My boyfriend got upset that my friend who is in an open relationship was talking to guys at a bar we were at tonight, he did not approve of her behavior. I told him that I didn't think flirting was a big deal and if a cute guy flirts with me I flirt back, it's fun and IMO harmless. He was really hurt so I apologized and tried to explain that I don't have any romantic or sexual intentions with other people and that I am happy in our relationship. He did not seem receptive and was getting angry, I told him he was being an asshole and he walked ahead of me (on our walk home) and then locked me out of our place. I had a key so I walked in and he wouldn't talk to me the rest of the night and told me I had to sleep on the couch. My neck hurts from a 4 day drive/cross country move I recently did and the couch was making it worse, so I tried to open the bedroom door to ask if he would reconsider and that is when I realized he locked the bedroom door.
I guess I could have handled the situation better, maybe my choice of words sucked, but I feel like he overreacted and I am being punished for his insecurities. I'm really angry right now, how do I approach the situation in the morning without making the situation worse? Obviously he is upset and I want to reassure him that I am committed to him, but I'm also really mad at how he handled the situation.

I had no idea my cat was pregnant when I adopted her. She is currently 9 months old. I got her 1 1/2 months ago from a person who owned more than 10 cats. She told me she doesn't have the money to take care of them anymore and would rather find them good homes instead of giving them to a shelter. Since she was the only girl that was supposedly not pregnant and I love black cats so I wanted her really bad. I took her home and after a month, I noticed she looked round around the stomach. I thought she was just bloated. 2 days ago, she gave birth to 4 kittens, one just died a few hours ago due to fading kitten syndrome. I do not have a heating pad and I am worried more will die. I just moved them next to a radiator for tonight but I don't know if it's a good idea in the long run. Thoughts?

2023.06.05 11:02 six4head ATSV - Themes, Details, and Writing [EXTREME SPOILERS]

Seen it twice, probably going to go a third time.
There's a lot of interesting things I noticed on rewatch. Second time I really tried to pick up on all the minor details, pay more attention to the script, the construction of the movie since I wasn't too busy having my eyeballs blasted into the back of my skull... but on rewatch, I think this probably one of the best Spider-Man stories ever put to film, if not the best. It's really painfully refreshing to see this after the MCU's take on the character left me near ice cold.
All the multiverse stuff aside, the movie is built around an idea, and a question.
Can Miles have his cake and eat it too? Is it possible to be Spider-Man without the personal sacrifices that heroism demands of the role, and the personal tragedy that defines who he is? They straight up say this as a line of dialogue. The school counselor flat out says to Miles' parents that he can't have his cake and eat it too, to which Miles responds, flippantly, unless you buy two cakes!
It's no coincidence that the movie then proceeds to show him buying two cakes and messing them both up.
Is it possible to be Spider-Man without having to sacrifice anything? The movie immediately throws Pavitr Prabhakar up as a case study for this. His introduction is perfect. Pavitr's dialogue: "Being Spider-Man is so easy." He is someone who has never had to sacrifice, had everything come naturally to him, and expects his problems to solve themselves ("Another easy case for Spider-Man!"). That's why his canon event involved the death of his girlfriend's father. As he's trying to pull the bus with his girlfriend in it up from the bridge, he's pleading, not joking. "I can save both!" Thanks to Miles, he does, and the captain immediately approves of his relationship with his daughter.
This whole idea comes to a head with the orbital elevator chase. It's not a heroic or triumphant moment, even though Miguel is essentially a feral lunatic at that point in the movie, sick of cleaning up other people's messes and Miles' in particular. The scriptwriters chose to have him reference the "My name is Miles Morales" speech, but also notable is what they omit from that speech. The full text includes the line 'And for six months I have been Brooklyn's one and only Spider-Man'. He says the line, but he ends it at 'I was bitten by a radioactive spider', the thing that gives him his powers, the thing that makes him special. He's not Spider-Man in that moment, because he's acting entirely based on his own desires, to hell with the risk it would cause to his own universe or the larger multiverse. He's a fifteen year old kid who refuses to lose his dad.
And when he returns to what he thinks is his universe, he's hopped up on what he's done. The swinging sequence through the rain, showing what he's been through, throws up Spider-Ham's line - "the worst thing about this job is that you can't save everybody". Miles speaking to who he thinks is his mother is uncomfortable. Even the dialogue is ominous. Compared to the sequence where Gwen pours out her heart to her father, this has some much darker hints. Miles says his mother was right (her concerns about how the people he meets might not love him like she does), but it doesn't matter, because he beat them. He beat them all. He brags to his mother about it. He tells her because in that moment, he thinks he's stronger, better than the others, and he can tell his family without consequence. At this moment, Miles is fully convinced he can have it all.
Of course, he's then immediately faced with the realization that because he got bitten from a spider not from his universe, Earth-42's New York looks like Gotham City on a Tuesday.
(One incredibly dark hint I noticed - when he realizes he's in the wrong Earth, we dimly hear his Uncle Aaron discussing money with his mother. His mother is talking about shifts, saying she won't have the money, and his uncle is reassuring her that it's alright, she doesn't have to pay him immediately. Just from these brief snippets of dialogue you can infer that his uncle is extorting money from his mother.)
I'm actually more worried about the third movie, because they have to answer this question definitively. If Miles can really have his cake and eat it too, it makes the sacrifices every other Spider-Man has gone through to become who they are and what they've done inherently pointless. There's no reason that Peter wouldn't save Uncle Ben if Miles could save his father without consequence, and then you get the same issues that happen when the Flash decides to go back in time and save his mother. There's some issue with having canon be the critical story element, because a canon event and what counts as breaking canon/causing the universe to collapse, as well as the ability to model canon events with a reasonable degree of accuracy, have serious implications for every universe they're in.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. All came and went with no sign of Mandy. Daisy was really concerned, as were several others in the house by now. Hallie mentioned maybe going to the police once, which was weird for her, as she was generally pretty opposed to that sort of thing.
On Tuesday evening, Wally, Nick, and Tuğrul started going around to a couple of places they knew Mandy often crashed if she spent a night away. None of the usual folks, it transpired, had seen her.
"Not even Messy Kyne," Tuğrul shrugged.
It had to be difficult for him, going and hanging around the dealer he and Mandy both frequented. He had weaned himself mostly down from the horse for a while, but he mentioned to Paul, just randomly, that the temptation was painfully strong.
"But I don't want to want it anymore," he said. "It upsets Wally."
Nick went out a bunch on Wednesday and talked to folks he knew might have seen Mandy about, but no one seemed to know shit.
"Jolly thought he saw her on Sunday," he said, "but turns out that was the week before."
"You sure?" Paul asked.
"Yeah. Asked him about some other stuff. He remembered seeing her after a show at Undone. The show that got them raided and shut down Sunday before the last. They won't open again for a month."
"Oh."
Paul had found himself taking care of Danny a lot the past few days, if Daisy or Hallie or Dave 'n' Rip were busy.
And they were often busy.
Still, it was not turning out so bad. The kiddo turned out to really enjoy being read to, so they had been working through Proust's stuff together. Paul understood the baby probably did not comprehend half of what was being said, but he did listen very intently, until he got rather hungry or tired or needed changing.
On Thursday, Paul woke pre-dawn to a pretty frantic knocking on his bedroom door. Leaping from the bed, he cleared the distance in two hopping steps and yanked the door open.
"What?" he huffed. "You tryin' to wake Dan?"
"Sorry," Nick shrugged. "House meeting."
"Right now?"
Another shrug.
"Hallie's insisting."
"All right."
Blinking hard a couple of time, Paul went and got Danny out of the cot. Probably the baby would sleep on a while, but he wanted to be close at hand in case not. Then he trooped downstairs after Nick.
Everyone was in the kitchen, bleary-eyed and chattering quietly. Paul found a seat and plopped himself down, yawning. Nick ended up leaning against the wall beside him.
"What's this even about?" asked Wally. "And will it be quick?"
"It'll be as quick as we all make it," Hallie said.
"All right, but I need to leave for work in half an hour."
"As to what this is about," Hallie went on, "it's the matter of Mandy bolting and leaving the lot of us stuck with her kid."
"We don't know she's left on purpose," Daisy pointed out.
"Be that as it may, she's still gone, and she's still left us saddled with a child. How exactly are we supposed to deal with this?"
"Like we have for a year now," Paul said. "Mandy never took care of Danny. We did."
"True. But Mandy at least was around. What happens if the cops at last decide to come 'round and kick us outta the squats? If they find an unattended kid here..."
"He's not unattended," Paul cut in.
"Not really, no. But legally, none of us is his parent. Mandy is. Could look weird if we just... Have her kid here when she's not."
Nick scoffed and shifted his back against the wall as if scratching an itch.
"Mandy's not exactly unknown to the cops," he said. "If we explained that she up and vanished on us, they'd probably basically get it."
"That's another thing," Hallie said. "We probably should report Mandy missing."
"Good point."
That was from Rip, who had been half-asleep and only spoke because Dave shook him.
"We probably should," Nick agreed, "but will they even take a report, let alone look for her? The cops can barely find their arses with both hands when they think a case matters. But looking for a shop girl who doubles as a prostitute to pay for her heroin habit? They won't give a damn. And anyway, that's liable to definitely call them down on us."
"I... I already tried to report her," Daisy said quietly, "on Tuesday."
"What'd the cops say?" Paul asked.
Daisy sighed and shook her head.
"They said she'd probably turn up. The one who took my information, he knew her by name, from when she got popped for shoplifting last year, and a few other things. Said girls like her run off all the time, and she'd probably turn up soon."
"Did you mention her kid?" Hallie asked.
"Yes. He said if we're concerned about who has custody of the child while Mandy's away, we should... We should bring the baby in. Said the authorities will look after matters."
"Can't be doin' that!" Wally suddenly burst out. "They'll put him in care! We can't let 'em!"
The shouting woke Danny, who whimpered and burrowed his face into Paul's shoulder.
"Pow," he blurred, "brek?"
"Brekkie soon, little fella. Wally, calm down. We're not puttin' Dan in care."
"Why not?" Hallie mused. "Probably the best thing. He could go to some good people who'll take care of him."
"WE take care of him!" Paul, Daisy, and Trick chorused.
That upset Danny a bit further, and Nick leant down.
"Lemme walk 'im around," he whispered to Paul.
After a moment's hesitation, Paul handed the baby over. Nick stepped out into the front hall, and he was singing softly as he walked around and around with Danny fussing against his shoulder.
"Clearly no one's taking care of the kid very well," Hallie said, "if you can't even keep him quiet at a simple meeting."
"He's a year old," Trick pointed out.
"And? That's no excuse. If a kid can't be kept quiet, they shouldn't be at an important meeting."
"Y' self-important bitch. Just 'cos ya hate kids..."
"I wouldn't be name-calling, Patricia. Just because you're sick in the head and wanna be a man doesn't mean we have to tolerate..."
That got Trick up, and there probably was going to be a fight, but Daisy interposed herself.
"Trick, she's not worth it. Come on. Let's go and pack."
"Pack?" Paul said as the went out of the kitchen.
He instinctively went after them, and that seemed to break up Hallie's meeting. Rip and Dave slipped out the front door, and Wally brushed past on his way to the back room to get a clean shirt for work.
Paul stopped on the bottom step of the stairs.
"Whaddya mean pack?" he called up after Trick and Daisy.
"They've been talkin' leaving for a while," Nick explained. "Trick... Well, Trick's uncomfortable here. Strain offered 'em a room down the street."
"But they... We..."
"Hey, man. Their decision."
"Yeah, but... But Danny."
Nick shrugged, still walking and soothing the fussy baby.
"Maybe they'll take him with. Save us all a lot of headache, anyhow."
They would take Danny? Well, maybe Nick was right. Maybe that was best. Still... Well, it would only be down the street. Paul could still see them, and the baby. He had got used to taking the baby around on his daily routine. Probably, since they both worked a lot, they would still let him. And if Mandy turned back up, well, Danny would be back too.
Nick had wandered along in to sit on the sofa, singing Danny a song about a train. Paul started to go upstairs, to see if Daisy and Trick were all right. He heard Hallie in the kitchen, starting to make breakfast, and as he reached the fifth step, he felt Tuğrul's hand on his back.
"She says if Mandy is not back by Sunday morning, she will report the baby as abandoned on Monday, no matter where he's staying or with who," he rasped in Paul's ear. "Thought you should know."
"She... Thanks, man."
Tuğrul smiled, nodded, and went off to find Wally. Paul, meanwhile, headed up to talk to Daisy and Trick. It felt like time to make a plan.

2023.06.05 10:57 HazzRatt I turned up to something I want invited to. Should I leave my friend group?

Currently I am in my second last year of high school. But since the beginning I have been with this one friend group. Originally we were known as the “academic” group as that was what we bonded over. However as time progressed many of my friends in this group have moved on to different things whereas I mostly stayed the same. Now many of them have girlfriends and other interests whilst I am just the same “academically” focused person I was from the start. But since the start of this year they’ve mostly stopped inviting me to things, with a few exceptions.
A week ago, one of my closest friends, who I shall call Bob, told me that the other members had started a group chat without me. They planned on going to a local city event. I then asked my group around to see if I could invite myself. I asked quite a few friends ‘Did you hear this event is on in my city, I would love to go with you if you’re available’. Of course I didn’t mention the secret group chat, but in the end my efforts were futile as they all said they were busy. That’s when Bob told me when and where they decided to meet and then asked if I’d like to secretly come along. I said yes.
And so when it got to the day I kept in contact with Bob and turned up at the correct time and place. I met up with the friend group. But when they saw me there they just looked to upset to see me, apart from Bob. In the end, I stuck with them for the event, although they ignored me most of the time and refused to look at me, and I spent most of my time with Bob. I came to school the next day and they have not spoken to me since. Before, they’d at least have a chat with me. But now they just won’t even look at me.
Should I have gone to the event? Is there any way I can repair the damage? And most importantly, should I start looking for new friends asap?

This post is going to be very diferent from the last I did in 2020. As you can guess with the title, I'm gonna talk about happiness.
I've been through very painful experiences. Awful partners, awful friends, betrayals.
But this is finally over.
Why ? Simple. I've worked on myself, my personality. I've pushed away every toxic people. I've stopped talking to me high school friends who preferred being around with my ex (hiding it on their stories btw). I've stopped talking to people who just wanted to hurt me. I've stopped chasing after men, sick of crazy people.
All I did was pushing away bad people, and let good people come in my life, even if it meant being alone for a while. Believe me, it's worth it. Wasn't easy, when you are accustomed to sadness, violence, you just kind of cling to it 'cause this is just the only thing that you know.
I let it all go. I just decided 'Okay, I'll have no boyfriend, no friends anymore, but I'll be free from toxic people.'
And guess what ? Naturally, I met a boy. A really nice boy, and it's been a year and a half since we are together. I am really happy with this person, I feel loved, and I love him so much too.
Concerning friends, I just accepted the fact that 1 some people are not your friends and that's okay 2 real good friends exist, you just have to wait and you'll find them 3 don't expect your friends to be perfect. They owe you nothing. Neither do you.
And guess what ? I met two wonderful person. Two girls that I deeply love.

Here I am, after 5 years of sadness, hard experience with people, Here I am, happy. Just happy.
The world did not change. People did not change. But I did.
I realised that after all, you are the sailor of your ship.
Choose the right destination. There will be waves, sometimes tsunami, but keep on. Keep your destination. Don't wait other boat to come to save you. Don't expect sea to stop its movement. Just keep your boat moving right into the direction you want. Never stop, never give up. If you WANT happiness, it'll happen. Try to avoid rocks, storm, as possible. Sometimes you'll avoid them, sometimes you won't. Stay away from bad things/people. Sometimes people are a friend of the sea, some are just pirates that want to loot you and sink your ship. Look at them, be careful, and wait. You'll see.
There are things you can't help. Sometimes bad things happen. Good people turn out to be bad people. But there is one thing that you control : how you react.
Seek happiness, seek good things and good people. Stay focus on your destination. Let storm be, resist. Avoid pirates, avoid rocks, and even if you hit it, repair your ship, repair yourself, and keep on.
One day, you'll be navigating in the Sea of Happiness. Right at your side you'll see the person that'll be ready to navigate with you.
Don't give up. Be good, seek good, and you'll find happiness.

I F(19) have a boyfriend since nearly 9 months now. My mother F (43) hates lie the most. She is someone who argues and won’t let you really talk back, I do it anyways to stand up for myself and what’s right. She was raised in a different country (Kosovo) with different rules, while war. My parents want me to marry someone from my homecountry. I told them multiple time Staat since we live in Germany I can make any promises. Now I am in a relationship with someone who’s roots are from turkey. They will accept it one day, I know that. But today she screamed at me again that if I have a boyfriend she doesn’t know about she’ll kill herself and it will be my faul. She exaggerates most of the time. I know she wouldn’t actually do it. I’m nearly finished with 13th grade and will study in January next year. I will live in a city that is 1h away from home. And I just don’t know what to do. I had to lie to her to prove that I’m serious about him. I never had a relationship before because I wanktest for the right one. I’m not someone who needs the experience with multiple partners in life. I just want one partner and to build up a life with him. But what should I do now? Should I tell her in the next few months like I planned or should I wait until I move out so I don’t have to take in the pain she will give me while still living here ? I wanted to be honest to her since the second week we were dating but my older sister said I should wait. I don’t if it’ll be worse if I keep lying to her or telling her and having to go through the pain she’ll give me while I’m still living at home. Any advice? Maybe people who experienced the same or have similar parents. Or just any advice.

Took my dog to the vet for an ear infection and he’s been taking HydrOXYzine for a few days. My roommates had a guest stay over for 2 nights and he was chill with the guest when typically if he doesn’t know someone who comes over it’s a big deal and he won’t stop barking at them/being aggressive towards them and he doesn’t relax. Hi to all who can offer some constructive advice / feedback,
Christian in NZ here. I’d like to get your opinion on leadings of the Spirit. Lately I haven’t been close to God, because I’ve been selfish and scared of handing over complete control of (all aspects of) my life. Selfishly I want to live life my way, but I know God wants me to do things differently. Withholding has been making me miserable, as I feel God is asking me to put Him in number one spot and act how the I feel the Spirit is leading me. I know, or think I know, what the Spirit’s leadings sound like, and I know to check them against scripture.
Today I knew I couldn’t waste any more time disobeying God, and told Him I’m scared but I need to do what he’s asking. Then I saw a Dude Perfect video, the worlds highest basketball shot, and saw how miraculously God made that happen. (See the long version of the vid). I bawled and felt renewed and a weight has lifted. Have spent some of the day reading the Word and talking to Him.
Now, fast forward to tonight, I am texting an “unsaved” family member. I get a rush to drop the video into the conversation, but I have been asked by this person to “not talk about that stuff” with them (they personally asked me this).
I hesitated to bring it up, and I didn’t. I felt like God was encouraging me to share (sharing has been a problem in the past for me - I’m not a very “out” Christian, as grew up in non Christian family and I was suppressed when I “became” a Christian in my mid/late teens.)
So conundrum - I don’t want to damage my relationship with the family member, but I also felt I should drop the video into the conversation (just really expressing how amazing it was). There’s one little reference to God.
So my question is - has anyone else been in this situation where they feel like they should share but know they run the risk of destroying the relationship, or Satan really using something you do, in good faith and in good spirit, to wreck an important relationship?
I am previously a staunch anti Christian, and was all about Christians “keeping it to themselves”, and became annoyed at those who didn’t. So I can see from both sides now. But if I’m to start keeping a tender heart to the Spirit and letting Him guide me, I can’t second guess unctions in the moment?
There may have been a good reason for sharing at this point - the person is sick and may be at a point where sharing would be comforting - but I don’t want to fall into a snare. “Wise as serpents… innocent as doves”
Previously I have followed some of these nudgings and found myself in very “coincidental” situations

Hi all, I would just like to share this first solo travel experience where I got pickpocketed in Switzerland.
I was in England / Scotland for 10 days and all was fine, I was very careful with my belongings. But just on 3rd June, my 2nd day in Switzerland, I was taking a golden pass scenic train from Montreux to Interlaken on first class.
When I was boarding, there was an Indian male in front of me and an Indian female behind me. The Indian male went up the train and then came back down and bumped into me and I had my wallet in my pocket. At that moment I was distracted and when I went up the train and loaded my luggage, I realised my wallet was missing. I panicked as I never been pickpocketed before and my cards my ID and cash are in there. I went around searching the cabin (especially the front where I boarded, at least 5 times and I couldn’t find anything. I asked around all passengers in the cabin and nothing as well.
Then just when I was about to get the police at the station, I walked out and the Indian woman behind me (in the photos) then came running out of the cabin waving my wallet at me.
I was thankful at first but when I checked my wallet, all my cash were gone. About 800 CHF And 250+ £ in total. I then got suspicious and asked the lady that returned my wallet where did she find it? She said front of the cabin, where I searched more than 5 times and didn’t see my wallet there.
That was when I realised, she must have been the one that pickpocketed me and I then told the train inspector about what happened as the train just departed and he tried to call for police along the stops to come onboard and search this woman as we didn’t had the rights. However, since it’s a scenic train on a Saturday, the police were not available on any stops along the route. I then tried to take photos of her and confronted her and she was really nervous and just said she just found my wallet and knows nothing. There was nothing else I could do and I had to wait till I reach INTERLAKEN before I made a police report.
The police then told me it’s summer season and it’s very likely this woman in the photos worked with the man who bumped into me to cause a distraction and to pickpocket me. The police said there’s a lot of such criminals around the stations who are under syndicates / gangs where they pretend to be tourists, dresses and acts like a tourist.
This is a very expensive lesson and it’s also a lesson for my first solo travel, not to put so much cash in the wallet and always be vigilant especially when solo traveling. Help yourself before helping others as you will never know if the intentions of others are genuine.
Even though I lost this 800 francs and 250+ pounds, I am still thankful I guess I got the opportunity to travel and thankful that I had emergency cash not in the same wallet. It is very unlikely for me to get back that money as the police told me. But if the pickpockets wants their photos removed, dm me ;) your faces will be everywhere possible.
If any of you spots this lady around in Switzerland, do show her this post and tell her to dm me :) Tell her to enjoy her lowly life as a thief and take that money as a donation to a poor soul like her. Such lowlife pickpockets will have karma hit them hard I’m sure. They will never be able to have their heads high in life. Forever lowly peasants.
I’ve more photos and videos which I shared with the police but I won’t be posting here. I’ll continue to spread this message around many platforms especially those switz related. The police will review the cctv at the station and send me images of the man if they manage to find anything, which I will upload here as well.
Just be aware if you spot this woman in Switzerland as she is likely taking trains around working with others to pickpocket tourists / solo travellers like myself.
To everyone else solo travelling or tourists touring Europe this summer, do stay vigilant and keep your valuable safe! Stay safe everyone x

Behind the scenes though, you and a select few were notified that your mentor had lost their reason to continue fighting. You, being closer than others, knew why; You refused to tell anyone about it, after all, maybe, just maybe you could convince your mentor to return to the thing that you knew made them happy.

The Hero H: The former apprentice of the retired hero and is in their own right a renowned superhero and the legacy of their mentor.

> Scene: Apartment, home of retired mentor
[There’s a series of knocks on the door, some seconds later, the door opens]
H: (Cheery) Hey there! Shocked that it’s me again? (Pause for 3 beats) No? Well, I can’t blame ya. I’ve been in ya hair so often as of late, it would be odd for me to not show up today too; Well is there any chance that uhm I can come in? (Slightly desperate) Please?
[Multiple steps out of sync are heard, before the door creaks closed, then with a click, it is locked shut.]
H: (Relieved) Thanks for having me…okay, I may have lied; I mean, not really, maybe just a bit. However I really did come here for a social call, the extent of the whole truth is that I need a place to relax, my place is kinda packed with fans trying to see if they can get my autograph, or picture, or whatever. You know how it is with fans. I mean, I remember when I would visit your old place and you couldn’t even walk on the sidewalk, all those people trying to get a glimpse of you, it still boggles my mind. But, I know how you feel when I start talking about those days, so I won’t. (Pause for 3 beats, pensively) While we’re on the topic of the old days, there is something else I want to bring up with you…
[The hero’s sentence was cut short as a teacup and its accompanying saucer is gently placed on the wooden table]
H: Oh! Is the tea already ready? (Pause for 2 beats) What am I saying, if you were waiting for me, of course the tea is going to be ready to serve. So, thank you, for the tea, and everything else; (Pause for 2 beats, pensively) Also, if my visits get to be too much, please do let me know. Last thing I want to do is take too many of your spoons away. (Pause for 3 beats) I know, I know that you were my mentor; That doesn’t take away from the fact that you’re still human and sometimes that means that you need your own space to recover and have some, you time; I get it, I have those days too. (Pause for 3 beats) Anyways, before I continue to ramble on, I just appreciate everything you’ve done for me; As both a mentor and a friend, I can never repay you. (Pause for 3 beats) Right, sorry, didn’t mean to begin to ramble on.
[The teacup is lifted from the saucer as a sip is taken]
H: About that other thing that I wanted to talk to you about. And before you give me that face, it’s not me trying to convince you to put on your suit again; I know the boundaries you’ve set and I have no intentions of betraying your trust; Besides, I’ve already voiced my opinions on your retirement; (Pause for 3 beats) Let me stop beating around the bush, I’ve actually come to get some knowledge out of you.
[Once again the hero takes another sip of their tea]
H: Okay, if you’ve seen the news recently, I’m sure that you’re noticing that a lot of, as we call them at headquarters, Golden Age Villains are suddenly finding themselves out of retirement and back on the scene. And it just so happens that they’re doing so when half of our own Golden Age Heroes are retired, or in the process of retiring; And with them, their in-depth knowledge of those Golden Age Villains going with them as they do so. But you don’t need me to tell you this to you, I mean you’re a First International after all, the baddest of all badass hero ages. (Pause for 2 beats) Well yeah, we’ve been reviewing old combat footage and after action reports between you all and them, but, something’s changed in them, they don’t fight like they used to. (Pause for 3 beats) No, I don’t mean that they’re older and their attacks are slower, I mean that their styles have changed entirely, even how they use their abilities has as well.
[The hero takes another sip of their tea, before putting down the saucer and cup]
H: I’m talking about, uhm, (finger snap) remember Devastator!? (Pause for 2 beats) Yeah, the one with earthquake causing powers; Used them more like a sledgehammer, battles would usually end with tons in collateral damage every single time. (Pause for 2 beats) Yeah him, well, recently we had to investigate a series of jewelry store break-ins. The odd thing about them was that they all happened during an earthquake. And after an investigation, as it turns out, Devastator used the earthquake as cover to break storefront windows. But because the break ins happened during an earthquake, the police chalked it up to earthquake damage. Which made the response time a lot longer than what it should’ve been. This of course allowed our old friend to empty out the stores with plenty of time to even steal from the registers, and well it goes without saying that if the store had a safe, those were emptied out as well. Very uncharacteristic of Devastator. (Pause for 3 beats then with a bit of a laugh) Yes, he did get an outfit change. I’m not going to lie, I do like their new outfit, it’s sleek and modern, not like that dreadful Golden Age outfit; (Nervously) I mean, yeah, there’s something to be said about classic outfits, sure, but this new outfit of theirs. Ugh it’s just so much more tasteful and easy on the eyes, Devastator absolutely called a designer to make their comeback outfit, cause yes. Ramblings aside, think you can help out?
[A series of sounds from distant cars honking can be heard before they’re eventually drowned out by an airplane passing overhead]
H: The way you can help is rather easy actually. I was hoping you could tell me the names of your rogues gallery, and anything personal about them that you can recall; I’m talking about hobbies, if they had a family, who they hung out with, anything and everything. If it wouldn’t be that much of an issue, could we go over your rogues gallery before I became your sidekick first; After that, maybe we could cross reference the villains that you and I faced, that way we could also make a rough timeline of when each villain showed up to the scene, and when was the last time that they appeared in public. (Pause for 2 beats) Why? Well, there’s a debate, some say that it’s simply old dogs learning new tricks. However, there are others, like myself, who believe that perhaps they haven’t learned new tricks, but rather that they have someone else pulling their strings. Maybe mind control, or cloning, it’s difficult to give any definitive answer yet; (Pause for 2 beats) Come on now, how could you think that we wouldn’t start at the beginning, we’re combing through the Golden Age Heroes in order to see if there are any villains with the ability to mind control others, barring that, maybe there was a villain with hyper intelligence and the resources to be able to create clones on a whim. And, just like you and the old timers taught us, the best place to look for said villains would be within the groups that our lovely Golden Age Villains associated themselves with.
[The teacup makes a noise as it slightly clanks against the saucer, as it is picked up, and the last bit of the tea is sipped up]
H: (Pensively) Profiling? Mmm, I don’t think you could consider it profiling, suspicion by association absolutely. However we have to begin somewhere, and well you all pretty much hammered it into our skulls. (Pause for 3 beats, happily and excited) You’ll help?! That’s wonderful! Thanks so much! I really appreciate it! And I know the other heroes at headquarters will also appreciate it. Mind if I step outside real quick? I need to make a quick phone call.
[There’s the sound of a chair scraping against the ground, along with the steps that lead to a door; Said door opens and closes. As soon as the door closes, a phone is taken out and a phone number seems to be dialed]
H: Yeah hey! It’s me! Good news! They’ve agreed to help! Yeah! I’m going to go get as much of their rogues gallery written down as possible. Maybe if we’re lucky, it’ll also be the catalyst for getting them back into the action. I mean they’re still in good shape, and I can definitely see the spark still being there in their eyes. We just need to jump start it. And this just might be the spark to get them going. Though, we may have to help them get over the incident. (Pause for 2 beats) yes ma’am, I know ma’am, I’m aware it’s a delicate subject; I was there ma’am, so I know how hurtful it would be if I brought it up before they’re ready.
[The sound of a few people passing by can be heard, they stop for a quick second, whispering among themselves]
H: (Away from the phone) Hi, yeah, uhm sorry I’m not doing autographs or pictures right now. I’m kinda visiting an old friend of mine, and I’m also on the phone with Sunspot. (Pause for 3 beats slightly bored expression) Yes, The Sunspot. (Pause for 3 beats) Thank you for being so understanding. (Pause for 2 beats) Okay, yeah, maybe next time. (Back towards phone) Eh, don’t worry about it, just some fans, or maybe just people who have seen me in that one famous magazine I did recently. (Pause for 4 beats) Yeah that one! Well I guess the sister publication…no, not the teen version, the hero version. Yeah Hero Mania Magazine; Regardless, they were very understanding of what I was currently doing. Oh! The people I just spoke to also say hi. (Pause for 3 beats) Yeah, don’t worry, my mentor knows that I stepped out to do this call. Though I’m not going to be able to stay on the line for much longer, I’m seeing more and more eyes on me from the people passing the hallways. Yes ma’am, don’t worry, my mission priority is to get the information out of them first, then I’ll be heading to headquarters before doing anything else. Alright, I’ve got to go, bye.
[The hero hangs up their phone, then proceeds to open the door and walk back over to the chair; After closing the door.]
H: Alright, thank you so much for letting me make the call, I really appreciate it; (Pause for 3 beats) Oh, it was Sunspot, just giving her a status update on my mission, and how it’s coming along. (Pause for 4 beats) Sunspot is doing well—at least as well as someone can be after having their new position imposed onto them—(Pause for 3 beats) Yeah don’t worry, she doesn’t fault you for that, she knows the circumstances of your retirement. Sides according to her (mocking in a friendly manner) Ain’t no bemoaning what’s already happened; Only thing yah can do now is ride the horse or get off the saddle. (With a little laughter) Besides, don’t tell her I said this, but I think she likes the attention. I mean it would make sense, what with her being from a family of rodeo stars and whatnot. But uhm where were we? (Pause for 2 beats) Oh right! Your rogues gallery, give me a second to take out a pen and a notebook…and, now I’m ready to write down the info, so let me hear them all. (Pause for 3 beats, thoughtfully) Okay so there’s Plague, Gamma Vortex, and Wraith to begin with, and who would you say was the first one to show up?
[The teacup clanks against the saucer as it is once again lifted and drunk, the scene slowly fades to nothing as the last bit of the final line is spoken and softly disappears, ultimately ending the scene]
> Scene: Headquarters
[The sound of a pair of mechanical doors opening is heard, followed by the sound of some steps making their way in]
H: And according to the information that we’ve gathered, we can surmise that…(Pause for 3 beats) huh? (Pleasantly surprised) Hey! Look who’s out of the apartment!? (Pause for 3 beats then with a slight laugh) I kid, you know it’s fantastic to see you here, especially after all of these years. (Pause for 3 beats) Oh, you noticed the remodel and, well, everything. Yeah, we brought it into the modern age! Or at least according to the New Internationals we have. You know how young heroes are; You let them breakout of their sidekick roles and suddenly they think that they’re all that. Calling into question your design choices, your outfits; (Pause for 3 beats, in denial) What? Nope, what are you talking about, we were never like them. (Pause for 3 beats, still in denial) That’s an utter lie, I did not question your own outfit when I broke out. (Pause for 2 beats) Yeah, well, you don’t have any sort of evidence to back up this claim of yours, soooo, take that.
[The Hero addresses the console, after hearing that there was snickering being heard through the screen]
H: (Shocked and embarrassed) Oh gosh, I can’t believe I just did that in front of everyone. I won’t be able to live this down. Now I have to retire, change my name, and never be a superhero again. (Pause for 3 beats, then continue with some laughter) I’m kidding, let me mute myself though, I don’t want to have a hot mic incident again, and also it lets all of you on call right now to discuss among yourselves the information we’ve gathered up.
[The Hero turns back to their mentor, after the snickering from the computers turns into murmurs of discussion]
H: (Nervous laughter) New hero candidates, am I right? You know the headache that they give you when you’re trying to get them used to working within an organization like ours. But I don’t have to remind you of that fact. (Pause for 3 beats) Okay, and? So what if my generation is three-fourths former sidekicks, the point still stands, the other fourth was still difficult to integrate once they passed the grace period, weren’t they? (Pause for 2 beats) Exactly, thank you for agreeing with me.
[The Hero walks a bit around the room, their steps being heard before the sound of a sliding door overtakes the noise]
H: Walk with me, yeah? (Pause for 3 beats) Sorry if you were looking forward to meeting some old friends, and former sidekicks. Unfortunately, most are in different outposts, it’s recruitment season and the marketing department wants our most recognizable heroes out there at the outposts to increase the numbers of potential candidates that we can reach; So you can imagine how stretched thin we are right now, but hey, if we couldn’t multitask, then what kind of heroes would we be?
[Another door opens up as the steps continue going towards their direction]
H: (With a slight surprise) Still, this is your first time stepping into the HQ in a while, right? (Pause for 3 beats) Oh yeah, internal security thought it was a good idea to beef up our systems, to prevent you know, shapeshifters from waltzing in, or telepaths who are mind controlling heroes from infiltrating and causing some chaos; So sorry if the security people were being a bit difficult, I see they gave you a visitor’s pass though; (Whistle) Level Five clearance, there’s only one other person in this building authorized to give that out, which means that you were able to catch Honor Guard just before they had to leave for their own outpost assignment, right? (Pause for 3 beats) Figures, I went out to get drinks with them one night, and they would not stop telling old battle stories that they had with you. Though to be fair we didn’t know each other that well at the time, so it was an easy commonality between the two of us. We went back and forth in sharing stories, so it wasn’t completely one sided. They're a really great person, and honestly, I’m glad that we got to talking with each other. (Pause for 3 beats, pensively) While we’re on the topic of internal security, let me know if you want to put your information into the system, just to avoid any discomfort with the security in case Honor Guard isn’t able to help you.
[The sound of two sets of steps walking are heard, though they come to a stop as soon as they hear the sound and sight of construction going on. Mostly hammers, saws, welding torches, and drills.]
H: So catching up aside, what’s going on? What brings you here? (Pause for 2 beats, surprised) Oh? You want to help a bit more? Uhm yeah we won’t turn away help, especially from a seasoned veteran like you. Minus any field work, we could always use more people to help comb through the archives; If you wouldn’t mind working there that is. (Pause for 3 beats) Wonderful! Great, uhm we’re actually not too far from it. (Pause for 3 beats) Yeah you’re entirely right, this was The Memorial Atrium, though we’re renaming it to…well we’re not sure yet, we have a pool going on across the entirety of the organization. So far it looks like The Resting Garden is winning. (Pause for 3 beats) No, we didn’t get rid of The Memorial Atrium, we just moved it. Actually that’s me lying, now it’s called Memorial Hall, it will have an atrium by the same name, and a plate that gives information to visitors. (Pause for 3 beats) Yeah, with all the heroes that announced their retirements, we figured that the atrium was going to quickly fill up; So we allocated some funds to build a new building, nothing fancy, but enough to host memorials to our heroes for a long while before needing an expansion.
[The sound of two sets of feet moving again are heard, as the sound of the construction slowly dims into silence]
H: I can’t even begin to tell you how much your help will do for us; (Pause for 3 beats) Oh no don’t worry, you’re not going to be the only person in the archives, we have some of the more eagle eyed and brainy sidekicks in there. We put them on intern duty and have them looking over the films and records. I’m sure they’ll benefit from having someone in there to guide them on what entries to pay attention to and which not to. (A bit excited) Although, I would feel pretty bad if I didn’t try to warn you about the fact that there might be some fans of yours in that group. (Whispering) If I had to give my own opinion, it wouldn’t surprise me if the others gained an interest in you from all the archive entries they’ve been going through.
[The walking stops, as the two stand in front of the room, there’s the muffled sound of old battle reels playing, and some clattering of heavy boxes coming from the other side of the door.]
H: Welp this is your room, again, sorry if you get swarmed in there; You know how sidekicks are…well, you know how I was when I was your sidekick. (Pause for 3 beats, then laugh a bit) Hey! What did you expect!? First of all, I was a huge fan of yours, and when you selected me as your sidekick I was over the moon. Second of all, I was just a kid back then (pause for 3 beats) Okay so maybe sixteen isn’t technically being a kid but you know what I mean.
[The Hero pounds in a code on the pad, the beep of the lock opening signifies that it was the right code; Which leads to the doors sliding open.]
H: (Leaning into the room, and slightly away from the mic) Hey everyone! Uhm I’ve got a special guest for all of you. They’ll help you the best they can, and I really respect them, so take very good care of them; Most importantly of all, listen to them because you’ll come to find out that this particular guest of mine has an incredible amount of experience. So, say hi to my mentor!
[The sound of people getting excited and even murmuring spilled out into the hallway, while the battle reels still very much were playing.]
H: (Normally) Well, I hate to introduce and run, however I do have a meeting to finish up, and then after that, I gotta go and check out some tips we got, I think a few of them could be the big break we’ve been looking for. (Pause for 3 beats) Yeah, don’t worry, I’ll be safe… I mean, you did teach me to keep myself safe first and foremost. Anyways, thanks again for coming down and helping out. If memory serves, some of the other heroes are due to return today, so I think a lot of them would love to see you walking the halls again, even if it’s just for your visit; It’ll be a huge morale boost, especially with some of the old timers you used to pal around with. (Pause for 3 beats, then once more with laughter) So what if I know most of those old timers (playfully cocky) Just because y’all were the first heroes to establish this group, doesn’t mean y’all are on top anymore. We could totally run circles around all of you; Some of us literally (Pause for 3 beats, playfully laugh) oh, experience beats raw power any day does it? That’s what you forget my dear friend, we’re not inexperienced sidekicks anymore, we’re full blown heroes in our own right. (Laugh again) Anyways, banter aside, it really will boost the mood around here to see one of the founding members walking around. I’ll catch you later okay? Can’t keep the others waiting.
[The sound of the Hero walking away, their steps getting quieter and quieter as they do is one of the last things heard before the door to the archives closes]
