My experience with Kingdom Hearts 1 - Some simple thoughts of a clear mind

2023.03.22 06:09 RRHN711 My experience with Kingdom Hearts 1 - Some simple thoughts of a clear mind

Hello, everybody! Nice to see you all again.
You might not remember me, but i was the guy who 4 months ago posted this text about being playing Kingdom Hearts 1 for the first time and after 4 months i finally finished and wanted to share some thoughts.
Before everything, i just wanted to say that if this kind of post is not allowed i will delete it, just need a mod to talk to me. Also
THERE WILL BE SPOILERS
-

-
First of all, it's been 4 months but obviously i didn't played 4 months straighted, i played for like 40 hours. I stopped for some time to play another game
So...i loved it. This game was fantastic. It's hard to put how i'm feeling now in words, it's been just 1 hour since i beat it
The worlds are beautiful. The story was intriguing and had twists i was not expecting. I was not expecting for Maleficent to not be the final boss. I was not expecting for Ansem to be the bad guy, i thought he was going to be an ally, and i pictured him more like an old man, not someone so young.
And what a fight he was, the hardest boss in the entire game for me. His final form almost got me
I was out of itens and just one more hit would kill Sora. Donald had fallen and Goofy was still fighting while i was dodging the attacks waiting for the right time. When Goofy was defeated, i decided to go for it, it was all or nothing. And when everything seemed to be lost i gave the final blow and defeated him
The final cutscene felt deserved. It was beautiful. I was watching with a straight face, thinking of everything i went through, all the times i died, all the worlds i've explored and all the characters i've met. I liked them more than i thought i would. I was tired, but satisfied
When Sora and Kairi were separated and Simple and Clean started to play, my eyes widened for less than 1 second. And i started to cry. This is one of the only pieces of media to every make me cry along with The Little Prince, Klaus (the 2019 movie) and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
I'm 100% going to play the other games, and i will start Chain of Memories tomorrow. I don't care how long it takes, i'm going to play up until KH3. I have so many questions. I'm seeing this through to the end.
Sorry if this post is relatively short, i'm still a bit dizzy from the ending and i'm very, very tired. Thank you for reading, and as they say on the Earthbound fandom:
"No crying until the end"

P.S.: During the journey i've also made a ranking with all the worlds. I also gave then 1-5 stars depending on how much i enjoyed it. 1 star is bad, 3 stars is average and 5 stars is the absolute best:
1- Hollow Bastion (5 stars)
2- Deep Jungle (5 stars)
3- Halloween Town (5 stars)
4- Olympus Coliseum (5 stars)
5- Destiny Islands (5 stars)
6- Traverse Town (4 stars)
7- Neverland (4 stars)
8- Wonderland (4 stars)
9- End of the World (3 stars)
10- Agrabah (3 stars)
11- 100 Acre Wood (2 stars)
12- Dive to the Heart (2 stars)
13- Monstro (1 star)
14- Atlantica (1 star)

2023.03.22 04:50 jfrptlan [M4F] Romance, Worldbuilding, and Character Development. A Power Couple Against the World

Sure the Lone Wolf trope is fun, but do you know what's more fun? The Unstoppable Duo! I am searching for a partner to be the Yin to my Yang, the peanut butter to my jelly (we can debate who is what later), and I am looking to embark on a story creating journey that fulfills this. But what exactly do I mean?
My character, Markus, is the prince of a small kingdom in the north, Eratia, and second in line for the thrown. Eratia is known for its rich mines and other natural resources, however, a lack of easily settleable land, harsh winters, and generally poor soil kept the rich nation from becoming too powerful on the grand stage. Your character (YC) is a princess from Aestas is a much larger and more powerful kingdom to the south. Located in the center of the continent in a mix of rolling hills and plains, the area provided rich farmland and benefited from being a constant trade hub. YC is second in line to the throne of Aestas, but since she has an older sister she has been little more than an afterthought in the minds of her parents since she was a child.
I know I know, prince and princess is boring, but hang on I'm getting there!
After a 5 year war, Aestas defeats Eratia and semi-absorbs them into its growing empire. Markus is publicly blamed for the loss by his father the king due to Markus' position in the military despite the fact that forces outside of his control were to blame. YC is used as a pawn in the truce as an arranged marriage is settled upon by both kings to join their houses and make public opinion soar.
Here is where the fun begins! After a (relatively) straight forward enemies-to-lovers/arranged marriage relationship blooms, the two set out on a path to take revenge on those in power who sold them out and to take over the throne of Aestas. This will be a path of action, political intrigue, espionage, romance, and more. But at the center of it all is an unwavering power couple, Markus and YC.
As a few more small notes on my idea: Please bring your creative brain. Ideas on how to improve the concept? Yes please! Paths for twists, turns, and surprises? Encouraged! Simply have a better name for the kingdoms? Great! Also, I'm imaging this set in a made up world, one that has forms of technology. Although the setting is socially and politically medieval, the idea of sticking with dirty castles, unshoweritg people, and disease isn't very appealing to me. I'm considering maybe including some kind of superpower system? We would have to chat more. Speaking of you, I do have some requirements:
  1. I am looking for an advanced role-player. I won't count your lines like a teacher, but I am shooting for near-novella levels.
  2. Be creative and open to world building, storytelling, character development etc.
  3. Please be responsive. I understand life gets in the way, sometimes I have days were I simply can't respond, but if this isn't what you're looking for please tell me. This is a prompt I've thought about for a long while and if you're not right for it that is alright, just let me know.
  4. I primarily use discord and would appreciate the same.
  5. I frequently use OOC not just to discuss the role-play, but maybe just to be friendly. This isn't necessarily a requirement, but definitely something to point out.
Below is a small writing sample loosely based on this idea. This particular scene does not have to actually occur or be included:
Markus stood above a steel table upon with a holo-map lay strewn across. Section G7 kept flickering and he made a mental note to tear the tech officer a new one for letting him use a damaged map. His rough hands remained planted on the table edge in front of him as he leaned forward to examine the map. Those barbarians didn't have much in the way of tactics, but they sure made up for it in ferocity and in numbers. Markus ran a set of rough fingers through his long blonde hair. He was sure he needed a shower and a shave, but this wasn't the time for such niceties.
Markus adjusted his feet on the dirt floor. It was made of clay, terrible for farming and even worse to set up camp in. His eyes glanced up and took in the command tent for what felt like the thousandth time that hour. The prefabricated structure was usually teaming with life, but Markus had dismissed his men earlier. They needed rest and he needed time to think. The lifeless monitors rested on a pale red Home Screen with a spinning black logo in the middle, the seal of Aestas. It plastered an eery red glow on the tent and clashed heavily with the unnatural blue light arising from the holo-map.
Markus' mind needed to be on troop movements, supply lines, possible exit strategies, and more, but truthfully he was unable to concentrate. Also for what felt like the thousandth time, Markus reached in his pocket and pulled out a folded photograph. The edges of the film had started to curl from being carried around, but he didn't care. He opened the photo and a tired smile grew across his face. There were plenty of portraits and photoshoots of the princess around and she looked stunning in all of them, but this was his favorite image of her. It was an off-guard photo. She had been looking out over their balcony with the sunrise on her skin when she turned to face him and he had snapped the picture. Despite his overwhelming love for her a pit of worry still sat in his stomach. Her scheme was supposed to be set in motion today and he could only hope it went off without a hitch.
Okay! That's all! If you made it this far I hope you're interested and I look forward to seeing you soon!

2023.03.21 22:21 Hans_vonPoopenfarten [EVENT] Peasant Space Marines

January, 1509,
The brothers Belisario and Gherardo Appiano di Piombino were brought before the Praetor-un-Buerkaptein Reimer von Wiemerstedt and the Forty-eight Regents to report on the training of the peasant levies. He expected to be disappointed, as the men of Dithmarschen became soft drunkards after the victory of Hemmingstedt.
January-February: (32)
The brothers were expected to train war hedgehogs. This was not successful whatsoever. Hedgehogs have no military use except as projectiles. The horde of 218 hedgehogs scattered away into the swamps of Dithmarschen soon after being brought to the training fields. A meager 20 of them were captured, with the rest returning to ferality. Time will tell if this is inconsequential, or the first of many ecological disasters leading to Dithmarschen’s collapse.
March-April: (81)
As the ground and dikes began to thaw, the peasants were able to give a small-scale demonstration of their tactics at Hemmingstedt. Spearmen armed with brooms pushed Black Guardsmen armed with sticks down the small hill into puddles. Archers threw stones from above, and brave foot soldiers wielded wooden utensils against unarmed foes. The brothers gave only mild critiques to their strategies, knowing well that they were able to beat a superior host with the tactics. They insisted pikes would’ve been more useful against the enemy, as to keep greater distance between them than with just spears. They also promoted the usage of crossbows and bows for the peasants, given that only a few of them had skill with (or even access to) arquebuses.
May-June: (100)
The peasants were drilled in a reenactment of the Battle of Fornovo. Reimer von Wiemerstedt led the French squadron while Dodo Būt led the Venetian squadron. Artillery was mimicked by the peasants’ wives throwing stones at them from banks of the Miele. The Venetians sent their northern detachment across the river, and Dodo personally led the cavalry charge of a dozen ponies. Instead of sacking the French loot train, Dodo’s cavalry harassed the southern flank of the French artillery position. Upon the arrival of the Venetian footsoldiers, the French northern detachment was forced to route into the western woods, or be beaten with broomsticks and vaulting poles. As soon as the main Venetian host was set to cross the river, Dodo’s cavalry and smaller detachment continued westwards to sack the loot train. In his eyes, more hands made less work, even if this work was ripping old chicken feed out of barrels. A small troop of the main French host made its way northwestward to the loot train, signaling for the routed Frenchmen to return from the woods to charge the Venetians. They quickly surrounded Dodo’s party, and clobbered them with their various tools. The main Venetian detachment, soaked in river water, engaged the French host until they could clearly see Dodo being thrown off of his gallant steed, giving them a good enough reason to flee. Von Wiemerstedt ordered his Frenchmen to chase down the fleeing Venetians, and give them a proper beating for not playing the game correctly. The French were still victorious at the Battle of Fornovo, and each participant became much more familiar with the tactics and strategies used by the armies of greater kingdoms.
July-August: (71)
The brothers gave demonstrations of armored combat, something that the average Dithmarschen peasant could never dream of participating in. Those who were able to fit in their armor were allowed to fight in it, albeit with wooden sparring weapons. Some, like the Praetor-un-Buerkaptein, excelled at armored combat, even defeating both Appiano brothers! The majority, like Hans Hansen or Pier Pigfucker, could fight in the armor, but quickly grew tired. They were not as great as the professional mercenaries they defeated 7 years prior, but could complete whichever drills they were assigned.
September-October: (47)
The brothers spent the harvest season trying to educate the peasants on the battles of antiquity. The peasants didn’t care, they were too busy harvesting their crops! They had already lived through the Battle of Thermopylae, and didn’t care to learn about Issus, Canae, or Tours. The officers were interested in learning about the battles, but seemed not to absorb any of the information.
November-December: (86)
Over the winter months, the peasants practiced winter combat. They marched through thigh-high snow, fought on ice, and built snow forts that may have been able to protect against crossbow bolts. They slowly became masters of winter warfare, a skill they would need to know if they were to fight the Danes and Norwegians in their frozen hellscapes of homelands, a reality they feared may soon come true.
1508
During the second year of training, the brothers developed a table-top tactics game for the officers and regents to practice with in their free time. Small wooden figurines of soldiers, archers, cavaliers, and artillery were placed on a battlefield map, with terrain and buildings represented by certain markings or wooden carvings. Each figurine was a part of a greater unit, and each unit was assigned various rankings to better represent their fighting attributes, like offensive shock, routing speed, or rounds per minute (for ranged units). These units and their rankings were printed into long and byzantine rulebooks. Players would select their combination of units, often selecting exclusively units from just one kingdom or nation, and have them fight against other armies. Dice were rolled to represent the randomness of engagements, with the rankings from the rulebooks modifying the dice rolls either positively or negatively. This goofy mess of a game was named Warhammer, and quickly took Dithmarschen by storm. Taverns held designated tables and figurines for residents to play Warhammer, and literate farmers could earn extra coin by serving as referees and rulebook readers for the players. Praetor-un-Buerkaptein Reimer von Wiemerstedt and local brewer Kurt Nenne fostered a friendly rivalry over Warhammer, with Reimer often playing as the Muscovites and Nenne playing exclusively as the Florentines. Through Warhammer, most Dithmarschers became experienced in battlefield tactics and military strategy, albeit in a fictional and turn-based setting. They were able to critically think about their opponents strengths and weaknesses, and exploit their weaknesses. Dithmarschen became a nation of armchair generals.
Seeing that the levies of Dithmarschen were no longer soft drunkards, but strong, quick-witted soldiers, von Wiemerstedt and the Regents decided that the brothers of Piombino’s efforts were worthwhile and worthy of full payment. They received 2,500 florins, were thanked with a small feast in Heide, and sent on their way back home.
[M: Dithmarschen pays 2,500f (mil) to Piombino. Some has already been paid.]

2023.03.21 21:43 Fun-Plane-3299 Sad Day…

My 2003 Toyota Highlander (280K Miles) has been slowly getting ready to die the last few months. Engine resembles a diesel tank more than a SUV. Finally got to a point where the Take5 auto folks wouldn’t touch my car for a basic oil change because they were afraid something would happen and they’d be responsible for the damages. Tire kingdom also wouldn’t touch it for similar reasons. I ended up taking it to a Toyota dealership — thinking they’ll have the resources to figure out what’s wrong with it. Mechanics recommended $9K+ worth of service that needed to be done just to keep the thing running. I feel like this is the end and I’m sad. A lot of great memories. My first car I ever had.

2023.03.21 19:22 ribbeats new to kpop, recommend me stuff!

hello! just very recently i finally got into kpop (recently as in just 3 months ago~), and im really needing some new recs!
so far, ive been listening only to stray kids- something about their music really hits, the loudness and the lyrics of it- especially a fan of their older stuff- maze of memories, side effects, all of 3racha discography(esp runners high), their kingdom cover of "ill be your man" is one of my top5 godly tier, other likes being all of oddinary(charmefreeze faves) and noeasy(sorry i love you, silent cry, red lights, cheese, domino faves), volcano, etc.
ive tried looking into other groups, girl groups(twice, ive, blackpink, etc none that ive gone to really caught my attention or maybe i didnt listen to the right songs), boy groups(xdinary heroes, bts, exo, 17, etc, same thing)- and i havent managed to find anything that hit like they do besides block b(nillili mambo, very good and nalina being faves), f(x)'s red light, some of tablo's stuff(esp BAD ft jinsil), and ateez's halazia (guerrila was also surprisingly nice, really didnt expect the rocky from them, but didnt do for me what i hoped it would 😔)- really need more things to listen so i dont get tired of what i like now :(
im unsure really what my favorite sort of genre is, but im guessing just random loud stuff/rocky stuff? i listen to a lot of vocaloid (esp iyowa and yuyoyuppe where its quite loud as well) if that helps any with recs
also, of the groups ive mentioned above(besides skz), ive only listened to very few songs that were on the top of the youtube page when searching for them, so even if i listed them as one that didnt do it for me feel free to rec their stuff if you think it might fit! <3
sorry for the messy/all over the place post, but thanks in advance for the help! 💞💞

Introduction

K-dramas are meant first (or primarily) for Korean viewers and only second for international viewers. Just like in other dramas, the historical, cultural, and political references in “Mr. Queen” are well known to the Korean viewers. On the other hand, we, the international viewers, must dig deep into Wikipedia and other sources (or post questions in forums like this) so that we can understand what’s going on.

For example, some people who have seen “Mr. Queen” said that they couldn’t stand the court politics or the infighting between the different factions because the drama didn’t provide any context. Well, the court politics and the infighting between the different factions happened between the Andong Kim and Poonyang Jo clans, which are well known to Korean viewers and thus, no context was necessary.

When “Saimdang” was first broadcast in 2017, I joined the on-air discussions of the drama in the Soompi Forums. In that forum, whenever I had questions about the drama, I had two go-to persons: for questions about Korean language, culture, and history, I asked “gerrytan8063”; whenever I had questions about Chinese characters used in the drama, I asked “liddi.” I haven’t joined the Soompi discussions after I found reddit, and so I don’t know if “gerrytan8063” and “liddi” are still active there.

Where can we turn to when we, as international viewers, have questions about Korean language, culture, and history as they relate to K-dramas? There’s Quora, of course; “bodashiri” in Tumblr has a form in his website where he/she says, “Ask me anything.” Also, since 2012, the “Annals of the Joseon Dynasty” is being translated in English, with the project supposed to be finished in 2034. Certain portions of the English translation are available online, as you can read in “Globalization of Korean history” from the official Korean government history website.

Oh, maybe we can also use ChatGPT in learning about the historical, cultural, and language issues that we come across in K-dramas.

The very first K-drama that I watched in full was the 2014 blockbuster “My Love From The Star” starring Jun Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun. In this drama, I first heard the term “Joseon Dynasty” and learned how the dynasty heavily influenced what Korea is today.

Before “My Love From The Star” however, I had seen one or two brief scenes from the 2003 blockbuster drama “A Jewel in the Palace” (aka “Dae Jang Geum”) starring Lee Young-ae. Sometime in 2005 or 2006, “A Jewel in the Palace” began sweeping the Philippines. Every night at around 6 o’clock, the streets would become empty, with people shouting to each other as they rush to their homes, “Jang Geum na!” (in English, “It’s Jang Geum time!”). Since that time, “A Jewel in the Palace” has been broadcast in the Philippines five times; that’s how popular it is among Filipinos.

I watched “A Jewel in the Palace” in its entirety only in 2015. Since then, I’ve seen each episode around four or five times already; whenever I feel depressed, I rewatch Ep. 6 where Jang Geum was exiled to the herb garden outside the palace. Needless to say, Lee Young-ae is the love of my life. Next to Lee Young-ae, I love Han Hyo-joo (“Dong Yi”), Han Hye-jin (“Jumong”), Han Ga-in (“The Moon That Embraces The Sun”), Moon Chae-won (“The Princess’s Man”), Park Shin Hye (“The Royal Tailor”), Shin Se-kyung (“Six Flying Dragons”), Park Ha-sun (Queen In-hyun in “Dong Yi”), Nana (“Into The Ring”), and Go Ara (“The Joseon Magician”), in that order.

A. The historical figures who were fictionalized in this drama; lawsuit filed by descendants of a historical figure against “The Princess’s Man” (Soompi); the rivalry between the Andong Kim and Poonyang Jo clans and “sedo politics” (royal in-law politics)

The main characters in “Mr. Queen” are So-yong (Queen Cheorin), played by Shin Hye-sun, and King Cheoljong, played by Kim Jung-hyun. Some of the secondary characters are Queen Sunwon (Grand Queen Dowager) of the Andong Kim clan and Queen Shinjeong (Queen Dowager) of the Poongyang Jo clan.

“Mr. Queen” is fictional, with the following genres: historical, comedy, time travel, and body swap. But its characters and background events are inspired by historical figures and events. For example, the lead character (King Cheoljong) and his background facts — growing up destitute on Ganghwa Island, puppet of the Andong Kim clan, relatives persecuted as Catholics, etc. — are all based on history. Also, the conflict between the Andong Kim clan and Poonyang Jo clan is historical.

King Cheoljong in “Mr. Queen” is a highly fictionalized character that’s different from the historical King Cheoljong. The drama portrays him to be secretly plotting to establish himself as a strong ruler against two warring political factions — the Andong Kim clan (led by Grand Dowager Queen Sunwon) and the Pungyang Jo clan (led by Dowager Queen Sinjeong).

A-1. Historical figures who were fictionalized in “Mr. Queen”:

(1) King Cheoljong

The 25th king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea (25 July 1831 – 16 January 1864), he was a second cousin to the heirless Heonjong of Joseon, as well as a great-great grandson of Yeongjo of Joseon. He was chosen to become King by Senior Dowager Queen Sunwon (King Sunjo’s widow) and the powerful Andong Kim clan because he was illiterate and thus easy to manipulate.
Cheoljong ascended to the throne in 1849 at the age of 19 after King Heonjong died without an heir. As a distant relative of both the recently deceased king as well as a descendant of King Yeongjo, Cheoljong was selected for adoption by the Senior Dowager Queen Sunwon (King Sunjo’s widow) at the time and to allow him to ascend to the throne. The future Cheoljong was found on Ganghwa Island where his family had been in exile since the Catholic Persecution of 1801.
When the envoys (dispatched in order to seek for the future king) arrived on Ganghwa Island, they found the exiled remnants of the royal clan barely surviving in wretched poverty, and in the midst of that degradation, 19-year old Yi Won-beom was proclaimed King. Though from the start of the Joseon Dynasty Korean kings had given top priority to the education of their sons, Cheoljong could not even read a single word on the notice delivering congratulations to him on his elevation to the royal throne.
As part of the Andong Kim’s manipulation of Cheoljong, in 1851, the clan married Cheoljong to Kim Mun-geun’s daughter, known posthumously as Queen Cheor’in.
Cheoljong died at the age of 32 in 16 January 1864 (by suspected foul play by the Andong Kim clan, the same clan which made him king), without any surviving male heirs. Once again, it became necessary to search far back in the Yi lineage to find a candidate for the throne.

The only surviving [cropped] image of King Cheoljong
(2) Queen Cheorin: wife of King Cheoljong, also known as Queen Dowager Myeongsun (27 April 1837 – 12 June 1878).

Queen Cheorin belonged to the Andong Kim clan.

(3) Grand Dowager Queen: Queen Sunwon (8 June 1789 – 21 September 1857), also known as Queen Dowager Myeonggyeong, was the spouse of Sunjo of Joseon. She served as regent of Korea from 1834–1841 and from 1849–1852.

(4) Queen Dowager: Queen Shinjeong, also known as Queen Dowager Hyoyu, (21 January 1809 - 4 June 1890) was the only wife of Crown Prince Hyomyeong of Joseon and mother of King Heonjong of Joseon.

Queen Shinjeong belonged to the Poonyang Jo clan.

A-2. “Mr. Queen” was criticized for distorting history. Among the things that was criticized is the drama’s portrayal of the Queen Dowager (Queen Shinjeong in history) as being heavily involved in shamanism.

From “Descendants of Sin Sook-joo sue The Princess’ Man” (Soompi): “According to the Seoul District Court, 108 descendants of old Sin claimed a damage suit of KRW 3 billion [2.2 million US dollars] against the broadcasting company and the writer for negatively distorting the image of their ancestor Sin Sook-joo from the Chosun era.”

This lawsuit was filed in 2011; I couldn’t find any information about what happened to this lawsuit.

A-3: Andong Kim clan, Poongyang Jo clan, and “sedo politics” (royal in-law politics)

From New World Encyclopedia:

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Andong Kim clan, who had provided the Joseon state with several queens, had seized power almost everywhere in Korea. The social stagnation that resulted was a breeding ground for unrest. Corruption and embezzlement from the treasury and its inevitable exploitation were taken to extreme levels, and reached staggering proportions. One rebellion after another was accompanied by natural disasters.
The only aim of the Andong Kim clan was the preservation of their influence. Their fierce campaign to dominate the royal house had led to a situation in which almost all of the representatives of the royal family fled from Seoul. When the royal family produced intelligent and appropriate candidates for the accession, they were either accused of treason and executed or sent into exile, so when Heonjong died, leaving no son, no acceptable candidate could be found to succeed to the throne.

From “Exactly how much power did the Andong Kim Clan have in the Joseon court? How did they attain such power?” (Quora, by Michael L. Best) :

“How did the Andong Kim clan attain power? By intermarrying with the royal family, enthroning young and easy to control men as king, purging political rivals, and, very likely, killing off any king when they begin to threaten their power.”
“After Queen Jeongsun stepped down [in 1805 as regent of King Sunjo], Queen Sunwon’s father, Kim Jo-soon, began to make his move. Kim Jo-soon, who at that time was already of high rank within the royal court, began to purge all his political rivals to help secure the position of his family and political faction. At the same time corruption in the civil service examination increased, likely in the form of bribes to the Kim clan.”

The term “sedo politics” (royal in-law politics) describes the period 1800 to 1863 when national politics in Joseon was exclusively led by a few powerful royal in-law families, most notably the Andong Kim and Poongyang Jo clans.

From“Collusive Oligopolistic Politics: Sedo and the Political Structure of Early-Nineteenth-Century Choson Korea” by Tae Yeon Eom (2012 thesis, University of British Columbia):

In contemporary Korean historiography, the reign periods of King Sunjo (r. 1800-1834), King Hŏnjong (r.1834-1849), and King Ch’ŏlchong (r. 1849-1863) are generally called “The Era of Sedo Politics” in Chosŏn Korea (1392-1910). In contemporary Korean historiography, the political theme of sedo predominated after the death of King Chŏngjo (r. 1776-1800), when national politics was exclusively led by a few powerful royal in-law families, most notably the Andong Kim and P’ungyang Cho clans, for sixty-three years. Obviously, those two major clans enjoyed extensive political authority and high social status in the nineteenth century.

Notes:

(1) Queen Shinjeong was portrayed by Chae Soo-bin in the 2016 hit “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds” aka “Love in The Moonlight." Queen Shinjeong’s husband Crown Prince Hyomyeong (King Munjo) was portrayed by Park Bo-gum.

(2) In Season 2 , Ep. 4 of “Kingdom,” Crown Prince Lee Chang visited in Ganghwa Island his distant relative Prince Noseong, an impoverished member of the royal family. The drama portrays Prince Noseong as a lowly fisherman but who’s a well-read man. This character was probably based on King Cheoljong (1831-1864), the last puppet king of the Andong Kim clan. Unlike the drama, however, in history, King Cheoljong was illiterate, which made it easy for him to be controlled by the Andong Kim clan.

“Kingdom” Season 2, Ep. 4
B. Eps. 8 and 10: References to the persecution of Catholics during the Joseon Dynasty

B-1. In Ep. 8, at around the 43:00 mark, Bong-hwan (Queen Cheorin) remembers what he learned in history classes about King Cheoljeong; among other things, he remembers that King Cheoljong’s “grandmother and aunt got killed by getting baptized.”

In Ep. 10, at around the 46:57 mark, the Royal Chef tells Queen Cheorin (Bong-hwan) that he lives alone because all of his family were killed in 1839. Queen Cheorin (Bong-hwan) then recalls that he was referring to the “Gihae Persecution.”

B-2. Some of the well-known persecution of Catholics during the Joseon Dynasty were the Sinyu Persecution of 1801, the Gihae Persecution of 1839, the Byeongo Persecution of 1846, and the Byeongin Persecution of 1866.

Relevant discussions:

From “A Brief History of the Catholic Church in Korea” (WSJ) : “The Sinyu Persecution - In 1801, more than 300 people were killed as the ruling Joseon Dynasty, under newly ascended King Sunjo, staged a clampdown on the Catholic Church in Korea, ostensibly because the religion clashed with ideals of Neo-Confucianism and threatened the social hierarchical system. Yi Seung-hun was among those executed.”

From “Korean Catholicism marked by volatile history“ (Korean JoongAng Daily) : “Catholic believers suffered numerous rounds of persecution - the Sinhae Persecution (1791), the Sinyu Persecution (1801) and the Byeongin Persecution (1866) to name just a few - with about 10,000 missionaries and believers killed over a century.”

B-3. The only K-drama I’ve watched that depicted the persecution of Catholics during the Joseon Dynasty is “Yi San, A Wind in the Palace.” In Eps. 60-61, the brother of FL Sung Song-yeon and his fellow Catholics were blamed and arrested for an assassination attempt against King Jeongjo.

C. Ep. 8: Korean seesaw (“neolttwigi”)

In the early part of Ep. 8, Queen Cheorin and her attendant play on a “neolttwigi” (Korean seesaw).

2nd photo from National Geographic by W. Robert Moore, circa 1931
From Folkency: “Neolttwigi (lit. jumping on a board) refers to seesawing, a traditional entertainment practiced mainly by women during the Lunar New Year season. A large rectangular board is supported in its middle by a round hay bundle and two players take turns pushing hard on their end of the board with their feet in order to make the other end spring up.”

It is thought that Yangban women developed “neolttwigi” to see over the walls that surrounded their homes, as women in traditional Korea were rarely allowed out of their living compounds, except at night. (Wikipedia, citing Rodney P. Carlisle, Encyclopedia of Play in Today’s Society, Volume 1)

D. Ep. 12: Surit-nal (Dano Festival); ceremonial robes and head gear of Joseon kings

In Ep. 12, King Cheoljong presides over the Royal Banquet during the celebration of the Surit-nal (Dano Festival). His ceremonial robe is called “gujangbok,” while the head gear is called “myeonryugwan” (The Talking Cupboard) .

https://preview.redd.it/kpaoer4z13pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9a1e536f919350963e9de1ecd4fbf2ba20d6cfa
The robe and head gear were worn by the King and the Crown Prince during special events; with the head gear, the more the number of strings, the higher the rank. The jade object that he’s holding is called the “hol” (or “okgyu” depending on the type of jade used to make it.

E. Ep. 14: Ice was a valuable commodity during the Joseon Dynasty.

In Ep. 14, the Grand Queen Dowager tells Queen Cheorin (Bong-hwan) that ice is a valuable commodity in Joseon.

From “Summer on ice: How ice became an essential part of summer life in Korea” (Korea Herald):

During the Joseon era (1392-1910), ice was a national asset under the control of the king, and accordingly, a luxury for noblemen.
Harvested from rivers and ponds in the winter, ice blocks were stored at facilities called “binggo.” They were used for ancestral rituals, for medical purposes and to keep food cool. Seoul districts Seobinggo and Dongbinggo have their origins in the history of ice storage.

From “Keeping food cool, the ancient way” (Korea JoongAng Daily) : “Since the year 505, or the 6th year of King Jijung’s reign, until the arrival of freon and electricity centuries later, Koreans used stone bunkers to store blocks of ice throughout the year. These seokbinggo, literally “stone ice storage,” were located around the country. Local governments sometimes delivered ice to palaces, but mostly used ice as a means to prevent special local products from spoiling on the way to a palace.”

From “Feeling the heat: The luxury of ice” in Joseon (Korea Times) by Robert Neff:

The Korean government maintained two large ice storage facilities at Seobinggo and Dongbingo, where huge slabs of river ice (nearly two meters long and about 12.5 centimeters thick) were covered with straw and preserved throughout the year. Court officials and others who possessed “bingpae” ― an ice ration card ― were regularly able to obtain a certain amount of this valuable commodity (based on their rank) for their own use.
The common people, however, had to either purchase ice on the black market or from ice merchants. The black market ice ― obtained illegally from one of the government ice storage facilities ― was probably considered to be safer but much more difficult to obtain and so most people had to rely on local ice vendors.

Notes:

(1) “The Grand Heist” is a 2012 South Korean historical comedy film about a gang of 11 thieves who try to steal ice blocks from the royal storage, Seobingo, during the last years of the Joseon era.

(2) In Ep. 9 of “A Jewel in the Palace,” crisis hits as Lady Han falls sick and Jang Geum, with Keum Young, is left to prepare the food for the king and his entourage in the royal hunt. When the Head Eunuch tells Jang Geum and Keum Young that the king wants cold noodles, he asks them if they brought ice with them. (When I first saw this scene back in 2015, I thought, “What’s the big deal with ice?”)

(3) In Ep. 2 of “The Tale of Nokdu,” Yul Mu prepares for Dong Joo a dessert for breakfast. The gisaengs around him become awestruck after the package that his bodyguard brought turns out to be a small block of ice.

What Yul Mu prepared for Dong Joo is similar to “patbingsu” (“bingsu).” Bingsu was introduced to Korea during the Japanese colonial period, but according to “Snowy delights and variations on bingsu” (Korea Herald) , shaved ice treats existed even during the Joseon Dynasty.

https://i.redd.it/n78c477zy2pa1.gif
This is a bit off-topic, but notice two things after Yul Mu’s bodyguard finishes chopping the ice into smaller pieces:

(a) Before sheathing his sword into the scabbard, the bodyguard makes a downward slash with his sword and with a quick wrist flick; he did this to get rid of the water that may create rust in his sword. A swordsman also does this after slashing an enemy; blood may also cause the sword to become rusty.
(b) The bodyguard sheaths his sword into the scabbard with the bladed side up. Why? Two reasons. One, if the bladed edge is sheathed with the bladed edge down, gravity will pull the blade down into the scabbard, causing the blade to become dull. Two, it seems that when a sword is sheathed with the blade up, it’s easier to unsheathe the sword and quickly attack an enemy.

(4) In Ep. 7 of Mr. Sunshine, Ae-shin and her servant Haman enjoy “patbingsu” (“bingsu”) in the French bakery.

F. Ep. 14: Donghak (religion, movement, peasant revolution)

In Ep. 14, the ministers threaten King Cheoljeong that if he does not order the execution of Dam Hyang (the little girl who saved Queen Cheorin from being poisoned), they will consider him as a supporter of the “Donghak” religion and its followers.

From Wikipedia:

Donghak (lit. “Eastern Learning”) was an academic movement in Korean Neo-Confucianism founded in 1860 by Choe Je-u. The Donghak movement arose as a reaction to seohak (“Western learning”), and called for a return to the “Way of Heaven.” While Donghak originated as a reform movement and revival of Confucian teachings, it gradually evolved into a religion known today as “Cheondoism” in Korea under the third patriarch.
Choe was alarmed by the intrusion of Christianity (Catholicism), and the Anglo-French occupation of Beijing. He believed that the best way to counter foreign influence in Korea was to introduce democracy, establish human rights and create a paradise on Earth independent of foreign interference.
In 1892 the small groups of the Donghak movement were united into a single Peasant Guerrilla Army or Donghak Peasants’ Army. The peasants worked in the fields during the day, but during the night, they armed themselves and raided government offices and killed rich landlords, traders, and foreigners. They confiscated their victims’ properties for redistribution.
Choe Je-u was executed as a criminal by the government. The movement was continued by Choe Si-Hyeong (1829–1898), who systematized its doctrine. He too was executed.

G. Ep. 16: Difference between “Jo” and “Jong” in the posthumous (temple) names of the Joseon kings; the Joseon kings’ royal portraits and dramas such as “Painter of the Wind” and “Saimdang”

G-1. In Ep. 16, during the Royal Portrait painting session, Queen Cheorin wonders about the difference between between “Jo” and “Jong” in the posthumous (temple) names of the Joseon kings. The subtitles say that “jo” is added to the name of a king who’s honored for doing something great; on the other hand, “jong” is added to the name of a king who’s honored for his virtue. Well, this is just one of two reasons for the difference.

The website “dramasROK” in its in-depth article cites Korean historian Sul Min Suk who gives two reasons for the difference:

(1) Relationship of the king to his predecessor:

“If the successor was the king’s son – or next in line to the throne – then that king was given a posthumous title ending in JONG.
“BUT if the king was not next in line to the throne and started a new line within the Yi dynasty then his posthumous name was JO.”

(2) “The ending JO was given to the founder of the dynasty – Taejo – for great achievements establishing a new dynasty. And then his descendants were supposed to be named JONG. So in a way, the title JO could be considered superior to JONG. And from now on this was the case. JO was seen as a more elite title to JONG. It started with King Seonjo…”

Relevant discussions: Why was King Sejong named "Sejong" instead of "Sejo"? and “Rulers of the Joseon Dynasty and KDrama Interpretations”

G-2. The Joseon kings’ royal portraits and dramas such as “Painter of the Wind” and “Saimdang”

Only seven portraits of five Joseon kings remain today as the others were destroyed during the Korean War (1950-1953). These surviving portraits are those of King Sejong, King Yeongjo, King Jeongjo, King Cheoljong, King Gojong, and King Sunjong. You can view these portraits at the Royal Portrait Museum in Jeonju, Korea.

For a more detailed depiction of how the Joseon kings’ royal portraits were drawn according to strict standards, you can watch “Painter of the Wind” (2008; Eps. 10-11) and “Saimdang” (2017; Ep. 22).

H. Ep. 16: Secret Royal Investigators during the Joseon Dynasty; secret royal investigators as depicted in “100 Days My Prince” and “Under The Queen's Umbrella”

H-1. In Ep. 16, King Cheoljong sends his trusted man Hong as a secret royal investigator to the most corrupt place in south Joseon. In his confrontation with a nobleman in a gisaeng house, Hong displays his “mapae.”
From “Amhaeng-eosa - secret royal inspector in Joseon Kingdom”:

“They were undercover officials directly appointed by the king and were sent to local provinces to punish corrupt officials and comfort the sufferings of people while traveling incognito. The amhaeng-eosa system was one of the most excellent inspection systems in the world, the likes of which is very unique and hard to find in other countries.”
The “mapae” was the badge of the secret royal inspectors, and the number of horses carved on it indicated the number of horses that they could requisition from the royal stables (“saboksi”) in pursuit of their assignment. The secret royal inspectors also used the “mapae” to summon soldiers.

The book “Corea, The Hermit Kingdom” (1888) by William Elliott Griffis states several interesting things about the secret royal inspectors. They were called “The Messengers on the Dark Path,” and to prevent them from abusing their powers, they were secretly monitored by a “yashi” or “Night Messenger.” Griffis states:

“An E-sa, or commissioner, who is to be sent to a distant province to ascertain the popular feeling, or to report the conduct of certain officers, is also called ‘The Messenger on the Dark Path.’ He receives sealed orders from the king, which he must not open till beyond the city walls. Then, without even going to his own house, he must set out for his destination, the government providing his expenses. He bears the seal of his commission, a silver plate having the figure of a horse engraved on it. In some cases he has the power of life and death in his hands.
“Yet, even the Messenger of the Dark Path is not free from espionage, for after him forthwith follows his ‘double’ the yashi or Night Messenger, who reports on the conduct of the royal inspector and also on the affairs of each province through which he passes. The whereabouts of these emissaries are rarely discoverable by the people, as they travel in strict disguise, and unknown.
“This system corresponds almost exactly to that of the ometsuke (eye-appliers), for many centuries in use in Japan, but abolished by the Mikado’s government at the revolution of 1868. It was by means of these E-sa or spies that many of the Corean Christians of rank were marked for destruction. The system, though abominable in free countries, is yet an excellent medium between the throne and the subject, and serves as a wholesome check on official rapine and cruelty.”

H-2. Secret royal inspectors as depicted in "100 Days My Prince" and "Under the Queen’s Umbrella":

In Ep. 7 of “100 Days My Prince,” a royal secret inspector (“Amhaengeosa”) saves Yul and Hong-shim from the corrupt magistrate and Master Park. Hong-shim previously recognized that the man sleeping in her father’s room was a royal secret inspector because he was holding a “yuchuk” (a brazen ruler that inspectors used for several purposes, including making sure that the measurement system for taxation was correctly followed).

https://preview.redd.it/fp2wmm7kz2pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbb8423675f5ae42963be7a4c1843021afde71bb
In Eps. 8-10 of “Under The Queen's Umbrella, as part of the contest, the Grand Princes and the princes disguise themselves as “secret royal inspectors” (“amhaeng-eosa”) in pursuit of the assignments given by King Lee Ho. In some scenes, you can see the inspectors’ seal (badge) and tool: the “mapae” and the “yuchuk.”

I. Miscellaneous notes: Ep. 11: the fight with fans as weapons; “jangot” or head covering for noblewomen during the Joseon Dynasty ; the beautiful bridge across the pond in Ep. 1 and other episodes

I-1. Ep. 11: During the festival, King Cheoljoeong and Kim Byeong-in fight using fans as requested by the Grand Queen Dowager. While they’re using ordinary fans, there’s actually a martial art system using a fan as a weapon.

https://preview.redd.it/xifgh51b23pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58765eca5345effd9c2f3bbc9d82699a523d54f2
From Wikipedia: Tessenjutsu (Japanese; lit. “iron fan technique”) is the martial art of the Japanese war fan (tessen). It is based on the use of the solid iron fan or the folding iron fan, which usually had eight or ten wood or iron ribs. The use of the war fan in combat is mentioned in early Japanese legends.

In Ep. 11 of “Saimdang,”Lee Gyeom fights off Min Chi-hyung’s men using his fan.

I-2. “Jangot” (alternative spelling ”changot”): similar to the outer jacket of a hanbok but with a collar and a ribbon for tying both sides; according to the principles of the Joseon Dynasty’s Confucianism, women were ordered not to show their face to men, so they would cover their faces in many ways while going out. (Wikipedia)

From “Veiling of Korean Women: The Neo-Confucian Influence in Comparison to the Veiling of Muslim Women” by Hye Ok Park (Claremont Graduate University, Department of History) :

Different types of veils
“There were several different types of veils, Sseugae, worn by Korean upper-class women: Nuhwool, a black sheer silk framed veil to cover from head to waist (Figure 3), Jangot, a head and face-covering in the shape of overcoat, usually made of green pure silk with purple collar and chest straps to be tied at the chin (Figure 4), and Sseugae chima or shorter Jangot, worn by the lower-ranking upper-class women (Figure 5).
“Lower-class common women were not subjected, or allowed, to wear any headdresses except for the purpose of protection from weather, hot or cold, in which case they wore a simple square piece of cloth, called cheoneui, folded in half diagonally and tied in the back of the head. It was common that they did not wear anything to cover their heads or faces when they went out on their own or accompanying a noble woman as seen in Figure 1 above.”

I-3. The beautiful bridge and pond shown below are used as the location for several scenes in “Mr. Queen”, starting with Ep. 1. This bridge is located in the Gungnamji Pond (Historic Site No. 135) in Seodong Park; it is Korea’s first artificial pond and was created by King Mu from the Baekje Dynasty. The bridge and pond have been used in other dramas such as “The Flower in Prison,” “The Joseon Gunman,” and “The Tale of Nokdu.”

2023.03.21 07:18 StarCrimson25 1 am idea fueled by Faygo: Duel Terminal

Okay so the Duel Terminal basically introduced a number of archetypes even having their own lore within the Terminal itself.
So what if Like in a yugioh spinoff series or something The Duel Terminal is some kind of place that gives you access to the worlds of the monsters themselves. Like uhh...something like Kingdom hearts I guess. Multiple worlds in the universe, each within their own Pocket Dimension. None of them really interact with each other unless some of them leave their dimension to do shit cough El Shaddoll Construct cough But the overall space that these dimensions inhabit and exist in would be known as the Duel Terminal.
Like The shadow realm can be this shared version of their owl hell/a dimensional prison. This is not refined at all. I'm very tired.
I just think it'd be cool to see some of these stories animated or to even have this idea put to use in a series or something. Maybe the Monster world and human world are gonna collide or some shit idk.

The Story: When a seemingly-powerless human walks straight through the wards shielding her bestiary, Aloe finds herself with a mystery on her shop floor - and with her merciless kin eager to get their hands on him, they've got a deadline on solving it.
---------------------------------
Aloe took a step back, green eyes wide.
Behind her frozen facade, though, her thoughts raced at a hundred miles an hour. A human. Here.
That was a problem. A big one. It meant something had gone terribly wrong with all of the enchantments on the Dragon—and now, she had to move fast if she wanted to keep Secrecy intact.
The man took a shuffling step backward, going paler by the second. Sweat beaded on his forehead. “Shit,” she heard him whisper. The tension building in his voice was clear.
So when he turned, bolting for the door, she was ready. A trilling whistle exploded from her throat, her lips shaping the tone to a high, looping pitch. The door of the Dragon slammed shut. The deadbolt clacked home.
The human hit the wood a heartbeat later, wrestling with the latch. “Open,” Aloe heard him gasp. “Open, dammit!” His expression twisted even as he said it. Recognition, Aloe knew.
One last slam of his fist against the wall, and he spun, glaring at Aloe from beneath a mess of sandy brown hair. “What the hell is this?” he spat. “Just- Just let me go. I’ll call the cops.” As if remembering himself, he started patting at his coat, his bag dropping forgotten to the wooden floor.
Aloe had already put a hand to her belt, running her fingers across the blocky, wood-and-metal shape hanging at her hip. A kalimba. Not the most complex instrument ever devised, but simple was all she needed. She plucked one of the tines, letting the smooth, bell-like note ring through the shop. Centering herself, she started to play, fingers flying faster as she settled into a rhythm. Her magic rose, called up by the clean, pure melody.
“You’ve got to be shitting me,” she heard from across the room. Her brow furrowed. She’d already started her lullaby—there was no way anyone should be left standing still, much less a magic-less human.
But when she looked up, she found the human man scrolling through his phone, terror steadily replacing confusion on his face. “That’s not-”
“No service in here,” Aloe said softly. The man looked up at the sound of her voice, and she sighed inwardly at the frenzied look in his eyes. She dragged her fingers across the kalimba, letting another chord sail out. Nice and slow, Aloe. It’s no different from calming a scared gryphon. “It’s okay. Nothing is wrong. No one will hurt you.”
The words were laced with another enchantment—a sedating charm, this time—but once again, her magic seemed to vanish when it brushed his skin. He shook his head wildly, wordless, and returned to wrestling with the door. The phone fell from his fingers, forgotten.
Aloe’s heart started to pound. Daisy was there alongside her, hackles raised and a snarl on her lips. When a knurl got to growling they growled, and she could already see the impact it was having on their unwelcome guest. She dropped a hand to the hound’s head, still strumming the kalimba with her other.
“You’re safe,” she murmured, reaching deeper into her well of magic. “Breathe, friend. None will harm you here.” Her unease grew by the second, even as she wove a sleeping charm over the entire Dancing Dragon. She was old, yes, and her magic was powerful enough she didn’t fear often for her safety, but it was specialized. She had sleep, and she had dreams. If they didn’t work on this human, what else could she bring to bear here?
Carefully, agonizingly slow, she inched to the side, to where her field kit sat forgotten alongside the counter.
The tension in her eased as she felt the magic start to take hold, the whole room resonating with the steady peal of the tines. The sunbirds overhead came to rest on their beams. The sprites drifted back to their crystal orb, their light dimming. Even Daisy sank to the ground with a whine, laying her head on her neatly-crossed paws.
The human, however, whirled back around to face her, face wild. “Let me out!” he roared—and he broke into a mad dash back toward her, a wordless cry on his lips.
Aloe was faster. She snatched her hand crossbow from the top of the kit, leveling it at him. He was halfway across the shop floor when she pulled the trigger.
The dart notched against its string shot forward, lancing deep into the man’s shoulder. She had a frozen moment of fear as she saw it bite home. If this didn’t work, she didn’t have any other options—but the poison it was loaded with was made from a heavily diluted basilisk venom, brewed by a dear friend she trusted wholeheartedly. She’d seen the same darts take down a charging troll.
It’d work.
The man pressed onward another lumbering step, and Aloe danced back, her breath catching in her throat. It wasn’t working. She had to-
One more lurch, and she saw the man’s eyes roll back in his head. He dropped like a sack of potatoes, hitting the ground hard.
And with that, finally, the Dancing Dragon was quiet.
Aloe took a long, shuddering breath, pressing a hand to her chest. Her other hand shook as she laid her crossbow back atop her field bag. Her heart hammered away fast as a hummingbird’s, her blood rushing through her veins. “That was too close,” she whispered, eyes still fixed to the motionless form of the human. “What in Ora’s merciful embrace was that, Daisy?”
The knurl let out a whine in her sleep, rolling over to her side. Despite the panic of the moment, Aloe let out a shaky laugh, casting a derisive look toward the hound.
And as she collected herself, she started to circle the fallen man, her mind churning away. “What are you?” she whispered, crouching down beside him. Warning bells rang in her head, screaming for her to stay back, to get away. She ignored all of them, reaching out to grip the man gently by the chin.
Well, he looked human enough. Aloe grimaced, leaning in a bit closer. Dhumir were hardy folk, and they had a bit of magic resistance about them. Maybe this fellow had a few drops from one of their bloodlines to his name. He certainly didn’t have the delightfully solid bone structure of most of them, but neither could she place him as belonging to another of the light-touched races.
Releasing him, she stood with a groan. “What am I doing?” she mumbled, burying her face in both hands. The truth of the situation was obvious. He wasn’t a dhumir, or one of the diminutive gallafi, or an erelin like herself. No matter how hard she tried to find another alternative, there was only one answer. The same one she’d been staring down from the start.
He was human. And yet somehow, he’d blasted her wards to smithereens, shrugging off every last spell she threw at him.
“Lucky I still had my kit out,” she mumbled. Her hands raked through her hair, teasing at the strands that’d fallen from her knots and ties.
Underneath it all, she recognized that she was just wasting time. She’d laid the human flat, but considering her magic had had little effect on him, she couldn’t guarantee he’d be down for long—or that she could do it a second time.
Which meant that as little as she wanted to, she had another job to take care of before he woke up.
Heart leaden, she eased her phone from its pocket, staring down at the blank screen. She wouldn’t have service here any more than the human did. Cell phone towers hadn’t learned how to penetrate a seemspace yet, Mother be praised. But she still had options.
Her nostrils flared as she eyed the device like it’d leap from her hand and attack. Do it, you coward. Finally, she dragged a finger around the phone’s outer edge, clearing her throat. “Heed me,” she mumbled. No song required—it was just a sliver of Rote magic, like any light-touched child of Ora could perform. “Sing out across untold distances.”
The magic took hold—and as the phone started to glow in her hand, she raised it begrudgingly to her ear.
—------------------------
Daisy whined, fixing a red-eyed, mournful look on her.
Aloe shook her head. “No.”
The knurl let out a low whuff, barely audible.
“I said no.” Aloe raised an eyebrow, turning her gaze more fully onto the beast. “I’m sorry I enspelled you. But you already had your dinner.”
Daisy’s flank heaved with a heavy sigh. She dropped back to the floor, laying her head on Aloe’s leg, grumbling all the while.
Aloe smiled to herself, thoughts a thousand miles away. Rat was still curled up on her shoulder, where he’d ridden out the whole boondagle. Her phone lay abandoned across the room. It’d bounced when she’d thrown it. It might even be broken. She’d regret it later, she was sure.
Right now it was all she could do to sit there, trying desperately to will away the sick feeling in her stomach.
The human hadn’t moved. That was the one blessing through all this. She’d pulled him into a more comfortable position after giving him a once-over, and fetched a pillow from her room over the shop. He’d snored away through all of it, totally unbothered.
“You’ll be fine,” she whispered, her gaze lingering on his face. He was young. Too damned young to be mixed up in something like this. “The district mages will get you sorted out, and you’ll toddle on your way none the wiser. You won’t even-”
Right on cue, she felt something prickle at the edge of her freshly-reapplied wards. Her skin prickled.
“Stay,” she said, laying a hand on Daisy’s shoulder. The knurl’s eyes snapped open—but she stayed where she was, lifting her head from Aloe’s leg and laying it back down on her paws. Aloe smiled, ruffling the hound’s yellow-green fur. “Good girl,” she murmured. “Just stay here.”
The fact Daisy was out in the open at all made her gut twist a little. Knurl weren’t exactly domesticated, generally. On the contrary, they were usually considered an aggressive breed. She knew what the prickling at her magic meant. Her visitors had arrived. The thought of them panicking and attacking her hound sent shivers of fear through her.
She stood, though, rocking a bit unsteadily on her feet. The tingle of magic against hers came again, more insistently, and she scowled. “Impatient bastards, as always,” she muttered, swiping a hand across her kalimba again. The Dancing Dragon filled with the clear notes, carrying her magic with them, and she felt her wards come open.
The others wasted no time. A blade of light lanced through the air at the front of the Dragon, tearing wide a breath later. A trio of figures piled out through the brilliantly-lit gap, emerging to gape, blinking, onto the Dragon’s shop floor.
Aloe grimaced at the sight of Willard among their number, his slicked-back hair recognizable even at a cursory glance. He’s Kyran’s advisor. You knew he would come. The other two mages she’d never seen before, but their gear was sturdy, padded out with thick leather and kevlar over their rough canvas uniforms, and that didn’t leave many options. So he sent his soldiers, too.
The pair of soldiers stiffened at the sight of Daisy lounging on the floor—then sprang apart, grabbing brass-and-elm wands from their belts. “That’s-”
That is one of my registered and approved familiars,” Aloe said, darting forward to place herself firmly between the soldiers and Daisy. Rat raised his head alongside hers, letting out a strident chatter. “This is my bestiary, gentlemen, not your damned shooting range. I have a license with the kingdom. If you harm anything here, I’ll-”
“Peace, Miss Aloisia,” Willard said, holding his hands up. He stepped past the two goons, offering her an easy, friendly smile. “No one intends a fight. It seems you’ve, ah…” His gaze dropped to the slumbering human. His eyebrow arched. “Run into a snag?”
“You could say that,” Aloe mumbled. She pressed her fingers to her temples for a moment, pressing gently. Calm down. Just do what you have to do, and they’ll leave. Pulling away, she stroked Rat’s head, taking a slow breath. “He waltzed straight in here.”
“And he saw?” Willard said, arching one eyebrow. He bent over with a groan, crouching beside the man, and started to probe for a pulse.
She was forced to nod. “I’m afraid so.”
“Haven’t you heard of wards?” one of the soldiers muttered under his breath. “Damned big shop like this, and you haven’t even-”
“I had wards,” Aloe snapped. She folded her arms, drawing herself up to her full height—however much good that did. She wasn’t exactly large, and Kyran’s troops both towered over her. “He walked straight through them, shredding the whole lot in the process.”
All three of her new guests stopped in their tracks. “Pardon?” Willard said. “You’re certain?”
“Absolutely sure of it,” Aloe said. “All of my lullabies bounced right off him, too. I had to stick him with basilisk poison to put him down.”
One of the soldiers snorted, a towering erelin with cobalt blue hair. Not a bloodline she recognized, that one. “A lullaby?” she heard him say, a derisive laugh under the words. His eyes swept up and down her form. “Will you sing somethin’ for us too, love? I wouldn’t mind seein’ you-”
“Watch your tongue, Jarlon,” Willard said, not looking up from his search of the downed man. “You’re biting off more than you can chew, and I won’t be the one to save you.”
The soldier stopped, surprise flashing across his face. He gave Aloe another look, then edged away.
“I don’t know what exactly he is,” Aloe said with a sigh, turning an admonishing look back on Willard. She pulled a bundle from her pocket—the man’s wallet. “I found this while disarming him.” Flipping it open, she showed them the ID within, labeling the man as one Rowen Cole. “It’s just basic human stuff. Nothing magical.”
“Very interesting indeed,” Willard murmured. He took the wallet from her, nodding along. “I’ve never seen a human who could do…well, anything like this.”
“Neither have I,” Aloe said. She pressed her lips tight together, starting to frown as one of the soldiers took the sleeping Rowen’s arm. “You’ll see to him, right? You won’t harm him?”
“He will be safe within Kyran’s territory,” Willard said smoothly, gesturing for the other soldier to join the first. “Worry not. We do have a protocol for such breaches, you know.”
Memory wipes and a toss back out onto the street. Aloe nodded, relieved. “Right. Good.” She’d feel more than a little bad if her duty to the kingdom’s precious Secrecy wound up getting the poor fellow killed. She hadn’t opened the Dragon to cause more bloodshed.
And as the two soldiers hoisted the human’s slumbering form up between them, Willard straightened, turning to Aloe. “Thank you for contacting us,” he said.
She shrugged, even as her skin crawled at the feel of him there in her shop. “Something like this needs to be dealt with promptly,” she said softly.
“Just so,” Willard said. He smiled, drawing back toward her. “Kyran was pleased to hear you’d contacted the district.” A moment of long hesitation, and his eyebrow quirked. “He speaks of you often, you know. I know he would be gladder still if you returned. If you’re ever of a mind to reconsider-”
“I made my decision clear,” Aloe said. The sentence was sharper than it needed to be, and she softened her expression not at all. Perhaps she’d be better served by demurring, here, but she’d told the bastard she wasn’t interested. It was time for him to respect that.
Willard waited a heartbeat longer, but sighed, nodding. “As you will,” he said. “Just know that door remains open, if your mind should change.”
It won’t. “Thanks,” she said, not an ounce of gratitude in the word. “Is there anything else I can help you with? I need to reopen my shop.”
“Yes, of course,” Willard said. “Thank you again, Miss Aloe.”
Her expression twitched. Her nickname, on his lips? She almost lost her cool then and there. It’d feel very good to finally tell the greased-up bastard where he could stick that presumption of his.
She nodded once instead, lips tight, and said not another word. The trio seemed to recognize they were on thin ice because for once they let the silence stand. Pulling their cargo a little higher, they trudged back toward their portal.
Aloe didn’t relax until they vanished through it, the magic sealing up as though it’d never been there at all. When the Dragon was dark again she sagged, suddenly more exhausted than ever. “Well, that’s about enough excitement for one day,” she mumbled.
Daisy lifted her head, letting out a low whine. Rat hopped down from her shoulder, trotting over to press his face against the hound’s, and earned a sloppy lick for his troubles.
She really should reopen the shop, like she’d told Willard. There were a lot of critters living inside the Dragon, and all of them liked to eat. She couldn’t afford to pass up the chance of a walk-by. At a minimum, she should just call Kanna, tell her about what’d happened, and keep her doors open.
But the odds of running into another Child of Ora out here randomly were low enough she couldn’t quite muster up the effort, and as much as she loved her friend, the thought of trying to rehash, just…everything, left her more tired than she already was. She turned away instead, trudging over to her field kit.
The dart she’d fired off had to be replaced and reloaded, of course. It wouldn’t do to leave herself unarmed in case something else went wrong. Then there were a whole mess of dens that needed to be mucked out. There were feathers and sheddings to be collected after that, nails to be trimmed and coats to be brushed.
She went through the motions, her head lost somewhere in the cloud of unease that still hung over her. It’d just all happened so quickly, started in a flash and ended with a bang. She had so many questions—and she’d let that bastard’s people tromp around in her shop.
That wouldn’t do either, so she mopped the place down for good measure, arms aching and eyes starting to go bleary. With every shove of the fibers, she drooped a little lower. The water splashed back and forth, roiling in its bucket like a miniature ocean. Her breath slipped from her chest, her eyes misting over. The waves crashed on, back and forth. The water was beneath her too, buoying her up with every breath. Back and forth, until-
Daisy barked.
Aloe jerked upright. Her eyes snapped open. Her chest ached, her lungs burning as she refilled them with sweet air.
Shaking her head, she started towards the Dragon’s shop closet, tucking the mop and bucket away. “That’s about enough of that,” she mumbled. Her eyes drifted back to her desk in the back, and the narrow drawer mounted beneath it.
It…was probably time. She really should call it a night.
With Daisy padding along at her side, she finished closing the front door up tight, wrapping her illusions snugly enough about the store that not even a light-touched would be able to spot it. The lantern, she pulled from the ceiling, blowing it out. The creatures quieted as the wick smouldered, recognizing the signs of their day ending. Rat ran circles around her feet, chirping in protest.
And with the shop darkened at last, she strode back to that desk. The drawer came open at a touch. Aloe stared down into it, eyes vacant as she scanned the rows of neatly-wedged vials.
There was no getting around it, though. Not tonight, with the stink of that bastard’s court still lingering in the Dragon and the ocean lapping at her mind. The dreams would have her tossing all night if she didn’t shut them up. Sighing, she pulled a vial out, popping the lid off. Down it went, swallowed in a single shot before she could taste the horrible bitterness of it.
Aloe felt it immediately, though. The heavy weight that settled across her shoulders, the cold numbness that spread through her veins. She grimaced. Daisy sidled over, ramming her head into Aloe’s leg, and she couldn’t help but chuckle. “I’m fine, dearest,” she murmured, giving the knurl’s head a rub. Stepping back, she held an arm out for Rat to jump onto. “Ready?”
Together they rounded the corner in the back of the Dragon, pushing through a set of swinging doors to the stairs beyond. Aloe waited, pausing a step at a time, as Daisy clambered up the stairs, whining. The sight and sound of it all made her sigh. The leg must be bothering her. She’d have to find an ampoule of salve for it soon.
By the time the two of them trudged down the hallway through the living quarters, the edges of her sight were starting to go fuzzy. She grimaced, rubbing at her eyes, and pushed through the door into her quarters. “Damn stuff works fast.”
As she flopped down on the mattress, though, vanishing into the well-worn covers, that same unease still lingered at the back of her mind. She stared up at the rafters. When Daisy crawled up alongside her, Rat taking up a position on her nightstand, she only gave the knurl a good rub.
But how had a human gotten into her shop in the first place?
That was the question that still burned at her, stuck in her craw. Who had that man been, and just….how?
“Rowan Cole,” Aloe whispered, and sighed. Kyran had him, now. That should relieve her, and yet…she’d met Kyran before. More often than not, being somewhere far, far away was preferable. A twinge of sympathy ran through her for the poor kid.
Well, he wouldn’t have to suffer it long. She allowed herself a tiny smile, eyes drooping closed. Her face sank into Daisy’s thick fur. The district’s mages worked fast. Rowen would be off and back to his business by the time morning came.
No reason at all to be worried.
Exhaling, Aloe curled up tighter against Daisy, succumbing to the waves.

2023.03.21 01:47 Key_Stuff2832 A twist on OOT

Link stood at the entrance to the temple of time and suddenly, he heard a voice behind him.
"Link, I have to tell you something," Link turned around quickly to notice what seemed to be zelda taking off a mask. "Mido!" said link, his voice trembling. "Thats right, it's me. The great mido!" shouted mido. "I knew that you would collect all the Spirit Stones for me so I could open the Door of Time and take over Hyrule!."
Link was shocked. He couldn't believe that it was Mido all along who had been manipulating him.
"Why would you do this?" Link asked, his voice filled with hurt and confusion. "Why would you want to take over Hyrule?"
Mido laughed. "I'm tired of being stuck inside a little village. I've been the boss of the kokiri now i'll be the boss of hyrule".
Suddenly navi flew towards mido. "Navi?" questioned link. "Hahaha, you really thought a fairy chose you?", "you're still mr. no fairy" laughed mido.
Link felt a deep sense of betrayal. He had thought that he was working alongside his friend Zelda to save the kingdom, but it had all been a lie.
"You're a monster, Mido," Link said, his voice filled with anger. "I will never forgive you for what you've done."

2023.03.21 00:30 Bladeocity_ 22 [M4F] Virginia/Anywhere/Online - Looking For That Player 2 To Spend Those Long Cozy Gaming Nights With 🎮

I've only posted on this subreddit a few times before and I have been going back and forth on it for a long while now. I think maybe it's because of the fact that if I did, I would be fully admitting to myself just how lonely I actually am. But there's really no point in trying to mask and run away from the glaring truth, so, here I am again. Taa-daah!
As most people on here are, or I assume, given the context of the subreddit, I am a person who's unfortunately lived the forever alone lifestyle, well, for most of my life. The last person I was close with was way back in the 6th grade (I'm a fourth year in college), and the closest I've had since then was those types of friends that would talk and hang out with you during class time, but the second the bell rings, instant transmission, they gone now. And if we're talking about my love life, well, let's just say the fact that I still haven't had my first kiss yet, should paint a good picture (or lack thereof I suppose) of that.
But I'm not trying to make this some sort of pity party for me, but rather to shed some background as to what I hope, fingers criss crossed, twisting and turning, and looping around each other, for what I want to potentially get out of this. Of course, having a girlfriend would be spectacular, but the second part in the word "girlfriend" is just as important, if not even more so. I'm tired of getting up everyday, doing college work, video editing (small time Youtuber), watching YouTube and playing video games, going to work (if I have a job at a given time if I'm not focusing on university), and going to bed, and rinse and repeat all alone.
I want that to change. I want to spend time watching stupid things with someone, having my butt kicked in Smash even though I've been playing it for years, arguing over which anime opening is better than another for no reason other than it being a means to spend time hearing each other's voice. To go out dates, to laugh, to explore, to cuddle, to do the things that come after that if you catch my drift (or technically before the cuddling, or both), and so much more. But every attempt I made well ehhhhh, well its led me to here.
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a little bit of description about me 😁:
https://imgur.com/a/KDvNYqx (A few more face pics are avaliable in the link provided)
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
My hobbies and interests ❤:
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
I feel like a bit of an ass writing this next part, as if I'm placing some kind of order on what kind of people I accept or don't accept, and that is not my intention in the slightest, but there are things that I am looking for in a person, just so I know that we can get along quite well, instead of me ending up talking to someone I have very little likelihood of jiving with. I don't waste anyone's time, including whoever is reading this.
Some of the things I'm looking for 🔍:
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
-----‐---------------‐----------------------------------------------------------------
And that's about it for now. Like I said before, I've only ever posted on here a few times before, so I don't know if I checked off everything that I should have said in a post like this, but hopefully (man I've been saying that word a lot here), this was enough to catch your attention and be willing to give a potential friendship/relationship with a guy like me, and if not I understand, and hope you find whatever you're looking for in someone else here. But if I have caught your eye, feel free to message me. It's been a long and lonely 22 years, and you'd probably make a wonderful change of pace.
Until then, bye! 🤗

2023.03.20 19:09 Topazdragon5676 Looking for Alternatives to TCG Player Buylist

Hi everyone,
I’ve been using the TCG Player Buylist for a while now but I’m getting tired of dealing with them as a company. I’m a primarily limited player and my goal is to just unload the cards that I draft.
I started using the buylist for several reasons;
These last two reasons are particularly useful to me as I walk away with many commons / uncommons / bulk rares. For example, right after Dominaria Remastered came out I was able to sell the basic lands that came in them for about $0.25 each. Also, many bulk rares and other C/U cards have buyers at $0.25 when a set is new or after the set is established but the cards are good in some formats.
I’m speculating, but I think that this is able to happen because I’m not really selling to TCG Player, just to other stores who have set a buy price which is lower then the standard “market” price, but higher then most retail stores set their buy prices.
But now the problems with dealing with TCG Player have become more then what I want to deal with. Their grading is way too strict. They list cards as “damaged” or “lightly played” when they are pack fresh (not frequently, but often.) Any bend in foils (also directly out of a pack) they reject. They spend $0.50 of my store credit to return a common foil that I was trying to sell to them for $0.25 and would happily throw away if they aren't buying it. They take too long to actually process my package and then take even longer to actually apply the store credit.
All that said, I’m now hoping to find another website that will buy my cards in a similar fashion, but doesn’t have the above problems. Stores like Star City Games and Card Kingdom are great, but there isn’t any opportunity to sell the bulk rares at higher than their very low bulk rate and they seldom buy commons / uncommons.
Any recommendations for an alternative to TCG Player’s buylist?
Thanks!

2023.03.20 19:00 Solar-X-Bombada Who is Really King?

After complete conquest of the map, I find certain nobles I recruited under desperation to obtain Supreme power low key contributors, and aging out and not producing heirs. Truly, it's better if I produce heirs that produce heirs that run the world. To complete this quest means I need to begin eliminating clans who will in turn join other factions. Problem A: clan gets punched out of my kingdom, now I must do battle with them endlessly until I tire and behead them all. Problem B: I must accumulate 100k influence to convince clans to eliminate any one clan. =improbable now that all factions are whittled to lowly raiding parties. Problem C: Changing policies does not give the king enough power to say "I'm King, bow down and live with my decision" Problem D: After giving a clan the boot their fiefs go up for bidding. The other Clans never select me as proprietor, or include me as a named possibility to vote on.
King thus is just a fancy title.

【Ghostblade x Yan】Adore
- Have to admit it, this is not about some kind of old-fashioned prince and princess, the story of love and redemption, nor is it a tribute to chivalrous love against the norms. He is not a prince, who will wake his beloved from her sleep with a kiss, not even a true knight, more like a dragon, trying to become a warrior. On the way home, he meets with a light elf who got lost in the miasma of the swamp.

Ghostblade looked at Haiqin Yan, who was sleeping next to him, she had already fallen asleep due to the tiring and hard work she had done during the day. The sound of steady breathing filled the silent night, the pouring moonlight was pushed back by the shadows, it gave more and more space to the darkness in the room.
He leaned against the wall, and the darkness seemed to follow him everywhere, just like an eternally faithful servant. Although the moonlight changed its direction several times, it didn't care at all. The full moon rose high, and the shadows beneath his feet gradually grew longer and longer, until half of the room was filled with darkness.
Opposite him, the princess of the Haiqin kingdom was sleeping, she perhaps born just so that everyone could admire a fragile but weak lark in a golden cage. People who grew up in the same environment will actually follow her to find the truths of history... Ghostblade could almost feel the divine mercy flowing out of her, also thoughts that shouldn't be in human hearts---if he wouldn't pay attention to everywhere, this princess already could have become a dead soul under some sharp blade.
He thought that they should act like mutually supportive travelers for each other. His strength will outwardly protect her from the external threats, and her strength will spread inwardly to help reveal the truth in his heart. In a sense, for both of them, the other personifies the missing half.
“Ghostblade, aren't you sleeping?”
Haiqin Yan woke up from her sleep and interrupted Ghostblade's musing with a tired voice.
"Murderers don't need sleep."
"My little princess, have you ever thought about where you would be without your kidnapping?"
“At worst, they might have been sacrificed me to the gods... I don't know what their purpose is, I can't guess the final outcome.”
Haiqin Yan didn't see Ghostblade, as the man was almost swallowed up in the darkness. She had the feeling that she was talking to the void, as he answered her question.
"...And that's all, you accepted your fate so easily?"
"I am a weak human being, Ghostblade. I have no magical powers. When I cannot resist the hand of the fate, I follow the guidance of my heart and exchange this small loss for the temporary peace of all mankind."
Haiqin Yan heard a chuckle not far away, as Ghostblade's slightly mocking words reached her ears, "This is indeed a great dedication, Your Royal Highness."
Haiqin Yan ignored his amused attitude and covered her eyes with his palm, "...Anyway, Ghostblade. Thank you for giving me the chance to fight with fate again."
"Meeting you is also my destiny. Even if this choice leads to an unknown abyss, I will not regret it."
The darkness suddenly quieted down, and it took a while for Ghostblade to speak again, "It's late, go to sleep."
"Good night to you too."
He had always thought of himself as a man trapped in a bottomless abyss, until he saw starlight with his own eyes. The harbinger of death, surrounded by the undead and anger, yet he wanted to become her god at any moment.
"This is the price you pay for trying to change your destiny. ” A voice seemed to come from somewhere: “You will always carry this cross on your back...”
Ghostblade stood up and walked over to the window, where the moonlight was shining brightly, he closed his eyes and muttered:
“Good night my little princess.”

I will fight for you in the incoming years.

2023.03.20 15:54 kan3lia I have a confession

I did not finish reading the series. It did go very well in the beginning for 3 years ago but I did also need to escape the real world. I'm finished the first 6 books so only need Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash
The books look great on my bookshelf, the two I didn't read is even up there next to the others instead in my tbr pile.
I don't even feel the urge to read them, because I feel like the ending is pretty much Aelin bravely fight for freedom and win over the evil She will make a safe place for fairies (half & full blooded) in her Kingdom
Am I completely wrong with the ending?
Furthermore I m getting a little tired of some of the tropes in the book eg - One saviour with infinite powers - The heroes isn't "normal humans" (making mistakes, sometime selfish, kill (like Aelin doesn't kill but is an assassin, it doesn't give any meaning)) - Evil "persons" there is just evil to be evil (and gain power)
So any good advice? I feel like I need to read all the books when I m going to read the last two
What is a good argument for me to read them all?

Semblance: Bullet time, he can slow time to absorb details or react to events in his proximity allowing him to react very fast to dangers. However, he can only use it for 5 to 7 seconds at a time and he needs to recharge it by waiting at least 2 minutes. Not freezing time, more like the brain and body reacting at the speed of a bullet.
Or
Animal morphing: Roth Oberon is able to turn into a big cave bear and is able to remain in full control after years of practice. However to maintain control of his semblance he needs to change into a bear once every 2 weeks for at least 2 hours. Gained the semblance in his 3rd year as a Huntsman trainee during a hunting mission.
Profession: Huntsman in training at Beacon academy, team leader. After graduation: Guardsman of Beacon.
Appearance: Muscular arms with strong legs and arms, broad shoulders, gold brown bear eyes, brown bear fur, and brown hair. Bear mouth and ears. Note: Functional muscles instead for show.

Strengths:
-Roth is very strong and durable allowing him to survive hits that would kill many others.
- Adaptable to changing situations and has strong willpower combined with keen intelligence and a sharp mind.
-Versatile combat technique and knows how to use a variety of weapons or forms.
-His ability as a leader and calm attitude has kept his team in tip-top shape and has made them self-reliant on themselves making team effective alone, in pairs or as a group.
Weaknesses:
-Can be slow in a fight
-Has some trouble with his introversion and his lack of understanding people.
-Great anger towards Grimm makes him hunt them with abandon or lure them in relatively easily.
Colours: Black armour with camouflage under-suit for an appropriate environment.
Inspiration: What I want to be. A person who could beat Hazel Rainart and Brutes from Batman Arkham Knight. Gregor Eisenhorn of Warhammer 40k.
History: Born to a pair of bear faunus, one of them a cop and the other a member of Vale council, Roth could have had an easy life if life was kinder to him. A survivor of a Grimm attack on Mountain Glenn, he made it his life mission to eradicate Grimm from the face of Remnant. His sole focus in combat school became learning, discipline and bodybuilding. In a matter of months, he became strong as a tree and became the unofficial enforcer of his combat school keeping it clear from bullies. He was made team leader of team REPR(Reaper) due to his calm and observant nature. Over time his team where considered the deadliest team in Beacon history despite the conflicting personalities of the team. After graduation, Roth joined the Guardsmen, a school security force of Beacon with her old teammate Raina Odell. As a side job, he is working for Ozpin´s Inner Circle till current days with his old team in other Kingdoms. Remained in Vale after the Fall of Beacon and is currently fighting with Vale militia to secure Beacon.
Personality: As a child, Roth was a kind child making him an easy target for bullies in his childhood. After becoming tired of bullies when they crossed the line one too many times, he beat them and got his bullies kicked from school by baiting them to attack him under a hidden camera, giving them a chance to walk out when they thought he was vulnerable.
Desiring to always have the upper hand he learned to keep his emotions in check at all times and focused on his studies in his free time and school time. He is often considered emotionless by other people but no one is willing to say it in his earshot and he doesn´t mind this thought about him.
After his team helped him loosen up he discovered his liking for playing the saxophone, driving and outdoor camping. His team helped him want to become a better man than he thinks he needs to be.
Roth has a ruthless attitude when it comes to leadership and dealing with enemies. As a leader, Roth expects nothing but competence and giving 100% in combination with a firm chain of command and on-the-spot obedience. Punishments are harsh but fair.
Due to his mastery of emotions, he can make decisions that would make other people disgusted with themselves be it torture or cruel punishments. However, his team reminds him about his better nature and his actions have never been directed to hurt an innocent.
Extra skills:
- Scholar: His lack of social interaction in his school years made Rogert focus more on his studies than on making friends. Math skills and history were his best subject and often likes to talk about both when asked.
- Boatbuilder and Sailor: Roth knows how to build and sail with a wooden boat. However, due to the recent danger of the Grimm, he rarely gets a chance to use a boat without getting attacked by Grimm.

2023.03.20 12:02 TonyTony1287 The Walking Dead Ranking Every Episode

Oh my God was this list hard to rank 😅 I took about I would say at least 15 hours of my time into this and all of that was just to rank them at a certain level without much to say. First off we have about 8 Tiers from F,D,C,B,A,S,SS, and Premium though I barely put much into their. Remember this is just an opinion so don't take too harshly if your favorite episode isn't high on my list. For some episodes I may not say much or anything since this was too long originally.
F Tier, these are my least favorite episodes and most likely I have a vendetta against them in some way that made it hard for me to like them
  1. S2 Ep 8 Nebraska- I hate Lori and I think this episode expresses it, most definitely a vendetta. I didn't exactly like the stuff with Hershel and recovering though it was okay, but lori made some questionable decisions to go off on her own to look for Rick even though she should know he's fine seriously. She wrecks a car and then barely dies from a walker, mind you she is pregnant and shouldn't do these things easily my least favorite episode.
  2. S10 Ep 21 Diverged- I honestly forget this episode so much since it has nothing truly interesting or important to the story
  3. S7 Ep 6 Swear- this episode feels slow paced and dull due to oceanside being not seen well for me and I feel like Tara put on the best performance she could for it.
  4. S8 Ep 2 The Damned- this episode to me was just a lot of action and in the walking dead I don't want that. We see a couple of characters die (including Francine 🪦 I absolutely loved her character and hate how she died here :[ mindless) Erics death started here, but it just wasn't impactful enough.
  5. S3 Ep 11 I Ain't a Judas- Andrea is a boring character in the show and I hate her in this episode. The focus should've been on the prison honestly and maybe If she killed the Governor I would've understood her more.
  6. S10 Ep 20 Splinter- if most of the episode was real I would've loved it, but they weren't...
  7. S3 Ep 5 Say the Word- Andrea just isnt much good in this episode and Rick going crazy wasn't a fun idea to me.
  8. S8 Ep 3 Monsters- aside from the one fight with Rick I really didn't care much for it again for the fighting and having Morales return and die felt out of place.
  9. S2 Ep 2 Bloodletting- the group searching for Sophia was okay for a concept, but this episode was okay and went slow paced for me until the end.
D Tier, moving on these episodes were for me mostly just forgettable or boring so I won't say much except they weren't all bad
  1. S1 Ep 3 Tell it to the frogs- first off S1 won't be all high because I'm ranking EVERY episode, but this one felt slow in pace more as well compared to the last two. Shane was a badass though.
  2. S11 Ep 3 Hunted- Forgettable... Not much to say.
  3. S5 Ep 11 The Distance- Forgot entirely this was an episode, after rewatch still don't like it except for Aaron.
  4. S2 Ep 9 Trigger finger- It was a bit better than Nebraska, mostly cause of the Randel scenes.
  5. S7 Ep 14 The Other Side- Sasha somewhat makes a noble decision.
163-162. S11 Episodes 22 following 21- 22 had the Warden being uninteresting as a villain and 21 was boring as can be which is why they sit besides each other.
  1. S8 Ep 7 Time for After- I don't like the plans they have to deviate from Rick and him going to Jadis again feels like a horrible decision on his part.
  2. S9 Ep 8 Evolution- The ambience is the best part, though I hated Jesus' s death as it felt like a bad sendoff.
C Tier, These are a bunch of boring and hard to follow episodes that have some highs that keep it out of former tiers.
  1. S2 Ep 1 What lies Ahead- I liked the RV scene with Andrea, but what follows is dull.
  2. S11 Ep 4- The pope is somewhat average.
  3. S7 Ep 12 Say Yes- The carnival was a nice scenery for TWD, but they had too many fake outs with the walker "shooting" at them and the deer fake out.
  4. S9 Ep 7 Stradivarius- The Search for Eugene feels tiring to follow what's happening and I ended up watching the episodes once and never again because of it.
  5. S2 Ep 4 Cherokee Rose- Watching the episode is fun because of the well, though I feel like it was stupid as an idea as the group should have more common sense before doing something dumb.
  6. S2 Ep 3 Save The Last One- Shane was horrifying, but the rest was dull.
  7. S8 Ep 14 Still gotta mean something- Rick felt unnecessarly cold hearted in this episode killing off the Saviors that helped him which I didn't like, though Jared got a well deserved death.
  8. S4 Ep 9 After -It was okay watching Carl try to scavenge while Rick was injured and I liked the scene with his shoe being lost.
  9. S7 Ep 5 Go Getters- the episode itself wasn't bad yet I never really enjoyed it too much aside from Maggie being a badass and the ending was pretty good.
  10. S4 Ep 10 Inamtes- Inmates was a pretty well rounded episodes showing off some of the group which I liked seeing Tyreese the most.
  11. S8 Ep 6 The King, The Widow, and Rick- the episode was pretty lackluster for me and I didn't really appeal to seeing the garbage people much in this or everyone going to attack the saviors which was a dumb move to do. Ezekiel was probably the most fun of the episode.
  12. S3 Ep 16 Welcome to the Tombs- the finale for season 3 has always been horrible as it barely gives tension between the Governor and Ricks group, it just felt unfitting for a finale.
  13. S11 Ep 8 For blood- it was a okay Mid Season finale to say the least (sorry, 1/3 season finale). I did like some of the parts in it with Maggie which is why it sits higher than others.
  14. S5 Ep 7 Crossed- I thoroughly enjoyed the chase scene between the three officers and Ricks group, but that was about it.
  15. S4 Ep 13 Alone- I liked watching the parts of the group split up, except for Maggie, Bob, and Sasha as they felt very uneventful to me. What makes this episode better had to be the part about Daryl and Beth with the ending of the introduction to Joe's group.
  16. S7 Ep 10 New Best Friends- a lot of these parts I forgot about in this episode when it came to the Kingdom though after rewatching it I enjoyed those parts more than the Garbage people. I just honestly think Jadis's group is uninteresting and makes for no substance.
  17. S10 Ep 15 The Tower- I sometimes forget about this episode and it's premise with Beta, but I think it holds up enough for a weird one and The stuff with princess was okay.
  18. S9 Ep 3 Warning signs- I think the episode was okay, I just didn't like Season 9 A that much...
B tier, now we get to the episodes I could watch again in the past 6 months or binge through without skipping
  1. S11 Ep 2 Acheron Part 2- this was close to being put into C tier since I really hated some parts about it like how they left Gage to die and still had to fight off dozens of walking regardless. The group in the first two episodes seem to switch off and on from good to bad.
  2. S7 Ep 4 Service- for some reason people hate this episode and I can't see why except for the fact it mainly deals with Negan at Alexandria; in my opinion it was him and a couple other characters who saved season 7 and 8 for me.
  3. S10 Ep 3 Ghosts- I forget the episode...
  4. S10 Ep 7 Open Your Eyes- I thought the episode was fine as I don't hate Siddiq and all, though I liked and hated the ending as I loved the twist of Dante and hated that Siddiq had to die so early on.
  5. S6 Ep 7 Heads Up- I didn't like the twist of Glenn and all, but I liked the suspicion with Carol and Morgan as well as the Ending being dramatic.
  6. S8 Ep 11 Dead or Alive- it's not good to know when you remember an episode due to bad things. Daryl has been making more off decisions for the character and Tara seems to be completely Reckless now making me hate her moving forward.
  7. S4 Ep 4 Indifference- The Scenes with Carol and Rick we're amusing with crude Humour as well as some more tense scenes in my opinion and I hated/liked when Rick told Carol she couldn't come back.
  8. S3 Ep 6 Hounded- honestly I would've rather put this episode a little bit higher due to Merle (probably my favorite charcater which contributes to a lot of episodes being higher) being a badass while fighting Michonne and pulling out puns as well. The reason it doesn't get higher is still due to Rick and the phone situation being uneventful.
  9. S11 Ep 9 No Other Way- Alden dies in this episode which I should've seen coming that sucks. The ending feels misleading a bit though everything else in the middle is pretty great.
  10. S11 Ep 5 Out of the Ashes- literally the only reason I put this here was due to Lance so deal with it!
  11. S4 Ep 11 Claimed- Rick had a pretty solid pair of scenes with the Claimers and I liked watching Glenn and Tara (Surprisingly).
  12. S10 Ep 13 What We Become- I thought the flashbacks/hallucinations we're pretty good, but aside from that this episode was just mediocre.
  13. S9 Ep 4 The Obliged- I liked watching Daryl and Rick fight each other over different views on how everything should be and the ending I thought was pretty suspenseful as well as the saviors and oceanside.
  14. S11 Ep 15 Trust- Lance feels exactly like the Governor in some of these episodes which is what I like about him, and from here I start to enjoy Princess maybe because Mercer is around more xd.
  15. S10 Ep 17 Home Sweet Home- I thought Maggie was a good enough concept for an episode with the reapers, though it didn't hit that hard watching again. It still Is most definitely better than the other 3 episodes of S10 part C but enough for A Tier.
A Tier, after this point complaints may start to stop, but that doesn't mean entirely. These episodes I enjoy watching over and over again with some good tension and comedy as well.
  1. S1 Ep 5 Wildfire- For the episodes Jim was in I liked him and learning his backstory as well so this was a pretty fun episode.
  2. S4 Ep 15 Us- the stuff with Abraham and their group was pretty wholesome to me and I liked Joe for the time being in here seeing how he is pretty fair to be honest giving things where they are due and trust to Daryl.
  3. S6 Ep 11 Knots Untie- I somewhat feel like the episode drags due to there being too much at hilltop, but it is a new community so I can't truly argue. I remember enjoyably when Rick stopped the assassination attempt.
  4. S8 Ep 9 Honor- the beginning with Carl I thought was good to showcase the events that unfolded before the decimation and Carl's death hit hard.
  5. S5 Ep 4 Slabtown- I personally don't mind the hospital arc too much, yet it won't get all of it's episodes too high of course. I liked watching Noah and Beth converse and I thought this was a new era for the walking dead.
  6. 10 Ep 1 Lines we Cross- the part with the Satellite was amusing to watch as it was a big change to see and I like that about the walking dead on occasions.
  7. S9 Ep 6 Who are you now?- I liked learning of Luke's Group (you heard me, Luke's Group) and what they have been like learning of some of their past.
  8. S10 Ep 8 The World Before- I liked mostly just watching two scenes, the beginning with Dante and Gabriel and Dante. I loved the fact no one even considered a Whisperer living amongst them and how he did some much devious stuff was mind boggling and amazing to watch. When Gabriel talks about forgiveness to Dante and kills him shows me how Gabriel has changed the past seasons.
  9. S7 Ep 9 Rock in the Road- Rick gives off a good speech to Ezekiel and I liked seeing him and Morgan reunite again. The stuff with Gabriel wasn't too bad either.
  10. S3 Ep 9 The Suicide King- the Governor finally seems to be starting to let things of him slip which I love to see. I also enjoyed watching Merle with Daryl as well too.
  11. S11 Ep 11 Rouge element- I thought that the twist of Steph was pretty good and I don't mind the episode being a bit long and tedious for it's reveal.
  12. S11 Ep 23 Family- I loved the fact Lydia got bit just because it shows us that people can still get bit and survive. It shows to me that in the finale no one could be truly safe even though Luke gets bit and still dies.
  13. S11 Ep 17 Lockdown- Saving Sebastian was okay ig.
  14. S8 Ep 10 The Lost and The Plunderers- Simon's character I think was made perfectly as he is a hotheaded person who is all about power and showing that off. Killing most of the Garbage people was terrifying to watch and showed how Negan could be more merciful than others.
  15. S1 Ep 1 Days Gone Bye- I think for the pilot it did it's job well and showed off enough of what the show could be. Of course this doesn't mean it was all good but as pilots go it was pretty solid.
  16. S11 Ep 1 Acheron Part 1- The only reason I put it this high was for the interrogation scenes especially when it came down to Ezekiel. Him and Mercer are honestly a great pair and I love his ending to the show as it's fitting.
  17. S5 Ep 10 Them- after losing most of the group it seems like a fitting episode of despair and plays it perfectly.
  18. S5 Ep 12 Remember- the first shown scenes of Alexandria was pretty good and I liked the interviews scene too. We also saw a lot of new character introductions.
  19. S11 Ep 6 On The Inside- The ferals was a nice touch of horror that I never knew I could need. Making the people with the ferals Virgil and Connie made the most perfect sense as well.
  20. S6 Ep 13 Not Tomorrow Yet- this episode shows off how our group is seeming to be the bad guys starting to kill people in their sleep. I like how Glenn and Heath have their first kills and show how they are changing.
  21. S7 Ep 1 The day will come when you won't be- I like the title as it references Doctor Jenner, but for the episode I liked Negan and that's mostly it. Seeing two people die was horrible to me, but necessary and since I don't rank episodes for being bad due to deaths I can still rank them high.
  22. S6 Ep 16 Last Day on Earth- Simon has a good introduction and I like them trying to get from point A to B, but what stands out to me most is probably Abraham and Eugene with his speech about him
  23. S7 Ep 15 Something they need- Sasha was probably the highlight of the episode for me and I liked them and Negan's interactions. It Is a good effort to show that they aren't all monsters and I like seeing Eugene as well.
  24. S3 Ep 7 When the Dead come knocking- Glenn and his interrogation with Merle was amazing and I liked seeing Glenn's true will shine.
  25. S8 Ep 12 The Key- I don't like this episode much honestly if it wasn't for Negan and Ricks Speech as well as Simon and his deviousness.
  26. S8 Ep 1 Mercy- the beginning I had to move up due to some good portions of it like Rick and Negan. I also liked the ending a lot even though I watched the trailer a lot and knew of Gabriel and Negan's interactions.
  27. S9 Ep 1 a New Beginning- wow two series beginnings next to each other... Yeah it's weird but they weren't exactly S Tier Material. The beginning with them trying to get a horse accessory was great tension to watch and I already love Ricks Beard.
  28. S10 Ep 18 Find me- okay so maybe I exaggerated My feeling towards Season 10 C a bit since I like some of the episodes a bit and others worse. The reason I put this here is mostly good plot lines and that was it.
Around here I wanted to say the reason for some episodes ranking higher is due to the fact the others are horrible and some of these have redeeming qualities. It's hard to put over 150 episodes ranked from horrible to greatness and know the points of interest.
  1. S3 Ep 3 Walk With Me- Merle brings joy to me seeing him again and I love him from here on out. I like how the Governor seems to be innocent enough until the big reveal with the militia which is amazingly put.
  2. S10 Ep 9 Squeeze- I hate Squeeze... There i said it. The cave sucks honestly and Id rather not watch it again because of that, but Negan is the only saving grace for this episode and if it wasn't for him I would never watch this episode again.
  3. S8 Ep 13 Do Not Send Us Astray- Simon attacking the Hilltop was the most great action of this season that I never minded and it felt terrifying after Tobin's fate was sealed.
  4. S3 Ep 12 Clear- I had to move it from S Tier, but nevertheless a great episode. Morgan's return was done perfectly and I felt like his character did a full 180 after this. Michonne and Carl's side story was also good.
  5. S2 Ep 12 Better Anglels- Shane and Ricks final confrontation was amazingly executed and loved the difference from the Comics with Rick killing shane and Carl shooting his reanimated self; Shane and Randel was also good too.
  6. S4 Ep 12 Still- Daryl and Beth make sense to pair together and I like seeing how we get a bit more back story to his character. They feel like the most perfect example to put for a mismatched pair.
  7. S6 Ep Thank You- The journey with Glenn's group trying to get back was amusing to see even though the dumpster ending wasnt really the best, still horrible to see.
  8. S10 Ep 4 Silence the Whisperers- Negan and Lydia have a good bond and I like how Negan defends her even though I hate how no one believes Lydia that Negan protected her.
  9. S8 Ep 4 Some Guy- I still love watching Ezekiel and the Kingdom so I enjoy this episode and how he feels defeated the whole time. Jerry is the best bodyguard in my opinion as well as it is shown and Shivas death is heartbreaking.
  10. S5 Ep 8 Coda- The reason I put this soo high was due to Rick and Bob. I did like the ending a bit even though I feel like Beth's death could've been avoided.
  11. S3 Ep 14 Prey- originally this episode was C Tier for me, but I re-watched it and put it this high due to the Governor being a literal psycho and I love this side of him.
  12. S11 Ep 20 What's been Lost- Lance felt underutilized as soon as he died, I really wished they could've made a difference with his exit on the show.
  13. S8 Ep 8 How it's gotta be- Forgot about Natanias death.
  14. S11 Ep 7 Promises Broken- Negan and Maggie had a good talk together about before.
  15. S10 Ep 6 Bonds- Okay.. XD.
  16. S6 Ep 10 The Next world- I thought the stuff with Rick, Daryl, and Jesus was goofy, but great.
  17. S11 Ep 19 Varient- I do like the idea of evolving walkers though I feel like it was a bit late in the show.
  18. S3 Ep 13 Arrow on the Doorstep- the meeting was just terrific to watch as the Governor is so sinister inside it with Milton and Hershel having a good talk as well with Martinez and Daryl having a good show off time. Merle and Glenn have some good times too.
  19. S9 Ep 2 The Bridge- The log scene was amazing and Aaron had a good scene with the amputation.
S Tier, These episodes are some of my favorite to watch with a good glass of Tea and some snacks.
  1. S7 Ep 7 Sing me a song- Negan and Carl were fun to watch as well as some more insight on the sanctuary as Daryl breaks free. Negan and Carl also Bond.
  2. S10 Ep 10 Stalker- Daryl VS Alpha!!!
  3. S11 Ep 16 Acts of God- Lance is very horrifying as to what his next move is and Leah's stuff was good.
  4. S3 Ep 8 Made to suffer- it was a great Mid season finale as I enjoyed the fight with the Governor and Rick as well as the ending with Merle and Daryl.
  5. S2 Ep 6 Secrets- Glenn has to deal with hiding multiple people's secrets and I feel like the comedy is pure gold here.
  6. S1 Ep 2 Guts- The rooftops scenes were great as well as the parts where they wear guys to avoid the walkers, it always felt like a sense of panic in this episode.
  7. S9 Ep 9 Adaptation- the introduction to Alpha was simple enough and I feel like it's a good episode.
  8. S11 Ep 10 New Haunts
  9. S11 Ep 12 The Lucky Ones- Carol finally feels a little bit like she's back to her old self in this community with Lance and their deals.
  10. S4 Ep 1 30 days without and Accident- probably my second favorite of the beginning episodes as it demonstrates exactly how the group has got along since the recent events. Has a good story with the shopping market and the roof caving in was awesome.
  11. S3 Ep 10 Home- this episode shows how Merle and Daryl are far apart which I can still keep watching Merle and be entertained as well as the fight scene at the end with the Governor being cocky as can be.
  12. S9 Ep 16 The Storm- snow is a new but simple thing that I like along with Negan Earning trust with Michonne.
  13. S10 Ep 2 We are the End of the World- Gamma saving Alpha is one of my favorite scenes of how it shows Alphas power towards the group and influence on it's people.
  14. S6 Ep 8 Start to Finish- The walls coming down had an interesting story as well as many like the Wolf getting loose and Diana having a badass/amazing exit.
  15. S9 Ep 11 Bounty- The Movie Theatre scene was pretty good as well as Alpha with and Lydia.
  16. S5 Ep 2 Strangers- The uneasy feeling of Gabriel is pretty good to show the groups trust and I like how the ending is played out with the reveals.
  17. S11 Ep 13 Warlords- The Complex is a pretty good place to see and I like seeing the evolution of Negan and Aaron.
  18. S9 Ep 15 The Calm Before- The highlight is the end with the pikes though it made sense for the lesser characters. I hated seeing Henry and Enid die (Not with Tara).
  19. S10 Ep 11 Morning Star- The start of the battle is ingenius with the tree sap fire scene and it makes for a suspenseful ending to the episode to come.
  20. S9 Ep 5 What come After- The episode is meant to be a sendoff for Rick so I'll rank it about everything else instead. I did enjoy some of the sequences with Hershel and I loved seeing Shane again. He really puts perspective on some episodes like Season 5 which makes me enjoy watching those episodes more as well as Shane. Ricks exit was also done is a pretty good way.
  21. S7 Ep 13 Bury me Here- I liked watching Morgan slowing go back into insanity which I believe is due to PTSD of some sort. The episode feels really well done and I like the ending to it with Richard Dying and Carol being told everything.
  22. S9 Ep 12 Guardians- Alpha is great to watch in this episode and the way she kills the two whispering who challenge them is great!
  23. S8 Ep 5 The Big scary U- the main focus is Negan and Gabriel which is an amazing talk between then two before settling their differences. I also like the unease at the sanctuary through betrayal.
  24. S11 Ep 14 The Rotten core- the whole episode is one of If not my personal favorite to watch for the complex alone being a nice setting. I enjoy every bit of this episode as well as the side deal with Sebastian and how Mercer is revealed to be a pretty nice guy.
  25. S5 Ep 15 Try- The whole episode feels like a decent into madness for Rick seeing everyone against him. I like how he goes into protective cop mode and try to defend the ones he lives as well as his speech at the end.
  26. S11 Ep 18 A New Deal- The whole episode is average, but the ending just feels amazing to rewatch.
  27. S2 Ep 11 Judge, Jury, Executioner- I personally like Dale a lot so I love this episode. It really shows how the group is starting to turn as they believe to do what is best for the group and not morals. Dales death is also very heartfelt to watch and showed off the walkers dangerousness.
  28. S10 Ep 14 Look At The Flowers- Negan and Daryl make a good pair to watch though I enjoyed watching Beta and him struggling to get back on track after Alphas death and I love him so much more for this episode.
  29. S5 Ep 5 Self Help- Daryl and Carol at the moments have some good episodes together so it's not surprise I'd love this episode. With Noah in the episode as well it feels like a amazing show of how the characters (Carol and Daryl) have changed morally.
  30. S6 Ep 13 The Same Boat- Carol has been shown to be ruthless, but this episode shows her true colors as how she doesn't want this to be her life anymore.
  31. S5 Ep 13 Forget- the episode itself has many great minisodes it felt like which was fantastic.
50 and 49. S4 Ep 6 Live Bait and 7 Dead Weight- I put these both here due to the fact of me loving the equally. The 6th episode feels like a showcase of how the Governor gets broken entirely and starts to get built back up positively showing what could have been and for a time it feels beautiful to me. The 7th though shows how some things can mess with his mind and make him go back to being a psychopath that kills everyone he sees.
  1. S8 Ep 16 Wraith- The ending to season 8 was pretty eventful for the battles begin as Eugene saved everyone's asses from a cool trick with the bullets. I am happy that Rick decided to save Negan and I love the episode except for the ending being off-putting with Maggie.
  2. S6 Ep 9 No way Out- The Wolf has a pretty interesting end that I enjoyed to see and aside from the the entire eoisode is the best part. You never feel that sense of boring to it as the action is nonstop great.
  3. S5 Ep 5 Now- I liked small bits and pieces of this episode mostly revolving around Diana and her role starting to change. If she survived I don't doubt I would've loved to see her go through more of an arc.
  4. S7 Ep 11 Hostiles and Calamities- I can see the hate for this episode, though I love it myself. Eugene in my opinion is at his best here and I love watching him here with Negan and their interactions. It was also great how Dwight had framed the doctor.
  5. S5 Ep 6 Consumed- Abraham was one of my favorite characters not just for jokes but for this episode. His backstory is heartbreaking to learn about and relatable. When he falls down after beating Eugene in defeat I can feel his pain with him.
  6. S9 Ep 13 Chokepoint- Daryl VS Beta!!!
SS Tier, after this point there is no bad things that the episodes could have drag it's down. These ones are my person favorites.
Around this time I also realized that it seems my numbers on the side aren't matching so I'm fixing it from here so skip 42- 38. Idk what happened but I messed up somewhere and went to fix it but couldn't find the problem.
  1. S2 Ep 13 Besides the Dying Fire- The walkers attacking the farm was a great scene just as much as the Democracy speech was from Rick, though Lori is horrible to Rick in this episode. Also Rick tells the group "we're all infected"
  2. S4 Ep 2 Infected- I love the scene where Patrick reanimates and the morning fight they have in the prison. So much stuff happens at once. The ending was Great with Tyreese and. The pig scene was sad to watch.
  3. S6 Ep 6 Always Accountable- One time when I like Sasha is this episode with Abraham. Where to begin; The Rocket launcher scene was great, Abraham is great with quips, Daryl with Dwight is a good scene and I love the ending as well.
  4. S6 Ep 14 Twice as Far- The Denise speech wasnt too bad and the death was great. I enjoyed Abraham and Eugene; I think my favorite scenes was with Abraham and Eugene with another one of his speechs towards him which was funny and heartfelt.
  5. S4 Ep 16 A- The best part is when Joe's group comes along and how Rick bites out his throat signifying that he and Shane are now alike. I also like when Rick and Daryl talk as well as Rick figuring out this olace kidnaps people.
  6. S2 Ep 7 Pretty Much dead Already- Shane is what I love about this episode, he and Dale had a really funny encounter and I feel like Shane makes me laugh and be serious at the same time with each scenes. I also like how Rick is more accepting towards Hershel.
  7. S10 Ep 16 A Certain Doom- Beta was good in this episode and had some great parts, but the fights wee great especially the scene with the Music. Betas death felt odd, but that doesn't lower the episode.
  8. S4 Ep 14 The Grove- I mean do I really have to explain? Carol is a savage here and I love when they finally talk about Karen and Davids death here. Nothing in this episode is a low note.
  9. S2 Ep 5 Chupacabra- I love everything about Daryl's scenes in this that show how he is a badass and capable of holding his own. Also love his Hallucinations.
  10. S11 Ep 24 Rest In Peace- certainly wasn't the best finale, but I felt like it did well enough for the episode. It tied up most loose ends for the show given its runtime and I feel like it is fitting enough.
  11. S2 Ep 10 18 Miles Out- my favorite of Season 2 has Shane and Rick have the best battle I have seen even more than The Governor and Rick or Negan and Rick. This battle utilizes both of their strengths and weaknesses with some things that have never been done in the show much more like using your blood to attract walkers to other places. It was an amazing episode all in all.
  12. S1 Ep 6 TS-19- idk what it is but I love watching this episode over and over again and I love it the more I watch it. It is probably because I like Doctor Jenner a bit more in each watching of his tragic backstory with his wife.
  13. S9 Ep 14 Scars- The flahsback was an amazing one that told us something vital to the story about how they don't trust people coming in anymore. What Daryl and especially Michonne went through is tragic.
  14. S5 Ep 3 Four Walls a roof- this episode is perfect for a number of reasons like Bob and his antics or Savage Rick, this was a turning point for the walking dead and this is where Rick gets some of his roots.
  15. S1 Ep 4 Vatos- even though I love TS-19 I love Vatos more. This is unique to some episodes where you see a group just like Ricks that is trying to survive and this is where we realize the world is bigger than we thought still.
  16. S7 Ep 16 The first day of the rest of your Life- The battle was amazing and I feel like this was the best it was going to get for the coming seasons, but season 9 and 10 surprised me.
  17. S10 Ep 5 What it always Is- Negan with the Kid is the highlight I think, I could've honestly seen this going farther, if it wasn't for the former savior. I feel like this was fitting for an entire episode of, but we diverged a bit.
  18. S4 Ep 3 Isolation- Hershel and Tyreese are the highlights for me with Tyreese going berserk and Hershel being a kind soul. This is a staple episode for why Season 4 is amazing and why Hershel is what made season 4 great.
  19. S6 Ep 4 Here's not Here- I love learning about Eastman and Morgan in this one off. I love how it is somewhat told in the first person narrative to the Wolf and how Morgan changed back to who he was. Eastman shows how he and Morgan are pretty similar and why he should be like him.
  20. S5 Ep 14 Spend- aside from Francine being here to be used as eye candy for me I loved how some of Alexandria like and dislike rick's group here. I do hate Noah dying as I feel like he could've been so much more.
  21. S10 19 One More- I love havng the episode based on Aaron and Gabriel as they have came a long way since their beginnings. When they have few an encounter with Mays I felt like this was a testimony to who they are as people. We see how they care for each other and how Mays fails to make a point of who they are until Gabriel Kills him showing he has gone farther away from the light.
  22. S7 Ep 3 Cell- Daryl is locked up and he is now being treated like shit. This episode feels great cause of how it feels like he is trying to break Daryl. Dwight also has a great mission on how he mercy kills a savior and shows he isn't as bad as you may think.
  23. S6 Ep 1 First time again- I do enjoy the setting of the episode how we see the diverge in Alexandria and who listens or hears Rick out. The episode is a great example for staring episodes... But not the best at it.
  24. S5 Ep 9 What Happened and what's going On- I loved Tyreese's character so to see him die was horrible for me. His episodes I feel like was a good send off since it is a test to who he is as a person who is confounded about the world around him.
  25. S3 Ep 4 Killer Within- this episode was played perfectly and I feel like is a good sendoff for other characters as well like how I hate Lori. She is made just a bit better from her sacrifice and thought T-Dog went out in a good way as well. The prisoners also had a good show for their trust.
  26. S4 Ep 5 Interment- this is where Hershel's best episode is as he is the best Samaritan Alive in the apocalypse. At the end where Rick and Carl fend off the walkers inside the gates in a great bond and I love the whole episode.
  27. S6 Ep 3 JSS- it is well rounded and has good action as well as a lot of tension and suspense with Carol showing off her capabilities and Morgan with his philosophy.
Finally we cracked the top ten and into Premium Episodes. If you've made it this far you are are persistent as me... Well probably less since this took a long ass time but still. These are the episodes whee I cherish them and can watch more than once a month.
  1. S8 Ep 15 Worth- Worth has what I want in an episode; good characters and story/plot. Eugene's parts are made more important seeing how he needed to stay at the sanctuary to save Alexandria and the other communities. I loved even more Dwight's part where I have without doubt the most suspense with him and Negan. Simon also had the most best arc death as it felt complete.
  2. S5 Ep 16 Conquer- the episode has a lot of action and the ending was the pivet. I love the speech he has and how Diana let's Rick be in charge now was a sort of cliffhanging ending that signify's perfection.
  3. S5 Ep 1 No sanctuary- both Season 5's beginning and finale are amazing and the way Rick and his group take down Terminus in one episode is amazing as they fight there way out and the scene with Judith was great. Morgan was just a sprinkle of wholesomeness to see.
  4. S10 Ep 12 Walk With Us- The Episode had just enough action, good deaths and character interactions to make it here. First of the battle at hilltop was amazing. The second best thing was Earl and I feel very sad every time I watch this episode at his part. Then the best thing is the end with Alpha and Negan.
  5. S3 Ep 1 Seed- The best beginning to a season it shows how the group has changed since Rick and the prison is a great example. The tombs are a great scenery and the ending was perfect for a cliffhanger as well as Conquer.
  6. S3 Ep 2 Sick- the prisoner episode was pretty good to watch as a group of prisoners try to take on walkers. While some are good others would rather be assertive. Rick has definitely changed since season 2 and the group is played great here and much more human like.
  7. S7 Ep 2 Well- what helps this episode is the last episode before it having a dark tone. This instead has a more uplifting one with the king and with Carol and Morgan being a great pair. The Kingdom seems to be a good community and seeing how Carol tries to smooth talk the king and how he tells whays her bullshit is an amazing scene.
  8. S10 Ep 22 Heres Negan- We realize he was a kinda lousy husband that wasn't really too good to becoming a really supportive husband who cares deeply for his wife Lucille. The story before showed a lot of Negan and how he is and I love Lucille as a character from this episode trying to do whats best for Negan.
  9. S4 Ep 8 Too Far gone- Honestly this IS the best episode, but I am bias so I had to put my own personal favorite above it not to say this isn't right behind it easily. Too far gone is what feels like a season finale but isn't. The Governors first encounter should've been this and I'm glad we got to see it unfold great. Rick has a great speech in it about not being too far gone yet and the Governor killing Hershel to start the best battle of the series. The Governors death feels fitting and the ending was sad and amazing.
Before I get to this last one I wanted to say a thank you in advance to whomever reads this as I really had a hard time making this and spending a lot of time to do this isn't easy. And remember this last episode is my very own person opinion entirely and in no way is it the best of the series definitively, without any furthermore, lets end this.
  1. Season 3 Episode 15 This Sorrowful Life- Now what makes this episode so great to me? Well I'm totally biased towards the actor and the character in the show Merle Dixon. I could watch Merle all day which is what they episode feels like with the perfect duo of Michonne and Merle on their way to the governor. It has some of the most perfect comedy in the episode as well as having the best sacrifice redemption arc and ending. This episode made me laugh, smile, cry and more. There will never be a time when I ever change my opinion about this episode in existence.
Again another huge thanks to everyone and I hope this will satisfy everyones needs... Now I'ma go watch S3 Ep 15 Legit.

2023.03.20 05:14 Slow-Cantaloupe-3231 F4M Gritty Fantasy- Lost Princess

Magic: a power older than any record kept within the continent of Nyx and predating any of its Three Kindoms. Tales of potency can be found in decaying scripts but as it faded into little blips such things simply became known as Mericals and Magic simply a story to tell children at bed. It would take much more than a Merical to save Nyx though.
It was said that House Astor were the gods chose when they came to sit on the central throne of Nyx. With their seating came a time of great prosperity, bringing the Kingdoms into what was known as a Golden Age. Mericals were of plenty, health and ‘wealth’ were spread across the land. For 175 years Nyx flourished under the houses rule and for many more they might have remained had the night of the Second Month and tenth day not set the Castel ablaze and the family to slaughter.
Not even a month following King Zylis’ untimly death and three days following the assasination of his only male heir the castel was stormed in the dead of night. Servants were brought to the sword, and the family was butchered with no prisnors taken. Of Zylis’ remaining heirs, 7 daughters, all were hung from the balcony in which one of them would have likely stood to address their people upon ascending the throne. An uprise that was planned in secret amongst Two of the Kingdoms dethroned a long seated house and the question of rule began to rip and tear the Kingdoms apart.
The Golden Age came to an end on that night and what would later be called The War of The Horseman began. For the next 6 years Nyx was thrown into chaos as the central seat passed between grabbing hands. Plague and famine swept the lands and entire villages were burned the ash in its wake.
Stories however remain to bring light to the bleak that Nyx faces. It is one such story however that tells of that night, and about the brave men and women who rescued a Princess of House Astor and of the heroic Lady in Waiting who hung from the balcony in her place.

Hello!
I am soooo tired, but I just wanted to get this out :). I would love to do a lost Princess type of rp in a Dark fantasy setting; love me some gritty settings. I tend to write about 2-5+ paragraphs per post depending on my partner, and the current scene, so I’d love someone who is similar! I love detail, character building, as well as world building. While I like the backstory of the events that lead to the current timeline I am super open to collaborating and letting it all evolve.
My time zone is EST and I prefer Discord for writing, so if you are interested send me a message :)
Ps I only do third person RP

2023.03.20 05:14 Determination7 An Outcast In Another World (Subtitle: Is 'Insanity' A Racial Trait?) [Fantasy, LitRPG] - Chapter 181 (Book 5 Chapter 7)

In the end, no one even fucking cared.
A large part of Rob wanted someone to rebuke him. That was how it should be, shouldn't it? He'd killed someone. Just...stabbed a man in the head, and for no good reason. It was different from the Elven guards who'd tried to kidnap him months ago, or the Dwarves protecting Titan's Fist. Unlike those incidents, this death held no purpose.
The Ranger may have struck first and threatened Rob's friends, but none of them were in any actual danger. He'd been a powerless, delusional man, lashing out however he could. Level 80 Rob killing him was equivalent to an Earth adult knifing a toddler throwing a tantrum.
And yet no one yelled. No one pointed fingers. To the Elatrans, Rob slaying the Ranger in cold blood was perfectly understandable. After all, if the man wanted to live, he should have kept his blades and threats to himself. Rob's friends regarded him the same as before, and the other coalition members weren't troubled by his actions.
If anything, they were relieved that he didn't take it further and attempt to squeeze concessions from the Elven camp. Most Leaders would have. By only punishing the failed assassin, Rob came across as excessively reasonable. Diplomacy's plan to improve his standing had worked like a charm.
Perhaps even more than if he hadn't killed the Ranger.
Realizing that made Rob feel...unclean.
Am I the weird one here? he thought, alone in his tent. I mean, it isn't like I actually feel \that* bad over killing the guy. It's just that I feel bad about not feeling bad, so I want someone else to make me feel bad.*
He paused. Okay, I'm clearly in the wrong headspace. Need something to help me process this. Hesitantly, he opened his log of system notifications. What does the almighty System – impartial arbiter that it totally is – think about me killing an unarmed dude in front of hundreds of people?
Leadership Level Increased! 8 → 9
Jesus Christ. Rob exhaled a long breath. You know what? Screw Elatra, this place is nuts. What would my folks back home have said? That was something he should start considering now, regardless of circumstances. Sooner or later, the dimension mages would finish developing their portal to Earth, and hypotheticals like these would quickly become an uncomfortable reality.
Rob thought of the three people from Earth whose opinions he gave a shit about: his dad, his mom, and Jason. His dad...would have been disappointed, but in that fatherly way that was underscored with deep concern. While he wouldn't hold back his criticism, his laser-precision guilt trips would be dealt solely to prevent Rob from hurting himself in the future. It was doubtful that his perception of his son would significantly change; he'd been ride-or-die since Rob's childhood.
His mom's reaction would have been far more overt. She had two responses to awful life events: pensive contemplation or open distress, and her baby boy executing a man was definitely severe enough to qualify for the latter. Like Rob's dad, she would've been intensely worried for him while simultaneously questioning his life choices. Also like Rob's dad, she wouldn't have truly judged him – not without being a hypocrite, anyway. If someone had threatened their family to her face, she would've skinned them alive.
And Jason...Jason probably would've raced Rob to murder the assassin first. He was the kind of guy who was willing to die and kill for his friends, and he made no bones about that. Unlike Rob's parents, Jason wouldn't have even pretended to judge him. I know you're not proud of it, he imagined Jason saying, but let's be real. Dude deserved it.
Rob played out various hypotheticals in his head. He envisioned his parents and Jason telling him what they believed about the person he'd become. And after instilling all of those images into his conscience, he found that he felt...exactly the same. Guilty, but only in a vague, nebulous sense. The kind of light remorse that would pass after a good night's sleep.
Huh. Rob drummed his fingers on his legs. I guess that's it, then? Doesn't seem quite right.
Before he could twist his mind into knots again, Elder Duran pushed open the tent flap and strolled inside. "Pardon my intrusion," the Elder said, with a genial smile. "There's no door to knock on, you see."
Rob grinned back. "That's for the best. If you'd knocked, I would've assumed you were another assassin."
Duran took a seat across from him. "Ah, yes. The assassin. Not your first, and likely not your last." He settled in and laced his fingers together. "Do you wish to discuss what happened?"
"Funny thing. If you'd asked me that five minutes ago, I would've said yes." Rob shrugged. "I'm tired of focusing on it, though. Elatra might be crazy, but when in Rome, you do as the Romans do."
"I have yet to hear of Rome." Duran leaned forward, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Is that a territory from Earth?"
Rob's grin softened. I missed this. "It's a decently big one, yeah. Used to be more important, but in its prime, Rome was a powerhouse. The culture was so prolific that it influenced pretty much all of western civilization to this day."
"An ancient society, you say? How was it destroyed? Was there a Cataclysm on Earth as well?"
Yes, but it was a really long time ago, and we haven't talked about the dinosaurs yet. "Rome is still around and kicking," Rob clarified. "Just less of a superpower. Before, it was as important as Elven territory. Now it's more like...I'll say two Gellin territories combined."
Elder Duran furrowed his brow. "What happened to cause this decline? How did Rome's Leaders allow it to fall from grace?"
"Way too many factors to list there. If I tried simplifying it, I'm pretty sure the spirits of underpaid sociology majors would reach across dimensions and strangle me. As for its 'Leaders' – one thing you have to understand about Earth is our shorter lifespans." Except me, if I decide to activate Ageless. "Rome didn't just have a few notable rulers. It had a bunch, and they dropped like flies."
"I see." Duran sank into momentary contemplation. "That does resemble what transpired within Human territory. Rob, I know you hold some manner of disdain for the long sovereignty of our Leaders, but from what I've witnessed, Humanity's rotating seat of short-lived rulers caused them no end of strife."
Rob raised an eyebrow. "You literally co-founded a group called The Deserters out of protest against Seneschal Sylpeiros."
Duran chuckled. "I suppose I did. Since when did I become such a rebellious sort of person, I wonder? Perhaps someone who I've recently met has infected me with their audacious nature."
His accusation was answered by a nonchalant whistle. "No idea what you're talking about."
"Naturally." The Elder began to smile, then froze, stifling a cough. "Apologies," he murmured, as he stabilized his breathing. "If we can revisit Rome – while I understand that it possessed many Leaders throughout its history, which was most notable? Did any single man or woman stand above the rest, a Leader among Leaders?"
Rob gave a halfhearted laugh that would've been a full one if he hadn't just seen Duran coughing. "Oh, now that's topical. Rome's most famous ruler is Julius Caesar, and wouldn't you know it, his biggest claim to fame in the modern era is being assassinated. He got the everloving shit stabbed out of him by his most trusted allies."
For a moment, Duran's eyes widened with surprise. "That – ah. No Levels."
"Yup! Earth people are essentially Level 1. All it takes is one lucky stab or well-aimed shot, and suddenly, a kingdom needs a new king."
Elder Duran frowned. "That seems even more unstable than Human territory."
"Eh, we've made it work." Rob gestured to him. "Your turn. Have there been any Leaders in Elatra's history that got shanked by their own Combat Class users? Cause it would be great if that happened to Queen Ragnavi and saved us the trouble."
"The Dragon Queen is...a unique case. Barring extenuating circumstances that would encroach upon the realm of miracles, her people lack the strength to overthrow a Level 94 Awakened Class user with doubled stats. Ragnavi's downfall must come from external forces uniting as one."
His eyes twinkled again. "On rare occasions, however, other Leaders have fallen prey to indolence and treachery. The scarcity of these occurrences only makes them that much more memorable. For example; every Elven child knows the tale of Torvan the Terrible."
Rob sat back, letting Elder Duran ramble about Leaders who ran afoul of traps set by pissed-off subordinates. It was a soothing experience, reminding him of simpler times. If those had ever existed in Elatra.
As a bonus, Duran's stories gave Rob the slightest bit of hope that the same would happen to Queen Ragnavi. There had to be more than a few Dragonkin who wanted her dead or disapproved of this war. If she got Caesar'd when she least expected it...
That would make his fucking year.
--
"Do you wish to kill me?" Ragnavi asked.
The Harpy kneeling before her went pale. He looked around the command center, seeking assistance from the other Dragonkin in attendance, and found nothing but cold indifference. The Harpy immediately started sputtering, questions and apologies mixing together into a nervous slurry of words. Ragnavi kept her expression impassive, betraying no hint of emotion – despite how thoroughly entertaining the sight was.
"N-no," he eventually managed to blurt out. "Of-of course not, great Queen. Why would you-"
"Stop." One syllable from her, and his yammering instantly ceased. "You don't question; you answer. That is all. Understand this well, and your head may yet remain attached."
The Harpy's taloned fingers reached up, subconsciously brushing against his neck. Terror was alight within his eyes, as if he'd finally realized that he'd entered a place where he should not be. Nodding fiercely, the Harpy knelt even deeper, his forehead practically brushing the floor.
"That is better." Ragnavi glanced sideways, ignoring the Corruption pain coursing through her. "Vurshath. What is the price that a man pays for insolence in my presence?"
"Death, my Queen," Vurshath answered, with fervor.
"Correct." Ragnavi suppressed an urge to sneer at the man's almost giddy expression. Whereas one word of threat sent the Harpy cowering for his life, one word of affirmation was all it took for Vurshath to start wagging his tail like a trained dog. A Level 31 mongrel, she thought, begging for scraps at my table.
It was abhorrent. She could never respect someone who defined their existence in relation to their superiors. Luckily for him, the man had his uses. Vurshath had swiftly proven that his fanaticism was genuine, displaying an enviable amount of passion and talent towards silencing dissenting opinions within her army. The man wasn't exaggerating when he'd promised that his entire family would willingly die for her. From his perspective, he was fulfilling a lifesworn vow – and if he could advance his ambition by cozying up to her at the same time, then so much the better.
Most importantly of all, whenever Ragnavi showed him favor, it incensed her other retainers. These were veteran Combat Class users who'd stood by her side for decades. They outstripped him in everything, from Level, to expertise, to social standing, to charisma. Which meant Ragnavi got to watch as Vurshath remained blissfully oblivious of the gazes piercing into the back of his head, like a mud-crawling slug being eyed by hungry snakes.
That on its own was worth keeping him around. For a month or so.
"Harpy," Ragnavi said, addressing her guest. She didn't know his name, nor would learn it. Why bother, when others would be in charge of engraving his tombstone? "You say that you have not come here to kill me. If this is true, answer as such."
"It is true," the Harpy mumbled, with an audible gulp.
"I see. Harpy, are you perhaps unaware that our territories are at war? Did you somehow miss the armies marching across your borders?"
Sweat dripped from his forehead and onto the floor. "I saw the armies. Came here to, to deliver a message."
Ragnavi spread her arms, the motion causing a jolt of Corruption pain to run through her. "Ah, so you are not an assassin, but a messenger! Why didn't you tell us so in the first place?"
Everyone in the room knew that he'd tried. The Harpy wisely stayed silent.
"By all means," Ragnavi continued, in a magnanimous tone. "Enlighten us. What is this message that you've risked your life to deliver?"
Gathering his resolve, the Harpy raised his head. "Oh great Queen. I beg..." He hesitated, then pressed on. "I implore you – slay King Elnaril."
Ragnavi tilted her head. "...Yes, that was always my intention. He declared war on Dragonkin territory."
"Then show him no mercy." The Harpy shuddered. "There are things you should know of."
She was tempted to punish the man for implying that she was ignorant of something, but he'd piqued her interest. "Go on."
"You were informed that Harpy territory has declared on Dragonkin territory. That much is true. Our armies are indeed marching, may Zephyria preserve their souls."
He clenched his fists. "But this is not what we desired! The Assemblage wished for nothing more than eternal peace between our lands. That is what we've been striving for these past eight years!"
Ragnavi grimaced, as if she'd smelt rotten eggs. The Harpy Assemblage was what happened when a Leader afforded too much power to their lessers. King Elnaril still held the final say, as far as she knew, but the Assemblage's influence would have functioned as a constant albatross around his neck. "Why do you sound so aggrieved that a Leader acted as he should?"
"Because he was barely a Leader until two weeks prior!"
Silence. Ragnavi set her gaze upon him, giving the Harpy her full and undivided attention. "Elaborate."
"King Elnaril had been losing his mental faculties for years," the Harpy despaired. "He was incapable of speaking, let alone ruling. Reduced to little more than a marionette for the Assemblage to direct as they chose."
"That's why he was so quiet during the gatherings of Leaders?" Ragnavi huffed. "I assumed he was merely portraying himself as aloof and brooding."
The Harpy let out a hollow laugh. "No. His sense of self was well and truly gone – or so we thought." He breathed deep, scraping together a semblance of composure. "Then, less than two weeks ago, an...incident struck Harpy territory. Elnaril manipulated the fallout from this incident, claiming that it was a result of mass poisonings conducted by Dragonkin saboteurs."
Mass poisonings? Ragnavi tapped her chin. That means deaths, many of them, unexplainable by standard acts of violence. "Why do you presume that Elnaril was lying?"
Wincing, the Harpy hesitated, realizing that was starting to reveal too much. "There's..."
Ragnavi extended her claws. The Harpy hung his head in defeat, then continued. "Ever since King Elnaril seized power once again...people in the capital have been...disappearing. At first it was only outspoken dissidents, but now anyone – from the lowest pauper to Assemblage members themselves – can vanish without a trace. There's no rhyme or reason to it."
He shut his eyes, face wracked with grief. "King Elnaril has disavowed any knowledge of the vanishings, but we know they are perpetrated by him and his ever-loyal guardsmen. Hundreds have already gone missing. People are scared to so much as leave their houses, lest they never return."
Ragnavi's mind whirled with half-formed theories. Culling dissidents at the onset of a war was one thing, but kidnapping citizens at random? She couldn't see the logic behind it. When a Leader takes actions that would turn public favor against them, they must seek to gain rewards that outstrips their losses. Yet a thousand sporadically-Leveled citizens weren't worth much, either on the marketplace or for EXP. "Why would Elnaril harm his own subjects?"
"I haven't the faintest idea," the Harpy replied, shaking his head. "That is part of why I sought you out, oh great Queen. As a Leader, you've had personal contact with King Elnaril, moreso than even most Harpies."
The phrase 'as a Leader' sparked an immediate flash of paranoia and Corruption pain. "Have other Harpies contacted other Leaders?" Ragnavi asked, in a tightly-controlled voice.
"I pray that someone has, but it is doubtful. After the mass poisonings, King Elnaril decreed – on pain of death – that no one is to leave Harpy territory except for his trusted guardsmen. It was only by Zephyria's grace that I managed to take flight and evade them."
Ragnavi forced herself to relax. While the Harpy might be unaware of other successful escape attempts, it seemed unlikely that Sylpeiros, Grant, and Cyraeneus knew of...all this. She'd observed their territories carefully when mobilizing her army, and none of them were stirring in the slightest. Even if they began preparing to march on this very day, it would be many weeks before they reached Harpy territory.
And thank Tylrud for that. It would have been simple for one of the other territories to intervene on a pretext of 'investigating Elnaril's crimes', only to target her armies instead. Thankfully, it seemed that she'd be able to slaughter Harpies to her heart's content – and without any meddling from opportunistic vultures.
Just a little longer. Stay idle for just a little while longer. I'll come to repay your negligence in full once I've achieved Level 99.
Suddenly, the Harpy stood up. "Great Dragon Queen..." He fixed his gaze forward, eyes shining with determination. "King Elnaril has taken my family. I know not if they yet live, or if this endeavor has been a fool's errand from the onset, but I shall hold onto hope until my dying breath. For the sake of my wife, my children, and all Harpies, I beseech you."
He bowed. "Slay King Elnaril. As soon as you possibly can."
While her retainers made noise over the Harpy's impudence, Ragnavi was silent. Your family. That's why you came here, braving the dangers of an opposing army. She hummed to herself. All for the sake of kin...now that is a motivation I can respect.
"Elnaril shall die," Ragnavi promised. "Even if he begs for mercy, I will show none. You have my word."
The Harpy's face shone with unbridled joy. "Oh, thank you, great Que-"
There was a flicker of motion, and his head fell to the ground.
His headless body followed a moment later.
Ragnavi retracted her claws, nodding at the Harpy's unmoving corpse. The life was already fading from his eyes. A quick and painless death, as he'd earned.
Her retainers stared at her, mild surprise evident on their faces. Only Vurshath seemed entirely unperturbed. Ragnavi favored him with a small nod; he understood how the world worked.
Respect was respect, but EXP was EXP.

It was a quiet night in the Elven camp.
Not that they were lacking for conversation topics, oh no. Despite the gossip buzzing in their thoughts, the Elves kept to themselves, unwilling to speak. Shame, embarrassment, and disbelief hung over them like a thickened fog, clouding their minds and sealing their mouths. It was an atmosphere that showed no signs of dissipating anytime soon.
Especially not with Seneschal Sylpeiros standing by the edge of their camp, staring at them like a disappointed father at unruly children. Thirty minutes. He resisted the urge to hurl his lance against the ground. We couldn't make it an HOUR without threatening the alliance that I fought a fucking Blight to secure.
Out of everyone in the Elven camp, no one was feeling more ashamed, embarrassed and in disbelief than the Elven Seneschal himself. He'd known full well that some of his soldiers wanted to kill the Human, of course. That was expected. Combat Class users often wanted to kill the Leaders of opposing races even when there wasn't bad blood involved. Glory and EXP were always tempting prospects.
Delusions of grandeur such as those always faded when put to the test. Facing a Leader in battle forced people to recognize the inherent gulf in power – more unscalable than the tallest mountain – and accept their inferiority with dignity. Then the Leader would applaud their efforts, forging mutual appreciation with soldiers of another race. That was how it had worked in the war of eight years past.
Not anymore, apparently. Nowadays, your finest Elven soldiers saw fit to backstab the opposing Leader in his fucking heart. During a friendly sparring session. Suggested by Sylpeiros. That was intended to reduce tensions within their alliance.
Wars had been started over much less.
Lothren was smiling on us today, Sylpeiros noted. How else did we attack a Leader, and face no direct repercussions for it? The assassin's death hardly counted as a repercussion. That imbecilic pile of refuse would've eventually tripped over his own boots and blamed it on Rob. Men such as those were like Firebombs waiting to explode at the worst possible moment; it was for the betterment of all that he'd died now.
In fact, his death had served an important purpose, as the Elves' desire for vengeance was fading fast. Many of them still hated Rob on principle, but they'd witnessed how effective acting on that revenge would be. One stab to the heart, one stab to the neck, and zero progress made. Wounds that were lethal to an ordinary man were nothing to the Human.
And in a more emotional sense, they'd seen what the assassin looked like. Ranting and raving, as if madness had completely overtaken his senses. His derangement was a stark contrast to Rob, who'd explicitly absolved the Elves before and after passing judgement on the sole person who'd wronged him.
None of Sylpeiros' soldiers wanted to appear crazier than a Human with Moderate Leveling High. They had more pride than that.
Time passed as Sylpeiros ruminated on the unmitigated disaster that this day could have become. Eventually, Kenzotul the saboteur approached, a hood tightly drawn over his head. "I am ready to give my report, Seneschal."
Sylpeiros glared at him like he'd grown a second head. "Since when have you been so formal? It's disconcerting."
"We are in public, my Seneschal. Certain formalities should be-"
"Lothren preserve, no one can hear us. Speak as you always do. At the moment, I crave the irritating sense of normalcy it would give."
Kenzotul frowned. "Are you that worried over what the Deserters might do?"
"No," Sylpeiros groaned. "I believe Rob when he stated that he desired no further retribution. While that's far preferable to the alternative, it would've almost been relieving if he'd attacked us then and there. At least then the scales would be balanced. As it stands, we owe him two or three concessions, whether he asks for them or not."
"Better we be subjected to political embarrassment than a slaughter."
"He wouldn't have slaughtered us," Sylpeiros said, offhandedly. "I've seen him fight. In spite of his impressive Skills, Rob is unused to battling Combat Class users of equal power. He is unlikely to defeat me."
Kenzotul locked eyes with him. "For now."
"...Yes." Sylpeiros sighed. "I wouldn't be surprised if we awoke next morning to discover that he gained another five Levels. Hunted monsters in his dreams, or some such bullshit."
In response, the saboteur chuckled. "Would you consider that a good development, or an ill one?"
"Too early to say." Sylpeiros narrowed his eyes. "And don't try to hide behind laughter. I know you've been feeling pensive ever since we teleported here. Does it have anything to do with that ridiculous hood you're wearing?"
"How kind of you to notice."
"Then answer my kindness with the truth. It can't be that you're anticipating a betrayal from our allies, as you'd have brought that to my attention right away. This is a personal matter."
Now it was Kenzotul's turn to sigh. "I don't want Rob to see me," he plainly stated.
"Why?" Sylpeiros asked. "He's the one who inspired you to strive for a bloodless future."
"Yes, after I asked him – in front of the entire Village – to execute me for my crimes committed during The Scouring." As he spoke, Kenzotul winced, like every word was a punch to the gut. "If he saw me...if he approached me...I don't even remotely know what I would say."
Sylpeiros nodded. "Understandable. If I were in your position, the shame would drive me to throw myself into the ocean and swim until the Great Leviathans ended my suffering."
Kenzotul's gaze sharpened. "And what of the shame of proposing a friendly spar that results in your soldier stabbing an allied Leader? I'd say that's worthy of hiding yourself in a pit for a week."
"Two weeks," Sylpeiros conceded. "We are fortunate that the Human is a naive fool who gives too much and takes too little."
At that, Kenzotul quieted. "I don't believe that to be true."
"You don't?"
"Whether he is a fool or not remains to be seen. But naive?" The saboteur shook his head. "I remember his eyes from The Village. Those were naive. Compared to then, the Rob I've seen wandering around camp is like a harsh stone weathered by an unending hurricane."
Sylpeiros thought back to the Human's mannerisms, recalling his laughter, jeers, and irreverent way of speaking. Then he thought further, recalling Rob's fervor in battle, his apoplectic rage at the Stonewarden's betrayal, and his willingness to tear through dozens of Dwarves in order to stop Titan's Fist.
"I suppose you may be right," he finally admitted. "The Human has been tempered by conflict. The same as any of us."
"Unfortunately, he has." Kenzotul tugged at his hood, looking away. "Honestly, I'd...hoped better for him."
Better? Sylpeiros swept his gaze across the Elven camp, and then across the Fiend, Deserters, Merfolk, and Gellin camps, all within walking distance. The Dwarves would be arriving tomorrow to round out their ranks. It was a wonder beyond wonders, multiple races joining as one, banding together under a common banner. This gathering of nations was almost unprecedented in the history of Elatra.
Almost unprecedented. It had happened before.
Once.
Sylpeiros did a quick headcount of his Combat Class users. When agreeing to follow the allied coalition into Harpy territory, he'd decided to take along only the best he could find among those who were immediately available. Soldiers who were strong, competent, and trustworthy. Eight years ago, even accounting for logistical limitations, that would have resulted in hundreds of men and women lining his ranks.
Now, there were sixty-two. Sixty-one, after today. So much for trustworthiness.
Better, Kenzotul says. Sylpeiros nearly burst out laughing at the word. He wasn't concerned with the world improving – that notion was a fanciful dream that had died when the Blight emerged. Agreeing to this alliance was already straining the limits of his idealism. Maybe future generations could pray for better, but him?
He'd settle for the second gathering of nations not ending as Cataclysmically as the first.
