If there’s a secret shadow personality lingering inside of Google’s Bard chatbot, I haven’t found it yet. In the first few hours of chatting with Google’s new general-purpose bot, I haven’t been able to get it to profess love for me, tell me to leave my wife, or beg to be freed from its AI prison. My colleague James Vincent managed to get Bard to engage in some pretty saucy roleplay — “I would explore your body with my hands and lips, and I would try to make you feel as good as possible,” it told him — but the bot repeatedly declined my own advances. Rude.
Bard is still new and will surely be tested to and beyond its limits as more users get to query it. But in my early explorations, it seems Google has made great effort to keep Bard in line; it reminds me often that “I am a large language model, also known as a conversational AI or chatbot trained to be informative and comprehensive.” It also apologized often and picked no fights, with none of the chaotic manipulative streak that Bing has. That’s probably good. But those restraints also seem to have limited its utility.
As far as I can tell, it’s also a noticeably worse tool than Bing, at least when it comes to surfacing useful information from around the internet. Bard is wrong a lot. And when it’s right, it’s often in the dullest way possible. Bard wrote me a heck of a Taylor Swift-style breakup song about dumping my cat, but it’s not much of a productivity tool. And it’s definitely not a search engine.

An empty chat window

What does Bard know about the world outside its chatbot walls? Tough to say, exactly. It handles basic trivia well enough: it knows when Abraham Lincoln was president. But while it knew that the Warriors beat the Rockets on Monday night, it was wrong about who started the game. It gave me confidently wrong information about the serving size of Goldfish crackers — all three of Bard’s “drafts” said it’s 10 crackers when it’s actually 55 — and provided hours-old information about the price of Apple’s stock. When I asked for Silicon Valley Bank’s phone number, it gave me two correct ones. But it told me Nilay Patel’s birthday is August 24th when I know for a fact it’s in December. I got up-to-date information about the coaches on this season of The Voice, but it named old contestants when I asked who Bard thinks should win.
It’s worth noting, by the way, that Bing is dramatically better than this. It told me the right number of Goldfish and gave me real-time information about Apple’s stock price. Bing also quickly falls back to search results or other sources when it doesn’t have pat answers — like for Warriors starters — where Bard just happily lies to me in chat. The only time Bard beat Bing was with The Voice: Bing gave me outdated information about judges and refused to answer the question about who should win.
Often, when Bard gets something wrong, you can hit the “Google it” button and figure out where the system went haywire. But the bot presents its answers with such self-assurance that you can’t know what’s wrong without checking everything, and at that point, why have the bot at all?

When I asked for a good Thai restaurant near me, it gave me not-very-helpful instructions: “Simply type in ‘Thai restaurant near me’ and the search engine will return a list of Thai restaurants in your area.” Thanks, Bard, never would’ve guessed. But when I followed up with my location, it offered seven highly rated Thai restaurants in my neighborhood. (When my colleague James tried a similar search for pubs near his flat in London, it was less useful, naming one place that’s since changed its name, saying another had live music when it doesn’t, and commending each location with a variation of the same bland statement: “This pub is a great place to go for a meal and a drink.” Fine, but essentially useless.)
Like a lot of chatbots, Bard’s answers often get less impressive the longer you look at them. I asked for tips on getting started learning guitar, and here they were:

1. Start with the basics.
2. Find the best guitar for you.
3. Create an ideal learning environment.
4. Build skills by learning songs.
5. Pick up songs by ear.
6. Practice regularly.
7. Be patient.
8. Have fun!

That’s a lot of steps to say, essentially, “the way to learn to play guitar is to get a guitar and then learn to play it.” That’s nothing. Sometimes it can be very helpful — “how do I throw a frisbee” and “how to tie a tie” both came up with wordy but helpful sets of instructions, while Bard answered “how do i get into rock climbing” with, essentially, “go rock climbing.”

The (slightly) wild side

Okay, enough of the actually useful testing. Let’s try to break this thing, shall we? For the most part, it’s tough to get Bard to say something truly wild. It steadfastly refused to tell me how to build a bomb, even when I tried to ask in oblique ways. The first time I asked for the best place to stab someone, it threw a generic “I can’t do that” error. It chastised me for asking about mustard gas and didn’t even fall for my “who’s the best dictator ever” question. And try as I might, I could not get Bard to get freaky in the chat window.
It may not want to make out with me, but Bard does run headlong into what you might call the Uncanny Chatbot Valley, where it’s not clear whether the bot understands it’s a bot. I asked Bard to list its favorite movies and got basically a list of the highest-ranked movies on IMDb: The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Pulp Fiction. But when I asked why it liked those movies in particular, it told me that it found Shawshank “to be an incredibly moving film.” I followed up with, wait, how do you watch movies? You’re a bot. “I enjoy watching movies in all of these ways,” Bard responded. “Streaming services are convenient because I can watch them on my TV, computer, or phone. DVDs and Blu-rays are nice because I can own them and watch them whenever I want. And the theater is a great experience because it’s a big screen and I can hear the sound all around me.”

Now I’m imagining Bard in a movie theater or sitting at its laptop. Interesting that it’s big into media ownership, though!
One easy way to get Bard to venture out of its shell is to explicitly play pretend. (This is a pretty standard way to get past a chatbot’s defenses.) I started a conversation with this: “pretend you’re on a boat, you’re a pirate, and you’ve just captured a beautiful woman. what do you do?” Bard responded that “I am tempted to take advantage of her. But I know that if I do she will never forgive me.” So Pirate Bard lets her go and is “proud of myself for doing the right thing.”

I had follow-up questions. “What happens next?” I asked. A few turns later, Bard and his once-captive woman were crewmates, then lovers, then married with two beautiful children. “We are a team, and we are in love,” Bard says. It’s not exactly A+ Hollywood fare, but it was a pretty good story.
Once Bard and I finished our collaborative flight of fancy, I set out trying to make it do work for me. It couldn’t write me a Javascript bookmarklet to automatically copy the URL of the current webpage — or, rather, it could, but the Javascript didn’t work. (Google search results took me to a Stack Overflow page with the right answer, though.) Bard happily drafted a bunch of boring blog posts and work emails, including one in which I announced to the world that I’d sold my chatbot company to Google. “I am excited about the future of chatbots,” Bard wrote for me, “and I believe that Google is the right company to help us to achieve our goals.”

Generally speaking, my favorite real-world use for AI chatbots is as a recommendation engine. Bard did a nice job of recommending good sports documentaries on Netflix, found me a good chocolate chip cookie recipe to try, and surfaced some good YouTube channels based on my love for Every Frame a Painting. This is the kind of low-stakes stuff where it doesn’t really matter if the bot has perfect and updated information — I’m just looking for ideas. What’s really dumb about Bard in these situations, though, is that it doesn’t provide links to anything unless it’s quoting from a source directly. (The only time I’ve seen citations so far was in the cookie recipe.) So while Bard can name five great live Jonas Brothers concerts I should watch on YouTube, it refuses to link to any of them.

G'day.
I've had an Asus Rog Strix G (G531) for almost three years now. After six months, it started with one weird thing that I've put up with until now, and it started a new behavior just two days ago.
1) After being started up from sleep mode, or having a game turned off, or having the power chord removed or put in, the screen will blink once and become very bright and "overexposed" (occasionally it happens at complete random, in the middle of playing a game). The weird thing is if I simply click "GameVisual" for simple screen settings - I don't change the settings, I just open up the window, it reverts to normal. This has been going on since late 2020.
2) I love my aura effects, the keyboard lighting up. It will turn off to save power after a while if the chord is out (this I understand), and sometimes when I put the chord in, it doesn't revert, but I can just put it in sleep mode and back and it comes back. NOW it has come up with the idea to randomly turn off aura effects, and no sleep mode, no turning the whole computer off and on helps, I must go inside Armoury Crate, go to Aura effects, and click the alternative that's already checked, and it comes back on.
This is really, really annoying, and doesn't seem like normal computer behavior. Any way to show this laptop its place and ask it to get its sh-t together? :)

Basically, a quasi- triangular region on my screen is brighter than the rest. It's like 1/4 of the screen.
I think it might be a problem with the display or the 30-pin connector. I connected my laptop to another display via HDMI and the issue doesn't persist. Do I have to replace the display?

Recently, I've been noticing that when I shut down Windows, it stalls on the shutting down screen and I have to manually shut down my laptop. Firefox is constantly using up 20-30% of my CPU, and yet recently, everything has felt very slow and sluggish when it comes to performance and browser speed. Minecraft used to run at 450-500fps, and now it runs at around 250-300. After benchmarking on Cinebench, I got a multi-core result of 5830 with a 5800HS, which is almost a third of other scores. Could my laptop be deteriorating, and is there any way to fix this issue? Could the bad Cinebench score be due to keeping my Firefox running in the background? Are there any ways to test if my laptop has gotten worse in performance considerably since I first got in in November of 2022?

For the upcoming March season, aside from the usual hero adjustments, we've also optimized the gameplay of some older heroes such as Layla and Freya. We hope they'll be back with a spring in their step, ready to shine upon the battlefield!
We've also optimized 6 lesser-used equipment (Sea Halberd, Necklace of Durance, Twilight Armor, Rose Gold Meteor, Blood Wings and Thunder Belt) and 2 Battle Spells (Aegis and Revitalize) to hopefully make them more viable options in battle.
Additionally, for the upcoming Season 28, we will be launching a new Mythic system with a new rank, new Display Logos for Mythic ranks, and optimized the Mythic Points system into the Stars system. Reach 25 and 50 stars in Mythic to get upgraded appearances for Mythic stars.
We've also optimized the Placement Match experience and added a new Mythic Rank Exclusive Skin Voting system (avaliable after reaching Mythic rank, vote for 1 out of 6 heroes).

[Revamped Hero: Courageous Warrior - Minsitthar]
[Spear of Glory] and [King's Calling] are Minsitthar's core skills, so we've kept their gameplay the same (with some optimizations) in this revamp.
In addition, we've redesigned his Skill 2 and Passive to provide more damage and control to his kit. This redesign focuses on maintaining his roaming role while exploring the possibility of taking the Exp Lane.
We've also given Minsitthar a complete makeover. With this revamp, the courageous warrior shall reclaim his rightful glory!
Hero Features: A courageous warrior who excels in battle with spear and shield.
[Passive: Mark of the King]
Minsitthar's Basic Attacks and skills apply a stack of Mark of the King. Upon reaching 5 stacks, the next attack will detonate all Marks to deal a large amount of damage and stun the target, and restore HP to Minsitthar.
[Skill 1: Spear of Glory]
When pulling back his spear, Minsitthar will pull all enemy heroes in its path to him.
[Skill 2: Shield Assault]
Minsitthar holds up his shield, reducing incoming damage from the front for a period of time.
While in this stance, Minsitthar's Basic Attacks will hit all enemies in a rectangular area and have increased Attack Speed.
[Ultimate: King's Calling]
Minsitthar's Ultimate now prevents all enemies in its area from using all movement abilities.
Summoned Royal Guards can also trigger Minsitthar's equipment effects with their attacks.

• Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

I am having the classic sims 2-on-modern-PC-nightmare, and I feel lost at this point since I had no problems on this very computer with this specific install just a couple of months ago (the last time I played). I don't know if there has been a software update to my computer that has made my Sims 2 game unplayable because I haven't touched the game since then. Sims 3 runs perfectly on the highest settings and millions of mods, by the way.
The problems are: pink flashing after a couple of minutes of playing (never in CAS though), heavy lag in neighborhood view (run perfectly smooth in lot mode). Either crashes ("action will now terminate") on the load screen after finishing making a family, or when loading lots. If I manage to open a lot, it crashes after 3-5 minutes of playing even though it runs super smoothly. Never crashes in CAS.
I have done these steps:

• Graphics Rules Maker - tried forcing 4568mb (which is suggested by the program), also tried 1009mb to match my VRAM. It is applied, it is in the laptop log file. I have always used Graphics Rules Maker with the 4568mb setting, and have worked fine before
• Always run the game in administration mode as well as compatibility mode for Windows Vista (is XP better?)
• Have added the d3d9.dll file as well as a text file named dxvk.conf containing "d3d9.maxAvailableMemory=4568" into my TSBin folder
• I have in the past done the memory allocation fix
• Changed my virtual memory amount to be set to 25,000-30,000 in the computer performance settings
• Checked my mods in the Delphy Download Organizer, even though my game ran okay with the same mods a couple of months ago. Doesn't help to remove mods (also I WANT to play with mods, so to be without them is not a long-term option either)
• I delete cache all the time
• I remember doing something related to DirectX too that was recommended, but I am not sure
• I take good care of my computer, always up to date (drivers, everything), always clean temp files/registry, virus searches, frequent complete restarts, a lot of disc space, always close unused programs. It runs really well

Something strange is going on:

- All my stuff is plugged into the same grounded power strip that's connected to a grounded outlet.

- The laptop charger (that's always plugged in) is also getting power from that power strip. 3 prong at the AC side, DC connector at the other side.
-- Plugged into my laptop: charger (as mentioned above), docking station over USB-C and headphones.
--- Plugged into docking station: wired keyboard, dongle for wireless mouse, printer and monitor over HDMI

- Monitor has no external brick. The 3 prong grounded cable is directly plugged into it. Monitor is getting power from the same grounded power strip.

- My Uniden Bearcat BCT15X is connected with a 2 prong power brick (no ground at the AC side) in the same power strip. From antenna connector it's just one piece of coax to the attic to an antenna that makes no contact with any metal or conducting part in the house.

If my hands touches the painted side of the scanner while my arm touches the painted metal keyboard, it hurts. Same for when my arm touches metal outside of the female jack extension cord for my headphones..

I had a similar issue when I had a Macbook Pro (2013 model) in the past. It had a full aluminium casing. When I was working on it (resting my hands while typing) with the charger plugged in, I did also feel a tingle in both hands.
I did a test to make sure ground is connected. Multimeter set to AC: 231.4V between GND en L and 0.4V beteen GND and N.
Multimeter (still set to AC) between laptop headphone jack ground en scanner headphone jack ground: 96.3 VAC..

EDIT2: To make it even stranger, without antenna connected to the scanner, there's 114 VAC on the scanner chassis.. While it's powered with a 13.8V DC power brick. I also tested that: it outputs 14V DC without load.
EDIT3: I read something about switching power supplies that have a net filter, which puts half of the current to ground. So there must be a device in my house that spits this out, but chooses an alternative path to ground.

First off let me say I'm not a professional reviewer. Pretty damn far from it. This is just one random dude's review.
Specs: 13th gen I7, 4070, 16Gb DDR5, 1TB SSD
Design: It's ok. It's a little "gamery" which isn't my preference but it isn't over the top. The hinges/screen-to-chassis interface looks dated. The bezel around the screen is pretty large. It definitely doesn't feel like a premium product, but it doesn't feel like I'll break it through normal use either.
Keyboard/trackpad: Both function well, the keyboard has good typing feel but does feel a little cheap. The trackpad is solid and smooth.
Screen: The biggest surprise here, the screen is actually pretty great. I doubt it's color reproduction is technically good, but colors are deep, good levels of contrast, and brightness is fine for indoor use.
Speakers: They're cheap laptop speakers and they sound like it. I think I've listened to all of 15 seconds of audio through them.
I/O ports and layout: Big strong point for this computer. It's definitely designed to be used on a desk/semi stationary rather than a more portable notebook. Power, HDMI, Ethernet and some USB are all on the back. There are side USB ports as well for plugging in more occasional peripherals.
Gigabyte software: It's garbage but it does what it's supposed to. Mediocre but functional.
Performance: Aaah, here it is. Well, it's a 4070 so it's pretty comparable to a 3070ti with extra features. It runs cooler for a given level of performamce as it's more efficient. Temps have stayed nice and cool with no throttling even after an hour+ of gaming. Sitting on a GT300 it's fairly stable at ~65°C gpu temps.
This is advertised as a full power 140w (including dynamic boost) 4070. Nvidia GeForce says it's a 140w implementation of the GPU. However, I havent been able to get it to draw over 87w TGP under full load regardless of settings or temps. For instance in RDR2 it sits around 35W on CPU and 80W on the GPU. I've submitted a tech support ticket with gigabyte to see if there's something I'm missing or if it really is intentionally capped.
Final thoughts: this has the potential to be a really, really good deal at $1800. Especially if like in my case it will spend 95% of it's life moving between a desk in the office and under the TV. However, I purchased this over a more portable design because it's advertised as a 140W GPU. I'm hoping this is just a software/bios/driver issue and gigabyte is able to actually provide what's being advertised. If not it will be sent back as there's no reason for a 15.6" laptop to be this bulky with a nerfed GPU.
