Dunno if y'all will like this, or if it will even remain up, but a bit of a DISCLAIMER; The first chapter is more akin to a prologue than an actual part of a story, but it is required for the story to make sense, as the story needs a lot of world building and explanation for everything to work out, and unless y'all wanna be confused for the next three chapters, then I suggest you read, unless you aren't interested of course. Oh yeah, it was so long that I needed to post the first chapter in multiple parts, so get comfy, and prepare to read almost forty pages in total.

Chapter One - Part One
Extremely Lengthy Exposition

He didn’t know how to describe it.
A sort of lucid state in which he was only partially aware of who and what he was? Maybe. A condition of some sort of brain death, it being a result of gazing upon an entity far too complex for the human mind to ever even dream of conceiving? Perhaps. Or maybe it was a sign. A sign from whatever gods or higher beings that were our forefathers, our creators. The very things that created the universe, and all others as we know it. Perhaps it was a sign from Them, of his ascension, his final evolution into a being so superior, that to others, he could be considered a god himself. Yes, that was right. He could feel it, the power. Not in a way of touching something with a hand, but in a more metaphysical way, one far better than the crude grasping tools that humanity has had to work with for far too long.
It was so close, the innate understanding that was intrinsically tied into the human genome from eons ago, the inheritance he was meant to receive, what he DESERVED to receive, was right there. All he had to do was reach out, and touch it. He did just that, his mental probes extending outwards towards it, to claim what was rightfully his. He closed his fingers around it, and-
“Jacob, wake up. The doctor is trying to say something to you.”
Or it could just all be a construct of his dying brain, one that was futilely trying to sort the things that he was experiencing into something that could be translated and read.
“Jacob?” His mother repeated, with a more stern note entering her voice.
“Oh uh, sorry. What were you trying to say?” Jacob leaned forward, clasping his hands together, placing his elbows on his knees and leaning on his arms.
“I was asking you how you’ve been feeling recently, as it does pertain to the conversation I am having with your parents.” The doctor smiled patiently, expertly hiding most of his probable frustration behind a veneer of placidity.
“Relatively well, though I have been having a good amount of headaches, considerably more than usual.” Jacob responded, plastering a nonchalant expression onto his face.
“And what about that little . . . episode you had a moment ago?” The doctor questioned, leaning forward expectantly.
“Oh yeah, that. I guess I just kinda zoned out there for a second, you know?” Jacob replied casually.
“Zoned out for over half an hour?” The doctor tilted his head.
“Yep.” Jacob wasn’t going to fall for the bait.
“Hmm.” The doctor leaned back. “Well, I'm fairly sure that ‘zoning out’ for over half an hour with absolutely no idea what's going on in the outside world isn’t exactly normal behavior typical for a boy of your age, Jacob. Did you perchance have any sort of feeling that you can’t explain, or something similar to an out of body experience? It could even just be similar to lucid dreaming.” The doctor appears to be very insistent, Jacob, why don’t you take care of him? You could be out of state within a day or tw-
“Well when you put it like that, sure.” Jacob decided that he would indeed play the doctor’s game.
“Hmm. Well Mrs. Pattine, you heard it from him. When we did our testing last week, we noticed extremely irregular brain patterns that would normally indicate extreme stress upon the brain. However, Jacob here seemed perfectly fine, aside from a rather annoying headache.”
“Now, I’m fairly sure that anybody could deduce that that type of behavior from the brain isn’t good at all. In fact, the tumor that we had diagnosed Jacob the same week, being practically the size of a peanut, has now doubled in size. In fact, the growth appears to be scaling upwards in terms of the growth rate. What was doubling in size per week, will quickly grow to quadrupling, and then quintupling. Soon, Jacob will have to undergo intense chemotherapy.”
Jacob’s mother did not seem placated, like what the doctor was trying to do, but in fact appalled.
“Why are you saying all this in front of him!? He’s just a child for damn sake!” Jacob's mother clutched Jacob tighter, much to his both amusement and frustration after she refused to let go.
“I’m sorry Mrs. Pattine, but all parties involved here have to know what’s at stake here, including young Jacob here.” The doctor, to his credit, did seem genuinely remorseful, yet not really backtracking enough to make an effective apology, more like creating a plausible justification for his actions.
Jacob didn’t really care either way. Well, he did care that he was probably going to die and was thankful that the doctor had decided to be blunt, but not caring about his mother’s rather extreme outburst in his supposed defense.
That had been the case as of late, not really caring about his loved ones. Well, he DID care, at least he thought he did, but why did they always have to be just, so, well, like that all the time? Jacob was rather exasperated from the whole ordeal, and plus, the doctor was talking again.
“-however, we have a solution to this problem of Jacob’s.” The doctor reached out to the briefcase on the table to his right, opening it. He then extracted what appeared to be a syringe filled with clear liquid.
“This is a prototype we, us being ANTI, have been working on for a long time. You might have learned what this is from various pop culture and media sources, but if you don’t, I’ll explain what it is now.” Without giving anybody in the room time to protest, he continued on.
“This is a syringe full of nanobots. Yes, honest-to-god, genuine nanobots. We’ve been working on these for a good amount of time, since around 2000, yet no significant headway had been made towards making a nanobot serum cost-effective enough to employ in more, liberal, uses.”
“However, when Russia annexed Crimea back in 2014, Congress decided that a viable threat was rising, and revived the program with a stimulant called cold hard cash. When another budget increase came with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it didn’t exactly hinder us, and a year later, we came up with the first effective prototype of nanotechnological biological cellular regeneration to date. And now, we're gonna give it to Jacob.”
Mrs. Pattine didn’t appear to care about all of the war stuff or fancy political words, only really catching onto the words of, “give it to Jacob” and responded accordingly.
“I don’t believe it. What's the catch?” Mrs. Pattine glared suspiciously at the doctor.
“No catch, just the requirement that we are given full liberty to experiment on the tumor in Jacob’s head, within legal bounds.” The doctor appears to be trying to brush over that fact, but Mrs. Pattine also catches onto the important bits.
“You want to experiment on my son!? That sounds like a pretty big catch to me!” Mrs. Pattine screeches in protest.
“It’ll be within full humane laws, nothing illegal, I promise you. In fact, we’ll give you even more incentive.” The doctor pauses, seemingly for dramatic effect.
“So, out with it!” Mrs. Pattine seems to be quite stressed, and most likely wants nothing more than to just go home already.
“We will give you a sum of thirty million dollars, with no tax put on it.” The doctor says plainly.
Mrs. Pattine doesn’t react for a moment, seemingly processing what she just heard.
“Th-th-thirty million dollars!?” Mrs. Pattine splutters in disbelief. “You can’t be serious!”
The doctor chuckles. “Oh but I am. We’ll place it directly into your bank account, as liquid assets would likely be hard to manage for you. It’ll even be covered by insurance.”
Mrs. Pattine clearly is still suspicious. “This is too good to be true.”
“I can assure you, Mrs. Pattine, it is not.”
She looks unsure as to whether or not to take the deal, and looks at Jacob.
“Go ahead.” Jacob shrugs, hoping to maybe NOT die.
Mrs. Pattine then gets up. “I need to go over this with my family.”
They accepted the deal.

Three days later, Jacob was inside a chamber packed with men and women in lab coats, all of them seeming to be doing something important. The room was about twenty feet in diameter and in height, circular, with a large ten-foot-high blast door being the only intentional access point that could be used to enter the chamber. A large secure industrial vent was inset into the ceiling, also covered with a steel mesh to prevent something from getting in, or perhaps out. In the center of it all was a large contraption, with many pipes, hoses, and wires protruding from various access ports around the machine. It all seemed a bit too militaristic for a minor cryo experiment, but what did he know?
On the front of the machine in the center of the room was a thick plastic cover that exposed the interior, the interior being a cavity about eight feet tall and two feet wide. It appeared to have been designed to allow a human to rest upright inside the machine, and rest comfortably to boot, utilizing a foam mold to mimic a bed. In fact, the little foam mold appears to be fitted to Jacob’s exact dimensions. Jacob, being the ever-curious fellow, inquired as to what the strange doohickey.
“So uh, what am I looking at here?” Jacob gestured to the machine in the center of the room.
“This is, for all intents and purposes, a cryo pod. It can effectively freeze a human being, preserving them for extended periods of time, without them growing or aging at all.” The doctor, who appeared to be in charge of this whole ordeal, answered him.
“And you’re putting me in there?” Jacob asked.
“Yes. We are hoping to learn more about that little tumor-that-isn’t-a-tumor in your head, as it's something that we haven’t ever seen before. Since the tumor is progressing at an alarmingly fast pace, and since we don’t want you to die, we will be placing you in this for a single year, on the dot. The freeze will stop the progression of the tumor, and the nanobots will keep you in top shape even if something goes wrong with the pod, and they will even combat the tumor, so you aren’t in any danger.” The doctor replied.
“Huh. And you’re gonna find some sort of miracle cure for the tumor while I’m on ice?” Jacob asked, wanting to get all of the essential information.
“Yes.” The doctor didn’t elaborate this time.
“Uh, cool. So we’re starting now? I was wondering why I was in this weird looking wetsuit thingy.” Jacob pulled at his sleeves, the tightness of them a little uncomfortable.
“Yes. Once the specs have been fully calibrated, we can place you in the pod, and you can say goodnight.” The doctor nodded to himself. “Yes, it should only be ten more minutes.”

Fifteen minutes later, a bit over schedule, everything was set up. Jacob was standing in front of the cryo pod, talking to one of the doctors.
“So I just step inside, right?” Jacob inquired.
“Correct you are. We’ll strap you up, run diagnostics, and then see you in t- a year.” The lady, Dr. Sophia Vasel by her nametag, appeared to have stopped herself from saying something was either a simple misspoken word, or something she wasn’t supposed to say. It didn’t really matter to Jacob, since you could just kill her, now and be done with it. It would be so easy, to ju-
“Alright, nice.” Jacob stepped up inside, a little stepladder conveniently set into the machine. He turned around and shifted a little, trying to get comfortable. Dr. Vasel and one other doctor began strapping him in, hooking little electrodes and wires up to him to do all sorts of technical mumbo jumbo. After a minute of attaching devices to him and making sure everything was in order, they began to run diagnostics to make sure everything electronic was working. After an agonizingly long ten minutes of affirming and reaffirming, the first doctor that he had met with walked up to the plastic clear door with a microphone in his hand.
“Can you hear me Jacob?” The doctor asked.
“Yeh.” Jacob replied lamely
“Uhm, OK, it seems like everything is alright on our side, so without further ado, I think we’ll be seeing you in a year.” The doctor nodded to his colleagues next to him, and they started to press buttons on the console. A loud alarm started blaring, and a hissing noise spread throughout the pod. Devices began to inject what was probably some sort of powerful anesthetic, considering he began feeling extremely drowsy a moment later.
The last thing he saw before he fell asleep was the plastic cover being coated in frost.

Three weeks after that, a government official of the program that had taken Jacob Pattine in for treatment and experimentation contacted the Pattine family to offer their condolences, as they had to inform them that due to a malfunction in the systems of the nanobots, Jacob Pattine had unfortunately died in testing, and that they hoped this won’t sour relations between them.
However, it did sour relations between them, as the subsequent lawsuit against them proved all too well. It had even progressed to a Supreme Court case called Pattine v Army Nanotechnological Initiative, which ended up with a seventy-two million dollar payment towards the Pattines, and a ruling that outlawed any and all with the use and/or experimentation on humans with nanotechnology, as it was deemed too dangerous to use on humans. A deep-dive into the records of the ANTI yielded many discoveries, the most notable of them being the many deaths of humans in the testing trials of the nanobots. This also led to the dissolution of the ANTI, and shaped the future of nanotechnology for years to come.
However, using nanobots for the use on humans didn’t stop there. In fact, some would say it thrived, just in a different way than imagined. Like many other creations that were found to be too radical or immoral for the majority of the populace, the CIA was the one to collect the scraps, and make it their own. By using their own funding to revive the unofficially named Nano-Cryo project, they resumed research, employing many of the original members of the infamous project, with the doctor being put back in charge of the currently unnamed project.
That left only Jacob to deal with. Luckily for him, Jacob wasn’t so disposable as some might believe, as certain conditions on his being made his potential quite desirable to some shadowy heads of certain organizations. This led to the CIA creating a cover story about the unfortunate death of the boy, which would allow them to both obtain the asset, and snip off the loose thread that was ANTI, killing two birds with one stone. They continued testing within CIA Black Site-046, which was located within the city known as New Jersey, which would later influence the name of the secretive project.
One more alteration would be made to the test. As Jacob had now been cut off from the outside world and was presumed dead, the CIA had no worry about public retribution, allowing them to extend his period in the cryo pod from one year to ten. At the end of the ten years, Jacob would be woken up from stasis, and testing would be enacted, with various procedures analyzing how his physiology had reacted to the tumor and the extended stay in cryostasis. The nanobots were there to ensure that Jacob didn’t die from the tumor, but also to make sure he didn’t die from the long periods of time spent sleeping. After twenty-four hours had passed, Jacob would be placed back within the cryo pod, and be woken up again when another ten years had passed, with this cycle repeating for the foreseeable future.
In the development of the cryostasis model, one thing had persisted throughout the trials. When the testers had been subjected to extended periods of time within stasis, once unfrozen, the brain would refuse to reactivate. No matter what measures were taken, the brain would simply not resume biological function, and the subject would be effectively dead. The leading theory on this was that the brain had been “dead” for so long, that it simply couldn’t remember that it was alive. This is the same reason why cavemen, even if perfectly preserved in ice, couldn’t be simply revived with a shock paddle or some adrenaline.
So, the nanobots were there to stimulate and keep the brain semi-active during time spent sleeping, keeping the brain alive through the barest of actions, making it more akin to sleep instead of simply dying and then being revived with a perfectly preserved body and brain. However, this led to the tumor being slightly active as well, so it would still progress while within stasis, albeit at an incredibly glacial pace. This would likely cause problems in the future, but a solution is bound to come up at some point.
Right?

Invariably.
What an interesting word
And a nice one at that. It really just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? A word that most people probably can’t even recall the meaning of, yet is seen so commonly in works that are often above the skill of your average eighth grader. It means for something to happen a lot, or always. For instance, you could say, “Oh, whenever I go to my friend's house, the meals his mother makes are invariably burnt.” or something along those lines.
Jacob couldn’t apply that word to his situation.
That would imply that he had been doing or experiencing something for long enough that he could use that word as a hyperbole. However, he hadn’t. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Imagine blinking your eyes. Now try to recall how long the moment between opening your eyes and the light reaching your eyes was. Now that's a more accurate comparison.
Right when Jacob closed his eyes, he had been hearing a hissing sound, expecting sleep to take him. Then a slight, rather odd blip in his awareness caused him to lose his bearings for a moment, but quickly regained them. The hissing continued, and became rather annoying after a bit, considering the nasty headache he currently had. Did he have that before he entered the pod? He wasn’t sure, but he was having a hard time remembering his last moments before he entered the machine, which was odd, as that was just a moment ago. Oh, now the hissing noise is stopping, so Jacob guessed that the doctors realized there was a problem, and were now spooling down the machine to take him out before something disastrous happened.
The hissing noise stopped, and the sound of pistons groaning filled the small cavity instead, along with a notable difference in the positioning of the cryo pod door, specifically moving upward. Ah, now the door is opening, fantastic. Jacob hoped that he could just get this damn experiment underway, without any more delays.
Goddamn the door is slow. At least he could see somewhat outside, as the door had opened up enough to let him see the feet of two people standing outside his little home. Actually, scratch that, three people standing outside, as the door had opened more up to let him see a third person standing behind the pair that were closest to him. He blinked several times to clear the fog from his eyesight, his eyeballs feeling pretty cold, as if he had spent a little in pure winter weather with his eyes open, letting them freeze a bit. Matter of fact, as feeling returned to his body, he felt cold all over. Not so cold that it was painful, but more of a cool uncomfortableness.
Speaking of feeling returning to his body, he felt a rather unpleasant prickling sensation throughout himself, like his entire body had fallen asleep, or if he had just returned from the cold after a long stay in the frigid winter air. He flexed his fingers, or at least tried to. His fingers were encased in a hard plastic glove, molded to fit his hand. It was the same story with the rest of his body, many straps fastened tight enough to restrict his movement, but not enough to restrict his blood flow. He tried to see more than the feet of the unknown people in front of him, as the door was open about halfway now, but the fog, or maybe steam, wafting up from his pod was masking everything else.
Oh yeah, the hissing was back too.
After another eternity of the door just slowly opening, the long-awaited event finally arrived. The door clanked to a stop, now resting somewhere on top of the cryo pod. The hissing noise also came to a stop, seeming to have been the cause of the fog as well, considering how it began to clear up with the end of the abhorrent hissing sound. The fog cleared up fully, allowing him to see a rather strange sight.
Three people in full hazmat suits were standing in front of him, one of the two in front holding an odd device that looked vaguely like a heart monitor. The one with the heart monitor stepped up to him, uttering a single word.
“Please hold still.”
Jacob naturally held still as the person wrapped a sensor on his wrist, then one on his neck. The man then pressed a few buttons on his little machine, and then watched some sort of readout on the screen that Jacob couldn’t make out from his angle. The man stayed like that for about half a minute before taking off the little sensors from his wrist and neck, and then put the device down on some sort of table that Jacob also couldn’t see due to his angle, before nodding to the man beside him.
The pair moved into action, unstrapping and unclamping him in various areas around his body, unrestricting his movement. Jacob didn’t move yet though, as once the pair were done taking off the various inhibitors, the third man in the back stepped up, as if he wanted to speak. The unnamed man grabbed the bottom of his visor, where a small lip was present. The man then used that lip to pull up the plastic covering his face, or at least the layer that was preventing Jacob from seeing his face. The man pulled it up, revealing the doctor, who’s name he still didn’t know. However, something was off about him, though Jacob couldn’t put his finger on it.
“Long time no see Jacob.” The doctor smiles disarmingly, which makes Jacob beg the question of why he would need to be disarmed.
“What do you mean, ‘Long time’? It hasn’t even been half an hour.” Jacob frowns, tilting his head questioningly, though Jacob is pretty sure he already knows the answer to his own question.
The doctor’s smile wavers, and his eyes turn downcast, avoiding Jacob’s.
“Well, ah, you see Jacob, it HAS been a long time. I imagine you just didn’t notice, due to no little input on our part.”
Suddenly, Jacob realized what was off about the doctor. When he had seen him last, the doctor had a look about him that made him seem like he could be in his early thirties or late twenties, with a little margin for error, of course.
However, The doctor now looked like he had aged around a decade, sporting a few new wrinkles that definitely weren’t there before. Instead of being a man just entering his more mature ages, he looked more like a man entering a higher, more responsible position in your standard American technical corporation. To put it shortly, he looked like he was in his forties.
“So you're saying that it's been a year already, and I was just too out of it to notice?” The doctor winced, and opened up his mouth to speak, but Jacob continued talking.
“However, I have noticed that while you said I was supposed to be in here for a year, the actual reality is different. Unless you somehow had a growth spurt, or decided that looking older was a new fashion trend, it's odd that you seem to have aged a decade in what was supposed to be a year of stasis.” Jacob tilted his head, focusing a stare on the doctor. “Tell me, doctor, how long was I out?”
The pair in front of him, having been listening this whole time, looked back at the doctor expectantly. The doctor shook his head, and attempted a smile, though the result looked more like a pained grimace. The doctor then looked up at Jacob, giving him a strange look.
“Noticed that, did you? Well, I suppose you do deserve an explanation. Let's talk about this in a more, comfortable, area.”

Jacob fixed the doctor with another bland stare for the fifteenth time in four minutes.
“So you’re telling me, that the damn CIA kidnapped me, your government organization was dissolved, and now I’m officially dead to the outside world? Not to mention I was asleep for not a year, but a decade?” Jacob said all of this with a tone that might have implied disbelief and anger.
“Well, when you put it like that, it sounds, well, exactly like what happened I suppose, but I wouldn’t put it, well, any sort of other way, so yes.” The doctor, contrary to the facade he was still bravely trying to put up, didn’t appear too comfortable with telling Jacob all of this. After all, who would want to tell an innocent, carefree, bright-eyed young boy, that his family thought him dead, and that he was asleep for a decade as well.
Jacob leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms and breathed out the air he had been holding in.
“Huh.” Jacob didn’t elaborate.
“I’m sure that this might be very alarming to you, but remember that this wasn’t in our control. I’m very sorry for your loss, but just know that we do have therapists and other people that you can talk to on hand, just let us know.” The doctor didn’t seem very proud of this series of unfortunate events happening to the aforementioned carefree child.
“Well, as long as they aren’t dead yet, I’ll be fine.” Jacob shrugs.
The doctor blinks in surprise.
“I- what? Are you sure? Your mental health is very important, and despite what our higher ups at the CIA might say, you are also important as a person.” The doctor had an increasingly worried expression on his face.
“Nah, I think I’m pretty good for now.” Jacob remained seemingly uncaring for his current status as perceived dead by his family, or for his mental health. “So, what happens to me now? I’m assuming I’m not getting executed for lack of further usefulness, or else you wouldn’t be offering me therapists, and I’m not exactly going back out into society, as that would be a rather awkward situation for the CIA. So, that leaves only one more avenue of action.” Jacob leaned forward. “I’m going back in the machine, aren’t I?”
“. . . yes.” The doctor seemed put off by Jacob’s lengthy statement.
Jacob leaned back and nodded, satisfied by his answer. “I have just one question then.”
The doctor cocked an eyebrow.
“Why am I so important? Plenty of people have brain tumors, and yet you guys aren’t kidnapping those people, right? So, what makes this one special?” Jacob tapped the side of his head.
The doctor cleared his throat, seemingly more comfortable to be conversing over a topic more familiar to him, like neuroscience.
“I can do that. Follow me.”

The doctor led Jacob to a room with only one other person inside, that person being an assistant. The lights were off, the only source of illumination being a projector shining on a blank whiteboard, the image being an x-ray of what looked like a brain.
“Well, as I’ve said before, that so-called tumor in your head isn’t exactly behaving like a tumor normally would. In the beginning, when it first appeared, it looked like any old brain tumor, forming in your cerebral cortex. It grew a bit abnormally, but nothing too out of the ordinary.” The doctor pointed at a small marble sized mass that was present inside the aforementioned section of the brain on the projection. “However, that's when things took a turn for the stranger.” The doctor motioned for the assistant to switch to the next slide, which he did.
The diagram now showed the same image as before, which Jacob now knew to be his brain, with the sole difference being that the mass had now enlarged, seemingly spreading what looked like feelers or tentacles outwards, the longest one stretching towards a middle section of the brain.
“After this happened, we were notified through plants, and we took over your medical case, observing the growth of your tumor.” The slide switched again, now showing a larger tumor. It had grown even more feelers, now numbering at five, and the longest one was now in the middle of the brain.
“The tumor had spread itself out, and the longest appendage of it had now entered what we call the anterior insular cortex, or, “ The doctor looked at Jacob. “the empathy center.”
Jacob stared back at the doctor, not showing any outward form of reaction. The doctor looked back towards the projection, clearing his throat.
“Ahem, anyway. As you can probably guess, this was highly irregular behavior from what was supposed to be a simple tumor. And what we realized next was even more shocking.” The assistant clicked to the next slide, this one showing . . . nothing.
Actually, it did show something, Jacob just didn’t notice at first. The tumor was now not a simple mass, but instead had somehow become, fainter, he supposed. It didn’t have any clear separation from his brain, instead, only sections could be made out from the former tumor. It seemed like it had merged with his brain, which wasn’t exactly comforting to Jacob.
“The tumor now couldn’t be described as a simple tumor. We had to deduce that it had somehow become part of your brain, as we couldn’t find any clear definition of where the tumor began and where it ended. We could still technically see the tumor, though it was like it had faded its edges in with your brain, merging with it.” The assistant shut off the projector, and turned the lights back on.
The doctor turned back towards Jacob, with what looked to be a sympathetic expression on his face.
“Now I hope you understand why we want to know what the hell this thing is. If this was some sort of parasite, and if it could spread . . “ The doctor let Jacob figure out the rest on his own.
“Huh, yeah. I wouldn’t really want the world to turn into a reenactment of a certain hit TV adaptation of a certain hit zombie game.” Jacob nodded. “So, how are you gonna go about solving, “ Jacob gestured haphazardly to his head. “This?”
“We . . . aren’t sure yet.” The doctor grimaced. “However, it has only been, well, it's been quite awhile, but we learned a lot from the first go around. We are hoping to gain more data from the next decade, with some new technologies to be used.”
Jacob nodded his head, looking around. “So do I just go back in now?”
“No, actually. The planned procedure is to keep you awake for a minimum of twelve hours, with us taking several tests to determine if any changes have been made to your mental or intellectual state. And also, you are going to have to visit some therapists, that's non-optional.” The doctor replied.
Jacob only grunted in response to that last statement.

Jacob is running on a treadmill, with several devices measuring his various functions.
“Just let us know when you’re getting tired.” The man, Dr. Markus Vasquez by his nametag, repeated for the fifth time.
“And that would be right around now, actually.” Jacob stopped running when Dr. Vasquez pressed the off button.
“Hmm, alright. You’re operating at standard rates for a boy of your age.” Dr. Vasquez writes down notes on his clipboard, probably about him. Or maybe some sort of weird fan fiction about some US president, you never know.
Dr. Vasquez motioned for Jacob to follow him, which Jacob does.
“And that should conclude your physical testing regimen for today.” Dr. Vasquez leads Jacob into a square room about six feet wide, with a couch, a chair, two tables, a bookshelf, and a TV on the wall opposite from the couch.
Then, another doctor walks into the room, holding a clipboard and a sheet of papers. Dr. Vasquez and the new doctor share a few silent words, ones that Jacob can’t make out, before Dr. Vasquez walks out of the room. The new doctor, a Dr. Sophia Vasel by her nametag, sits down on the chair next to the couch.
“Hey again Jacob. I’m here to-” Dr. Vasel begins, but Jacob cuts her off.
“Oh wait, aren’t you one of the people who strapped me in that pod a decade ago?” Jacob tilts his head questioningly.
Dr. Vasel blinks. “Erm, yes. Anyway, I’m just here to give you a couple tests, alright? Just standard procedure.” Dr. Vasel flips through her clipboard. “Here is the first one.”
Jacob started again. “No signing any forms or asking for consent or anything?”
Dr. Vasel hid her apparent frustration admirably. “Uh, no. Our policy doesn’t require us to do that. Anyway, if we could get on with the test?” Dr. Vasel pulled out a pen. “Just some questions for the first one.”

Jacob was a bit bored.
Actually, that was an understatement. He was VERY bored. There, a much more apt statement.
After a large amount of rigorous testing, physical, mental, biological, the whole shebang, they had basically left him in the small room and told him to entertain himself for the remaining eight hours, twenty-seven minutes, and five seconds. After that, he would be going back into cryosleep. They gave him access to a good amount of literature from his time, as well as giving him a rather generous library of online media, also from his time. However, they had severely underestimated his preferences, as the majority of the online material consisted of children for the age of ten, and all the good books he had already read several times over.
So yes, he was quite bored. So bored, in fact, that even pacing around and thinking couldn’t sate his hunger for entertainment, as the intense migraine he had prevented him from running any sort of complicated scenario that could even mildly entertain him. So, he was forced to turn to his old friend.
History.
A decade ought to have yielded a good amount of entertaining historical fruit, especially when you consider the rather hot pot that was world politics at the time of the beginning of his short nap. So, he had requested a book that recapped everything important that had happened in the last ten years. And how interesting it was.
Standing out the most in terms of the global stage, the American intervention in the Russo-Ukrainian war, pushing the Russians not just out of Ukraine, but also reclaiming Crimea for the Ukrainians as well. This had happened due to Russia repeatedly threatening to use nuclear weapons in the war, and so America finally had to intervene, managing to push them out of Ukraine in just two and a half months. And it seems Russia was bluffing, as no nukes were ever launched.
However, war wasn’t the only highlight of the last decade, as a miniature space race actually occurred not between the East and the West, but SpaceX and NASA were both racing for the clout and money that being the first to have a human land on Mars would be. It ended up with a SpaceX victory, and not a small amount of a budget increase.
Nanotechnology had also progressed, yet not as much as other avenues, as it's mostly been used for small-scale construction supposedly. Congress was being quite strict on the Supreme Court’s ruling. However, some small advancements had been made in the effectiveness and build of a standard nanobot, making them considerably cheaper and easier to make. However, the availability of nanobots was mostly limited to either private firms or large corporations willing to invest in the product.
As entertaining as history was, it wasn’t enough to sustain him for more than an hour, so he resigned himself to sitting, standing, pacing, and occasionally watching kids cartoons for the rest of his time. He wasn’t going to ask for his benefactors to obtain some new content for him to watch, not because they couldn’t, no, they likely could do anything, but because his pride would be too injured if he did. Yes, a truly brilliant mind we have here.

“This feels familiar.” Jacob mused, his words certainly pertaining to the scenario that he was currently in.
Dr. Vasel and another doctor were strapping him in, securing his hands and feet in molded plastic to restrict movement, and straps to secure his arms and legs. This time, a little hat with a dozen blinking electrodes was added to his menagerie of devices. They had also given him a fresh edition of nanobots, these ones supposedly more efficient by two percent. Yes, such a great increase. However, they also fed off the energy his own body produced, so that theoretically gave them an infinite life, as long as he was alive.
The doctors finished up strapping him into the machine, giving him a final once over to make sure nothing bad happens again. They stepped back, and began to run diagnostics on their computers to make sure everything electronic was in order as well.
Jacob sighed. He had a feeling that this set of actions would become an agonizingly long procedure.
After a very long fifteen minutes, the unnamed doctor, who had come down during the diagnostics, nodded to an assistant, and he began pressing buttons. The machine clicked and hissed, and the door came down, blissfully quicker this time. After just thirty seconds, the door sealed shut, and Jacob saw the doctor through the plastic. The doctor walked out of sight, as the foggy plastic couldn’t see that far, though the doctor clearly went somewhere where he could talk to Jacob, as he heard the doctor’s voice over what sounded like an intercom inside the pod.
“You can hear me, right Jacob?” The doctor asked.
“Uh, yep.” Jacob replied.
“Very good. As there isn’t anything else we have to do on our end, we’ll be sending you off right about now. Any questions before you’re frozen?” The doctor inquired.
“None that I can recall.” Jacob said.
“Then we’ll see you again in ten years.” The doctor said.
The intercom shut off with a crackle, and the hissing noise came back, probably meaning he was gonna fall asleep any time now. He wondered what the world would look like in another decade, bu-

We take tickets for a cycle, a Ring, and as many Parsifals as we have appetite for, and when the last performance is over the railway-station is crowded; no longer with the Bohemianism of London and Paris, but with the snobbery (I use the word in its French sense) of both capitals. The trolleys are piled with aristocratic luggage, and the porters are followed by anxious valets; ladies in long, fashionable dust-cloaks are beset by maids with jewel-cases in their hands. Among this titled crowd one can still pick out the student (the professional musician still goes to Bayreuth) and those who really love music, and who go to Bayreuth for the art of the Master—like our friends, the politician and his wife and daughter.
Between the acts of the Götterdämmerung we had heard arrangements being made to be present at other music festivals. It seemed that a considerable part of the audience was going to Munich to hear Mozart. For the last day or two everybody seemed to be muttering Cosi fan Tutti, an opera never given in England. On a former occasion Edward and I had gone to Munich, but we had not heard it; and I would have preferred to follow Mozart, but we were going in a different direction, in quest of other music—northward, a long and tedious journey. For Edward had decided that the revival of drama which the success of The Heather Field had started in Ireland must be accompanied by a revival of all the arts—painting, sculpture, and music. For landscape and portrait-painting he thought he could rely on Dermod O'Brien, who had decided to come to Ireland. A number of chapels had been spoilt by German stained glass, but Miss Purser had promised to engage a man whose father had been intimately connected with the Pre-Raphaelite movement in England, and under her direction ecclesiastical art would flourish again in Ireland. John Hughes would revive Donatello and Edward Palestrina. He told me that Archbishop Walsh had been approached, and that he thought he would be able to persuade him to accept a donation of ten thousand pounds to establish a choir in the cathedral upon the strict understanding, of course, that the choir was only to sing Vittoria, Palestrina, Orlando di Lasso, Francesca de Près, and the other writers, bearing equally picturesque names, who had, if I may borrow a phrase from Evelyn Innes, gravitated round the great Roman composer.
It seemed to me that the analogy he drew between the Italian Renaissance and the Irish was a false one. The Italians had imported nothing, but had re-created all the arts simultaneously. This view was, however, not acceptable, and in the return journey between Nuremberg and Mainz, Edward pointed out that the Italian Renaissance was not as original as it seemed at first sight. It was indebted largely to antiquity, and its flavour was due to the spirit of the Middle Ages which still lingered in the sixteenth century, and in support of this theory he affirmed that Palestrina had used plain-chant melodies in all his Masses.
Turning them into pattern music, I interjected. If you want religion in music, let your choir sing only plain chant.
Edward feared that the congregation would deem that monotonous, and I said, If concessions are going to be made—, and the conversation dropped, for we were going to a festival of pattern music far away in the North of Germany, to a town called Münster, whither, I venture to say, very few have ever wandered, though it is well known by name, on account of Meyerbeer's opera Le Prophète. We all know the prayer that the prophet sings at the end of the third act before he enters the town, and the great beauty of the fourth act—the cathedral scene in which John of Leyden refuses to recognise his mother. A great act! It was not the fashion of those times to write fifth acts, and Meyerbeer finished his opera with a couple of songs of no great merit, and the blowing up of the town by John of Leyden, who perishes amid the ruins.
But in history he perished quite differently. After a few weeks of revelry Münster was taken by assault, and John of Leyden and his companions were put into iron cages, in which they could neither stand, nor sit, nor lie, and in them they remained on exhibition, hung up some thirty feet above the pavement on the principal street, for three days, before they were torn to pieces with red-hot hooks, by order of the good Bishop. These cages still hang in the principal street, regarded, no doubt, as objects of great historical interest. That they are, no one will contest, yet one cannot help feeling that they would be better out of sight in a museum, for they certainly inspire hatred of the Roman Church in the heart of every passer-by, and it is hardly going too far to say that to these cages, and to the memories which they evoke, is owing the preservation of all the original aspects of the town, so grey and austere, without a sign anywhere of life, of modern thought or aspiration, without a picture-gallery, without a painter, without a writer, a fitting town, indeed, for a festival of archaic music.
Edward had written to his conductor, the man to whom the revival of Palestrina was to be entrusted, to come over and when we were not in the cathedral—which was not often—we used to spend the time wandering about the grey, calico-coloured streets, Edward admiring the fifteenth-century roofs, of which there are a great many, and the arcades; the conductor and myself thinking how the minutes were bringing us nearer another concert. He was a man of quiet and neutral intelligence, and it would have been pleasant to go away for a walk in the country with him. He would have liked to escape from the patter of this archaic music which he already foresaw it was his fate to teach and conduct till the end of his days. But to slip away between a Gloria and a Credo (my suggestion to him) would have offended his burly task-master and perhaps have lost him his job. He dared not even show for one instant that the music bored him, and I hardly dared either, and resisted Edward with difficulty at the door of the cathedral. The choice lay between a motet by Josquin des Près and The Tale of a Town. The third act needed revision, and I not infrequently took the manuscript away with me and forgot it in the pleasant shade of the avenue that encircles the town; and sometimes I took the manuscript with me to the Zoological Gardens, beguiled there by the finest lion ever known, that is to say, the finest ever seen or imagined by me—an extraordinary, silent and monumental beast that used to lie, his paw tucked in front of him, a gazing-stock for me and a group of children. We moved on subdued by his wonderful presence, majestic, magnificent, forlorn, ashamed before his great, brown, melancholy eyes, full of dreams of the desert of long ago, perhaps of the very day when an Arab held him, a whelp, well above the high, red-pommelled saddle, and the dam was speared and shot by other Arabs in the mêlée that happened amid some loose rocks and brushwood.
The blue sky of Münster, and the dust of Münster, and the silence and the loneliness of Munster, often made me think I should like to enter his cage. It was such a splendid one!—built out into the garden, a little park with two tree-trunks and some rocks, a dome-shaped cage in which the great beast could trot or climb, if he were so disposed, but I never saw him except sunning himself in front of his bars. He seemed as lonely as myself, and I often imagined us twain, side by side, The Tale of a Town in my left hand, while with the right I combed his great, brown mane for him. Which would he resent—the reading or the combing? Speculation on this point amused me, and urged me towards the risk, and perhaps might have induced me to undertake it, if I had not met a fox in the circular avenue. The red, bushy animal came there on a chain, and when his master sat on the other end of the bench on which I was sitting, the fox often hopped up between us, treating me with the politeness due to a visitor, a politeness which was requited next by a cutlet. On cutlets our friendship throve until the end of the week, and had I known German it might have become permanent. The fox seemed quite willing, for though well behaved with his master, his affection for me was so spontaneous that I think it would have lasted. The peasant, too, might have been persuaded to sell his fox, and if he refused a sovereign it would be because he did not know its value, or because he would not include the chain. As this point could not be settled without some knowledge of German, I strove to explain to him by signs that he was to remain where he was, until I brought back somebody who could sprechen Deutsch. There was no hope of a passer-by who could speak English—there were no passers-by; the whole population of Munster was in the cathedral. It had been going there all the morning, headed by Edward and his conductor, to hear several Masses by Palestrina, and they had started off again in the afternoon to listen to Orlando di Lasso. Edward had pressed me to accompany them, saying that the opportunity might not occur again to hear a work by that great Fleming; but one concert a day of contrapuntal music was enough for me, and I had pleaded my duty regarding a possible reconstruction of the third act, which I was anxious to submit to him in the evening.
He is in the cathedral, listening, I said, and tired by now of Orlando di Lasso; he will be glad of an excuse to get away.

These are my notes for my video on Blood Meridian. Will also upload reviews of Chapters 11 and 23 specifically, as requested by a few people. Enjoy!

blood meridian notes
This lecture is founded specifically on the work of Dr. Michael Lynn Crews, assistant professor at Regent University in Virginia. In a 2014 paper he plumbed the Wittliff Collection at Alkek Library in San Marcos, Texas, where McCarthy has provided all of his notes, drafts, and correspondences. He essentially made a list of influences and explored evidential links. We’ll be looking at some of the most prominent today, but the link to the study itself is in the description if you would like to look into it more. All of the authors are very pertinent to McCarthy’s work, and he is an insanely well-read person, but I chose these three in particular because they are, as far as I can see, most relevant to the narrative itself. We will be looking at Oswald Spengler, Herman Melville, and Lord Byron - but there is no reason to stop at these. I strongly encourage you to look through all of Dr. Crews’ study in order to get a bigger picture of the work.
Now, this discussion will primarily be designed to help early understanding of the book. Byron and Melville constitute kind of a spinal role in this book while Spengler has thematic presence in the book’s events. Other authors feature just as heavily and centrally, but the three I’ve chosen bear the signature of the book pretty well: will to power, the concept of nature, the human heart. The will to power is obviously a hegelian and Nietzschean concept, which we will touch on, but we will do it by looking at Spengler, who was directly influenced by the predecessor. This will be about a one-hour video just to be square - so that it’s long enough to listen to but not too long to turn off too early.
Introduce McCarthy and Blood Meridian
Today, we’re actually going to start with Byron. This is the easiest road into Blood Meridian in particular for a very specific reason. Crews notes a 1981 letter in which McCarthy MENTIONS Byron - “which is not surprising.” Lord Byron is one of the most famous writers in the English language and McCarthy frequents classic literary avenues. Crews quotes McCarthy as writing:
“I don’t know if I agree about writers being the only dependable readers. I remember reading once the names of the writers Byron admired – none of whom anyone has heard of since.”
We will be returning to this quote again. For now, we know that McCarthy knows who Byron is. Crews notes the similarities between Byron’s anti-hero and many of McCarthy’s protagonists - not least of which is the protag of Blood Meridian, The Kid. But as we move through the first paragraph of the book, the poet’s influence on McCarthy will become very clear.
Byron traveled a lot and made an incredible impression on culture in his day. His poetry is authoritative, full-bodied and existential. Among his most famous works is Stanzas to the Po. Byron was in Italy at the time, near the end of his life: he was in love with a married woman named Teresa Gamba Ghiselli. His infatuation was so intense that it would follow him to his grave. Ghiselli was brilliant, sociable, and in many ways a celebrity in Venice. When she became gravely ill in 1819 Byron was ready to end his own life. They eloped in 1821 and grew bored, then Byron left for Greece, where he would die a few years later. Stanzas to the Po was composed in 1819, when he confronted the river Po itself as a kind of counsel, and felt affirmed in his romantic ambitions. This is the 11th verse:

Byron was a man controlled by his extraordinary vision of the world, controlled by passion and a slave to beauty in every sense. It is this obsession with what is beautiful that will feature centrally in Blood Meridian - but the beauty itself will be a fact of the will, and perhaps not a remark about the world itself.

• “For you, intelligence is not one thing among many. Every day it devours everything. It would like to put an end to a new state of society every morning. A man intoxicated on it believes his own thoughts are legal decisions or facts themselves born of the crowd and time. He confuses his quick changes of heart with the imperceptible variation of real forms and enduring beings.
• “This is the law by which the intelligence despises law, and you encourage its violence! You are in love with Intelligence, until it frightens you. For your ideas are terrifying and your hearts are faint. Your acts of pity and cruelty are absurd, committed with no calm, as if they were Irresistible. Finally, you fear blood more and more. Blood and time.”
• The Chinese man in Valery’s short story seems to be suggesting that Western ideals improperly conflate our whims with law itself. To him, war and blood are mere facts of life, a matter of business. But somehow he harangues the visitor, a European, for his fear of blood and his obsession with revolution, a kind of improper mode of thinking. Of course, Valery himself was a European, and so the story is really a Westerner haranguing the West as weak-willed, incapable of discerning things that are old hat to other more ancient civilizations. This would invite the reader to reconsider their squeamishness and be on the alert for entities that might lead us astray by taking hold of our naivete.

• Jacob Boehme, 1575-1624, Lutheran theologian and mystic
• Boehme was influential among the enlightenment-era philosophers like Goethe and Hegel, helping to inspire movements like German idealism and romanticism
• Boehme was sometimes seen as heretical in his lifetime, and his genius was not recognized until the very end of his life. He was actually what we’d call “working class” but still had command of theological rhetoric.
• Interestingly, Boehme believed that Adam & Eve’s expulsion from paradise was necessary in the formation of the world. This was not a popular view at the time, but it illustrates his singular voice, and it’s an element to understanding Blood Meridian.
• Six Theosophic Points

Discusses the nature of darkness and evil. He quotes Christ as saying, in John 8:44, “The devil is a liar and murderer from the beginning.” He describes “all forms” as being adverse to one another, each of them a figure of deception. He says darkness is “terrified” of light, even though the light seems to exist within each dark form. A dark form is a shapeshifter, can take on many forms. Point 11 reads:
“The dark life is like a terror, where the flash and terror is always mounting upwards, as if it would quit the life and fly out above it. And hence arises pride, so that the devil is always wishing to be above God; it is his proprium, his life’s figure is so, and he cannot do otherwise. Just as a poison rages and pierces, as if it would break loose from the member;”
Then, the translation I found had slightly more breadth than McCarthy’s edition:
“And yet it is not to be thought that the life of darkness therefore sinks down into misery, that it would forget itself as if it were sorrowful. there is no sorrowing; but what with us on earth is sorrowing according to this property, is in the darkness power and joy according to the property of the darkness. For sorrowfulness is a thing that is swallowed up in death. But death and dying is the life of the darkness, just as anguish is the life of the poison. The greater the anguish becomes in the poison, the stronger becomes the poison-life, as is to be seen in the external poison.”

Actually refers to the Bodo cranium, which is a fossil from an extinct hominin. It was found in 1976 and is actually 600,000 years old, not 300,000. Further reinforces McCarthy’s point, that this kind of “evil” or lust for violence predates civilization by a dizzying margin.

• People marginalized and conquered by the machinery of history. Early reference to Spengler.
• He is shot after leading a brief stint as a pugilist, and when he recovers McCarthy includes this narrative monologue:
• “Only now is the child finally divested of all that he has been. His origins are become remote as is his destiny and not again in all the world’s turning will there be terrains so wild and barbarous to try whether the stuff of creation may be shaped to man’s will or whether his own heart is not another kind of clay.”
• The Kid is disconnected both from his origins and from his destiny. Both are currently indeterminate. He continues to harbor a lust for “mindless violence.” What we see here is a free or otherwise unvexed soul. He could do anything at this point, but he maintains the will to determine his own fate.
• [The Judge will be a kind of antagonist in this way: he wants to control others and enlist them in his war against creation. The Kid will be freed from physical slavery by the Judge, but will be forced to conform to his habit as a scalper and murderer and deceiver. The Kid will resist determination and slavery by digressing from the Judge’s precepts. It is clear from the event soon after this section that the Judge has powers of manipulation. The Kid will only follow the scalpers because they freed him from literal bondage; his heart cannot be molded like other people’s; he will act in his own interests alone, which infuriates the Judge.]
• But to continue along:
• “The passengers are a diffident lot. They cage their eyes and no man asks another what it is that brings him here. He sleeps on the deck, a pilgrim among others. He watches the dim shore rise and fall. Gray seabirds gawking. Flights of the pelicans coastwise above the gray swells.”
• Frequent allusion to animal-like imagery. The Kid seems intent on distinguishing himself from others, and when he’s a pugilist he is happy to distance himself from others. He will refuse to be defined or restrained by others, and is liberated in his destruction of unfamiliar things.
• The animal imagery shows how the natural world is set in very rigid motions and patterns. Animals are like machines, devices that respond to and operate within nature. People who are slave to reason or patterns of thought are “dumb animals,” as will be later described by the Kid. Death and violence are both a liberation from this enslaved, sundered moral existence and an affirmation of the killer. Those who do not embrace violence, who remain ambivalent, are prey to those who believe. We will also see that religion is a poor refuge from this matter.
• Ultimately, the Kid is able to serve as the narrative keyhole AND as the protagonist because he seems to be one of the only people left with powers of observation. So many characters in this book, or even the animals, seem so set in their ways and blind to the world that you rarely feel bad when they die. One of the true horrors in this book is the loss of consciousness, even if the world is almost too horrifying to continue looking at. What we fear more than anything else is weakness, which would betray the truth, that we are struggling to master the waves, so to speak. That “strength” of spirit will actually be replaced by brutality, which is a mark of weakness. Only the Kid seems to realize that his peers are actually weak, rather than strong in this sense. And only a few people even seem to have a preserved will. The Will is possibly the largest set piece in this book.

• We come to Nacogdoches, where the Kid joins a revival tent hosted by a preacher who has apparently been at it for “two weeks,” so long before the protag arrives. Reverend Green is warning that Christ will walk beside you no matter what, so he asks if the crowd would allow Christ to follow them down into “hellhole yonder,” or into temptation and sin.
• At that moment the Kid is approached by someone described as a “teamster” who suddenly enters the tent and asks him, “You ever see such a place for rain?”
• The Kid says that he only just got there, and the man says “Well it beats all I ever seen.”
• We are entering into a scene of sorrow. Something tragic is about to happen, but we will judge people’s behavior in this situation.
• Another man enters who is towering and bald, and he will later be revealed as The Judge, a central character in the novel. The Judge walks to the front of the congregation and announces confidently that the Reverend is a fraud and has been charged with having “congress” with an eleven-year-old girl and a goat. The crowd is incensed and descends upon the reverend as people swear on his life and gunshots erupt. The Kid and the teamster escape before the whole tent collapses and they meet at the bar, where the bald man buys everyone a drink, described as the judge for the first time. The Judge admits that he completely made all of it up and had never even heard of the Reverend before he arrived. Everyone laughs, despite the fact that he had just suborned murder.
• The fact that everyone hesitates before they laugh is absolutely crucial to this novel. They wait a moment to reflect on what had just happened. Remember that it is pouring rain, almost like an enjoinder to sorrow, and the crowd murdered the reverend, and those who rose to the occasion of violence are absolutely guilty. But they just laugh. They find the whole thing funny, probably because they do not want to take responsibility for themselves. They don’t want to admit to the sorrow just perpetrated. They would rather focus on the judge, almost as a sanctuary from their own culpability. Those who follow the Judge’s words, who commit atrocity, think vicariously through the Judge and become enslaved by him. By forcing culpability into their hearts, they rescind their individuality and become automatons to his will. The secret sauce in this process is intelligence and the spoken word, which is weaponized to seize men’s souls.
• The Judge has already matched Boehme’s description of “the darkness.” Darkness is a state hostile to light, in which nothing “sorrowful” is actually such, but is a kind of rapture. This scene occurred while it was raining heavily, as if to emphasize everyone’s indifference to the sorrowfulness of the event.
• The kid is there for “sixteen days” drinking his money away. He gets in a fight and is seemingly saved by Toadvine, who brings him along to brutally murder a man in a hotel, which leads to them razing the structure. As the kid is leaving town on a mule he sees men standing around the burning saloon with “empty buckets,” as if nothing can stop such an inferno, and the judge regards him as he leaves town, smiling at the Kid.
• What we have witnessed in the first chapter of Blood Meridian is a complete sacrifice of our moral precepts in exchange for our enjoinder to exact reckoning. The Judge’s falsehood lampooned the congregation’s credulousness and sense of moral obligation. The destruction of the Reverend was, in fact, a total affirmation of the Will, callous to truth or moral uprightness or mediation. In a world governed purely by unleashed will, things tend to burn down.

FAUST:
A figure in German folklore championed by Goethe’s representation. Faust was a learned person who sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in exchange for all knowledge. Something being “Faustian” means that one exchanges their moral or ethical stature for material or intellectual gain. The devil was represented by Mephistopheles, who appears as a black dog.
WILL TO POWER:
Schopenhauer first coined the idea of “will to live” to describe biological motivations. Interestingly, Schopenhauer held that the Will itself is the most important, even more than our sense of safety or our. very concept of existence, because the Will somehow exists without acknowledgement of either.
From his “Psychological Observations”:
“The will to live, which forms the inmost core of every living being, exhibits itself most conspicuously in the higher order of animals, that is, the cleverer ones; and so in them the nature of the will may be seen and examined most clearly. For in the lower orders its activity is not so evident; it has a lower degree of objectivation; whereas, in the class which stands above the higher order of animals, that is, in men, reason enters in; and with reason comes discretion, and with discretion, the capacity of dissimulation, which throws a veil over the operations of the will. And in mankind, consequently, the will appears without its mask only in the affections and the passions.
“And this is the reason why passion, when it speaks, always wins credence, no matter what the passion may be; and rightly so. For the same reason the passions are the main theme of poets and the stalking horse of actors. The conspicuousness of the will in the lower order of animals explains the delight we take in dogs, apes, cats, etc.; it is the entirely naive way in which they express themselves that gives us so much pleasure.
“The sight of any free animal going about its business undisturbed, seeking its food, or looking after its young, or mixing in the company of its kind, all the time being exactly what it ought to be and can be,—what a strange pleasure it gives us! Even if it is only a bird, I can watch it for a long time with delight; or a water rat or a hedgehog; or better still, a weasel, a deer, or a stag. The main reason why we take so much pleasure in looking at animals is that we like to see our own nature in such a simplified form. There is only one mendacious being in the world, and that is man. Every other is true and sincere, and makes no attempt to conceal what it is, expressing its feelings just as they are.”
Nietzsche, looking back on philosophers from the first half of the 19th century, took this idea and formed it into “Machtgelüst,” or “desire for power.”
From “Human, All too Human”:
“Herder.—Herder fails to be all that he made people think he was and himself wished to think he was. He was no great thinker or discoverer, no newly fertile soil with the unexhausted strength of a virgin forest. But he possessed in the highest degree the power of scenting the future, he saw and picked the first-fruits of the seasons earlier than all others, and they then believed that he had made them grow. Between darkness and light, youth and age, his mind was like a hunter on the watch, looking everywhere for transitions, depressions, convulsions, the outward and visible signs of internal growth. The unrest of spring drove him to and fro, but he was himself not the spring.”

• Nietzsche furthers discussion in The Gay Science, under item 13:
• “On the doctrine of the feeling of power. - Benefiting and hurting others are ways of exercising one's power over them - that is all one wants in such cases! We hurt those to whom we need to make our power perceptible, for pain is a much more sensitive means to that end than pleasure: pain always asks for the cause, while pleasure is inclined to stop with itself and not look back. We benefit and show benevolence toward those who already depend on us in some way (that is, who are used to thinking of us as their causes); we want to increase their power because we thus increase our own, or we want to show them the advantage of being in our power - that way, they will be more satisfied with their situation and more hostile towards and willing to fight against the enemies of our power.”
• He concludes by saying, “Compassion is the most agreeable feeling for those who have little pride and no prospect of great conquests; for them, easy prey - and that is what those who suffer are - is something enchanting. Compassion is praised as the virtue of prostitutes.”
• But the concept of Will to Power came into fuller form in Thus Spoke Zarathrustra, a book about a hermit (Zarathrustra) sequestered for a century who comes out to learn that God has died. He travels to a nearby town and finds people witnessing a spectacle, telling them that in the absence of God they must allow for an “overman” or “übermensch” to claim this position. They scorn him for his views. He states that people must be willing to die in order to allow this übermensch to succeed. Eventually, there’s an accident, and a man on a tight rope falls to his death. Only the hermit has any concern for the dead, hiding his body in the woods and vowing to never mix with the crowds again.
• Later, the hermit has a vision in which he conceives of the Wille zur Macht, or will to power. It is an elusive concept, but he illustrates it through examples:
• “The ignorant, to be sure, the people—they are like a river on which a boat floateth along: and in the boat sit the estimates of value, solemn and disguised.”
• The river reminds me directly of Byron, who is essentially addressing the Po as a stage for his passions.
• In TSZ, rather than trying to fit the “Will” into a mechanistic scheme of biological motivations, he simply asserts that the will to power transcends all other motivations, even the will to survive. It is even permissible for the weak to support the strong in their place:
• “That to the stronger the weaker shall serve—thereto persuadeth he his will who would be master over a still weaker one. That delight alone he is unwilling to forego.
• “And as the lesser surrendereth himself to the greater that he may have delight and power over the least of all, so doth even the greatest surrender himself, and staketh—life, for the sake of power.”
• It even transcends the concept of good and evil, and here we see an idea later paraphrased by the Judge:
• “Verily, I say unto you: good and evil which would be everlasting—it doth not exist! Of its own accord must it ever surpass itself anew.
• With your values and formulae of good and evil, ye exercise power, ye valuing ones: and that is your secret love, and the sparkling, trembling, and overflowing of your souls.
• But a stronger power groweth out of your values, and a new surpassing: by it breaketh egg and egg-shell.
• And he who hath to be a creator in good and evil—verily, he hath first to be a destroyer, and break values in pieces.”

Oswald Spengler, 1880-1936, was a German philosopher and scholar. He wrote “The Decline of the West” in 1922, which was hugely popular. He would not live to see the cataclysmic Second World War, and despite initially voting for Hitler he soon turned around and was ostracized for his opposition to the status quo. Spengler opposed antisemitism. He is still known for his general criticism of liberalism among Islamist circles.
In Decline of the West, Spengler casts a society as a cultural organism that can live and die in intervals, and asserts that the Western project is coming to an end. Rather than taking an overtly pessimistic view, however, he aquires Goethe’s concept of becoming and changing. The German word in the title, Untergang, is often translated as “Decline,” but “untergang” did not have necessarily doom-like resonance with Spengler. He nearly used the word “vollendung,” which is more like “fulfillment.” This probably concerns the Judge’s ideas directly — the idea that the sunset or twilight of mankind is somehow also the completion of his project. But “completion” is a complicated reality and not necessarily straightforward; the completion could be a realization of the warfaring creature or a concession to our nature in a more abstract sense. I don’t think there’s a straightforward solution to this obscure detail: I believe the book simply illustrates the triumph of the will over all other conventions, with violence merely serving as a means to an end for the Judge.
Spengler discusses Goethe and Nietzsche almost back to back in Decline of the West. He describes classical civilization as a situation of breaks from destiny: the advancements from classical to new, like Athens to Paris, Aristotle to Kant, Alexander to Napoleon. Rather than purchasing the idea that his contemporary West “inherited” and continued classical tradition, he actually believes the connection is aesthetic and superficial. He suggests that it is more productive to identify how “alien” the classical world truly is to us moderns: as if we share anything with them.
But Spengler actually frames Nietzsche as being lost in his idealization of the classical world, an accuses him of speaking to a “philological mirror.” And rather than buying into the “ancient-medieval-modern” theory of history, Spengler believes history occurs more organically as a sequence in which successive iterations do not necessarily resemble past examples, exactly like a transforming organism.
So when we see the word “Evening” or “Sunset” or “Twilight” of the West in this sense, what we are actually observing, at the moment it is uttered, is the product of this historical sequence. In the context of Blood Meridian, The Evening Redness in the West, we are observing a new iteration of history derived not from an original point but from what has developed in the interim.
This gives new meaning to characters being “remote from their origins,” and it casts light on the Kid’s abandonment of the “poets whose names are now lost” in a house where his birth sacrificed his own mother. Moving West, the human race must become something new, but maybe we are not willing to admit what it is we must become.
The Judge’s destruction of artifacts may also serve to drive a wedge between the truth of history and our fallacious inclination to depict history as one long, linear narrative. The “thread” of history, according to Spengler, is frayed and tangential. Ossification of worldviews may act against our interests — Spengler distinguishes between cultural and zoological determinisms in history. While the “West,” which is a cultural construct, may come to an end, this is trivial in the grand scheme of things. In light of Spengler’s book “Man and Technics,” however, which does have quite a pessimistic outlook, he warns that whereas “culture” was previously our focus, soon its moment’s slow expiration will give way to the often-overlooked technical world, which can effortlessly replace our sacred concerns with the absolutely mundane. But what he truly fears is the sacrifice of the soul in exchange for a purely technical life:
“ For, in reality, technics is immemorially old, and moreover it is not
something historically specific, but something immensely general. It
extends far beyond mankind, back into the life of the animals, indeed of all animals. It is distinctive of the animal, in contrast to the plantwise, type of living that it is capable of moving freely in space and possesses some measure, great or small, of self-will and independence of Nature as a whole, and that, in possessing these, it is obliged to maintain itself against Nature and to give its own being some sort of a significance, some sort of a content, and some sort of a superiority. If, then, we would attach a significance to technics, we must start from the soul, and that alone. ”
With regard to Decline of the West, Spengler is consistent in distinguishing the cultural arc of history from the purely biological, asserting that technique is a hallmark of all life. He then issues some startingly Judge-like remarks:
“Technics is the tactics of living; it is the inner form of which the procedure of conflict — the conflict that is identical with Life itself — is the outward expression. This is the second error that has to be avoided. Technics is not to be understood in terms of the implement. What matters is not how one fashions things, but what one does with them; not the weapon, but the battle. Modern warfare, in which the decisive element is tactics — that is, the technique of running the war, the techniques of inventing, producing, and handling the weapons being only items in the process as a whole — points to a general truth.”
Spengler’s approach to technique is almost frighteningly sober, identifying that our underlying nature is not beholden to ephemeral conceptions, but extends far beyond the narrow horizon of our conceits. As we consider “The Evening Redness in the West,” it is helpful to identify that we are coming into a twilight of an era and into a more faithful inheritance of our nature, one that preceded our short-lived projects and will long outlive it.
Spengler, in Decline, notes the marginalization of great cities, people, and cultures throughout history — how Florence, Rome, Athens hardly command the renown they once did, and that this is typical in history.
“…that many famous old-noble families, descendants of the men who defeated the Celts and the Samnites, lost their ancestral homes through standing apart from the wild rush of speculation and were reduced to renting wretched apartments; that, while along the Appian Way there arose the splendid and still wonderful tombs of the financial magnates, the corpses of the people were thrown along with animal carcases and town refuse into a monstrous common grave — till in Augustus’s time it was banked over for the avoidance of pestilence and so became the site of Maecenas’s renowned park…”
The decline of the “West” is little more than a natural progression of time to Spengler, and it may be that some refuse to be cast out of the limelight of history.
To summarize and conclude:

• The Judge as a faustian figure no longer wishes to exist as a piece of the environment. He would not like to remain in his earthly nature.
• Dr. Crews calls McCarthy’s view of history “pessimistic,” which I have already disagreed with. But he expounds on Spengler’s theory of the Faustian exchange, describing how Europe has sold its soul in order to unlock boundless intelligence and capability.
• Crews notes a quote from the Judge:

• He wishes to crack into the earth, break into forms in order to harvest and acquire the power within them. The earth as an egg is something precious, that we instinctually wish to preserve; he would like to break it open and take that which lies within. • Melville was an American author who worked on ships for a large part of his life and tried to create a career as a writer. Although his work was rarely acknowledged or even noticed in his lifetime, posthumously he would go down as one of the greatest writers in the English language. Never give up, folks.
• His magnum opus is Moby Dick, the story of a whaling vessel whose captain is determined to capture a legendary “white” sperm whale that had once lamed him. Of course it ends in tragedy, but the plot itself is almost entirely irrelevant. Every “chapter” is actually like a prosaic tone poem, featuring paralyzng turns of phrase and flourishes that strike at the heart of our existential and moral concerns. Some of the most innocuous subjects create some of the most piercing and unforgettable passages. Combined with Milton’s Paradise Lost, the scope and intensity of Melville’s prose almost certainly had a direct influence on McCarthy’s own work, which embodies King James rhetoric, epic meditation and jaw-dropping visuals. Possibly the first high-definition book?
• There are multiple passages in Blood Meridian that draw almost directly from Moby Dick, as Crews points out. Crews’ key is the term “federated along one keel,” a famous term Melville used to describe how the sailors, despite hailing from a multitude of backgrounds, are now in the same boat, literally. McCarthy writes in Blood Meridian: “Each man scanned the terrain and the movements of the least of creatures were logged into their collective cognizance until they were federated with invisible wires of vigilance and advanced upon that landscape with a single resonance.”
• McC also betrays the current state of the will within these men — they are all strung along together like a chain gang almost, seeing the world with one eye. In the same way, Captain Ahab’s men are stuck on the boat with him and they slowly realize that Ahab is out of his mind and probably on a suicide mission. The Judge has a similar fatalism, but it seems to be a fatalism he will invariably survive.
• Crews’ associations between the authors is not very long, but I think he is avoiding the infinitely larger question of the union of meaning, which is simply too large in scope for a study showing literary infulences.
• Moby Dick is a long, elaborate, Homeric and very enigmatic work. No one seems to have a clear idea about what Melville is actually saying, and it has been construed as a huge number of things. Obviously, he is commenting on a Christian worldview and makes plenty of transparent comments on existence directly, but there is clearly a world beyond the words themselves. Also, feel free to send your own interpretations of Moby Dick and I’ll read them out on the next video; I will not pretend to have any authority on Moby Dick, which really does deserve a wide interpretation.
• In Moby Dick, the narrator invites the reader, “Call me Ishmael.” This injunction to “call” him Ishmael may already cast suspicion on the reality of the author’s words. Is that his name, or only in the story? Ishmael was a bastard of Abraham who was disowned, and Ahab was the name of a mad king of Israel who worshiped idols. Captain Ahab seems to have a huge idol — the whale — which (and this is no spoiler) leads to the destruction of the crew. Ishmael is saved at the very end by a ship called Rachel. Rachel was known for her care and love for her son Joseph, who was also trafficked by his jealous brothers. In its most general reading, Moby Dick describes a tragic jaunt into idolatrous infatuation with the passions and the furthest extent of human ingenuity. But this all seems to be a pointless extension that causes incredible tragedy. Chapter for chapter, Moby Dick is far too elaborate to hold to one standard. But Ishmael’s “exile” on the ship is a theme for rich moral and existential discourse, which you can find in every punctual and head-slappingly vibrant chapter.
• More than anything else, the essential connection between Moby Dick and Blood Meridian is the human spirit in the face of nature. This is even too broad to mean anything. The nature in Blood Meridian is novel in itself: McCarthy may be describing a nature of which we were previously unaware. Both books give insight into the futility of human inventions and genius against nature; the Judge, for all his brilliance, is still just a creature of impulse. Intelligence has technical value in Blood Meridian — serving only, it seems, to increase the agony inflicted by those who lord it over the weak, a direct and sobering insight into the “Will to Power” that invokes great pause on the subject. Even without a towering intellect like the Judge, the Kid can clearly see through everything happening and can effortlessly denote the futility of contemplation in the face of the truth. In the final chapter, the Kid (now the Man)’s responses are clear and right, but he seems to be digging his own grave in front of the Judge.
• “Even a dumb animal can dance”
• More valuable in Blood Meridian, it seems, is the resistance to illusions. All men seem taken by something: by ideology, by conquest, by money. The Judge reaps all of these but none are his object; he is a machine, it seems, that will run itself forever, a creature of pure intelligence that does not check itself and would cast all of reality into bondage for its benefit. The Judge, in my opinion, simply represents human ingenuity itself, which is not something to be proud of. It is separate from our better judgment, which we find in the Kid. “Remote from his origins,” the Kid can approach the real world soberly — that is, he sees that there is nothing there. His rejection of his father’s “poets whose names are now lost” closes the world’s semantics from him, as though saving him from the tragic tyranny of the mind.
• Ishmael’s description of the Pequod’s journey has full regard for meaning in the natural world, almost as a perfect contrast to the Kid. The Kid’s narrative seems to acknowledge and comprehend the nightmarish and vivid world while casually moving past it, either as a betrayal of foolishness or simple sobriety. Ishmael, however, notes the world’s messages as they pertain to Ahab’s journey — the captain seems immune or deaf to them, to his detriment. If anything, Moby Dick outlines the importance of listening to the world; to ignore it is folly. The Judge, who stands directly opposed to everything, comprehends and notes everything while also destroying it, replacing it with his own metrics, while the Kid passively enters into nature and allows it to guide him. The Kid acknowledges the moral and spiritual travails while the Judge steps over it all on a quest for unlimited power, closing his heart to the pure tragedy of it all. It would seem that by casting the cultural imperative aside, we are able to effortlessly seize on the object of our designs. The “Will to Power” is only inhibited by the human spirit. Therefore I think the “nature” in Blood Meridian is actually our own nature, which is antagonistic to the staggering and terrifying genius we command. Beneath the imperium of invention nothing will be spared.
• I do not believe McCarthy has imbued Blood Meridian with any specific union among these distinguishing features — like a proper author, he describes and expounds on the real world without forcing opinions and uses a controlled flow of information to explore the questions themselves, rather than narrowing the whole book down to a handful of possible conclusions. Blood Meridian can withstand criticisms that it is incoherent because it is too detailed to fail; the discussion of intelligence, morality and our position in the cosmos is so thorough as to far exceed whatever you pay for the paper itself. This is what it shares most intensely with Moby Dick: both are books of exponentially more value than the sum of their parts, probing adjacent topics with fluency and mastery over the discussion itself.

It’s been nearly a month since our state lived through the horrible shooting at Michigan State University. As a father and fellow Spartan, my heart breaks for the three students who lost their lives, their families and friends, and the time that was stolen from them. My heart also breaks for those who were injured, those who survived, and those who will carry the weight of this traumatic memory for years to come.
I recently spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate to pay tribute to the students who were killed, Michigan State University students and staff, as well as the East Lansing Community — and to call for Congress to pass meaningful gun reforms. We must take action to stop these tragic shootings, we can’t let this unacceptable cycle continue.

Last year, we showed that commonsense reform is still possible with the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — the most significant federal law to address gun violence in nearly three decades. It invests in mental health resources, expands school safety measures, enhances background checks, and includes new guidelines to make sure we keep guns from getting into the wrong hands.
We are already seeing its benefits begin to reach our state. Last month, Senator Stabenow and I welcomed $8 million in federal funding to the Michigan State Police to help combat gun violence and enhance crisis intervention programs across Michigan. But it’s clear that this law did not go far enough. There is so much more we can — and must — do.
I believe that we must pass legislation to expand federal background checks to all gun sales — which is a measure I helped reintroduce in the Senate. We must enact reasonable limits on high-capacity magazines, close dangerous loopholes, and pass red flag laws — while still respecting the rights of law-abiding, responsible gun owners. And we must invest in first responders like those who so bravely answered the call at Michigan State.
These commonsense measures are supported by the overwhelming majority of the American people and will save lives.
I know the MSU community will need time to heal in the wake of this tragedy, but they shouldn’t have to do that work alone. The choice is ours to make. For the students and staff of Michigan State and for every family that has been torn apart by gun violence, we must choose to act.

The Case Against Norfolk Southern

Norfolk Southern drenched this adorable village in the most toxic chemical ever tested - Dioxin.
​

1. We start by exploring the history of Dioxin the Toxin and Train Derailments
   
2. Next we outline the corporate decisions leading up to this disaster.
   
3. After that, we’ll break down the chain of events sparked on February 2nd
   
4. Finally we’ll wrap up with my recommendation to these Attorneys General to immediately arrest and prosecute Alan Shaw, CEO of Norfolk Southern, for crimes against humanity, as defined under the geneva convention, as he has clearly demonstrated himself to be an urgent and present threat to the very fabric of our society. By taking clear action, the Attorneys General will establish a clear precident for the next corporate executive who drenches thousands of civilians in the most toxic chemical created by man - Dioxin.
   
5. 1897, Herbert Dow discovers how to produce chlorine from salt, creating a new industry of chlorine-based products. Chlorine is toxic, and chlorine reactions are the only known source of dioxin.
   
6. 1949, A chemical plant erupts in Nitro, West Virginia, resulting in a collossal dioxin release.
   
   1. The disaster was cleaned up by unfortunate first responders, and rabbits were placed in the allegedly clean area, those rabbits died immediately.
   2. Other rabbits were placed further away from the scene, they died in a matter of hours.
   3. These tests were hidden from government, and the public. Internal memos confirm they knew plenty about the danger of dioxin, as early as 1949.
7. In 1971, one resident hired a business to spray oil on the dirt roads in Times Beach, Missouri to control the dust in their air. The motor oil was contaminated with dioxin the toxin, from a nearby Agent Orange factory. In 1982, high levels were found in soil samples, prompting permanent evacuation of Times Beach. The town was declared as a Superfund site, indicating it as one of the most toxic sites in the United States. The cleanup was overseen by the (EPA.)
   
8. January 1979, a Norfolk wreck in Sturgeon, Missouri spills octochlorophenol, exposing the community to just one single teaspoon worth of dioxin. Everyone was forced to leave town. Monsanto denied dioxin the toxin was part of the spill, later testing documented extremely high levels. During the trial lawyer Rex Carr, performed legal miracles, resulting in a court order for Monsanto to reveal its secret dioxin research files.
   
   1. Monsantos chemical engineer, testified that, for seven years, they dumped 40 POUNDS of dioxin into the Mississippi River EACH DAY from their plant. This continued through 1977.
   2. Monsanto secretly tested corpses from dead locals, the test results showed every. body. contained dioxin in its tissue.
   3. Dioxin was the active ingredient in Lysol disinfectant and other cleaning products. One chemist testified that they knew Lysol is recommended for cleaning baby toys with direct human contact, while also knowing it was extremely toxic.
   4. Congress passed the Toxic Substances Control Act, giving power to the EPA. This law required companies to report dioxin contamination to the government if they discovered it.
   5. Despite this, testimony revealed in 1978 that all Monsanto products were contaminated with dioxin, completely unreported to the EPA, because they didn’t discover it, because they didn’t test for it, because it was, quote, “dangerous to work with dioxin”.
   6. They testified further that the EPA didn’t need to be notified of their dioxin products because the EPA already knew dioxin was dangerous. This type of Broken Logic can be found throughout nearly every environmental lawsuit thats ever been brought to court. Seriously.
   7. “Monsanto sold dioxin products for fifty years.” said their chemist.
      1. Why did Monsanto lie and fail to notify the world about dioxin? He testified that it was “profitable for Monsanto to not inform anyone their products contained dioxin the biotoxin.”
9. 2005: Norfolk Southern trains collide. Nine killed, 250 treated for chlorine exposure.
   
10. In 2013, A dozen tank cars ignite in North Dakota. Thick black smoke rolled from the wreckage as five explosions rocked the town. The collision occurred after a train derailed, and a train hauling oil ran into it. 📷
    
11. In 2019, Railroads and unions start arguing about Precision Scheduled Railroading.
    
    1. PSR resulted in staffing cuts; companies enact strict attendance policies. These policies eliminate free-time requiring workers to be on-call for weeks on end. Workers complain of stress and fatigue.
    2. Due to precision scheduled railroading, Shippers complain about poor service and delays. Workers are concerned with safety due to reduced inspections.
    3. TWENTY THOUSAND railroad workers were laid off in 2019. Large railroads employed 30% fewer workers in 2022 versus 2018.
    4. PSR also impacts safety due to increased train length, up to three miles in many cases. This leads to derailments as well as crew stress and fatigue; due to the enormous difficulty of operating trains at this length, for which the North American railroad network was not designed.
12. February 2022: Unions representing 17,000 workers threaten to strike, Burlington Northern sues and wins a restraining order preventing the union strike.
    
13. March 2022: Norfolk Southern announces $10 billion in stock buybacks and raises its dividend, while refusing to provide its workers with basic benefits such as paid sick leave.

15. September 15 2022, Biden announces a deal to solve a railroad strike. The deal was announced before being ratified by the unions.
    
16. November 30 2022, after firmly rejecting his deal, Biden told congress to pass the agreement into law. the House passed the agreement along with an amendement requiring 7 days paid sick leave.
    
17. December 1 2022, the next day the Senate passed the agreement with only 1 day of sick leave.
    
18. December 2 2022, President Joe Biden signed the agreement (or disagreement, really) into law. A McGill University Professor described his message to rail workers as: "shut up and get back to work." The Biden administration's disagreement was condemned by over 500 labor historians in an open letter to Joe Biden and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh.
    
19. January 2 2023: precisely 1 month before East Palestine explodes, the CDC releases an updated toxic profile for Vinyl Chloride, 17 years after their previous update. This update removes information about dangers to human health. 📷
    
20. Train Passes through Cleveland ~8pm
    
    1. The train left Madison, Illinois heading to Conway, Pennsylvania.
    2. The crew started their shift in Toledo before the train passed through Cleveland.
21. Train on Fire in Salem, Ohio ~8:12pm
    
    1. Surveillance footage from a factory 20 miles from the crash, shows flaming wheels as the train passes. Not Hot Wheels, Not Flaming Cheetos, but dioxin the toxin in these cars.
22. Train derails in East Palestine, Ohio ~8:54pm
    
    1. The moment of impact can be seen lighting up the area on surveillance camera from Cardinal Welding.
    2. 38 cars derail with fire damaging 12 more.
23. Evacuation order 9:53 PM February 3, 2023
    
    1. 1 hour later, a shelter-in-place order was issued, alongside an evacuation order for the 1-mile area around the railroad crossing.
    2. A shelter is made available at EPHS.
24. Local Emergency Proclamation Issued 9:29 AM February 4, 2023
    
    1. The Village of East Palestine declares an emergency the next morning, describing the event, as well as the evacuation zone and shelters.
    2. 50 cars derailed, with what are described as: “various products,” instead of calling them “toxins,” which they are.
    3. They pulled the firefighters out, leaving unmanned water hoses to fight the fire
    4. Air monitoring is going on with quote “no dangerous reading to report at this time,” failing to explain what chemicals are involved, nor explaining which chemicals they’re monitoring in the air, while claiming that there are “no dangerous readings to report.” >Cut to firey train<

28. February 6th Norfolk Southern offers 25,000
    
    1. In a press release later scrubbed off their website, Norfolk Southern plainly offers just $25,000 to the town for exploding toxic biohazards in the heart of their community.
    2. Despite removing the article, you can still find the original copy on this website that records historical snapshots of other websites.
    3. Looks like Norfolk Southern learned the hard way, you can’t scrub a toxic spill off the internet either, because every action leaves residue.
29. Gov. DeWine issues evacuation order, deploys national guard 12:00pm February 6, 2023
    
    1. Governor DeWine issued an evacuation order due to "potential of a catastrophic tanker failure" that "could cause an explosion” with “the potential of deadly shrapnel traveling up to a mile." He also "activated the National Guard to assist authorities.”

    2. The group noted that the "immediate cause" of the wreck "appears to have been an 1800’s-style mechanical failure of the axle on one of the cars—an overheated bearing—leading to derailment and then jackknifing tumbling cars.”
    3. "There is no way in the 21st century, except for a combination of incompetence and disregard for public safety, that such a defect should still be threatening our communities," wrote RWU, which supports nationalization of the U.S. rail system.
    4. "Forty percent of the weight of NS 32N was grouped at the rear third of the train, which has always been bad practice," the statement continued. "This fact made the wreck dynamically worse. Increasingly the PSR-driven carriers, driven to cut costs and crew time by any means necessary, cut corners and leave crews and the public at risk.”
    5. The crash in Ohio "has been years in the making," the group added. "What other such train wrecks await us remains to be seen. But given the M.O. of corporate railroads, we can no doubt expect future disasters of this nature.”
34. Evacuation order lifted 4:16 PM February 8, 2023
    
    1. Governor DeWine announced the evacuation order was lifted and residents are allowed back home, just two days after the evacuation. The order was lifted after “air samples” quote showed safe readings, governor DeWine claimed. Ex. 41
    2. It’s just eerie how something that should be triumphant, you know, “Hey we saved the day, avoided the explosion,” you’d think they’d be at least slightly upbeat… if they really did everything in their power to save the people.
35. NewsNation reporter arrested during news conference 5:20 PM February 8, 2023
    
    1. During the news conference announcing the lifting of the evacuation order, reporter Evan Lambert was arrested by Major General John C Harris during a live report. TWELVE officers would follow General Harris to confront Evan Lambert, and General Harris is clearly seen assaulting Mr. Lambert. Charges were filed against Lambert for “Resisting Arrest” and “Criminal Tresspassing.”

39. Alan announces an additional One-Million-Dollars of support to East Palestine, or roughly $212 per resident. Maybe they realized the initial offer of $25,000 looked a little stingy.
    
40. EPA releases list of hazardous materials on train 6:00 PM February 13, 2023
    
    1. 11 days after the crash, The EPA finally released a list of the biotoxins on board the train provided by Norfolk Southern, providing zero guidance or confirmation about combustion byproducts, such as, you know, Dioxin.
41. Gov. DeWine gives 3rd update since derailment 3:00 PM February 14, 2023
    
    1. Gov. DeWine provided his third news conference on the subject, for the first time revealing that the Norfolk Southern train was not classified as carrying highly hazardous materials, because “only some of the train cars were carrying toxic chemicals.”
