any advice?
