The sensible turbodiesel engine was somewhat out of kilter with the racy looks of this low-slung coupé as the car’s athletic shape seemed to call for high-revving petrol power. But that’s not to say the BMW 220d Coupe M Sport is deficient in the performance department.

The four-cylinder 2.0 turbodiesel engine has been a stalwart in BMW’s range, powering several of its larger models with verve and efficiency, and its 140kW and 400Nm feel satisfyingly lively in the light and compact 2 Series.

The respectable seven-second 0-100km/h sprint and 237km/h top speed attest to this, and the 220d has peppy pace when the throttle is thrust in anger, scooting off the line with spirit and almost no turbo lag. There is enough power whenever you need it, whether stealing gaps in traffic or punching past long trucks on the open road.

It’s just that the quiet and low-revving engine has an easygoing demeanour that doesn’t inspire hard-throttle driving, which contributed to the economical 6.8l/100km average we attained in the car.

At R889,706 the 220d seems like the most sensible buy in the 2 Series Coupé range for its mix of performance and economy. The car is also available as the 220i coupe M Sport (R842,590) with outputs of 135kW and 300Nm, and the flagship M240i xDrive Coupe with 285kW/500Nm (R1,138,662). The M2 will arrive later this year as the Alpha of the range, wielding 338kW and 550Nm.

Despite being one of the Munich firm’s smallest cars, the new 2 Series delivers the typical business class BMW experience. The second generation 2 Series Coupé, now more closely based on the larger 4 Series, is more grown up than the 1 Series-based coupé that preceded it in 2014. At 4,537mm the car is 105mm longer than the model it replaces, with increases in width and wheelbase too, and with its 12% improvement in torsional rigidity it feels impressively solid.

Chassis components carried over from the 4 Series further distinguish the new 2 Series Coupé from the compact 1 Series. Standard M Sport suspension and low-profile 19-inch tyres give the car a ride that’s on the firm side, but without being uncomfortably jarring, while the lengthened wheelbase prevents it from feeling choppy. Though there is some noticeable jittering over bumps and potholes, the car generally delivers an acceptably smooth ride.

It may not be Munich’s most powerful beast, but the 220d Coupé delivers the typically slick and pointy handling of compact rear wheel drive BMWs. It’s a treat to throw this car through a curve and experience its pressed-down nature and well-weighted steering, and there are eco, normal and sport drive modes that affect throttle, steering and gearshift responses.

There’s enough power to kick the tail out when you apply the juice too hard, though electronic nannies ensure such playful diversions are kept safely in check.

Inside the new 2 Series the executive flair is laid on with high-quality trimmings. The sporting appeal is raised by leathesuede bucket seats and M colour trim on the doors. The obligatory digitisation comes in the form of an infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument panel, but user-friendly physical controllers, including the tried and tested iDrive knob, remain for many of the oft-used functions.

Despite the car’s increase in size, the two rear seats remain cramped for adults and are best suited to small children. Boot space is a creditable 390l , however, and the split rear seats flip down to provide extra loading space.

Gadgets include a reversing camera, doors that automatically unlock and lock when you approach/leave the car and USB chargers. Like most German premium cars, the 220d is not overly endowed with features, and items such as electrically adjustable front seats, adaptive cruise control and parking sensors all have to be ticked in the options list.

The 2 Series is one of the few modern BMWs not styled with a contentiously large grille, and has conventionally sized air intakes — much to the relief of some, we suspect. Instead of oversized nostrils it uses flared wheel arches and a “power dome” on the bonnet to relay a youthful and extrovert aura, aided by sitting 28mm lower than its predecessor for a more sporty and pressed-down look.

Two-door cars are rare these days and the BMW 220d Coupé M Sport makes no pretensions at family practicality. It’s a car that will be enjoyed for its athletic looks and sporty driver appeal, with the thirst of a teetotaller as a bonus.

Recently moved to florida and I’m looking to upgrade. My budget is 30k financed to 72. I am a larger individual, 6’ 6” 380 (I do strongman). I am looking for something with a good amount of power that is fairly luxurious. Was hoping for a scat pack or something but anything newer than 2015 is just out of range. Currently my favorite considerations are a 2016-2017 BMW 750i xdrive with around 50-60k miles. Or a Chrysler 300c with about the same. If I wasn’t too concerned about maintenance on the bmw that would be my choice. Love the twin turbos, but I’ve heard it’s pricey to maintain, especially out of warranty. Please leave some suggestions or advice! I have a dodge charger and I come from a hot rod family so I have no issues repairing my own vehicle, that’s actually my preferred route. Let me know what you guys think! Thank you for reading.

Last season, on my daughters car, when replacing the current tires with snow tires, the shop told me that one of the tires had damage to it, razor blade or similar. Because of that, in the spring when returning to the original, that tire could not be used.
Rule of thumb on AWD cars is to replace all. But has that changed, and can I replace the one tire? (Note that the remaining tires have less that 5K of miles on them)
I've checked the BMW Owner's Manual for the BMW 2 SERIES GRAN COUPE and there is no specific guidance on tire replacement for the xDrive.
So replace all or one?
Note it is actually a 2022 BMW 228I Xdrive not the 30.

So a few cars I had been tracking, with desire to eventually purchase sometime in 2022-24 period were these.

BWM X4 (xDrive30i or xDrive30d)
Mercedes GLC Coupe (300 or 300d)
BMW X3 xDrive 30i
Mercedes GLC 300
Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport (30D)

The interesting thing about all these cars is that they all in the sweet spot of 100+ watts/kg of power-to-weight ratio and all of them have a very similar ~6s 0-100kmph acceleration. In fact you can create an acceleration simulation curve for all these cars on automobile-catalog[.]com using their compare tool and find that their curves almost line up exactly the same on a kmph vs seconds chart.
Already a couple of cars missing from the above list that sells outside are

Mercedes GLC 300d (in normal SUV, not coupe format)
Jaguar F-Page R-Sport 30T (the 2L inline-4 turbo petrol version)

I also really love how these German brands, and in this case Jaguar too, make sure that the 30i & 30d or their 300 and 300d or their 30d and 30t versions of the same car often end up with the **exact same** kmph-vs-seconds curve - i.e. regardless of the slight differences in bhp/torque numbers across petrol and diesel, both fuel versions of their cars are tuned exactly to match each other in a drag race.

Anyway, so it is 2023 now, and if you go out in the market to buy a brand new version of any of these cars you'll find that.

BMW has discontinued X4, and X3 only comes in xDrive20d engine, producing paltry 180bhp of power. No more inline-6 diesel engines. No 'M' trims at all in X3/X4 range anymore. X5 is a much heavier car, and same 3L diesel there doesn't produce similar results.
Mercedes has stopped selling 300 Progressive in GLC and GLC coupe is not even being sold as it is due for a refresh. Saving grace Merc always had their GLC 43 AMG available, albeit with long pre-booking timings, if you really want to cough up 1cr+ to get the utmost punch from an engine, but it guzzles petrol at 8kmpl and is not a car you'd buy for everyday usage.
Jaguar too is selling their 170bhp tuned smaller engines in their 'Prestige' lineup of F-Pace
Audi was never quite on my list, but nevertheless to complete the picture - doesn't sell the punchy TDI engines anymore - that's globally though, they are moving to a petrol-only strategy before going full EV

Anyway, here in India, widespread EV adoption (like >20% people using EVs) is still 5-6 years away, and people need to have chargers at home, and office parking lots all need chargers, and highway stops with chargers are needed too. Till that happens we are going to remain an ICE driven country. And in that reality - it is just sad to see some of the punchiest of engines in mid-rance luxury SUVs are all gone.
While CAFE norms are slightly to blame, I'd like to point out that some of these engines, especially the BMW striaght 6 diesel for example, actually produce way less CO2 emissions per km than many of the 30-40L cars sold in India today.
As for me - it seems I'll be looking towards the used market for one of the 5 mentioned cars in the top of the list, and if I get something < 4 yrs old with ~20k on the odo, will just grab it up because, there's no way to even buy those cars new anymore even if you want to.

Yeti is diesel but is more practical so I will keep it and change it in the next 2-3 years. What I am looking for is any car more practical than Mazda. I know that will be very easy to do because 90 per cent of all models are more practical heh, but also it must be more family car (expect second baby soon so 2 baby seats), petrol( think what you want but diesel is always more complicated and expensive to service), and... looking for the automatic gearbox. What brands do I choose (happy to widen the group) are : Honda(CRV), Toyota(VERSO), BMW (must be zf5 gearbox) maybe Kia, or Hyundai. What I don't like/trust/don't want are Fords, Vag group cars(I heard before 2019 petrol engines had some issues, and for the newest cars than 2019 I don't have many funds), all french cars, Alfas, Fiats, new Mazdas(My friend s CX5 from 2019 rusted above wheels ;) and mine still ok, miracle ) Jaguars/LRR (there where I live possibility for that someone will "borrow" it is 101 %). Don't forget (mean forget and play that company doesn't exist) about Vauxhalls, I will keep my opinion about it ;)).
Most concentrate I am on Toyota Verso (7 seaters, not necessary but good to see that option) and Kia Carens (just like how that car is practical). I don't need a 7 seater, it can be any mpv or SUV or estate car. It can be a hatchback in the style of a civic (civic? only type r but i need family car please remember).

TLDR; Looking to see the pros and cons of a g70 3.3t awd vs an audi s5 sportback or BMW m340i xdrive. See questions below for main asks. Thank you!
So, funny enough I currently own a 2013 genesis coupe 2.0t r-spec. Have about 110k on it, has been very reliable but cosmetically it has had many issues and been a pain. Otherwise love it, has been an amazing car but with 0 luxury features and small space. That being said, I am within the year wanting to get an upgrade, but am looking for an AWD luxury sports sedan (Family holding, while still getting my share of thrill). I am down to three options: Audi S5 Sportback, BMW m340i xdrive, or G70 3.3t awd (Prestige). I have a few things I wanted the opinion of some owners within the community so hoped that you kind people could help!
1.) Buying new versus used, I know they would depreciate quicker than other high end luxury sedans. Are the benefits worth it if I am aiming to have this for a LONG time to buy new? 55k-60k is a hard max budget wise and I specifically want the top trim/features. I'm looking used if going for the other two but buying the right car new would be sweet even a CPO would be cool too which I hear is a good route as well here but would that be worth it either?
2.) Considering this is lower priced within its class of competitors I've heard many concerns on the quality and reliability of the car (obviously not the engine but in the other technology and systems). Anything major that's worth considering or are they mostly unlucky or reckless folks with these issues? I have seen some complaints that are more yellow flags than red but do make me question if this is the "cheaper option" and in the future make me regret not going for something higher priced initially.
3.) Performance wise I know that it won't dissapoint as it has impressive numbers and reviews. But how does it hold compared to the good ol fashioned German engineering? Does it at least hold its own? Also I do know modding is a possibility but how available at this time considering this is still a somewhat newer make?
4.) Maintenence, how is it compared to the well known German money pits? Just curious if you can do the basics (oil, brakes, etc) on your own, and not blow as much as I would on the other cars for any other maintenance.
5.) Are the dealers that bad? The biggest thing I hear is countless stories about them having bad customer service.
Sorry for the long post, thanks for those who have read it all and any input provided! Plan to test drive one soon either way, I'm in northern VA at this time so any recommendations on the best dealership appreciated!
