Hi everyone,
I am potentially transferring from an M.Sc. to a PhD this fall. This may be a silly question, but do PhD students ever get an opportunity to take a summer off? Obviously not every summer, but maybe even just once?
Long story short, I spent the summer between my undergrad and master's living and working in a mountain town and I absolutely loved it. It's not a sustainable life long-term, but I'd love to go back even for one more summer and do it again. If I enter this PhD, I you think I would ever be able to take one summer off from school to go do something like that? Or once you start your PhD are you locked in year-round until it's finished?
I love grad school and I really want a PhD. But I also want to see the world and have adventures while I'm in my 20s, you know? TIA for any advice!

Has anyone had experience dealing with Progressive insurance and replacing a windshield at a SC? They recommend Safelite (they have some kind of a relationship with them apparently) but Safelite was gonna charge me $405 for an OEM windshield, in addition to $1,500 that the insurance would cover. I set up an appointment with Tesla and it's under $1,200 for everything (assuming OEM windshield). From talking to a few customer service reps at Progressive, I would pay for that and then get reimbursed, vs Safelite dealing directly with Progressive. It's unreal how much Safelite charges. Just hoping Progressive doesn't stick me with a $405 bill after the fact.

I'm hoping someone can provide some advice regarding the health of my cat. We have been visiting our local vet practice since early March but the cat's health is quickly deteriorating, and they still don't know what's wrong. So far we have spent around £1000 and will struggle to pay much more. We have no insurance as we were meant to relocate abroad in the next month.
Apologies for the lengthy post, I hope someone can look at the below and have any advice at hand. Thank you in advance
Context pre 03/03/2023:
- Cat n1: Healthy domestic short-hair male cat, 2.5 yo, small size - weight always around 3.7/3.8 kg, seen by the local vet once a year for health check, there has never been any concern. Indoor only since November 2022.
- Cat n2: In November 2022, we adopted another stray cat that was always visiting our garden. We took him to the vet to get neutered, vaccinated, FeLV - FIV negative
- Cat n1 hasn't gotten along with cat n2 and has experienced stress symptoms. Around end of Feb 2023 we started noticing very little eye discharge. Started eating less but was always eager to have treats and wet food. As we were due to travel in April, we booked and appointment with the vet for the annual vaccination booster and rabies vaccination for cat n2
First Appointment: 03/03/23
- Communicated to the vet general change of behaviour of the cat - more lethargic, eats less, eye discharge.
- Weight Recorded: 3.20 kgs - lost 500g
- Tests carried out: blood profile inhouse vetscan comprehensive diagnostic (abaxis), blood profile inhouse add-on haematology
- Vet comments: BAR in consult room Dehydrated 4% mm pink and moist C/P ausc NAD abd palpatio NAD T: 39.2 Lost 500gr since last seen! BCS 2/5 underweight. Advised no vacc today. Rec blood test as first step of diagnostic. Estimate given. O happy to proceed. Bloods biochem WNL borderline leucoytosis O elected abs due to hyperthermia. O also elected FeLV-FIV inhouse test Recheck in one month for weigth check 0.32 * convenia 80mg/ml injection (10ml vial) per ml (p) 1.00 * blood profile inhouse snap fiv/ felv combo (idexx int)& FeLV - FIV negative
Aftermath:
- I found strange that the eye discharge wasn't addressed.
- the vet stated that it is common to have urinary tract infections (however, I'm not sure he had any symptoms of it)
- after convenia injection cat refused food and lost more weight
- I contacted the practice but never received a callback, tried to call them a few time but always received rude response that the vet would call back when they had time. Call never received but cat somehow started eating again. However, very weak, very lethargic.
- I eventually managed to get a follow-up appointment on 21/03/23
Second appointment: 21/03/23
I'm leaving the clinical notes below. I again stressed about the discharge in the eyes, but this hasn't really been addressed.
Weight Recorded: 3.02 kgs 1.00 * consult 3.00 * mirtazapine (summit) 2mg tabs (100pk) per tab Dosage Line 1: Dose ONE tablet EVERY OTHER DAY by mouth Dosage Line 2: APPETITE STIMULANT Communication: Document Non-Licensed Drug Consent Dog or Cat Communication: BSAVA Client Information Leaflet Mirtazapine 1.00 * faecal profile 1: parasitology and culture and sensitivity (lab services)(fp1)^ 4.00 * rcvhn feline gi kitten mousse 195g (pk12) each Reason: ghc Hx: EDUF fine, no v/d/c/s. OR they will move to Italy on 4th of April and they need AHC on 1st of April. OR he started coughing and noticed dc on eyes. OR he is eating fine now but wet food more than dry food. OR after they adopted other cat, Pisca's problem is started. OR they are a bit concern about AHC because he is still losing weight and he is not fully normal. CE: BAR, losing weight.Eyes, ears, skin NAD. No LN enlargement. No tartars, teeth fine, mild gingivitis. Hydration fine. MM pink and moist, CRT <2. HR 144, no murmurs, c/p ausc. fine. Abd.palp fine. Pulses strong. T:38. Musculoskelatal examination is fine. Noticed small amount of dc on eyes(white, sticky). Adv ddx: parasite, hairball, metabolic, infectious, stress, mass, lymphoma etc Adv 1 xrays, one more haem and meds 2 poo sample, food change, mirtazapine to encourage him to eat more dry food. O elected 2 because of cost issue. Adv any concerns or other signs,come sooner. After results are come back, I will call and inform you for trt. Adv kitten food rather than normal food and wet food. O understands and happy with the plan.
Aftermath:
- mirtazapine seems to have adverse effect on the cat. Extreme lethargy, tremors, upset vocal sounds (we thought he was going to die). He seems to get better when he's off it, vet says this is not possible, and will prescribe to take every day instead of every other day
- we are still waiting for the fecal test results
- worth noting that the cat has no issues going to the toilet. Poo is solid and looks brown and healthy
- as we are concerned, we book another appointment on 27/03/23
Third Appointment: 27/03/23
3.00 * mirtazapine (summit) 2mg tabs (100pk) per tab Dosage Line 1: Dose ONE tablet ONCE daily by mouth Dosage Line 2: APPETITE STIMULANT Spoke the O on the phone and OR his eye dc is slightly yellow and he is not totally well. They gave mirtazapine just on wed and saturday. On that days, he was fine but the following day he was unwell. Adv to O see him to check weight and see eyes and happy to dispense more meds but this time should be given everyday. O happy with plan and will come consultation this afternoon.

Fluorescein + and dispense meds for L eye but adv regarding his weak and poor condition to check his haem and sc fluids today. O agree and happy to go for it. Adv this problem could be life threatening condition and related to ddx: viral, long term bacterail infection, parasite(blood or faecel), mass, tumoral problem etc Bloods: WBC 3.23 (5.5-19.5) NEU 1.4( 2.5-14) PLT 104(300-800) Adv this blood result are not normal and ddx: viral, long term bacterail infection, parasite(blood or faecel), mass, tumoral problem etc Adv and strongly rec hospitalise him and do more investigation. O understands but cant afford atm. Adv until poo results come back, keep him hand feeding, more warm, use multivitamin and lysine and use kitten food for him. O understands and will do
Aftermath:
- I didn't want to hospitalise him due both to costs and the stress that would provoke him
- worth noting that I did not refuse further investigation, only the hospitalisation. Not sure why the notes say I have refused both. I have emailed the practice on the matter and awaiting reply (they are very slow and often careless)
- I don't trust fully these vets - worth noting that the cat is male, and after 2 years of visiting the practice regularly, they still get confused and address him as a female
- I'm currently syringe feeding the cat, with added lysine and vitamins. His conditions are stable but very poor
- I'm still waiting for the fecal results, I have emailed the practice this morning and awaiting reply
- We are seeing another vet this Saturday for the health certificate for travel. I doubt he's fit to travel but going as I want a second opinion
My thoughts
- I feel the cat was generally healthy except for the eye discharge. I promptly brought him to the practice for this reason, but it seems to have been ignored. Why could that be?
- Why an antibiotic was prescribed with the suspect of a urinary infection, even if there were no apparent symptoms?
- I feel the cat's health has seriously deteriorated since taking the antibiotic, and the anti-depressant after. I know that correlation does not imply causation and I'm not a doctor.
- Can antibiotics jeopardise someone's immune system? In three weeks the cat has lost all is WBC
- I cannot say whether the cat will survive, I am providing food and fluids every hour but he generally looks very weak, it's heart breaking and I don't know what to do
- What do you think should be the next steps?

only writing this post to shed light on lululemons new pricing strategy. [to be clear: i am not mad or sad about this, nor do i care or am affected by discount changes, the point of this post is to educate and for discussion]
last week i shared a post that showed how lululemon effectively raised their full price items 25%, in accordance with the removal of sweat collective's wmtm discount, which essentially means all clothing on wmtm is actually lululemons full price. my suspicion was they did this so SC thinks they are getting a discount on full price items, when they arent, the price was just raised 25%, and then the wmtm discount is removed, so they essentially are just in the same boat as everyone else.
this weeks wmtm proved this to be true.
as weve seen, lululemon is taking off a lot of items from wmtm that are deeply discounted and raising prices, ive seen this 3x with items ive bought or have had in my cart (so if you want something on deep sale like 50% off, you better get it now, unless you live near an outlet)
new sale this week shows even HIGHER sales prices than as recent as last week. heres an example:
hotty hot shorts are $68. new sale is $54. previous sale is $49. previous sale to that was $39.
$54 x 1.25 = $67.5 aka $68.
this is the new norm for the lululemon website wmtm sale [25% decrease only]
itll be interesting to see in the coming months, but i firmly believe (and this sub has shown great posts and examples) that the new sale and deep discounts are only at the outlets. which sucks for those that live no where close to an outlet, but it is what it is. ive literally seen BRAND NEW items discounted at the outlets (like, they came out that day as new arrivals). i dont know what lululemons strategy is around this or where itll get them.
i just wanted to share this because i know a ton of people are upset that the sale "isnt a sale" and the price "isn't that discounted" like it was before. its because the new sale is the real full price, and the new sale is now only effectively discounted 25% which is in alignment with the 25% price increase. theyre loading up wmtm from the store and shipping direct to outlet. the sale IS the outlet.
TLDR:

• if you want a real sale, its now at the outlets.
• lulu wmtm is not the same as it was before, nor will it ever be again.

I feel I royally fucked up and there is no coming back. Typically I see this kind of posts from C and SC, but this time it’s from an SM. I joined 6ish months ago with limited consulting background (most of my experience is in industry) and I guess I did not understand my role fully? Yesterday the PPMDs had the meeting to rate all SMs and below (for bonus, promotion), by chance I passed by the room (which was quite far from our normal space) on my way to a networking coffee and I saw a document projected on the screen with my name solidly at the bottom. I know that format because it’s the same we use to rate associates and consultants. Now I knew I wasn’t performing the same as my peers who have been in the trade their whole life, but man that hurt. And I feel that even those who have not worked with me yet now think that I suck and my reputation is trashed and no one will willingly take me on their project. With some reflection I realize where I dropped the ball, but my concern is that it will take a monstrous effort to demonstrate my value and I may not be given the chance to do that either. I don’t think I will be fired before I hit at least the year mark but now coming to work makes me feel like crap, and I swear all PPMDs have started avoiding me (this may be just me being paranoid lol).
It may sound pathetic coming from an SM but now I feel zero motivation to go on. The feedback I asked for and received has been decent, the usual “you were good but here are few minor tips for the future”.
I think consulting is probably not for me as I dislike putting in extra long hours and my heart into something for a week or two and then never seeing that piece of work again nor benefitting from it. I like to grow my team/work over time and seeing it progressively evolve into something better.
Any of you experienced people have tips on how to save the situation? I was thinking of going to my DGL and another one or two ppmd with whom I have worked and acknowledge that I dropped the ball on this and that and that I did not fully realize what was expected but that I will work better from now on.
I’m also a bit of an introvert and am not good at networking, I literally don’t know how to reach out to some random guy and ask to grab a coffee - like what would we talk about? Am i wasting both people time?
I struggle to understand this world, I am technically quite good but I regularly get ultra loud guys taking credit for my work or not letting me have my say in stuff I could contribute if only i had few quiet minutes to think about it.
