2023.06.09 05:32 TopThrill182 Scolded for Putting My Backpack in the Overhead Bin
On a recent United flight, I was scolded for putting my backpack in the overhead bin as opposed to under the seat in front of me. And while I'm generally non-confrontational, I pushed back.
Someone at the end of the boarding process was looking for bin space for their large rolling suitcase. The passenger and flight attendant zeroed in on the bin with my backpack, and the passenger got permission from the flight attendant to turn my backpack onto its side to create more room.
I was fine with that (and usually try to do so preemptively as a courtesy) until the passenger started jamming my backpack to get it to turn over while exclaiming "I don't know what they've got in here!" I spoke up to say that there was a computer inside and to please be careful.
The flight attendant gruffly turned to me and said that my backpack was supposed to be under the seat in front of me.
No thank you! As I always do, I paid $35 to check my suitcase so that I could put my lone carry-on, my backpack, in the bin and leave the space by my feet clear. I value that.
The flight attendant did subsequently tell me that our flight was "weight restricted" and that they had to fit as many bags in the cabin as possible, but I don't see how that was a legitimate excuse for why the passenger couldn't check their large suitcase. I checked my suitcase at only ~50 minutes before departure without issue, and gate agents were offering to gate check bags throughout the boarding process.
When I paid a very expensive last minute fare and $35 to check my suitcase, I don't think it's fair that I and my reasonably sized backpack should have to yield to a passenger trying to cram a large suitcase onto the plane for free at the last minute. If everyone were to do what I do, wouldn't there be plenty of bin space?
Luckily, the passenger's suitcase ultimately fit into another bin, and my backpack stayed where it was. But what baffles me is that I would've been better off bringing an even larger bag on board, and consuming even more bin space. Or I could've put my bottled water in a bag, put that under the seat in front of me, and avoided the whole issue while still requiring the passenger's large suitcase to go elsewhere.

2023.06.08 23:48 No_Refrigerator4363 How to get revenge on a boss trying to push me out
I have worked as a professional in the Title business for many years. Since the mid 1990s. I have a ton of experience and have always had high reviews. About two years ago I was given the job of manager over an office. The office was failing and I turned it around. But my manager took another job and the man they hired in is one of those people who knows little of the business and thinks they know everything.
I was told as a manager that we need to start cutting staff as the economy is slowing down. I was told we need to do it by "Attrition" I asked what this meant and was told to make it a work environment that some will leave. That way the company does not have to pay for unemployment or any other thing that may be available to people who are fired. Also the Company gave a company wide bonus of 5 to 15 thousand dollars just under two years ago for people to sign a I will not leave for two years agreement. That will be up in November. The company then is going after its former employees to recover the bonus if they quit.
I am not on the receiving end of that "Attrition" I was called into a meeting with my manager and a witness. In the meeting I was told that there was a laundry list of things I did that were wrong. One was I communicate too much and another was I communicate too little. It was all bull shit and it was obvious they were trying to push me out. Since I was promoted to manager my salary went up 50% and I believe one reason they want me out as a manager is to save the money. One of the things I was written up for was I have my office door closed at times. When I am on a call to a customer or to management I don't need my door open. Its never been an issue before. The other thing is no one at any time has even whispered any of the complaints. It went from Zero to official reprimand over night.
I will not quit, not at the very minimum before the November two year date is past. I can draw SS in early summer next year. I may just do that and not wait for Medicare to kick in, which I had planed on. If the work environment keeps on being hostile I will file a complaint with HR. That will at least leave a trail of issues. This is all new to me. I have never in my life had anything like this happen to me. I would love to have an official memo about the attrition but they did it all verbally. I will be recording any interaction in the future but I have nothing on the attrition push officially.
I would also like to know if anyone has any ideas of how to anonymously get revenge on my boss. Nothing illegal but things that can not be traced back to me and can cause headaches. Thanks for any help.

2023.06.08 23:46 Emotional-Notice4746 What would happen if we lived in weightlessness or energy
| Greetings, absolutely recently came across this article about Tsiolkovsky. In 1883 in his work "Free Space", which is a kind of scientific diary, Tsiolkovsky considers the course of the simplest phenomena of mechanical motion in space without the action of gravitational and drag forces of the medium. Considering ways of giving motion to a body in free space, Tsiolkovsky comes to his most basic and most important principle conclusion that the easiest way to give motion to a motionless body (or change existing motion) is by throwing away mass, i.e. by reaction of particles thrown away from this body. Here is what Tsiolkovsky writes in one of the days "March 28. Morning. ...Suppose a barrel is given, filled with a strongly compressed gas. If we unscrew one of its ... taps, then the gas will rush out of the barrel in a continuous jet, and the elasticity of the gas, pushing its particles into space, will also continuously repel the barrel. The result will be a continuous change of motion of the barrel...By a sufficient number of cocks (six), it is possible to control the gas expulsion so that the motion of a barrel or a hollow ball will be completely dependent on the desire of the person controlling the cocks, i.e. ...The barrel can describe any curve and according to any law of speeds...The change of motion of the barrel is possible only until all the gas has not left it...In general, uniform motion along a curve or rectilinear non-uniform motion is associated in free space with a continuous loss of substance (support)". https://preview.redd.it/9521ryds6v4b1.png?width=486&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e499713ce755bd297440f7c3c75feab8bec898a The work "Free space" was first published in Volume II of the Collected Works of K.E. Tsiolkovsky. Tsiolkovsky by the Publishing House of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1954 (pp. 25-68). https://preview.redd.it/0yc81aku6v4b1.png?width=221&format=png&auto=webp&s=dd75c0a2c3c0277f2567f192f8cdb86a555c5c8e From there, I'd like to fantasize a bit about the next topic - suppose we have space about something. https://preview.redd.it/oqadjb3x6v4b1.png?width=224&format=png&auto=webp&s=93fc000d39192cebeaa080242e5422227927141d Suppose we have a space in which there is no Earth's gravity. This is roughly how it would have been in Tsiolkovsky's reality. https://preview.redd.it/6kr7fv7z6v4b1.png?width=301&format=png&auto=webp&s=7533c8646e61eff6cd8355234f05433fb0dc58bb From this comes the natural question, what would happen if Michael Faraday lived under the conditions of Earth gravity. would he be able to spin his machine in the form of an oscillator in weightlessness? Obviously, the moment Faraday would have tried to spin the knob of the generator, Faraday himself, as well as the conditional stator, in the usual Earth sense, would begin to come into motion. only Faraday and the Stator would begin to spin in opposite directions. This position is not only logical, but also tested experimentally. But when it comes to the Cosmos. it begs the question, what is the reason we have to do work? We need to remember the formula for work. A = F*s. Work is the movement of a load over some distance. But why do we have to exert a force? The reason is that in science it is correct to call it doing work to overcome friction forces. The reason is that some friction is counteracting us and mathematically it should be called -F as a force of counteraction. We apply a force F to overcome the counteracting force -F. But the question may arise here, if the body is on an inclined plumb line, then the reason is exactly that there are two equal forces acting on the body, the force of Gravity and the force of Friction equal to it, which prevents the body from making the movement. The force F= -F. But if we move a load on some surface. then it seems logical to imagine that in the beginning, when we made the dynamic process, we also applied a counterforce from mass or inertia. further, as soon as the body has passed into a state of uniform motion relative to the floor, we have friction. But here again we need to touch the subject that, according to the experiments conducted by Joule, overcoming the forces of friction and the work to overcome these forces must be accompanied by the release of heat and deformation in the process. Then we should write the formula thus A = Q = F*s But it is necessary to note the following detail. At the moment of the work of moving the load along the floor, let's call a part of the Earth plane the floor as a support, can there be a friction force in the direct sense of the word? For people of past centuries, now the 21st century, just such notions might have made sense. After all, it is unclear what could be resisting or exerting a counteracting force that we have to work to overcome. But the force of friction. as other forces bitten by subjective perception in mechanics cannot themselves have the properties of touch, friction, walking or other qualities. We should refer to the fact that it is not friction or process that opposes us, but the support, the floor on which the body moves by touching through an intervening medium that is electromagnetic in nature. The best epithet for understanding right now is just the intermediate medium. So - we are not being counteracted by friction or other things as a verb. We are being counteracted by the physical body. But the relationship of the body that we move has a relationship through this intermediate medium. so the plane or support begins to deform and experience force from the load as a physical body. But we live in an environment where there is some plane or support beneath us. If we are accustomed not to observe that it is not some ephemeral friction that resists us, but the Earth plane as a support, then could ancient people consider this plane in terms of the Cosmos, which in the main mass is unsupported? I assume that this could not happen a priori. so we are more accustomed to consider the resistance of some force. If we are in Space and assume that we are beings whose habitat is Space, then we will have a different habitual view, just as astronauts habitually drop objects, assuming that due to the absence of weightlessness they will remain suspended in space, while the body immediately receives acceleration and hits the Earth surface, floor or other support resting on the Earth. But now we are talking about what we are used to - COSMOS. This is our mental experiment. We turn the knob of an oscillator, which, through an intermediate medium in the form of a magnetic field, begins to communicate a force to the rotor, which begins to accelerate, while we ourselves begin to rotate. This means that by applying a force we are communicating a force with opposite signs to two bodies. If we want to rotate the rotor handle to infinity, we will have to look for a support. let this support be the plane of the Spaceship. Its kinetic energy is such that the force to be applied to the spacecraft in the mechanical chain is negligibly small to have any noticeable effect on the trajectory of the spacecraft itself. Thus all that will resist us is the inertia of mass. But this force accumulates in the body. This process we call momentum transfer or kinetic energy transfer. now the question stands, as in the case in Earth conditions, as in the case in the ship - were we able to consider, as observers relative to us, any motion of the ship or the Earth? Both the ship. and the planet Earth have an enormous kinetic energy compared to those kilograms. which we can imagine in our mental experiment. to see the movement of the ship, at least to measure with some super-precise experiment. we need at least to have an observer fixed in some part of space. to be in this part in our daily life is difficult for us. In Faraday's time, the topic of the observer and relativity had not yet penetrated consciousness on a cosmic scale. But does that mean we don't have an effect on the Earth or the Ship? In either set, we do. And I personally believe in Newton's Third Law. If we apply a force, then because of the huge mass, or counteracted by a force with a different vector, we still make the body accelerate, but the acceleration itself is invisible to us. But here's what the classical textbooks write us on electrical engineering - the work done by the generator is done as some sort of conversion of mechanical work into a capacitor charge. But here's the question - the charge of the capacitor, this is not Newtonian mechanics, this process has nothing to do with a physical body. you and I can charge the capacitor, but it will not add mass, tangibly. Newtonian mechanics and the process of charging a capacitor is related precisely to the appearance of energy in the circuit due to the curvature of space and time in the conductor area, which is what appears to us as an Electromagnetic Field. Then the reason that makes us do work? The reason is not in electromagnetism. electromagnetism itself in the form of magnetic fields gives us the relationship between bodies in the form of rotor and stator, the relationship itself is zero in the absence of such, when we have them the bodies begin to interact with each other. This interaction we call force interaction. Therefore, because of the incomplete force interaction between the bodies, we can as in the case of a body sliding against a surface we have no equilibrium force. force that we apply. In case we have a generator hanging in space, then through magnetic coupling we have a force interaction on the stator. which starts to come in motion storing kinetic energy when acceleration occurs. submitted by Emotional-Notice4746 to u/Emotional-Notice4746 [link] [comments] |
2023.06.08 23:30 Limp-Simple4802 Euphoria Physics in Grand Theft Auto VI
One thing that makes me curious the most is the
euphoria physics in the upcoming game. for reference i will list every Rockstar games with interactive Euphoria Physics as well with the pro and cons of each game's configuration.
i want to apologize for my grammar beforehand. it's gonna be a long thread so be ready.
GRAND THEFT AUTO 4 in my opinion, GTA 4 has the best euphoria physics than the others.
but, even GTA 4 has lots of flaws that i think would make the game better if Rockstar fix it;
- zero wind which makes falling from height static and when Niko launched in high speed horizontally Niko will pretty much never stopped unless Niko have any kind of friction with solid surface (buildings, roads, dirt). what worse is, sometimes i noticed a "scripted" momentum in which Niko forcefully keeps moving forwards despite hitting something that supposedly stopped him/makes him fly slower. GTA 5 and RDR2 has a good job depicting this aspect. when you fall, the torso which is the heaviest part of your body fall harder which makes your legs and hands swinging because of the wind. and if you flew horizontally, you will eventually goes slower thanks to the friction from the wind. GTA 4 does not have this.
- bouncy body which is not realistic. human bodies does not bounce around on hard surface. HOWEVER, it's no doubt that this aspect makes bailouts more fun and interesting.
- overall general bugs like wake up animation mid-air and the game seemingly amplifying damage when Niko hits the surface (roads/dirts).
- extremely exaggerated momentum when you knocked off your bike. if there is adjusment to just decrease this configuration a little bit, it would've perfect. but GTA 4 is notorious for the exaggerated momentum when you knocked off your bike. you drive in like 50 km/h speed, hit some cars, and then you flew away in 80 km/h. in not to mention the unrealistic "flying to the air" feature this aspect has. in some instances you could drive in like 10-20 km/h, hitting a car, and then flew to the air. that's not realistic, that's not how it works in real life. in some other instances, you could drive fast enough and make yourself flying across the map or atleast across the city if you made the right crash, that's how bad it is.
- Niko is too quick to recover after a very painful crash. GTA V and RDR2 did a good job at making the player feel pain. they lay still to comprehend what's happened and to take a break from the pain. Niko on the other hand will quickly get up. there's is some instances where the ragdoll doesn't even finished yet/still moving and Niko immediately back to his normal state.
RED DEAD REDEMPTION in my opinion, RDR and GTA 4 is almost similar but RDR has more "relaxed" ragdoll physics. but in terms of bailout or falling from height, it's the worst from everyone;
- zero gravity. while GTA 4 has zero wind, this game has "zero gravity". this game literally against laws of physics. when player is falling horizontally and ESPECIALLY vertically, instead of getting more faster as the gravity pull you down, your character is slowing down instead. floating in the air. instead of going from 9m/s to 15m/s, you going slower from 9m/s to 3m/s.
GRAND THEFT AUTO V in my opinion, this game is actually more realistic in terms of "body didn't bounce on surface". not to mention that this game actually did the gravity and wind thingy (which is a problem with previous games) correct. but, the downgrade is extremely horrible that even i overlook it;
- Less dynamic reaction from getting pushed, punched, or getting shot like the two previous game. i said less because there is still some, but it's extremely rare to happen. so it's boring and quite unrealistic.
- Extremely stiff ragdoll and too much friction when bailouts. GTA V did better with the less bouncy body. but the thing is, it doesn't have the similar level of GTA 4's dynamic reaction when bailouts. see, Niko in GTA 4 actually trying to stop the bailout with his legs and hands swinging around. and despite his effort to protect his torso with his legs and hands, he is still affected by the friction which gives us the various satisfying bailouts. GTA V however is extremely stiff. the character keeps maintaining the "protecting torso" pose with barely anything affecting their guards. also, while GTA 4 has zero wind that makes them taking too long to stop a bailout, GTA V did the opposite. it has too much friction that when you bailout from vehicle speeding in hundreds kilometers, you stopped so quickly. barely rolling like how GTA 4 did. just sliding around, do a few rolling when you finally slowed down, and then wake up. in GTA V you barely fly and hit some building walls since you didn't bounce around like GTA 4 does.
- Extremely lack of momentum when bailouts or crashing your bike is also the downgrade GTA V did from GTA 4. while GTA 4 has TOO MUCH momentum when knocked off the bike, GTA V also did the opposite. your momentum when you crash and fly through the air is so small, that even if you speeding in like 150 km/h, you will only flew in like 20-30 km/h. that is if you survive the fall of course. in some instances, there is a much more boring result with you being knocked to the side instead of flying forward. if you know, you would notice that when you flying through the air after knocked off your bike, you will fly fast, but soon enough, you will start going slower to a certain speed and you will maintain that speed until you hit the ground.
- you barely fell off your bike when hitting something unlike GTA 4. it might frustrates some players which probably what makes GTA V changed to this easier version but GTA 4 has a better and realistic approach since you ARE bound to easily fell off bikes if you reckless. i've seen some videos of people falling off bikes even for just driving to some sidewalk that doesn't really have difference in height with the road and its enough to knock these people off their bikes.
RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 this is probably the mix between all games together. the dynamic reaction from GTA 4 and RDR, and the ragdoll physics from GTA V. i don't think this has any good than the previous though. it's so decent and no speciality.
- Still a little bit too much friction. in RDR2, atleast it's beter than GTA V because you do more rolling than you do sliding like how GTA V does. and there's more momentum too. but the thing is, it's still quite stiff and too much friction so you stopped rolling really quick.
- Still need more relaxed body since RDR2 has this same animation where the character protects their torso which they can magically maintain their pose while rolling on hills. it needs more dynamic reaction like GTA 4.
- Falling animation is too quick which in my opinion it kinda makes uncanny valley. RDR2 has some slow animation so seeing someone swaying their hands and legs extremely fast is a very drastic change. GTA V did a decent job doing this falling animation, i don't know why they make it faster in RDR2.
GRAND THEFT AUTO 6 in the leaks, there is a few videos showing the euphoria physics making a comeback. but the thing is, they only shows dynamic reaction when being shot. in my opinion, it has similaslightly better reaction than RDR2. especially on the Lucia shootout clips. taking down police and shooting them while they collapse on the ground seems satisfying. but we don't know about the bailouts, getting hit by a vehicle, and falling from height ragdolls. so we don't know what will exactly they gonna pull.
based from the information above about each game's pros and cons, i would have a mix of them all to be like this;
- dynamic reaction like GTA4/RDR2 but more realistic if possible.
- bailouts has correct momentum, not too small, not too high.
- when the player's body have friction with surface, it only bounce a little but maintain the GTA 4 rolling ragdoll.
- when the player is falling from heights, maintain GTA V's ragdoll.
- make it easier to get knocked off bikes. in GTA V getting hit by a car and instead of the player gets knocked to the road, the bike itself moves away and the player sit still is just so dumb.
- i would actually love a feature where if you purposely run to a wall you actually hit the wall and collapse to the ground instead of just awkwardly stop. that would make an awesome euphoria ragdoll montage, like, imagine hitting a wall so hard you knocked yourself back a few meters away.
- i also would actually love a feature where you can just fall off bikes out of failing to maintain balance like for example oversteer when your turns is too sharp.
so, that's my take on what kind of euphoria physics configuration i would like to have on GTA 6. i make a lot of configuration for GTA San Andreas ragdoll so i kinda understand how these configuration works.
this is the end of this thread. i'd like to hear y'all's feedback.

2023.06.08 23:27 Drakolf Dragon Rising- 24. Divine Agency:
She was malice and hatred, her efforts to undermine the Empire's efforts for peace- in spite of everything the Humans had done- had culminated in her attempting to simply raze everything and force the issue.
Brave and Noble Kurtulmak, God of Kobolds, had roared with all of the ferocity of a Dragon, sacrificing himself to ensure Bahamut, the Justicemaker, could strike Tiamat's heart, and in his final breath, begged Bahamut to protect his people.
"That's a load of fucking
bullshit!" I yapped.
The Priests of Bahamut recoiled at my words, clearly not anticipating that I- who miraculously returned, whose resurrection was
clearly a divine miracle, and was thus also clearly a sign of Bahamut's favor- would be pissed.
"There is absolutely
zero fucking way that actually happened!" I snapped.
It was a full day since my resurrection, and I'd been exhausted. I was
still exhausted, but I absolutely was not having
any fuckery. So I calmly asked them for the account of what had happened, after overhearing them talking about how Bahamut had
clearly brought me back and pushing the holy vestments on me.
Which I did wear, because I wasn't going to go around naked.
This of course was the wrong choice because it gave their story some implicit weight.
"Alright, so first off, Asgorath was the one who brought me back, not Bahamut." I said, shutting down that narrative
immediately. "Second, the only reason he did that was because I
guess I impressed him? Third, he brought me to Bahamut's palace, Bahamut didn't bring me there, and fourth-" I paused, my anger at the situation briefly giving way to a pang of grief. "And fourth, Kurtulmak was already dead when Bahamut arrived."
"Imperator, clearly you must still be exhausted and confused from-"
I flung Magic Missiles at him, he was sturdier than Humans, but he still died. "Bring him back!" I ordered. "I though he'd survive."
This of course terrified the priests, who did bring him back immediately.
I stood up and walked over to the window overlooking the area. The town had been eradicated, it was only thanks to our efforts to get Darastrixthurhi livable that the nursery survived.
"Do any of you remember what Christianity was like?" I asked.
"Y-yes, Imperator." One of the Priests stated.
"Stop acting like a Christian, and start following your God's tenets, or I swear upon mine I will kill you and leave him to deal with you."
"Ruuk, that's enough." Tallyn warned. "We lost most of our family, we didn't know what to think of what happened, we went with what made sense."
"I can understand that." I said. "Mistakes happen, and sometimes things are misunderstood." I shot a glare at the Priest. "I will not tolerate attempts at gaslighting me into believing your story. Bahamut is
ashamed of you."
He looked away, then looked back at me before bowing. "I am sorry, Imperator. Please forgive my transgression."
"I've already killed you once." I said. "You don't need forgiveness, you only need to do better. Make your actions your apology, words are meaningless before Bahamut." The way he stared at me with such profundity indicated that he had absolutely not considered that before.
"Tallyn, what the fuck is going on when something that basic escapes your notice?"
"Times have been difficult." Tallyn replied. "Galax was killed on that day, he gave his life protecting us from Tiamat's breath weapon."
"A shame. He was a dick, but he was at least on the right path. Who's in charge of the Temple?"
"That would be Mitne, the Dragonborn." Tallyn replied. "We've been quarantined since the attack, except this time, it's for a good reason."
"Yeah, Kurtulmak's divine essence is causing Humans to turn into Kobolds, but without his guidance." I said. "Have they at least let anyone out?"
"No. It extends to anyone we touch, anyone we try to heal. We chose to be quarantined."
This wasn't even square one. This was the table being flipped by an irate player who didn't get their way.
"Any negative effects on our people?" I asked. He shook his head. "Good, there's that, at least. Did any worshipers of Kurtulmak remain?"
"There were some holdouts, but..."
"But?" I pressed.
"We converted them." Tallyn said. "Not by force, I know you would never forgive us for that, but since Kurtulmak is dead... There's no point in worshiping a dead god."
"I see." I said. "I want everyone who was affiliated with Kurtulmak's Temple brought to me immediately."
They hesitated, but complied.
There were only fifty of them, all dressed in Bahamut's vestments.
"I'm going to give you all a choice." I said. "Remain in Bahamut's Temple, or join me in a fool's errand to worship a dead God." They looked at each other. "Until yesterday, not a single one of you made any efforts to worship him, I am currently the only one stubborn enough to do so. Now, make your choice. If you will join me, cast aside your vestments, and pledge your service to my God. If Bahamut complains, he can bother me about it."
The way they removed the vestments indicated they only went with Bahamut's Temple because they were convinced to, or maybe even forced to, I couldn't trust that Tallyn knew everything.
"Tonight." I said, looking at them critically. "We will be performing a public ritual in Kurtulmak's honor. If the Temple of Bahamut deigns to strike against us, do not kill them if you can help it, but make them suffer, for they act against their God's wishes."
Maybe. I wasn't entirely certain why he searched for me, or why Asgorath brought me back- the latter, at least, I could think as doing it just for the sake of doing it, maybe there was some sort of balance my being brought back would achieve, or maybe he wanted Kurtulmak's story to have a more satisfying ending, I wasn't certain, nor would I ever really
be certain.
All I knew was, if there was some way to bring him back, I would most certainly do it, and the first thing that came to mind was worship, there was a reason why Gods needed followers,
In spite of my exhaustion, keeping my resurrection a secret was a Bad Idea. If the Temple of Bahamut's new High Priest was a problem, he'd try to do more than a little gaslighting,
I looked at the Priests of Bahamut, who observed this all with disappointment in their eyes.
"Gather the people." I said. "Tell them their Imperator has words that must be heard."
One of them scowled, I walked up to her. "Is there going to be a problem?" I asked in a low tone. "Do not think for a second I did not see that look you gave me. A year may have passed, but do not forget the antagonism the Temple brought me under
better leadership. I was the one Bahamut directed when platinum was needed for your Temple, I was the one who had the platinum sword forged."
I paused, bending over to keep her looking at me as she tried to look away. "Your actions now dictate whether I return as a benevolent leader, or a cruel tyrant, I will happily go either way as long as what needs to get done gets done. I am
electing to do good, in honor of your God's pact with mine. I do not
need to be. Is this understood?"
"Yes, Imperator." She said.
"Direct your High Priest here." I said. "Tell him his Imperator wants him for words."
"Imperator, the High Priest does not answer to anyone other than Bahamut." Another spoke.
"He will, if he understands what's good for him." I said. "Last I recall, Mitne is not a Kobold, he was Human before he was reborn, and unless he has proven he understands what is necessary for the Warren, and not
just his God's glory, I cannot trust that the very concerning actions I've seen
today are not indicative of a more systemic problem."
"We serve Bahamut's will." The third Priest stated.
"Your names, tell me them." I said. They blinked, confused. "Are you disobeying a direct order from one whom Bahamut sought out in death, whom Asgorath saw fit to return to life?" I asked. "Or am I only a convenience if I am compliant to the machinations of the Temple?"
"Rahmut." The Priestess spoke, her gaze turned downward.
"Kuudra." The first spoke, his gaze meeting mine evenly.
"Farin, Imperator." The third spoke with slightly more respect.
"This one gets it." I said. "The people gathered now, the High Priest brought in here immediately. Failure to do either will be considered treason. Is this understood?"
"What, may I ask, is the punishment for treason?" Kuudra asked.
"For the time being, a sharp slap to the face. I'll move up to the death penalty if it gets particularly egregious."
They bowed.
"Fuck's sake, did you forget our salute?" I asked. They froze. "Out."
They left.
"Imperator." I looked toward the fifty, all saluted. I smiled and nodded.
Slowly, the people below gathered, Tallyn returned, and for a moment, there was a moment of tension between us.
"Does my manner of addressing your Temple displease you, Tallyn?" I asked.
"I'd be lying if I said it didn't." He replied. He held out a bundle of cloth, and I took it. My eyes widened as I saw the crimson sheen of the leather armor Kurtulmak had made for me.
"I thought I was incinerated?" I asked.
"Our Artificers classify it as a legendary item, unsurprising considering it was created by a God." He said. "It takes more than a solid blast to destroy an item like that. I may have needed to punch a few Priests to get it out, Bahamut will take it out of my hide at his discretion.
My once-blind eye ached.
"He will not." The words came unbidden from my own lips, I held hands grasping my shoulders firmly. Tallyn's eyes widened, he knelt immediately.
"I speak through your Imperator, and shall only reveal myself when necessary. Tallyn is, and always has been since that day two and one half years ago, my claimed agent upon this world." The chuckle I heard did not come from my own mouth, yet it reverberated throughout the room.
"He has made me almost regret giving him my regard many times." "What is your wisdom, my God?" Tallyn asked.
"Justice and Good above all else, yet even Evil may be paid unto Evil. So long as justice is served, so long as Good is preserved, the means to achieve that Justice may be forgiven. Ruuk understands what I need*, I will tolerate his indiscretions so long as it achieves that ultimate goal."*
I felt those hands loosen, for a moment, I felt like I was going to faint.
'I am here, Ruuk, as I always have been. Do what needs done.' Bahamut's voice echoed in my mind, and the aching in my eye faded.
"The people are gathered." Tallyn spoke. "Let them know their Imperator has returned."
I put on my armor, finding comfort in its presence, and I strode toward the balcony. It was dead silent before I showed up, and the only indication that anyone realized who I was, was a few startled gasps.
'We have imbued you with further power.' Bahamut spoke.
'A year is a long time to be gone, this gift will ensure the people understand who has advocated for your return.' I climbed onto the balcony.
"Altiuiri thran hansa tairais." My words reverberated with power, and I stepped off of the balcony. The screams were short lived, once the spectral wings burst out from my back. I descended such that everyone could clearly see me.
"By the effort of Bahamut, and the grace of Asgorath, your Imperator has returned." I spoke. "I am very, very disappointed, I am gone for one year, and everything goes to shit."
I made it obvious that, in spite of my clear disapproval with things, I was trying to be humorous. A handful of people laughed. Good, I didn't need fear quite yet. Everyone was dressed in some kind of vestment, which told me a lot about how the prior administration ran. I could feel Bahamut's anger burning within my heart.
'They are required by law to show fealty to me.' He spoke.
'I grant you permission to destroy this mockery of my will.' "To those who do not feel the
need to pledge your fealty to Bahamut, disrobe immediately. Those vestments are nothing but a mark of slavery to a faith you do not follow."
I could see palpable relief in the eyes of most of the people, who didn't even hesitate to undress. "To the rest, may your faith to your God be respected, you are the ones who have
use for such things- even so, you are not required to show your devotion in such a way. Disrobe, if it is your desire."
A handful of Kobolds undressed. "Place the vestments over there." I said, pointing at an empty spot. They did so.
'Now, burn this mockery against me.' I pointed my finger at the pile, each vestment folded with respect.
"Docar ethim nil'gnos." I spoke, and the firebolt streaked toward the pile, setting it ablaze instantly. There were a few shocked gasps.
"May this affront to Bahamut's ideals be burned away,
zyak qe coi."
"Tomorrow." I said. "I want each of you to write any complaints or criticisms you may have had in the preceding year. If for whatever reason you do not have access to paper or writing implements, I will ensure you have
something, if only to ensure clear communication. You will write your name, as well as anything that comes to mind, no matter how petty, no matter how insignificant. And if anyone bars your way toward delivering these to me
personally, you have every right to strike them down, as they will be a traitor to the Empire."
'Call out the name of Kova, have her approach.' "Kova." I spoke, "You are within this crowd, approach."
A female Kobold slowly made her way over to me. she was bruised, her eyes downcast. "What has happened to you?" I asked, lowering myself to stand before her.
"I- spoke out against the Temple." She said. "They beat me for blasphemy."
'This is my gift to you, it is your own power, you do not need to pray to me for this.' Bahamut spoke.
I gently rest my hand on her, guided by Bahamut, but not controlled. I spoke,
"Irisv itov erlelee." I felt a rush of power completely unlike Sorcery, the bruises healed, her dull scales regained their luster, she looked up at me with wide eyes.
"Brutality to our own is evil." I spoke. "Speak freely, your voice is the voice of the Empire, as are the voices of your fellow Kobolds. In benevolence or tyranny, I would never silence you."
I had some very sharp words for Mitna.
I pulled away from her and flew up again. "Tomorrow." I spoke. "Though I work within the gifts given to me by Bahamut, I will be leading a ritual in honor of Kurtulmak." A quote came to mind. "That is not dead which can eternal lie; and with strange aeons even death may die. Until the day I die, I will not give up on my God,
our Emperor. Go in peace."
I flew back up to the throne room. "Tallyn." I said. "Why have
beatings occurred under your leadership?" I asked.
"Wait,
beatings?" He asked.
Footsteps echoed as one of the Priests returned. "Imperator." Farin stated, he started to bow, caught himself, and then saluted. "The High Priest has refused to see you." He said.

2023.06.08 23:18 soviet_kiwi Cub Cadet problem
I have a cub cadet 1525 that I decided to change out the air filter, oil and filter, fuel filter and blades. All things are the same as before. Engine works perfect with pto off but as soon as I turn on blades it acts weird. You can hear it drop power before quickly pick back up but now engine slowly revs higher and higher as long as I sit there idling. When trying to mow it very easily gets bogged down on very short grass if I don't go really slow. Funny enough it cuts the grass cleaner than ever before.

2023.06.08 23:00 industrial_fukery Thinking of documenting myself rebuilding my train wreck of a life in a brutally honest way. Just dont know if my story would be interesting so im hoping to see what yall think.
Want to see a documentary about my life? Watch Joe Dirt.
In the last year my life has imploded, it happened so fast I dont even know how it happened. I have had an extremely unique life that gave me a personality to say the least. A few years ago I started a tiktok and mainly recorded what I was doing for work with some colorful commentary. To my surprise it exploded, I found a niche of regular blue collar workers that could relate and had multiple videos go well past 5m+ views and was outside of 100k followers after a few months. My life collapsed when I was scammed during the home buying process and it straight up broke me. Combine that with watching people steal my videos and make money off them was the final straw. I havent made content in 2 years. I never filmed myself in any of my videos so its was sad watching others gain from me, I felt exploited and I constantly come across my own videos attached to other accounts. Ive never had an easy life, been on my own since I was 17 and watching my bank accounts go to zero after grinding for 15 years threw me into a depression like you wouldnt believe. Im still very much in it. I spent everything trying to get my money back through the courts only to watch the person who scammed me die from cancer. This isnt a sob story, just my starting point if I decide to basically expose myself via youtube.
Long story short these last few years have been hell, I was desperate to figure out how to get out of this funk and Psychedelics crossed my radar and i took the plunge with a group who does underground psychedelic therapy sessions and it allowed me to think in a way I never had before. Basically it made me human again, ive never been a deep thinker or thought about why and where my actions come from until DMT came along and cracked me upside the head and made me realize ive been so focused on getting to the finish line I didnt realize the race was already half over. That was a very sobering moment.
I want to be authentic and basically vlog where im at in life and use social media to hold myself accountable. I also think documenting this could be relatable for some, I have a good job that pays decently but nobody told me how expensive it is to be poor, my shitty motel is friggen 1500 a month and is full of people who lost their spark towards life, I got a second spark and want to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks including a 2nd push at taking content creation seriously and possibly using it as a way out of homelessness. Im not the begging type and refuse to ask for help, while ive been radio silent on social media for the last year ive used the time to get good at metal art that recreate some of the crazy crap ive seen in DMT land using physics and light. Part of the channel idea would be building them and explaining how and why its working. Im lucky and have a job where I have access to any metalworking tools I could want and my boss is cool with me filming. Combine that with the fact ive been turning wrenches in the industrial world for over a decade I can build just about anything. I hate 99% of the stuff I create but these metal light sculptures are cool af. They take hundreds of hours to build due to research but I plan to raffle them off and hopefully keep engagement up. The sculptures are different enough where I know people would like them and hard enough to build I dont think people would copy it. I would start posting on my tiktok again to drive traffic to my YouTube. I feel incredibly fortuante to have an audience from day one.
So now that you have a little background of where ive been and what got me to now do you think theres something here or am I just a rambling idiot with a pipe dream? Ive had the most untraditional life and somehow always manage to survive and feel its time to tell my story and get to where I want to be. Im an extremely flawed person, rather then continue to hide them I want to expose them to the world, address them and figure out how to fix them. Ive looked for channels similar but theyre all geared towards "normal people" not redneck blue collar folk's like myself. I dont want to break the sub rule for self promotion so I wont post the sculptures unless its ok to do so.
Rip my idea apart please.

2023.06.08 22:59 JulianSkies Emergency Services Guild R&D: Stampede Studies
This little piece I wrote because I have zero mental energy to write something I care too much aobut the format and quality, and i've been wanting to have a look at this topic for a while.
Don't expect a lot of quality, but here have a thing.
---
[This video is shown in its raw form for purposes of transparency of the procedures. For the edited version please visit the Emergency Services Guild public-facing site]
[Content Warning: This video contains images of both stampedes and wartime stampede incidents of the following situations: Human First Contact, Operation Blindside, Sillis Occupation, Kolshian Scouting of Venlil Prime]
[This video will be subtitled instead of utilizing audio translation]
The camera’s view is completely obscured by a grey mass “I think it’s running, can you check it for me?” says a deep bassy voice of a human.
“Yes, i’m getting the audio and a very good closeup for your shirt” the voice of a venlil sounds hoarse
The grey mass recedes and the room becomes visible. A large naturally-lit room of plain appearance, there is a long table set in the center of it surrounded by chairs, the table itself is clearly designed with a holographic projector and at the far end of the room there is a large display.
There are seven people present, three humans dressed in grey outfits with red highlights, each one of them with a different insignia emblazoned on their breast but all three of them have similar themes, a helmet, an axe and a ladder is present on all three designs. Four venlil represent, two with sashes of office with the white with red stripe color and the exterminator’s pyre-and-shield insignia and two with armbands with the red pawprint.
“Alright, before we start the actual meeting, can I ask why are they here?” says one of the humans, well-built and with a lighter complexion, pointing at the two venlil with sashes.
“Because it’s part of our job? Because we’re involved?” says the one with greyish wool and dark spots
“I’m sorry if i’m skeptical why an exterminator is in a meeting involving public safety and stampede response”
“Because” the venlil’s voice becomes louder “It’s our job. And I’m already brahking tired of this whole act. I’ve heard every variation of ‘you shouldn’t be the ones doing this’ you can imagine. Every human I’ve met has said this, multiple times” he slams his fists on the table
“And I brahking agree, look!” he points at one of the venlil with the armbands “Our jobs literally overlap, why do we even HAVE this overlap? What could the exterminator’s guild do in a stampede that the emergency services guild couldn’t? Why is it that any job that requires you to have the slightest bit of tail to do it they drop on us? I don’t brahking know!” he’s taking deep breaths “So… Why don’t we skip this part and just get to the meeting?”
The humans are taken aback, while it seems like the venlil were quite unfazed at the sudden energetic outburst in a strange reversal of the usual reactions. “Not… Quite what I was expecting” that first human adds “Alright, I’ll keep my thoughts to myself for now”
With that, the human that had been adjusting the camera sits down and the arrangement of seating is visible clearly: The four venlil are on one side of the table while the three humans are on the other. One of the venlil with the armbands speaks up “We are gathered at this moment for a presentation of the United Nations’ Extraplanetary Emergency Response Division’s research on the nature and possible mitigation of stampedes”
“Present for this meeting are three human representatives of the UNEERD, Captain Fabia” a human female with short crimson hair and wiry build nods “Captain Jorge” the first human nods “And Captain Ishikawa” a human much taller human with shortly cut dark hair and mildly reddened skin speaking of a disagreement with the eternal twilight nods.
“Present are also four venlil representatives. Representing the Exterminator’s Guild are Division Lead Toss” the venlil who had the outburst earlier nods “Of the Stampede Response division, Division Lead Tunam” a venlil with a strangely reddish coat halfway between pink and red nods “Of the Behavioral Studies division” the speaking venlil himself, best identified by an eyepatch on his right eye, nods “Representing the Emergency Services Guild is me, Division Lead Onam of the Stampede Response division, and Division Lead Liram” the venlil beside him nods, a woman with a distinctive vertical striping pattern “Of the Medical Response division.”
Onam takes a deep breath “You may begin the presentation, Captain Jorge” he’s being incredibly professional
With that, Jorge uses a holopad to summon an image on the monitor at the far end, a simple bullet point list “Though all present here already know, I’ll state it for the record. The ESG has requested from the UNEERD an independent study of mitigating techniques for stampede events, both to help us increase our understanding of the local needs and to acquire an outside perspective that may improve their own understanding”
“We will be presenting our current findings, which have proven to be pretty surprising in my opinion” he gives another command to his holopad moving to the next slide “I’ll begin with the most important finding before we look into how we’ve reached this conclusion. But in effect, a proper stampede event can actually severely reduce to completely eliminate casualties in a situation of panic, however, those events can devolve into panicked flight as well as not every species is capable of those”
At that, Toss tilts his head to the side “Of all things… Stampedes preventing casualties? That’s really difficult to believe”
Ishikawa offers a shrug “I know. I’ll be honest we kind of came into this with, let’s say… A bit of a bias against you. But the observations held true, and it turns out the situation is considerably more complex than it seems”
Jorge nods “Take note this is mostly a preliminary study, we don’t have a lot of data of the sort we needed.” he pulls up another bullet list in the screen “Our work was focused more on the behavioral end, as you’ve more than proven to have the infrastructure and technical superiority here, but we have found a distinct lack of behavioral studies on stampedes”
Tunam takes a deep breath “Sure. More stuff we got wrong, as always” but before one of the humans can say something he waves dismissively with his tail “It’s alright, you’re just doing your job. It just gets exhausting hearing this every damn paw. Sorry for the interruption, please continue”
Jorge has a look on his face for a moment, something like worry and sympathy, before continuing “We have performed our studies by examining footage of stampede events with specific characteristics. First, monospecies events, with three examples. The stampede events during our first contact, as a sample of stampede events amongst the Venlil, recovered footage of an event in the Cradle during Operation Blindside, as a sample of stampede events amongst the Gojid. Take note that while this particular footage was from a situation far from any attack sites and before the arxur invasion, the reliability of it is shaky because of the wartime situation. And a stampede event on Sillis that happened recently in response to peacekeeper forces”
As he talks, three of the bullet points light up “Additionally, we later compared stampede events involving multispecies groupings. Particularly we have studied the very recent events here on Venlil Prime during the kolshian threat as well as a second event that occurred on Sillis involving a damaged dam” the last two bullet points light up
The female firefighter pipes up “We’re going to treat you like adults here but early warning we’re not going to be censoring any of the footage. I imagine given you all work with this there shouldn’t be anything you’re not familiar with”
The one-eyed venlil makes an assentive motion with his ears “Sadly, we’ve all seen enough of the carnage to be used to it”
Jorge moves on to the next slide, which contains video. He passes the holopad off to the human woman at his side “Your turn, Fabia”
She nods “We’ll start by examining this footage of the first contact. First tell me if there’s anything unusual you notice here” she says, letting the footage play. It’s an aggregation of a few different cameras, apparently from residential apartments. It shows the residents, all Venlil, running away from their apartments and spilling over in the streets, the residents of each apartment building start running towards where presumably the nearest bunker is. It only takes a few moments before they start pushing each other out of the way and the ones at the fringes of the herd end up unable to follow the group as the ever-growing mass of people start to push them against the walls of the buildings and side streets, a little while longer the first tramplings start to happen.
Tunam has had a very careful eye on the footage “This looks like a textbook case of a stampede. Nothing particular to it” he flicks his ear to the side
Taking the sign, Toss adds in “Dreadful, as always, but not even the worst example I’ve seen”
Onam sighs “I remember that one. Wouldn’t want to be those two knowing all of this was caused by them. But still, a pretty normal stampede, if anything a mild one”
Liram makes a dismissive wave of her tail “Didn’t even manage to overflow the hospitals, so i’m calling that one a win”
The sunburnt human bites his lower lip, trying to keep something inside. But ultimately it spills over “How bad is it for those kinds of responses?” it’s not so much an accusatory tone as much as a sad one.
“Very” is the only answer Onam gives.
At that, Fabia waves “And here is where a human, or more specifically outsider perspective helped.” she presses a couple of controls in the holopad, rewinding the footage to the start “I want you to pay attention to how this particular herd moves, just the one from the beginning of the video”
The footage plays again, showing the residents of the apartments rushing out, most take the stairs while a few take the elevators. There’s parents carrying their pups and some elderly being rushed along. The footage switches to the outside view where the whole herd of venlil from the apartment seems to erupt out of the front doors at the same time, it follows them for a bit until they’re closer to another group leaving their residence before Fabia pauses “Here’s where we noticed something, how much panic do you see in here?”
It’s Tunam’s turn to respond “Normal levels, i’d say, nothing out of ordinary. Which, they were expecting a raid or worse, so keep that in mind.”
Fabia nods “And that’s why the difference is important. Pay attention to their movement” she rewinds to the moment where they’re leaving the apartment building “Pay close attention to their feet” she zooms the video
The four venlil focus on it, seemingly unable to see what is happening “It takes humans at least months of training to be able to do this. They’re all moving in perfect synchrony” she rewinds one more time, and with the information out there it’s clear that at this point, this herd’s footsteps are moving in perfect lockstep “And I have severe doubts those people have any sort of training”
Onam turns his one good eye towards Fabia, then back at the footage, then back at Fabia “That… Yes, I can see that. But that has to be a fluke, if that is true then we wouldn’t have tramplings”
In response, Fabia changes footage. It shows a different apartment building, but the contents are similar: Up until the herd is a good distance away from the building their movement is synchronous and even the exit, though clearly panicked, seems to flow without injury. She shows footage from three more apartments “We thought that too, but this pattern repeats every time. This is a level of instinctive organization that’s, to me, supernatural. But at some point it breaks down”
The medical lead had his eyes closed in thought for a while now “That… Now that you say that… Stampede injuries are always outside. Well, no, not always of course. But less than twelve percent of them happen inside buildings, the vast majority happens on the streets”
The human woman passes the datapad aside, Ishikawa picks it up and calls up the footage again. It’s the same as the initial one, but it shows two herds approaching “And here’s where it breaks down. Look” he plays it as everyone pays much closer attention to the details of the video. The two different herds simply crash into each other, causing people to fall over and the two previously-synchronized groups to fall completely out of order.
Tunam’s tail swipes a short arc forwards “Ah, I see. Each herd is acting like a single unit at that point, so this situation is like two people running into each other. Now they’re on the floor and confused” he stares as the footage continues, and what was two groups ends up splitting into four completely disorganized groups “And the herds are unable to reform after that”
“This is where i’m going to introduce some specific terms we’re using here” Ishikawa adds “Specifically we’re referring to the organized movement portion as a ‘stampede’ proper. The situation where everything breaks down and they are completely disorganized we’re referring to as ‘panicked flight’, much how it is for us humans. And this specific situation that caused the breakdown of the stampede we’re calling an ‘impact’ event, given it was two herds impacting against each other”
Ishikawa then changes to a different piece of footage “And this will be the second breakdown situation we’ve recognized, a ‘command failure’ event.” he starts the footage, it’s a proper stampede, the video is from a camera on a defensive bunker proper, the masses trying to get inside are visible at the bottom of the image. Something happens in the incoming stampede, it slows down a little bit, before suddenly the back half overtakes the front half, tossing people into the ground.
“Notice how the approaching herd seems to be behaving as we’ve initially expected, even going so far as slowing down to prevent from barrelling into the people waiting to enter the bunker” he adds, before rewinding to just before the breakdown and zooming the video “But notice here, at some point those two start having a discussion while they run” the video is zoomed on a pair of venlil who seem to be shouting, though the video has no audio “Shortly after, the entire formation breaks and the rear speeds up, trampling the front”
The crimson venlil adds “They were following the one on the right…” he has a certain tone of awe on his voice “They all had their attention trained on him”
At that the female firefighter makes a questioning noise “How’d you figure that out?”
Tunam does a quick sideways flick of his ears in a dismissal move “I guess you don’t know how to see where we’re focusing our attention on when we don’t have to turn our entire heads for it. But pay attention to the ears, when they’re completely upright to take in sound they’ll be tracking whoever the focus is. As you can see, they were all focusing on the one on the right, which was the one being yelled at” he focuses on the now still image for a while “You can see he has his tail in his hands, while the one yelling at him has his chest first ruffled out.” his eye seems to focus beyond the image now “This herd didn’t break down because of another, but they lost guidance, is that it?”
Jorge sighs, but he has a slight smile “See, I told you it’d be wise to have at least one venlil in our team. Just from being able to read their body language he skipped past two weeks of comparisons”
Ishikawa gives a light sigh “But that’s correct. This is a ‘command failure’ situation. We’ve noticed that in every stampede there seems to be someone that works at least as pace setting, if not straight up herd leader. It seemed in cases to mostly be arbitrary, but once someone got in that position everyone would follow that one”
Jorge picks up the holopad again “Next up” the screen changes again, it’s another video that is quite clearly not on Venlil Prime “This one happened during peacekeeping operations on Sillis…” there’s a certain inflection of disgust in the human’s voice as he mentions ‘peacekeeping’ “You probably already know what to expect but I want you to focus on the differences here”
The video that plays out starts with what seems like a protest in front of a UN field base, the recording is from the body cam of a soldier on top of a watchtower. There’s a moderate mass of tilfish with all sorts of signs, there’s shouting. The camera turns to show an APC get close to the mass from inside the base, there’s shouting from the human guards but nothing happens, until the APC revs up its engine heavily. At the angry roar of the vehicle the protesters started to bolt, four large groups forming in different directions.
The camera follows one such group as it starts heading off down a street, unlike the venlil stampedes this one starts from moment zero with trampling and people moving into each other. At some point it’s visible someone at the middle of the formation seems to hesitate and slow down, causing the entire mass to slow down for a moment, and then someone else near the slower raises their arms. At this point this is too far from the soldier’s body camera to catch noise, but what seems to be a discussion has happened, and suddenly the stampede speeds up and the scene that follows gets considerably worse as the mass turns into a tangle of limbs cross across eachother and tearing itself apart as they try to move in the same general direction.
“It started bad” says Toss “But it got worse. I’ve never seen a stampede get worse like that”
Onam puts his tail on the table, tapping the surface gently with it “It happens as it grows in size but this group didn’t change. That did seem like a command failure situation causing it to get even worse, yes, but they seemed to already be very out of sync from the start”
The human with the holopad nods “And that’s the biggest failure of your treatment of stampedes showing itself.” he rewinds the video to when the APC starts roaring “And honestly, we were stuck on that failure mode for a while too until one of the younger members of our team spoke their mind. Pay closer attention to the amount of damage that is happening during the stampede here” they all lean closer as they watch the start again “How many wounds are you seeing?”
It’s the one-eyed venlil that answers “None… They’re not trampling eachther, they’re climbing each other, and walking under the others, somehow without hurting themselves?” his voice has a definite awe to it.
Jorge nods “Yep. Tilfish, both from their body plan and however way their kinesthetic sense works, appear to be fully capable of moving over, through and under each other like they weren’t even there. That seems to be pretty unique to their species”
It’s the red furred venlil that comments now “But they lose that coordination when the command failure happens, so they start to miss their movements and now we have limbs tangled on themselves and tearing themselves apart”
“Comparing medical reports from this with medical reports from the first incident with just venlil” starts the female firefighter “We see different wound patterns. A monospecies panicked flight of tilfish will lead primarily to damaged and removed limbs while one of venlil will lead to crushing wounds. Because your herd movement patterns and capacities are different, when the stampede fails into panicked flight the wounds are different”
Liram tilts her head to the side “That’s what you meant. We… Speh, the entire federation, has been treating stampedes like they behave the same for every species” her tail swats left to right for a while with an excessive amount of force “But this makes sense. And I presume you have an example of a species that doesn’t stampede up next, right?”
Jorge nods, moving to the next video. It shows a wide, long street “This one was recovered from the Cradle, this happens during the strikes on the orbital defenses but before the first orbital drop. Meaning, long before any ground operation starts” the video is sped up considerably at the start, the trickle of gojid into the streets is slow as to require that, but the flows from the buildings and side streets slowly thicken as more and more people start fleeing away from the camera’s direction. The mass that forms is enormous, taking up the entire street, and to flows and moves as if it wasn’t a mass of people, not even like a mass of animals, but it flows like a river, like it ceased to contain living beings and it now contained fluid particles.
Tunam, whose expression has been growing more and more serious by the moment, initiates “I… I’ve never seen a stampede like… It really shows the difference seeing the comparison, here we didn’t have groups forming at exit points and leaving, we have a slow trickle until the mass of people is…”
Ishikawa nods “Until the mass of people starts behaving like a fluid, completely detached from the will of the people inside of it” he puts his elbows in the table “Very much how it works with humans. At that point, you just need to let the flow move you and hope for the best, while trying to keep yourself safe”
Jorge zooms in the image, which appears to be sufficiently high quality to get detailed images of any particular member of the mass “You can even see the measures they take to prevent harming themselves” he directs the zoom to an area where you see the gojid have somehow arranged themselves back-to-back and front-to-front as they’re pushed and shoved, trying to avoid harming themselves on each other. It’s visible, however, they have no control over the motions as they’re simply being moved by the mass. One unlucky woman trying to hold on to some form of backpack gets pulled under the mass of bodies by the article. Most gojid seem to be taking conscious effort to keep their quills from flaring out, but many are failing and some trickle of blue can be seen on some backs
“Of course” the zoomed out area directs to a different section while zooming out “This is neither instinctual nor organized, as you can see the vast majority of the cases are like… This…” the best description of the moving mass of very sharp people being dislocated by nothing but panic and fluid forces is… A meat grinder. There’s more blue than brown visible and the speed with which the human moves the video elsewhere is quite indicative of how none of the present trained emergency workers had the stomach to witness it.
Liram has stood up “By the void… But- But- There’s gojid population on this planet! I’ve never seen anything like this when they’re involved!” there’s straight up panic in her voice.
With a command, Jorge moves on to the next slide “And that segues well into the next topic of research, multispecies stampedes” there’s a still image of a large street in the capital, mostly empty at this point “As you can imagine there’s behavioral differences in multispecies situations”
Jorge passes the holopad over to Ishikawa “This one is pretty recent, hell I still remember it myself. The kolshian probing attack” the video starts, and for a few seconds the slow foot traffic of the mostly empty street seems undeterred. Then, most everyone still walking the streets, which here in the capital means a variety of species from venlil and human to takkan and iftali, picks up their holopads at once. And with different degrees of urgency and reading speed, they start running.
Nothing seems to progress further than that other than people entering buildings, but after a while longer it happens, groups start leaving the buildings in large herds “As you can see” Ishikawa pauses “We see them exiting buildings in large groups, just as the stampeding species do” he let it play again. Just like in the first two videos the large groups seem to be moving roughly in coordination within themselves, but it seems to be a much more frail kind of coordination as the group’s form changes and shifts as the people inside adjust their position.
Ishikawa zooms into one of the groups “Here, check their movement” it’s visible that only a portion of them is moving in actual synchrony, the venlil as well as a pair of sulean and three krakotl seem to be moving very much in lockstep, and one human who seems to be acting as a leader as she points and shouts. Meanwhile the other humans, two takkan and a gojid aren’t moving quite in synchrony but seem capable of keeping themselves in formation thanks to the others around them. “Here we see the effect of a mixed species setting. The stampeding species manage to give enough structure to the group that the others can follow”
Tunam is staring intensely at the video “But that’s a very fragile configuration, isn’t it? The ones organizing on instinctive drive can’t possibly keep this much structure for long? Without training this is going to break down quickly”
Ishikawa nods “That’s what we thought as well but…” he lets the video play, and they watch that mass of bodies continue to move mostly organized down the street. At some point another equally mixed group starts approaching from the side, but one of the takkan appears to start shouting. But instead of things breaking down, what happens is that both groups merge together, there’s some minor bodily impacts but from the visible motions of the group there’s some shared apologies and they continue moving at a slower speed, matching the speed of the second group “That doesn’t happen, the whole situation is even more stable”
The video continues for a while, and Ishikawa zooms to the front of the formation. The human who’d been the apparent leader taps rather violently a venlil on the shoulder. There apparently seems to be a verbal altercation, but both give each other affirmative visual cues and the venlil speeds up a little bit. And the rest of the herd matches pace as the group changes direction to another street “And this is a smooth change of command, presumably the human that’d been the unofficial lead figured out who knew the shortest path to the bunker and they’ve began following him instead”
The crimson venlil sinks down in his chair “That’s… I’ve never seen a stampede move quite like that, even multispecies ones. It has to be you…”
“Much as i’d love to give us all the credit” Jorge starts “I don’t quite think it is. Or rather, it’s not something i’d say is inherently human. If it was, once that group changed command they’d break down, or it wouldn’t be able to merge that easily with a takkan mediating. No, I think it was just those specific humans being able to keep their cool that helped it.”
He looks at Tunam for a half second before continuing “Everyone else seems to be… Very prone to panicking quickly. And while we’re just as prone to panic we don’t seem to get there as fast as the others. For some reason. Keeping a bit of a calmer head allows the prevention of command failures and the overall effect of reducing the panic level in a herd enough that any member present has enough wits to negotiate through an impact as well”
Upon noticing Tunam’s souring expression, Ishikawa gives the pad another command to move on to the next video “To give a bit more context to an important part of the behavior we’re analyzing here, we have this one footage of what is essentially a stampede event, but not one most people would recognize as such”
It seems to be footage of Sillis again, most obvious by the number of tilfish present. The footage is from a cargo hauling drone in a work site by a river at the bottom of a dam. There are a handful of humans, a half dozen venlil and a gojid all wearing construction uniforms identifying them as part of one of the UN relief forces, the various tilfish around are also wearing bright construction vests and protective gear and with the exception of two of them, they seem to be trying their best to stay away from the others. Suddenly, the gojid who’s near the river looks down at his feet, then starts running away shouting. At that everyone other than the tilfish start running as well, the group slows down for a moment as the tilfish workers run towards the group and they all continue together up a hill. A few seconds after they crest the hill there’s suddenly water in the worksite as the dam cracks and collapses. The group stops at the top of the hill, and quickly they’ve brought up holopads to start doing damage assessment as a few head closer to the rushing waters.
“This, as you can see, looks nothing like what you expect out of a stampede. We’ve interviewed those workers remotely to get a better grasp of what happened” Fabia adds “Thanks to their sensitivity to ground vibrations, the gojid worker caught the dam’s damage early and called for the others to run, which caused the work crew to evacuate to higher ground.” she waves at Ishikawa, who rewinds the video and zooms on the group as it runs “As you can see, we have the organized movement of a stampede proper” and known his cue he skips ahead to the group on top of the hill “And they stopped quickly, as well.
The human with reddened skin rewinds the video again to show the moment the group slows down “And here’s the particular detail I want you to pay attention to. Notice the group formed when the gojid called out the emergency, but only two tilfish joined it. The two that were already talking with the UN forces”
Onam tilts his head, clearly in thought as his blind eye is facing the screen now “You’re saying there’s an influence of familiarity?”
In answer, Ishikawa shakes his head in negative “Yes and no, we believe this is an effect of threat-assessment. The two that trusted the veracity of the information about the danger moved as quickly as the rest of the herd, which had managed to form thanks to the presence of the venlil and tilfish. Only after the other tilfish recognized those two did they start moving”
“And the whole group slowed down for them, without breaking apart” the crimson venlil adds “This is very much not anything we’d consider a stampede, however as you said the synchronized movement happens and they even managed to clear through the obstacles in a surprisingly safe manner on the way out”
Jorge picks up the holopad again and moves on to the next slide “So to sum up our theories. Certain species have an innate capacity of large-numbers collective movement, what we call a stampede is simply that natural capacity displaying itself during mass flight. That capacity can be harnessed to reduce casualties of panicked flight by giving the moving group an organized form, but only as long as the organization can be sustained. This mass movement capacity also applies to situations where other species would still perform in an organized fashion, but its instinctive nature severely speeds up the process.”
Before he can continue, however, Tunam mutters a little too loudly “But the results you’re going to give us are going to be the same brahking thing as always”
Jorge ignores the muttering “To begin with we’re going to suggest a system similar to the fire brigades we have on Earth. Essentially, any group large enough, such as a company or an apartment building, needs to have a handful of people with some training in emergency procedures for fire escape, so they can guide the rest of the people.”
Ishikawa intrudes “And in countries with higher seismic activities like mine, those procedures also include how to deal with earthquakes for example”
Jorge nods, and takes a deep breath “Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Your threat-assessment skills are horrible, for some reason- No, I think for reasons we’re all acquainted well enough by now, you’re all very likely to jump at shadows, far more than you should. However, your flight responses are part of your nature, trying to fight your nature never, ever works, you always have to work with it.” he’s staring directly at Tunam, who has met his stare with his right eye “So the primary suggestion is to introduce a form of ‘emergency herd lead’ training in organizations so that we’re certain there are individuals capable of keeping command and a lower baseline of chaos during a stampede event as well as further research into better methods of performing such a function”
Tunam doesn’t flinch from the stare “Come on, say it”
“No. As much as I’d love to say something like what you think I will, I’ll be honest. You guys expect to face orbital bombardment threats with enough frequency that civilian bunkers are part of city planning. Not a human alive today could imagine living in this nightmare their entire lives, I’m going to give you some credit here. Plus, in real threat situations as seen in the last video, you have very beneficial threat responses.” Jorge adds
Jorge waits for a few moments, then continues “That concludes the presentation of the early findings and initial measures we’ve identified. It should be noted that this topic will require much further research, preferably from a multidisciplinary group with representatives of multiple species. Though those findings may be applicable at the present our suggestion is that any action taken at this moment be only provisional and on an experimental level until further research can be made”
Onam stands up “Very well, with that I declare the meeting concluded” he takes in a deep breath and sits back down, making an annoyed sound with his voice as he swats his tail to the side “What is it about you humans that you could see all those things?”
Fabia shrugs, sitting more relaxed in her chair “I don’t think it’s something special, we’re just outsiders with a different perspective.”
A loud screeching noise can be heard, and as everyone turns to face Tunam the source of the noise is visible as the hand he had on the table had dug its claws into it “It’s not like we haven’t found out those things before, isn’t it?” he doesn’t seem to be directing his words to anyone in particular
The one-eyed venlil tilts his head to the side “We did have that work group almost fifteen cycles ago. I remember they were considering a suggestion like what we just had right now, but the work group never went anywhere and we never got any real results”
Tunam stands up suddenly, sending his chair scattering “One more to the list I guess…” there’s a tiredness to his voice “I should figure out where they wound up…” he turns around and goes to leave “We’re done here, yes? I should go” and stalks out.
The remaining people in the room look at his exit confusedly, as Ishikawa comes over to turn off the camera the others can be seen leaving.

2023.06.08 19:49 Ancient_Earther Reconciling with WP isn't the issue, reconciling with myself is the problem
Reconciling with WP isn't the issue, reconciling with myself is the problem.
This is gonna be a long one, apologies in advance and much appreciation to anyone that gets to the end. Been hovering in here for a while and it's been a good source for me.
I've loved her since I first met her 16+ years ago. Literally at first sight, to me she was the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen and coolest person I'd ever met and genuinely still is. Now she's my best friend, my fiance and mother to my 3 kids. It's been 16+ years of ups n downs, nothings been perfect but it's been pretty cool and we've both helped each other through rough spots both with ourselves and each other.
2020 and the chaos that came with it hit us like a nuclear bomb, locked in the house with two very young kids at the time unable to even go to the park across the road, in a block of flats filled with people that absolutely hated us and caused a lot of problems for us. Both of us still worked during the initial lockdowns however my hours got cut (money stayed the same, I just had more time locked in the house in increasingly declining conditions) but she started taking on more hours, spending more time hanging out with her work friends and arguing with me when she was home. She broke up with me in September that year and I moved into a friend's house for a while. 2 weeks go by, constantly messaging me and needing me around to help with the kids, shopping and still wanting me around for dinner time. 2 weeks go by, I've had the kids at my friend's for the weekend, shes to pick them up after work but she insists I come home, hang out and watch a movie with her. Ends up late, she insists I stay the night, stuff happens that only couples do etc. A week of confusion ensues, I point out how wierd it is were broken up but still acting like a couple so I stay at my friend's house for a couple of nights as neither of us seemed to know what was going on, she hangs out with me there one night and we get into a blazing argument because of how wierd everything had gotten and she leaves the next day, everything's upside down, I'm in a complete hole and I end up doing the thing I swore I would do and begged her to come get me so we could just move past it all. She does, takes me home and that was that, back together and working things out, broken up for 2 and a half weeks total but with constant communication, visits and yeah, other couple stuff.
Skip to December that year, few months later on the day of my kids birthday no less and I get a message from her ex boyfriends fiance including screenshots of chats that he'd been having with my fiance, inappropriate and lovey dovey. I confront my fiance with this and she tearfully admits an EA with him for a few months and then slept with him a few times after she broke up with me. All of a sudden I'm a member of the shittest club ever and on the typical journey, trickle truthing, gaslighting screaming matches, guilt, accusations and I'm delving into a DnD books worth of lore which just runs deeper and deeper and it turned out her work friends she was hanging out with were also heavily involved and encouraging of the whole thing. She's since cut off contact with these witches.
We got through it and have a better relationship now than we've ever had. Genuinely still adore her and love her in ways I could never give to anyone else. She's my only real love interest, only girl I've ever been with physically, mother of my kids and the thought of her being made to suffer because of me just kills me really so I couldn't make her a single mother and throw all the new found love and adoration she now has for me back in her face when all she wants to do is move on and be happy.
Even now, just a few weeks after a casual conversation led me to put the pieces together that she actually cheated on me with him before, right at the start, 16 years ago she drunkenly went home with him after a gig, I still love her more than anything else. Young, stupid etc and I don't want to bring it up with her out of fear of how that conversation would go and what the outcome of it would be. But this new revelation has really hit me in a bad place and I'm only just managing to paper over the cracks.
Anyway, despite everything, I want to be with her and spend the rest of my life with her. I love her truly unconditionally. But it feels like it's came at a great cost, my own autonomy and independence gone, my ability to make my own decisions are greatly compromised, my self esteem crushed and there's the overall sense that I'm not allowed to have a change of heart, make mistakes and be forgiven for them but I have to forgive and accept others.
The ex boyfriend is an unemployed alcoholic who treated her like shit and cheated on her when they were together and in 2020 with two step kids under his care, was cheating on his fiance who was pregnant at the time and is also allegedly abusive towards who's own family and friends have abandoned. I don't hate him as much as I genuinely feel sorry for him.
Anyway, it feels like reconciling with her is disconnecting me from myself in ways. I've relationship'd myself into a corner for 16 years, all I have is her, my work and my kids. Zero friends, outside hobbies or sense of community which should be fine as a mid 30s family man with a decent job and is as loner minded as I am. But with everything that's happened, I feel like I've missed out and committed myself to a life with someone who, under certain conditions didn't let being in a relationship with me stop her from missing out and it's pushing me inside myself and away from any sort of change I want to make, as if by being steadfastly opposed to hurting her is stopping me from figuring myself out.
Not sure what the point of this post is but thanks in advance to anyone that got through it.

2023.06.08 18:49 mruniverse28 ‘13 Model S Error Experience
| This is the 3rd time it's been in the shop; unable to drive or the error of being unable to operate if stopped. The car has been gone since the beginning of February, awaiting parts with no real update or communication from the team unless I show up at the service center. I even had the messaging option for service removed from my app. Anyone else experiences that? More details below: In November, it broke and gave me the error message that it might be unable to start if turned off. I was parking when I read this, and it was too late. I had it towed to the service center after trying to start it several times over the next 24 hours. The issue being the car couldn't regulate the current between its different parts, so it shut down to not catch fire. A piece of the AC/DC charging circuit needed to be replaced. I wish I had the part names, but everything is in the app, and I can’t look at old service appointments while in Service mode. Once fixed, $1,234 for this issue, and I picked up the car. Drove off the service center lot, and the error came up again. I was taking my husband to work, so I decided not to put it in park. Along the drive, the message would come and go. In about 20 minutes, I was back at the service center. After several weeks I was told the car was ready again. My estimate was around $2600, and I was pretty upset. But when I went to pick it up, the amount due was zero. No one ever said anything to me about what happened. The technician I was talking with was mainly assuring me the error wouldn’t come back up. Everything was double-checked. This part they replaced was in the same circuit as the first, and they weren’t surprised something else blew. No less than a month later, I get into my car to leave, and I get the error message that it won’t start. I went the next morning to try to start it, it worked, and I drove to the service center. That was the first week of February. I am on my 3rd loaner, as the first two had issues and had to be taken in for service. During this, my service tab changed, and I couldn’t message them anymore. This time it's still a part of the ac converter, but some water erosion isn’t helping either. I was told it could happen pretty fast, too, since I was confused about how it wasn’t noticed from the month before. Now it's June, and I have heard no updates about if the part has even shipped or not. They have pushed my completion date back a month each time. I worry about future repairs at this point. Are these cars already legacy and going to be shunned by Tesla? Any advice is appreciated. Going forward, I can’t see any other path than selling and dealing with how much I have already lost/put into the car. Overall I am happy I have had a loaner each of these times, even if I had trouble with several model 3s. I love my Model S; it's my favorite car; I still look at them when one drives by and stop, but my faith in the brand is almost all gone. Just from this experience, how do I not dread that it's not dead when I get it. Not to mention the previous almost $8k I have put into the car over the past 2.5 years, I wanted to keep it going, it's Tesla’s start, and they shouldn’t just say it's obsolete but then charge you 1/5 of the car's value. Especially now that Elon tanked values after Twitter. submitted by mruniverse28 to TeslaLounge [link] [comments] |

2023.06.08 18:04 JoshAsdvgi The Pyrex Burial -or- The Bear and The Pudding
| The Pyrex Burial -or- The Bear and The Pudding A True Pine Arbor Funeral Story A few years back--but not many, a young man decided to get married, the young lady's mother had agreed and a date was chosen; they selected my friend, that ol' Sakim, to officiate over the traditional nuptial rites. The brother of this young man unfortunately died near the wedding date. In order that people wouldn't have to make two long trips-- one for a funeral and one for a wedding --the funeral was moved up a day and the wedding pushed back a day so they could occur at the same time. Naturally, that was Sakim's bright idea. Both brothers had always been close and were always part of each other's lives. The deceased brother was cremated--a family tradition and requirement because they were of the Bear clan. The ashes were in a sealed a nice brass container that looked suspiciously like a cookie cannister and placed at the opposite far end of the food table for this double wedding-funeral adventure. The container's contents were unknown to the guests at the time. North Florida is home to a very large black bear population and such bears are no stranger to some rural communities. So! It wasn't surprising nor unexpected that a bear would be in the neighborhood and decide to see what her kinsfolks, members of the Bear clan, were up to. Out of the corner of their eyes, Sakim and the groom both saw the bear come from the woods' edge as the wedding ceremony was proceeding. Sakim, who had actually raised a couple of bears from cubs, chose not to alarm folks and thus continued with the wedding. A few others saw the bear, too and figured if "it was alright with Sakim, it was alright with them, too." After all, his own father was Bear clan and both were proven "men of Power" in a spiritual sense. Besides, was it not a good omen to have a bear present at this important Bear clan event? It was not a surprising to those learned in bear lore, but the bear went straight to the food table, started eating and generally messing up things. Soon, she gobled her way to the other end of the table and managed to get the lid off the container of ashes which she promptly spilled some onto the nearby banana pudding. Now this little bit of mischief really made Sakim cringe--real homemade banana pudding is his all-time favorite food group. That bear was surely in for a whipping. Some swear they heard Sakim mutter something about getting a willow switch. Anyway, when the little brass cannister was opened, the flying ash must have startled the bear or made her uncomfortable because she sneezed violently, turned and fled back into the woods. Sakim didn't miss a beat according to Mary Johns and the groom, Greg. When the wedding portion was complete, Sakim called everyone to come and eat what was left of the intended feast. He admonished all present not to eat the banana pudding! Next came the funeral portion. In the funereal benedictions, Sakim concluded to the startled congregants, that it was good, and cost effective too, that people could be buried in pyrex or corning ware nowadays. With that remark, he promptly interred the banana pudding with the ash-urn! After the burial, all purified themselves by washing with "Grave Medicine," making a tobacco offering and going about their business as if nothing unusual had ever happened. Family and friends enjoy repeating this tale. With Sakim in tow, you never know what will happen; You only know something WILL happen...! submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |

| Predictmedix – a great way to surf the Artificial Intelligence wave. https://preview.redd.it/0dbxwl6hct4b1.jpg?width=741&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c89a7c16f1c0b16945c4267a8a4fe5b3ad44257d There is a saying attributed to Mark Twain that goes, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but if often rhymes.” This means circumstances might be different but similar events often recur. This is good because securities regulators demand that you make it clear that in the financial markets, “Past performance is no guarantee of future results.” However, investment analysts continue to use rhymes and here’s one that could help you see sizeable investment returns from Predictmedix Inc. (CSE: PMED, OTCQB: PMEDF). This is how the rhyme comes together: A. The 1990s technology boom: The parallel I see is between the current Artificial Intelligence cycle and the dot-com stock market cycle of ≈1990 to ≈ 2002. As background, the 1990s either developed or laid the groundwork for changes that completely transformed the world we live in. Out of that time came many new technologies and related developments and each was highly disruptive. Here is a very brief list of some of those developments: (1) Nokia was the first mass-produced cellphone offered in 1992 with the ability to send and receive phone calls as well as store data (e.g. phone numbers). (2) The World Wide Web, a.k.a. the Web browser was proposed in 1990 and debuted in 1991. This was the start of the Internet, Websites, e-mails and a massive amount of information that would become available to everyone. (3) With the explosion of data available, finding it became a challenge. Mosaic started as the first search engine in 1993 followed by Yahoo in 1994 and Google in 1998. Today, Google has risen to the top and become synonymous with an Internet search. Google it. (4) Other important developments of that time included the growth in the capacity of microprocessors, Photoshop, texting, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, realistic videogames for a more adult market, collecting and using DNA, the start of e-tailing and more. (5) Finally, we have the stock market. Cisco, Dell, Intel and Microsoft are sometimes referred to as the four horsemen of the 1990s tech boom. But we can’t ignore Apple and Google and there were many more that benefited. The smaller, new, Initial Public Offering companies came to the fore with incredibly high returns in the second half of the 1990s. The chart to the right shows how stock markets performed during the 1990’s high-tech boom. A few things are worth noting: (1) The Dot.Com stock market cycle lasted a long t time. Essentially, more than the decade of the 1990s. It’s length reflected the importance of the fundamental changes taking place. (2) There was an important development regarding the stock market that has become part of the stock market legend. On December 5, 1996, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan in a televised speech used the term “irrational exuberance” to describe a stock market that he thought was highly speculative and overvalued. His comment was intended as a warning from the Fed that the stock market, driven by the high-tech developments described above, was overvalued. His timing was five years early which is a lifetime in the stock market. (3) The five years after Greenspan’s “irrational exuberance” statement was the most profitable for investors of the entire ten years plus of the stock market cycle. As you sit reading this brief, imagine your life without a cell phone, the Internet, e-mail and text messages. How different would your life be without just these four products that emerged from the 1990s. A more relevant question might be how different would your life be if you had purchased shares in Apple or Cisco or Dell or Google or Microsoft back then? B. The Artificial Intelligence Boom (AI): The term Artificial Intelligence was created in 1955. The idea was to have a machine that could take data, and find patterns that would enable it to make predictions and reach conclusions (make decisions). The Oxford Dictionary defines AI as “The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.” It was Moore’s Law in 1975 that stated the capacity of semiconductors would continue to double every two years which enabled computers to be able to put into practice the AI Boom that is taking place today. Current forecasts say the AI industry will grow to $900 billion by 2026 and $15.7 trillion by 2030. AI growth in the 1920s could dwarf anything high-tech was able to accomplish in the 1990s. (1) There is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) boom going on and many people don’t yet realize it is even happening. AI is used in: i. Self-driving and parking cars. AI is used by Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Toyota and Volvo. ii. Maps and navigation. Enter where you are and where you want to go by car and Google Maps, for example, will give you a choice of routes, the time optimal route taking into account construction and traffic. iii. Facial detection or recognition. Facial detection identifies a human face or facial recognition that identifies a specific face that can be used for surveillance and security. iv. Digital assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, Google’s Now and Microsoft’s Cortana. When combined with search and recommendation AI, Alexa or Siri is able to learn your preferences and recommend things you are interested in. v. Customer service chatbots that answer frequently asked questions, track orders or direct calls. Often people will be unaware they are dealing with a machine. vi. Vehicle recognition use computer vision and deep learning to find a specific car on a surveillance video. vii. Robot vacuums can scan a living area, look for and remember objects in the way, remember the best route for cleaning the area and decide how many times it should repeat cleaning a specific area. It is estimated that by 2030, between 400 and 800 million jobs will be displaced by Artificial Intelligence and 375 million people will have to change to a totally different type of work. It is also forecast that it is not just lower-paying, blue-collar jobs that will be replaced by AI. Jobs such as accountants, lawyers, doctors, investment advisors and portfolio managers might all be substantially eliminated. AI will impact all industries and the rate of change will be exponential, that is, the rate of change will accelerate. For example, what does a doctor do? In general, a doctor gathers new information, refers to a patient’s medical history, refers to a medical book or today’s Internet, makes a diagnosis and provides s treatment. This is also what a lawyer does. AI might reach the point where it can do it faster and better than a human.. AI does present threats to human existence. As AI is changing exponentially, it will happen faster than the technology boom of the 1990s. It took technology 20 years to produce the changes we discussed above. AI could produce equivalent changes in 10 or 15 years. For example, ChatGPT, an AI product went from zero to 100 million users within months making it the fastest-growing consumer software product in history. There will be others. (2) The AI shift could drive economic change and a stock market cycle at least as significant as the last “dot.com” cycle. The “go-to” companies today for participation in AI are the likes of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Meta (NASDAQ: META), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL). These are very large companies. GOOGL has a market cap of $1.6 trillion, AMZN has a market cap of $1.2 trillion, META has a market cap of $$648 billion, MSFT has a market cap of $2.4 trillion, NCDA has a market cap of $963 billion and ORCL has a market cap of $282 billion. (3) While these are excellent businesses, they are also amongst the world’s largest companies. In 2022, GOOGL, META and MSFT purchased 2 out of every 3 AI chips. In my opinion, it is almost unthinkable that GOOGL can be a ten-bagger from a base market cap of $1.6 trillion or AMZN from $1.2 trillion. But it is clear these stocks now have a major component of their value derived from involvement in Artificial Intelligence and it is not surprising that early adopters would choose a lower risk/lower return approach to gain exposure to an emerging Artificial Intelligence industry. (4) The changes created by AI also carry some risks. The speed of change will be challenging to human beings. There are forecasts that say one in four workers globally will see their jobs disappear and one in eight workers will have to be retrained in a totally unrelated field. During the industrial revolution and the tech boom, there was always the promise of more and better jobs. With AI we may have reached the point where machines actually do replace workers. (5) Cathie Wood is a well-known and widely followed money manager with a reputation for expertise in the Artificial Intelligence sector. Wood manages a range of portfolios including the ARK Innovation Exchange Traded Fund (ARKK) and since its founding in 2014, Bloomberg estimates NDVA has contributed 13% of the fund’s 112% total return only behind Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, Invitae Corp and Tesla. That is all positive but Wood sold the ARKK holding in NVDA in January 2023 just before it rallied strongly adding some $560 billion to its market cap with $200 billion coming on one day after reporting earnings. Wood’s investors have basically missed the huge rally in the stock and the sector in 2023. (6) But there is another phase I would look for and that is the participation of smaller, retail investors. Whether it was in the tech cycle I discussed above, the “meme” stocks or commodity exploration and development cycles in the past, the retail investor buys in before the bull market ends. Market pundits such as Citi global asset allocation and Vanda Research make the same observation: where is the retail investor? We know the institutional investors have been getting in. So far in 2023 according to Bloomberg, the top 4% of stocks in the S&P 500 have contributed 94% of the index return and 8 of the top 20 include Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet Class A, NVIDIA, Alphabet Class C, Tesla and Meta. In other words, the top 2% of the stocks in the S&P 500 contributed 94% of the return. Through mid-May, if the AI stocks are omitted, the S&P Index would be down -1.4% instead of up +8.3%. All of these stocks are AI leaders and each of them is an institutional stock. Yet, I believe the retail investor will come into the market and when they do, it is stocks like PMED for which they have always had an appetite. C. I think investors will get more bang for their buck by investing in a small company like Predictmedix Inc. (CSE: PMED, OTCQB: PMEDF) with a total commitment to AI. From a base market cap of $16.6 million and, as I have pointed out in recent reports, many different business verticals to get them higher, I see PMED as a unique opportunity for aggressive growth investors. It is hard to imagine any decade having more of an impact on the ensuring socio-economic decades than the 1990s. Imagine your activities today without your cellphone, Internet, email and texting. I expect the cycle driven by AI to be a long one, similar to the dot-com cycle that lasted longer than the decade of the 1990s. To the right is a chart published by Luke Lango’s Hypergrowth Investing. It shows the stock market in the 1990s and overlays current results. The parallels Lango sees include: • Federal Reserve’s tight money policy slowed economic growth in 1990 as it is doing currently. • In 1990, the markets were down around 20% and in 2022 stocks dropped around 25%. • In late 1990, the Fed started reducing interest rates and the markets rebounded. • In late 2022, the Fed has turned less hawkish and into 2023 has slowed the pace of interest rate increases. The markets have been recovering. • In the early 1990’s, the dot-com stock market rally began and the market would advance generally higher for the rest of the decade and into the new millennium. • Today, it is Artificial Intelligence that is pushing stocks higher and given my expectations for AI, it could stock prices higher until at least 2030. Conclusion: I believe Predictmedix Inc. (CSE: PMED, OTCQB: PMEDF) is exceptionally well positioned to participate in the upcoming boom in Artificial Intelligence. There are many different ways to describe market cycles that evolve around such drivers. Here is mine: - Accumulation: the earliest buyers tend to be larger institutions that gain the information necessary to be early adopter. I have given several statistics to show this has been happening.
- Retail Participation/Speculation: as the story gains acceptance, less experienced investors enter the market and prices begin to rise more quickly. After two to three years of combined buying by large and small investors, it is possible to identify speculative activities such as very rapid increases in a stock price or underwritings of companies based on questionable valuations. This is the next phase I see ahead for the current AI cycle.
- Distribution/Sale: At some point, toward the end of the Retail Participation/Speculation phase, some investors will begin to sell. It is popular to believe that institutional investors or “smart money” sell at this stage. During the many years, I have spent in the investment business, this is not true. Institutions can hold on to their AI stocks for far too long and end up seeing their portfolios incinerated. This is still many years away. The challenge today with a stock like PMED is not getting out; it is getting in.
- Bear Market: eventually there will be a broad sell-off of AI stocks. Some institutions will sell without regard for their impact on the market. Margin buyers will get margin calls and may be forced to sell again without regard to price. At this time, over half of the AI companies trading at that time will simply disappear. Some will be successful but remain smaller. Some will merge with another AI company. Some will be acquired. Very few will survive and become leaders in the industries. They will become the Alphabets, Amazons, Metas, Microsofts, Nvidias, and Oracles of the 2040s and 2050s.
I started out with the quote “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” So I don’t think the AI cycle of the 2020s will be the same as the high-tech cycle of the 1990s but I think it will be similar. If you agree, Predictmedix Inc. (CSE: PMED, OTCQB: PMEDF) is a stock to buy for your portfolio. submitted by GoStockGo to Wealthsimple_Penny [link] [comments] |

2023.06.08 14:27 Longjumping_Cost_322 Detroit: Become Human Might Be the ONLY Game I Actually Play Through Again
I started playing this again (2nd playthrough) last night while trying to relax. The interaction between Kara and the little girl's abusive father (he still got taken out) went about the same, but I played Markus and Connor differently. I didn't allow Markus to get mad and push Leo (self-restraint) this time when he provoked him. Unfortunately, Carl randomly had a heart attack and died immediately, leaving poor Markus in literal tears, crying, "Dad! Please don't leave me!"
I played Connor as the most "human," caring, and empathetic one in the bunch last time. This time, he doesn't give a crap. He lies to people to complete his mission and has zero problems with casualties. He's like, "Oh well" and steps over or around bodies.
When people ask him, "How could you lie to me?" or "Why did you turn me in or dime me out?" he says, "I'm programmed to complete my mission" and gives a blank stare or walks off. Lol.
It looks like Markus is going to be the most human one this time.

2023.06.08 14:13 Hour-Half1125 2D horror game about escaping a tunnel!
So I had this wierd dream I really wanted to turn into a game but I have zero game development experience so I'm giving it away in hopes someone likes it.
The style of the game is Similar to Oxenfree where it's more of a 2D platformer with some 3D elements.
So this game starts out with you working in a giant mine. I'm talking the size and width of a football field but the tunnel goes on for Miles and miles with thousands of various tunnels branching off of it. Dozens of little roads and walkways on either side of the tunnel for workers or for equipment to drive through to reach their destination and groups of people splitting off into their assigned tunnel.
You start your day working in a smaller tunnel with just a crew of 5 people. These are guys you went to highschool with and know pretty well. You guys make you're way down a labyrinth of stairs and walkways to your dig site. You're digging in the tunnel when all of a sudden the floor falls out from underneath the guys up front. 3 guys fall in the pit. They fall about 30 ft down, all the lights go out and it's pitch black darkness. You scramble to light flares and grab a rope, tie it off to one of the supports, and scale the rope down into the pit, tie it around one of your friends waist, climb back up and start pulling them out. You pull out the first guy, drag him into the main tunnel and up a walkway to a room higher up. It's this little break room, but not much of one. It's like they just dug out the tunnel into a square shape and placed around a few chairs. You get the first guy back, other than some scratches he's pretty much ok so I run like a bat out of hell back to your tunnel and do it again. This time you grab your best friend Scott. You pull him up and take him back to the break room but he's having a heart attack. You and a few other workers take care of him until he's ok. You breathe a sigh of relief before running back to the tunnel for the last guy.
As you're running all the other workers are leaving their tunnels and making their way to the service elevators to go back to the surface. But you've still got one guy down there. You scramble down the rope to find the last guy. His heads caved in and he's completely cold. There's nothing you can do. You climb my way back out as the last flares are fading and make my way to the main tunnel. As you walk through the dark corridor you hear a whisper. "The sirens will save us".... You reach the main tunnel, It's pitch black and everyone has left. The only lights you see are the dim red lights of the machines like red eyes in the distance and a strange feint blue one you've never seen before as well as you hear a feint low hum that I can't identify.
You can barely see the machines and pipes in front of your face and for some odd reason you get this feeling like you're being watched. Like something could come out of the hundreds of tunnels at any time, but you push forward. You gotta make it back to the elevator past the break room and make my way back up to the surface before everyone leaves.
You feel your way through the dark ducking under pipes and stumbling over machines and into the break room that's only lit by a single red emergency light. Everyone really has left. No one waited for you. The elevator is shut down. You say to yourself "think think think! I remember seeing signs around the workplace. In case of power outage follow the sirens down the main tunnel to the mines entrance" this tunnel is miles long...... Pitch black. It's going to take forever but I don't really have a choice.
So you start walking. As you make your way back down to the main tunnel you start walking closer and closer to the blue light and as you do the hum grows louder. You suddenly realize that's it. A barely operational siren just emanating the lowest hum it can spit out. "That's how I'll find my way out." You say. You see another blue light miles in the distance, it's all you've got. So you start marching forward. The workers paths seem to zig zag up and down back and forth from the various smaller tunnels so you keep getting lost. You can see the light I just don't know how to get to it. The entire time you keep hearing these whispers like they're coming from the tunnels. "The sirens will save us"
Here you could try and implement some puzzles to the game.
As you're walking you can hear the hum getting stronger, but the path suddenly comes to a stop, there's a service bridge from a previous tunnel collapse. It's the only way to get large equipment across the gap, but the bridge is currently up. You have to find your way to the foreman's office to lower it. You make my way up the winding path to find a small shack hundreds of feet up in the air that oversees most of the tunnel. You make my way inside. Turn on the bridges power and hit the button to lower it. Thank God something still works. The steel bridge squeaks and squeals as it begins lowering, but just then you look down at the foreman's desk. There's a news letter. The mine is scheduled to close today as there's been too many accidents. At first you're angry. You just found out I'd lost my job and nobody had the heart to tell you. But then you freeze. If it's scheduled to close that means they'll be capping off the main entrance. If you stay here any longer this mine will be your tomb.
You grab the foreman's head lamp on your way out and start running. Finally the bridge fully lowers coming down with a loud SLAM! With that you hear a loud scream come from deep within the mine. Whatever's been watching you heard the bridge.... You start running faster and faster, ducking under pipes, tripping over equipment and suddenly hit your head. You lose the headlamp but keep running and crawling through the dark.... You made it to the next siren. All is quiet except for the low drone. You stop to breathe and feel a sense of safety under it's soft blue light. You look further down the tunnel to the next siren. But you can't see the light. It's pitch black. The lights gone out but it has to be out there. You just have to listen for it
You leave the safety of your little blue light. Everything goes quiet. You're walking aimlessly through the dark praying I hear the next siren to guide you. All you can hear are those repeated whispers. The sirens will save us... The sirens will save us.... Que in more puzzles As you keep going you can't seem to see it but you can make out a feint hum. Finally, something to judge your distance. As it grows louder you can tell you're getting closer. You keep crawling your way feeling my way through the dark when I come across a little girl. She has this wierd glow to her and you can tell she's crying. You ask her what's wrong and through her tears she says is "I can't hear the sirens anymore". You turn in the direction of the hum and say "it's just a little further, come on" but when you turn back she's gone.
I also figured as you're walking you'd find notes to previous tunnel collapses or accidents in the mine. Missing person signs, or shrines to workers lost to the tunnel. Maybe some tunnels that just loop you back around so you feel really lost.
Que more puzzles!!!!
You keep going further and further. You can finally see the entrance. Daylight! You start running. You hear your friends outside cheering! You're finally going to make it out!!!!! Then boom! The tunnel collapsed. They weren't cheering for you. They were cheering for the mines closure. They never even saw you. There's no more light. No more sound. No way out. Not even the drone of the siren. Suddenly you can hear hundreds of whispers all around you. The sirens will save us, then it all fades to black.
Alternate endings. 1. As you're making your way out you look in the mirror and find your head caved in before it switches back to you. You later find out that last person in the pit was you. You died and the light at the end of the tunnel was metaphorically the light at the end of the tunnel.
TLDR: horror game based around trying to escape an abandoned mine before it collapses.

2023.06.08 13:53 JoanChud The Passenger (Cormac McCarthy)
His father spoke little to them of Trinity. Mostly he’d read it in the
literature. Lying face down in the bunker. Their voices low in the darkness.
Two. One. Zero. Then the sudden whited meridian. Out there the rocks
dissolving into a slag that pooled over the melting sands of the desert. Small
creatures crouched aghast in that sudden and unholy day and then were no
more. What appeared to be some vast violetcolored creature rising up out of
the earth where it had thought to sleep its deathless sleep and wait its hour
of hours.
It was his father who took her to see all those doctors. Who sat at the
kitchen table in the old farmhouse and stared out across the fields to the
creek and the woods beyond. He’d written in a notebook things she had said
that he could not understand and he read them over and read them over until
in the end perhaps he came to realize that her illness—as he called it—was
less a condition than a message. He’d turned more than once to see her in
the doorway watching him. Fräulein Gottestochter bearing gifts of which
she herself would at last be no advocate.
His father. Who had created out of the absolute dust of the earth an evil
sun by whose light men saw like some hideous adumbration of their own
ends through cloth and flesh the bones in one another’s bodies.
He’d looked for his father’s grave in the ratlands of northern Mexico but
he never found it. Talking in his bad Spanish with officials in soiled shirts
who watched him wordlessly and did not even pretend to think him sane.
On the streets of Knoxville he met someone from his childhood who asked
with no apparent malice if he thought that his father was in hell. No, he
said. Not anymore.
He’d sit sometimes in the little church at San Javier. The long quiet
afternoons. The women in their black shawls would try their best not to
steal a look at him. A stone font with stone infants. The cheap boards
behind the altar had been painted gold and the plastered walls of the church
were painted with flowers which were visited by mothlike creatures,
drifting through the paneled light, one, the next. He’d thought at first they
might be hummingbirds but then he remembered that there were no old
world species of them. He lit a candle and dropped a peseta into the tin box.
He walked out along the headlands. In the distance the thunder rolled
across the dark horizon with a sound like boxes falling. Unusual weather.
Lightning thin and quick. The inland sea. Cradle of the west. A frail candle
tottering in the darkness. All of history a rehearsal for its own extinction.
In the morning there was a spider on his blanket. Its sesame eyes. He
blew at it and it scuttled away. Some dream of his father. Later in the day he
remembered. A wasted figure shuffling along the corridor of the shabby
clinic. Pushing a wheeled stand before him with his tubes and vials. Days
perhaps from death and a nameless burial in the hard caliche of a potter’s
field in a foreign land. Who stopped and turned with his watery eyes. Paper
slippers and a stained white gown. Where is my son? Why doesnt he come?

MAY 7, 2023~World’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer begins producing hydrogen~ World’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer begins producing hydrogen (hydrogentechworld.com) Bloom Energy has begun generating hydrogen from the world’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer installation at NASA’s Ames Research Center. This high-temperature unit produces 20–25% more hydrogen per MW than commercially demonstrated lower-temperature electrolyzers such as PEM or alkaline https://preview.redd.it/r9j9ub5zur4b1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=8de4ed62233ef7c13a523b704dc0d2708068d3f2 This electrolyzer demonstration showcases the maturity, efficiency and commercial readiness of Bloom’s solid oxide technology for large-scale, clean hydrogen production. The 4 MW Bloom Electrolyzer™, delivering the equivalent of over 2.4 tonnes per day of hydrogen output, was built, installed and operationalized in a span of two months to demonstrate the speed and ease of deployment. “This demonstration is a major milestone for reaching net-zero goals,” said KR Sridhar, Ph.D., Founder, Chairman and CEO of Bloom Energy. “Hydrogen will be essential for storing intermittent and curtailed energy and for decarbonizing industrial energy use. Commercially viable electrolyzers are the key to unlocking the energy storage puzzle, and solid oxide electrolyzers offer inherently superior technology and economic advantages. Bloom Energy, as the global leader in solid oxide technology, is proud to share this exciting demonstration with the world: our product is ready for prime time.” The current demonstration expands on Bloom’s recent project on a 100 kW system located at the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL), which achieved record-breaking electrolyzer efficiency. In the ongoing project, 4,500 hours of full load operations have been completed with a Bloom Electrolyzer™, producing hydrogen more efficiently than any other process – over 25% more efficiently than low-temperature electrolysis. The INL steam and load simulations replicated nuclear power conditions to validate full capability of technology application at nuclear facilities, and the pilot results revealed the Bloom Electrolyzer producing hydrogen at 37.7 kWh per kg of hydrogen. Dynamic testing conducted at INL included ramping down the system from 100 percent of rated power to 5 percent in less than 10 minutes without adverse system impacts. Even at 5 percent of rated load, the energy efficiency (kWh/kg) was as good or better than other electrolyzer technologies at their 100% rated capacity. These results will be presented at the Department of Energy’s Annual Review Meeting in Washington DC on 7 June 2023. Dr. Ravi Prasher, CTO of Bloom Energy, said: “The amount of electricity needed by the electrolyzer to make hydrogen will be the most dominant factor in determining hydrogen production cost. For this reason, the efficiency of the electrolyzer, the electricity needed to produce a kilogram of hydrogen becomes the most critical figure of merit. This 4 MW demonstration at the NASA Ames Research Center proves that the energy efficiency of our large-scale electrolyzer is similar to the small-scale system tested at INL highlighting the strength of our modular architecture. The electrolyzer product is leveraging the Bloom platform knowhow of more than 1 GW of solid oxide fuel cells deployed in the field and providing approximately 1 trillion cumulative cell operating hours. The same technology platform that can convert natural gas and hydrogen to electricity can be used reversibly to convert electricity to hydrogen. With Bloom’s high-efficiency, high-temperature solid oxide electrolyzers, we are one step closer to a decarbonized future powered by low-cost clean hydrogen.” April 5, 2022 ~Scandium emerges from the shadows~ https://preview.redd.it/r50wjw0vvr4b1.png?width=343&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2a2670c3411f9f5f915be5856236c16c3e938ad Scandium has long been considered an “if” metal. If only it were available in quantity, it could transform aircraft production and fuel consumption. If only it were available in quantity, it could speed the emerging hydrogen economy. If only it were available in quantity, it could accelerate the rollout of 5G technologies. And so on. The view has been that scandium could be used in numerous large-volume applications, if only supplies were sufficient to meet the potential demand. Manufacturers regularly cited a lack of sufficient scandium supply as the reason why they did not roll out new uses and products containing scandium. After a near-mythic role in the 1980s (as a strengthening agent in aluminium alloys deployed in the last generation of Soviet MiG fighter aircraft and even, reputedly, in ballistic missile nosecones), scandium entered the banal in the 1990s, in sporting goods and, bizarrely, hand guns. Bloom Energy turned the tide starting around 2010, with its introduction of fuel cells based on scandium-stabilised zirconia ceramic electrolytes. Bloom has grown rapidly and now represents perhaps 80% of the world’s annual consumption of SCANDIUM, a paltry 25t or so of oxide in 2021. And yet, despite these rickety foundations, SCANDIUM consumption is poised to grow dramatically in the next decade, buoyed by new sources of supply and sustained by demand-side innovation. The supply side Let’s start with supply. Until about 2018, most scandium was supplied as a by-product in China and Russia, from uranium and titanium processing. Since then, however, much has changed. First, Sumitomo Metal Mining built and has now commissioned a scandium recovery circuit at its Tagano Bay nickel high pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant in the Philippines. This plant recovers scandium oxalate for processing into oxide (and probably into scandium-zirconium oxide particles destined for Bloom Energy) in Japan. The plant recovers 7-8tpy of scandium oxide and when commissioned increased global supply by around 40%. Capital costs were perhaps US$5M/t of scandium oxide. Second, the Chinese integrated titanium producer Lomon Billions has established a 20-30tpy scandium oxide facility with the potential to increase to 50tpy. The company estimates up to 100tpy of scandium oxide are available in its titanium plants using the sulphate process. Third, in 2021, Rio Tinto commenced scandium recovery from its Sorel Tracy plant in Québec, Canada. The pilot plant can supply 3tpy of scandium oxide and cost US$6M. The site has the ability to supply an estimated 50-60tpy of oxide based on current raw material feed. Finally, UC Rusal has both commissioned a 3tpy pilot scandium oxide plant, recovering scandium oxide from red mud deposits, and also commenced marketing and selling a range of scandium alloys (branded “ScAlution” alloys) that boast enhanced performance at low (typically 0.1%) concentrations of scandium. Plus, it is not only Rusal that has pioneered low-scandium alloys. In the USA, Eck Industries, a specialist aluminium casting house, is commercialising cerium-based alloys in which scandium, again at low loadings, could provide additional strength as well as much reduced post-cast processing requirements. Looking further out, there are numerous scandium projects in development, many of which should come into production around the middle of the decade, thanks to two parallel forces. The main driver for scandium, as for so many minor metals, is vehicle electrification. There are multiple operating and development projects utilising HPAL technology to recover and separate nickel and cobalt in laterite deposits, many of which can in principle recover scandium. While the moral of Tagano Bay is that for existing plants retrofitting can be costly and low yield, there are emerging projects in Australia that are designing scandium recovery into their circuits alongside nickel and cobalt. The potential output of scandium can range from 50-100tpy or more, depending on the project. The second driver is the heightened concerns over supply chain security for critical metals. In the EU this has led to the “ScaVanger” programme to recover scandium from titanium waste streams. In the USA, red mud scandium recovery as well as by-product scandium stand to benefit. The demand side The demand side is a little more complicated but nonetheless extremely positive. Bloom’s power generation business continues to grow and has surely been reinforced by severe power disruptions in the past three years in California and Texas. Moreover, Bloom has now received initial approvals for maritime power generation (IMO regulations are forcing seagoing vessels to reduce dramatically their sulphur emissions, and Bloom can facilitate this change), and Bloom is also developing its technology to run in reverse, so to speak, as a generator of hydrogen. Critically, Bloom in the past five years has managed to bring its system costs and performance under control, removing any technology-related going-concern issues. Scandium is also a strong candidate for RF antennas able to support 5G frequencies. A typical high-end cell phone may require 100 RF filters, and in the 5G frequency range, scandium aluminium nitride is being used as the active material in these filters (called “bulk acoustic wave,” or “BAW” filters). Aerospace is a third area of application, and while commercial aviation likely remains years away from broad use of scandium alloys, near-term use in space and autonomous aircraft is an avenue for strong potential growth of scandium alloys. The cost to place 1kg in orbit has dropped dramatically but is still of the order of US$1,000/kg, so any system weight reductions can be extremely valuable. Electric vehicles (EVs) also offer the potential for large volumes of scandium demand. Weight reduction is the obvious reason. Lux Research has estimated a 1kg weight saving in an EV will be worth US$5 in 2030. But a second consideration is overall product cost. Scandium can reduce or potentially even eliminate the need for post-casting heat treatments, which can in some instances double the cost of an as-cast part. Thus the savings from the use of scandium alloys, especially at low scandium loadings, can be large. In addition, as EVs shift to heat pumps in their HVAC systems, scandium can support the implementation of aluminium radiators without adding substantial system volume (as discussed by CM Group in its 2018 scandium report). Naturally, there are other opportunities for scandium. Achieving a robust aluminium alloy able to perform at 300°C could displace large amounts of titanium, and Eck’s alloys are closing in on this goal. Maritime applications, especially in the military arena but also in autonomous vessels and ferries, could embrace scandium thanks to its greatly enhanced anti-corrosion impact in aluminium. Passenger jets are also a market that is likely to happen at some point. Most important, perhaps, is the fact that well financed firms have entered the market and are able to supply up to about 100tpy each. Supply at this level is all-but-certain to create demand, and in turn this should stimulate new supply. Scandium’s chicken-and-egg problem, in which lack of supply held back demand that in turn held back supply, has been reversed, with growing (and reliable) supply poised to stimulate actual demand, that in turn will pull through new supply, and transform scandium from “if” to “when”. JANUARY 2023 National Defense Act Calls out NIOBIUM & TITANIUM & SCANDIUM & the need to establish a U.S. Industrial Base for the Supply & Processing of ALL! https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20220711/CRPT-117hrpt397.pd SCANDIUM PAGE # 246 Briefing on the Establishment of Domestic Scandium Processing Facilities in the United States The committee believes the United States industrial base for the supply and processing of the critical mineral scandium has significant vulnerabilities. The committee also believes that the United States should seek to eliminate dependence on Chinese and Russian sources of scandium, with support from allies and partners. Accordingly, public and private sectors should cooperate closely to establish scandium processing facilities in the United States. Therefore, the committee directs the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretary of Commerce, to provide a briefing to the House Committee on Armed Services not later than May 1, 2023, on public and private sector activities, working with allied nations, to establish scandium processing facilities in the United States, especially facilities based on more efficient, cleaner, and less energy intensive technologies. This briefing will also include how these processing facilities will help the United States reduce dependence on and compete more effectively with China and Russia. MAY 2023 ~Exploring global supply and demand of scandium oxide in 2030 ~ (NIOCORP is Mentioned!) https://preview.redd.it/lokhkunrzr4b1.png?width=174&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4f4c27d6227cfe5eb054751a217d712fe2f0e81 Incorporation of scandium in materials has environmental benefits across multiple industrial sectors, particularly in decarbonization of energy. One pathway to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions is to generate electricity using hydrogen or synthetic liquid fuels, which are more efficient than combustion engines and easily used in co-generation of electricity and heat (IEA, 2019). The functional technology is a fuel cell. A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) produces electricity by oxidizing an energy carrier. The standard SOFCs produced by Bloom Energy are refrigerator-sized and input liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons (methane or biogas) to produce 100 kW of power. These cells process natural gas, biogas, or hydrogen to generate electricity with higher efficiency; up to two times higher compared to a gas-fired power station with efficiency of only 33–48% (Deepika et al., 2018). They are typically used to produce electricity and heat on-site for large buildings (Bloom Energy, 2021a). Currently, SOFC producers (e.g., Bloom Energy) utilize yttrium-stabilized zirconia and a scandia-stabilized zirconia in electrolytes; however, there are benefits of utilizing scandium over yttrium. Use of scandia-stabilized zirconia increases electro-conductivity and decreases operation temperature, resulting in higher efficiency and reliability (Deepika et al., 2018; Laguna-Bercero et al., 2009). Spurred by carbon reduction and global renewable energy initiatives, Bloom Energy is expanding its partnership worldwide (Bloom Energy, 2020, 2021b), resulting in increased demand in the SOFC market and scandium oxide required to produce SOFC boxes (Weinstein et al., 2018). Scandium also has potential for light-weighting (alloys), which is important for improving fuel economy as it requires less energy to transport lighter materials. Currently, transportation contributes 27% to total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and 14% globally (EPA, 2022; IEA, 2022b). The Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards require vehicle manufacturers to continuously increase fuel efficiency (NHTSA, 2022). One approach is through light-weighting by replacing conventional aluminum alloy parts in vehicles with scandium alloys, potentially reducing 10% of vehicle mass and thus 6–8% of emissions (Joost, 2012). Given that the United States passenger vehicle emissions were 3.2 gigatonnes in 2020, this would translate to 0.2–0.3 gigatonnes of reduction (IEA, 2022a). In the United States, the Build Back Better agenda mandates 50% of new vehicles in 2030 must be EVs (The White House, 2021). To push emission reductions further than electric vehicle adoption, light-weighting should be considered. If legislation mandated regulation like Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards for EVs, there will be further reductions in energy demand. Lighter scandium alloys serve to reduce energy demand from transportation, which directly aids to mitigate climate change induced by automobiles. Another example of light-weighting is for commercial airplanes. The bionic partition structure is a wall partition between crew members and passengers, which also serves as an emergency stretcher and foldable seating for crew members (Airbus, 2016). Current commercial airplane's partition structures are bulky and heavy, weighing approximately 63 kg (Lau, 2016). Airbus and AutoDesk collaborated and successfully produced a 30 kg bionic partition structure using Scalmalloy®, a proprietary aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy (APWORKS GmbH, 2015; Rhodes, 2015). Replacement of 4 conventional partition structures per A320 plane in commercial aircraft with Scalmalloy® structures could save up to 465,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year (Airbus, 2016). Despite scandium's potential role in meeting future sustainability goals, historically and currently, scandium is under-utilized because of its low supply and high cost due to its nature as a by-product. Prices of scandium oxide ranged from $3,800–5,000 per kg from 2013 to 2020 (Gambogi, 2017, 2020, 2021), placing scandium among the most expensive elements in production. High prices and low supply are due in part to its production as a co-product - production is dependent on the demand of other primary metals it is mined with. For example, when there is an increase in scandium demand and price, supply does not respond instantaneously because producers need to increase production of the primary products. This leads to price volatility. Scandium oxide is produced as a co-product due to its sparse concentration in ore, which makes it uneconomical to mine alone. It has been extracted as a co-product with iron ore, other rare earths, titanium, and zirconium in China; uranium in Kazakhstan and Ukraine; apatite (phosphorus) and uranium in Russia; and nickel in the Philippines (Gambogi, 2021). The global production of scandium oxide was 14–23 tonnes (15–25 tons) per year in 2020 (Gambogi, 2021), which was small in comparison to 220,000 tonnes (240,000 tons) of global rare earths oxide per year (Cordier, 2022) and 68 million tonnes (75 million tons) of aluminum per year (Lee Bray, 2022). Scandium appears to continue as a co-product in the future, for the most part. Mining companies expect scandium to be a minor co-product from mining other metals such as nickel, cobalt, titanium, niobium, etc. (Clean TeQ Holdings Limited, 2018; NioCorp Superalloy Materials, 2019; Platina Resource Limited, 2021; Wang et al., 2020). There is one exception in New South Wales, Australia by Scandium International Mining Corporation, whose primary product is scandium oxide (Scandium International Mining Corp, 2020). For consumption, SOFCs by Bloom Energy are the main scandium oxide consumer with 74% of total global consumption (CM Group, 2018). A typical Bloom Energy server box of 100 MW contains 13–15 kg of scandium oxide and costs $700,000–800,000 in 2010 (Ecclestone, 2020; Jenkins, 2010). Before subsidies, Bloom Energy servers cost approximately $0.14 per kilowatt-hour of electricity compared to $0.10 per kilowatt-hour of retail power price on the U.S. national grid (Helman, 2020). Although sufficient and reliable supply play an important role in other sectors (e.g., SOFCs, commercial aerospace), price is crucial in adoption in other sectors (e.g., sporting goods, beverage cans). 2023.06.08 10:12 paco_o_chang TIFU by using a life hack. I saved like 5 bucks but lost a whole day.
So I’ll start by saying that I live in Japan where the garbage disposal rules are strict, but full of loopholes. One of which I’ve exploited multiple times.
Futon disposal. Normally you would buy a sticker from the convenience store for a designated amount, call the city to tell them what you are disposing, and finally set it out neatly wrapped up for them to collect it on a designated date and time.
Or… you can do what I’ve done the many times I moved and cut the futon up into pieces which can fit in garbage bags and just throw them out like that. The bags themselves only cost a few hundred yen, so even if I used them all I would still save like 500¥ ($5ish).
The first time I did this it took quite some time because I had already packed away the best tools for the job (heavy-duty scissors). But the other times were quick and efficient, so it really was worth the time and effort to save that extra money.
So, fast forward to April this year when I got transferred (a natural and common occurrence in Japanese life. Side note, you haven’t really lived in Japan until you’ve gotten transferred or accidentally walked into the adult section of a Don Quixote) and I’m preparing to use my “life hack” to once again save a few bucks. I was giddy just thinking about what I could spend the extra cash on, possibly a few turns of the Chainsaw Man gatcha gatcha machine?
I was actually carving up TWO futons this day. You see, the apartment was listed as pre-furnished, which fit my transferee lifestyle well, but in my experience they don’t usually come with futons. So before moving in I had one set to be delivered that day. To my surprise, they already had one for me! It was nice for the time I was living there, but now I had twice the work. Oh well, I have my system all set in place, this won’t be any trouble, right?
Oh boy was I wrong. The first futon, the one I bought, went down fine. I cut the fabric, sliced through the seams, and finally the only thing left to do was rip up the foam. Same as I’ve done several times before. Broke a small sweat, but I had plenty of energy to do that again. So far, there have been zero fuck ups. So I crack my knuckles, grab my heavy-duty scissors, guide them to the edge of the futon and I make my first incision.
There was zero resistance. “Nice,” I ignorantly thought to myself. I make a second incision and now… I have massively fucked up. For anyone who has accidentally cut into a down futon, here’s some advice that I wish I had been told prior to this moment; Don’t Panic!
As feathers careened out of the futon I pushed down on the incision. More feathers flew out. I grabbed a handful of feathers and tried desperately to shove them back in. More feathers flew out. So I stopped and let go of everything. Feathers continued to pour out like a waterfall. My whole apartment, and by extension everything still unpacked, was now covered in feathers.
You know how in movies people might get shot and go flying? Or jump from a ten story building into the dumpster and come out unscathed? All of that is now waaaaay more believable to me than anyone having fun in a pillow fight with down pillows. I lost an entire day cleaning that up. I dot know how many feathers were required to make that futon, but if someone told me it was in the millions, I would believe them.
So now I have an amendment to my life hack; To avoid having to pay for your futon to be disposed of in Japan, you can cut it up into pieces which can fit in garbage bags and throw them away as usual… UNLESS it’s a down futon! Just follow the guidelines your municipality has.
TL;DR In an attempt to save money in disposal fees, I cut open down futon, which resulted in my entire apartment being covered in feathers.

2023.06.08 07:15 DJ4N6O I made love to a goddess named Aya
This piece recounts the first time I drank an ancient plant medicine called Ayahuasca. It comes from Amazonian tribes who consider it a sacred plant medicine with healing powers and, given what a hugely beneficial impact it has had on my life, I am very comfortable describing it as medicine.
One Saturday, in the spring of 2016 I was greeted by the medicine man himself with a big hug, let’s call him Blu. I came into his kitchen to be greeted by several women with slightly comical homemade, feather headdresses and couldn’t help but think I’d walked into a kid’s birthday party. In the garden, there was a small festival tent set up which had a hay bale altar with easter decorations.
The ceremony had around 30 other participants and 10 shamans. In the middle of the tent stood the medicine man’s wife, Sun who was very much the master of the ceremony. She had the most daring headdress, flowing orange robes and a rattle in her hand. She spoke to us with warm, friendly humour telling us that we would know the medicine had kicked in once her singing started to sound good!
She advised that each experience is unique and we should try not to have huge expectations, sometimes nothing at all happens the first time. Having waited five years for this day I was quietly confident that this would not be the case for me and boy was I right!
We went around the circle introducing ourselves and explained what we were hoping to get out of the ceremony. Focusing on your intent during a psychedelic experience is meant to help you get what you are looking for.
During my turn, I expressed my desire to regain my self-confidence and passion for the opportunities and women in my life to whom I never seem to be able to fully commit.
Once we had all shared, we learned that it was time to drink.
My heart was filled with profound forbearing and excitement as I went up to receive a small glass of harsh-tasting, brown liquid which certainly tasted like medicine!
I had a basic camping mattress and a duvet laid out for me which I snuggled into before pulling on my eye mask. I was on my back trying not to think too much about the medicine, whether it was working or maybe wouldn’t work while I meditated for an hour.
The shamans started singing and shaking rattles. One of the female shamans, Nubia had an incredibly beautiful soprano voice that stood out from the others. It was while listening to the song of the shamans that I started to feel a warm flow of energy along my limbs. I tried to dismiss it at first, thinking it might somehow be related to my fasting for 40 hours prior.
When I moved my eye mask to let some light into my eyes I saw the tent roof overlaid with a flowing grid of beautiful, metallic, geometric grids with multi-coloured light flowing through the lines. The Individual elements of the grid reflected every colour of the rainbow like oil on water’s surface and I started to feel joyful, like a child rolling through leaves on a warm autumn day.
Nubia started singing to us again and it was like nothing I’d ever heard. It was so beautiful and mesmerizing I didn’t want her to stop.
I could hear the people around me, some giggling and some vomiting or, purging medicine into their buckets. I checked myself, asking if should I purge but I felt a gentle presence speak inside of me saying: ‘No, you’re fine. Just relax.’
They call this presence Mother Ayahuasca. The reason people drink the brew is to speak with and receive her guidance.
My eye mask was back on my face and I turned into the fetal position with the duvet pulled over my head I felt exceptionally comfy with this strange yet familiar presence as I started to explore the un-intimidating hallucinogenic world within my mind. She showed me complex pictures of flowing energy with multicoloured lights in perfect alignment while I was gently gliding along, watching the beautiful colourful spectacle.
It was around this time that Sun asked into the ceremony if anybody would like a second dose. I slowly sat upright and looked around. I checked myself. Truthfully, I was enjoying the experience. I was slightly nervous that having more could take me to a deeper, darker place however I had mentally prepared myself for the full immersion experience.
The presence told me: ‘It’s okay. You can handle it. I’ll be gentle.’
So I pulled on my shoes, got up and slowly walked over feeling slightly wobbly. I was worried Sun might tell me I’d had enough but when I sat in front of her, she gave me a big smile and beckoned me towards her. The second dose was about half the previous one and tasted familiar, not quite as harsh.
After I got up I walked out of the tent into the house. Sitting in the small toilet I saw the walls gently rippling with energy and recognized the phenomenon from previous psychedelic experiences. I’ve experienced mild, LSD-induced hallucinations before but nothing quite as mesmerizing as watching bright sparks of colorful energy emerging from objects and pictures.
Snuggling back under my duvet I listened to the rattles and felt myself floating deeper into the kaleidoscopic universe seeing my own body curled up but instead of my skin and flesh, I saw myself as streaming veins of energy. Millions of thin fibre optic threads pulsated with warm healing energy which outlined my body.
I felt myself lying on the floor in the jungle with mystical symbols and ineffable tribal figures around me. I felt like I was in a different, timeless dimension however I was surprisingly lucid and could snap out of it to check myself with ease. At some point I had to giggle as my boring pragmatist made the smart-ass remark, ‘You’re not lying in the jungle. You’re in a garden less than 100 meters from the Thames estuary!’
I had my eyes closed for most of the afternoon. I was seeing ever richer patterns. When I opened my eyes the patterns were still there but they were overlaid on the reality in front of my eyes. I could change them with the blink of an eye or bring back shapes I had seen previously.
I started thanking this entity for showing me all this beauty and felt the urge to reciprocate. I revealed some personal memories but they looked so very different. It seemed like they had a photo filter applied that filled the memory with golden light as they came alive with breathtaking beauty, streaming with colourful energy. I visited various life moments and it felt like entering into a photo and suddenly being there on that day!
I was there sitting in our garden at home. Once again I was a chubby baby covering my face with baked beans. I was actually there! I was picking the baked beans off my face and pushing them, one by one into my mouth.
They say that Mother Ayahuasca is a deep ancient spirit and I always imagined her as a deeply serious, majestic queen. I started wondering what she might look like… and so she appeared.
She was stern but not an old woman. Aya was young, perfectly matched to my age and exceptionally beautiful. She had long, smooth brown hair and big beautiful eyes filled with power and inspiration. As I looked closer at her exquisite face I realized that her features were constantly changing complexion. Her skin cycled from Amazonian to Latin to Nubian to Oriental and Mediterranean. She was outlined by swirling rainbow-coloured curls of light. The rest of her naked body only came into being when I directly looked at it. I realize that she was not one woman but a combination of every beautiful woman I’ve ever felt attracted to. I wanted her. She wanted me. We kissed and whirled around as we floated through my Entheoverse. My body of swirling rainbow energy flowed into her and hers into mine and this is how we made love passionately.
I had visions of us being on a summer weekend getaway in a stylish city. We lay in luxurious hotel rooms and I remember a cream-coloured clock on the wall, with Roman numerals but no hands to tell the time. I was dressed smartly as I led her by her hand into classy restaurants that had champagne poured, waiting by our table. It was like we were on a never-ending date, teleporting from one experience into the next, eloping while taking our time to enjoy each other’s energy, and passionately loving one another.
Afterwards, she lay in my arms and I asked what else she could show me and she replied; ‘What else would you like me to show you?’ I wasn’t prepared for this and my mind went a bit blank realizing that I could do anything, go anywhere in space and time I wanted.
I asked her; ‘Can you help me find my confidence?’
There was no clear answer. Instead, I had the random idea to become the temple stem of my friend Julio’s glasses. I looked at him from the bit next to the hinge and I could see him put the glasses on in the morning, and take them off at night and in the reflection of his right eye, I saw him coming home and watched his beautiful daughter jumping into his arms. Then I saw on his eyeball the reflection of me walking into the room and a felt warm glow spread through me.
Next, I visited my baby nephew sitting in my brother’s living room, in his red chair. I crossed my hands on my chest like he does and saw my brother and his wife smiling at me giving me warm hugs but more than seeing their faces while they hugged my body I could feel the way they felt when they put their arms around me and press me to their chests.
I saw all my brother’s smiles and happy faces as we jollied about, trying to make each other laugh as we do. I visited all my closest friends, took in their smiles and one by one, as I hugged each of them, I could feel their love for me.
Later I realized that Aya was indeed trying to give me confidence by showing me how much the people in my life care for me
I visited the girl I had just started dating called Anna whose raw energy I find simply irresistible. I came into her new apartment that I’d never visited before. She was standing in sexy lingerie by a floor-to-ceiling window looking down onto the busy Tottenham Court road. I remember her turning her beautiful face as I approached, touching it with ten fingers and kissing her lips passionately as we erupted into rainbow swirls of energy.
I also visited my ex-girlfriend Jo, whose body and spiritual mind I still loved but whose soul is too damaged by the fear of rejection and tough mental armour I never managed to vanquish.
She was asleep in our white room in LA that she had so carefully decorated and I spooned my energy into her little body. She woke and we cuddled and kissed and I said I was sorry it didn’t work out between us and she replied; ‘It’s ok. I wasn’t ready for you…’
I asked Aya if we had made the right decision to stop forcing it and just be friends and felt her nod wisely.
At some point, I remember all three of us lying in bed together but instead of feeling like the king of the world, I felt like a greedy pig.
One of the underlying themes of the whole journey was how slowly gently and unhurried everything felt and I think the lesson I was meant to learn was that it’s ok to not settle right now — I thought I just haven’t found the one, the right woman to share my life with…
Aya kept giving me gentle advice throughout. I asked her about the stimulants I love such as cannabis, coffee and alcohol but instead of the stern telling-off I was secretly hoping to receive she told me; ‘You know they don’t serve you when you abuse them but they are also a part of what shaped you… Take care of the beautiful body you have been given.’
She repeated many times; Take care of yourself more… take care.
I asked Aya how I could find the power to harness my mind which has always been blessed and cursed with a distracting imagination and to keep my lack of attention from killing my dreams.
Instantly, I saw an unreal version of myself.
I was standing in something like a black shiny display window, straight out of a Mercedes advert. This guy was not merely a little bit better than I am now and I realized that the version staring back at me was my best self!
That guy is sharp, he is determined, and he dresses immaculately. That guy knows exactly what he is doing. When he enters the room, people notice his presence from the invisible halo that brightly surrounds him.
I asked Aya, how I could become him and the answer became clear. That guy works. He knows exactly where his energy comes from and all of a sudden I understood — The confident image he projects comes from the love he feels for himself which makes him look loved and successful in other people’s eyes. There is no room for distraction because that guy knows his worth and knows his purpose.
She gave me such a clear image of myself. I can still see myself standing motionless in the black, shiny shop window with rainbow-coloured fibre optic strains lighting the air that gently flowed around me.
How long I lay like that is impossible to say but I guess it was around 5–6 hours but it felt like an eternity of journeying into myself.
But it wasn’t all just warm energy and neon colours. I distinctly remember at some point realizing, it was time to go to the toilet. Afterwards, I walked back into the garden and found the Ewok-faced little terrier yapping at me. I laughed at him as I noticed the blue silver and chrome energy swirls around his head and ears. I couched down to see if I could pacify him but I suddenly became aware that his barking must be interfering with other people’s experiences. I turned to hurry into the tent as one of the shamans came out, to tell off the dog saying; ‘What’s wrong doggy, he’s alright!’ As I walked into the tent there were certainly more people sitting upright than when I had left and I read some irritated expressions on people’s faces, at least three people got up and walked out.
I lay down in shame but all my friend’s energy avatars ran up to me saying ‘It’s fine!’ as they doggy piled on top of me. It made me feel better. I felt them warm the cold shame out of me and I began relaxing again. I played around as before but the energy had markedly changed, it didn’t feel as light-hearted anymore. It was heavier and more serious. I was feeling the effects of the medicine becoming even stronger so I decided to sit up but when I opened my eyes, I saw Nubia hit the deck at my feet on a hastily arranged bed after having just purged into a bucket. I could see vomit in her black wavy hair as I started to think, ‘…oh dear if even the shamans are starting to falter, I’m in trouble.’
I didn’t know what to do. I tried to lie back down again. I asked Aya to help me, as she had several times previously when I’d gotten a little bit frightened but this time I could not sense her presence and I knew why. I had to go through this for myself.
It felt like I was sitting in a shopping trolley, rolling down a steep hill toward darkness, realizing as it picked up speed and bucked to and fro that this had been a bad decision, a dangerous idea and the only way it would end would be for the momentum to collide with suffering.
I needed help so I weakly put up my hand and within a few seconds, one of the shamans sat down next to me. She was wearing a white feather dress and occoured to me like an angel. She helped me sit up and as soon as I was sitting upright I began to retch. She passed me my bucket which I gratefully barfed into…
After I purged I felt better. My angel asked me if I felt okay again and I asked her to stay with me and hold my hand for a while longer, which she did. I gently leaned over and rested my head on her feathery bosom and felt a sense of peace and strength flow back into me. I saw my energy self, the swirling electrons of light curling my limbs as I sat cross-legged, hunched over like a bear cub being cradled by his mother bear.
She helped me lie back down and I started to return to my technicoloured dream state. I asked Aya if we could make love again and she said ‘Of course’ but it felt different, when I opened my inner eye to see the face of the person I was entangled with I saw my own. Aya had taken on my form and this might well be the strangest thing I’ve ever written but I was exceptionally attracted to myself and I realized that this could be how girls who are in bed with me see me. I could feel the burning desire a girl feels when we make love. It felt strange but also good.
They said Ayahuasca show you not what you want to see but rather what you need to see at any specific point in your life.
I visited countless friends, some people no longer in my life becouse we have grown apart and even those whose who have passed away. I visited my German grandparents and told them how much I loved them.
While I cuddled Oskar, the dog I grew up with, and played with him in our garden I looked up to see my dad approach us with tears in his eyes. I knew what he was going to say. When he told me that my grandmother had died I didn’t run away in confusion as I had on that day, instead, I went to hug my mom and for the first time, I empathized with the pain she had felt in that moment of hearing that her mother had passed.
I visited my friend Keith whose passing I have always felt a slight responsibility for since I know he read my travel blog and went to Costa Rica a month after I’d been there where he swam out to sea and drowned. I hugged him tightly and cried gently but he grabbed me firmly by the shoulders and said; ‘It wasn’t you! It wasn’t you…’
I visited my old school friend Alex who I had not been close to but whose misfortune to be on flight 447 still touched me. I told him and his beautiful fiance whom I’d never met that I was so sorry for them having been so frightened when they died but instead of me comforting them, they hugged and comforted me as I lay there silently crying for the people I missed. But it was not painful. Quite the opposite, it felt cathartic, like I was letting out the pain and healing myself.
At some point, while it was still light out Sun said “OK, I know that some of you are still on your journey but we will start having some food soon so if you want to share what you experienced now is the time.” I listened to some of the reports.
Several people said that they had a very rough ride because they had tried to fight it. One girl even said she was convinced she was dying. I felt very lucky and grateful for my gentle, warm ride through my multi-coloured Enthenoverse and wondered if I would ever return…
When it was my turn I said that I had finally been able to see how my friends and family see me and why they think I am awesome which will give me the confidence to finally believe that I am awesome (that got a laugh :). I also shared my new appreciation for how profoundly beautiful my life has been up until now and hoped that it will give me the strength to stop comparing myself to others, to focus on my own path and become my best self.
10 weeks later
My life has undeniably changed over the last 10 weeks.
The following day I drove back to my rented shepherd’s hut in a nature reserve and had an exceptionally rich experience walking through the marshes. The sun was shining and everything seemed so intensely beautiful. I was moved just by watching something as simple as a male and a female bird fly across the water in perfect sync. It made me well up emotionally.
I’ve cried a lot recently and I believe it’s a good thing. I cry on most days.
Usually, it happens when I see someone doing something kind and for a brief moment I get overwhelmed and shed a tear. But again, they are not tears of pain they are usually tears of joy and I feel like I have become much more in touch with my emotions.
It feels like bringing Aya’s female spirit into my awareness has tripped a switch in my brain making me more feminine, hence a more complete human being. I’ve also started to care more about my appearance. My mum commented recently that I looked different and she is right. I’ve been working out more. I get my hair cut more frequently and I’ve even gone and bought new clothes that dress me with more style, even when it’s not particularly necessary.
My work attitude has also changed. I find myself a lot more productive and capable of operating at a higher level while enjoying the entire experience so much more!
I honestly feel more in control of my life. I feel focused on who I am, who I can become and what I can achieve. Previously my decisions in life seemed more vague and fuzzy.
Above all, I feel the happiest that I have felt since childhood. The last 10 weeks have been almost like a too-good-to-be-true dream for me.
I’m also positively influencing the people around me. My grandfather wrote me the following sentence after my most recent visit.
You have this mysterious gift of raising the spirits of people both just by being there and by your gift of empathy. Epilogue
I have indeed had more Ayahuasca ceremonies since I first wrote this and even though there was a 4 year gap between my 4th and my 5th experience I have felt the effect compound over time. I will be publishing more of my trip reports over on medium and would appreciate your supporting me by following me over there where I also publish contant whihc is not just psychedilic in nature.
