2023.06.05 11:47 NYCIndieConcerts Mod's List - This Week in Live Rock / Indie / Alternative / Punk Shows (June 5 - 11)

Festival season is in full swing with Governors Ball taking over Flushing Meadows-Corona Park this upcoming weekend. It certainly would've been cool if Governors Ball could've booked some punk acts to join the handful of rock bands on the bill. Black Midi and Flipped will both be doing late night sets in Manhattan. John Mellencamp is posting up a residency at the Beacon in tandem with the Tribeca Festival. The UK's Church Village Collective make their NYC and more below.
If you're new to this sub or just passing through, each week I try to highlight the "best" upcoming rock, punk, indie and alternative shows. I scour the web and social media for concert announcement, booking, rescheduling, etc., and then pick which shows are vying for my time and money (or which would've been if they weren't sold out). This is not intended to be an exhaustive list as there are other non-reddit resources that cast a wider net on live shows, including pop, hip hop and comedy shows, but feel free to add any missing shows using the comments (especially for other genres).
As usual, listed times are approximate start times (not door); prices are estimates for door tickets, and do not include online fees and taxes.

2023.06.05 09:44 awfulhousethrowaway NK is a sweetheart at home, but awful everywhere else. NF want me to fix it through summer break. [Long, vent, advice needed.]

Hello everyone, a bit of a long story with way too much context to be had, so I thought I'd do me best to cut to the chase. I moved in with a father and his two year old ("Joshua,") who is now four. It was entirely unconventional. I needed somewhere to live and they offered nannying in exchange for rent for awhile, but later on when I had an actual job/interviews, I "couldn't go," because they'd make plans and leave me with Josh. Eventually, this just became "the thing."
The custody arrangement between the parents gave me two evenings off per week up until September, to which it swapped to week to week. In other words, I had Josh for all but eight hours per week for a year and a half, and now I have him full time two-three weeks a month. He's become very close to me, and in a non-egocentric way, only really listens to me as I have been the only real constant in his life.
However, in my time living here, Josh was "expelled," from two daycares for hitting, biting, scratching, etc. We've also gotten countless calls from his current preschool for similar disputes. He's partially special needs, so one of his teachers recommended he be enrolled in a Charter school because he is smart, but he needs an acclimated environment. There aren't many locally, and the parents live three hours apart. We finally found one in the middle of us who are willing to surpass district laws, but now with summer break coming up and his behavioral issues exacerbating, we're worried he's going to be expelled from that school too. They won't be nearly as patient as this preschool has been, should that happen, the father, kiddo and I will have to pack up and move those three hours away because the other charter school is in the mothers hometown.
Almost all of his disciplinary action, his rewards systems, his learning to read, write, and speak has been up to me. The parents give me a lot of "He won't listen when I do it, so you do it," as if I don't endure the same tantrums they do. I just don't think they put in much effort. He's been in both speech and occupational therapy, but the parents consistently drop him off and leave, and I'm unsure if that's normal. I've asked both of them the name of his teachers, all of the therapists names, what they're practicing so we can work on it at home, and neither can answer any of the questions. A year ago, I asked to be put on the teachers/speech therapists text list so I can be up to date on what he's learning, and the answer (I suppose obviously,) was no, since I'm not a legal guardian.
This summer will give me 13hr days, 7 days a week, and that is all the time I'll have to try and "fix," his behavior. I can't control how he's raised in the other parents house the opposing weeks. He'll be in occupational therapy again this summer, but he almost never goes on our weeks (I don't have a car anymore), and again, they never know what he's actually doing there, so outside of the hour per week, he's not getting any practice in. I am unsure of what to do because as of now, he WILL get expelled quickly, we cannot afford to move, and I do not want to go with them - while also not wanting to leave the kid alone. To leave would take me further from "my life," but I literally just negotiated from $0.60 an hour to $2.00, so my options would be to move or not have a roof over my head.
Here's what I've incorporated -
- Limiting and controlling screentime, making sure he doesn't watch anything too wound up. No screens between dinner and bed.
- Reward systems, lots of "yays," "you did it!" "thank you!" and "good jobs!"
- Corner time when it calls for it.
- He's super into routine. I have alarms for all meals, naps, clean up, baths, etc. When there's an alarm or five minute warning, he'll drop everything and do as he needs to with little to no tantrums. Springing it on him will have all hell break loose.
- Creating homework for him when he rarely has it to help him keep up.
I do all of the gentle parenting I see online, and recently, the mother has picked up on it too and quit using spanking. The fathers picked up on it too, but hasn't given up spanking.
I just think a lot of this is over my head, and I can't "cure," his issues. FWIW, I think it's a combo of being a pandemic kid and special needs, he never became accustomed to socializing. His parents say he's "too hyper," to take anywhere, so he's never taught how to behave in restaurants, waiting rooms, stores, etc. The only time he goes out is when the "fun parent," takes him out to highly stimulating places (ie arcade, trampoline park) and I believe that emphasizes his hyperactivity.

The Short Monsoon Treks in Nepal - Easiest Treks in Nepal - Family Treks in Nepal - Ghorepan Poon Hill Trek - Mardi Himal Trek - Langtang Valley Trek - Dhampus Sarangkot Trek - Chisapni Nagarkot Trek - Everest View Trek - Mohare Danda Trek - Trekking in Nepal - Nepal Trekking Packages
Nepal, known for its stunning landscapes and majestic Himalayan peaks, offers a variety of trekking options for adventure enthusiasts. While many treks in Nepal are multi-day expeditions, there are also several shorter treks that allow you to experience the beauty of the region in a shorter period of time. Here are some short monsoon treks in Nepal.
Mesmerizing view from Poon Hill 3210m
  1. Poon Hill Trek: The Poon Hill Trek is a popular short trek in the Annapurna region. It typically takes about 4-5 days to complete and offers incredible views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. During the monsoon season, the lush greenery and blooming rhododendron forests make this trek even more enchanting.
  2. Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek: Similar to the Poon Hill Trek, the Ghorepani Trek is another short trek in the Annapurna region. It usually takes around 5-6 days to complete and takes you through beautiful villages, terraced fields, and dense forests. The trail offers panoramic views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peaks.
  3. Langtang Valley Trek: The Langtang Valley Trek is a relatively short trek that can be completed in about 7-8 days. Located close to Kathmandu, this trek takes you through the Langtang National Park, showcasing stunning landscapes, rhododendron forests, and the traditional Tamang culture. Despite being a monsoon trek, the Langtang region receives less rainfall compared to other parts of Nepal.
  4. Helambu Trek: The Helambu Trek is another short trek near Kathmandu that can be completed in about 6-7 days. This trek offers a mix of beautiful landscapes, traditional villages, and Buddhist monasteries. During the monsoon season, the trail is adorned with colorful flowers and cascading waterfalls.
  5. Mardi Himal Trek: The Mardi Himal Trek is a lesser-known but breathtaking trek in the Annapurna region. It usually takes around 5-6 days to complete. The trail takes you through lush forests, terraced fields, and high ridges with close-up views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre mountains.
It's important to note that the monsoon season in Nepal, which generally spans from June to September, brings heavy rainfall and cloudy conditions. Therefore, it's advisable to be prepared for rain, leeches, and occasional flight delays due to weather conditions. It's recommended to check with local trekking agencies and guides for the most up-to-date information and to ensure your safety during the trek.

2023.06.05 03:42 MangosAndManga Never let hubris get the better of you.

Sorry in advance for the long post, but I hope it's amusing!
I've been playing cataclysm off-and-on for about a year, but most of my runs have been pretty short-lived. I'd usually end up dying mid-summer due to dying to some acid-based zombie, but on my current run I've been doing much better than I ever have before. I've even managed to raid a lab, installing cbms and mutating myself along the way. It's amazing, but I don't know if I'll ever convince myself to play again if I die and lose my SĹŤjutsu + Lucerne Hammer combo. As a matter of fact, I nearly died today and almost tore my hair out in the process.
I was raiding a trans-coast logistics (which is a rather fancy name for what could otherwise just be called "big lab") for the first time, and my expedition was going wonderfully. I found a couple of mutagens along with other specialized lab equipment, and neither the bots nor the zombies were putting up too much of a fight (I even managed to obliterate a melded task force by melee alone!) - in other words, I was getting a little too cocky. In my hubris, I stopped my usual tactic of kiting zombies and leaving the lab to heal every time I hit "moderate pain" and started running through the lab as fast as possible, looking for the last piece of home-lab equipment I was missing (the fabled fractional distillation apparatus)
At one point, I enter a room with only a single cleaning bot in it. For those who haven't encountered them, this is a timid little bot which doesn't even so much as fight back. I didn't need to kill it... and in fact, doing so would serve little purpose at this point. But I was beyond the point of needless things like "caution" and "basic reasoning ability". So instead of leaving it alone, I stab it... ...only for it to explode and set me on fire. In approximately sixty in-game seconds my danger level drops from hydrogen bomb to crying baby as both of my legs burn up (along with my combat boots which I had grown so fond of - goodbye sweet acid protection), leaving me practically immobile and in-severe pain in one of the lower floors of the hardest area in the game. Hoo boy. At least the fire went out after it finished burning my legs...
After spending a couple seconds crying (irl) and calling out to god for help (in-game), I mentally debate the idea of smashing some furniture in the lab, crafting a splint and simply waiting out my recovery in this cleaning bot's now empty room. But of course, I didn't bring a coat (I flashback to four minutes ago, where my past self is laughing at the idea of staying the lab long enough for the cold to get to me. It'll be in-and-out before my morning coffee is done brewing [again, irl], he says to himself). I don't know if it gets cold enough in the lab for someone to freeze to death, but I decide not to test that theory. So, my heart still pounding, I drag my pathetic, burned body across the floor of the lab through the "safe route" I cleared out earlier. I run into a couple skitterbots on the way there, thinking my run would be ended by the most pathetic enemies the game has to offer, but apparently they can't even hit a barely-moving target. I barely do any damage in my weakened state, but managed to finally beat each one after four in-game minutes of fighting.
Eventually I manage to exit the facility. But I still have another challenge ahead of me - getting home. Usually I'd just walk my "safe-ish" route through a forest, but now even the idea of running into a regular zombie sends shivers up my spine. Thankfully, the lab's parking lot has ton of cars... most of which I drove back to my home base on earlier trips when I was scoping out the place. Whoops. Luckily, there's a single working car left in the parking lot... a tiny beetle which would probably send me to heaven if it hit an oversized pebble. Still, beggars can't be choosers. I get in, and I'm delighted to find there's still a quarter-full tank of fuel. I'm less delighted to find that I can't see over the dashboard while prone, but I find out after five minutes of harrowing blind driving that - thankfully - you can sit on seats even while your legs are crippled so long as you don't move to a new tile. Please don't think about how I managed to operate the gas pedals without working limbs - and to any devs reading; please do not implement anything based on my last sentence. The rest of the drive still makes my hair stand on end, especially when passing a triffid grove and "place where I saw a mi-go once and avoided for the entire next in-game season", but I finally make it home, craft splints for my legs, and collapse on my cozy bed.
I wake up the next morning with fully healed limbs. I know I have good in-game health and the "very fast healing" mutation, but thinking about what my body did overnight gives me the shivers irl. I'm more blob than man at this point, and it's not just because I'm fat this time!
Anyways, I digress. I come away from this experience wielding lessons more crucial than any weapon:
1) Don't get cocky in games with permadeath
2) Always tip the cleaning lady, or at least do not skewer her with a spear-like implement.
3) Humanity peaked at the discovery of fire. It was our scariest weapon back then and it still is today.

2023.06.05 00:18 Thick_Mick_Chick M.O.N.S.T.E.R. Nursery

Let me be the first to welcome you to the MotheOffspring, Nurturing/Support, Teaching/Education Resource Network, or? M.O.N.S.T.E.R. Nursery. My name is Sassy, short for Sasquatch. Yes, THAT sasquatch. Are there other kinds?! I'm a HCC (Healthcare Cryptid) here at the nursery. I also teach humans the survival basics of coming across a baby monster in the woods.
Anyhoo, you're probably wondering why Sasquatch are utilized as Labor and Delivery nurses. It's simple, really. We're natural born mothers. You see, we just love babies! We always have! All of that nonsense about whooping, tree knocking and vocalizations that we do in the woods when you guys are camping? Don't get scared! That's just us shouting out to our boys letting them know we have humans in the woods! Humans could possibly have a BABY with them. Now, I don't like to judge based on looks, but those bald human babies are so ugly? They're cute! Poor little things look like they have mange, though. Who would think a bald puppy is cute? Ew.
I digress. So, when it came to the M.O.N.S.T.E.R. Nursery? We were the natural choice. Even though I happen to be female? History tells us that male nursery nurses happen to have the best bonding with our little devils. Well, little devils and whoever else was born that day. Just look at Chewy over there bonding with that litter of werewolf pups born on the last full moon. He's so maternal? He's practically a breast.
Now, all babies are not created equal. Have you ever wondered which monster's baby is the loudest? I can promise you that you'd rather listen to that werewolf pup litter any day over being 5 minutes late with Baby Siren Head's bottle. I had a headache for a week. When Vlad and Countess Bathory had their little undead bundle of joy last month? You'd be surprised how quick a Bigfoot can prick and milk their finger to get a fresh bottle of nutritious blood for that adorable, pale little parasite. He definitely had a healthy appetite, especially if you were B positive. Vlad and Countess Bathory couldn't have been happier. Patient satisfaction has always been a priority for HCCs (Healthcare Cryptid) since day one! We've never gotten below a 5 on the Jack Link's scale of 0 - 5 jerkies. We are collectively very proud of this fact! It's such an accomplishment for Bigfoot and all of Sasquatch kind.
Okay, I could understand why you think we're a little full of ourselves. I, mean, when Sasquatch are the chosen ones to be the top requested HCC? It's a far fall to the 2nd position. Look, we can't all be God's Chosen Ones. Yes, he exists. Yes, he created us. You're getting distracted, again. We aren't all going to argue semantics on what is Creationism and what is Darwinism and all of that. I'm too busy trying to teach incompetent, um cough cough, INTERESTED humans how to provide the most basic care for any creature's neonates (medical term for newborn) that they might stumble across while enjoying hiking, camping, fishing, etc. The priority? The newborn. Additional concerns?
1) MotheFather finding humans around newborn and attacking them.
2) Humans treating the scenario like an episode of "Jack Ass" and thinking it's a good idea to "mess with" the newborn and? Again? Mom/Dad attacks them.
3) Basically? A human breathing will set Mom/Dad off. Most creatures just don't want humans around. They can't be trusted. Sorry, Guys. It's been that way every since you refused to credit Chewy in the '67 Patterson–Gimlin film.
So? Your first reaction, if you see a baby creature? Look for it's parents. If you see them? Run. Run fast. Like, put Forrest Gump to shame kinda runnin'. Those parents don't want you there for any reason at all. Pick 'em up and put 'em down the whole way back down the trail.
If you don't see the parents? Proceed slowly and with caution. Now, don't let everything I've said scare you into not helping a baby monster. They're babies, after all. Please, check on them. Just be aware of your surroundings so as not to frighten the wood creatures which will, in turn, attack you. Then? It's just a bad day for everyone involved.
So? Depending on the woodland creature? You'll want to know what action you need to take to help the baby and? Hopefully? Survive assisting. The first thing you'll want to do is call out/whistle, whatever you have to do to try to get someone's attention. Look around and listen. What do you see and hear? If it's nothing? Again, proceed with caution. If you hear howling, growling, tree knocking, whooping, any of these things? Leave, either their parents are still around or we're there and will then takeover. I know. It's confusing to try to tell when we're tree knocking hoping you have a baby with you or if we know there's a baby around and we don't want you around the baby. Really, if at all possible, just don't mess with the babies if you don't have to. With that having been said? Let's proceed!
As you cautiously approach? Keep making noise letting everyone know you're there. We don't want to scare the life, or afterlife, out of these little ones. They're at their most vulnerable right now. Let's use Chewy's patients today as an example. You traipse along and stumble over a werewolf den. Well, that's not something you see every day. You hear soft whimpering. About 4 or 5 little werewolf pup heads pop up out of the den. How's everyone looking? Is anyone hurt? No? Then check your supplies. It just so happens you were successful fishing earlier. Werewolf pups love fish almost as much as moonbathing and cutting their baby teeth on a human femur. They'll be thankful, the Alpha male and female will be thankful and you'll really be thankful. You get to walk away, karma and limbs intact.
Next? It would be highly likely that you'd come across a wendigo, skinwalker, rake slenderman, etc. besides just a litter of werewolf pups. Try to prepare yourself as much as possible for these encounters. The better prepared? The better off everyone will be. The best part? These creatures won't want your everlasting soul in infancy. Those challenges don't present until adolescence. So? Enjoy the respite for the moment. Now? No matter what the situation? You'll always want to approach with caution and announce your arrival. It's saved not only many a human? It's saved a lot of cryptids as well. Try to have some sort of food item on you that's rather filling. You'd prefer that over them making YOU the food item.
So, as we proceed down the trail, there's a cabin to the left and it's the last house but do not enter, please. The last good hearted Samaritan did and, well, let's just say he had a run in with a girl locked in the cellar who wasn't quite herself. That's probably about the most PC way of explaining demonic possession. Anyhoo, there was bad press for a year and visitors to the park fell off, it just was a big mess. They ended up doing some kind of cybernetic enhancement and now the good Samaritan has a chainsaw for an arm. He's done a great job keeping them all in line. Overall? That was one we got right.
Since I brought up Vlad and the Countess Bathory's bouncing little bundle of bloodsucker? It's important to know that if you are in your domicile, and R.V.'s count, vampires cannot enter without an invitation from you. So, if you are camping in your R.V. and someone comes knocking late at night? Don't answer. If they aren't a vampire? They can come back the next day. If they don't come back? You definitely made the right decision. Now, the problem is? If you encounter a vampire in the wild. Hopefully? They've already set their sights on whoever they picked that night to be their victim. If not? A dropper of Holy Water as perfume on either side of your neck is a nice deterrent. Again, if the little count is there by himself? He's clearly gotten away from the castle. He needs returned immediately. Go to the nearest tree that displays a "break in case of emergency" box. Break the glass, take the bag of beef jerky out, shake it. Every Sasquatch in a 5 mile radius will come running to you. Point the baby vampire out and we'll be glad to take it from there.
Something I should bring up to our do-gooders ready to risk it all: if you can't swim? Don't try to help aquatic creatures. It won't end well. It never does. Little fry just aren't acclimated to landlubbers. Merpups are tough for even us to handle. They get scared, you can't swim, bad things happen. So? If you're determined to help any baby monster no matter where they reside? Take swimming lessons. You'll thank me. Trust me on this.
Don't let the fae trip you up, either. They're mischievous. They'll also try to sneak a changeling in on you if you do bring your human babies to the forest. If you respect walking around fairy rings and respect mother nature? The fae shouldn't be an issue. If you don't? Well, you were warned.
So, what have we not covered? Flying creatures. Yes, they present a challenge even we Sasquatch find difficult. It's hard to assess the needs of a baby that's wrapped in the arms of a mother flying 75 feet above your head. Even though the task is daunting? It's a challenge we'll definitely take on. We just watch and wait for Mom to go on the hunt and we take a peak at that tiny little velociraptor in that nest, with it's mouth hanging wide open, just awaiting a morsel. Now, the Mothman's baby was an experience. Cocoons are just something you have to see for yourself, especially when they're 6 feet tall. It's truly fascinating!
I think that covers everything for today's lesson. Bear in mind, we're beginning the summer season here in the U.S. Encounters are going to increase between cryptids and humans so be aware and care when it comes to our babies. We're aware and care when it comes to yours. Stay safe and Sasquatch on!

If weird cartoon rectangles with heart feet don't sell you on this forest walk, then...I dunno.
Most hiking clubs revolve around big hikes on the weekends, but there's also so many cool trails within fifteen minutes of Portland, and I was thinking it could be a fun, low-commitment way to get a little exercise and meet other people who are into nature and walking/hiking/whatever.
This is being organized through "Get After It", which is a Portland-based hiking, climbing, biking, etc group. If you're into anything outdoors and looking for other people to do it with, check it out!

Okay, cool! Hope to see a few of ya out there!

2023.06.04 17:14 floatingfree2020 28[M4R] Poland - Dear soon-to-be-friend...

Warm welcome to You. stranger! I hope you're having a good day and that you're at peace with your mind :)
I like to mix both long and deep discussions about certain topics with rather casual, daily talk. I'm looking here for someone unique and inspiring. A positive, open minded person that I could gain something from and vice versa. To push each other forward, to overcome obstacles and simply go with the flow and enjoy our time together. Lately, I've been wasting too much time doing silly and unproductive things and I know I can do better than that.
I'm up for a talk in Polish, English and basic Russian.
Few facts about me
I'm a rather calm person while being at home, but when I feel good and everything goes well, I've got plenty of positive energy that I'm willing to share with other people, hopefully making their day better
I hold the view that the most important thing in life is a progress of the soul and trying to be the best version of yourself, constant spiritual growth and realizing that we're all one consciousness experiencing each other subjectively and thus, separation is an illusion
I love nature; going for a walk in a forest or by the lake as well as visiting parks while listening to my favourite music / podcasts gives a lot of good vibes
Powerful cycling on my mountain bike, feeling the speed and momentum of that adrenaline rush is what I truly adore
I'm free from any prejudices and stay away from politics / all kind of things that are made to manipulate and agitate the masses to create inner conflicts
I'm not a huge fan of memes
I made a decision to almost completely cut myself off from daily news as I found it unproductive, time consuming and often giving me negative emotions
I used to be listening mainly metal music, but recently I opened up for new genres, mainly electronics; psybient ( Suduaya <3) / psytrance / downtempo / drum'n'bass (DJ Turno <3) / synthwave, phonk, trance and more
I like to watch football, especially my national league
I'm very interested into games and I'd be willing to play some online ones with you on PC / Switch
I like to make some photos and videos of my daily life and would like to share it with you
I try to eat healthy
I'm interested into alternative medicine and natural supplements / herbs
I stay away from NS FW content
I want to come back to being fit - start exercising again and just feel better physically
I don't have any pet myself, but I like to watch different pet videos from all around the world
I'm a person that is willing to listen, support and give honest opinions on different matters
I'm very interested into space, ancient civilizations and the origins of mankind, trying to raise my consciousness each day and be at peace with my mind
Lately I got inspired with the philosophy of stoicism and take some principals of Buddhism as well. Overall looking for Eastern traditions and ancient wisdom
I'm an absolute lover of the Sun and whenever it shines during dark and cold Eastern European winters I go outside, sometimes even spread my arms toward it and let it shine on my face
I'm extremely interested into topics of consciousness, artificial intelligence, alien civilisations, panpsychism and theories about the meaning of life, beginning of existence, future of humanity etc.
Recently I got into watching National Geographic documentaries on Disney +
Lately I got myself a VR headset to explore this technology
I like to watch IRL streams from all around the world
Soon I'm moving out from my parents to a newly build apartment
What impressions do you have on me after reading that small bio? Do you think we could get to know each other better? Hit me up with a DM or via chat and let's find out, shall we? :)
