The engineemechanic who holds it all togethegets the most out of the systems is probably my absolute favorite role to play in video games, but I can only think of a small handful that scratch the itch, like Guns of Icarus, Barotrauma, or SS13.
Does anyone else have suggestions for any good games, especially any kind of single player game, that focuses on this sort of thing?

It's nearly midnight. I go to sleep, then I suddenly wake up in a daze. My head hurts, and I realize that I'm being carried through a dark corridor. I notice the corridor is very drab, dark and cold. I look around and notice I'm in a prison. I notice the warden carrying me in his arms. He has mistaken me for a criminal, and I try to resist but he's way too strong. We get to the end of the corridor, and there's a door. The door has a small window and I catch a glimpse of the electric chair in a brightly lit room. I can't believe what I'm seeing. I somehow manage to fall out of his arms and I try and run toward the corridor to escape, but he quickly grabs me and then drags me to the chair before throwing me into it. He ties the straps so tightly they bruise me, and he's getting really pissed off. There's nobody else around to help me, he asks for my last words and then fires up the generator. My heart starts pounding and I feel this weird mixture of terror and excitement. My last words are 'let me ride the lightning jail daddy'. I hear a sound similar to that of an airplane engine spooling up.
He looks at the clock, which is a minute from midnight. When the clock strikes midnight, he looks at me and nods. Then he flicks the switch and I am electrocuted. I feel my muscles start to shake, feel my heart going into fibrillation and I can't breathe at all. The electric current hurts a little but it feels like the most intense tickling I've ever experienced in my life.

I work at a structural engineering firm and we have been getting a fair amount of jobs that require sealed calculations for small residential/commercial steel components/structures. We have initially been doing these by hand (pencil/paper) but are moving towards trying to somewhat automate/streamline this. We are starting to type up our calculations into MS Word but this is somewhat tedious check by hand.
Initial thoughts to streamline this process would be to either create a spreadsheet or use a mathcad type of application or maybe a free Latex compiler. I am not sure if latex actually computes the calculations in a practical way that is not too cryptic. I am not sure this would be worth paying for software that might sit on our computers only using it intermittently. So mostly looking for free solutions unless they are one-time or very economical.
TLDR - Looking for a cost-effective way to create presentable math equations that also "compute themselves" like a spreadsheet would, and then paste into word (or have presentable output).

Hello everyone.
I have studied electrical engineering in university having had a big focus on programming languages and methodologies. For the last year I have been working on a big 4 company with SAP ERP systems, more specifically SAP Analytics Cloud and have been having great fun with it, mixing ERP skills with some application programming.
It also happens that I have recently been approached by another company for an Odoo ERP position. Before this I had never heard of Odoo before, so for the past days I have been trying to gather some information on it.
I know that SAP is directed into pretty big companies as it's price is quite the amount, and for what I've understood Odoo is more directed at small and medium companies.
My question is, for you that have more experience in the ERP world, what are some insights and tips you might share regarding both of these technologies. For someone who doesn't know Odoo very well, is it a good challenge and does it involve interesting programming hurdles?

So I’m making this post after reading some forums on RX8club.com where they describe rebuilding an RX8 engine as the most complex thing ever. Like seriously they make it seem like I’m rebuilding a jet engine. Now I’ve worked in cars and engines for 5 years now and I feel like I have a really good understanding of working on stuff. I’ve rebuilt multiple small engines and I’ve also done a head gasket on a v6 before. Sure I’ve never rebuilt a rotary before but god damn can I follow instructions and be careful when assembling lol. I’m just asking is it really that hard to do for someone who’s worked on cars before. I know it won’t be cheap but I’d like to do it myself if I can.
Also I’m wondering what’s the best way to go when rebuilding an engine while minimizing downtime of the car? I was wondering if it’s better just to buy all the main components of the engine (eshaft, housings, rotors, etc.) and build one from the ground up or should I buy a used engine and rebuild that one? If I were to rebuild one I’d like it to last as long as possible.

I got an email this morning with a scathing report about one of my techs.

$HHR - I need to inform you of a situaiton I have been made aware of. It seems one of your techs massively violated the IT data policy and security policy last night. I have gone ahead and submitted the termination paperwork to your boss $HIT.
Please be aware that this kind of behavior will never be tolerated. I hope that I never have to remind you of this again.

Around this time one of the accounts team comes over and asks about this. I told them that it was not approved by me and to keep it quiet while I discuss it with $hit.
The discussion did not take long as the event in question was already flagged for defense. IE I personally flagged it because the tech told me it may come back to bit him in the ass.
I re-review the call logs and oh boy is it dumb. I will just skip to the part in question.

$U - Yes I need that mapped to the B drive (branch drive).
$T - I can do that for you, however you should know that this location is already mapped to the S drive for scanning.
$U - ...OK? I am not understanding what you mean.
$T - The drive you are requesting access to is already mapped to a different drive letter.
$U - No I need access to the B drive not the S drive. Talking to coworkers thinking she is out of earshot. Wow when did they hire idiots to work on the helpdesk? ... I know right. Its like we are the dumb ones or something.

Had to clean up the audio in free audio tool everyone uses first but I was able to get it by compressing it twice.

$T - OK I will just map the drive for you.
$U - You do know you are speaking to a member of management right?
$T - Mutes mic noise Lady I don't care. You are not my manager and are not involved in my management chain. Unmutes mic noise Yes mam I do understand that. I apologize if I have come across as terse. I have mapped the drive here.
$U - Wait...this is the same as the S drive.
$T - mutes mic again I just said that...you know what? unmutes mic Yes I had said that earlier that you already had the drive mapped.
$U - YOU CANT HAVE! ... You cant have 2 access points to the same data. This is a HUGE violation.
$T - Umm no it is not. Everyone who is on citrix has an "access point" to the same data.
$U - No they do not. No one has access to MY computer.

I emailed $HHR back with this lovely gem.

$ME - After reviewing the event in question, it has been determined that the fault lie 100 percent with the user here. Her clear lack of knowledge in regards to basic server technology led to her thinking she had her machine breached.
I have canceled the termination order on my end as well as the emergency maintenance ticket she put in to the orders team.
In the future all concerns about my team are to come through me. We have a process for terminating an employee, which you set up, that you violated. The employee in question did nothing wrong and was unjustly judged by people who have no understanding of basic computer technology.
Please do not violate the policy you set in place for terminating an employee in the future...I hope that I never have to remind you of this again.

I sent a copy of that to $hit the CIO and the EVPIT. (Or the executive vice president of IT and Technology)
About 2 hours later I get an email back from the EVPIT. He apologized for the way that the head of HR acted and promised me that the tech in question will not receive any punishment as he listened to the call himself.
Two hours later I am being told that my anual employee review is being pushed up to tomorrow by the head of HR.

So yesterday was strange, to say the least. The meeting was scheduled for noon so the beginning of my day was pretty mundane. Handled a few issues with users who had purchased their own machines because “ours were not fast enough,” even though the ones they bought were supplied by us. But cest la vie.
At noon I walked into the conference room for the video review. $HIT was in there as well as the executive vice president of IT and technology. (yes I know) The conference started hilariously as the head of HR, or $HHR, could not get her video working.
I walked her through how to fix that as it was a simple error.

$ME – Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?
$HHR – Oh duh. Should have known it was something stupid like that.

We started the conference and HOOO BOOOY. She was gunning for me hard.

$HHR – So I have in front of me 19 complaints against you this year. Can you explain these?
$ME – That’s it?
$HHR - Clearly not expecting that. Uhh yes. How do you explain it?
$ME – Well as you well know, each complaint is different and most do not have merit.
$HHR – So you are saying these complaints were made…incorrectly?
$ME – Yes that is exactly what I am saying.

I pulled out the same folder she probably had.

$Me – On Feb 12th User complained that I refused his request.
$HHR – Good one to start with? Explain it.
$ME - user wanted me to put a folder on his desktop that would allow him to transfer items between his local desktop and citrix. This is not possible unless he works on the domain…which he does not. I offered him several alternative options but he refused each one. He only wanted the original option of a folder on his desktop.
$HHR – So this was impossible?
$ME – Technology wise of course it is possible. We could have set him up with an FTP option to direct into his session. But that would never EVER get the approval.
$HHR – Lets move on to the next one. Different user Claimed that you were rude to her on the phone and hung up on her.
$me – Lets play the call log.

The call log is me being professional while she politely berates me on the phone…until she cusses me out. I terminate the call and send it to HR.

$Me – That call is the reason why SHE is fired. Your predecessor said I handled it well.
$HHR – Ok lets move on to the lady who had to wait 4 extra days to get her laptop back from you.
$ME – Name?
$HHR - lady who yelled in my face said you helped her 3 days in a row and finally took an extra 4 days to get her laptop back to her.

$ME – Thanks for repeating it here… Yes. Anyways the point is her laptop was finished within 2 hours of me returning to work. The 4 days she is talking about is because we had a 3 day weekend.

The meeting went on like this for well over 30 minutes as we ran through each complaint with only 1 that was legitimate. I misread a technical error and had to fix it 30 minutes later. Oh well. Then came the real kicker.

$HHR – Lets talk about the fire you started.
$ME – I STARTED!?
$HIT – HE STARTED!? (same time.)
$EVPIT – Wait what?
$HHR – Per your report. The fuse box was overloaded when the third rack of servers plugged in and started a fire inside the wall that ended up burning out most of the building.
$ME – Yes that does sound correct. What your report failed to mention on the report, which I have in front of me because I FUCKING sent it. (Yes I did say that.) The circuit breaker was not an actual circuit breaker. It was a bypass installed to bring the building up to code. The fuse box had cabinets built over it so that the owner could hide it. When too much was plugged into a mains line, which was rated to handle it, the fuse should have blown. But there was about 50 cents worth of pennies shoved in there.
$HHR – How was this missed.
$ME – I don’t know. I am not an electrician, I am not a state building inspector, I am not omniscient, and I am certainly not omnipotent. I went in to set up an office.
$HHR – You appear to have an excuse for everything.
$ME – Yes its called CYA. You literally have that on a poster in your office.
$HHR – Now lets talk about your language to me yesterday.
$ME – How about lets talk about your blatant disregard for the termination procedures you set in place. You created a paper snafu for my worker because you could not help yourself but to stick your nose where it does not belong. If you had followed procedure and not sent the termination paperwork through, he would have health insurance right now. Instead you decided to play tech and fired someone in the system. I spent 4 hours yesterday chasing paperwork and trying to keep this knowledge from him.
$HHR – I Do not appreciate your attitude.
$ME – And I do not appreciate you taking actions on your own. You may be HR but even you are not allowed to terminate employees without
$EVPIT – OK That is far enough you have made your point $me. Remember that $HHR holds your job in her hand.
$hit – Like a small bird.
$EVPIT – Thank you $hit. So you do need to show her some respect…that being said. $HHR? He is right. You violated company policy, you tried to terminate an employee when it was not called for, and you created a mountain out of a single email. (Turning to me) Do you want to keep your job?
$Me – Yes.
$EVPIT – Then never take a disrespectful tone or cuss at a member of the senior management again. I expect a written apology to her by the end of the day. No further action needs to be taken here. (Turning to the monitor that has $HHRs face on it) As for you.
$HHR – Yes?
$EVPIT – You will apologize to both him and the employee you tried to terminate by the end of the day yourself. While he was disrespectful, cussed, and generally made an ass of himself, he is not wrong. You did overreact and wrongfully terminate a good worker forcing $ME here into overdrive trying to stop it in its tracks. You could have solved this by going to $ME when you first heard about it. I heard the call log and read everything about this incident. Simply put the end user was an idiot and needs to trust the people she calls to fix her computer.

EVPIT stood up and gathered his things.

$EVPIT – Hopefully this is the last I hear of any animosity towards upper management, or animosity coming from upper management. Good day people.

EVPIT left and I went back to my desk apologizing for the attitude I took with the head of HR. At 4:55 PM the email came in from the head of HR apologizing for her role. I then had 5 minutes to explain to the tech what happened. He decided he owed me a lunch.

Side note, this story is obviously embellished and edited for the sake of the narrative, and I'm sure there's some editorializing in favor of OOP, but head of HR in this case is indefensible and why I found it particularly fitting this sub as it reminds me of similar stories here.

2023.03.25 00:21 jeepers98 ‘98 update

Previously I discussed how my 98 XJ was having trouble in the rain. Not starting, dying. So today my wife tries to start it and it just cranks. It has a battery that’s died before so to make sure it had a strong crank I hooked my car up to jump it. Looking through the previous comments, I also unplugged the IAC just to see. Fired right up. Shut it off, turned it back on. No trouble.
Thoughts? Weak battery maybe, but that shouldn’t only be in damp weather. I had her floor the accelerator to mitigate any fuel rich issues but in retrospect that cancels out the IAC. What appeared to be small pieces of dust or water flew (read:FLEW) off the engine as it started.
She’s tired of this. I’m a little tired of it. Any advice you have will be helpful. Thanks in advance to the best XJ community.

Because so many other animals and plants contain more chromosomes than humans, wouldn't they have more introns? I realize that introns are there for gene expression for exons, but could introns be substituted or swapped out with other genes or introns/exons? Is there a way to completely clip out all introns and substitute them for functioning exons? This is a little out there, but I suspect that if a plant had a lot more chromosomes than a human and only a small group of exons expressing, then you could fundamentally make plants with more chromosomes, have every expression Gene possible for a full balance nutritional meal. Say that genetic engineering happened way before humans were here and our masters made it that we had to eat different foods from different areas to get all these different nutrients.
Why couldn't we then delete those areas and fill them in with Gene coding sequences so that a f****** cabbage has everything that any fruit or other vegetable would have in it? I understand it's not that simple, but could organisms that have a lot of chromosomes, with a lot of introns, be waiting for us to put the expressional information back in, so that we can make plants have way more expressional power than they currently have? If this is not making sense what I'm saying is, could we make cabbage have the same nutrients as a mango, a carrot, a papaya, a cantaloupe, green beans etc etc etc.
I think "junk DNA" or introns is a saving space. It's just a bunch of crap put in there waiting for us to clip it out and put bettealternative functioning code in. Am I way off base here?

Hi all,
Right now I'm an undergraduate deciding between two Ph.D program offers in the field of Electrical Engineering. I got an offer from Georgia Tech with a small scholarship, and I also got an offer from University of Florida with a "Dean's Research Award", where they stated that they offered me an assistantship with four years of covered stipend, tuition, and health insurance. I am leaning towards Georgia Tech right now because their program is better and the location is preferable for me, but part of me feels like it would be a waste to not accept such generous financial aid, especially since I've been told that having funding is extremely important as a Ph.D student. In my case, PI match is not as important as I have the option of trying a rotation system in both programs and my interests are quite broad.
I would be grateful to hear anyone's personal opinions on this matter as I'm having a hard time making a decision. I'm from the West Coast and also the first of my family to do a Ph.D in America, so I feel like I don't personally have intuition on the graduate program quality difference between Georgia Tech vs. University of Florida, and I also don't really understand how significant/important independent funding is. What would you do in my situation? Thank you for any opinions or advice!

Hello everyone! I wanted to ask this subreddits advice in regards to a prospective purchase, so I hope that's okay. Allow me to preface that I'm on somewhat of a tight budget, but I've been in the market for a 4WD/AWD vehicle with low mileage for some months now with little luck. I live in the mountains and there's a lot of rough roads, so I wanted that added sense of security and capability in less than perfect conditions. There's a 2018 Ford EcoSport S with AWD, roughly 40K miles near me with an asking price around 15K, which is just around my budget. It has an extensive and clean maintenance history, and the 2.0 liter engine instead of the 1.0 liter. Now, I don't really care that it's simpler than alternatives, or smaller. I don't need much room nor do I anticipate that need arising in the near future. I presently drive a subcompact hatchback, so really anything is an upgrade. I know this question has been asked before on this subreddit, but in the wake of a still pretty bad used car market and my car starting to have more and more issues, I wanted second opinions. My only chief concern is long term reliability, particularly with the six speed automatic transmission. I've read that starting with the 2018 model year they put a traditional torque converter transmission in the EcoSport instead of the notorious dual clutch transmission that's the subject of all that legal trouble. I know some people might say "just buy a Toyota or a Subaru", but that's not really an option for me given the market. And again, I don't mind simple, I don't mind small, I don't even mind "unrefined", as I've heard this car called. Thank you for any and all feedback. 😁

I have been working as a Data Engineer for a bit now, but most of my background is in full stack development utilizing Node, dotNet, and front-end frameworks, and both noSQL and SQL databases etc., but rarely Python. Python was always used as a scripting language or for hobbies. Now, in the world of "data fill-in-the-blank" Python is the bee's knees. I do like it..., and have decided to move forward with a sticker on my Mac but at what point an I forcing a round peg in an octagon hole? I have been using Python to write small pipelines moving a million rows or less from various flat-files or DB tables to some data warehouse. Everything seems simple: Read in a CSV with Pandas, do some cleaning, upload to the whatever database, etc. However, some of the projects I'm working on are requiring a bit more sophistication or heavy lifting. Pandas and Sqlalchemy seem chunky and not great (slow) for migrating greater than a million rows from one source to another. Are there options other than Sqlalchemy or Pandas in the Python world for moving data or have I been reading too many articles by Data Scientists?

I have the best news for anyone who's ever got shit from family for eloping: our wedding will be near our town AND we'll have a reception in my hometown, and I have pissed off my family for 🥁🥁... not eloping. And we're not even engaged yet. People who get married cannot win.
In October I wanted to discuss a timeline. We're going on 5 years, in our 30s and I moved 12 hours up north to a Great Lake for him.
He doesn't want the big wedding I've always dreamed. His mom died when he was 20, his dad's a deadbeat and he only has his brother. He'd be ok with a large reception later, but on "what's supposed to be the best day of (his) life," he'd love to just celebrate with his best friends, his brother and my closest people. He said that, and that he planned to propose "in the next several months."
We went to my hometown for Christmas where I told my parents the plan: Small wedding up north, very few close friends and family. Then a reception back home for everyone + anyone who finds that easier than the wedding. My mother's sister and her daughters have been frienemies for decades. I already planned to invite them to keep the peace. Sure, they SAY no matter what you do you piss someone off. But MY plans were so perfect, nobody could be upset! Oh sweet, sweet summer child from 3 months ago...
In January, my bf took a weekend with his brother, and I decided to just jot down a tentative guest list... my totals were about 40-ish. I tried to just casually bring this up when he got home but he said, "well ... where's this list?"
He doesn't find my list excessive. But my engineering-major love of my life DID get into logistics and budget, while I'm looking at Pinterest boards. I DM'd my aunt/godmother to give her more than a year's notice for travel as she lives WAY across the country. We don't want a long engagement -- it may be a year or less. It's like we took one step and can't go back... we're planning a wedding.
At first my parents were pissed about how much do I expect to spend, this is a double venue?! I chose a cheap ass (think VFW) venue for hometown reception that we can make pretty. Then they were mad that I ... wanted to have my wedding blessed by a Catholic deacon to honor their faith that I left??? "Marriage is a sacrament, you do it ONCE." Ok, fine by me. Then they asked, you live on a great lake, WHY not get married ON the great lake? Archer voice: "Do you want a $40,000 wedding? Because this is how you get a $40,000 wedding." Our wedding venue is affordable, AWAY from all the tourism. All the things I gave them a heads up about at Christmas they nodded at, and now? I gently told Mom we'll just pay for this ourselves. She didn't like that, either.
They've now come around. Mom mentioned our pre-planning to her sister. I thought this was great, as godmother aunt had also been given notice. Mom's sister: "So we're expected to go all the way there, then turn around and travel AGAIN for the reception?" No, literally choose one -- if the reception 1 hour from your house is too hard, don't come. Later Mom's sister said her daughters just think it'd be easier if we got married in my home state's metro area, to "meet halfway." The groom's party is ALL in our state except one in Alaska. My college bestie said if she HAS to travel, she'd rather go to the Great Lake state than my hometown. See also: THE RECEPTION for people who don't want to do this.
One of my dad's nieces works for him. She straight up told my parents I need to just go justice of the peace, because that was good enough for her and I need to stop daydreaming. When I told Mom I'm already so over it, maybe we'd elope, my mother was OVERJOYED. I can already hear, "I know it wasn't your first choice but LOOK at the money saved!" for the next 30 years.
This week I wrote a Facebook status joking about different kinds of online dress shopping as a wedding guest . I used words like, "has a floral print and is listed under wedding guest but costs more than the bridesmaids spent." It also mentioned $35 dresses that are poor quality/poor labor standards. It COULD NOT be misunderstood. I used those words on purpose.
My mother's niece commented, "so are you shopping for a bridal gown? Has he asked you yet or you just pre-planning?" ... ... I have a friend about to pop in May, and somehow none of her friends, sisters or even boomer-aged relatives comment that they're excited to meet baby number 3 on any of her pics, because SHE HASN'T ANNOUNCED IT PUBLICLY. People I love have announced SEVERAL milestones on their own, including this cousin who is extremely private about her personal life. I'd even discussed with Mom sending traditional save-the-dates before making it FB official. Like ... just why?
Her comment didn't end there. She went on to say, "you should just do a courthouse wedding" and she wishes she didn't have her wedding (which was $20K). TONS of unsolicited advice that ended with, "No one remembers the dress."
I was so gobsmacked I said in extremely short terms no, we're not engaged, I was shopping for a friend's wedding and just summer dresses. She said one more thing and I one more time just said, no, we're not engaged.
I was in tears. Like I'm not even going to be surprised when he asks now, or enjoy new engagement and it's all my fault. Venue quotes are including the 2024 dates that are TAKEN, so I feel like a year+3 months isn't wild to secure a date, and yes, I GOT EXCITED. I GABBED. My boyfriend lovingly said, "No, you just wanted to keep people informed." My friends have said that ANYTHING online needs to be hidden from my mother's family and anyone extended, they sadly remember the random mean FB comments from 10 years ago. No one knows why they're back here. They're on all major platforms, there is no using Snap or Insta stories instead. It reminded me of the Mad Men scene, "I feel sorry for you," and Don Draper just snaps, "I don't think about you at all." I could not tell you the last thing these people posted except sometomes I'll give a heart-react to pics of their kids.
I just don't fucking know why I'm turning 32, will be 33 the year I get married, moved my life for this man at 28, my Mom literally argued for the big wedding because "we hope he knows he's OUR family." AND last year I had a tumor removed from my mouth that had to be replaced by part of my shin, and he was my rock. Like yes, I want to make it to the weddingsunder10k club but no, I'm not going to a fucking courthouse because you think I'm a princess brat for existing. My ENTIRE MOLD is something that makes my guests happy, me happy, AND HIM HAPPY. I'm already dreading even announcing being engaged. Ugh.
