Since most of what may be understood as tactile art doesn’t exist yet, there are no master strokes. But this doesn’t mean there haven’t been lucky strokes. My friend Robert Sirvage, a DeafBlind architect and design consultant, stumbled upon two such examples while traveling in Norway in the fall of 2017.
Norway had then recently legislated the separation of church and state. The formerly official national Lutheran Church had seven Deaf churches-called Døvekirken-that provided many services to the Deaf and DeafBlind communities. Now that these churches would no longer administer these programs, the seven Døvekirken realized that they would need to reinvent themselves. Sirvage was hired to help them reimagine their role and their spaces.
Upon entering the Bergen Døvekirke, Sirvage’s cane rapped against the base of the first of two extraordinary works. A priest at the Døvekirke in Stavanger named Georg Abelsnes had created them with DeafBlind parishioners in mind. He gave the pieces to the new Døvekirke in Bergen when it opened its doors on December 10, 1989.
The first piece, God Bless You, rests on a board about three feet from the floor. The main portion is a sectional cut of a tree trunk, a section where it starts to spread its roots. The grains are pleasantly rough, and the middle grain is studded with gemstones.
Sirvage found himself moving his hands downward and outward, his thumbs bumping across or wiggling past the gemstones. He turned to ask his host how they said “bless” in Norwegian Sign Language. It was as he thought-the piece indeed invites hands to follow its grains and in doing so say the word “bless.”
By returning to the top, this time beginning properly with closed fists, he discovered that the piece has another feature. Cleverly placed along its downward planes is a stick. When Sirvage moved his hands downward, he felt the stick gently opening up his hands. He marveled and later told his friends that the artwork is “all about motion and tempo, not static at all.”
As wonderfully interactive as this piece is, nothing could have prepared Sirvage for what he encountered next. He was later given to understand that the second piece is called something like God Loves and Protects You. Standing about four feet tall, it is made of rounded, polished, and unevenly shaped wood. It has subtle suggestions of a head, neck, and torso. Just below and in front of the torso-trunk of the figure, the wood becomes hollow, and within this is another piece of wood with a different texture. It includes a handle carved to slide into one’s grasp.
His host suggested that he walk around to hug the figure from behind. When he rested his head on the crook of the figure’s neck, he told me,
My heart jumped. Holy-Remembering that I was in a house of worship stopped me from completing the thought. It felt like I was transgressing big here, but in a good way. It felt like I had found a whole new way of knowing God.
What he had done was to temporarily assume the place of God, leaning over to hug the figure, which now represented Sirvage himself, his hand the Hand of God holding the handle, perhaps the hilt of a sheathed sword.
Shaken, Sirvage stepped back to ask his host more about this “performative artwork.” He learned that the DeafBlind parishioners and many others would, upon entering, commune with both pieces and go through the whole motions of simultaneously performing and receiving the messages.
“After my host became distracted talking with someone else,” Sirvage went on to share,
I turned back to interact with it again. This time I let myself relax and hug the figure. To make the message clearer, I allowed my heart and physical being to radiate with tenderness and love. After a while, I stood up and caressed my body. Somehow I knew that I would retrieve myself if I said something, and I was instantly retrieved when I whispered, “Thank you.”

Not story: I am out of the practice of writing, but it is a love of mine I come back consistently. I've decided to spend my mornings writing one short story to exercise this muscle once more. I would consider myself introspective in nature, while not always self-aware. Therefore, I am looking into childhood and the characters that influenced mine. My mother and father. This is the story about the day they met—
What was it about him?
Initially, in our youth, I suppose it could have been his sun-kissed skin developed due to his care-free nature, finding life in the waves of a far off place a family like mine could never afford to see. Maybe it was his knack for politely pointing out my obvious shy tendencies in the form of a joke. The small town I grew up in only afforded myself the ability to know a couple hundred folks, all of which were, however difficult at times, family. It is hardly reasonable to be swept off your feet by Joe down the street with whom you have a vivid memory of pushing you off the monkey bars in elementary. How humiliating it was to lift your face out of the sand, and find no one at your rescue, but instead the sound of his laughter at your despair. Boys will be boys was not a new concept to me, something innate in me taught me this was so by the time I could walk or formulate a conscious thought.
Then there was also the time that Joe was kicked out of his mother’s house, all of his belongings on the lawn, because he refused to work on the railroad with his father at the ripe age of 16. His poor mother only needed the help, and was relieved by one less mouth to feed. That work ethic would later do him well, but distract him from learning the ropes of being a romantic.
But this boy was different. Romance was his first language. Though a couple generations removed, I suppose his Italian roots run deep enough to be passed down the family lineage indefinitely.
Did the ocean teach him something I had yet to learn? It behooves me to acknowledge I had been longing for such a vast empty space that I know nothing about, or rather, knows nothing about me. Something other than dehydrated fields with little to no life forms other than ticks and black widows. A place where the sand is smoother, and should I fall on my face like I did on that playground way back when, it would feel as though the ground beneath me is only offering a pillow for a good night's rest.
How vain to surmise it would only be the physical beauty of another place that could create such a beauty as him. No, it had to be something more mystifying. I suppose skipping class in highschool, and getting away with it by charming the teachers, must’ve had its perks. I’ve lived by and because of the rules. The poverty my family experienced taught me that to do anything else would only lead to yet another difficulty, as if we weren't riddled with those.
I was 21 and had just moved to “the big city.” There he was, acid washed jeans, rolling stones sweatshirt, white new balances, and of course, a leather jacket covered in drywall to match the part. Smiling at him when he walked into the drugstore to fill out a job application was the first rule I broke. I knew I could never bring a boy like this home to meet my mother. Though, she was rarely home as it was, managing a nearby hardware factory on $8 an hour to support the rest of the littles that were still home.
A few days later he would be on the other side of the counter with me for his first shift. I can’t recall how the initial conversation would go. I do recall him offering to drive me home due to the ice storm outside. This California boy had no reason yet to trust me to drive his car for him, but it was clear to me that he had not been accustomed to the weather on that drive, and that it would have done the both of us justice had he offered me the wheel. At the time I would chalk this up as endearing, another boyish attempt to impress the girl. From there, we never spent a night apart. I did not know it at the time, but that would be the real tragedy.
Those initial sparks have yet to turn into a flame 40 years later, unless in the form of emotional turmoil in the home. At night I tend to the thought of my list of all the other rules I could have, and should have, broken. My dreams visit me, soon to be forgotten by the sound of my work alarm. There is a vague feeling of longing. Is it still for the ocean, or the heart of the ocean, where no one knows my name, and I am simultaneously unbothered by the question “who am i?”
I suppose there is not a need to know the answer if no one else is dictating that for you. When I searched for that vast space in him, I hadn’t expected the waves to engulf me into an abyss. My mistake.
It’s like a dormant virus that slowly digs its heels into one’s immune system. Overtime they would wake one day and struggle to remember how it felt to be at home in the body, struggle to remember “the before,” muchless envision a hopeful “after.”
The man on the pulpit at Sunday service makes marriage sound like a martyrdom that any virtuous person would stop at nothing to revive time and time again. I wonder at times if his wife would agree. I now know the show that folks put on in the name of God can easily conceal a much darker reality behind closed doors.
But who am I to project my own reality onto others? This must be my discomfort with the fact that living this way may indeed not be, or more accurately said, not have to be, normal.
How I envy the white picket fence dream now. I am an addict to no substance, but to the familiar. Living on a tightrope is the home we built. If either of us should fall off, at least then I, dead or alive, will be free.

32 f 5'4" no alcohol. No smoking, only drink water outside of one cup of coffee in the morning 205 lbs
I have been having bouts of light headedness for a little over 2 weeks now. Today has been a really bad day. This occurrence has resulted in 2 falls so far. To preface this I have not been able to wear a bra without chest pain for 3 weeks. If I don't wear one I still have chest pain, but it's not as crushing.
There is a pain in my left armpit that moves over my left breast and stops at the center of my chest. This hurts to the touch. Is aggravates more when I lift my arms(wash hair, etc)
I don't know if these two things are connected. I take blood pressure medications (which it's now controlled) and flecainide 100mg 2x
I feel almost high with how light headed I am. The room spins. And my chest really hurts. A crushing pain.
However. Ecg, ekg, blood pressure cuff and finger monitor all say my vitals are stable. I do have a spike in heart rate but that's prolly from my nervousness about how extreme my light headedness has become.
Is this something I should go to the er over?

This is the abridged tale of why the best story for one PC meant a one-hit-kill to the Yester Hill Tree Blight for 39d6 damage. Trigger warning: suicide (heroically?)

The Beginning:
When we rolled characters at campaign start, as DM, one of my players (CB) presented two dilemmas:

She would miss the first session. So while every other character would start at L2 in Daggerford, she would start at L3 in the Svalich woods.
She wanted to multiclass a L2 Halfling Emerald Enclave Moon druid, and asked me to choose for her. I told her she'd find out her other class and gift the night of the game.

When Theda Teafoot awoke in those cursed woods, there was no body around from when she and her Enclave partner had been ambushed from the fog by dire wolves. She found herself to have a form of dread: black branches and thorns thistled around her hair and an unknown undead warlock patron which had kept her safe.
In time she would find her natural druidic spells were black and corrupted like the Swalich woods, and the trees all spoke like they were a singular presence. Later, her wild companion was revealed to be a reflavored needle blight using the spider stat block, a creature none of them had ever seen and found horrific in its own right.

The Winery:
What was described to them from the refugeed Martikovs matched her companions description, so she didn't reveal it, and once inside, having survived more than 54 blights and multiple druids who had corruption resembling her own, they encountered the druid with the staff. In a failed charisma save, she turned and eldritch blasted her own party. They tried to restrain her while attacking the Druid, and on his death she snapped out of it. While she was restrained, they checked his body and found no staff only to realize it had rematerialized in her hand. She refused to not keep it. In their final encounter with a vine blight, it bowed before her in the instant before it fled.

Yester Hill:
Here is where her story will end. They reach the effigy moments before Strahds arrival. They try to hide behind what turns out to be a berserkers grave and fail a stealth check even with pass without trace. It kicks off. Strahd fireballs them and then decides to make a Spawn out of the fighter, Sextus, who tried to hold person him. Most of the party fights for their lives and the life of their many times bitten fighter against 6 berserkers and the dark lord.
Not Theda. She sees the druids ritual in progress and rushes far away to engage them solo, managing to peel off a few from the ritual to engage her, but never all of them. Her and those druids all roll like crap, and wild shape let her tank against many druids at a time. Meanwhile, every round of the ritual, she keeps getting asked to make a charisma save and she does.. saving 8 times in a row.
This encounter lasts a table-record 6 hours, 2.5 sessions, and 14 rounds of combat. On round 4, Strahd gets nova'd by a paladin and has to retreat out of melee and guiding bolt range as he falls below 30hp. The fight refocuses on killing the overwhelming numbers of Berserkers and Beucephalus before Strahd returns rounds later regenerated, with greater invisibility, ready to finish turning the fighter.

Round 11:
The fighter has 1 out of 8 hp and has figured out Strahd intends to bite his max HP to zero and turn him. He offers info on Ireena in exchange for a normal death and when Strahd suggests he'll just ask him after he's enthralled, the fighter instead drinks a vial of acid to die. I rule this is an acceptable way to die without saving throws. And the party is stunned at the first PC death at my table in years.
Revenge is off the table as Strahd is back at full health, the other 3 PCs have a combined HP of 11 and their resources are drained. They begin to run all while Strahd goads them.
Then, 150ft away, Theda fails her charisma save and is forced to join the druidic ritual just as it climaxes. The druids stop attacking her briefly and the tree blight comes into existence.

Round 12:
Looking at the towering creature before her, Theda finds herself free again and begins to dash towards her surviving friends, pursued by the druids and tree blight. Strahd stands nearby entertained by their fear.

Round 13:
She knows she can't catch up to her friends and decides to draw aggro for a final round. She finishes off one druid that's pissed her off since the first round and is immediately jumped by the others, including being hit for two failed death saves. The tree blight then does something unexpected. It lifts up her body and places her inside of itself, sealing her in with its bark. Inside the tree, with a single death fail remaining, her unconsciousness finds out her patron is Gulthias and this is how it's meant to be because he has plans for her.

Round 14:
From 200 ft away, the party hears a loud BANG! Debris of splinters rain from the sky and pepper their leathered backs and pierce one of their ears.
Rewind: CB and I rolled that death save and worked out her final scene privately before telling the party, and I'll be damned 'nat20'. Theda awakes entombed within the darkness of the tree blight, save for the glowing green seed at its heart. She sees a knotting of tiny roots connecting the heart to the monster and she uses her last act to defy her patron and use his staff to break the roots and sever the connection.
The tree is killed instantly and the magic from the ritual erupts for 1d6 force for every turn a druid chanted. 120 damage and a luck roll determines everything within 50' becomes a pink, brown, and black mist; Strahd is bloodied, minionless, and has no reason to stay and every reason to leave. The survivors see him turn into a bat and fly back to the castle.

Sextus and Theda are able to commune briefly in a pocket ethereal. They can see the madness-enducing edges of the domain of dread, the illusion of distance beyond the fog, and the traces of other trapped souls awaiting unholy infusion into a future husk they'll be born into. But until that happens, they can briefly consider their place in this non-afterlife.

After a short rest and a few hours of searching, the survivors find the glowing green seed a few thousand feet away. Upon touching it, they feel a druidcraft of wind brush through their hair and fur, and two black flowers sprout thistled within.

Alucard, the No Life King

In the 15th century, Vlad Dracula was the Voivode of Wallachia and conducted many military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. Although he was a hero to the Romanian people he ruled, to the world at large he was a genocidal butcher famous for his acts of cruelty, gaining the name "Vlad the Impaler" for the way he would display the skewered corpses of his enemies. Although he was eventually defeated and brought to the gallows for execution, he decided that living by any means possible would be better than an ignominious death at the enemy's hands. He drank the blood of the execution grounds, and was resurrected as a vampire.
In the 19th century, Count Dracula was defeated yet again, this time by the vampire hunter Abraham Van Hellsing. Rather than killing the vampire completely (if such a thing was even possible), Van Hellsing sealed and buried the creature deep in the Hellsing mansion, binding him to be under the control of the Hellsing vampire hunters.
Now, in the modern era, Sir Integra Hellsing is the current head of the Hellsing Orgainzation, the British Crown's vampire-hunting agency. When she became the head of the family as a child, and a jealous splinter faction of the Hellsings sought to have her assassinated, Integra went to the one place she had been told to run to when all hope was lost--the tomb of Dracula. When her blood touched his skin, he was revived once more, now a loyal servant of Hellsing. He goes under the name "Alucard", and works for the government, dispatching other vampires to protect the humans he once terrorized. Although, perhaps, given the opportunity to break free of his restraints, the true monstrous power of the legendary vampire would be far more dangerous than the threats he fights against...

I stared out into the gray of another bleak winter morning and found myself lacking once again. Slamming the door closed, I reluctantly resigned one more day to the coward's ash pile of which I was a regular contributor. All those fleeting moments, minutes, hours… years… All wasted under the perpetual fear of an unknown evil, all the while knowing that the weight of responsibility fell squarely on my head alone.
The very last one…
I hadn't left my house in weeks. Months, possibly. The passage of time had slowed to an agonizing crawl, giving the impression of far longer. The isolation had near driven me mad, my hands giving into shakes whenever I'd hear noise from outside. The only comfort I found was within my own reflection, the remaining evidence I had that I was still a human being.
"There's nothing left for me out there..." I affirmed in the mirror, my daily mantra, as if trying to convince someone other than myself.
"Nothing at all."
I peeked through the blinds and watched a former neighbor shuffle down the street in a monstrous, shambling gait. The mangled stump of its foot dragged listlessly behind as it sluggishly made its way round the bend into the next street and out of sight. They were everywhere, waiting and ready in the shadows where I couldn't see. Shrieking. Every night was the same. Their bizarre mating calls blared out into the otherwise dead twilight, rending me from any peaceful sleep I might have possibly enjoyed. It was blood-curdling, like they were being flayed alive… and yet still with something joyous and terrible simmering underneath. Their crying wails are one of ecstatic, starved hunger.
They called me mad when I began fortifying my home, all the locks and shutters. Well, who's mad now? The shriekers, that's who. Utterly insane, driven only by their base instincts and a desire to destroy and assimilate. They wish to take me as well. I was so afraid, but I knew what needed to be done from the very start. I had to go back outside.
I had to burn them in their nest.
Summoning up all the spine I could muster, I silently slipped out through the front door and over to the one across the street on that freezing dark night. I could hear them moving around inside, yelping and shrieking as always. A thick sliver of disgust overpowered the terror as my jittering hands fumbled with the lid on the petrol canister. I regained my composure as I focused on my mission, allowing the revulsion to drive me. It spun off, clanking against the cold metal body of its host noisily, I swallowed a lump in my throat, reassuring myself that I was still as of yet unseen.
I attached the plastic hose and the pungent liquid flowed freely through the thin metal letterbox. I made sure to be quick about it, one slip up and it'd all be over. They'd be on me like a pack of wild dogs to a feast. The canister ran dry, and so I pulled out the lighter. I flicked its ignition repeatedly before finally striking flame, and after one last frantic look around, in it went.
The house immediately erupted in flames and I retreated back to safety, desperate to get inside before the swarm arrived to salvage its sickening brood. I observed half in glee and half in a growing dread as the nest was engulfed. Then just as expected, they arrived. Their awful wailing tearing through the night. I shuddered as I closed the blinds, hoping this would at the very least thin out their numbers, if not force them to move on from the area entirely. How I longed for the day when I could venture out without fear of an attack… to rebuild, and to restock my ever dwindling supplies. The start of a whole new world, a better world… like the old one. My eyes began to close as I fell into a deep sleep, the shrieking outside now just a familiar white noise of sorts, lulling me.
I awoke to a loud banging on the front door. They'd found me. I loaded the cartridges into my revolver, rounds spilling to the floor from their box as I panicked. More banging, I couldn't ignore it this time. They were never going to move on. Not until they had me. I knew it in that moment, I wasn't going down without a fight.
Through the shuddering sight I stared down the barrel of the revolver as I descended the stairs, growing closer and closer. The rattling pounded its way throughout the house, each knock making me flinch and throwing off my aim. I fired three shots through the door. The knocking stopped, but they weren't done.
A while later, they returned. I could hear an immense growling emanating from the street outside and I took position, gun trained shakily on the entryway. But it was no use.
A blinding flash filled the room and I dropped my weapon after only one misguided discharge. I was rushed by the horde and was sent tumbling to the floor, screaming 'till the very last. I felt something sharp prick my neck, and all went dark.
That was some time ago. A long time ago. Many years in fact. I'm still in their cage, but they'll never get me. I won't fall for their tricks. They've taken the form of human beings, a sick mockery of their former lives as normal people, in their never ceasing attempts to assimilate me along with the pills and potions fuelling their petty illusions.
They tell me that I'm a murderer, that I'm 'very unwell'. That I'm in a hospital and that the 'doctors' are here to help me. They even dressed up one of their own as my brother, my fucking brother, who perished in the initial outbreak. Lies, all lies. They know that when I, the last one, am assimilated that they'll finally be able to cover the planet entirely.
They underestimate me though. My resolve is strong. And when I escape this place, I'll burn them as I find them until they are no more. Until not a single shrieking demon remains.
I'm not scared anymore...

Location: Ohio
Earlier this year I received a summons to appear in court from the county sheriff saying that I was being charged with disorderly conduct for an event that happened in the fall of last year. Some background on the event and detailing it are below:
I had two vehicles on a family members land who passed away and I was ordered by the new owner to remove the vehicles from the land. The vehicles were then listed on marketplace without my permission so I asked for help from 2 other people to bring trucks and trailers so we could get my vehicles off the property and avoid all other issues associated with that.
While getting the vehicles off the property an individual who routinely calls the cops and lies about things I'm doing in attempt to get me arrested shows up and once again starts trying to cause issues while we were loading the vehicles on the trailers and we just ignored them because we knew if we engage in any way he will call the cops. He then aggressively spins his truck around on a dirt road slinging gravel and dirt against my truck and one of the other individuals helping me vehicle. We ignore this and go on our way.
As I am driving away after loading up my trailer I stop at an intersection where a county sheriff pulls up next to me and asks if I was involved in the incident down the road. I respond that there has not been any issues and I'm just getting my property off some land that no longer belongs to me and state that I have the ownership papers for the vehicles and the officer tells me to turn around and follow him down the road where he instructs me to get out of the vehicle. He then gets my parties recount of the incident with the aggressive individual and then drives down the road where this person and gets their side and then sends us all on our way with no other statements.
Fast forward 3 or 4 months and I receiver a call saying I am being charged with disorderly conduct for this event and they will be serving me papers. They serve the papers in the following days. I have a copy of the police report from that day and in no part of it does it mention me by name or any disorderly conduct on my behalf or anyone who was with me. In addition to this, the officer who responded to the false call that day and wrote these tickets that we never received, is no longer a cop.
They are now trying to make me pay this fine but I have done nothing wrong, is there anyway to get out of paying the fine for disorderly conduct?

I've been reading lots of posts here and in other marriage/divorce subreddits for days and I see a common theme with a lot of what women are asking advice about... lack of emotional support.
My husband (38M) and I (39F) have been married for almost 8 years, together for 11 (no kids, three dogs). I am just now discovering things about myself that I feel no longer fit with this person, or this marriage. What I mean is that I have a lot of unresolved and unrealised childhood trauma and I guess I've been coasting along for most of my life. Doing things I thought people are supposed to do rather than asking if it's what I really wanted, putting up with things that are hurting me rather than addressing them head on. However I didn't know myself as well as I do now, and I'm still figuring that out, so the decisions I made in my 20s almost feel like mistakes at this point. I will be going to therapy soon and getting my hormones checked because I don't honestly know what is going on with me half the time.
I feel like I'm about to walk away from my marriage. Sometimes I think I have legitimate reasons to do so, other times I think I am overreacting.
I don't know if marriage is right for me or if I just married the wrong person.
For the most part my husband is pretty good, he's not physically abusive, no question of infidelity, no alcohol or drug issues. His love language is acts of service so he's pretty good at helping out around the house with dishes, washing, cleaning, gardening. He isn't great at cooking so I take that and meal planning on board. I also handle everything else, all the bills, the budget, organising outings and holidays, and what we're going to do with our dogs (two of them have arthritis so I make sure they get all their supplements, injections, proper approved exercise, home adjustments, the list goes on). I make all of his medical appointments for him, if he needs anything ordered online I do that too, home improvements also fall to me to organise (we're not DIY savvy or handy at all). If one bill goes unpaid or there isn't enough money in our account to cover a direct debit he gets mad at me for it. If I drop the ball in any of my areas of responsibility he gets frustrated and angry.
He works away for a week then he's home for a week, I have recently given up the 9-5 life and am doing a few things at home as well as some dog walking/training. I still bring in a bit of money but not as much as I used to. This isn't an issue for him at all, he was more than happy for me to give up a job that was causing me so much stress and burn out. So now I also make sure the house is clean and tidy for when he gets home, he has brought up in the past that my messiness is an issue so I've worked on resolving that. But he also has a very high standard of what cleanliness means and if I haven't 'done it right' he will get mad that he has to do it again.
My love language is words of affirmation and physical touch, both of which I have mentioned and both of which he never gives me. He has mentioned on a few occasions that my weight is an issue for him and that's why he doesn't touch me or initiate anything further. I honestly couldn't tell you when the last time we had sex was.
I've always struggled with low self-esteem and body issues, as well as a fear of rejection so I've stopped initiating things. If someone flat out tells you that your body isn't desirable how are you supposed to get over that? I've slimmed down multiple times over the years and nothing changes no matter how good I look, I receive more compliments from total strangers than I ever have from him... I had to ask him on our wedding day how I looked and he replied with "fine" (I also organised every aspect of our wedding with no help from him). I have asked him for hugs and to give me back rubs (etc) and each time he rolls his eyes or groans at the request. It's almost as if physical touch annoys him. I stopped asking years ago.
He talks to me like I'm a piece of shit most of the time too. He says it's because he's exhausted from work, which I understand, his job is full on, but when I say to him that it's not an excuse he just gets more angry at me for being so sensitive; for always thinking I've done something wrong when its really that he's just completely shattered. I can barely ask the simplest of questions without getting snapped at.
I organise nice outings and things for us to do with our dogs and the entire time he'll either complain, look utterly miserable, and/or just remain totally silent. Again he says it's because of work and being so tired. I make sure when he does get home that he has quiet time alone to rest and sleep, I think about all the things I can do to make life easier for him all the time. I don't feel like he has any regard for me at all in the same way I have for him.
He does deal with anxiety but I think it could be more than that? I brought up marriage counselling 2-3 years ago but he said we didn't need it.
He doesn't communicate well and I could certainly be better but I have definitely tried to communicate my feelings in the past. If it falls on deaf ears and he doesn't seem receptive to how he makes me feel (only angry at it being brought up) how am I expected to continue trying?
He never seems happy no matter what I do. He is a negative thinker too which does not help, always thinking the absolute worst about almost everything.
Recently I've mentally checked out of the relationship. When he's home I basically pretend that he isn't. I do my own thing, go on my own outings, focus on my hobbies. I've stopped organising things for us to do together, I've stopped initiating conversation... if he's going to be a moody, angry, miserable asshole whenever I do anything I don't see the point in trying anymore. I answer him when he asks me things, I reply when I need to reply, but I no longer initiate conversation like I used to, I no longer put his needs and moods above my own. I'm exhausted carrying that side of the relationship along with everything else.
He has noticed something isn't quite right and said: "Are you going to talk to me?" to which I replied "I'm done talking to you because I don't like how you respond to me" all I got in response was "Ok" and then he walked away.
So now he's just come back from work, off a week of night shift, he should be sleeping and getting back into a regular routine except he's doing all this work around the house as if I'll suddenly be ok. As if I'll suddenly forget everything else and just accept his bullshit behaviour like I have done for so many years.
I have asked him why he speaks to me that way (aside from being tired) and he said that it was probably because I don't pull him up on it often enough.
Am I a doormat? Is my lack of self worth the reason I have ignored all this and put up with it for so long?
I apologise for how lengthy this is, I have left out a lot more detail but it still seems very long winded and a bit all over the place. Thank you for reading.

For a few years, electric trucks were mainly being worked on by startup companies, while the large tech companies were mostly silent on the issue. This all changed around 2017. Tesla unveiled its all-electric autonomous truck in 2017 and the early customers of this product are Walmart, UPS and PepsiCo. Then, Daimler unveiled the electric siblings of their most popular trucks, Cascadia and M2 as eCascadia and eM2 in 2018. At the ACT Expo in 2018, Roger Nielson, the CEO of Daimler Trucks, said that the time has come to contemplate the post-internal combustion engine. The production of Daimler electric trucks will begin in 2021. In April 2019, the Nikola Motor Company, a tech startup unveiled its semi-truck powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Anheuser Busch, a beer making company has planned to buy 800 units of Nikola’s hydrogen fuel powered semi-truck.
Uber has also acquired a startup company, Otto which is working on autonomous trucks. In October, 2018 Otto completed the first shipment in the world from a self-driven truck. The cargo hauled by it contained 51,744 cans of Budweiser.

Any technological advancement requires large investments. According to a report from CB Insights, $2 billion has been invested in startup trucking companies as of 21st May, 2019. The investments in tech startups jumped a huge leap from $114 million in 2014 to $3.6 billion in 2018. The growing interest in the future of trucking has increased the scale of investments. The costs of electric trucks are quite higher than that of a diesel truck. Nielson went on to say that the business scenario at present will not allow a sane fleet operator to buy an electric truck. The industry needs to find ways to carry on research and make batteries that are half the current size and price. Also, it must double the energy density. In the meantime, partnerships and grants can make production of electric trucks possible.

Electric Trucks - Future

The depletion of the conventional sources of energy have made researchers seek alternative sources to power vehicles. Additionally, vehicles need to be designed and structured in such a way that is compatible with alternative sources of energy. Thus, conservation of nature has been a driving concern behind a lof of the recent innovations.
Since trucks were first used in the late nineteenth century, they have come a long way. The future seems quite exciting as truck manufacturing companies are aiming to build electronic and autonomous trucks. Trucking had altered the way America did business and a lot is set to change in the coming years as well. With Tesla, Volvo, Daimler and other truck giants about to launch electric trucks in a few years, the future of trucking never seemed so promising and exciting.

A Brief History of Electric Trucks

The first crude yet viable electric motor which could power a tiny car was built by ÁnyosJedik, a Hungarian priest in 1827. 28% of vehicles running on American roads in 1900 was actually powered by electricity. Milburn electrics was the vehicle used by President Woodrow Wilson and his team of secret service agents to travel around Washington, DC. Once charged, the vehicle could travel a distance of approximately 60-70 miles. Though, initially electric vehicles did not have rechargeable batteries. The first electric carriage was invented somewhere around 1832-1839 in Scotland by Robert Anderson. It ran on primary cells which were non-rechargeable. The nickel-iron battery was one of the kinds of rechargeable batteries.
Of the many companies that produced and sold electrical vehicles, Baker Electric, Detroit Electric and Columbia Electric were quite notable.

Why did electric vehicles lose their prominence?

Cars powered by internal combustion became cheaper. Also large petroleum reserves were found in Oklahoma, California and Texas. Additionally, roads outside urban areas began to improve. Due to the availability of better roads, cars with internal combustion engines became a more popular choice.
In 1913, Henry Ford introduced a line of gasoline-powered vehicles. These vehicles were mass produced which lowered the price. Gasoline vehicles became more and more popular. The electrical vehicles began to lose ground, only to come back with a bang after nearly a century.

Why do Electric vehicles seem like a promising option in the present day?

There are a number of reasons behind the growing popularity of electric vehicles:

Can use electricity generated by non-conventional sources

Electrical vehicles need electricity to recharge batteries. Apart from fossil fuels, this electricity can also be generated from renewable sources like solar, wind and tidal energy.

Leaking oil from conventional engines

The conventional engine may leak oil. If not detected in time, this can lead to damages. Electric vehicles do not have this fear as they run on rechargeable batteries.

Regenerative braking

Regenerative braking is one of the key advantages of plug-in or hybrid electric vehicles. In a hybrid vehicle a conventional way of propulsion is often merged with an electric one. This braking system helps an electric vehicle gain back the kinetic energy which is usually lost as heat during friction braking. This recovered kinetic energy can be stored in the vehicle’s battery as electricity and give a small recharge in that way.

A step towards autonomous driving

It is an easier integration for full self-driving capabilities to happen with an electric vehicle rather than a traditional engine.

Less noise while operating

Vehicles that run on electricity cause less noise in comparison to a combustion engine. Emitting less noise means that a truck can run in suburban areas at night without causing any disturbance.

Electric vehicles have fewer service and maintenance needs. This is because there are 30% fewer movable parts as compared to a conventional vehicle with a combustible engine.

As electric vehicles do not run on conventional sources of energy like fossil fuels, there is no smoke emission. Hence, it can be driven in environmental zones as well.

Types of Electric Vehicles available

HEV or Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Instead of using only a traditional engine, a HEV or Hybrid Electric Vehicle, adds to the engine an electrical option. By using regenerative brakes, HEVs convert kinetic energy into electric energy as mentioned above. These vehicles use both electric energy and use gas or diesel to operate.

PHEV or Plug-in Electric Vehicle

A hybrid electric vehicle which has a battery that has the option of being recharged by plugging it into an external source of energy is called PHEV or Plug-in Electric Vehicle. These vehicles use electricity for short distances. When the battery is over, the driver can switch over to the conventional combustion engine. This type of vehicle allows the driver flexibility that ensures high fuel and energy utilization. The use of electric energy to run the vehicle saves fuel costs. The emissions from the tailpipe are also minimized.

BEV or Battery Electric Vehicle

This type of vehicle uses chemical energy stored in its rechargeable batteries. This is a pure electric vehicle. Being battery operated, BEV vehicles do not have a combustion engine. Instead, it uses electric motors along with motor controllers.

FHEV or Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

This type of vehiclehas an electric motor, that is recharged by the chemical reaction of oxygen and hydrogen. It is true that some emissions are created while the hydrogen is produced for the fuel cells. However, water is the only waste product while an FHEV is driven.

Autonomous Vehicles

The advancement of electrical vehicles in recent years calls for another futuristic feature in trucking: autonomous driving. The concept of autonomous driving began with the notion of ‘driver assistance’ or ‘assisted driving’. It aims to have completely driverless vehicles or a vehicle where the people inside are passengers. Undoubtedly, the concept of autonomous driving demands an advanced technology with superior sensors. P C Mag has defined an autonomous car as, “A computer-controlled car that drives itself.” Autonomous trucks can save a lot of money too. Morgan Stanley estimates that if American trucks are made autonomous, $168 billion can be saved each year. Though, we are still many years away from full autonomous driving as of now. Autonomous driving has been set to five stages. The fifth stage is considered the most technically and mechanically advanced one:

Stage 0 – No Automation

Vehicles controlled by human drivers and without any sort of support from computerized driver assistance system is considered stage 0 or ‘No Automation’.

Stage 1 – Driver Assistance

Vehicles in ‘Driver assistance’ level or stage 1 are jointly controlled by the driver and a computerized automated system. There are a number of ways in which this system can work. A driver usually always controls the steering, while the automated system may have certain control over the brakes and speed of the vehicle when required. At times the engine power is controlled by the automated system which ensures that the vehicle can maintain a specific speed. At times parking assistance is also available with this automated system. Here, the speed of the vehicle is controlled manually while the steering is done automatically. However, the driver has to be alert and ready to take up the control if any problem arises. This type of driving is also called ‘hands on’ driving.

Stage 2 – Partly Automated Driving

In stage 2 or the ‘Partly Automated Driving’ level, the driver monitors the driving process while it is conducted by the automated system. If in any situation or condition, the automated system cannot do its job or fails to respond, the driver has to take up manual controls immediately. This stage is at times called ‘hands off’. In this stage it is mandatory for the driver to keep hands on the steering wheel at all times. This mandate is for safety purposes. Having the driver constantly holding the steering wheel means that immediate manual control of the vehicle can be taken up during any situation.

Stage 3 – Highly Automated Driving

The ‘Highly Automated Driving’ level is commonly called ‘eyes off’ level. This means that the driver is not required to constantly monitor the driving or look at the road ahead. The automated system will be able to perform on its own and without any human interference. If any problem occurs, automatically the emergency brakes are applied. Though the driver can usually do personal work while the vehicle is on the road, during adverse or critical conditions human intervention may be required. These situations will be specified by the manufacturer before-hand.

Stage 4- Fully Automated Driving

In the ‘Fully Automated Driving’ the human driver is allowed to take their ‘mind off’ in most of the situations. The driver may sleep or do other work in other part of the vehicle as the vehicle is capable to look after its own safety. This type of vehicle is capable of completing the journey and park itself. However, during traffic jams (which falls under ‘special circumstances’ category) or tight-spaced areas, the vehicle has to be operated by a human driver.

Stage 5- Full Automation

In a vehicle having ‘Full Automation’, the steering wheel is optional. Hence, it does not require any human intervention for any aspect related to driving. Through this type of vehicle, full automation is achieved.

What is our present stage in Truck automation?

Volvo’s VNL and Pleton’s Platooning System are examples of trucks that are available in the trucking market today that have Stage 1 automation. Under the Stage 2 automated truck category, the new 2020 Cascadia will be the first truck in Northern America according to Freightliner. It will begin production from July, 2019. Embark and Starsky Robotics are the two other Stage 2 automated trucks that will be available in the future but at present are in pre-commercial stage. Freightliner Inspiration and Uber Otto are trucks that fulfill the criteria of the Stage 3 automation. However, at present they are only available in prototype retrofits. The Freightliner Inspiration was the first automated truck to be licensed to operate on the highways of the country back in 2015.
At the CES electronics show in Las Vegas on 7th January, 2019, Daimler trucks announced that it will invest more than half a billion dollars and create 200 new jobs in its global endeavor to launch Stage 4 or highly automated trucks in about 10 years. The switch from Stage 2 to Stage 4 is natural and hence the step of conditional automation is being skipped as according to Daimler, conditional automation will not provide any extra advantage to the truck drivers. In the 3rd stage of automated driving, drivers can go about doing other work but have to take immediate control if the system cannot tackle the situation. The mental and physical switch from leisure to prompt action may not be as quick as required thus, it is judicious to skip the Stage 3 altogether. Additionally, Stage 4 will ensure optimal utilization of the trucks. They will be able to travel at night and avoid traffic congestion by smart route management. Future of trucking is looking very promising with autonomous vehicles.

Platooning in Trucks

Another trucking innovation in the near future is platooning. Platooning is the coupling of two or more trucks to form a convoy through the use of automated driving support system and connectivity technology. The ways in which platooning works is:

The trucks maintain a set automatically.
The space between the trucks is reduced when the trucks are connected to each other during certain parts of the haul. This reduction of gap between the vehicles improves the aerodynamics which in turn improves fuel efficiency.

Peloton Technology plans to commercially introduce a platooning system that is partially automated. This system at present allows two trucks to work in a close chain. Peloton technology’s PlatoonPro is already being used in fleet operation by six of its clients.
The features of Platooning system by Peloton Technology:

In the PlatoonPro system, the driver of the rear truck steers the vehicle.
The powertrain and brakes are controlled by the PlatoonPro system. This allows the vehicles to follow one another at a small gap.
According to Peloton Technology, the PlatoonPro system ensures average fuel savings of 7%.
The Automated Following system is a combination of radar-based active braking and software with vehicle-to-vehicle communication. This allows the human driver to guide the steering, acceleration and braking of the following trucks. The human driver will also be able to connect the trucks’ safety systems with little or no latency.
According to Peloton Technology, the L4 Automated Following truck will double the freight a truck driver is able to haul in one trip.

Usefulness of platooning

Platooning is said to have a number of benefits for the future of trucking:

Improved safety

Truck platooning is said to improve the safety of the convoy as the brakes of all the trucks can be applied automatically and immediately. It has been seen that during truck platooning, automated brakes take one-fifth of the human time to analyze the road condition and apply the brakes.

Efficient performance

There can be optimal utilization of roads in the platooning system, increasing the range of the roads and avoiding traffic jams. As a consequence, goods can be delivered quickly and efficiently.

Cleaner environment

During truck platooning, the Carbon Dioxide emissions can be reduced along with fuel consumption. The air-drag friction is also considerately reduced as the trucks drive close to one another.
However, Platooning is not really as fuel-effective as it is being claimed by some. Daimler has said that during testing of the platooning system its fuel savings are less than estimated even in perfect conditions. These savings are further reduced if the platoon is disconnected and have to be accelerated again to get reconnected.

Shipper Platform: Uber Freight and Amazon Freight

Freight brokerage connects shippers with the appropriate carriers. Recently, technology is playing a role in this aspect as well with Shipper Platforms.
The Trucking business was taken by storm with the introduction of shipper platforms like Uber Freight. Shipper platforms connect shippers with small fleets hauling freight via a load-matching feature. Uber Freight launched its load-booking app in May, 2017. The main intention behind the launch of Uber Freight was automating the manual processes of shipper selection and increasing market visibility. It was also intended to relieve shippers from time consuming legal proceedings and the anxiety of getting the best possible deal. This is one of the many ways on how owner operators can find loads.
The features of Shipper Platforms and how they may impact the future of trucking:

Carriers can book a load with just the click of a button.
Shippers can instantly connect to a network of drivers and fleets of the Uber network and manage shipments from their office or home.
Uber freight enables shippers to tender a load with the click of a few buttons saving time and energy.
Transparency of quotes helps shippers know the marketplace pricing instantly. The Uber Freight’s rates are current on-going marketplace rates which are generated in real-time.
The vast network of drivers and small fleets with Uber Freight ensures that reliable and appropriate fleets are chosen.
Shipments can be tracked. For every major milestone, automatic notifications are sent to the shippers.
Uber Freight’s Uber Freight Plus has a loyalty program. It gives the drivers fuel discounts, servicing discounts, and helps in the purchase of old and new trucks among other features.
With the completion of the delivery, all the necessary documents are arranged automatically for shippers.

Uber also reported that the freight division has a network of more than 50,000 carriers and mentioned that some of the largest carriers in the country are users of the app. However, it has not been all great for Uber Freight since its launch. Uber Freight posted a loss of $64 million in the first quarter of 2020. According to CNBC, Uber Freight gives 99% of the revenue generated to the trucking companies, which leaves little room for profitability.
There may also be a few other reasons why Uber Freight has not been fully able to live up to its vision:

Rudimentary features

With the growth of GPS tracking and ELD devices, merely providing shippers the details of the truck’s location is not unique. Shippers also need to know the route the truck is taking and the HOS data.

Not so reliable in fleet and driver selection

In Uber Freight there is not a lot of barrier to sign up. All carriers do not have to provide basic requirements like an active DOT/ MC number, proper safety ratings or proof of insurance. A shipper may not feel comfortable about doing business with such carriers.

Shortage of drivers

Uber Freight provides drivers a number of perks. In spite of this, driver shortage is quite a problem. Drivers will want a steady job that ensures a good livelihood. Hence, many drivers will prefer to work with a trucking company with regular pay, rather than rely completely on Uber Freight.

Focus on shippers rather than carriers

While launching the load-booking app, the shippers’ perspective was given a lot of importance as the price transparency feature shows. However, the carriers are an integral part of the trucking business too. Apart from the loyalty program there has not been a push to ensure that carriers get steady and constant work through Uber Freight.
Uber Freight is not deterred from their path though, and mentioned recently in 2020 that their focus is still there to grow the Uber Freight business.
Amazon has also launched its own freight app, ‘Amazon Freight’. Amazon Freight was released quite quietly some time in 2016 or 2017. This app allows truck drivers to take up jobs of hauling Amazon packages in Prime-branded trailers across the country.
Fleets can sign up through the website and hauling assignments get allotted accordingly. There are a few requirements which drivers have to fulfill:

A fleet should have at least 3 trucks.
The trucking company should have its own DOT/MC number.

Amazon tried to use the truck drivers base and enhance its business via the Amazon Freight service. However, truckers do not see a good livelihood coming from only hauling Amazon trailers. Anecdotal evidence says that the payment is fairly low. It can be kept as an option, or can be opted as back-hauling. Doing business exclusively with Amazon Freight is said to not be fully profitable. In spite of the initial setbacks, Uber Freight and Amazon Freight are changing the future of the trucking business.
Amazon launched its freight app ‘Relay’ in 2018. It operates in 5 states—Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania. Its aim is to give truckers additional freight information. It has features like route tracking and expedited checking procedures at the warehouses. It has been designed to help truckers get faster entry and exit at the Amazon warehouses. It is Amazon’s first attempt at automating the truck delivery process.

Blockchain Trucking

The trucking industry in general has certain inefficiencies. Deals can take time to get finalized. The related paperwork is again, time-consuming and hectic. The trucking industry needs an open platform where shippers and carriers can view each others profile, get the selection process done in less time and get the load rolling. However, how will this be possible? The Blockchain is kindling hopes of achieving a seamless and frictionless trucking system. First, let's understand the basics of blockchain and how it can make the trucking space a community where work can get done more efficiently.

What is Blockchain?

Blockchain is an open digital ledger. It is a business network where transactions can be recorded along with tracking of assets. Blockchain technology is inherently based on cryptography, a complicated branch of mathematics. Blockchain is also decentralized. It depends on the consensus of a peer network spread across the world to function. This digital ledger is made up of a series of ‘blocks’. The blocks are the bundles of transactions which are connected together in an open ‘chain’. The data entered in the blockchain is considered to be true and valid. As being a decentralized forum, there is no single authority to verify the facts. Everyone is always on the same page. It is impossible to change or modify the data in a block as that will modify the entire chain and will need consensus from the entire network.
The whole community associated with the blockchain will be able to validate the data entered by an organization as blockchain technology is an open-to-all ledger. It leaves no room for speculation, assumption and data falsity. Hence, a holistic trucking ecosystem can be developed through a blockchain network. After all, organizations can be rest assured that the data they have been provided is authentic and validated.

How will blockchain be used in the future of trucking?

The trucking industry can definitely benefit from blockchain technology. One of the obstacles of the trucking industry is that it is largely fragmented. There’s no open knowledge about which shippers are currently looking for carriers or which carriers are open to haul shipments. Blockchains open ledger will open up the trucking industry. One of the problems it will most definitely solve is matching appropriate truckers with shippers. In the longer run blockchain technology can function as an open network for truckers.
The trucking industry largely depends on paperwork. Due to this, administration and processing costs have gone up to 20%. However, blockchain technology allows the sharing and easy distribution of documents on the open ledger. This sharing facility makes paperwork between shippers and carriers quite unimportant. Easing out the hassles of documentation will make payments possible in less time.
Some trucks, especially refrigerated ones, carry medical shipments. These are at times detained at customs for large periods of time. This mostly happens when trucks exceed the allowed range of temperature. A blockchain enabled refrigerated truck-trailer made by the Swiss Tech company, SkyCell, lowered the temperature-deviated rate to less than 0.1%. With the use of smart approvals, clearance at the customs checkpoints can be made smoother and more efficient. Moreover, a refrigerated trailer has to be closely recorded at every step. It has to pass through more than 30 organizations which require more than 200 different pieces of information. Any miscommunication can either delay the shipment or the shipper may lose track of it. A blockchain network will ensure that communication at every step is clearly noted. This ensures the shipment reaches the respective facility on time.
The e-commerce industry has developed in such a pace that same-day and 2-hour delivery options are provided to customers. For a parcel to be delivered in the same day or in 2 hours, the technology should not have any glitch. The traditional trucking technology largely relies on paperwork at every stop can not be suitable for such a fast-paced delivery. The blockchain technology with its immediate access to order tracking and authentication ensures that the delivery takes place in the required time.
At times, trucking companies order spare truck parts and also old trucks. The tracking of these spare parts or old trucks can be pretty exhausting as no proper forum is provided for constant tracking. However, the blockchain network will enable the efficient tracking of the supply chain as well.

Efficient Freight Tracking

As mentioned above consumer expectations are ever-increasing along with demands for same-day delivery and two-hour delivery. Blockchain will not only take care of the tracking of the shipments but also help in authentication.
In order to ensure consistent improvement in trucking operations, authentic data has to be provided to transportation companies. EDI or electronic data interchange and API or application program interface leaves room for data manipulation or misinterpretation. Blockchain has the backup of the entire network to contribute information and authenticate the data. Hence, there is no scope of data tampering. Blockchain also improves the efficiency of temperature controlled and refrigerated trucking which is reliant on on-time delivery by giving data backup at every step.

IoT (The Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) enhance monitoring efficiency

Carriers and shippers can detect the total space taken up by a shipment in a trailer with the help of IoT. This helps to determine the expense of the shipment and all the information can be transmitted to the blockchain. This aids in maintaining the transparency of the freight cost. SkyCell had created containers for air freight. These containers monitor humidity, temperature and location for transporting biopharmaceuticals that require refrigeration. Its cloud platform is also utilized by SkyCell for recording every document of the shipping process, from start to finish. As these cargos travel through various check-points, all the required documents available at hand make the transportation process easy and efficient. Thus, the blockchain technology ensures that valuable cargo is transported intact and has the backup of all supporting documents that might be needed along the journey by using IoT and AI.

Maintaining vehicle performance history

While it is very important to have fleet tracking records for future use, the tracking records of a vehicles performance is also beneficial for the future. A vehicles performance records include its maintenance history and past performance. When considering used trucks, buyers are usually interested in the past history of the truck. However, that leaves a grey area of speculation. With blockchain technology, a prospective buyer and seller will have all the information validated by the entire network easing any intermediary speculations.

Ease of new carrier onboarding

While taking on new carriers, it is quite difficult for freight brokers to find all the adequate information on that carrier. It is quite time consuming to get all the required details together and that also leaves room for speculation. However, with the blockchain system all the necessary details of the new carrier will be provided by the decentralized network. This network stores all the data of the carriers operating in the transportation and freight industry. No new carrier will be able to give false information in an open network.

Vehicle to vehicle communication via the Internet of Things (IoT)

Platooning technology uses vehicle to vehicle communication to enable vehicles to work together as a convoy. This communication via IoT can improve the vehicles efficiency and safety as the platooning system claims to do. All communication information can be stored in the blockchain and this information will be helpful for all the transportation companies using the blockchain network to operate their fleets better.

Improving reliability of load boards

In a blockchain network, all the loads can be verified by others and get time-stamped in the process. This will ensure that loads are not duplicated and the carriers get authentic information. The blockchain network will also be able to authenticate all the loads put up. Thus, the reliability of the load board is improved due to a blockchain network.

Smart Contracts

Smart Contract allows companies to program self-executing tasks in the blockchain network. The task gets automatically performed when certain criteria are fulfilled. For example, a carrier’s payment can be released when the cargo reaches the facility if the task has been set accordingly.
Those are a list of some potential benefits. The largest blockchain network at present is by the Blockchain in Trucking Alliance (BiTA). Its current members have exceeded 1000 in number. The members include mcCleod Software, UPS, DAT, Salesforce, Don Hummer trucking, Transfix. BiTA members are taking part in nearly 85% truck-related global transactions. Its blockchain standards have brought a uniformity and efficiency in the trucking community. Sweetbridge is another blockchain based technology that seeks to take care of the significant inefficiencies of the supply chain across the world. Some major problems it addresses are — supply chain operations, supply chain flexibility and supply chain liquidity.
The blockchain revolution has just begun. It must also be taken into account that to use a blockchain system, the trucking or shipper company must have the adequate resources like the required hardware and software, along with the technological know-how. In spite of all the speculated downsides, blockchain seems like a wonderful solution for many trucking problems. It must be nurtured with time and technical advancement. In the coming years, the trucking industry’s profitability and efficiency will reach new heights if blockchain trucking’s functionality continues along the same graph.

Artificial Intelligence and Trucking

According to the American Trucking Association, the US freight transport will increase to 20.73 billion tons by 2028. This huge growth by 36.6% from the freight weight of 15.18 billion tons in 2017 will need an advanced infrastructure. This will be able to ensure smooth operation of such a ‘healthy’ industry. Along with the existing challenges, fuel prices, increasing cost of operation, driver shortage and shortage of shipping capacity will be the crucial areas in coming years. Every American is virtually affected by trucking. Hence, smooth operation must be ensured so that the economy and the lives of the people maintain a steady pace. AI can be of real help to continue to roll the wheels of the trucking industry.

Cost reduction

AI will be able to foster predictive maintenance systems. This will help vehicles perform better. With constant monitoring, any mishap can be predicted beforehand. It can monitor by keeping in check the maintenance logs, IoT sensors, and other external sources. This will have a dual impact of reducing the maintenance costs and increasing the fleet performance. In other words, it can predict when a maintenance will be needed in advance of an issue occuring. So rather than being reactive with maintenance issues, carriers can be proactive.

Lower the numbers of highway fatality

AI along with IoT enhances vehicle to vehicle communication (V2V). V2V along with ADAS, or advanced driver assistance systems, can prevent nearly 40% of road crashes according to a publication by the NHTSA or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The prevention of highway fatality will save a lot of money and more importantly lives. Cisco IBSG estimates that the savings can be $280 per crash.

Natural image processing

Trucking involves a lot of paperwork. The documentation has to be stored in proper folders as any information may be required for any purpose in the future. This process can be exhausting and time consuming. AI with its feature of natural image processing can recognize and retrieve any scanned document. This easy retrieving of documents will aid the manual task of computer data entry.

Predictive analytics

AI processes past performance records. This will not only predict the health of a vehicle but will also predict about the drivers. AI will also be able to analyze what conditions are preferred by drivers and what are the chances of driver retention.

Match carrier with shippers

While human freight brokers find it extremely taxing to connect the appropriate carriers with the shippers, AI can easily do so by matching facts and data.
With all the new technological advancements and more to follow, the future of trucking indeed looks promising and exciting. Since I’m working to rewrite Part 2 anyway, I thought I’d show off some of my writing and the thought process behind it. My general philosophy is “similar, but different.” I try to take as much as is usable from Part 2 but changing dialogue, or context, or the idea behind it in order to make something new. And because the story is presented out of order anyway, why not whip it into a proper logical shape? Therefore, Part 2 now has a prologue, that picks up almost exactly where we left off in Part 1, with Joel and Ellie in Jackson. We get Ellie’s introduction to Dina and Jesse (since the game wants to present them as friends, might as well actually make them friends). And we get Joel discussing what he did with Tommy, justifying his actions, and saying that Ellie deserved to live.
So now that the audience caught up with Part 1, now let’s get into part 2. We meet Abby and her dad, it’s the zebra scene. It sets up their relationship, and reveals something important about both of them, just like in the game, it’s the same, but different. In Part 2, the zebra runs counter to the giraffe. Nature needs mankind’s help and attention, it subverts what we know and expect from the scene that it’s ripping off. So I did what Neil would do, and steal from his work that everyone actually likes, and that changes the entire scene.
After a few minutes of walking in silence, she followed a cloud of flies to a discarded placenta and umbilical cord. Her father followed her excitedly. “She must have already given birth!” He bent over abruptly, “A-ha, I was right, see, two sets of tracks. See how one is smaller than the other? I think we can follow them.” He got very quiet and crouched down low, not wanting to spook the zebra or it’s newborn foal. He squeezed past a dented metal gate, then held it so she could fit through as well. “Dad, wait, what if there are infected here?” “There aren’t, this area is clear.” “You know they roam!” “You brought your gun, right? We’ll be fine. Also, keep your voice down.” He ducked under a green tarpaulins hanging over a fence, into another clearing, divided by a new river. “Abby, look.” He said in hushed awe. She followed him, and stopped right behind him. “Wow!” He said softly, watching the zebra canter around, and watching its child learn to run. She watched intently, worried, watching for a threat that never came. He pushed her forward, in front of him, but keeping her close. He put his hand on her shoulder, before he spoke to her again, softly. “Abby…we don’t have to do this.” He said, watching the zebra and it’s foal. “You know that, right?” “What’s the other option?” She asked. “We could pack up and leave, tonight. You and me. Owen, if you really want. We could be done with this whole thing.” “After everything we’ve been through? After everything we’ve done? You just want to walk away?” He looked at her, his steely blue eyes meeting hers, even if only for a moment before he went back to the zebras. “It all has to be for something. They took us in, fed us, gave you a purpose again.” “I know, and I appreciate that. But I’m starting to think they stopped looking for the light.” She said nothing, watching as the zebra started to leave with its newborn. Her father sighed mightily. He watched wistfully, until they had left the glade, before he turned to leave.
The conversation should feel very familiar, because it is almost verbatim the scene with the giraffe, just recontextualized. Because what I’m trying to do is make Abby redeemable. To make her a proper character, with an arc. To make you sympathize with her. And what better way to do that than to create an association with something you already love. So when she watches her dad burn to death in front of her, you feel her horror and the birth of her obsession and her desire for revenge.
There’s more to her of course, but it’s a start. Especially since the prologue ends with Joel and Ellie falling out. But our story must begin somewhere. Similar, but different.

I'm posting this in request of feedback as well as a heads-up to veterinarians, vet techs, etc. regarding possible NSAID reactions in dogs:
Our 13-year-old dog started limping on one of his front legs so we took him to the vet and he was prescribed carprofen and clindamycin (she suspected a tooth infection with migrating pain). Within a week, he was paralyzed, his hair was falling out, his eyes weren't functioning properly, etc. Our quick google searches suggested that he could've had a serious reaction to the NSAID carprofen so we stopped carprofen immediately.
We took him back to the vet and she rejected the possibility that it could be a carprofen reaction. She changed his antibiotic to metronidazole, gave him a shot of penicillin and a shot of diazepam, and told us that our next step should be to see a neurologist.
Four days later, he remained largely paralyzed and had developed a constant neck tremospasm. We took him to a university-affiliated veterinary hospital and he was observed by a neurologist, who also rejected carprofen reaction as a possible explanation. The vets said he probably had some sort of cancer in his upper spine and advised us to euthanize him immediately. They gave him a shot of methadone and prescribed 2 days of pregabalin while we considered our options.
Fortunately, his neck spasm nearly disappeared after one dose of pregabalin, so we decided to wait and see if he improved further. Six days later, he has recovered. His hair stopped falling out, his vision and balance returned, and he is able to walk, go up stairs (going down stairs is still somewhat tricky), get up and down from the couch, etc. His appetite and bowels are normal and his mental state is bright and alert. We have started going for walks again and his endurance is obviously much reduced, which seems to annoy him greatly. He is back to his old self!
To me, his rapid onset of symptoms coupled with his rapid recovery suggests that this was indeed a medication reaction, possibly coupled with drug-induced aseptic meningitis. Can someone explain why veterinarians would not consider this possibility, even though it is listed on carprofen's drug label? We feel like our experience was bizarre, and it almost ended in us needlessly euthanizing our dog.

From the short story "Two Metaphysical Blades" by Chris Wraight, which revolves around the special spears gifted to Russ and Valdor by the Emperor. Russ's forces its victims to know themselves (it's the weapon he used to wound Horus in Wolfsbane); Valdor's forces its wielder to know its victims.
I'm mainly posting this because it's is a counterpart to the scene from Wraight's The Great Wolf that's currently on the front page, with Russ and the Lion. I think it's meant to take place shortly before that one. There's also been some discussion of Valdor and his relationships with the Primarchs, vis-a-vis The End and the Death, and this is a nice grace note for that character thread.

And now Terra is burned again. It is all gone, all cold, the flames extinguished. The skies are smothered, the earth is black. A continent-sized fortress stands in ruins, its living occupants in psychic shock, its guns silent. Ash falls across the globe in soft-whispered rain, the last time anything will fall from Terra’s clouds.
Who can tally the loss that was incurred here? It is a task never to be performed, no matter how many adepts of a numerically obsessive Imperium attempt to catalogue the destruction. A new age has been birthed, one that will last ten thousand years before its eventual expiry, a staggering, limping age that will see the last vigour of the Crusade damped down and stamped out, an age of forgetting and smothering.
War will never cease from that point, not truly, but on Terra itself, a shocked silence descends. For a strange and short interval, like a caught breath after trauma, the world holds itself static. The surviving Titans are like haze-wreathed statues on the grey horizon. Fighting men and women stand, their arms slack by their sides, their dull eyes staring at the falling ash.
It is into this world that the Wolf King returns at last, too late to influence the outcome yet too early to escape it. It is his surviving Grey Hunters who stalk through the echoing corridors and banish the last of the ghosts from the still-hot stone. Even the primarchs are humbled by what has taken place. They no longer strut, not like they did on Ullanor seven years before. They are diminished, the ones who survive.
Valdor finds him in a place that was designed as an observatory but will become, over a thousand painful years, of all things, a chapel.
‘Your brother is looking for you,’ he says. He means the Lion, who has come back, also too late, and who now rages through the corridors, lost in a storm of grief and madness.
Russ looks up. His mane is matted, his fangs look blunt. When he smiles, it is gruesome, a wrenching of flesh once ruddy and apt to genuine mirth. ‘Still carrying that damned thing,’ he observes.
Valdor does not know if he can ever let go of it. His fingers have been clamped around the grip for so long that they are hard to prise open. The illuminations still echo in his mind, thousands of them. He has killed thousands.

‘Where is yours?’ Valdor asks. His voice cracks with fatigue. Even for him, this has been like a lingering death. He cannot forget what he saw on the Vengeful Spirit, nor what was lost on those Neverborn-infused decks.
Russ snorts. ‘I told you I never used it.’
‘I gave it to you myself. Here. Before you left.’
‘And it did what you told me it would.’ Russ looks straight at Valdor. ‘Only, my blade illuminates those it strikes, not the hand that carries it. Did that achieve anything? I don’t know. I never will, now.’
Valdor lowers himself, crouching on cramp-stiff muscles. ‘Nothing He did was without purpose. A seed may flower many centuries from its planting. I have seen it myself.’
Russ looked sour. ‘You never stop,’ he muttered. ‘Even now, even here, you’re still spouting these platitudes.’
‘Do not be so hasty to write off His–’
‘He’s dead, Constantin!’ Russ roared, finally rousing himself and shaking the dust from his pelt. ‘All the plans are dead too. We’ve pissed like dogs all over them and now the galaxy stinks from our spoor. Look around you. Try to see this world as those with a soul see it. Try, just for a moment, to be angry.’
Valdor does try. He indulges the Lord of Fenris, and tries. All he hears, though, are the voices of the slain. ‘You cannot get rid of it,’ he says, quietly, knowing the danger in such words. ‘Understand this. When you took it up, on Seraphina, it claimed you as much as you claimed it. It will keep coming back. It will follow you through time, for it was made for you and no other. Some things survive. This is one of them.’
Russ’ shoulders slump. He sighs, deeply, and flecks of bloody acid stain his robes. ‘You always did accept your fate,’ he says. ‘But I never could. I thought that was why He made me the way He did. Now I just think we were all tainted, and I don’t know anything anymore.’
For some reason that triggers something in Valdor. As if from the catacombs far below, he hears the echo of a voice that will never speak out loud again.
Flux and stasis.
‘You will not change,’ Valdor says. ‘Neither will I. That cannot be random.’
Russ is no longer listening. ‘The greatest sin on Fenris,’ he murmurs. ‘To fail your jarl.’
And then, Valdor does something so out of character that even he is surprised by it. But then, this is a time of extremity, the moment when one epoch passes to another, and all but the most mechanistic soul cannot fail to be stirred by that.
He places his hand on Russ’ shoulder, and exerts a faint pressure of reassurance.
‘It is not over yet, Wolf King,’ Valdor says, in as empathetic a manner as he has ever managed. ‘There are sagas yet.’

Remember what happened with FTX? Prices crashed for months and there was big aversion in crypto. And then a few months later we suddenly got a pump. For sure it was a rough couple of months, but we actually recovered fully and then some with a bit of patience.
Then what happened with Genesis and Gemini and the Earn Program and the subsequent Genesis bankruptcy.. At least for me, it was a fairly big stain because of the pristine reputation of Gemini as well as Grayscale’s good name, as Genesis acted as the sole authorized participant for all of Grayscale’s assets which is basically just a asset manager for them. Markets didn’t like this news but the fall and rebound were decently quick.
Then there was Silvergate and Signature collapse. Admittedly, we still don’t know the impact of these as their collapse actually had more to do with banking and Fed regulations than crypto, as well as the fact that the collapses are fairly recent and co-mingled with a general banking crash although FTX certainly impacted Silvergate. But of course, we saw a big surge from the bank crashes.
Markets also didn't seem phased by the SEC fined and accusations of securities violations on exchanges' staking products, even with the sizable fines and settlements a number of exchanges had to bear.
From last weekend it was a tough one. First, Binance had a ‘bug’ with their trailing stop order features and halted trading for hours. This seemed to depress markets and we had a leg down. Then, days later Microstrategy disclosed buying several thousand Bitcoin(which typically causes a sell-off), as well as Binance being sued and facing strong allegations of misconduct. Markets took this very heavily, but recovered extremely quickly even with Bitcoin surpassing where it was before prices fell.
For whatever reason, markets are very resilient. And with the banking crash looking not quite over, we may yet see some more. Just yesterday five French banks were raided in a 100 Billion fraud. More bank runs, and possibly outright crashes, are sure to come.
